The superyacht offices for business on board

From Luminosity 's conference room to Neninka 's celestial study, we take a look at some of the swankiest offices afloat for those who are lucky enough to be 'WFY' (working from yacht) this past year.

At one end of the owner's deck lies an office-cum-conference room that’s almost equal in size to the master cabin. “This is a serious working office and has everything to back that up,” says design Zaniz Jakubowski, including an adjacent office for the PA and a dayhead. Decoratively, the theme of the space is time. “The striations in the [circular marble floor panel] are to do with the clock, punctuated by materials such as lapis lazuli and malachite, to remind oneself that time is precious,” says Jakubowski. The polished stainless-steel desk, meanwhile, is inspired by a watch strap, and behind it, limed oak panelling is inspired by Mondrian, “to bring some rhythm into the scheme.”

The main deck owner's office in 46 metre Bilgin motor yacht Gialoa-Lu serves dual purposes. The room is certainly a formal office ideal for conducting serious business – with a desk that takes in sea views out of large windows. But per her owners' request, the space also morphs into a private spot for watching movies or playing video games. A comfortable couch opposite the desk faces the concave wall, which hosts a special curved TV. Once the blinds are lowered, the office becomes a mini-cinema, the perfect hideaway for this media-loving family who built Gialoa-Lu .

The owner’s office on board Neninka (previously Aurora Borealis ) contrasts a custom silk hand-tufted carpet with walls in masculine dark brown satin oak. The most prominent feature is the one-of-a-kind marquetry artwork commissioned by Winch Design depicting a celestial scene, adorned with mother-of-pearl, shell and gold leaf.

Suerte — the stylish 69 metre from Italian yard Tankoa Yachts  — has a maximum cruising range of 5,000 nautical miles at 12 knots, and the excellent office means that the owner can choose to stay on board during long passages and still get plenty of work done. This area is separated from the suite by rotating foils inside a glass wall, which protect privacy when it is wanted and open up to give a more airy feeling, while always letting in light.

Blue II features two master suites - one for each co-owner - and each comes with its own perks. The forward suite sits adjacent to the wellness area on board, comprised of a sauna, hammam and a gym/massage room. The second suite on the upper deck benefits from 180-degree views across the bow and is flooded with natural light thanks to a number of skylights. The entry area contains a surprise spiral staircase that leads to a private office behind the bridge above. 

Yachts for charter

Here comes the sun.

The owner's office on board the 87 metre Amels motor yacht Here Comes the Sun has a fixed balcony with the desk positioned with views of the seascape as it passes by. The space is styled by British studio Winch Design using warm natural oak with an eel skin feature wall behind the bookshelves and pony skin on the ceiling.

The interior of Ace was designed in the style of a contemporary grand hotel, inspired by the glamourous escapes of the Hôtel Hermitage Monte-Carlo or Le Bristol Paris. Most of the spaces on board are kept light and fresh with cream paneling, ivory silk and pearlescent details. But some areas, such as the owner's study, are deliberately moody with an atmospheric “jewellery box” feel.

Offices on board are an essential part of any proper superyacht, allowing owners to catch up with business affairs while still afloat. The study on this 46 metre from Wider Yachts can be shut off from the owner’s suite at the touch of a button via a soundproof sliding door — a fitting feature on board this super-quiet Italian superyacht .

The massive owner’s deck on 101.5 metre Symphony — one of the best Feadship superyachts of all time — doesn’t just have his and hers bathrooms, there are his and hers offices too, with incredible floor-to-ceiling windows for great views out to sea. The interior décor on the Dutch yard's flagship was created by Francois Zuretti .

Launched in 2013, the 62.4 metre Amels superyacht Event was a top secret project until 2015 when she was put up for sale and her Nuvolari Lenard interior could be revealed for the first time. One of the star attractions is the master suite with its study-cum-office area. High-gloss surfaces, dark leather and pale woodwork create a strong sense of contrast, while a pop-up television provides welcome distraction when the time for work is over.

Another Russian exodus: Many who fled to Turkey move on again

Tens of thousands of Russians who fled to Turkey after Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine have moved on to other countries in the last year, squeezed by residency issues and soaring costs, according to data and interviews, including with nine Russian citizens.

When the war began in February 2022, Turkey, Russia’s Black Sea neighbor and a NATO member, emerged as a magnet for Russians, especially its largest city Istanbul and the Mediterranean resort of Antalya.

Some of them had opposed the invasion, others were trying to shield themselves and their businesses from a wave of Western sanctions imposed on Moscow, including travel bans on Russians to much of Europe. Some men feared being drafted into the army.

But this month, the number of Russians with Turkish resident permits fell to 96,000, down by more than a third from 154,000 at the end of 2022, official data shows.

