Win Win: a 108ft carbon superyacht designed as a dual-purpose cruiser-racer

Yachting World

  • February 3, 2015

An little known Mallorcan designer has created this wild card 108ft cruiser-racer called Win Win. Toby Hodges hears her story

Javier Jaudenes is a name you probably will not have heard of before. But, judging from these explosive pictures of his first superyacht design, Win Win we will be seeing more from this Mallorcan designer.

C3PO

The 108ft Baltic Win Win is an uncompromising, dual-purpose cruiser-racer, a lightweight carbon machine representing the latest in an increasing trend of 100-115ft performance superyachts designed for race-hungry owners who also want to cruise with a minimum of professional crew.

The owner of Win Win is an experienced long-distance sailor who owned the 95ft Jongert, Scorpione dei Mare . The story goes that on the morning of the opening race of the Superyacht Cup Palma four years ago, Scorpione ’s mainsail trimmer dropped out. The bowman contacted Palma resident Javier Jaudenes, who jumped in a RIB and met the yacht on the startline. They went on to win the regatta.

Jaudenes had studied naval architecture in Southampton and worked for Barracuda Yacht Design. After helping to race and optimise Scorpione , Jaudenes showed the owner some of his drawings. The result is this feisty, contemporary, lightweight cruiser-racer. “He was a wild card decision,” says WinWin ’s captain, Clive Walker, “but having sailed with Javier, we had the confidence in him.”

A sleek contemporary design

Latest trends

Jaudenes himself is happy with the yacht: “She feels great: light, powerful and balanced – a boat that wants to go fast all the time.” In trials she made 18.7 knots under gennaker, and 12 knots easily upwind.

Jaudenes was influenced by the latest trends in the racing scene for wide and powerful hull shapes. “In my experience superyachts tend to get overpowered very soon,” he says. So he drew a shape that was both very powerful when reaching and that wouldn’t need to be reefed early when cruising with limited crew.

LWL 30.68m/100ft 8in

The Loro Piana in the British Virgin Islands and the St Barths Bucket will be WinWin ’s first competitive outings. And competition in this sector is hot. But she’s also intended to cruise in luxury and, for this, insulation was a key focus – carbon yachts are notoriously loud places below.

“The noise levels were the lowest we had specified in a contract before,” says Baltic’s marketing director Kenneth Nyfelt. Natural cork-cored sandwich panels were used for both non-structural and interior panels to achieve better acoustic damping.

The interior uses washed and limed oak veneers

“It was striking just how quiet the boat was below with, at times, 25 knots true on deck and boat speeds hitting the high teens,” maintains Baltic’s CEO Henry Hawkins. “Our efforts to keep this boat light and yet quiet have clearly worked.” The weight-saving target was strict and so this 108-footer weighs just 47 tonnes without her keel.

WinWin has a similar retractable propulsion system to the one developed for the 147ft Visione . Nyfelt feels it is worth the small extra weight as the prop is fixed and optimised for both efficiency and noise under engine.

The benefits of a clean hull profile can be felt on the wheel when sailing. “She doesn’t have any drag,” says Jaudenes, “she feels like a dinghy, with a very clean flow on the rudder and a clean stern wake.”

Hawkins adds: “The performance potential is clear and yet notably the creature comforts have not been set aside in order to achieve this.” UK firm Design Unlimited has styled the light (in both senses) and minimalist interior, the forward section of which is devoted to one vast master suite.

Jaudenes is also commended for the comfort of the crew area he designed at the widest point aft. “He created a place we are all happy to be,” says Walker.

With the cruising goals achieved and the regatta performance looking promising, expect to hear more of WinWin , and particularly the name of Javier Jaudenes.

WINWIN // BALTIC YACHTS

Win-win situation - speed, style, cruising comfort, and modern technology - baltic 108, christened sailing yacht winwin..

WINWIN is a high-tech cruiser/racer constructed in prepreg carbon composite designed by Javier Jaudenes . The yacht was developed for cruising with a lot of comforts and a small crew but also for racing on regattas.

WINWIN has a draft of 5.50 meters but thanks to a lifting keel she can also visit shallow waters. Another underwater feature is a retractable propulsion system to reduce water resistance. A refinement of the system first used on the Baltic 147, Visione, the fixed propeller has been optimized, resulting in lower fuel consumption and a quieter engine, while also proving more effective during reversing maneuvers.

The yacht has been developed to meet the requirements of the DNV Hull structure verification 1A1 classification.

WinWin Yacht Baltic 108

The sleek superstructure encapsulates a long deck saloon, seamlessly connected to a single-level cockpit via the push button retractable glass bulkhead. This bulkhead drops down discreetly, ensuring an uninterrupted transition between interior and exterior. The spacious cockpit features a sunbathing platform on either side and provides an excellent area for fast, efficient maneuvers while racing, and a large enough space for enjoying al fresco dining. The aft crew entrance ensures quietness and owner’s privacy.

Interior of WINWIN

The modern and functional interior comes from the boards of Design Unlimited . and offers six cabins. The forward section is mostly taken up by an exceptionally generous master suite comprising of a large, full-width cabin with en-suite shower room, and a study and owners’ lounge stretching down the port side complete with desk, three-sided settee and ample storage. Facing that across the centerline is a Pullman cabin for the owners to use when passage making, demonstrating that this yacht is intended for serious sailing.

