Dos and Donts of The Yacht Week Thailand

If this is the first time you’ve heard of The Yacht Week, let’s just say it’s an incredible mashup of partying and sightseeing while exploring the seas on a bona fide yacht. The Yacht Week originated in Croatia but has blown up to include tours around Turkey, Italy, the British Virgin Islands, Greece, and yes, Thailand.

Since we have never been to The Yacht Week before and had conjured up certain images and expectations of the trip as we excitedly packed our bags, we’d thought we give a bit of insight to the event for others who are itching to go. Even though we’d love to go into the nitty gritty of preparing for The Yacht Week, “how to” guides have been done here , here , and here so we’ll be providing a different twist on the trip:

Do Go for Amazing Views

Happy Hour. We were disappointed when we noticed the #sunset was being blocked by a nasty grey sky of rain clouds. A few b̶e̶e̶r̶s̶ minutes later this happens. Glad we stuck it out. @TheYachtWeek #TYWThailand #Thailand A photo posted by Chris and Angela Scott (@tielandtothailand) on Jan 6, 2016 at 6:47pm PST

We saw some absolutely fabulous rock formations, beaches, and sunsets as we sailed around a dozen or so beaches and islands on our route in the Andaman Sea. And of course, the sailboats themselves were a beautiful sight along the horizon, particularly during the regatta and when they formed the famous yacht ring.

As we bounced from place to place we also stopped for an hour or two at small islands with famous sites like Maya Bay Beach (early in the morning before the crowds got there!) and the Emerald Cave. Other boats went to Hong Island, James Bond Island, and Tup Island .

Don’t Go for the Sailing

The Yacht Week Thailand Regatta

Ironically this trip is more about sightseeing and having fun and less about the demands of skillfully sailing a yacht in the open seas . In fact, during our trip, the skipper only raised the sails and cut the engines once and that was only for about an hour – and a wonderfully peaceful hour it was! Looking back on it, there just wasn’t adequate wind power to meet the demands of our rigorous island hopping schedule. We did raise the sails again for the regatta but we cheated a bit and used the engines.

If you are a sailing fanatic and want more sail time, it might be better to be the captain of your own boat so that you can make executive decisions and choose when you want to sail. However, agreeing to this is a huge responsibility and means less partying! Bottom line: chances are you won’t be able to indulge in your sailing hobby as much as you’d like on this trip.

Do Go for the Outrageous Parties!

White Party at The Yacht Week Thailand

From the moment we woke up to the time we stumble to bed, we were celebrating in one form or another. Cocktails before noon? Yep. Inflatable floaty parties and island hopping during the day? Definitely. And every evening we could expect to either go to beachside clubs or some sort of themed party.

It is exhausting but exhilarating.  We recommend getting plenty of sleep during the week leading up to the trip because you’ll be lucky to get more than a few hours of rest at night!

Don’t Go for the Excursions

Side trip to Maya Bay Beach during The Yacht Week Thailand

Although we did a lot of island hopping during The Yacht Week Thailand, it was difficult to find the time for big daytime excursions when we stopped at the larger islands.

We had made a list of things to do on the islands. It included going to an overlook on Koh Phi Phi, walking a dog at the Lanta Animal Welfare on Koh Lanta , and going rock climbing on Railay . Unfortunately, by the time we arranged for boat-to-shore transportation, we only had about an hour or two on the island. These side trips were just too time-consuming to fit into our schedule. However, we did have enough time to do a little shopping, get a massage, and enjoy a freshly brewed espresso (a nice change from the instant coffee we were consuming on the yacht!)

Do Go to Relax

Relaxing with The Yacht Week Thailand

Even with all the partying, there is plenty of opportunities to relax. This is especially true once brunch cocktails are finished and before afternoon cocktails begin. We’d either stretch ourselves out on the bow’s deck to sunbathe or lounge in a water floaty. It’s time to play some summer tunes and enjoy the gentle waves and gorgeous views. We loved that there was no obligation to do anything on this trip if we didn’t want to!

Don’t Go to be Pampered

Cocktails at The Yacht Week Thailand

Although the boats are impressive, there are multiple champagne parties, and it’s possible to hire a hostess and skipper to cook and sail for you during the trip, this is not a five-star cruise . Heads are small (bathrooms for you non-sailin’ folk) and you may even have to manually pump the toilets. Cabins and galleys can get cluttery in the blink of an eye, there is a limited supply of utility water on board, and seasickness may be biting at your heels. Everyone needs to work as a team to keep the yacht clean, safe, and fun. This might mean taking out trash and scrubbing toilets from time to time.

Do Go for the People

Happy skippers on The Yacht Week Thailand

Ah, the people! The Yacht Week Thailand hosts 16 yachts of nearly 180 twenty and thirty-somethings from around the world. Our boat had guys and gals from Sweden, America, and Israel. Our friend’s yacht had people from the UK, Australia, Argentina, and Istanbul. We boarded with eight unfamiliar yet smiling faces looking at us and by the end of the trip, we were like old friends. Once the event is over, it’s not uncommon for people to stay in touch and long-term friendship and romantic relationships have come from it.

Don’t Go If You’re Looking for a Romantic Getaway

Yep. We live in a big beautiful world, and for as much as we travel around Thailand we always find places we never knew existed. All the more reason to stick around and continue exploring a whole lot longer… @TheYachtWeek #TYWThailand #PhiPhi A photo posted by Chris and Angela Scott (@tielandtothailand) on Jan 6, 2016 at 4:15am PST

We firmly encourage fun, sociable singles and couples to go on The Yacht Week Thailand and party it up together. However, if you come with a significant other in hopes of a romantic getaway, this event is not for you. Although the boats are big they aren’t that big. The rooms are even smaller, so there’s very little privacy away from other members of your crew. Two, this is a social event that’s all about mingling and having fun with many people It’s not meant for staring into each other’s eyes 24/7.

Packing Essentials for The Yacht Week Thailand

Pierside during The Yacht Week Thailand

Bring essentials like daytime cover-ups, slip-on boat shoes, hair clips or bands to keep long tresses out of your face, and several pairs of sunglasses. Definitely err on the dressier, more stylish side for evening wear, so guys should bring a handful of collared polos and board shorts and gals should opt for sundresses. Fun extras include a costume for the regatta, all white attire for the White Party, and water floaties!

But absolute must haves ? Check it out:

3+ bathing suits:  Or four. Or even five. They are essentially your outfits for the day and double as underwear. For real. Just make sure you bring real undies to wear with your evening outfits. Bringing multiple bathing suits will allow you to rotate them out, giving adequate time between washing and air drying, and break up those tan lines.

Battery pack: Electrical outlets are very limited on the boat and there’s a small chance that the one in your room doesn’t work or your plugs don’t fit. You’ll be SOL the ENTIRE week. We brought an Eloop E14 20,000 Mah Power Bank  (it’s a beast!) but we were able to repeatedly charge our phones (and even share juice with our crew) and it lasted the entire week. Also, bring a cigarette plug adapter with multiple USB ports (needed for phones and cameras). Backup batteries to any equipment (camera, GoPro, etc) are also a must!

Fully charged cordless electric razor:  Men and women both, trust us on this one. Fully charged. Cordless. Trying shaving your legs, face, and other areas when the boat is rocking in an itsy bitsy bathroom with only cold water. It’s a challenge! This is a life saver since everyone’s nearly nude the entire week.

Waterproof bag/phone case: Absolutely bring a waterproof case for your electronics. If you are taking a camera, investing in a waterproof bag (dry bag) is also essential the island transfers are done by longtail boat and dinghy. If you have a phone, invest in a waterproof case or an underwater bag. You don’t want to accidentally drop your electronics in the sea as you get on and off the boats! If you do, follow these  tips for saving electronics from salt water   (these tips are NOT the same if you drop it in fresh water)!

Dry shampoo and baby wipes: Unless you actually wash your hair in the sea, chances are you won’t be taking more than a sponge bath on the boat for the entire week. Dry shampoo (or even baby powder) keeps your roots dry. It can also double as body powder to keep sticky, sweaty skin at bay. Baby wipes keep your important bits fresh and clean when a shower is not a realistic option.

Your country’s flag: Not only does it show national pride but it’s the perfect way to identify your boat among the dozens among the fleet. Yachts look surprisingly similar  identical during the nighttime, especially after you’ve had a few drinks. Going around in circles in a boat transfer at 3am is a buzzkill and frustrations can escalate quickly.

Don’t Bother Packing

Here are a few things that are better left at home during the trip:

Big electronics: Don’t bring a laptop or any electronics other than a phone and small camera. You won’t get any work done anyways.   Plus, it’s hard to maintain a full battery when the yacht doesn’t have electricity during the day and unreliable electrical hookups at night.

Heels, sneakers, boots: Slip-ons and flip-flops are the way to go. You will break your neck if you wear heels. Forget wedges, too.

A hard suitcase: A soft duffle bag or suitcase is a MUST. Hard cases, even the small ones, WILL NOT FIT in the cabin’s unconventionally shaped storage areas. Make sure to keep it carry-on sized only. If you have to check your bag, you’ve packed too much and it’s going to be too big!

The Yacht Week Thailand isn’t a year-round event. Instead, it’s currently scheduled for three one-week sessions in December and in the beginning of January dubbed Week 51, Week 52, and Week 53. This aligns with the winter holidays and New Years, so don’t forget to bring Christmas and New Years costumes!