Nine Russian citizens who spoke to Reuters said they and others had left partly due to struggles to get residence permits since early 2023. Many have headed to Serbia and Montenegro, among the few European countries where they are welcome.

Russians are also moving on because of soaring costs – Turkish inflation hit 70% last month – as well as difficulty doing basic banking in Turkey as a result of the sanctions.

“You can’t predict your future in Turkey,” said Dmitri, 46, an IT sector employee who declined to give his surname.

After President Vladimir Putin announced a mobilization in September of 2022 to recruit Russian men to fight in Ukraine, Dmitri left St. Petersburg and reunited with his wife and four-year-old son in Istanbul.

But in January 2023, a text message appeared on his phone saying his residency application was rejected without explanation, he said. Dmitri left Istanbul a month later.

“I had signed a rental contract for one year but had to leave everything behind. We moved to Montenegro because it is economically and politically more stable than Turkey,” he said.

Turkey’s Presidency of Migration Management said all rejected resident-permit applications include a justification in the foreigners’ own language under relevant laws, and that applicants are free to pursue legal remedies.

In an email, it said departures of Russians were not only linked to residency permits.

“Several political, economic and sociocultural factors play a role,” the government agency said.

Turning tide

While the Kremlin has released no data on the wartime exodus, the Danish Refugee Council’s Mixed Migration Centre says some 800,000 Russian citizens relocated abroad since the invasion of Ukraine.

Turkey, which has cordial ties with both Moscow and Kyiv, maintained visa-free travel for Russians after the invasion and did not join the Western sanctions against Russia.

Turkey’s foreign minister at the time, Mevlut Cavusoglu, said Russian oligarchs – and their yachts – were welcome but must abide by international law to do business.

The buzz of Russian conversation increased in parts of Istanbul and Antalya as the newcomers set up or relocated businesses. But that activity has steadily cooled. Trade Registry Gazette data shows the number of companies established with Russian capital fell to 68 in 2023 from 140 in 2022.

Biriz Karacay, professor of political science at Istanbul Commerce University, says Russian migrants are moving to Serbia, Montenegro and even Latin American countries such as Argentina and Brazil.

“Economically, socially, culturally, they feel close to Turkey, but Turkey doesn’t want to have too many foreigners now. Economic challenges also made them suffer in Turkey,” she said.

Kirill Alekseev, 35, a Russian politician who worked at the campaign headquarters of the late opposition leader Alexei Navalny, said he came to Turkey in March 2022 after a criminal investigation was launched against him.

But when a consulting firm told him that obtaining a residence permit would cost $2,000, he decided not to reapply. “It was too expensive to stay in Turkey,” he said.

Instead, Alekseev applied for a German “humanitarian residence permit” and has lived in Nuremberg for a year.

Some wealthier Russians have acquired Turkish citizenship with home purchases of at least $400,000 under a state program, surpassing Iranians and Iraqis as the biggest foreign buyers over the last two years.

But bureaucratic troubles have proven too onerous for many, said Eva Rapoport, 40. She worked for the Ark Project, which helped Russians arriving in Istanbul with free accommodation and legal support, but has also now joined the exodus from Turkey.

“There is no way of knowing if the permit will be extended, or something will change to make the system more hostile to foreigners,” Rapoport said.

Another factor, Rapoport added, is pressure in Turkey on human rights such as freedom of assembly.

“After Navalny was killed, even in Russia people gathered to honor his memory,” she said. “We couldn’t approach the consulate in Istanbul. We traded one authoritarian regime for another.” [Reuters]

FBI seizes superyacht of oligarch with links to Putin

Washington has issued its first order to seize a Russian oligarch’s yacht, sending FBI agents to impound a $90 million vessel in Mallorca.

Federal agents teamed up with Spain’s Civil Guard to take control of the Tango, which has been linked to Viktor Vekselberg, 64, a mining tycoon who is an ally of President Putin.

Vekselberg, who faced questioning by the Mueller investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election, was first sanctioned by the US in 2018 over his Kremlin ties and named again as a target after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He has also been placed on the UK’s sanctions list.

Spanish authorities said that the raid was carried out after a request from the US which has set up a task force called Repo — Russian Elites, Proxies and Oligarchs — to enforce sanctions since the outbreak of the war.

The Civil Guard said it has discovered “a complex financial and partnership scheme” designed to conceal Vekselberg’s ownership of the 78-metre yacht.

Elsewhere in Europe, governments that have seized mega-yachts linked to oligarchs were puzzling over who pays for their upkeep, with Italy considering renting out the vessels.

The Italian tax police seized three yachts and villas worth a total of €900 million (£750 million) and handed the assets over to the state property agency for management. The agency must guarantee the upkeep of the yachts, which can cost thousands of euros a week in crew wages, maintenance and port fees.