WinWin Yacht Interior

The deck saloon is a well-proportioned seating and entertaining area with plenty of light, not least as a result of the retracting glass bulkhead that leads out to the cockpit center aft section of the boat includes two twin guest cabins each with en-suite, plus a fully-equipped galley, crew mess with navigation station, and two Pullman cabins providing high-quality accommodation for up to four crew. In keeping with the brief for a light, minimalist finish, the interior uses washed and limed oak veneers for the floors and interior joinery. The white high-gloss painted lacquered overheads aid in reflecting light throughout. Concealed light panels help maintain the atmosphere of clean simplicity.

The magazines Superyacht News and The Superyacht Owner sat down with the owner Kim Schindelhauer and the designer for an interview .

“To build this boat, I knew I needed team players, not superstars[…]”

America’s Cup: The rising cost of sailing’s ultimate prize

by Patrick Kidd

The America’s Cup is a peculiarly ugly trophy — and it lacks a bottom, so you can’t even drink from it — yet some of the richest men in history have spent hundreds of millions of dollars in an attempt to own it.

Spending oodles on the Cup is a tradition that goes right back to its beginning. John Cox Stevens, commodore of the New York Yacht Club, led a six-man syndicate that brought a 31 metre schooner called America across the Atlantic Ocean in 1851 to make money. They began by placing adverts challenging all-comers (with no age, ability or experience restrictions) to race for a wager of £10,000 (the equivalent of about $1.5 million today), but got no takers.

America made its name later that summer when it joined 15 yachts for the Royal Yacht Squadron’s race around the Isle of Wight. The prize was a trophy costing just £100, but such was America ’s reputation after its convincing win that the syndicate sold the boat for $25,000 — about $5,000 more than they’d paid for it.

Since then, countless sums have been spent on attempts to win the America's Cup. The most persistent challenger was Thomas Lipton. Born in Glasgow, where his family owned a grocery store, he left for the US aged 14 with just $8 in his pocket and returned a millionaire. By the time he launched the first of his five challenges for the America’s Cup in 1899, he controlled 10 per cent of the world’s tea supply, yet he won only two of the 16 races he competed in for the trophy.

In nine contests between 1937 and 1983, the challenger won only three races. Two were by Australian media mogul Frank Packer, who spent more than $700,000 to win one race in 1962.

Eight years later, he had to dig deeper to come through the competition’s first qualification regatta, in which he faced Baron Marcel Bich, founder of Bic pens, who led four unsuccessful Cup campaigns. In the final, Packer won two races, but one was stripped after an acrimonious protest by the host club. His effort did at least show the world that Australians, who were dominant in tennis at the time, could be competitive in another sport.

The breakthrough came in 1983 when Australia II became the first foreign winner. It was owned by Alan Bond, who made his money in property, brewing and broadcasting, and reportedly spent $5 million on his successful America’s Cup campaign — after three failed attempts. He arrived in Rhode Island for the decisive contest with an innovative winged keel and a golden wrench with which he said he would remove the trophy from its plinth.

Perhaps this pursuit of sailing’s Everest took Bond’s attention away from his business empire. Within a decade, he was declared bankrupt, his company owing more than $6 billion. Five years after that he began a four-year spell in prison for fraud – yet most people will remember him for what he did on the water.

$65 million

The Aussie's supremacy was short lived, with the USA winning the trophy back in 1987. In 1992, US oilman Bill Koch spent $65 million on defending the America’s Cup. Ten years later, the qualification series featured five billionaires, including Larry Ellison, co-founder of Oracle, and Patrizio Bertelli, CEO of Prada. In all, $500 million was spent by the challengers. “It’s so cheap, I’m surprised more people don’t do this,” Ellison quipped at the time.

There is a greater reason than financial gain, though. The America’s Cup is the last billionaires’ plaything where those with money can join in. Newspaper owners don’t get their fingers inky; football club owners never strap on their boots. An America’s Cup backer gets to sail with his staff, even if the speed of modern boats makes it unwise to do so in competition. “I want to be driving the winning boat,” Ellison said in 2002.

Photo: Andrew Flynn

$75 million

Few enter the Cup to make money, but it has commercial benefits. Auckland did very well out of hosting the America’s Cup in 2000 and 2003. It created 1,000 jobs and brought $75 million into the local economy, which explains why the New Zealand government supports its country’s bids.

Hosting the Cup does not always pay out in the long run, though. The Spanish port of Valencia, which staged the 2007 event, received $500 million of investment for regeneration and supposedly brought $3 billion in benefit to the city. It even helped to attract a Formula One race to Valencia.

Yet it was all built on sand. Cheap credit and corrupt politicians turned a boom town into a ghost town. Today, many of the America’s Cup buildings lie empty.

Photo: North Sails

$300 million

When you are worth more than $40 billion, as Ellison is, losing battles matters more than losing money. Some say that he spent more than $300 million on Oracle Team USA's successful defence of the trophy in September 2013 in what turned out to be one of the greatest sporting stories, with the Oracle racing team beating Emirates Team New Zealand 9-8 after trailing 8-1.

Building two massive catamarans — a racer and a spare — and running a 130-strong team of sailors, designers and so on, does not come cheap, especially with the leading staff on salaries of at least $20,000 a month, often a lot more.

Meanwhile, Land Rover BAR's bid for the 2017 America’s Cup is expected to cost at least $100 million. One thing is for certain ahead of next summer’s Bermuda showdown — whoever wins will have seriously deep pockets.