DISCLOSURE: We were guests of this event but our opinions of The Yacht Week Thailand are our own.

Great write up – really enjoyed reading it and sharing it on my Twitter account Thanks

Sounds like a lot of fun. How much does it cost?

Cabin bookings are €1,400 per person and cover the cost of two meals per day, water, skipper, hostess, and yacht fees (like gas); alcohol, airfare, and meals off the yacht are excluded. Yacht bookings are around €800 per person but all other expenses are paid for by you.

Chris and Angela, Love the fact you are covering more beach/boat/island activities in your newsletter. Keep them coming

Thanks! We know the beach lover in you has been waiting for information like this :)

Oh this look soooo amazing! I’m in Koh Lanta now and just staring out at sailboats that go by makes me super jealous! I’d love to do the Yacht Week in Thailand or Croatia. Great photos!

We hear The Yacht Week Croatia is out of this world! We got our best sunset time lapse video on the shores of Koh Lanta during The Yacht Week. If you haven’t already, check out our Things to Do on Koh Lanta post. PS, Hope you enjoyed watching the Super Bowl during the wee morning hours. So different watching the game and drinking coffee, huh?

The Yacht Week Thailand: Charting the Route

D ecember 2013 saw the launch of The Yacht Week’s (TYW) introductory route through the southwest islands of Thailand. A leader in week-long yacht charters since 2006, The Yacht Week has become somewhat of an institution among young adventure seekers. I was lucky enough to be invited along for the ride and I’m still spinning out.

Uncharted territory for TYW, the West Coast of Thailand is home to some 39 main islands and a hundred or so smaller ones dotted about the region. Our itinerary unearthed a raft of epic sailing through unspoiled natural beauty. With a fleet of 13 yachts and a crew of 120 TYW alumni from around the world, there was no messing around.

Bookings for TYW Thailand 2014 route open April 1, 2014. To give you a teaser of what’s in store, here are some highlights from our week.

The TYW DJ for Thailand, Todd Van Berkel (TVB) from Melbourne, Australia, put together a sick playlist for us, the top tunes of which are featured here. Listen along as you view the rest of this post.

TYW Skippers come together for the first trip briefing.

Ao Po Grand Marina was our port of departure. This once quiet spot on the island of Phuket is shaping up to rival the first-class international marinas of the West Coast. Located in Phang Nga Bay, where dramatic limestone karsts jut vertically out of the ocean, the marina is attracting hordes of super yachts and sailing yachts alike.

This was there we met Philip, our local skipper. He pulled out regional maps and tide charts and laid down the law about the route. Skippers, crew, and the media team crisscrossed with luggage and camera equipment. Our briefing was interrupted by a TWY alumni:

“Are you guys ready for this!!!?” Rocking a t-shirt with a map of Thailand, his enthusiastic smile was welcomed with familiar high fives. “This is going to be next level!”

I took a deep breath — was I ready for this?

From Ao Po, we sailed northeast towards Koh Roi and anchored off the bay. As soon as the anchor tugged the ocean floor, crew rushed to the top deck, sprinted off the edge, and plummeted into the water! It was GoPro central — a perfect opportunity to get sick footage and explore some local caves. From Koh Roi, we headed out to the night anchorage, south to Ko Yao Noi and the Paradise Resort.

On day 3 we arrived at Railay Beach, one of the locations where Hangover 2 was filmed — which seemed a tad ironic that day. The skippers banded together and executed some impressive maneuvers, harnessing our fleet together in the bay. The long boat was the place to be! Todd spun some wicked tunes and it was, hands down, one the best parties I have ever been to.

With an insane backdrop of BASE jumpers and paragliders, like pirates the crew drove into the crystal waters, swimming to their neighbors to demolish their supply of vodka and rum.

From Railay, we turned southwest towards Chicken Island and our night destination of Koh Lanta.

On Koh Lanta, we saw women walking down the dirt roads, barefoot, with over-stuffed rice bags on their heads. Children, maybe as young as 11, driving mopeds, with boxes of fruit precariously balanced on their foot-wide floorboards. Lanta is pretty much the opposite of the hectic woofer-thump of Phuket and the frenetic hustle of big cities like Bangkok.

Lanta

Next, we left the peaceful pace of Lanta and headed towards the well-developed party island of Koh Phi Phi Don. This island was among the most devastated areas following the 2004 tsunami, but years later you wouldn’t know it. TYW crews escaped the crowds, tucking into the hidden bays and pristine beaches of Phi Phi Don’s smaller cousin, Koh Phi Phi Lee, a protected island that lies a mile to the south. That all said, at night we made full use of the big island’s party life.

After two days on Koh Phi Phi, we made a dash to Maya Bay on Phi Phi Lee, getting a last fix of paradise before our long sail back to Ao Po Grand Marina in Phuket. The last day on the water was one of the best days of my life. Like a family, we maneuvered into a flying-V formation, sailing northwest from Koh Phi Phi towards Khai Nui.

Fresh coconuts and cocktails on Khai Nui.

Khai Nui is a privately owned island on the east coast of Phuket. The miniscule, almost deserted rock is home to a shipwrecked beach bar called Chokdee Restaurant & Bar. I took some time out and sat at the back of the bar, watching the pick ‘n’ mix of bikini and swimming togg clad international crew pop champagne corks and sip on a rainbow of cocktails.

A hand reached over my shoulder, and a Spanish crew member grabbed me and pulled me into his arms. Laughing, he shouted, “This is the best week of my life. If you can’t have fun here, you can’t have fun anywhere.”

The day was slipping away from us, but we held on strong and launched into our last leg back to base camp. And as the curtain fell on TYW Thailand, the crews called for an encore. Whispers crept through the fleet, “Should we change our flights? I’m not ready to leave this place, who’s in?”

The TYW Thailand closing party was held at XANA Beach Club, a venue where the Black Eyed Peas had rocked out the previous week. With its stunning beachfront location, 35-meter pool, state-of-the-art sound system, and epic cocktail and food menu, we had an absolute blast.

People with raised glasses

TYW closing party. Cheers to a legendary week!

I am a massive believer that you carve your own destiny. But that week (with a little help from TYW), destiny dealt me a bloody good hand. There’s no doubt that Thailand is going to be a top destination for The Yacht Week in 2014.

Types of Yachts Available

The Yacht Week offers a variety of yacht options to suit different preferences and group sizes. Each yacht provides a comfortable and luxurious setting for your sailing adventure. Here are some of the types of yachts available:

  • Monohull Yacht: The monohull yacht is a classic choice and offers a more traditional sailing experience. These yachts have a single hull and come in various sizes, accommodating different group sizes. They provide stability and performance while sailing, and often feature comfortable cabins, spacious decks, and modern amenities.
  • Catamaran: Catamarans are gaining popularity among Yacht Week participants due to their spaciousness and stability. These yachts have two hulls connected by a spacious deck, providing ample space for socializing, sunbathing, and enjoying the stunning views. Catamarans often come equipped with multiple cabins, ensuite bathrooms, and a fully equipped kitchen.
  • Gulet: If you’re looking for a larger and more luxurious option, a gulet might be the perfect choice. These traditional wooden sailing vessels offer a unique blend of traditional charm and modern comfort. Gulets typically have several cabins with ensuite bathrooms, a spacious deck area, and even amenities like jacuzzis and entertainment systems.
  • Motor Yacht: For those who prioritize speed and luxury, a motor yacht is a fantastic choice. These yachts are equipped with powerful engines, providing the ability to cover larger distances in shorter amounts of time. Motor yachts often feature spacious deck areas, luxurious cabins, and top-of-the-line amenities.
  • Bareboat or Skippered: You have the option to choose between bareboat or skippered yachts. Bareboat yachts are self-skippered, giving you the freedom to navigate the waters independently if you have the necessary sailing experience. Skippered yachts come with a professional skipper who will handle the navigation, allowing you to sit back, relax, and enjoy the journey.

Regardless of the type of yacht you choose, you can expect a comfortable and stylish onboard experience. Yachts are equipped with all the necessary amenities to make your journey enjoyable, including fully equipped kitchens, comfortable sleeping quarters, bathrooms, and spacious deck areas for lounging and taking in the views.

It’s important to consider the size of your group and your desired level of luxury when selecting a yacht. Whether you opt for the classic charm of a monohull, the spaciousness of a catamaran, or the luxury of a gulet or motor yacht, you can rest assured that your Yacht Week experience will be nothing short of extraordinary.

