It features one of the most well-preserved medieval castles in Europe (a World Heritage Site in fact), a castle that is still pretty much the center of the main city of Rhodes. Once the base of operations of the Knights Order of Saint John, the Medieval Old Town is now packed with restaurants, bars and sun-baked, bougainvillea-filled verandas. Studded with monuments from the classical to the hellenistic to Byzantium to crusader and ottoman times, Rhodes is definitely a must for anyone even remotely interested in history.

Our yacht charter base on the island of Rhodes is perfect for exploring the Dodecanese Islands including the popular islands of Kos and Patmos, as well as the relaxed islands of Leros and Symi.

Rhodes is easily accessible by charter flights from many European countries and is a short connecting flight for those flying in to Athens.

Rhodes is the largest island of the Dodecanese, and, apart from a unique place sail around itself, a perfect starting point for exploring the surrounding islands and enjoying probably the most crystal-clear waters you have ever sailed in. All of the 14 beautiful, unique islands in the Dodecanese are worth visiting and sailing around. One who wishes to see most, if not all, of the marvels we call the Dodecanese, should reserve sufficient time to do so, which is precisely our first and foremost recommendation!

One week charters from Rhodes will usually include heading north towards Kos with stops at the islands of Symi and its picturesque harbor of breathtaking beauty, the island of Nysiros and its still active volcano, and the laid-back, unassuming island beauties of Tilos and Halki. During summer the prevailing wind in the area is the annual Meltemi that blows strong, usually at force 4-6, from the North West. Founded as early as 1000 years BC this is worth a day trip in its own right. The Byzantine churches of Lindos are relics of another era of Greek history and equally worth spending time in and around. The Street of Knights is a relic of the Ottoman Empire, as are the odd medieval castle and fort you will find.

For those who appreciate nature, the mountainous interior of Rhodes is full of flora and fauna that will entice and excite. Head into one or two of the villages that remain almost untouched by the tourism economy, and are welcoming and relaxed to those who wander by.

Explore Rhodes By Renting A Yacht

As the largest island in the Dodecanese island chain, Rhodes Island is worth exploring for a couple of days in its own right, whether on a bareboat charter or crewed yacht charter. You never know what you may find on a Rhodes yacht charter - from ancient ruins to an occasional sandy beach only accessible by sea, to hidden anchorages that you could be just yours for the evening.

That said, the 12 main Dodecanese Islands are great for an island-hopping adventure on a boat rental on the Aegean Sea. Less popular (and crowded) than the nearby Cyclades, you will find that these have a different culture to their Cycladic neighbours.

The architecture has a more Ottoman influence as against that of the Cyclades that is more Greek. You will find mediaeval castles, ancient Greek ruins and of course, miles and miles of beautiful sandy beaches.

Visit Samos with its astounding inland scenery and sanctuary devoted to the Greek goddess Hera and mountain cave church where an icon of the Virgin Mary was allegedly found.

Nearby Kalymnos is a rock climbing destination, holding an annual international rock climbing festival, thanks to its severe terrain. If hanging off a cliff by your fingertips isn't quite your bag it can be fun to watch.

As a final example of the islands you can visit, Leros is an island known for its laid back village way of life. There are castles and palaces to be found in some of them - always worth nosing in to see what's about as you never know what you will find.

How To Get To Rhodes

Rhodes has a major international airport but can also be accessed by ferry from nearby Marmaris and from Athens.

Rhodes International Airport

During the summer months, Rhodes International Airport is served by a large number of European airlines. From there you can take a bus or taxi to your marina or hotel. There are a number of flights daily from Athens for those flying in from outside of Europe.

Athens is an 18-hour ferry ride away for those who wish to take a different way to Rhodes City or are flying from a country outside of Europe.

The Turkish resort of Marmaris and its Dalaman International Airport is far closer than Athens, with just a couple of hours on the ferry.

There are several marinas on Rodos Island. The one in Rhodes Town including the very new Rhodes Marina is also known as Mandraki Marina. 7 days - Dodecanese Islands: With the island of Kos as the mid-point, this trip is an uphill-downhill sailing holiday with the first couple of days beating and close reaching on the Aegean via Halki, Tilos and Nisyros to the island of Kos, before heading east to Symi close to the Turkish coast. Kos is another major tourist island like Rhodes but you will see other sides like the almost untouched Halki, which was uninhabited for many years due to persistent raids from pirates.