Kirsten Neuschafer wins 2022 Golden Globe Race and makes history

  • Katy Stickland
  • April 27, 2023

Kirsten Neuschafer has become the first woman to win a solo, round the world yacht race after winning the 2022 Golden Globe Race

Kirsten Neuschafer made it very clear from the start that she was aiming to win the 2022 Golden Globe Race . And now the South African skipper has achieved her goal, and made history in the process.

After just over 235 days at sea, the sailor crossed the finish line off Les Sables d’Olonne in France at 9pm CEST on 27 April 2023 and became the first woman to win a solo, round the world yacht race.

After a painfully slow final few miles as she ghosted towards the finish, Neuschafer actually crossed the finish line around 10 hours behind competitor, Simon Curwen, but a previous stop for repairs for the British sailor had already relegated him to the Chichester class (for those who make a single landfall).

Second-time Golden Globe Race competitor, Abhilash Tomy will be the next boat across the finish line, lying some 100nm astern of Neuschafer. That these three will finish within the space of a couple of days after 235 days at sea speaks to the high level of competition between these front runners.

Tired but jubilant, the focussed 39-year-old, who throughout much of the race had no idea she was leading, celebrated a hard-fought victory. Her Cape George 36 cutter, Minnehaha was then towed up the channel to the pontoon as thousands of people cheered and applauded her incredible achievement.

Among them were 2022 Golden Globe Race skippers Ian Herbert-Jones, who had just arrived from Cape Town, having been rescued from his dismasted boat just weeks before, and French sailor Damien Guillou , whose race ended after windvane steering failure on approach to Cape Town.

‘I feel very emotional and honoured,’ said Neuschafer after finishing the race. ‘I am never going to forget the welcome. I want to thank my fellow skippers as without them, there would have been no race. Simon was very difficult as he was always in front of me and I knew Abhilash was close, and this encouraged me to navigate as quickly as possible.’

1997 Vendée Globe veteran Catherine Chabaud, the first female sailor to race solo non stop around the world without assistance, and the winner of the 2018 Golden Globe Race, Jean-Luc van den Heede, were there to greet Neuschafer as she stepped off her boat after nearly 8 months at sea.

Her official finishing time was 233 days, 20 hours, 43 minutes and 47 seconds. This takes into account the 35 hour time compensation and 30 litre fuel allowance given to her following her role in the rescue of fellow race skipper, Tapio Lehtinen,

Neuschafer said she was driven to keep going, even in calms and the doldrums on the way up the Atlantic, where she regularly went swimming to deal with the frustration.

‘I never thought I would give up; there was no reason to think this as I had full confidence in the boat. I never doubted I would get to the finish line.’

Throughout the 2022 Golden Globe Race , Kirsten Neuschafer has fought to be at the front of the fleet, her ambition to win driving her more than many of the other entrants.

She deliberately chose a boat that she believed could win the race and survive the Southern Ocean.

Speaking to Yachting Monthly from Prince Edward Island, where she was refitting the boat, she said: ‘From the outset it wasn’t a question of taking any boat that was available and in my price range; it was to choose a boat that I believe can win and can survive the Southern Ocean , and then get that boat at any cost, no matter how much work.’

Her choice of the Cape George 36 paid off. Minnehaha has the longest LWL in the fleet, and with a generous cutter rigged 806sq ft sail plan, the boat achieved slightly higher speeds than her counterparts.

As a result, she holds the 2022 Golden Globe Race records for the best 4 hour speed average (9.80 knots), best 24 hour distance (218.9nm) and best 7 day distance (1,216.2nm).

The boat’s performance was evident after her average start in the race, but she constantly pushed, choosing to hand steer the boat rather than just rely on her Hydrovane windvane steering to make up for lost ground. Her disappointment coming 6th through the first race gate at Lanzarote was evident, but her motivation was stronger.

Having exited the Bay of Biscay in 10th place, she was soon climbing the leader board. Coming down the Atlantic, she chose a more coastal route to keep the island of Trinidade to port; a strategy to make the most of the current and receive weather information via her weather fax so she could identify the location of the South Atlantic High.

She took the longer, southern route with a more comfortable point of sail to reach the race’s second gate at Cape Town; a strategy that paid off when she was second through the gate behind the then race leader Simon Curwen .

Golden Globe Race: Kirsten Neuschafer: ‘I’ll give it my best shot but I’m pretty disillusioned’

Third place Golden Globe Race skipper Kirsten Neuschafer has been left frustrated by the lack of wind, which has also…

By this time, Curwen was extending his lead as he began crossing the Indian Ocean. Days after leaving Cape Town, Kirsten Neuschafer diverted from her race route to rescue fellow entrant Tapio Lehtinen, after his Gaia 36, Asteria sank around 450 miles south east of South Africa.

At the time, Neuschafer was 105 miles from Lehtinen’s position; she hand steered through the night, posting speeds of 7 knots to reach him the following morning. Once safely onboard, they waited for the arrival of the Hong Kong-flagged bulk carrier Darya Gayatri , which would take Lehtinen to port.

Neuschafer was awarded a 35 hour time compensation and a 30 litre fuel allowance by the Golden Globe Race organisers.

Back in race mode, she pushed hard across the Indian Ocean, gaining 500 miles on Curwen and arrived just 29.5 hours behind him in Hobart. She briefly took first place when passing through Tasmania but then became trapped in no wind zones around New Zealand for several days.

