Bottom Line

El Cid Marina Beach Hotel is a relaxed beachfront all-inclusive resort that's one of the better options in Mazatlan. The beach, two beautiful restaurants with alfresco dining, and sparkling pools with waterfalls and hot tubs draw plenty of families and couples. There are 200 spacious rooms done in a fresh, modern style, and all  include kitchenettes, private balconies (with optional water views), and satellite TVs. However, the lack of free Wi-Fi, curious beach setup (access requires a water taxi), and limited dining options may leave some guests wanting more. As an alternative, The Inn at Mazatlan offers similar amenities, plus large, apartment-style rooms, convenient beach access, and a lovely spa for less money.

Oyster Hotel Review

Modern beachfront resort draws a relaxed mix of couples and families.

In an area that's flush with outdated resorts and budget hotels, there's a lot to like about this El Cid outpost, even when compared to its adjacent sister properties. The hotel’s overall design -- heavy use of marble throughout, immaculate landscaping, and a sparkling marina full of sizable foreign-registered yachts -- lends a waterfront country club vibe. And yet, it's a casual place with a relaxed vibe, despite the constant hum of activity from a blend of couples and families. A series of waterfront walkways connect most of the common areas, and there are lovely views of the marina from plenty of vantages. While the Las Iguanas pool offers a bit of family-friendly activity space, the hotel’s other common areas -- including two alfresco restaurants, a semi-private beach, and an adult-centric pool -- are relatively tranquil. Additionally, there's no loud entertainment on-site, helping to contribute to the peaceful atmosphere. No matter the season, guests tend to be an even mix of North American and European travelers seeking a laid-back beachfront getaway, though keep in mind getting to the beach requires using the hotel's free water taxi.

North of Mazatlan’s touristy Golden Zone -- nothing within an easy walk

With a location at the northernmost edge of Mazatlan, the property feels well secluded. This ensures a quiet atmosphere away from the urban hustle, but it also means that off-property trips require hailing a pulmonia or taxi. The center of the Golden Zone is a 10-minute drive from the resort, while the beautiful plazas and cathedrals of historic Old Mazatlan are within 25 minutes by car. Mazatlan’s International Airport (MZT) is 40 minutes away by car. While renting a car is a convenient and relatively affordable option (compared to Mexico’s many other tourist destinations), Sinaloa’s ongoing crime issues make this a bad option for tourists. Taxis and private shuttles are ubiquitous throughout the city with inexpensive rates.

Bright, spacious rooms with kitchenettes, flat-screen TVs, and private balconies -- some have marina views

Room decor is bright and modern, with crisp white walls, floors, and built-in seating. The mix of marble surfaces, light tiled floors, white furniture, and pops of slate blue all come together to create a restrained, but sharp, look that's perfectly beach appropriate. Some rooms have a touch of Expresisonistic art on the walls, though decor is otherwise kept to a minimum. 

The two room categories start with entry-level Junior Suites that have spacious one-room floor plans (593 square feet/55 square meters). This layout includes a well-equipped kitchenette (with a mini-fridge, sink, microwave, and electric cooktop). Upgraded One-Bedroom Suites provide 731-square-foot (68-square-meter) layouts that include a separate bedroom, kitchen, plus two full bathrooms and one or two balconies -- each with a marina view. For families seeking even more living space, most suites can be combined with adjoining rooms. Air-conditioning and flat-screen satellite TVs are standard. Unfortunately, Wi-Fi is only available via a paid daily or weekly plan. 

Bathrooms are simple, with a few nominally high-end touches like dual sinks and marble vanities. Stall showers and generic bath amenities are standard in every category.

The hotel’s beach is clean and offers plenty of shaded seating via long rows of lounge chairs under private, individual palapas. Although the beach is public, its location makes it feel semi-private, given that a free water taxi is required to reach it. As such, guests aren’t likely to encounter the ever-present hawkers found at most other Mazatlan resorts.