14 days - Dodecanese Islands: This is an opportunity to 'do the Dodecanese' with daily sails of up to 40NM heading north as far as Ikaria. You will miss some of the islands (there are more than 12 in the archipelago) but it will introduce you to the different subcultures within the chain. You will see volcanic islands, mountains and villages seemingly lost in time.

Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Rhodes

The sailing season runs from late April to October with July and August being the busiest months for yacht charter.

The sea is cooler - often quite chilly - at the beginning of the sailing season but there is rainfall in Spring. As the days lengthen you will still see green fields and flowers in May and the winds can be quite benign too.

Come September and October the seas are still like a warm bath.

Sailing Weather In Rhodes

April to mid-June: There is rainfall and the temperatures build steadily from the mid-teens to the mid 20 degrees C range. There are sometimes gentle southerly winds, though these are replaced by ever stronger north to both west Meltemi winds that are rarely hazardous but make for exciting sailing at times.

Late June-August: You'll be unlucky if you see any rain, though it could be welcome in the summer heat.

September-October: The seas remain warm and the Meltemi eases. These months can be the best time of year to sail as the temperatures are often in the comfortable low to mid-20s.

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

Mandraki Marina is the main marina in Rhodes, though there are a number on the north and south coasts of the island where you might enjoy dinner or a night staying over as you wish.

With July and August the peak months, yet it being still warm and comfortable in September, if you can get out when the kids go back to school then you could be in for a treat. The Meltemi isn't so powerful then as well, allowing for an easier sail on your Rhodes yacht charter.

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat hire before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

Location of Rhodes

Rhodes is a Greek island in the Aegean Sea. It lies 18 km from the Cape of Kara near the southwestern coast of Anatolia. It’s the largest member of the Rhodes Islands. It has an area of 1401 km2 and 117 007 residents. Rhodes is the fourth biggest island in Greece after Crete, Evia, and Lesbos.

Can you rent a bareboat yacht in Rhodes – do I need a license?

Small boats (under a certain horsepower or length), electric boats, crewed yacht charters , and gulet charters may not require a license. Larger boats or those with more powerful engines need a skipper’s license. Before you confirm your sailing trip to Rhodes, please send us a copy and we will check it for you. You need to have the original copies with you on-board, so don’t forget to take them. To sail in Rhodes, one of the following qualifications is necessary : • ICC (International Certificate of Competence), with valid Navigational and VHF licenses, Prerequisites: RYA “Day Skipper Course” or complete the ICC Assessment form to prove competence from previous experience.• IPC (International Proficiency Certificate), America, Prerequisites: ASA 104 or US Sailing “Bareboat Cruising Course” OR: • NauticEd SLC (International Sailing License and Credentials), International, • UK – RYA Day Skipper practical, • USA – US Sailing “Bareboat Cruising Course”, ASA “104 Bareboat Cruising Course” or above, • Germany – “Sportbootführerschein See“ or above, • Belgium – Algemeen Stuurbrevet/ Brevet de conduite général, • France – LE PERMIS PLAISANCE If you do not have a skipper license, it is also possible to rent a boat with a skipper

There are two supermarkets and a marketplace in the 20 m deep port, and even a changer, a restaurant, and an ATM. Rhodes Marina

This world-famous marina offers everything that you might need as a sailor. They accommodate 382 boats with a maximum length of 120 metres and a draught of up to 6.5 metres. The marina is particularly well-accessible. Since it is located close to the airport, you can get here quickly on a bus or by taxi. As for services, the marina stands out among all the Greek marinas on the Aegean Sea: they provide boat maintenance, fuel, laundry, water supply as well as many other useful services. There is even free Wi-Fi, which is not at all common in Greek marinas.

Faliraki Harbour

This is a small harbour on the southern side of Faliraki, mostly used by fishermen returning home in the evenings. As it was designed particularly for fishing boats, they only accommodate smaller tourist vessels. sailing in Faliraki

Kolymbia Harbour

Lindos Harbour

The marina of Lindos is located near the southern shores. Similarly to the other resort towns, it accommodates only smaller pleasure boats due to the shallow waters. The southern beach can be found right next to the marina; you can choose from some snack bars and beach bars there. Kos Marina, Kos

The giant marina of the capital of Kos accommodates 250 vessels. Boats with a length of up to 80 metres and a draught of 5 metres can be docked here. The marina, which has its own security guard service, provides you with the opportunity to take care of boat service, fuel your boat replenish your water supplies. There are restaurants, bars and hotels in the near vicinity. The marina even has a Blue Flag certificate, which proves its excellence. a memorable program. Panormittis Marina

This is a smaller marina in one of the southwestern bays of Symi, near Panormittis. Thanks to its location, it is protected well from the Meltemi . They accommodate boats up to 60 metres in length. However, they offer no significant services here. There are restaurants, bars and a mall next to the marina.