This allowed Curwen to extend his lead by 900 miles; by this time, he was also sailing in a different weather system to Neuschafer and her nearest rival, Abhilash Tomy .

Neuschafer and Tomy swapped second and third place positions across the South Pacific, Neuschafer often frustrated by the calms, and her inability to find the better wind, which was often in the race’s Pacific exclusion zone.

She dived for 8 hours to remove the barnacles from the boat’s hull to improve her speed.

Curwen, who had a 1,200 mile lead, then reported the failure of his Hydrovane self-steering gear , which forced him to make a 1,000 mile detour to Chile to make repairs; this also put him in the Chichester Class for entrants who make one stop.

This meant both Neuschafer and Tomy were back in the race for first place.

After 150 days of racing, Neuschafer took the lead and was the first to round Cape Horn on 15 February 2023.

But her routing decision up the Atlantic allowed Tomy to make gains in his Rustler 36, Bayanat , despite battling problems with his Wind Pilot windvane steering, his rig, rigging, and having to hand-stitch his mainsail after it ripped in two.

It has been a frustrating week for Kirsten Neuschafer as she makes her way towards the equator

Kirsten Neuschafer took a more easterly route up the Atlantic. Credit: Kirsten Neuschäfer/GGR2022

Unlike Tomy, who stayed close to the rhumb line, Kirsten Neuschafer, who was sailing more conservatively due to a bend in Minehaha’s bowsprit, decided to take a more easterly route.

At the time she said: ‘I read up in  Ocean Passages for the World what is the best route for this time of year and the route is to pass 80 miles south of the Falklands and make for a point to the east of 35°S and 30°W at this time of year, and this is what I’ve been doing. I don’t know if it was a good idea to follow the suggestions or not.’

Doubting her easterly route, she took a more northerly route; it was a decision which would prove incredibly frustrating for Kirsten Neuschafer, who sailed through more light winds than any other 2022 Golden Globe Race sailor while sailing up the Atlantic, and meant she crossed a very wide doldrums.

This allowed both Tomy and Curwen to make gains on her position before Curwen in his Biscay 36, Clara , took the lead and become the first of the 2022 Golden Globe Race fleet to cross the finish line.

MSC Cruises Upgrade Bid Program – enhance your cruise

Enhance your cruise experience with the MSC Cruises upgrade bid program

Are you considering an upgrade on your next MSC Cruises vacation? You may land the stateroom of your dreams in just a few simple steps at a fraction of the cost. Let’s dive into MSC Cruises’ upgrade program, a bid-based upgrade system designed to enhance your cruising experience.

The bidding program allows eligible passengers to place bids on stateroom upgrades. From ocean views and balcony staterooms to the most luxurious suites at sea, this program offers the opportunity to score a fantastic upgrade and elevate your cruise experience.

So, how does the MSC Cruises Upgrade Bid Program work?

Once you’ve booked your cruise, you may receive an invitation to participate in the program. Submit your bid, sit back, and wait for the results. As its name suggests, the program operates on a bidding system—that means the higher your bid, the better your chances of scoring an upgrade.

Quick navigation

Understanding the MSC Cruises Upgrade Bid Program

The MSC Cruises Upgrade Bid Program allows you to submit bids to upgrade your existing stateroom.

To participate, you’ll receive an invitation via email from MSC Cruises if your booking is eligible. The email will contain instructions and an invitation to submit an offer. After submitting your bid, you’ll patiently wait to find out if your bid was successful. If your bid wins, you’ll be notified, and your stateroom will be upgraded accordingly.

It’s essential to remember that submitting a bid does not guarantee an upgrade. Upgrades depend on availability, your offer’s competitiveness, and other factors MSC Cruises determines.

Eligibility Criteria

Not all MSC Cruise bookings are eligible for the Upgrade Bid Program. To qualify for the program, your booking must meet specific criteria. Some eligibility factors include:

  • Your booking must be made directly through MSC Cruises or an authorized travel partner.
  • You must have a confirmed reservation and have already paid the total fare.

If you meet these criteria and MSC still hasn’t sent you an email invitation, don’t hesitate to contact MSC directly to inquire about your booking’s eligibility. Not all bookings will be eligible.

How to participate in the MSC Upgrade Bid Program

To participate in the MSC Upgrade Bid Program, you must first book a cruise with MSC Cruises. After booking, you may receive an offer to upgrade your stateroom through the program. If you receive an upgrade offer, follow these steps:

  • Review the available upgrade options : MSC Cruises will present various stateroom options for you to bid on. These options may range from Ocean View and Balcony staterooms to more luxurious suites.
  • Decide on your bid amount : Each available upgrade will have a minimum bid amount, which you can increase to improve your chances of getting the upgrade. Remember that the bidding range varies depending on the type of stateroom you want to upgrade to.
  • Submit your bid : Once you have decided on your bid amount, submit your bid through the Plusgrade Program platform. Make sure to double-check the details of your bid before confirming.

Bid Evaluation and Notification

After submitting your bid, MSC Cruises will evaluate all received bids for the available stateroom upgrades. The evaluation process considers various factors, such as:

  • Your bid amount
  • The number of bids received for the same stateroom
  • The availability of the desired staterooms

While your bid is being evaluated, you may be able to view your bid status, which often indicates your chances of winning the upgrade.

Once the evaluation process is complete, MSC Cruises will notify you via email about the outcome of your bid.

What are the benefits of the Upgrade Bid Program?

