Towns and Resorts to visit on Antigua

On your Antigua yacht charter you will want to explore the hundreds of beaches and exclusive resorts that help to make this island rank so highly in the minds of those who enjoy a sailing vacation.

The capital, St John's has a lot to offer, from museums to shopping and restaurants. If the colonial history of the island appeals you can see the old British forts and at least two museums devoted to slavery on the island - well worth a visit to understand the truth of the history here.

Jolly Harbour on the west coast of Antigua is is a privately owned settlement with a marina, 500 villas and 50 shops that will entertain you all you need! Jolly Harbour Marina is up there among the better marinas across the Caribbean Islands, and on a circuit of the island is well worth a pause for an afternoon.

Great Bird Island and Green Island are two escapes from humanity that you may enjoy as a break from the busy marinas and socialising. Great Bird Island is a small island just 3km NE off Antigua and is noted for snakes unique to the island as well as its population of Tropic Bird and Man O' War Birds. Perhaps avoiding the opportunity to meet the Antigua Racer snakes you will love the beaches too. Green Island to the south of English Harbour meanwhile is also uninhabited and a great retreat from the hustle and bustle ashore.

You can't talk about Antigua without mentioning its beaches! Dickenson Bay near St John's is among the best beaches in the entire Caribbean, though it can be a victim of its own success thanks to the crowds. Near Jolly Harbor on the west coast is Hermitage Bay - almost as beautiful as Dickenson Bay but far quieter!

You don't need to worry about being an experienced sailor or even sailing the boat out of English Harbor with Borrow a Boat! An English Harbour crewed charter (private charter) on a motor yacht or sailing catamaran luxury yacht can mean you do as much or as little physically sailing the yacht as you like on your yacht charter holiday.

A skippered yacht charter or will mean that the catamaran company's skipper will be aboard with their own cabin to attend to all your needs. A crewed yacht charter will involve one or two crew on the boat trip who will cook, sail and make suggestions as to your best destinations on your sailing itinerary. With their local knowledge, even if you're an experienced sailor you can enjoy a perfect yacht charter holiday.

One of the advantages of a crewed yacht charter sailing vacation on crewed yachts is that you can go longer distances from the yacht charter base. A longer run to the Virgin Islands or other Leeward island is possible on an English Harbour crewed catamaran charter.

As to you? You can just enjoy the breezes and views on your luxury catamaran, or if you fancy learning a bit about sailing, help the skipper or crew to get the boat from A-B.

On your English Harbour crewed catamaran charter or bareboat charter you can explore Antigua and even as far as St Vincent in the Windward Islands. Here we suggest a 7 day sailing trip and a 14 day yacht charter holiday on your charter yacht:

7 Days - Round Antigua: Stopping at various beaches, snorkeling over a coral reef and enjoying the beauty of the island is the name of the game here. Taking your time, head east-about, pausing at Freetown and then Devil's Bridge National Park on the eastern coast. Take an afternoon on Great Bird Island and then moor off Long Island for the evening. St John's will be your next destination and then the next day drop by Deep Bay Beach. Jolly Harbour next and then return to the charter base at English Harbour.

14 Days - Windward Islands: This perhaps better done as part of an Antigua crewed yacht charter. Initially sailing to the French Antilles islands of Guadeloupe, Dominica and Martinique you will then reach Rodney Bay on St Lucia. Head south to Marigot Bay on St Lucia and then on to Kingstown on St Vincent. Here you have a choice - island hop through the Grenadines as far as the Tobago Cays or back through the Windward Islands to explore more of the islands you have seen already? The choice is yours on a sailing holiday with Borrow a Boat!

Do You Need A Sailing License To Charter A Catamaran In English Harbour?

If you are on a skippered catamaran charter you do not need a license to sail out of English Harbour Town, you can just turn up at the marina and go.

You do need a sailing license if you are on a bareboat catamaran charter and in some countries such as Greece a day skipper or ICC may not be enough for boats over 45 feet in length, you will need to check with the charter agent but here are some examples of typical sailing qualifications that will allow you to charter in most countries:

International Certificate of Competence: This is issued on request by your European sailing authority and you should automatically qualify with certain national sailing qualifications.

RYA Qualifications: If you have the following qualifications you will typically be able to take a bareboat charter out of English Harbour (but it is worth checking as per above), these include Day Skipper (sail or motor endorsement), Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster.

American Sailing Association (ASA): The ASA 104 Bareboat certificate is commonly accepted but also check as per above

US Sailing : The International Proficiency Certificate is widely accepted and The Bareboat Cruising Certificate is also accepted in many cases.

Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool in the evenings.

Nelson’s Dockyard Marina is probably the prettiest piece of living History in the Caribbean today.  Once the base for Admiral Horatio Nelson’s fleet in the 18th century and now a busy destination for Super yachts and Cruisers alike.  With its numerous shops and businesses your stay in the Dockyard is sure to be rewarding.

