Bay Ship And Yacht is an example of the best of the best. They are a fantastic employer and they do amazing work. For Alamedens, Bayship And Yacht flies a bit under the radar. You really can't see their business from the roads around Alameda. But Alamedens should know, Bay Ship And Yacht contributes to the Bay Area economy and makes possible our robust, continuously growing, passenger ferry services. Have you ever wondered where tugboats get worked on? Do you have an idea what tugboats do? Without tugboats, those giant cargo ships that bring in everything we use in the United States and export all the things we grow in the Central Valley would not be able to moor alongside the dock. And without Bayship And Yacht, those tugboats wouldn't run. Bay Ship And Yacht is one of the unsung heroes of our region.

They have everything for boats and ships! Highly recommend them for their knowledge and selection of parts.

While I don't actually have a ship or a yacht (yet), it's great having Bay Ship & Yacht around. For a shipmaniac like myself, there's never a shortage of stunning vessels moored for your viewing pleasure. Forget Hollywood celebs -- there are many big-name ships that frequent BS&Y. The Balclutha, Californian, your local ferries, military ships from all eras, tugboats, luxury yachts, and even National Geographic wonder twins Sea Bird and Sea Lion have all stopped by for a visit. BS&Y is a 24-hour yard, so you can ogle the beauties day or night. Spyglass optional.

Shipbuilding: Leadership Transition at Bay Ship & Yacht

Bay Ship & Yacht founders Bill Elliott and Alan Cameron step back, name Joel Welter CEO, Gerona Goethe General Manager

Bill Elliott, who during a 45-year career catapulted Bay Ship & Yacht (BS&Y) from operating out of a single, mobile shipping container known as the “Shipyard in a Box” to becoming a premiere ship repair conglomerate in San Francisco Bay, announced a new generation of leadership for the company.

Joel Welter, currently Chief Naval Architect, was named Chief Executive Officer and Gerona Goethe, currently Assistant General Manager was tapped tas General Manager. Both changes are effective March 28, 2022.

Welter graduated from Webb Institute in 1994 with a degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering and has been with BS&Y since 1998.

Goethe, who attended California Maritime Academy, holds a degree in Marine Engineering Technology and has been with the company since 2000.

Founded by Elliott in 1977, BS&Y’s steady expansion of marine refit and repair capabilities now serves a cross-section of commercial and government customers encompassing the region’s expanding ferry system, barge network, superyachts and more.

BS&Y’s main facility is located in Alameda, Calif., along with Svendsen’s Marine & Industrial supply, employing approximately (350) craftspeople. Another facility, Svendsen’s Bay Marine in Richmond, Calif. specializes in commercial and recreational vessels.

Vice President Alan Cameron joined Elliott’s fledging BS&Y in 1979 and currently serves as General Manager. Both Elliott and Cameron will be engaged in business development outside BSY, with the various endeavors of Bay Maritime Corp.

Bay Ship & Yacht Co

About bay ship & yacht co.

We have always had a passion for quality.

Bay Ship & Yacht was founded in 1977 by Bill Elliott with a primary focus on the construction and repair of wooden ships. Bill traveled the country with his crew, instilling in them a deep respect for the sea and a passion for achieving the level of quality that ocean travel demands.   That passion endured as the company made the transition to repair and conversion of commercial and military vessels and superyachts. Today, the passion for quality anchors our mission to deliver absolute customer satisfaction.    Bay Ship & Yacht's commitment to quality construction and repair is widely recognized throughout the commercial vessel community. That reputation is well-known to experienced owners who have made Bay Ship & Yacht their company of choice, and who recognize that the Bay Ship & Yacht experience has set the standard for others to follow.

Chris Johnson was in a tugboat late one night when his vessel started taking on water.

Johnson, then a port engineer for Foss Maritime, called Alameda’s Bay Ship & Yacht. The shipyard rustled some workers out of bed to hoist Johnson’s vessel out of the water and begin emergency repairs.

“There have been many situations like that, and I’ve never had anything they couldn’t handle,” said Johnson, now the marine superintendent for the San Francisco Bar Pilots.

Most activity at the facility isn’t that dramatic, but it’s no less important for keeping an engine of the Bay Area economy shipshape.