What to Pack for The Yacht Week

Packing for The Yacht Week requires careful consideration of the essentials to ensure you have a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Here’s a list of items to include in your packing list:

  • Clothing: Pack a mix of swimwear, casual clothes, and evening attire. Opt for lightweight and breathable fabrics to stay comfortable in warm weather. Don’t forget to include a cover-up or sarong for beach visits and a light jacket or sweater for cooler evenings.
  • Footwear: Bring a combination of comfortable walking shoes, sandals, and flip flops for beach outings. It’s also a good idea to pack a pair of boat shoes or non-marking deck shoes that provide good grip and won’t damage the yacht’s deck.
  • Protection from the Sun: Don’t forget to pack sunscreen with a high SPF, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun’s rays. A rash guard or long-sleeve top can provide extra protection for water activities.
  • Travel Documents: Ensure you have all necessary travel documents, including a valid passport, visas (if required), yacht week booking confirmation, and any necessary insurance documents. Keep them in a waterproof bag or document holder to keep them safe and dry.
  • Personal Essentials: Pack toiletries, medications, and personal care items such as a toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, and any prescription medications you may need. It’s also a good idea to bring a small first aid kit with essentials like band-aids, painkillers, and motion sickness medication.
  • Waterproof Bag: Bring a waterproof bag or dry bag to protect your electronics, valuables, and any items you want to keep dry during water activities or in case of rain.
  • Towels and Linens: While yachts provide basic linens and towels, it’s a good idea to bring a lightweight towel for beach visits or as a backup. A sarong or large scarf can also serve as a multifunctional item.
  • Entertainment and Gadgets: Consider bringing a portable Bluetooth speaker, e-reader, or a deck of cards to keep yourself entertained during downtime. Don’t forget to pack chargers for your electronic devices and a power bank to keep them charged.
  • Cash and Card: Bring a mix of cash and cards for expenses, including meals, drinks, and any additional activities or excursions you wish to partake in. It’s also a good idea to inform your bank of your travel plans to avoid any issues with your cards.
  • Reusable Water Bottle: Stay hydrated during your Yacht Week adventure by bringing a reusable water bottle. Fill it up whenever you have the chance to ensure you have access to drinking water throughout the trip.

Remember to pack sensibly and consider the limited storage space on a yacht. Pack light and bring versatile items that can be mixed and matched to create different outfits. It’s all about finding the balance between practicality and style.

Lastly, don’t forget to pack a sense of adventure and an open mind. The Yacht Week is all about immersing yourself in the experience, connecting with new people, and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Food and Beverage Options

When it comes to food and beverages during The Yacht Week, you have several options to ensure you and your crew are well-fed and hydrated throughout the journey. Here’s a breakdown of the available choices:

Provisioning: One option is to take advantage of the provisioning services provided by The Yacht Week. This allows you to pre-order your groceries and have them delivered to your yacht before you embark on your journey. You can select from a variety of food and beverage items ranging from fresh produce and dairy products to snacks, drinks, and alcoholic beverages. This convenient option saves you time and effort, ensuring you have everything you need on board.

Local Cuisine: Exploring the local cuisine is an integral part of any travel experience, and The Yacht Week is no exception. During your journey, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to sample the local delicacies at restaurants, beach clubs, and cafes on the islands you visit. Indulge in traditional dishes, fresh seafood, and regional specialties to truly immerse yourself in the culinary culture of your destination.

Onboard Cooking: If you enjoy cooking and want to take charge of your meals, you can utilize the kitchen facilities on board your yacht. Stock up on provisions from local markets or the provisioning service, and get creative with your culinary skills. Prepare delicious meals as a crew and dine on the deck overlooking the stunning views of the sea.

Restaurants and Tavernas: When you want to take a break from cooking, you can explore the local restaurants and tavernas on the islands you visit. Each destination offers a range of dining options, from casual beachside eateries to upscale restaurants. Enjoy a variety of international cuisine, fresh seafood, and local specialties while soaking up the atmosphere of each unique location.

Drinks and Cocktails: Keep yourself refreshed with a variety of drinks and cocktails during The Yacht Week. Stock up on your favorite beverages from the local stores or the provisioning service. You can also visit beach clubs and bars for a wide selection of drinks and signature cocktails that will enhance your party experience.

It’s important to note that while alcoholic beverages are a popular choice during The Yacht Week, responsible drinking is paramount. Ensure you consume alcohol in moderation and always prioritize your safety and that of your crew.

Ultimately, the choice of food and beverages on The Yacht Week is flexible and depends on your preferences and budget. Whether you opt for provisioning, onboard cooking, or exploring local cuisine, there are options to cater to every taste.

As always, remember to stay hydrated and nourished to make the most of your Yacht Week adventure. And don’t forget to savor the flavors and culinary experiences that each destination has to offer.

Island Hopping: Each destination during The Yacht Week offers unique islands and coastal spots to explore. Hop off your yacht and venture into hidden coves, secluded beaches, and picturesque villages. Swim in secluded bays, hike through scenic trails, or simply relax and soak up the sun on pristine beaches.

Relaxation and Wellness: Take advantage of the tranquil setting of the open water and treat yourself to moments of relaxation and wellness. No matter how you choose to spend your time during The Yacht Week, there are endless opportunities for adventure, fun, and relaxation. Embrace the activities and entertainment on offer, and make the most of your Yacht Week experience.

Safety and Guidelines

Safety is of utmost importance during your Yacht Week adventure. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or a novice, it’s essential to adhere to certain guidelines and precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Here are some important safety considerations and guidelines to keep in mind:

Listen to Your Skipper: If you have a skipper onboard, take their guidance seriously. They have the knowledge and experience to navigate the waters safely and handle any unforeseen situations that may arise. Trust their expertise and follow their instructions regarding sailing, anchoring, and safety protocols.

Be Weather Alert: Keep an eye on the weather forecast and stay informed about any potential changes in weather conditions. Your skipper will also be monitoring the weather, but it’s always good to stay aware. If there are adverse weather conditions, follow the guidance of your skipper and adhere to any safety measures advised.

Be Mindful of Security: While The Yacht Week is generally safe, it’s important to exercise caution and be mindful of your surroundings. Keep your valuables secure, lock the yacht when you’re away, and don’t leave personal belongings unattended, especially in public areas.

Practice Safe Swimming: When swimming or participating in water activities, always take safety precautions. Make sure you’re a confident swimmer and be aware of currents, tides, and other potential hazards. Use proper safety equipment, such as life jackets, when necessary.

Drink Responsibly: Alcoholic beverages are often a part of the Yacht Week experience, but it’s important to consume them responsibly. Know your limits and be mindful of the impact alcohol can have on your judgment and abilities, particularly when engaging in water activities or operating watercraft.

Stay Hydrated: With the sun, sea, and potential partying, it’s easy to forget to stay hydrated. Remember to drink plenty of water throughout your Yacht Week adventure to prevent dehydration. This is especially important when spending time in the sun or participating in physical activities.

Respect the Environment: The Yacht Week takes place in beautiful natural environments, so it’s crucial to respect and protect them. Avoid littering and dispose of waste properly. Be mindful of marine life and coral reefs when snorkeling or engaging in water activities.

Emergency Contacts and Communication: Familiarize yourself with emergency contacts and protocols in the area you’re visiting. Ensure you have a reliable means of communication on board, such as a fully charged mobile phone, a VHF radio, or other equipment recommended by your skipper or yacht charter company.

Know Your Limits: While The Yacht Week is an exciting and adventurous experience, it’s essential to know your personal limits. Be honest about your swimming abilities, sailing skills, and comfort levels. If you’re unsure about any activity or feel uncomfortable, communicate it to your skipper or fellow crew members.

Travel Insurance: It’s highly recommended to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers sailing and water activities. Ensure your insurance policy includes medical coverage, trip cancellation, and personal liability for peace of mind throughout your Yacht Week journey.

By following these safety guidelines and remaining vigilant, you can enjoy a safe and unforgettable Yacht Week experience. Prioritize your well-being and the safety of your crew, and make the most out of this incredible adventure.

The Yacht Week offers an extraordinary blend of adventure, luxury, and socializing that creates an unforgettable holiday experience. Sailing through breathtaking destinations, exploring hidden gems, and indulging in vibrant parties and events are just the beginning of this remarkable journey.

The Official Guide to All 6 Yacht Weeks

Published on 1/15/2016 at 10:32 AM

yacht week thailand

Perhaps you’ve heard about this thing called The Yacht Week, an exclusive seven-day, spring break-like flotilla for kind-of grownups that involves sailboats, exotic locales, and hard-partying young people from around the world. Days are spent drinking onboard chartered boats while nights are spent drinking in clubs you’ve only seen on Wild On! Somewhere in between people sleep and probably quote that Andy Samberg & T-Pain song waaaay too much.

But how can you  get in on the action and live like a billionaire playboy for the week? For less than $2,000. And where, exactly, is all this partying going on? To sort it out, we talked to Kiersten Rich -- aka,  The Blonde Abroad -- a travel blogger and one of  our favorite Instagrammers on the planet . She’s been to Yacht Week a time or five, and broke it all down for us. Here are her insider tips for all six routes.

So, what is The Yacht Week?

Yacht Week is not like Fashion Week or Music Week, where you just show up and party. It’s a private trip full of private parties that you buy your way into. Old and new money are accepted.

Actually, The Yacht Week isn't just one trip but a series of flotillas throughout the year organized by European Travel Ventures. You join the fun by either rounding up your friends and chartering a boat or, if you're flying solo, reserving a cabin on an existing yacht using their handy website . The number of boats on each route is limited, so in either case, you should book early.

Also, there’s the catch: The Yacht Week regulates the guy/girl ratio on every trip, aiming for an even 50/50 mix. So when you book, you'll see a percentage next to the boat you're trying to reserve; this is the minimum percentage of female patrons that must be in your party to set sail. It’s kinda like going to a high-end club, except instead of getting seven hours of pounding techno music, you get seven days of it.

Once onboard/on location, participants receive a weeklong schedule of events planned by TYW that includes everything from exclusive parties, to snorkeling adventures, to day trips around nearby islands; again, it all depends on the itinerary. And again, ONLY people from the organized Yacht Week itineraries can attend those crazy parties you keep watching on YouTube. Participants are easily identified by their brightly colored wristbands that scream, “Yes! I’m one of the cool kids!”

