Monaco Yacht Show 2023: The Largest Yachts on Display

By Frances Flannagan

The iconic Monaco Yacht Show is set to return for its 32nd edition this September; an exceptional industry-wide annual event that exudes unparalleled grandeur and status. To match the magnificent nature of this event, it is no surprise that some of the world’s most spectacular superyachts, both new and old, look to the show as the very best industry stage. We take a look at the five largest vessels on display for its 2023 edition.

97.2m  CARINTHIA VII

On display with:  Lürssen  and Fraser

CARINTHIA VII is a 97.2m motor yacht built by Lürssen Yachts in 2002. With exterior lines and interior design penned by Tim Heywood, she is a vessel that boasts unmatched timelessness. Refitted in 2023, she has a sleek steel hull and aluminium superstructure, with a draft of 4.8m and a beam of 15.95m.

Ranking 68th on Superyachts.com’s Top 100 largest yachts list, she is a highly impressive vessel, able to accommodate up to 12 guests and 15 crew members. She has four MTU 8000 engines, with the ability to reach 25 knots at top speed.

95.2m  KISMET

On display with:  Cecil Wright

Launched in 2014, KISMET is a 95.2m custom motor yacht from Lürssen, featuring exterior design by Espen Oeino and interiors penned by Reymond Langton Design. She has a steel hull and aluminium superstructure with a gross tonnage of 2700 tonnes, a max draft of 3.9 feet and a beam of 13.80 feet.

KISMET is a perfect vessel for performance as well as for leisure, with a top speed of 17 knots and a range of 6000 NM, as well as being fitted with a jacuzzi, helicopter landing pad and beauty salon. These relaxation opportunities and impressive performance capabilities can be enjoyed by up to 16 guests, whilst also able to house 27 crew members. KISMET ranks at 73 on our Top 100 list.

83.5m SAVANNAH

On display with:  Feadship

SAVANNAH represents something new within sustainability in the superyacht industry, widely considered to be one of the first true hybrid motor yachts. This 83.5m yacht is one of the most award-winning Feadships on the water. Not only representing a new phase of evolution with regards to sustainability, SAVANNAH is a masterpiece of innovation through design, with a ‘floating superstructure’ that gives her a recognisable, yet timeless profile.

She was built in 2015, with exterior design by De Voogt Naval Architects and CG Design, who also assisted in the interior styling. The experience on board that is offered to guests is as impressive as the other aspects of her design, with an underwater lounge, cinema, and pool; the ultimate superyacht paradise.

80m LEONA

On display with: Bilgin Yachts

Launched in November 2022, 80m LEONA is the second hull launched from Bilgin Yachts’ Bilgin 263 series. With an eye-catching red hull and gleaming white superstructure, she caught attention from her very first sighting. She has a beam of 12.25m and a draft of 3.5m, with the ability to reach up to 19 knots.

Unique Yacht Design are responsible for her naval architecture and exteriors, boasting exclusive and large spaces on board, making her the ideal entertainment vessel for the 10 guests she can accommodate. Interiors were penned by H2 Yacht Design, with a cinema, gym and sauna being notable amenities on board.

77.74m O’REA

On display with: Golden Yachts

In May of this year, Golden Yachts launched their 77.74m superyacht O’REA. Featuring exterior design by Studio Vafiadis, she is characterised by a powerful profile. Studio Vafiadis and Massari Design collaborated on her interiors; a contemporary design that seamlessly blends indoor and outdoor spaces. Over 250 finishes, materials and precious stones were used to decorate the stunning interior spaces, showing her to be the pinnacle of luxury.

The ultimate relaxation escape, O’REA has an expansive swimming pool, a health bar and a spa and sauna. She is powered by twin Caterpillar engines and is equipped with a Dynamic Positioning System, meaning that she can hold place without dropping anchor.

We for one are extremely excited to see this lineup, alongside numerous other yachts at the show this year. The Monaco Yacht Show will be taking place from the 27th to the 30th September.

"I am very proud that after building Carinthia VII, we have now been able to participate in her new lease on life with an extensive refit." Peter Lürssen, Managing Partner, Lürssen

two10 meyer yachts concept

TWO10: 210m concept revealed by Meyer Yachts at Monaco Yacht Show

Meyer Yachts, the superyacht division of the Meyer Werft shipyard, has revealed a new 210 metre superyacht concept named TWO10 at the Monaco Yacht Show.

A slender profile designed by the in-house team at Meyer Yachts disguises the yacht's sheer size and serves as inspiration to prospective owners looking for their next build.