The two pools -- Las Iguanas Pool and Calypso Pool -- are sparkling and well-maintained, with plenty of seating. The former has a large, man-made rock feature that includes a waterfall, slide, hot tubs, and a more family-friendly vibe. Although it offers a small kids' play area, the latter tends to be the quieter and more relaxed of the two. Snack bars adjacent  to both, providing light finger foods and a full liquor menu with poolside drink service.

La Marina is the hotel’s primary buffet restaurant, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The space feels sophisticated, though not stuffy, with a bright, modern, Mediterranean-inspired design. The extensive selection includes Western fare, however, the focus is on traditional Mexican dishes, particularly locally caught seafood and lobster. Just outside, La Terraza restaurant (reservations required) is situated on a small patio with room for a dozen tables with lovely marina views. A full room service menu is also available, and all-inclusive rates are available. However, there are exclusions, with certain dishes requiring upcharges.

Although massage treatments are available at several private beach palapas, the property lacks a dedicated spa or fitness center. Guests are provided transportation to the wellness center at the nearby El Cid Golf & Country Club. However, free access to the gym is only provided to guests on an all-inclusive plan. Many of the amenities -- including the beach, pools, and restaurants -- at the three nearby El Cid sister properties are also available to guests of El Cid Marina Beach Hotel.

Free off-street parking can be found in a staffed lot. Wi-Fi is only available in the hotel’s common areas with the above-mentioned daily/weekly paid plans.

El Cid certainly knows a thing or two about real estate: This resort overlooks Mazatlán's picturesque marina from its seat in the city's Golden Zone ( Zona Dorada ). Meanwhile, guests staying in one of El Cid's standard, junior and one-bedroom suites sit within walking distance of the Pacific Ocean's shoreline. Standard suites feature traditional Mexican terra-cotta tile floors and Mediterranean-inspired decor, as well as satellite TVs and wireless Internet access, while larger accommodations also boast a balcony or patio. And though all rooms are appointed with kitchenettes, recent visitors highly recommend the all-inclusive dining plan that covers all meals at the on-site La Marina restaurant and a myriad of dining venues at the three other neighboring El Cid properties. When you're not eating or sleeping, lounge at one of El Cid's two pools (or El Cid's private sands) or partake in the hotel's abundant activities: You can play a round of golf, practice your tennis swing or relax with a massage at the El Cid Golf & Country Club. Today, Philippine marinas look to accommodate more and more yachts and other pleasure watercrafts as the years go by. In 2017, an ASEAN Briefing op-ed piece named the Philippines as a country with high potential in yacht industry growth. The natural beauty of the Philippine islands and its fantastic bays, combined with a growing interest in leisurely sea travel, can explain the spike in yachting activities throughout the country.

Here is a short list of clubs and marinas in the country, organized by island region.  

Manila Yacht Club and Marina, Manila, Metro Manila

Established in 1927, the Manila Yacht Club and Marina is one of the oldest yacht clubs in all of Asia, and is nestled in the scenic Manila Bay. It is also near other well-known landmarks in the city, such as the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the headquarters of the Philippine Navy, and the US Embassy. Facilities in the marina include a launching ramp and a fueling center, and the club itself is host to a restaurant and gorgeous function rooms. The Manila Yacht Club only welcomes visitors who arrive by boat, and it charges an initial security deposit of USD 750 upon arrival. Club membership is mandatory for medium and long-term mooring of boats.

Subic Bay Yacht Club, Zambales

The Subic Bay Yacht Club, which was founded in 1998, upholds itself as the country’s premier yacht club. It operates in the deepest bay in the country, and can host vessels well beyond 50 meters in length. Already benefitting from the innate beauty of the Zambales mountains surrounding it, the club hosts a number of other attractions, including its luxury accommodations, swimming pools, and its own movie theater, bowling alley, and nightclub. Those who venture outside of the club’s premises can also shop for well-priced imported goods at the Subic Freeport Zone, engage in water sports , or sign up for diving excursions.