The exact routes aren’t planned until a few weeks before the trip, so you’re kind of flying blind when you book. But nobody (to our knowledge) has ever come back and called it “the worst week of my life.” So, you can probably trust in The Yacht Week's planning skills.

Where is The Yacht Week?

There are six locations where The Yacht Week operates: Greece, Croatia, Turkey, Italy, Thailand, and the British Virgin Islands (BVI). As mentioned, each route runs during a specific time of year (although there is some overlap), typically summer in Europe, winter in Thailand, and winter/spring in BVI.

Here's the thing though, despite the name, it’s not just ONE set week. In fact, participants typically have six or seven weeks to choose from throughout the season for EACH destination. This summer, there are actually 13 weeks for the Croatia route.

How much does it cost?

Again, that depends on the itinerary, how many people are in your group, and what kind of boat you charter. It can range from about $600-$1,000 a person, not including food, plane tickets, or transfers from the nearest airport to the marina. The rate also doesn’t include fuel or port fees for your boat (which can range from $25-$100 per night) or the cost of a skipper/hostess should you not know how to sail the damn thing and/or want to make your own sandwiches.

And speaking of skippers and hostesses?

Most people on The Yacht Week can’t sail. And even for the people who do know how, the amount of partying involved typically doesn’t lend itself to a long day at the helm. So participants often hire a skipper who will both lovingly refer to you as “Lil Buddy” and drive your rig. He'll also teach you how to sail if you want to actually learn something during your week of debauchery. But no pressure.   For a mixed or all-female boat, the skipper will cost you between $800-$1,200, depending on your route and exchange rate. For an all-male group, it runs between $1,300-$1,800.

You can also hire a hostess for the week to do all the cooking and cleaning, and have meals (and drinks) ready when you return to the boat after a hard day of partying. This will set you back an additional $750-$1,000, plus the cost of food (all of which, she'll buy).

What do I do all day?

A typical day, as described on the company’s website, is as follows:

9-11am: Wake up and eat breakfast on the boat. 10am-12pm: Set sail. 12-2pm: Lunch stop in a nice natural bay. The yacht will stay at anchor for one-two hours while you swim, eat lunch, and relax. 2-4pm: Sail to the next port. Enjoy some sun on deck. 4-6pm: Arrive at port. If you get there early, you can score a slip and walk ashore. If you arrive late, you're likely grabbing a mooring in the harbor and will take the dinghy to the dock. 6-8pm: Dinner at a restaurant in town. 8-11pm: Drinks, socializing, and parties on the boats. 10pm-12am: Head to the evening's designated Yacht Week party. 2-4am: Bed time!

When: June 4th-September 3rd Where:  After departing from a marina near Split, you’ll sail to Rogac, Milna, Bol, Hvar, Scedro, Vis (including both the Green AND Blue Caves) Komiza, and Korcula. Don’t miss: The Party in a Castle at Ft. George

The most famous of all the yacht weeks, this is probably the one you saw in the video and were like, "We've GOT to do this." It's the biggest party of them all and attracts up to 50 boats per itinerary. It's so big now that they actually operate in two different directions to accommodate the crowds. This is THE yacht week to go on if you want to rage, and while it’s not all that much of a cultural or learning experience, it’s definitely the route to take if you want stories your friends back home won’t believe.

When: July 23rd - August 6th Where: Starting in Sicily, you’ll sail to Vulcano, Lipari, Salina, Panarea, and Stromboli. Don’t miss: The trek up an active volcano in Stromboli (lava flow permitting)

Unlike Croatia, this is the best route if you want to learn a lot about the country you’re visiting. The itinerary sails through the islands around Sicily that you typically wouldn’t see on vacation, and it affords you the opportunity to climb up the aforementioned volcano. The daytime exploring here displaces a lot of the daytime parties, but if you’re hellbent on getting your afternoon drink on , there are plenty of other boats around to party with. The route is a little smaller -- typically 15-25 boats -- and the dining and nightlife can get expensive.

When: July 9th - September 3rd Where: Starting in Lavrio or Alimos (depending on your route), you'll sail to Kea, Poros, Ermioni, Dhokos, Hydra, Spetses, and Plaka. Don’t miss: The White Party on Ermioni Island

This route through the Greek Islands is far and away the most organized, offering the most regimented schedule/number of official parties; although you’re free to skip any of the soirees if you want to check out the islands on your own. The sailing days here are the longest (some up to six hours) and many of those are spent motoring rather than sailing, which mean fuel costs can add up. The size of the flotilla is small (approximately 12 boats) but the parties on the Greek Islands are some of the best you’ll hit.

British Virgin Islands

When: December 27 - January 10th, March 5th - 26th, May 28th - June 18th Where: Starting in Road Town, Tortola, boats sail to Jost Van Dyke, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, Norman Island, and Peter Island. Don’t miss: The Baths, one of the Caribbean’s best beaches , is an entire landscape of giant, volcanically formed boulders that create dozens of grottoes and pools.

The Yacht Week routes in Europe are all about parties and cultural destinations. But when you get to the BVIs, it’s more palm trees, white sand, and turquoise waters. The actual area around the islands is small, which means short sailing routes and long days on beaches like White Bay and The Baths with a painkiller in hand. Your night parties will be laid-back affairs, with trips to the legendary Foxy’s on Jost Van Dyke and beachside bars in Tortola. The routes are typically 10-30 yachts and run in the spring, but the special New Years week includes one of the craziest NYE parties on the planet.

When: December 12th - January 3rd Where: Starting in Yacht Haven near Phuket, you’ll sail through the islands of Southwest Thailand with stops in Koh Yao Noi, Railay Beach, Koh Muk, and Koh Phi Phi. Don’t miss: The Emerald Cave at Koh Muk, a beach you can only reach by swimming through a cave in complete darkness.

Beautiful scenery is great. Epic parties are fun. But too much of either can make a yacht week a little one-sided. The Thai route offers the perfect balance, with opening and closing parties at world-renowned nightclubs (Nikki Beach and XANA Beach Club), a stop at Ko Phi Phi Don, and a relaxed weeklong sailing tour through tropical islands, including the privately-owned Khai Nui and Maya Bay (aka, the place where they filmed that DiCaprio movie). This flotilla typically runs about 20 boats.

click to play video

When: July 23rd - August 6th Where: Starting in either Maramris or Fethiye, you’ll sail to Ciftlik, Ekincik, Sarsala, Gocek, and Gemiler Adasi. Don’t miss: Ekincik, a remote, desert cove with underwater caves perfect for exploring

The newest addition to the Yacht Week experience, this 20-boat excursion along the Turkish Mediterranean coast runs in opposite directions each week and is another ideal itinerary for folks interested in exploring the area. Although there’s still no shortage of late-night parties in the port towns along the way. The extra costs aren’t too bad here, as food in Turkey is cheaper than in other destinations, but it’s new trip, so stay tuned for likely changes to the itinerary in upcoming years.

Sailing Thailand - Phuket to Ko Phi Phi

We took this tour a few years back; Our C.O was fantastic, very knowledgeable. Food was great, and we had the opportunity to go off the beaten track a bit on a land excursion (considering the tour is only 4 days, it was great.) For being on a boat and in a smaller place, which is not my thing, I could have easily done 1-2 weeks. This tour was much more relaxing then the rest of our Thailand tour, and it was much needed. Lots of sun, good food, beautiful landscapes/beaches, great company. G-adventures is still our #1 for tours.

Sail Ko Phi Phi to Phuket Tour

Sail Ko Phi Phi to Phuket

Pleasant. Don’t expect any sailing, it’s motorboat catered for tourists who want to relax, suntan and read a book and eat lots of good food. The wind wasn’t always there to be true but even when it was we had a scheduled tour so not many tourists were up for it so captain has to follow itinerary. It’s a bit sad as the boat crew are all very seasoned sailors who just make a nice little cruise for the middle aged. It’s 2 and 1/2 days not 4 as advertised. Main company is Intrepid and they have so many safety rules, makes you feel like a child in a holiday camp. I had a good time but definitely I’d like to try a proper sailing boat next time.

When is the 2022 2nd Thailand Charter Week?

Asia Pacific Superyachts announce the 2022 2nd Thailand Charter Week Dates

2022 Thailand Charter Week

Thailand Charter Week is Asia’s premier B2B charter event for yachts and superyachts, a luxury yachting event that provides a platform to luxury charter yacht companies, set in the stunning ‘Superyacht Hub of Asia’, Phuket Island.

The second edition will be held from the 16th to the 19th of November 2022 and will once again be hosted by the Phuket Yacht Haven Marina. Organisers of the Thailand Charter Week, the Thai Yachting Business Association (TYBA), are looking to make the coming event even bigger following the successful inaugural edition held two years ago. Inspired by the Antigua Charter Yacht Show and the MYBA Charter Show in Barcelona, the Thailand Charter Week 2022 will be the second international charter event for Yachting & Tourism industry professionals.

READ MORE: Thailand Visa Fee Exemption For International Arrivals Proposed

The B2B event encourages engagement between yachts, marine industry players, sponsors, and professional visitors in an intimate environment. International and local Charter Brokers, Luxury Travel Agents, Luxury Tour Operators, and Hotel Industry Professionals will be introduced to Phuket’s renowned charter yachts, experience Phuket’s famed hospitality and will enjoy a program of destination, activities, and sustainable yachting information along with local entertainment.