Highlights include a helipad on the bow that doubles as a tennis court, with a fine-meshed net that can be set up when in play, and a capacious beach club that extends over two decks with a suspended infinity pool. A bar can be found below a gallery-style glass balcony with sofas and coffee tables.

Elsewhere, at the stern of the TWO10, guests can look through the largest pane of glass ever installed on a yacht.

Speaking at the show, Lars Kruse, head of sales at Meyer Yachts, said: "The TWO10 illustrates the capacities of the Meyer Group in every respect and we are currently very satisfied with the response to our yachting activities."

The TWO10 concept is the second design to come from the shipyard after it revealed the 150 metre ONE50 concept at the Monaco Yacht Show last year.

The superyacht division of the German shipyard, which traditionally builds some of the largest cruise ships in the world, was launched a year ago. With its roots in the cruising sector, Meyer Group has the facilities to build yachts up to 500 metres in length and will position itself at the top end of the market with the aim to build the "world's largest and greenest mega yachts."

F1 Emilia-Romagna GP takeaways: Piastri on the verge, Pérez on the back foot

Yuki Tsunoda - Oscar Piastri - Alex Albon

To steal a phrase from Christian Horner, the 2024 Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix was “a race of two halves.”

As Max Verstappen did his usual thing — take pole, deliver a clean start, get out of DRS range, build a seemingly untouchable lead — we jotted down notes like, “Max locks it back in after his Miami loss,” and “McLaren’s improving but isn’t there yet.”

Then came the second stint. Verstappen’s RB20 didn’t play well with the hard tires — “It was like driving on ice,” he said — while Norris locked in and started biting whole chunks out of the six seconds separating him from P1. The McLaren driver applied the kind of pressure Verstappen has rarely faced in his run of dominance, to the point where a single error would have cost the Dutchman the win. Ultimately, the margin of victory was just 0.725 seconds.

The action down the grid wasn’t too shabby, either. Oscar Piastri added to his case for being F1 ’s next big thing. Yuki Tsunoda added to his case for being RB’s top driver. And in the not-so-hot category, Williams knocked itself out of contention on Sunday, while Sergio Pérez endured the kind of tough weekend we saw too often last year.

So before we yacht off to Monaco next weekend, here’s what we learned from F1’s return to Imola.

Piastri’s on the verge of something great

In a two-race stretch where everyone’s been talking about Norris — which, fair, he took his maiden F1 win in Miami and nearly nicked the win of Verstappen at Imola —it’s easy to lose sight of his teammate. Don’t do that. Had it not been for a three-place grid drop for impeding Kevin Magnussen in yesterday’s Q1, Piastri would have started today’s race on the front row. He posted a Q3 time of 1:15.940, quicker than Norris’ 1:15.915 and just off Verstappen’s 1:15.762.

After today’s GP, Piastri mused about what could have been. “I felt like my start was really good,” he said, to the point where he had to let off to avoid rear-ending Leclerc. If he’d done that from the front row, perhaps he could have taken the lead off Verstappen. “Clearly, starting from second would have made a big difference,” he said.

All of which is to say, give Norris all the credit he’s due, but keep an eye on his sophomore teammate. Piastri’s been knocking on the door for a while now, and it won’t take much longer for him to burst through.

Nearly a ripper but still a goodun. Great Papaya weekend pic.twitter.com/pZZSpEuZkE — Oscar Piastri (@OscarPiastri) May 19, 2024

Unforced errors hold Williams back

Full disclosure: In our pre-season predictions , I picked Alex Albon for a surprise podium and Williams as the most improved team, saying: “I don’t expect Williams to do better than P7 in the constructors’ standings in 2024. But I do think the team will strengthen its grip on its position as best of the rest. As James Vowles enters his sophomore year as team principal and Logan Sargeant looks to improve on a rough rookie season, I expect Williams to be more consistently in the hunt for points.”

Woe is me: We’re through seven race weekends now, including two sprints, and Williams has nary a point. Moreover, the things that have held them back are largely operational. Not having a third chassis to spare, forcing team principal James Vowles to pull Logan Sargeant out of the Australian Grand Prix after Albon crashed during a practice session. And at Imola, not properly bolting a wheel onto Albon’s car during an early pit stop. The resulting necessary second stop and the 10-second penalty for the unsafe release detonated the Thai driver’s race.

Since taking over the team at the start of 2023, Vowles has been on an overhauling mission . “If we don’t start to do leaps — I don’t mean small, one-percent changes, I mean leaps forward — we’re not going to be where we want to be,” he said last month. Albon has committed to the team for the next few years, and given Logan Sargeant’s continued uninspiring performance, Williams will likely be bringing in a new driver sooner rather than later.

