' Sirena'  is a beautiful well-cared for example of a very popular Mason 44 Cutter. She's a serious blue water cruising vessel with convertible cutter rig, full keel, powerful rudder and a feathering prop that is well protected in an aperture.  

Designed by Al Mason and built at the TaShing yard (the same yard which builds the Nordhavn trawlers) the hull is solid glass and heavily reinforced. She is fast, sea kindly and comfortable with two Cabins, full galley and one head with a stall shower.

The Mason 44, 'Sirena', is set up for world cruising, available for viewing at the Port Charlotte Boat Yard and the owner in motivated.

'Sirena' sleeps up to six in two private staterooms and a Pilot berth the main salon. Also 6'3" headroom throughout . 

FORWARD STATEROOM :  There is standing headroom and a custom-built double bed to port, an upholstered seat, plentiful drawers and lockers (some cedar lined), an overhead hatch and  two opening ports for excellent ventilation, 120VAC outlets and reading lights. Access to a huge chain locker forward.  

The Head is aft to port and features marble countertop, stainless sink, pressure hot and cold water, foot activated water pump, a mirrored vanity. The large, home-sized manual toilet is fitted with a "Y" valve for offshore discharge. In addition, macerator pump for offshore discharge from holding tank.  There is a separate shower room with seat.  Plentiful linen and toiletry lockers.   Across from the head is a large hanging locker .'

MAIN SALON :  The main salon features a U-shaped settee with teak dining table.  Across is a full-length settee/ convertible to pilot berth There are outboard lockers with beautiful louvered teak doors both port and starboard, a large cedar hanging locker, a wet locker, with more storage under and behind the settee and dinette.  On the starboard side, 'Sirena' has a settee berth in which the seat back can be raised to create a second single sea berth.  

AFT STATEROOM :  There is standing headroom, a double bed to port, a cedar lined hanging locker, a mirrored vanity with drawers under, several additional storage spaces, an overhead hatch and two opening ports for ventilation, ceiling fan, reading lights, 120VAC outlets and a leeboard.

NAV STATION :  The navigator sits in an upholstered swivel chair in front of a large chart table, substantial chart storage under table, electronics flush mounted within easy reach, master electrical panel is immediately to the right with circuit breakers and monitors for electrical systems, shore power, etc.

The large U shaped galley is next aft to port, with a custom, single deep stainless steel sink, three burner propane stove with oven, plus refrigeration and freezer with access both from the countertop. The galley and galley storage areas have been very nicely detailed with custom refrigerator shelves that have been sized to fit standard size plastic bottles, beer and soda bottles/cans, a custom spice rack, custom racks for mugs and glasses, a table drawer fitted for standard utensils, custom knife rack. the galley shelves have been sized and fitted for standard yacht dishes.

The lines of a Mason 44 are “classic and timeless” – her well documented sea kindly motion offers effortless blue water cruising. 180 Mason 43 and 44 were built – long keel with solid GRP hull construction makes a ‘bullet proof’ go anywhere sailing vessel. This example was imported into the UK in 2013 by the current owner with full UK VAT paid and CE certification in place. A  MAJOR  rebuild and refit included, new engine, generator, new electrical wiring, heating, hull paint, teak rub rails, refrigeration.  More recent upgrades include a bow thruster, Raymarine, Force 10 cooker, gas pipes.  In 2019 she had new standing rigging, new boom to suit a conventional slab reef main, new sails (main, yankee & staysail in Hydranet).  Also new batteries in 2023. ‘Lyra May’ has never had teak decks!  So…………she is quite special. The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
• LOA: Length overall in feet
• Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

The Mason 44 is a heavy sailboat which is a reasonably good performer. It is reasonably stable / stiff and has an excellent righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a heavy bluewater cruising boat. The fuel capacity is good. There is an excellent water supply range.

Mason 44’s had a good long production run and earned a great following with many of them making circumnavigations. They are supported by an active owners group and remain in good demand today. TAIKO is in extraordinary condition and represents the finest craftmanship to come out of Ta Shing in the late 80’s.

When it comes to classic offshore cruising boats, one would be hard pressed to think of a more beautiful yacht than the Mason 44. A timeless design, TAIKO is well equipped to carry her new owners around the world. Continuously updated and maintained, TAIKO features fiberglass decks with impressive, teak accents. She has all the ergonomic cockpit improvements of the Mason 44.

These safe, strong, fast and able craft are suitable for any waters in the world. The solid fibreglass hull is heavily reinforced and will protect you whatever may happen or wherever you may want to go. This is a boat for sailing! The keel stepped rig, fit with inner forestay, head stay and in-mast electric furler, all controlled from a deep cockpit set well aft, make sailing in any conditions not only safe, but dry, which equals fun! Great ventilation through dorades, hatches and portlights which all open and also dog securely shut plus a plush interior with well found seaberths for four combine to provide comfort un-parallel on many offshore sailing boats this size.

Below, you will be amazed by the craftsmanship and joinery. The warm & well-maintained teak interior, accented by the teak & holly cabin sole highlight the well thought out cabin. There are two private berths, one in the forepeak, one aft of the galley to port.

Starting forward is the main cabin featuring offset double berth to port, small dressing seat with storage under. There are storage drawers under the berth and additional storage in shelving over a large hanging locker to starboard.

Aft and to port is the head, vanity with stainless sink, and Corian countertop. Separate, large stall shower compartment and good stowage. Opposite to starboard is a hanging locker where the air condition unit is located. Storage throughout this boat is excellent!

Further aft is the main salon with U-shaped settee to port and straight settee to starboard There is storage behind the seat backs and in lockers and shelves above the seat backs. All port holes and hatches have screens.

Aft of the starboard settee is the navigation station equipped with full electronics, electrical distribution panel, flip up chart table, drawers and swing out navigators? stool. Galley is located across from the nav station.

Moving to starboard aft is a hanging lockers and to port is the aft cabin featuring large double comfortable berth outboard with several large storage drawers underneath, a four-drawer dresser, lined hanging locker and bookshelf plus shelf above the berth for storage.

MASON 44’s are equipped with a deluxe custom P.A.E. electrical panel and battery system. The engine starting battery and house batteries are recharged from the engine alternator or a Victron MultiPlus Inverter/charger. Battery conditions and all inverter functions are monitored with a Victron Color Control GX panel and Victron BMV-712, or remotely via the Victron mobile. The engine starting battery and house batteries are isolated so the engine can always be started, even if the house batteries are totally discharged.

The MASON 44 is fitted with the finest spars and standing rigging available. Masts and booms are of extruded aluminum and painted with Impron linear polyurethane paint. This finish is extremely durable and should give years of protection to the spar.

All standing rigging has been recently replaced and is U.S. manufactured 1 X 19 stainless steel wire. Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

The boat can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 1.95 - 2.05 meter (6.40 - 6.70 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.5 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Mason 44 is about 240 kg/cm, alternatively 1348 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 240 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1348 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Hundreds for people are expected to gather for the club’s annual festival to showcase a wide-variety of dragon boat races, food, and Asian-themed crafts and entertainment. “Oh, it looks great. The weather’s going to be perfect. I couldn’t ask for a better day for a Dragon Boat Festival,” said team manager Kathy Wheeler. Wheeler told Western Mass News what participants and spectators can expect during this event. “The Asian piece of that, they’re going to have the Taiko drummers. We’re going to have some dancers and it’s just going to be a fun event for everybody to come. I mean, you don’t have to be participating. It’s open to everybody,” Wheeler explained.