Upgrading your cabin can provide several benefits, such as enhanced room features, exclusive amenities, and dining options.

Enhanced Room Features

You’ll enjoy more spacious and well-appointed staterooms when you upgrade your cabin. Upgraded cabins often have better views, larger balconies, and more comfortable seating areas. You may also find bigger bathrooms and additional storage space for your belongings.

Exclusive Amenities

Upgraded cabins often come with exclusive amenities you wouldn’t have access to in a standard cabin. For example, you might gain access to a private pool area, exclusive lounges, or priority embarkation and disembarkation services. Some upgrades include Butler Service or a personalized Concierge Service to help you book reservations and arrange special requests during your cruise.

Dining Options

A cabin upgrade can also provide you with additional dining options. Upgrading to a suite or a cabin that is part of a specific “class” or “experience” might grant you access to exclusive restaurants or dining areas unavailable to all passengers. These dining venues usually offer a more upscale ambiance and a higher cuisine level, making your cruise dining experience even more enjoyable.

Tips for a Successful Upgrade Bid

When participating in the MSC Cruises upgrade bid program, think about the following:

Your bid amount plays an essential role in securing an upgrade. If you bid too low, your chances of being selected will likely be slim, while bidding too high may not be cost-effective and may not be in line with your budget. Remember that all bids are per person, based on double occupancy. Consider how much you are willing to spend, and try to find a middle ground between the minimum and maximum bid.

Be mindful of the bidding range specified by MSC Cruises, and contact them for advice if you are unsure. Check if you are bidding a per-person price or for all cabin occupants.

Although there’s no definitive “best time” to submit your upgrade bid, be aware of the time frame given by MSC Cruises and submit your bid as soon as possible.

Monitor your email for any updates or notifications on the upgrade process. MSC Cruises may provide additional information on available upgrades and specific time frames to submit your bids. Staying informed and actively engaged with the upgrade process will be key to maximizing your chances of success.

Finally, remember that the upgrade program’s primary goal is to enhance your MSC Cruises experience and sell more available cabins in the higher price category. Approach the process with a clear understanding of what you want, your budget, and the potential value of the upgrade.

Common questions about MSC’s bidding program:

How can i participate in the msc cruises bidding program.

Sign up for an MSC account via the cruise line’s web page. You must agree that they can send you MSC offers and marketing promotions to receive an email about possible upgrades and the bidding program.

Can I participate in the bidding program if I have booked through a travel agent?

Yes, you should be able to participate if you have booked directly with the cruise or via a travel agent or supplier. Be sure to confirm this when booking and ask your agent to verify that your email address is in the booking so that you can receive emails directly from MSC Cruises.

You can also sign up to receive emails from MSC Cruises directly on their website and link this to your booking number. You must allow MSC Cruises to send you offers and marketing promotions to be able to receive emails about the bidding program for your particular cruise.

How do I know how much to bid to be in with a chance of an upgrade?

MSC Cruises sets a minimum bid amount for the upgrade you can participate in. You can bid the minimum amount or increase it to an amount you feel comfortable paying should you win the bid.

Can I cancel my bid after I win an upgrade if I change my mind?

If your bid is successful and you win an upgrade based on your bid amount, you must pay the bid amount, and you cannot cancel your bid.

How can I find out if my bid is successful?

MSC Cruises will not contact you if your bid is not successful. Remember that you can receive notification of a successful bid very close to your sailing date, so keep an eye on your email. It may also be possible to find out by clicking on the link in the original email sent to you, and it will tell you if you have a successful bid.

Is there a chance I will receive an offer to make a bid?

The upgrade system and the opportunity to bid on a cabin in a higher price category are based on the availability of your particular sailing date at a given time before the sail date.

Most often, customers who book the Bella or Fantastica experience will receive an offer if cabins are available, and sometimes, if you have booked the Aurea experience, you may be able to bid on an upgrade to the Yacht Club category.

Again, it all depends on the availability of cabins at a given time when MSC decides to send out a bulk email offering upgrades via their bidding system.

What should I look out for when participating in the bidding program?

As with everything you need to pay for, make sure you read all the terms and conditions of the bidding program before you decide to participate and bid. If you are unsure of any information, we recommend contacting MSC Cruises directly and asking them before placing a bid.

Can I cancel my upgrade bid before the cruise made a decision ???

Hello David! If your bid is successful and you win an upgrade based on your bid amount, you must pay the bid amount, and you cannot cancel your bid. If you have made a bid but have not received an answer and would like to withdraw, you must contact MSC Cruises and ask them if it’s possible to remove your bid. However, we recommend asking for written confirmation from them if they say they can do this.

We received an invite to bid on our upcoming cruise but when I put info in it says you are unable to bid and to check back.

Hi Linda Thank you for contacting us at CruiseTrail! As you were unable to make the bid, it could be that all available cabins are now filled. However, I recommend contacting MSC Cruises directly to check that there is no technical problem with the upgrade system that prohibits you from placing a bid, so you don’t miss out. If a bid is still possible, request a new offer to be sent to you by email and try again. Good Luck!

How do I bid for a yacht club upgrade I’m in a balcony cabin now with premium drinks package

Hello Diane

Thank you for your enquiry! Be sure to sign up for an MSC account via the cruise line’s web page. You must agree that they can send you MSC offers and marketing promotions to receive an email about possible upgrades and the bidding program. If you do not receive an offer to upgrade your stateroom, I recommend calling the cruise line (or your travel agent if you have booked through a 3rd party) and ask if they know when offers to upgrade are planned to be sent out.