But those big leaps won’t take it anywhere if the team can’t execute the little things cleanly.

A familiarly rough weekend for Checo

It was after Miami last season that Pérez’s season began to diverge from his teammate’s historic title run. When the calendar turned to the European tracks, Pérez began a summer-long run of mistakes here and there that cost him chances to share podiums with Verstappen. You could point to Pérez’s RB19 suspended by a crane during practice at Monaco as the point where the tone of his season changed.

Before Round 7 at Monaco, Pérez’s average starting position was 7.8, and his average finish was 4.5. After Monaco, though that average finish improved to 4.2, his average grid start ballooned to 8.3. In other words, he made himself work much harder for finishes worthy of the car beneath his feet.

go-deeper

Red Bull built a peerless F1 season with two drivers on divergent paths

I bring all this up because the 2024 Emilia-Romagna GP was the first weekend this year that brought that “Summer of 2023” Checo to mind. Both Red Bull drivers struggled with balance, grip and overall setup all weekend. But Verstappen delivered a pole position, while Pérez didn’t make it out of Q2. Pérez lost time in the first two chicanes on his final push lap and qualified P11.

“The podium is a long way from that grid place, particularly with very fast McLarens and Ferraris,” Red Bull boss Christian Horner said on Saturday. “So, it’s going to be a tough race tomorrow.”

Indeed. Pérez started strong on hard tires but didn’t show as much fight with the Ferraris and McLarens as Verstappen did against Norris in the final laps (when he was on hards). As pit stops were sorted out, Norris, Piastri, and Carlos Sainz made quick work of the Red Bull as they charged to the front. Pérez finally pitted on Lap 38 and fought back to P8 (his worst result of the season) seven seconds behind George Russell ahead, who had stopped twice.

“This track is not made for Formula 1, in terms of races,” Pérez said. “When we qualified P11, our weekend was over.”

It all amounted to a frustrating weekend for Pérez, and you can hear it in his quote. Imola is regarded as one of the most challenging circuits to overtake on (only behind Monaco). So, yes, it’s fair to say that the qualifying mistake left a lot of points on the table. As Norris and McLaren have shown in the previous two races, Red Bull’s margin for error in 2024 is much finer than last year. If another summer of waning confidence is ahead for Pérez, it could make the constructors’ championship interesting.

Yuki Tsunoda reinforces his claim as RB’s top driver

Both RB drivers are driving for a new contract in 2025 — and, with Pérez on an expiring deal at Red Bull, potentially a seat next to Verstappen. So far, it hasn’t been much of a contest, as Tsunoda has consistently outperformed Ricciardo in the RB. After Tsunoda’s terrific weekend in Imola, calling it a competition seems generous.

To be fair, both drivers raised eyebrows by qualifying in the top 10 on Saturday. But in the grand prix, it was once again Tsunoda battling for points in RB’s tough backmarker battle with Haas.

Tsunoda and RB demonstrated strategic prowess by quickly identifying Nico Hülkenberg as the man they were racing and executing a flawless pit strategy to finish ahead. Tsunoda’s well-timed pit on Lap 13 and his consistent pace allowed him to overtake the Haas driver when he pitted a lap later. This tactical victory earned RB a point and left Haas pointless — increasing RB’s lead over Haas for sixth in the constructors’ championship to 13 points.

Tsunoda even factored into the barnstorming finish. On Lap 56, Verstappen voiced his frustration that the Japanese driver didn’t get out of his way quickly enough while he tried to lose Norris through lapped traffic. It’s another race where Tsunoda’s name is on many lips, but let’s not forget about Ricciardo. While his performance may not have stood out in this race, his track record at Monaco (85 points, four podiums, and one win in 11 tries) suggests he could impress next weekend.

  • Verstappen’s start-to-win ratio is now 30.7 percent, higher than anyone else on the grid (Hamilton’s is 30.4 percent). He passed Kimi Raikkonen for sixth all-time with his win on Sunday.
  • We can be honest, yeah? Until Norris made a go of it late, that race was a bit of a snooze. In a season that’s featured plenty of safety cars and changes in momentum, this event-free race was starting to feel like an outlier. Good thing that changed.
  • Another podium for Charles Leclerc. That’s four trips to the rostrum for the Ferrari driver in seven races this season and seven in his last 11 grands prix. Whatever lull he was in early last season seems to have evaporated.
  • That was the first Imola podium for a Ferrari driver since Michael Schumacher in 2006. It was hard to ignore the chanting tifosi during Max Verstappen’s post-race podium interview.
  • Don’t look now, but Nico Hülkenberg hasn’t finished lower than P11 all season.
  • On to Monaco, then.