Officials are studying a 2007 law that allows assets to be rented out to cover costs, with outstanding expenses to be paid by the owner when the yacht is returned. It is believed that the task could be made easier since some of the yachts are normally rented out when not being used by their oligarch owners.

“The question is, who now would want to rent out an oligarch’s seized yacht?” one government source said.

The greatest challenge is posed by the priciest yacht Italy has seized - the €530 million Sailing Yacht A, owned by the coal magnate Andrey Igorevich Melnichenko.

The vessel is taking up a dry dock spot in Trieste due to be occupied in mid-April by a new cruise ship that has been built locally by the Italian state-owned shipyard Fincantieri. The cruise ship needs to be put in dry dock within days for final checks.

Industry sources said that Fincantieri risks daily fines of €600,000 if it hands over the ship late to the cruise company which has ordered it.

Vessel linked to Abramovich flees ‘sanctions-risk’ marina A 140-metre superyacht thought to be owned by Roman Abramovich has left a marina in Turkey after claims that the UK-listed operator of the port risked violating sanctions by harbouring it (Nadeem Badshah writes).

Solaris, which has a helipad and a swimming pool, left Bodrum Cruise Port yesterday and was anchored in the Aegean Sea last night, according to the tracking service Marine Traffic.

Global Ports Holding, the world’s largest cruise port operator, said on Sunday that it would not take berthing fees from the yacht.

The company insisted it was not guilty of a sanctions breach because the yacht was berthed outside the UK and it had no right to turn away a boat from the Bodrum port, which is owned by the Turkish state. It comes after lawyers told the Financial Times that the company was at risk of violating UK sanctions. Solaris, which was completed last year, is worth $474 million according to the yacht data service VesselsValue.

The superyacht is understood to have 48 cabins, eight decks, an outdoor beach club, a lift, a gym and a sauna.

Another yacht linked to Abramovich, the 163-metre Eclipse, is moored in the Turkish port of Marmaris.

A superyacht berth in a marina can cost £10,000 a day, Michael Biltoo, a partner at the law firm Kennedys, said.

The FT reported last week that Solaris and Eclipse were among a fleet of five yachts linked to Abramovich that together are worth almost $1 billion.

Abramovich, 55, was among a group of Russian oligarchs targeted by UK and EU sanctions last month. The owner of Chelsea Football Club has been playing a role as a mediator in peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow.

Sky News has been speaking to people from across the political spectrum about the announcement today on National Service plans being proposed by the Conservatives.

Paul Goodman, the former editor of the Conservative Home website, says: "Well, this is the start of the election campaign proper.

"I think we're now getting to the point where the two parties will begin to unveil their policies - and I would expect more from the Conservatives this week."

On the policy itself, Mr Goodman suggests there is a lot of support for some form of National Service, and this was researched by a former thinktank director who is now in government.

This suggests it has been "under wraps for some time" as a plan.

Meanwhile, Tom Belger, the editor of Labour List, says the plan is an "unfunded gimmick". 

He adds that the government has had 14 years to come up with ideas.

But he conceded that Labour should not be ruling out a version of the pledge "per se" - but maybe should be "pushing back" on the "fixation of the armed forces".

Rishi Sunak grew up in Southampton and supports the city's football team.

He went to his team's playoff semifinal as they vie for promotion from the Championship.

But he will not be at Wembley today as the Saints take on Leeds United, with the final slot in the Premier League for next year up for grabs.

Instead, it is understood that he will be meeting voters in the South East, the PA news agency has been told.

Sources close to the prime minister said he will still be paying attention to the score of the match, which kicks off at 3pm.

The prime minister appears to have had a belated epiphany about the critical importance of defence - and now even National Service.

It was just four months ago that Rishi Sunak's spokesperson slapped down the outgoing head of the army for advocating the need for civilians to be trained to fight given the dangers of living in what the defence secretary has called "a pre-war world".

General Sir Patrick Sanders had simply been using a speech to state a blunt reality - war and preparing for war is a whole-nation effort as demonstrated daily by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, where Ukrainian citizen soldiers are fighting and dying on the frontline.

Rather than support him, a Downing Street spokesperson at the time said that "hypothetical scenarios" involving possible wars were "not helpful" and ruled out any move towards a conscription model for the military.

Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, the chief of the defence staff, and David Williams, the top civil servant at the Ministry of Defence (MoD), apparently even summoned General Sanders for a dressing down over the remarks.

But the army chief had not been suggesting conscription then - just as the prime minister is not doing so now.

He had simply been talking about the need for civilians to be ready to serve.

Given that context, Mr Sunak's sudden announcement that he would introduce a new form of National Service for 18-year-olds, including the chance to spend 12 months serving in the armed forces, sent eyebrows within the MoD soaring skyward.