Sarah, we are booked in a lower level category that does not include the drinks package. If I am offered an upgrade to the Yacht Club, would I then have the benefit of free drinks for YC guests?

Thanks Cliff Davidson

Thank you for contacting us. Firstly I must apologize for the very late reply, your enquiry has slipped right by us and I have only just spotted it. The latest information we have from MSC Cruises is that you would NOT get the all the benefits of the Yacht Club category, you would only receive the actual cabin upgrade to Yacht Club category.

We would also add that policy can change at any time, so do double check this information at the time of booking.

We hope you enjoy a wonderful experience with MSC Cruises.

Hi I am trying to find on MSC Website where I say I will receive marketing materials and advertising so I can then register? for a bid for a future upgrade. I do not know where it is to tick the box. What section? Thanks so much

Hi Julie-anne, Thank you for contacting us! Unfortunately, navigating MSC Cruises’ website is not that easy. You should be able to register your email address when booking. Alternatively, I recommend contacting MSC Cruises; your region’s telephone will appear at the top of their website homepage. Give them your booking number, and they can insert your email address. I hope this helps, this is how I used to register my customers when they wanted to participate in the MSC Bid program.

I went back and researched our cruise on MSC website and can see 11 rooms available for booking in MSC YACHT CLUB DELUXE SUITE DECK 16-19 Roughly $6500 for the 4 of us and 5 rooms of MSC YACHT CLUB DELUXE GRAND SUITE DECK at roughly $7100. Even with current offer was roughly $2000 less then current prices which I hope is a good deal. I only bid on the YC because the Grand Suite Aurea shows sold out.

Looking for some feedback/advice from anyone that has had success with bidding/offering for YC.

My question is how soon do they usually make the decisions on picking the upgrade offers?

My understanding is that drinks are only free in YC areas, If we have the "Free Drinks and WiFi Package (Easy Plus Package)"

We would keep this if we are upgraded, correct? I assume that we can use our Easy Plus on the rest of the ship and get fancier drinks withing YC areas?

Any advice or tips appreciated in advance!

I was also in Aurea, and did a bid of $50.00 over the minimum and won a bid to 18015. The aproval came in about one week. Our cruise is May14th.

Your understanding is correct. Any drink is OK in the YC, and outside, the easy plus takes over. That's what I was told by an MSC rep.

Ok well thats intresting for sure. I received multiple emails from MSC. Each one the max and mininum was diffrent. The emails I received closer to departure the min and max both decreased. In my case the YC upgrade Minimum was $815 and max $1370 pp I am bidding on the higher end in hopes of getting the upgrade. I curious if they take in cosideration the total amount you paid. My inital booking amount for 4 people (kids sale free) was very reasonable for balcony.

Edit now I am realizing I had Oringinally booked Bella B1 Balcony booked but the upgrade page show Aurea balcony now

Outside of YC you get the premium drinks package not the Easy plus.

Is there a link to bid on an upgrade?

You get sent an email with an offer to bid, they are randomly sent, not everyone gets one. You need to make sure you have ticked the box in your profile to receive offers.

If you are booked in YC, by original booking or via the bid process, you do not require any other drinks package on the booking. Outwith the YC areas, everything within the Premium Extra package is available to you. In practice that means any drink by the glass up to 13 euro or, on US sailings, up to $15.

Any drinks purchased above those price limits are charged to your account in full, and not the differential as with some other cruiselines.

With the YC experience, WIFI is 'free' i.e. included within the price.

Thanks for the info and clearing that up. There was several places I read that made it appear we only get the premium drinks within the YC area. Its good to know the premium drink package is what we are upgraded to and it can be used outside the YC..

Up until MSC reclassified the drinks packages last year. YC was a bit nebulous as to what was included in the drinks package (outside of YC), they have made it much clearer now by stating the YC guests get the Premium extra package.

How long is the trip?  If seven days and you are seeing $6-7k, that is about the normal price for four paying outright although I have seen some recent lower prices.

Correct 7 Day Caribbean on Seashore

YC drink package is valid over the entire ship and Ocean Caye too.

You also get unlimited use of Spa (adults).

It is a nice way to travel for sure...

But as others have said, the bid minimums are not always lower than if you bought/booked YC in advance...especially if you get any discounts, like Military, Educator, 1st responder, Voyagers, Casino, etc...

Yeah I am really curious as the regular going rates for these rooms. With our current bid plus what we already paid for the Bella Balcony we'd be at roughly $4700. I am checking the YC rooms now and seeing it $6100+ with 4 of us. Makes me think I'd get a good deal but you tell me could we get the same room for under 4500 booking in advance for 4? My wife thinks we should lower our bid some since there are 16 rooms available but I'd rather leave it on the higher end for better opportunity to be chosen for the upgrade. On the upgrade confirmation email looks like they Upgraded us to Balcony Aurea room on the 9th floor. We had Bella experience booked does that mean we get all the Aurea perks (This is of course if we don't get the YC offer upgrade)?

There are too many variables to know what bid will be successful.

We depart Saturday and have Deluxe Balcony, Fantastica, with Easy Plus Drink Package and basic WFI for two devices...two adults in cabin.

This is offer we received:

We're on the same cruise.