Agios Stefanos Marina, Tilos

The main marina of Tilos accommodates boats with a length of up to 60 metres and a draught of 6 metres. We can replenish our water supplies, take care of smaller maintenance tasks and go shopping here.

Palon Marina, Nisyros

This is the larger, eastern marina of Nisyros. They accommodate boats that are up to 60 metres in length and have a draught of up to 4 metres. You can choose from all the main services here, including shopping and access to water. There are several interesting sights to explore near the port, including the Zagoras Museum, which is only a few blocks away.

Limin Kalímnou, Kalymnos

This marina is located in a wonderful environment and is equipped very well. You will find all amenities required for boating: fuel, maintenance and inspection, as well as water supply. If you get hungry, there are several taverns, restaurants and bars to choose from near the port. They accommodate boats with a length of up to 20 metres and a draught of 5 metres. If you have a longer boat, you should go to the marina of Vathi a bit further to the north.

The Rhodes beaches

Rhodes includes numerous spectacular beaches and sandy gulfs. The island has a huge collection of beaches that offer different comfort, water, and sports services. Every beach in Rhodes has crystal clear water and picturesque scenery.

Lindos Limanaki Agios Pavlos beach:

The Agios Pavlos (Saint Paul) is a small gulf that lies 48 km to the south of the city of Rhodes. It’s near to the ancient Acropolis of Lindos. According to a local myth, the gulf got its name after the nice white chapel on the seaside. Gold sand and pebbles cover the beach, where you can rent deck chairs too. This seaside surrounded by rocks offers an excellent site to swim or dive in the clear, turquoise water.

Ladiko is a small beach and a part of a beautiful gulf 20 km to the south of the city of Rhodes. The coast is covered with fine, clean sand and tiny pebbles. Ladiko beach is especially crowded in summer. This gulf looks fascinating from the board of the small boats floating near the shore. The greenery around the beach is also really nice.

Kallithea beach:

The Kallithea beach, 8 km southward from Rhodes city, was famous for its hot thermal waters and baths. The Italians built the one-time baths which are now out of service, unfortunately. This wonderful place has palm trees, pines, and beautiful renewed buildings with amazing mosaic decorations. The emerald sea matches perfectly with this idyllic landscape. Kallithea is easily accessible from the capital of Rhodes.

Rhodes is a very popular European holiday resort. No wonder why, since it provides numerous activities to vacationers. Besides the charming beaches, you can find bars, restaurants and cultural sights here. The old town of Rhodes is a World Heritage Site. History offers hidden treasures to adventurers. The old town has about 200 streets. If you accidentally got lost, it’s not a problem, but but rather an opportunity to explore the city. Which period is best to sail in Rhodes?

The Greek coast has a Mediterranean climate . The air of the country is very clean and dry from spring to early autumn. There’s a lot of sunshine, while the amount of rain usually decreases from the west to the east. In summer, we rarely see any clouds in the sky. Rain is practically an unknown guest in the summer months. The sea can heat up to 23-25 °C from June to August. Even in October, it’s still 23 °C. The area of Greece is constantly windy, these winds, however, are always changing. The wind that dominates the summer months is called Meltemi . From June, it blows from the northwest and the northeast. It reaches its full strength, 5 to 8 on the Beaufort scale, in July and August.

The sea wind comes in late September or early October, which blows from the southeast and the southwest. It’s a specifically southern wind, that dominates mostly in spring and fall with a strength of 2 to 4. Due to Greece’s typical winds, it’s most rewarding to plan a sailing route from the south to the north in spring and autumn, and from the north to the south in summer. The waving is preferable compared to the Croatian archipelago since there’s a greater distance between the Greek islands. The current flows counterclockwise in the Eastern Mediterranean Basin, and northward along the Turkish coast. The water flows southward on the Eastern Greek coasts, but from the west side of the Peloponnese Peninsula, the northern current dominates. The thunderous and amazing history of Rhodes undoubtedly increases the magic of the island and the constant flow of tourists. Interesting historical sights, beautiful golden beaches, pine forests on the edge of the pebbly gulfs, mountains, and wonderful panorama create the unique atmosphere of the island. This magical vibe is what makes Rhodes an ideal destination for an unforgettable vacation.

