Changi Sailing Club

32 Netheravon Rd, Singapore 508508

An idyllic sailing paradise tucked away in Changi, the Changi Sailing Club (CSC) was first built in 1936 as the Changi Garrison Yacht Club (CGYC). The idea of constructing the club was borne out of Captain Sterling Wilkinson, Royal Signals, from the British Army.

In the late 1930s to early 1940s, regular races between CGYC, Royal Air Force Seletar and Royal Navy were held in the Straits of Johor. Before dinghies were introduced to the club, local sail boats such as koleks and jongs were used for sailing.

When World War II broke out, the club’s activities were ceased. It had its last meeting on 1 March 1942 before club members were held captive. Three British military personnel attempted to escape from Singapore by CGYC’s dinghy named Goldeneye. However, they were stopped two weeks later by a Japanese cruiser in the Sunday Straits, between the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra. The club was later revived in 1947, after the war.

When the British military withdrew from Singapore in 1971, the club was handed over to the National Sports Promotion Board (NSPB). As the board saw an increased interest in water sports in the 1980s, new amenities and buildings were introduced to meet these growing demands. The original pier constructed in 1938 was also relocated in 1989 to the other side of the boat ramp to enable sailing during the Northeast Monsoon period.

The buildings that make up the club today are mainly constructed in the 1980s and features the modern tropical architectural style. This architectural style consists of design elements such as steep gradients and generous eaves, that shelter the main buildings from tropical rain and sunlight. The buildings’ design also encouraged cross-ventilation and allowed natural lighting into the indoor spaces.

Over the years, the club has played a central role in propelling Singapore’s place in regional sporting history. Siew Shar Her, a sailor from the CSC, did Singapore proud at several regional and international sailing competitions. Other notable sailors who trained at the club include Benedict Tan and Teo Wee Chin.

Today, the club offers sailing programmes and hosts an annual Ambassadors Cup—a social sailing competition which gathers Ambassadors from different countries for a day of sailing and revelry by the glistening waters of the Changi coastal sea.

SINGAPORE: Fancy taking a dip in an infinity pool that offers a panoramic view of Changi Airport's runway?

Guests will be able to do so when Hotel Indigo Changi Airport opens by 2028 at Terminal 2, Changi Airport Group (CAG) and real estate group OUE Limited said on Friday (Apr 26).

The 255-room, "zero-energy" hotel, whose development and lease tender was awarded to OUE, will complement the airport's two other hotels - YOTELAIR  and Crowne Plaza Changi Airport.

Hotel Indigo Changi Airport’s design will be based on a “floating forest”, with rainforest and hanging plants stretching over seven storeys.

Aside from the infinity pool, which also overlooks the airport boulevard and has a view of the skyline, guests can lounge about at the rooftop day club or have drinks at the bar.

Sustainability will be at its core and the new hotel aims to achieve "operational energy neutrality" by incorporating features like solar panels, hybrid cooling systems, naturally ventilated corridors and rainwater-harvesting technology.

They are aimed at reducing environmental impact while enhancing overall guest comfort and well-being, said CAG.

These features are also in line with the group's sustainability drive to mitigate carbon emissions, as part of Singapore’s efforts to decarbonise its aviation sector .

Changi Airport will, in 2025, see the completion of the largest single-site solar panel system in Singapore , while it aims to have all new light vehicles such vans and minibuses be electric by then.

TOUTED AS SINGAPORE'S FIRST "ZERO-ENERGY" HOTEL

“The hotel concept proposed by OUE was the most compelling and promises to be the first zero-energy hotel in Singapore, and possibly the first for an airport hotel in the world,” said CAG CEO Lee Seow Hiang.

“With travel demand continuing to soar and passenger traffic growing beyond pre-COVID levels, the new hotel will elevate the hospitality offerings at Changi Airport. It will serve our visitors well with its differentiated facilities and convenient access to T2.”

changi yacht club singapore

CAG added Singapore’s tourism sector has seen a rebound from the COVID-19 pandemic and is expected to continue to attract visitors as the country remains a key destination for leisure and events.

“In 2023, Singapore visitor arrivals surged 115 per cent to 13.6 million from 6.3 million the year before, with tourism receipts estimated to be between S$24.5 billion and S$26 billion,” said the group.

“The strong tourism recovery is expected to continue, with both international visitor arrivals and tourism receipts to climb further in 2024, according to the Singapore Tourism Board.”

The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) also pointed out on Friday that  hotel occupancies rose to 80 per cent in the first two months of the year, compared with 77 per cent in the previous quarter.

The impact of the Coldplay and Taylor Swift concerts in the first quarter of 2024 is, however, likely temporary in nature, and tourism-related activity should normalise after the “concert-induced windfall”, it added.

AirBridgeCargo Debuts at Singapore Changi Airport with Direct Freighter Flights from Moscow

AirBridgeCargo Debuts at Singapore Changi Airport with Direct Freighter Flights from Moscow

Changi  Airport  Group (CAG) welcomes AirBridgeCargo Airlines (ABC) to Singapore Changi Airport, with its inaugural flight from Moscow, Russia, scheduled to arrive tonight. The international freighter carrier, which is part of Russia-based Volga-Dnepr Group, is launching twice-weekly Moscow-Singapore-Hong Kong-Moscow services with a Boeing 747-8F  aircraft . ABC's new services to Singapore establish Moscow as a new freighter city link for Changi Airport, and strengthen Changi Airport's connectivity to Russia and beyond.

The new dedicated cargo services to Singapore will facilitate the movement of cross-border shipments and enhance the country's product offerings for its customers in Asia. With the addition of Singapore, which is AirBridgeCargo's ninth online station in Asia, the airline will now provide over 500 weekly delivery solutions from the region, all with a delivery time of below 48 hours including handling procedures. The airline already has a diverse business portfolio in the region, connecting clients in China, Japan, South Korea and Vietnam with its cargo gateways in Europe, the U.S. and Russia.

Robert van de Weg, ABC's Senior Vice President, Sales & Marketing, said: "The ABC team is pleased to start connecting customers in Europe, the U.S. and Singapore with dedicated freighter services to Changi Airport. With the addition of this route, ABC is continuing its strategy to provide customers with better access to point-to-point deliveries within its global route network, while providing them with on-time, reliable and high quality service levels. Singapore, via ABC's Moscow hub, will be directly connected to gateways like Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Milan without trucking. Asia is a vitally important market for AirBridgeCargo and we look forward to further growth in this dynamic region."

CAG's Assistant Vice President for Cargo & Logistics Development, James Fong, added: "This new service by AirBridgeCargo marks a significant milestone for Changi Airport as it opens up new cargo opportunities between Singapore and Russia. Logistics players, who were previously limited by capacity constraints between Singapore and Russia, now have a direct option to transport large freight shipments as well as general cargoes between the two countries. The enhanced air connectivity will foster further trade between both countries which is already growing steadily."

Changi Airport is one of the world's busiest cargo hubs. In the first half of 2015, cargo throughput at Changi Airport reached 912,300 tonnes. During this period, 1,034 tonnes of cargo was handled between Singapore and Russia. Between 2010 and 2014, air cargo volumes between Singapore and Russia grew by an average growth rate of 16% annually.