This is on par with the offer I received. The top end was $1400+ pp. If you look at the YC rooms for the 5/14 sailing there is only 1 room left. We are on the sailing after yours and can see 16 YC rooms available for booking. Not sure how they pick or gauge but crossing my fingers that higher bid may win the offer. I'll post back my results here either way.

The bidding process is done by a 3rd party, and no one has been able to figure out how it's done. The same goes for Royal, Celebrity, and NCL.

Seems about right.  We are currently onboard the Divina, 4 night, Deluxe Balcony Fanastica with the Wifi and Drinks.  Our offer was $510 PP as a minimum to upgrade which we did not bid on.

If I were to book an inside or balcony Bella no perks could I still get the option bid on a YC?  Would they start the bidding higher for a YC balcony then the package you had?  I was wondering if it would be best to book the cheapest possible cabin and then if no YC offer was forthcoming to just change the booking to the drink package offer as I presume you can still do that after final payment?

Strange I received a separate email today for the upgrade program.

When I click on the link it allows me to submit an offer for YC Deluxe suite. I've already submitted an offer prior to for same room.

I submitted a 2nd offer a few $ more than my first. I assume they'll only consider 1 of the 2 offers I submitted ? On the check out page it says you will only ever be charged for one upgrade if its accepted. So hopefully they don't try to charge me twice. Its strange that there automated system even allows me to submit multiple offers for the same category room.

Not everyone receives an upgrade email and when you do there is certainly a consideration for the "original price paid" and the minimum bid to upgrade.  For example, if you paid $2K for your cabin your minimum bid might be $500 per person whereas if you had paid $750 it might be $1200.  (Math not exact, but you get the picture.)

Makes sense.

Not sure if this helps, but on our 4/28 three night cruise on Divina, I had booked an Aurea balcony. I received an upgrade email and bid $10 over the minimum (considered poor bid) and was accepted. Yacht club was awesome 😎

What It Actually Means To Win A Boat On The Price Is Right

Drew Carey posing

" The Price is Right " is one of the longest running and most beloved TV game shows of all time. Originally hosted by game show legend Bill Cullen in the 1950s, the show was revamped by dream production team Mark Goodson and Bill Todman for a successful run starting in 1972 with Bob Barker . Actor and comedian Drew Carey took over as host in 2007 following Barker's retirement, per IMDb .

After lucky audience members are invited to "come on down," they earn the chance to compete for prizes and cash, including vehicles and luxury vacations. Over the years, games played on "The Price is Right" have included the Dice Game, the Clock Game, Lucky Seven, Plinko, and the Showcase Showdown, which gives players the chance to score an eye-popping prize, such as a car or a boat.

However, winners don't get to cruise out of the studio with their high-end prizes. Winning a boat on "The Price is Right," for example, is not exactly smooth sailing for the recipient. Here's what happens following a big win on "The Price Is Right."

Winners shell out big bucks for taxes and don't get their loot right away

The state of California is the big winner on "The Price is Right." Winners must pay taxes up front before they are given gain access to the prizes, according to Mentalfloss . The taxes must be filed in the state in which the prize was one, which is almost always California for "The Price is Right." Not only is the cost of a big prize such as a boat treated as income, but the price is based on the actual retail value of the prize (just as depicted on the show), not any discount producers may get. Mike Richards,  " Price is Right " executive producer, explained to  the New York Times that the show mails a tax letter to victorious contestants, letting them know how much in taxes they must pay before they can claim their winnings.

However, not every winner takes the prize. "Price is Right" contestant Katie Wey told The Post Star that the $60,000 MasterCraft X30 waterskiing boat she won on the show was sold back to the dealer. While she did get to test out the 23-foot boat, the then-college student turned in the keys because she had nowhere to keep the prize. After leaving "The Price is Right" with a total in prizes valued at $83,383, she sold the boat back to Castaway Marina and used the money to pay her $17,000 in taxes, buying herself a new car.

Ukraine war latest: Russia now in 'direct confrontation' with NATO, Kremlin says; rescuers killed in 'double tap' strike

In Brussels, members of NATO are marking 75 years of the alliance and discussing how to support Ukraine. Elsewhere, four people have been killed in a drone strike overnight in Kharkiv. Listen to a podcast on how Russia is avoiding the effects of Western sanctions while you scroll.

  • Explained: How the war has strayed outside Ukraine's borders
  • Big picture : What's happening with war?

One of the emergency responders killed in a Russian "double tap" strike earlier was a 52-year-old firefighter whose son, also a firefighter, was putting out a blaze several buildings away.

Ukraine's interior ministry shared footage of the younger man, Volodymyr, kneeling on the ground and sobbing after learning his father had been killed.

Two emergency workers consoled him as he wept.

Vladyslav Loginov, 52, had "devoted his life to work in the fire service" before his death overnight, interior minister Ihor Klymenko said.

His son Volodymyr had followed in his footsteps to become a guard chief at a nearby fire station.

The father and son were deployed to the scene in Kharkiv, northeastern Ukraine, after an initial drone attack.

They had been working a few houses away from each other when the secondary attack hit.

The Finnish government has said it will extend the closure of its border with Russia until further notice.

It also added several ports to its list where travel would be prohibited.

Finland, which recently joined NATO, closed its land borders with Russia late last year after a surge in migrant crossings from its neighbour.

It accused Moscow of weaponising migration in response to its NATO accession.

Russia has denied this.