Yacht Charter Rhodes

Rhodes Town is the capital of Rhodes Island and is situated at the most northern point of the island. One of the finest cities in Greece, it holds that intriguing mix of ancient and modern. The entrance to the harbour at Rhodes Town is where the Colossus of Rhodes, wonder of the ancient world was said to have stood astride the entrance, welcoming ships of old. The new town and old town sit side by side and offer a variety of attractions. The ancient part is a World Heritage listed site and the largest inhabited medieval town in Europe. It is scattered with ancient and historic ruins, temples to Aphrodite, goddess of love, the Street of Knights with its Palace of the Grand Master and other gothic buildings.

The modern part of the city has that cosmopolitan feel, a range of bars, clubs and restaurants, casinos and is buzzing with life in the summer months.

Close to Rhodes Town is the ultra-modern, high-tech Rhodes Marina. Situated in splendid surroundings, it is an excellent base for exploring Rhodes by boat, or stopping off for a rest on a charter holiday.

The Rhodes International Airport is only 20km away from Rhodes Town. There are flights to and from the rest of Greece and many European cities.

Rhodes is the main port of the Dodecanese and domestic and international ferry lines leave and arrive here. Piraeus is the main Greek port connected to Rhodes Town by conventional and high-speed ferries. Other Dodecanese islands are also connected by ferry from here.

International ferries run between Marmaris, Bodrum and Turgutreis in Turkey and Rhodes Town.

For those looking to rent a motor yacht  in Greece, you’ll find a wide range to choose from. 

The most common type of motor yacht you can hire in Greece is a yacht with a planing hull. Stylish, sporty and speedy, they’re great for zipping between islands quickly and ensuring you get the most out of your itinerary. If you’re looking to spend most of your time on land or splashing in the sea, a yacht with a planing hull is the top choice for you. 

You’ll also find a superb selection of displacement and semi-displacement superyachts at your disposal (pictured above). These are typically larger and more stable at anchor, with more onboard space for facilities and amenities such as gyms, movie theaters and wellness suites. They’re ideal if you’re chartering with a large group, particularly one that includes children.

Sailing Yacht Charters in Greece

Greece is a playground for sailing yacht rentals , with plenty of yachts available throughout summer. A combination of light winds, clear skies and plenty of anchorages create great sailing conditions across all the islands.

The most popular destinations for sailing charters are typically Corfu, Kefalonia , and the Sporades Islands . Other destinations are equally desirable, including the Cyclades and the Dodecanese islands - but be aware that these areas typically encounter more winds. This means it might be more challenging to drop anchor, and you will have to consider spending more nights in port.

Gulet Yacht Charters in Greece

A gulet is a traditionally Turkish-built sailing yacht made out of wood. They are usually two or three-masted and are typically much larger than your average sailing yacht.   Luxury gulet yacht charters  in Greece are very appealing alternatives to both sailing and motor yacht charter. While they usually rely on their motor underway, they are very fuel-efficient and don't require a lot of fuel to get from point A to point B. They have displacement hulls which make them very stable and seaworthy, and typically offer lots of volume and open-plan living spaces.

Greek gulet yachts also tend to be cheaper than other types of charter as they sometimes offer all-inclusive or semi-inclusive packages, meaning you don’t need to worry about additional expenses such as food and drink. They also normally include a standard number of cruising hours per day.  Plus, their crew are often local to the region that they cruise in, meaning they can double as tour guides and have a lot of expertise and valuable insight into the area.

But be aware- many gulets are Turkish-flagged, meaning they will need to hold a Greek charter license to start or finish a charter in Greece. 

How Much Does it Cost to Charter a Yacht in Greece?

The price of a Greece yacht charter vacation varies depending on a number of factors, including the type of yacht, the age of the yacht, and the month in which you choose to charter. 