The Thailand Charter Week will include a fulfilling program of yacht inspections, presentations, discussions, yachting activities, plus business networking opportunities. For the first two days, charter yachts will be on display at Phuket Yacht Haven Marina. There will also be panel discussions and presentations about various subjects, such as Thailand destinations, marinas, cultural activities, etc.

The last day will feature a one-day ‘familiarization’ cruise aboard participating yachts to exciting charter destinations around Phuket and the Andaman Sea to help build and realize potential business and partnerships.

Thailand Yacht Charter Week

TBYA states:

“Our mission is to offer the most effective platform for your brand to capture and interact with the most relevant target audience.”

The Thailand Charter Week will welcome a wide range of charter yachts offering charters in various daily, weekly, and budget ranges. Most are based in the South-East Asian region for several years in destinations such as Phuket (Thailand), Mergui Archipelago (Myanmar), Langkawi (Malaysia), or the Indonesian Islands. TBYA will match charter brokers and agents with the right type of yacht and crew.

“After two years the wait is finally over as we see an international boat show return to the sunny shores of Phuket Island”, reports Gordon Fernandes of Asia Pacific Superyachts (APS) , adding: “Event organisers are expecting lots of interest in the show as activities return to normal after the pandemic. It will be great to see Phuket buzzing again!”, enthuses Fernandes, noting the Thai government is encouraging high end and luxury travel.

“We are thrilled to welcome back international luxury yachts following Thailand’s lifting of all Covid border restrictions as of October 1st, making long stays easier for luxury vessels to cruise the beautiful islands of the Andaman Seas and the Gulf of Thailand”, reports APS co-founders, Gordon Fernandes, Captains Charlie Dwyer, and Scott Walker.

Now, with the kingdom fully reopened, international visitor and yacht arrivals are on the rise, international events and local festivals are being held and major international and regional airlines are resuming flights from countries around the world.

Thailand yacht charter

Thailand is the bustling sailing hub of Southeast Asia. Offering the most stunning, vast stretches of coastline and unparalleled tropical beauty, Thailand has become a sailing playground for superyachts from around the world. With year-round perfect sailing conditions, hundreds of smaller islands nearby to each other, the possibilities for yacht charters in Thailand are endless. There are two famous regions for yacht charters in Thailand: the southern Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. Both offer spectacular natural scenery, peaceful sailing grounds, sheltered bays, and the most ideal weather perfect for cruising.

How much to charter a yacht in Thailand?

There is every imaginable type of yacht in Thailand for a yacht charter. Whether you are a couple in search for a romantic tropical getaway, or a group of friends wanting to enjoy endless parties on deck, or a family looking for the most memorable holiday in Thailand, there's a yacht perfect for your needs. A 40-foot, 3-cabin catamaran for two people on board can coast around $4,200 for seven nights, while a 47-foot sailing catamaran with four cabins can cost about $5,000 for a week's rent. Additionally, a 134-foot, 5-cabin motor yacht can cost around $120,000 for seven nights for ten people on board.

What are the most popular yacht holidays in Thailand?

Two regions in Thailand offer the most popular and most visited by yacht enthusiasts: the islands and coast of the Andaman and the Gulf of Thailand. Let's start with the more popular sailing ground, which is the Andaman Sea. Phuket is the jewel of the Andaman, and it's the most famous island in Thailand. Millions of tourists worldwide visit the island each year for its rich culture and history, and the breathtaking natural beauty surrounding the islands on the Andaman. Yacht charters in Phuket have plenty of options for itineraries, which include Phang Nga Bay, a World Heritage Site, and teeming with smaller islets made of limestone that seem to rise from the sea and into the sky.

With emerald green waters, pristine white beaches, and a plethora of secluded coves, bays, secret beaches, and caves, Phuket and its seas are genuinely a playground for water worshippers. Yacht charters can hop from one island to another in the archipelago of Ao Phang Nga National Park, with lush mangrove forests, limestone pinnacles, and hidden coves on the coast. Or they could head to the beautiful and famous Phi Phi Islands, with breathtaking views, powder white sand beaches, and all the shades of blue in its crystal clear waters. Other popular cruising spots include Krabi's islands, with over a hundred to explore, and the world-class dive spots of Similan and Surin Islands.

On the other side of Thailand, the Gulf of Thailand's coastal towns and islands offer a different atmosphere. More laid-back, rustic, and charming, the islands of Koh Samui, Koh Tao, Koh Chang, and the Ang Thong National Park are the most famous cruising spots for yacht charters. Koh Samui is world-famous for its laid back atmosphere but also home to million-dollar villas and 5-start mega-resorts. It's the second most visited island in Thailand but offers a more family-friendly and romantic appeal than Phuket's crowded and tourist spots. Ang Thong National Park, a protected nature reserve, features 40 islands to explore, with each one being close to one another. Other notable cursing destinations in the Gulf of Thailand include Koh Tao and Koh Chang.

Where to go on a luxury yacht charter in Thailand?

Being the sailing center of Southeast Asia, Thailand features luxury yacht charter destinations that offer a plethora of luxury yacht itineraries to choose from. Phuket is the top spot for luxury yacht charters in Thailand, with two world-class marinas: the Yacht Haven Marina, and the Ao Po Grand Marina, offering luxury services and hundreds of berths. Phuket also plays host to international regattas, such as the Phuket King's Cup Regatta, Asia's biggest and most popular regatta. The Phuket International Boat Show also happens once a year on the island, where some of the world's best superyachts are on show.

The seaside resort city of Pattaya is another luxury yacht destination in Thailand. Close to Bangkok, this city is a favorite weekend destination for locals, offering beaches and nearby islands to explore. It is also home to the Ocean Marina Yacht Club, another world-class marina in Thailand. Pattaya also plays host to The Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show, another event in Thailand where superyachts from all over the world are showcased. While Koh Samui doesn't have a marina, the islands offer many safe anchorages for luxury yachts to drop anchor.

Koh Samui has become a favorite for luxury yacht charters because of its popularity with the rich and famous. Offering luxury villas, resorts, spas, and indulgent experiences, superyachts have made their way to Koh Samui and called it home during the country's dry season of November to April. Thailand's magical islands and calms seas offer perfect sailing conditions in Southeast Asia. And with bustling tourism infrastructure, luxury villas, and resorts found on the coast, it is no wonder yacht charters are one of the best ways to enjoy an authentic Thai holiday.

The region is also ideal for diving enthusiasts, notably the islands of Koh Samui, Surin and Similan, which are widely considered to yield some of the best dive sites in the world.

Phuket on the Andaman Sea is a major superyacht hub, drawing visitors to its golden shores, and is also ideally situated close to Myanmar, Malaysia and the Indonesian archipelago which opens up another world of charter itinerary options.

Thailand has a rich past with evidence of rice cultivation and bronze casting dating back over 5,000 years. Modern Thai’s have their ancestral roots in Southern China, whose people mitigated over between the 10th and 13th centuries.

A succession of tribal groups, notably the Khmers, established powerful kingdoms, with the kingdom of Ayutthaya becoming the dominant tribe from the 14th century. After a series of conflicts over the centuries with the Burmese and their subsequent expulsion by national heroes Taksin and Chakri in the 18th century, the Chakri Dynasty was established, with Bangkok as the main capital. Chakri became Rama I, the first king of the Chakri Dynasty, which has held power to this day.

Thailand is a year-round cruising destination with temperatures ranging between 25-35 degrees. There are two distinct seasons in Thailand which run concurrent with its northeast and southwest monsoons.

The northeast monsoon is the most favourable for yacht charters as it is generally drier and the winds tend to be more predictable. This season runs from November through March, which coincides with the northern hemisphere winter.

The best conditions for sailing can be found in the Andaman Sea region, which experiences light to moderate winds, with drier conditions and cooler temperatures.

With thousands of miles of coastline and countless islands there are plenty of lovely yacht anchorage spots to be discovered in Thailand. Some of the best can be found around the myriad lush islands in the Andaman Sea.

For yacht charters commencing in Phuket, there are some gorgeous anchorages to be found, especially along the west coast, including Patong Beach , Karon and Kata . The busiest anchorage is at  Ao Chalong , which incidentally is the only place you can register to cruise outside the borders of Thailand. Located on the south-west peninsula of Phuket you’ll find Nai Harn , one of the most beautiful havens on the island.

Other recommended anchorages in the Andaman Sea;

  • Phi Phi Don, Ton Sai Ba y: located on the south side of the two islands. If you prefer to avoid the crowds, the north side is quieter. You can anchor at Phi Phi Le however the water is deep, and the bays are usually quite busy with tour boats.
  • Phang Nga National Park:  some easy anchoring can be found in between the sheer rocks. Another splendid anchorage can be found off the east side of Koh Hong.
  • Koh Planak:  a popular anchorage spot for exploring the spectacular caves.
  • Krabi : there are two good anchorages on the north and south sides of Koh Hong Krabi, plus a pretty anchorage at nearby Koh Pak Bia, off the west coast.

Further afield, you will find some of the most sublime anchorages can be found in the Surin and Similan Islands  to the north and Tarutao National Park, near the Malaysian border, to the south.