Up to 300 vessels berth annually at Bay Ship & Yacht, where 250 employees repair, rebuild and maintain everything from workhorse tugboats to commuter ferries and floating pleasure palaces.

“They’re a bit like God. If Bay Ship disappeared tomorrow, it would be nothing less than a crisis,” said Bobby Winston, the proprietor of Bay Crossings, a monthly maritime newspaper. “You’d have to invent them.”

Bill Elliott founded the company in 1977 as a mobile construction-and-repair outfit specializing in wooden ships. It settled in its current home next to Rosenblum Cellars Winery on Main Street in 1994 and has been growing steadily ever since.

“Over the last few years, we’ve incorporated a lot of new facilities, moving forward to become a 21st-century shipyard,” said Ira Maybaum, Bay Ship’s director of business development.

Its sweet spot is midsize working boats — ferries, fishing boats, military vessels, tugboats and barges — that experts say are integral to the area’s economy.

The company itself is now one of Alameda’s largest private employers, said Lori Taylor, Alameda’s community development director. She estimates the island’s maritime industry currently employs about 1,000 people, with Bay Ship & Yacht the largest contributor.

James Dalske, assistant dean of students at the California Maritime Academy in Vallejo, said the area’s maritime industry took a big hit during the recession but is bouncing back. Bay Ship & Yacht, he said, helps boat-based businesses thrive and stay local by providing the critical support they need.

That support was on full display one recent afternoon, as crews overhauled the 31-guest room National Geographic Sea Lion cruise ship, painted the WETA ferry Pisces and refueled the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Pike. In nearby warehouses, tradesmen fabricated the complex machinery that keeps boats afloat as workers tooled around the sprawling shipyard on bicycles.

One repeat customer is the National Park Service. It’s hired Bay Ship & Yacht for several projects, including the $10 million-plus refurbishment of the 1895 schooner C.A. Thayer, which is docked at San Francisco’s Hyde Street Pier.

The wooden-ship reconstruction required craftsmen to specially bend pieces of lumber, said Lynn Cullivan, a park ranger there.

“That’s pretty specialized. It was a hard, intricate and delicate job to do,” he said.

Today Bay Ship is increasingly targeting the mogul market. Super yachts, or yachts longer than 100 feet, often bypass San Francisco Bay for warmer climates. Maybaum hopes the upcoming America’s Cup in 2013, with races beginning next year, can put the area — and its ship facilities — on the map of their well-heeled owners.

But it’s already making a name for itself in the rarefied super-yacht world. Workers will soon begin lengthening a 170-foot super yacht by some 36 feet.

“We’ll literally cut it in half, then insert the midbody, which we’re getting ready to build right now,” Maybaum said.

Maybaum said it’s that kind of diverse service offering that will keep business sailing along Alameda’s waterfront.

Added Winston of Bay Crossings, “The ferries and barges and tugboats are here, and they always are going to be here. The everyday work of commerce, all of that would stop if you didn’t have a shipyard to keep these things going.”

Alameda, california.

Saikley Architects worked with Bay Ship & Yacht Company to create and develop a new vision for their unique 22-acre bayside industrial site at Alameda Point, which borders new residential and commercial development. Th eir company was founded in 1977. Initially they focused on the construction and repair of wooden ships, but has transitioned over the years to repairing, converting and building commercial and military vessels and superyachts, and continues to evolve in related state-of-the art capacities.

We did multiple projects , including a site Master Plan as well as the creation of a site identity for their new commercial/industrial park—the Bay Maritime Center—to support the needs of multiple tenants.

The projects balanced the needs of several business functions: preserving the historic beauty of the industrial site, supporting Bay Ship & Yacht Co.’s environmental ethos, addressing vehicular circulation and security, upgrading for ADA, and navigating complex approvals for site development.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) has announced an award of $830,380 in grant funds to Bay Ship & Yacht Co., of Alameda, through the Small Shipyard Grant Program.

“Small shipyards strengthen America’s commercial fleet, bolster our economic security and generate good jobs,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. “We are proud to help these shipyards reinforce their vital role in the U.S. maritime sector.”