• A Greece motor yacht rental can range from $33,000 to $1.8m per week plus expenses
• A sailing yacht charter in Greece averages from $27,200 to $559k weekly plus expenses

In Greece, VAT on a yacht charter is charged at 24% and is based on the value of the yacht. However, this figure can be reduced if the yacht meets specific criteria. 

The three tax brackets are as follows; 

• VAT at full 24%: applies to charters that take place in Greek waters without exiting to non-EU or International waters (Staying within the six nautical miles limit)
• VAT at 24%: with a deduction option for time spent outside of EU waters or in international waters. 
• Discounted at 50% (VAT 12%):for yachts that spend a minimum of 60 % of charter time/days outside of territorial waters. (Territorial waters are considered: six nautical miles from the mainland and six nautical miles from the territorial waters of an island). This also applies to yachts charters commencing outside EU territory and that remain outside for more than 60% of the chartered days and end their charter in Greece.

When is the Best Time for Greek Yacht Charters?

The best time for Greek yacht rentals is between July and August, but warm weather typically extends well into September and even May in certain destinations. The peak of the charter season is usually July, although August historically has the hottest temperatures. 

Between June and August, you can expect highs of 85 - 90 degrees Fahrenheit (26 - 32 degrees Celsius) in Athens, with even hotter temperatures recorded further south.

Where Should I Begin My Greece Yacht Charter?

By far the most common embarkation point for a  Greece yacht rental vacation is Athens . Around 90% of the Greek charter fleet has a homeport in Athens, and there are numerous luxury marinas that cater to superyachts.

However, for those looking to charter around the Ionian Islands in destinations like Corfu , Cephalonia and Zakynthos , you may wish to begin your charter closer to your desired destination. 

It is possible to begin or end your charter elsewhere in Greece. However, you may have to consider the cost of repositioning as the fleet is mostly based out of Athens. 

If you want to meet the yacht elsewhere – for example, Santorini, Mykonos –  you can expect to pay a hefty repositioning fee. It’s generally more economical to begin your Greek yacht charter in Athens and spend the day cruising to your desired start point, enjoying your yacht to the fullest, and soaking up the scenery as you travel underway.

Where to Find a Yacht Slip in Greece

Around the main yachting hubs of Greece, you’ll find plenty of marinas that cater to a variety of yachts of different sizes. However, be aware that Greece doesn’t have as many big marinas as destinations such as the South of France or Italy , and demand for slips can be very high in peak season.

Greece is one of the most popular charter destinations in the Mediterranean. Therefore, advanced booking (three to six months ahead) is absolutely essential in order to secure your dream yacht on your preferred dates in the perfect destination. 

When it comes to Greece yacht rentals, many charterers are repeat clients; meaning they’ve already booked the yacht once, fallen in love with the yacht and its crew, and chosen to return again to explore a new destination. This means that competition for yachts is fierce and it’s even more crucial to kickstart the booking process early. 

Don’t forget that your choice of yachts in Greece is comparatively smaller than Italy or the South of France since all yachts beginning or ending a charter yacht in Greece must have a Greek charter license.

Most itineraries for yachts around Greece begin in Athens because around 90% of the charter fleet in Greece has a homeport in Athens. Therefore, the yachts are usually based in the country’s capital, and you will most likely have to pay a repositioning fee if you’d like to begin elsewhere in Greece.

A Greek yacht charter license is a special permit that allows yachts to begin and end a yacht charter in Greece. Not all yachts hold a Greek charter license, so you will need to speak to your charter broker for more information about starting and finishing a charter in Greek waters.

You could start a yacht charter in Mykonos, but you will most likely have to pay a hefty repositioning fee as most yachts have their homeport in Athens. To get the most out of your yacht charter, it’s usually best to begin in Athens and spend the night underway to reach Mykonos.

The most popular destinations for sailing vacations in Greece are the Ionian Islands. However, great sailing conditions exist across the country, and other popular hotspots include the Dodecanese Islands, the Sporades Islands and the Saronic Islands. 

The standard Value Added Tax (VAT) is 24%, and it is calculated based on the value of the yacht. The VAT can be reduced in certain circumstances; read our guide above.

The Cyclades Islands of Santorini, Mykonos, Paros and Naxos are great for exploring on a luxury yacht charter during summer. The best times to visit are between June and September when you can expect long days and warm sea temperatures. The beach clubs of Mykonos will be in full swing, and the island of Santorini will be alive with activity.