With more than 80 islands to explore in this region, there are plenty of magnificent anchorages to be found in the Gulf of Thailand:

  • Ko Mak:  an island located to the south of Koh Chang, where there are some lovely anchorages to be found, especially in the northwest.
  • Ko Kut:  Further south lies the breathtaking island of Ko Kut, where you can jump off and hike or kayak to the stunning Klong Yai Ki waterfall.
  • Ko Samui:  for an energetic buzz, head to this beautiful island and drop anchor in some of the lovely bays around here, although it does tend to get busy, especially around Christmas and New Year. The southern end of the island is quieter. Head across to Koh Pah Nyang and tie up to a mooring buoy right on the beach.
  • Ang Thong National Marine Park: an absolute must for those cruising the Gulf of Thailand, with the most sheltered anchorages found off the bay at Koh Ang Thong.

  • Thailand experiences two high tides per day ranging from half a meter to just over three meters which you should be mindful of, especially in some of the marinas.
  • Avoid daytrippers around popular hotspots by arriving either first thing in the morning or late afternoon when they all head back to their resorts.
  • For sail yacht charters, you'll find optimum sailing conditions tend to be during the evening and in the morning, with winds dying off in the afternoons, especially during the northwest monsoon season.

Asia's biggest and most popular one-week sailing event, the King's Cup Regatta,  is also held annually here in Phuket, attracting the world's glitterati and yachting elites – definitely not an event to be missed!

Phang Nga Bay and Phi Phi Islands

You can't deny the unbelievable beauty of these islands, clustered around the Ao Phang Nga National Park . Their majestic elegance is unrivaled anywhere else in the world, where limestone cliffs climb vertically out of tranquil cerulean waters.

Head south towards Koh Hong , where you can discover secluded beaches only accessible by tender, before moving on to the Phi Phi Islands : one of the most famous locations in Thailand.

About a 20 minutes cruise from Phuket, you will find the islands of Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Le, characterized by sheer cliffs, stunning beaches and sultry jungles. Phi Phi Le is also home to Maya Bay , the ravishing white-sand beach lagoon made famous by the homonymous Hollywood film. Both islands are interconnected by a sandy isthmus where you will find Ton Sai Bay , a lively hub for restaurants, shops and bars and the beating heart of this small archipelago. For something a bit quieter check out Monkey Bay , a beautiful sandy promontory, abundant with wildlife and tropical birds.

Don't miss a trip to Koh Yao Yai , a tiny island, otherwise known as James Bond Island, where they shot scenes from Man with the Golden Gun.

Head to Krabi for amazing snorkeling and diving around beautiful coral reefs where you can discover over 200 species of fish, as well as a host of resorts and good rock climbing areas around the headland.

If it's more serious diving you are after, then cruise south to the remote tiny islands of Hin Daeng and Hin Muang , respectively known as Red Rock and Purple Rock, so-called because of the vivid soft corals that cling to each vertical underwater outcrop. Here you will find shimmering shoals of trevally, redtooth triggers, reef sharks and big morays, as well as the majestic whale shark. Purple Rock is Thailand's highest underwater vertical wall, representing a slightly more challenging dive, especially for novices.

Another must-see destination are the Surin and Similan islands to the north, a beautiful group of islands that offer some of the most superlative diving in the world, thanks to their series of underwater volcanic seascapes, including  Richelieu Rock . This coral-covered pinnacle, located 10km east of the S urin National Park , is undoubtedly one of the most incredible dive sites in Asia, where you will find an abundance of fascinating marine life, such as barracuda, frogfish, manta rays, octopus and whale sharks.

Gulf of Thailand

Bordered by Cambodia , Thailand and Vietnam , the Gulf of Thailand on the kingdom's east flank has always been a popular destination for backpackers.  However, with its surfeit of paradise islands, resplendant national parks and exquisite powder-fine beaches, not to mention fantastic diving, excellent cruising areas and international transport links, this region is fast becoming a popular region for yacht charters too.

Ang Thong Archipelago

Koh Samui is the largest and most popular island in this beautiful archipelago, characterized by dense mountainous jungle, coral reefs, coconut groves and picturesque white-sand beaches. It is also a great base from which to explore the Gulf and boasts a range of luxury five-star resorts and entertainment.

Head north to the beautiful palm-fringed Koh Phangan , Koh Samui's sister island famous for its full moon parties which attract thousands of tourists every month.

Explore the jaw-dropping  Ang Thong National Marine Park , a group of 40 heavenly islands, offering fantastic sailing, exotic beaches and tucked away turquoise-blue lagoons.

Koh Chang Archipelago

Located on the east of the gulf, the Mu Joh Chang National Park is a breathtaking archipelago where you will find everything from hiking trails and waterfalls, to sandy beaches and exquisite aquamarine waters hosting an abundance of tropical marine life. Visit the largest island Koh Chang , also known as Elephant Island, which is covered in steep lush jungle rainforests, unearthly waterfalls and a host of native wildlife, especially monkeys! There are also some fantastic diving opportunities around WWII wrecks nearby.

To the north, you'll find Pattaya , a popular mainland destination and home to the Ocean Marina Pattaya , Thailand's largest marina. Here you can enjoy everything from boutique shopping, deluxe spa treatments, vibrant bars and clubs, along with plenty of tranquil sheltered bays perfect for anchoring.

an aerial shot of a bright turquoise lagoon on a rocky island in myanmar

To the far north in neighboring Myanmar you will find the breathtaking Mergui Archipelago , an untouched paradise characterized by pristine white beaches and dense jungle rainforests. There are 800 or so islands to explore, however the destination is so exclusive visitors will need to arrange a permit before they arrive.

This location is completely off the grid, with no WiFi reception to be found anywhere – your cue to switch off, lie back and soak up the tranquility and primitive beauty of this stunning region.

Also in the Andaman sea, you will find the lovely island of  Langkawi, located in northwestern  Malaysia, bordering Thailand in the south. This island is a popular destination for yacht charters and boasts several marinas, including Royal Langkawi Yacht Club . There are also a number of exclusive resorts on the island, as well as a raft of watersports, entertainment and excellent dining options.

Thailand is a popular yacht charter destination, especially during the winter season, therefore we recommend that you book your yacht charter well in advance of your trip to secure your perfect yacht. It is also useful to book early in order to secure a date when everyone in your charter party is available as the longer you leave it, the more challenging this will be.

Your yacht charter broker will also need plenty of time to tailor an itinerary to suit you, including securing any nights that you wish to spend in marinas. Advance booking will allow your broker the optimum time to organize everything down to the last detail to ensure your yacht charter goes smoothly.

Thailand Yacht Charter Q&A

Thailand is a year-round cruising destination which enjoys average temperatures of around 25-30 degrees. However, the best time to visit is during the northeast monsoon season which occurs between November and March.

The Andaman Sea region on the west coast also tends to experience more drier and cooler conditions, with light to moderate winds making for optimum cruising.

There should be plenty of yachts to choose from that suit both you and your budget when booking your Thailand yacht charter.

Before you book, be mindful of the additional charter costs, such as berthing, fuel, VAT, food and drink and crew tips, which are not included in the base rate.

Some of the popular hotspots can get very crowded with day trippers, so arrange to visit these areas either first thing in the morning or late afternoon when they return to their hotels.

The Surin and Similan Islands are closed May to October during the southwest monsoon season.

Winds tend to slack off in the afternoons, especially during the northeast monsoon season, something to consider if you are booking a sailing yacht for your charter.

Most yacht charters tend to begin in Phuket, located on the west coast in the Andaman Sea. The island is a renowned superyacht hub which boasts several marinas and reliable international transport links, making it the perfect place to kick start your yacht charter. Explore the breathtaking Phang Nga Bay, the exquisite Phi Phi Islands and the sublime Surin and Similan Islands in the north.

For yacht charters on the east coast in the Gulf of Thailand, you can fly into Bangkok or to the smaller islands such as Koh Samui where you can meet your yacht before heading off to explore the regions plethora of paradise islands, white sand beaches and incredible national parks.

Thailand has a wide array of yachts to choose from, whether you are looking for a motor yacht, sailing yacht or catamaran. Thailand has become one of the most popular winter destinations to charter, so we do recommend booking well in advance in order to secure your perfect yacht.

Alternatively, please speak with your yacht charter broker , so that they may help you book your ideal yacht and preferred dates for you and your charter party.

After you have decided on your perfect yacht, your yacht broker will then prepare a legally binding contract for you to sign, which is a standard agreement with conditions set by the terms applicable to the destination.

MYBA (Worldwide Yachting Association, formerly known as Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association) is the most widely used for yacht charters.

This "plus all expenses'' contract means you will be required to pay for additional items such as fuel, food and drink, taxes and dockage fees on top of the base charter fee. Typically, guests will incur around 25-30% additional expenses, which are paid upfront, along with 50% of the base rate at least one month prior to your yacht charter.

Yacht charter in Thailand

An amazing combination of pristine nature, modern pace of life and best traditions of Buddhism is the cornerstone that attracts sailors to this country from all around the world. If you dream about unforgettable yacht charter, it should be in top of your list.

Located right in the heart of Southeast Asia, this country is surrounded by the Andaman Sea on the west side of the Malay Peninsula, and the Gulf of Thailand and South China Sea on the east side. Until  1939 it was called Siam, which means "freedom.” Bordered by Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar, Thailand is the only country in Southeast Asia that has kept its independence through the years. As a result, the  traditional lifestyle that has been intact for centuries has been left  almost unchanged. Well known for peace and calmness, the Thai people will make your sailing vacation even more pleasant.

Geographically, Thailand can be divided into 5 distinct regions, but  the southern peninsula of Malay and the eastern part of the country are of the most interest to sailors.