Since 2008, MARAD’s Small Shipyard Grant Program has awarded $303 million to nearly 350 shipyards in 32 states and territories throughout the United States.

“As shipbuilding technologies continue to advance, Small Shipyard Grants help America’s shipyards acquire the equipment they need to compete, thrive and expand America’s maritime industry,” said Maritime Administrator Ann Phillips. “These grants are also economic boosts to the communities in which shipyards are located as well as to our industrial supply chain.”

Exhibit to detail Japanese community’s history on Island

At the turn of the 20th century, when Japanese immigrants arrived in Alameda, they built a thriving Japantown along lower Park Street, bustling with a sewing school, bicycle shops, bath houses, a photo studio, a Methodist church and Buddhist temple.

These immigrants worked as gardeners, dry cleaners and cooks. Their children, born in from 1910 to 1940, were Americans overflowing with hope for the future. In December 1941, though, when war broke out between the United States and Japan, the trajectory of this community changed overnight. By May 1942, everyone of Japanese descent was evacuated from Alameda and its Japantown vanished.

Now, more than 80 years later, a new exhibit, “Overflowing with Hope: The Hidden History of Japanese Americans in Alameda,” documents the wartime removal of one marginalized community through images, testimonies, artifacts and long-hidden stories. The exhibit running through July 15 will open with a program and reception at 4 p.m. May 17 in the Stafford Community Meeting Room of the Alameda Free Library at 1550 Oak St. Free tickets are available online and at the door.

For more information including photos and artwork, email Project Director Brad Shirakawa at [email protected] or visit bit.ly/3LTNyQK online, where a link for tickets is also available.

A Haven for Research Vessels in Alameda

Bay Ship & Yacht frequently performs work for research institutes because it is a shipyard that can accommodate these unique projects. Recently, Bay Ship & Yacht has completed the maintenance and repair work on several prestigious research vessels for the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, UC San Diego, Oregon State University, NOAA and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute. Self-performing nearly all the work, Bay Ship & Yacht’s tasks on these vessels included: underwater body painting and repair work; machinist work throughout the vessel; structural repairs of all types on steel and aluminum vessels; as well as piping, lagging, hydraulic and joiner work.

Here’s a roll call of these recent projects:

R/V Melville (La Jolla, California), a Scripps Institute research vessel, was recently repaired. Melville has long been a significant part of the Scripps fleet, performing many types of important oceanographic research missions in oceans worldwide. She was recently docked in Bay Ship & Yacht’s new covered drydock, the HMB-1. Originally built for the Navy and named after Arctic pioneer Rear Admiral George Melville, the vessel is 297 feet long with a displacement of 2,900 tons. After work on Melville was complete, the vessel left Alameda and moored at the Treasure Island facility, then spent a brief time at the Exploratorium for scientific tours. Finally, Melville departed for scientific missions in the Pacific.

R/V New Horizon (La Jolla, California), another Scripps Institute of Oceanography research vessel, was recently repaired. New Horizon is a 1,000-ton vessel that has visited Bay Ship & Yacht on several occasions. The vessel is another very important vessel for Scripps, conducting scientific studies all across the Pacific and beyond.

R/V Oceanus (Newport, Oregon), an Oregon State University research vessel, was recently repaired. Oceanus belongs to OSU’s College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences and is responsible for a tremendous amount of very specialized research. Weighing 960 tons and 177 feet long, the vessel is a particularly good fit at Bay Ship & Yacht in Alameda using the Synchrolift, a state-of-the-art system that uses rails to move vessels up to 200 feet and 1,200 tons to one of 16 dry-berth working stations.

R/V Western Flyer (Monterey, California), a Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute vessel, was recently repaired on Bay Ship & Yacht’s drydock number 1. Western Flyer recently underwent some major upgrades with the addition of bow thrusters that will help facilitate its scientific studies. Weighing nearly 500 tons, Western Flyer is a very unique aluminum vessel of Swath design.

R/V Oscar Dyson (Kodiak, Alaska) is one of NOAA’s fleet of oceanographic, fisheries and climatic research vessels. At 208 feet and 2,500 tons, with an ice strengthened hull, she is a formidable vessel to handle the rigors of the Bering Sea.