Finland's interior minister Mari Rantanen said: "Finnish authorities see this as a long-term situation. We have not seen anything this spring that would lead us to conclude that the situation has changed meaningfully."

French President Emmanuel Macron has said he has no doubt Russia will try to target the Paris Olympics this summer.

"I have no doubt whatsoever, including in terms of information," Mr Macron said.

France has already increased its security alert to the highest level in the wake of the deadly terror attack near Moscow last month.

The attack on the Crocus Concert Hall, which killed at least 144 people, was claimed by Islamic State.

Tens of thousands of police officers, soldiers and security agents will be deployed to protect the Games this summer.

One of the main aims of the NATO alliance is to create a pact of mutual assistance if a member is attacked.

Article 5 of the treaty stipulates that an attack on any of NATO's members must be met with a united response from the rest.

Here's exactly what Article 5 says...

"The parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all and consequently they agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defence recognized by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, will assist the party or parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.  "Any such armed attack and all measures taken as a result thereof shall immediately be reported to the Security Council. Such measures shall be terminated when the Security Council has taken the measures necessary to restore and maintain international peace and security."

So far, Article 5 has only been invoked once.

This was in response to the 9/11 attacks on the United States.

The alliance had already identified terrorism as one of the risks affecting NATO's security, so less than 24 hours after the attacks the decision was made to invoke Article 5.

NATO members responded with direct military action in Afghanistan, as well as intelligence sharing and diplomatic actions.

A recent close call was when two missiles struck Poland in November 2022, killing two men.

The missiles appeared to have come from the direction of Ukraine but it was initially not clear which side had fired them or whether it was intentional.

This started a frenzy over whether Article 5 may need to be triggered as Poland is a NATO country.

However, it was later determined the projectiles were errant air defence missiles fired by Ukraine in response to a Russian attack.

Top Republican officials have dashed hopes aid to Ukraine could be passed soon, telling Bloomberg a vote is still "weeks away".

House Speaker Mike Johnson had earlier said the vote would be held "right after Easter", but this has not materialised.

American aid to Ukraine has been delayed since autumn last year due to contradicting opinions in Congress - with Republican supporters of Donald Trump largely trying to block the bill.

The $95bn aid package to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan passed in the Senate with bipartisan support in February, but Mr Johnson has so far stalled on bringing it to a vote in the Republican-led House.

Ukraine has warned its army could be forced to retreat further if US military aid continues to be delayed.

Here's the latest pictures from the NATO headquarters in Brussels, where foreign ministers took part in a ceremony marking the alliance's 75th anniversary.

Relations between Russia and NATO have slid to the level of direct confrontation, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has claimed.

He alleged some NATO countries are involved in the war in Ukraine, and that the military alliance is expanding its military infrastructure towards Russia's borders.

"In fact, NATO continues to demonstrate its essence, because NATO was envisioned as an alliance, configured, created and managed by the United States as an instrument of confrontation, primarily on the European continent," Mr Peskov said.

"NATO continues to fulfil its functions in this regard, which, however, in no way contributes to security, predictability and stability on the continent, but on the contrary - represents a destabilising factor."

NATO is marking its 75th anniversary today, with foreign ministers meeting to discuss long-term support for Ukraine.

The alliance says it has tried to avoid direct confrontation with Russia, and this morning British Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron ruled out putting boots on the ground in Ukraine.

We're getting more details now on an overnight Russian "double tap" strike that left three emergency responders dead.

Emergency services had raced to rescue a resident trapped under rubble, while ladders reached up from fire engines to heavily damaged flats at the top of high-rise buildings.

One of the buildings was then hit by a secondary drone strike, killing the emergency workers.

"Windows, all of the glass, everything was knocked out. There's nothing left," Zhanetta Kravchenko, a 77-year-old resident, told Reuters.

"We are alive, at least, and I'm grateful for that."

Ukrainian broadcaster Suspilne said emergency crews had been unable to work for at least an hour for fear of further strikes.

The Ukrainian foreign minister has expressed his increasing frustration at allies refusing to provide more Patriot missile defence batteries.

"It is impossible to comprehend why allies cannot find additional batteries to deliver them to the place where ballistic missiles are being fired everyday," Dmytro Kuleba said, as he attended a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels.

The Patriot missile systems would be used by Ukraine to counter Russian missile and drone strikes.

Just this morning, four people were killed in the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv by a Russian drone strike.

NATO allies have been debating a plan to provide more predictable military support to Ukraie in the coming years.

"We strongly believe that support to Ukraine should be less dependent on short-term, voluntary offers and more dependent on long-term NATO commitments," secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg said.

As we've been reporting, NATO foreign ministers are in Brussels for talks about the long-term support of Ukraine.

Today's meeting is important for another reason - it also marks 75 years since the alliance was formed.

What started as a 12-country alliance has now expanded to 32 members, with Sweden the latest addition.

NATO ministers held a ceremony today to mark the day the alliance's founding treaty was signed, although a bigger commemoration is planned when leaders meet in Washington in July.

Hundreds of staff filled the vast air terminal-like space at the centre of NATO's sprawling Brussels headquarters, while scores of others looked down from glassed walkways and stairways as Belgian and Dutch military bands played the NATO Hymn, the original Washington Treaty laid before them.

"I like the Washington Treaty. Not least because it is very short," NATO secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg said with a smile.

"Just 14 paragraphs over a few pages. Never has a single document with so few words meant so much to so many people. So much security. So much prosperity, and so much peace."