Antigua Yacht Club Marina is situated in Falmouth Harbour and is a full service marina ideally located for all the services in the English & Falmouth Harbours and historic Nelson’s Dockyard.  There are several shops & services at the marina including a duty-free chandlery, restaurant, supermarket, coffee shops, bookstore, Internet, boutiques, cafes, nearby bank and more.

Boats drawing up to 18 feet are able to be accommodated stern to and all berths have water, cable T.V. and electricity.  Ice is available and rental cars and taxis can be arranged.  Checkout time is 12 noon.  Slips occupied after noon will be charged for the day.

Falmouth Harbour Marina is located on the English Harbour main road and has been specifically built to cater to Mega-yachts, with dockage for vessels up to 330′ with a draft of up to 20′ both stern-to and alongside.  This impressive marina has been specifically built to cater to mega-yachts as well as smaller cruising yachts.  Yachts up to 330 feet in length can be catered for stern-to.

The easy approach for berthing and the wide concrete docks are much appreciated by yacht skippers and crew.  There is also very good access to the docks for vehicles of most sizes.

Falmouth Harbour Marina office is run by experienced and friendly staff well versed in marina business and yachting needs.  Recent changes to security has made Falmouth Harbour Marina even more safe and comfortable for visiting yachtsmen and women.  With its central location Falmouth Harbour Marina is convenient to all local amenities and only a short walk from the historic and beautiful Nelson’s Dockyard.

Jolly Harbour Marina   and Boatyard  is located on the sheltered west coast and is the easiest port of entry when approaching Antigua from St. Martin and islands to the North.

Access is simple and lit channel markers guide you into the harbour. There are thirteen sheltered moorings and a 155 slip marina providing secure berths on four fully serviced concrete docks. We also have dedicated docks to accommodate larger vessels up to 200 feet.

With 24 hour security and CCTV it is an ideal place to leave your yacht. Duty-free fuel is available. For convenience Customs & Immigration clearance is on site.

In the boatyard the 75 ton Marine Travelift with boat hoist, sailboat extension and mast crane provides the best handling service available. The boatyard offers a concreted short-term working area and long-term secure storage on stands or in cradles. There is a covered 56 space dinghy store, separate mast stands, sail store, outboard store and secure lockers.

You are welcome to work on your own boats, and there is an excellent selection of technical services and support trades located within the yard as well.

Budget Marine Chandlery is on site, only a two minute walk from the dock and there are several resort amenities available including a large supermarket, ATMs, many restaurants and bars, golf course, car/golf-cart rental, taxis, tennis and squash court and swimming pool.

The Catamaran Marina is Falmouth’s family run, friendly, marina quietly located at the north end of Falmouth Harbour with the benefit of a chandlery, duty free fuel, two restaurants, hotel and parking. Antigua Slipway claims to be the most complete boatyard in the Caribbean with haul out facilities of up to 200 tons plus a fuel dock and chandlery, two restaurants and an hotel. Storage ashore is available with welded cradles and tie down straps.

North Sound Marina is located on the north of Antigua, North Sound Marina is close to the international airport and the city of St. John’s where shopping, supermarkets, banks and all the normal services usually available in a capital city can be found. There are some local shopping facilities and a fish market in nearby Parham, formerly Antigua’s primary port. North Sound Marina is the most modern marine facility in Antigua. Originally built as a private boatyard for a wealthy yacht owner, the dock, yard and ancillary buildings were constructed regardless of cost.

In 2011 the facility became available for public use and the boat storage shed and a large portion of the yard came under the control of North Sound Marine Services. Since that time, North Sound Marine Services have expanded the facilities and there are moves to bring other marine businesses onto the site including a chandlery.

Entry by sea is simple. There is a channel marked by on each side by two red balls just off Maiden Island and is easy to find but should only be used daylight conditions unless very familiar with the channel.

Shell Beach Marina is located on the north side of the island almost adjacent to the airport.  It is best suited to motor boats and has lifts attached to the pontoons.  Small sailing craft can also be accommodated.  Fuel, water, chandlery, 25 ton travel hoist storage facilities and repairs are available.  This quiet, small marina, set in classic Caribbean scenery, has a lot to offer boat users with it’s easy access to the Atlantic shores of Antigua.

Parham Harbour is essentially a fishing port on the north east corner of the island but it does have a Customs and Immigration post and is a Port of Entry.  Dockage facilities are limited and may require rafting alongside a fishing vessel.  Fuel and water is available along with limited provisioning. Fresh fish from the quay side fish market can be a bonus.  There is plentiful anchoring within the harbour which, although once Antigua’s main port, is now little used.

St. John’s Dock is situated at the end of Redcliffe Quay and has a board walk facing the sea with a variety of shops fronting onto it.  Convenient for lunch in town or that shopping trip.  Short term berthing is free although longer term contracts are available.  The location is quite picturesque but can become crowded when cruise liners are in harbour.