Punta Fuego Yacht Club, Batangas

Peaceful Punta Fuego is a mecca for those who love the sport of sailing. As per its official website, the Punta Fuego Yacht Club aims to serve “a dynamic and vibrant community of boat enthusiasts and yacht owners.” This it does by playing host to a diverse population of watercrafts, from large catamarans and mono-hull yachts to small boats. Non-members of the club may use the berths for up to 3 weeks, and can refuel at the marina’s fueling station. The yacht club offers other amenities such as locker rooms, shower rooms, Internet facilities, a chart room, and a restaurant called Barracuda Bar, which serves delicious fares. Outside of the yachting crowd, Punta Fuego Yacht Club also caters to those wishing to celebrate weddings, conferences, and corporate events in their opulent quarters.

Puerto Galera Yacht Club, Oriental Mindoro

Further south, yachtsmen may moor at the Puerto Galera Yacht Club in Oriental Mindoro, an island location that’s home to tourist attractions like the Sabang Wreck dive site, lively beachfront resorts, and the Malasimbo Music Festival. Puerto Galera Yacht Club has been in operation for almost thirty years and lends services such as refueling provisions and yacht repairs from its marina. Boat owners also enjoy optimal convenience if mooring here, as they can also shop for spare parts in the nearby Batangas port.

Busuanga Yacht Club, Puerta del Sol Bay Marina, Palawan

Beautiful Palawan is a bucket-list destination for many, especially those who dream of cruising its crystalline waters. Accommodating the yachting community in this island province is the Busuanga Yacht Club, which promises secure mooring amidst breathtaking white-sand beaches. Here, each vessel will benefit from a typhoon-safe harbor, easy refueling, and direct access to transportation hubs like the New Busuanga Airport. Adjoining this marina is the Puerta del Sol Bay Resort, which offers luxurious accommodations to visitors. When not atop the deck of a boat, travelers can also explore the lagoons and freshwater lakes of Coron, go shipwreck diving, or relax in the hot springs of Maquinit.

Iloilo Sailing Club, Arevelo, Iloilo City, Iloilo

Iloilo Province is home to some of the country’s most beautiful old-world architecture, a flourishing ecotourism industry, and delectably fresh seafood cuisine. What will round off an unforgettable visit to Iloilo, however, is an excursion to the Iloilo Sailing Club on a leisure watercraft. The club accepts visitors and encourages membership in the case of medium and long-stay mooring. It also hosts a number of amenities and activities, including a dinghy storage, a beach bar and restaurant, and classes for those who want to learn about sailing. In recent months, the Iloilo Sailing Club has also been a convenient meet-up point for big maritime events, such as the Iloilo-Guimaras Paraw Regatta and the Seafarers’ Job Fair.

Cebu Yacht Club, Mactan Island, Cebu

The historic Mactan Island in Cebu was the site of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan’s arrival in the Philippines. Now known as a commercial hub that hosts a prolific furniture and musical instruments industries, Mactan is also the location of the Cebu Yacht Club, an institution that is beloved by the locals. Aside from being an ideal spot to restock on much-needed fuel and supplies, the Cebu Yacht Club is also a trusted club to commission for boat repairs. There’s a good vibe in this club for everybody, as it sports both luxury accommodations and a waterfront strip of restaurants that laid-back diners can frequent. MINDANAO

Holiday Oceanview Marina, Samal Island, Davao del Norte

The Holiday Oceanview Marina is a major attraction of Samal Island in Davao del Norte Province, one that welcomes Filipino and foreign yachtsmen alike to moor within its premises. The space is quite roomy, in fact, with 56 berths that can fit vessels up to 15 meters in length. The club also has a boat ramp that can accommodate boats up to 18 meters in length. The well-guarded and weather-safe marina is a gateway to some of Mindanao’s finest attractions, such as the Pearl Farm, Hagimit Falls, and Giant Clam Sanctuary.