Thailand is washed with two oceans – Pacific on the eastern part and Indian in the western part, Thus while sailing, you may expect moderate breeze, clean tropical waters, number of safe moorings  and anchorages. You definitely will not find here number of equipped  marinas or harbors, but on every mooring or anchorage you will easily find some cozy local restaurant, water supply or grocery store. While Thai cuisine and the hospitality of locals will definitely bring only positive vibes.

Gulf of Thailand boat rentals

Eastern part of country covers several provinces including Trat, Chantburi and Rayong. On the southwest, it reaches the Gulf of Thailand, and it borders Cambodia to the east. The rugged coastline is bordered  with rocky islands and covered with lush green forest. While sailing, you will see many rivers flowing south to create large mangrove forests, followed by pristine white sand beaches. The east coast is very popular for its resort areas, but few sailors know about  the more secluded yacht charter opportunities in Koh Chang.

Sailing in Koh Chang

The Koh Chang yacht charter base is located only 194 miles (312  km) from Bangkok and offers excellent access to the mostly untouched cruising grounds. Being the second largest island in the country (after Phuket), a Koh Chang sailing vacation is a perfect combination of emerald waters, white sand beaches and pristine jungle, waterfalls and stunning lush landscapes. Koh Chang means “elephant” in the Thai language. A fitting name for an island that is shaped like a giant sleeping elephant.

Phuket yacht charter

Phuket is the largest island in Thailand, and is located near the west coast in the Andaman Sea. The east coast of Phuket offers the finest cruising grounds, with easy access to 39 different islands. Discover towering pinnacles of limestone when sailing in the sheltered waters of Phang-nga Bay, set sails to see the famous Phi Phi located to the south of Andaman Sea, or the many beautiful locations in the province of Krabi. Make an offshore trip to one of the National Parks located in the Siliman, or Suring Islands, one of the most famous diving sites in the world.

The kind and hospitable people will make your sailing vacation and boat rentals in Phuket even more pleasant and memorable.

Best time for yachting in Thailand is from November to April. During this period, the weather is not too hot and there is quite a  small amount of precipitation. However, tropical climate and no typhoons make sailing in this region comfortable and safe all year round.

But even though, we recommend to choose the right time for travel. Favorable  conditions for navigation along the eastern and western coasts are from November to April. If you are looking for some extreme sailing conditions, you may go to the west coast from May to October, during the monsoon season. From November to April the weather is ideal for sailing both on the west and east coast of Thailand. From May to October – is the season of the southwestern monsoon. At this time, it is better to avoid the western waters but there are dozens of different sailing itineraries from the main yacht charter base located on the island of Phuket.

Sailing tips

Phuket is gaining growing popularity among sailors of different levels. It offers great coastline, quite simple navigation and a large choice of sailing itineraries of different duration. So, all this makes Phuket the best starting point for bareboat yacht charter.

This place is so popular that on top of three comfortable yacht marinas, two more were opened in the recent years. One of  the main advantages of Phuket sailing area is that gives you miles of emptiness and relaxing solitude free from big cruising ships.

Sailing grounds

There are two main directions of routes for yachts charter vacation – eastern and western. To the east of Phuket is the Phang-Nga Bay, where the famous Panuk and Hong islands are located. Also, you should pay attention to the James Bond Island, Krabi and Riley Beach, famous among rock climbers. The western shore of the island of Phuket is washed by the waters of the Andaman Sea, which is part of the Indian Ocean. The Similan and Surin are located 100 km northwest of Phuket and included in the top ten places on the planet for scuba  diving. Even further to the northwest are the Andaman Islands, known for their pristine natural beauty, incredible fishing and diving.

During your travel along the bay, you should definitely admire the network of amazing grottoes, caves and tunnels of Koh Panak. Landing from a yacht and having moved to a kayak, you can admire the hidden lagoons and mangrove forests that are in the center of the island.

In this direction is also the island of Krabi, famous for its snow-white beaches and emerald jungles.

During your sailing vacation, it’s worth visiting Phi Phi, a part of the marine national park. Here you will find closed lagoons, calcareous cliffs of striking height and much more.

A smaller Phi Phi Leh, was formed by limestone rocks. In this regard, the water around the island has acquired a unique turquoise hue. Although it is considered to be uninhabited, you can still find lots of interesting things to explore. Famous Viking cave with a picture of an ancient man, numerous swallow nests collected by locals as they considered to be kind of a delicacy.

Koh Hong considered to be one of the most fabulous islands in Krabi area. Here you may take your time and relax contemplating white sand beaches, hidden lagoons with shallow waters beaming with exotic fish. While on the anchorage take a kayak, and explore nearby caves. Up in the sky you will see sea eagles gliding in circles searching for prey while looking down you will find emerald bottom decorated with numerous starfish.

Bareboat charter will give you a chance to visit Koh Pannyi – a sheer rock, with a small fishing village near it built on wooden and concrete piles. Here, among mazes of huts you will find small colorful craft market as well as some bars and restaurants offering variety of fresh sea food dishes from the catch of the day.

It is hard to believe, but there is only one policeman in charge of the island, and couple of years ago there was even no electricity. An  interesting landmark is a football field built by schoolchildren directly on the water. There are no hotels, but you can spend the night on your boat or catamaran on a safe anchorage nearby.

Your next sailing destination is Koh Poda, covered with lush palm trees and surrounded by white beaches. A few meters from the beach there is a coral reef: here you can go snorkeling and admire the diversity of the underwater world.

The other island nearby is Koh Kai – a rock that looks like head and neck of a chicken. Part of it consists of steep rocks, and the opposite shore has beautiful sandy beaches. During strong tides this peninsula is partially flooded.

Phang Nga Bay will amaze you with its unusual, almost mystical beauty. A distinctive feature of this place are steep rocks, protruding vertically from emerald green water. The bay has the status of a marine National park.

Thailand offers great opportunity to combine yacht charter with diving. A lot of coral reefs, as well as a variety of underwater terrain provide unlimited opportunities for diving. Here you have a unique opportunity to meet whale sharks. The best period for diving is November-May. Visibility in water can reach up to 50 meters. Similan Islands are the most popular among divers. Phuket Island in the Andaman Sea is famous for deep-sea fishing and trolling. So, do not forget to rent a fishing kit and you’ll  have a great chance to catch tuna, barracuda, sailfish, marlin and other exotic fish.

Thai Cuisine

Thai cuisine is largely determined by the climate and culture of the country. Tropical vegetation and the proximity of the sea caused widespread use of various fruits, spices and seafood.

Also, migration and contacts with other peoples affected the ways of cooking. For example, the homeland of Thai tribes is mountain settlements in the southeast of China (modern provinces of Guangxi and  Guizhou). Between the 6th and 13th centuries these peoples migrated to the southern lands, where today Laos and Burma are located. Naturally, all this affected culinary preferences. Local  cuisine is a mixture of Chinese and Indian cuisine. Culinary traditions of these countries have had the greatest impact on the formation of local gastronomic predilections.

There are no strict cooking rules in Thai cuisine and taste of any dish depends not only on the set of products and spices, but also on the  personal style of the chef. Very important for Thai cuisine is the balance between food, spices and side dishes. For example, fried chicken with chili is combined with a soup of bitter melon with pork.

Rice in Thai cuisine is the most important product, it’s like bread  in Europe. And if the other dishes are served warm or at room temperature, the rice should be hot enough for you to see a steam.

The second main product is noodles: thin rice (kuaytiao sen lek), thick and nourishing (kuaytiao sen yai), yellow egg (bamee).

Thais eat little, but often. When serving the table, they do not use knives (all products are cut into small pieces). Finish eating usually with fruits. A favorite drink of Thai people is cold water (naam yen).

The main principle of local cuisine is to achieve a balance of five tastes: sweet, sour, salty, bitter and poignant. Various ingredients are used for this purpose.

The two most characteristic of these are curry-based sauce and coconut milk. All kinds of sauces are considered a delicacy, their use depends on the type of dish or meat type. The most famous are kaeng massaman (includes cinnamon, peanuts and nutmeg); kaeng kheow waan (sweet and very hot sauce with greens); kaeng karee (served  with potatoes).

An important nuance of the culinary traditions is the aesthetics of the dish. Making a filigree decor of vegetables and fruits (carving) has become a kind of art here.

All Thai dishes can be divided into four categories:  quick-and well – fried or steamed dishes, as well as soups; spicy dishes – salads or fried dishes with different amounts of spices, often with  the addition of coconut milk; salads – vegetable mixed with meat, the taste can be sweet, and sour but always spicy; cooked vegetables – usually sour, although you can meet them with a sweetish flavor.

Culture & traditions

In Thailand, you will find a wealth of nature perfectly combined with  ancient history, culture and traditions. There are hundreds of islands, beaches, coves and capes. While planning your sailing vacations  Thanks to tropical climate, beaches with  pristine white sand, crystal clear waters, excellent coral reefs and wonderful palm trees. Add to this the friendliness of the Thai people, their magnificent culture and wonderful cuisine. No wonder in recent years it became one of the most popular sailing destinations in Asia.

This country has a long history. And during your sailing trip it may open some of its secrets. Over the long years of existence, the inhabitants of this country honor not only the monarch  and the state charter, but also Buddhist norms. That is why in almost  every part of the country you will meet small churches and chapels with centuries of history. There are a few tens of thousands of them all over the country.

Local people call their home a “land of freedom”, because “thai” means freedom, and it’s not just a coincidence. It is the only country in South-East Asia that has preserved its independence from European states, while all neighboring countries were once colonies of Great Britain or France. This helped to keep its intact beauty and uniqueness.

The main sailing area for yachting is the Andaman Sea, but if you want to get more acquainted with the historical monuments of the  country, then the best choice will be the Gulf of Thailand.

Fans of nightlife should go to Bangkok and Pattaya. Discos, go-go bars, nightclubs every evening are filled with people looking for entertainment. Loud music, bright neon lights, noise and talk of passers-by create a specific atmosphere here.

An important part of Thai culture is traditional music. The Thais also attach great importance to the theater. Modern art (cinema, music)  is very popular too.

An integral part of the way of life of the Thai people is the elephant. In the past, these animals were used in battles, transportation of trees, and today elephants mostly entertain tourists. The image of an elephant can be found even on the Thai flag. Worth  visiting is the island of elephants Koh Chang.

While sailing do not forget to visit at least one the 80 national parks and 32 nature reserves. Khao Yai National Park is the most visited park in country. For those who like to watch birds, it’s  worth going to Doi Suthep National Park, Doi Inthanon, or to Khao Sam  Roi Yot Park in the south. There is the last preserved rain forest in the Khao Yai National Park, which is one of the best parks in the world.

Thailand’s west coast is known for its tropical weather. Being situated near the equator, the country’s southern reaches can get quite hot, and the region does have a rainy season. For the best weather, head to Thailand during the peak charter season – from November to April – although if you don’t mind the heat or occasional rain, you can enjoy a Thailand yacht charter any time of year.

  • When to Go : The dry months in Thailand are November to April, and this is primarily when charter guests flock to the country. From May to October, Thailand experiences its Southwest Monsoon, during which the winds pick up and rain is more common.
  • What to Expect : During the dry season, Thailand offers ideal weather conditions in the mid-80s. It can get hot, but with perfect-temperature waters, you can always cool off. From May to October, the winds pick up and rain is much more common – there’s typically a rain shower in the afternoon, and can rain for a few days continuously. From July to October, the rain is much more constant, with as many as 5 days or more of continuous rain.
  • Water Conditions : No matter the time of year, the waters in Thailand are perfect for swimming. They’re bathwater warm – usually in the mid-70s or 80s. And from November to April, the conditions are perfect for sailing, with calm waters and 2-3 foot waves.

Thailand Yacht Charters – What to Do & See

(Monkey Beach, named for its native dwellers is another favorite!) Whether you’re in the mood for a picnic, or you want to party around the bonfire, the Phi Phi Islands are a must-visit destination.

Than Bok Khorani National Park

Located about 30 miles north of Ao Nang Beach, you’ll find the pristine jungles and mangroves of Than Bok Park . Looking for some excitement? The park’s Tree Top Adventure Park offers canopy tours – which turn your trip to the park into a high-flying adventure.

Rock climbing

Limestone cliffs dot the coastlines around Phuket and Phang Nga Bay. That’s why climbers from around the world flock here. The limestone cliffs are natural rock-climbing gyms, and they’re also extremely beautiful. In Krabi, the cliffs off Railay Beach offer incredible panoramic views, as well as challenging climbing. Book a trip with one of the region’s many climbing outfits, for a day of adventure.

Temple Tours

Thailand’s rich cultural heritage is one of the biggest draws for tourists. And all over, visitors are welcomed by ancient temples in exotic locales. One of the region’s best is Tiger Cave Temple . Located about 15 miles northeast of Railay Beach in Krabi, the temple is in a lush jungle tucked away in the mountains. The ancient architecture, its expansive views, and the temple’s golden Buddha statue are some of the reasons to visit, and during your trip, you’ll be able to take numerous postcard-worthy photos. Don’t forget the camera!

Water Sports

Thanks to Thailand’s tropical climate, the region’s waters are balmy year-round – perfect for a swim or any number of watersports. Surfing is popular south of Phuket in hamlets like Nai Harn, while sea kayaking can be done in any of Thailand’s numerous lagoons. Whether you like kitesurfing, waterskiing, or standup paddleboarding, there are plenty of idyllic coves and beaches to discover while on your Thailand yacht charter in the Andaman Sea.

The Andaman Sea is a sportfishing mecca, as anglers from around the world come here for the region’s bill fish and tuna fishing. Marlin and Sailfish – two billfish varieties – are big game in the waters, as are Whitefin and Yellowfin tuna. Fishing is particularly fruitful during the high season from November to April.

Hot Springs

Throughout the province of Krabi, natural hot springs pools are tucked away in lush jungle landscapes, and the waters are rich with relaxing minerals. Check out Namtok Ron, a hot springs waterfall, which is a popular spot inland in the Khlong Tom district. The pools, which sit in the middle of a running river, offer the best of the best in relaxation.

Island Hopping

Phang Nga Bay is home to more than 1,000 tiny islands, offering yacht charter guests the perfect landscape to explore by sea. The famous James Bond Island – which was featured The Man with the Golden Gun – is known for its limestone towers and is quite popular. Yet, there are plenty of other lesser-known and quieter islands to explore in the bay. In the south, you’ll find other island chains including the Phi Phi Islands, as well as 70+ islands near Ko Lanta.

Spas and Wellness

Thailand is a destination for wellness, as travelers journey here to take part in mindfulness seminars and relaxation retreats. In every town, you’ll find a spa offering authentic Thai massage, as well as tailored detox programs and exotic beauty treatments. Water guns are in full blast to mark Thai New Year festivities despite worries about heat wave

It’s water festival time in Thailand where many are marking the country’s traditional New Year, splashing each other with colorful water guns and buckets in an often raucous celebration that draws thousands of people, even as this year the Southeast Asian nation marks record-high temperatures causing concern.

The festival, known as Songkran in Thailand, is a three-day shindig that starts Saturday and informally extends for a whole week, allowing people to travel for family celebrations. The holiday is also celebrated under different names in neighboring Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos, which like Thailand have populations that are predominantly Theravada Buddhist.

Songkran is immensely popular — predicted this year to attract more than 500,000 foreign tourists and generate more than 24 billion baht ($655 million) in revenue, according to the state tourism agency. Past Thai governments have been reluctant to call for dialing down the fun even during crises such as droughts and the pandemic

Though the festival originated as a way to pray for a rainy season that helped crops and included activities such as cleansing images of the Buddha and washing the hands and feet of elders, Songkran these days is now often associated with public drunkenness, sexual assault in the guise of merrymaking, and a spike in traffic fatalities, noticeable to the point that the extended holiday has been dubbed the “seven dangerous days.”

The festival usually falls at the hottest time of the year when temperatures can creep above 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit).

But this year, the unusual heat wave, with expected record temperatures for the next few months, has triggered apprehension. The United Nations Children’s Fund warned Thursday the sweltering weather could put millions of children’s lives at risk, asking caregivers to take extra precautions.

The UNICEF statement said in the Asia-Pacific region, “around 243 million children are exposed to hotter and longer heatwaves, putting them at risk of a multitude of heat-related illnesses, and even death.”

Heat waves can be lethal as they affect the ability to breathe, making the old and young particularly vulnerable.

Benjamin Horton, director of the Earth Observatory of Singapore where natural phenomena such as climate change are studied, said three factors determine heat waves; El Nino, a natural, temporary and occasional warming of part of the Pacific, an increase in global temperatures and human-induced climate change .

The poor are particularly vulnerable to heat waves, exacerbated in many Southeast Asian cities where concrete buildings make the weather more stifling and few trees provide shade, he said.

Horton added that the past year saw record-high global average temperatures and the heat waves in Southeast Asia were mirroring that trend, adding that “it is only going to get worse.”

The entirety of the Mekong Delta, which includes Vietnam as well as Myanmar, Laos, Thailand and Cambodia, saw extreme heat, with parts of Laos and Thailand seeing temperatures that were 5-7 degrees Celsius (41-44.6 degrees Fahrenheit) more than the average between April 3-9, according to the Mekong Dam Monitor program of the Stimson Center in Washington D.C.

This extreme heat also means less water for hydropower dams to produce energy.

“Heat waves put a significant strain on power systems, from surging energy demand to compromising grid capacity. Hydropower generation is particularly impacted” when heat results in drought over multiple years, according to Dimitri Pescia, director for Southeast Asia at the German-based thinktank Agora Energiewende

“The cumulative effects, amplified by climate change, cause great distress to society and ecosystems,” he said.

Singapore’s Horton said earth-warming carbon emissions needed a drastic cutting down as people learned to adapt to the new climate which included learning the dangers of overly hot weather and for authorities to create an emergency response to warn people about high temperatures beforehand and provide them with areas to cool down when needed.

Last week, the Philippines suspended classes in more than 5,800 public schools and shifted to home-based and online learning to protect millions of students from the scorching heat.

Schools in several cities, including the congested capital Manila, shifted classes to early morning to avoid sweltering noontime and afternoon temperatures. Also, tens of thousands of students in grade and high schools were allowed to alternate between going to school and online classes every other day, officials said.

Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan, a medical doctor, said they have limited outdoor activities especially if the heat index rises to an extreme level. “If people don’t have urgent tasks outside, the best precaution really is to stay indoors.”

Associated Press writers Sopheng Cheang in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and Jim Gomez in Manila, Philippines contributed to this report. Asia Business Climate correspondent Aniruddha Ghosal reported from Hanoi, Vietnam.