"Deeply cynical," was the verdict of one insider.

Another told Sky News: "This is a policy surprise to me. I haven't seen it discussed in the Ministry of Defence."

As every, people from across the spectrum are commenting on the most recent announcements in the general election.

One interesting take comes from Chris Wilkins, who was a strategy director and speechwriter for Theresa May when she was in Downing Street.

Writing on X, he panned the National Service plan - saying that "the cynicism of selling a sop to older voters as some kind of pro young person policy is simply breathtaking".

A former Tory cabinet minister has warned Rishi Sunak he will hand the election to Labour if he makes "any more gaffes".

The senior Conservative told the Telegraph the prime minister needed to sharpen up and show "humility, not arrogance" on the campaign trail.

"We can't afford any more gaffes like the ones he's had, standing in the rain and getting in a muddle with the football," they told the newspaper.

"He's just got to sharpen up, his team has got to sharpen up."

The prime minister launched his campaign by calling an election in the pouring rain on Wednesday, leading him to joke he hadn't caught pneumonia and did not know what state his suit was in.

To make matters worse, protestors disrupted the announcement by blaring the D:Ream's hit single Things Can Only Get Better, widely associated with Labour's 1997 landslide victory.

The next day, Mr Sunak asked workers at a Welsh brewery if they were looking forward to "the football" - even though their team had not qualified for the European Championships.

A visit to the Titanic Quarter in Belfast invited a "sinking ship" comparison with his party's fortunes from a reporter.

And an image taken of him standing beneath his campaign plane's exit sign also drew derision from some commentators.

"We can't afford any more slip-ups, that's just handing it to Starmer," the Conservative minister told the Telegraph.

"He really needs to get out there, all guns blazing, very professionally but also get out and talk to real people, and not staged events. I want humility, not arrogance, and a sense that we're moving forward."

Since Rishi Sunak called the election on Wednesday, pollsters and surveyors have been taking the temperature of public opinion.

One example of this is by YouGov, who asked 2,072 people on Thursday and Friday for their thoughts on the upcoming vote.

They discovered that a greater proportion of people would be "disappointed" or "dismayed" with the prospect of a Conservative victory under Rishi Sunak than a Labour victory under Jeremy Corbyn in 2019.

Some 59% of those quizzed said they would be unhappy with Mr Sunak winning.

In 2019, 52% felt similarly about Mr Corbyn.

And in further bad news for the current prime minister, only 38% of people who voted Tory in 2019 would be happy to see them reelected.

Once again, immigration was the subject of election debate this morning, with James Cleverly claiming Labour plans to scrap the Rwanda scheme were "reckless".

Millions of pounds has been spent on the Rwanda deal without any deportation flights getting off the ground – and Mr Sunak has admitted they won't before the election.

We've since had updated figures on people arriving on small boats, after they surpassed 10,000 this year on Friday.

Another 227 arrived yesterday on four boats, government data shows, bringing the total to 10,397.

Shadow immigration minister Stephen Kinnock has said if Labour was elected the party would "take the action required to tackle this chaos".

Amnesty International warned the figures were a "stark reminder that the government's flagrant attack on the rights to refugees is not only unlawful and immoral, it is ineffective even on its own terms", demanding the prime minister make safe routes available to tackle crossings.

Rachel Reeves, who is Labour's shadow chancellor, has ruled out increasing the two main levies on income.

Speaking to the BBC, she says that everything in her party's manifesto will have an explanation for where the money to pay for it will come from.

Ms Reeves added: "What I want and Keir [Starmer] wants is taxes on working people to be lower and we certainly won't be increasing income tax or national insurance if we win at the election."

The Labour Party has said it will raise some tariffs, with Ms Reeves saying: "We've made those commitments so VAT and business rates on private schools, private equity bosses being taxed properly on their bonuses, an extension of the windfall tax so the energy profits are properly taxed, ensuring non-doms pay their fair share of tax in the country they live in, and also cracking down on tax avoidance – which is costing our economy billions of pounds every year." 

Our political correspondent Tamara Cohen   has been giving her reaction to Nigel Farage's appearance on Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips.

He was challenged by Trevor about his comments about British Muslims, having suggested there's a "growing number" of young people in the UK who don't subscribe to British values.

He pointed to pro-Palestine protests as an example.

Tamara says there will be "a lot of pushback" against Mr Farage's "highly incendiary claims" this morning.

But she says it's also a question for the leadership of his party, Reform.

Mr Farage isn't standing in the general election but has said he will campaign for the party, led by Richard Tice.

Sky News will be asking the leadership if Mr Farage's position is one it agrees with.

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito is embroiled in a second flag controversy in as many weeks, this time over a banner that in recent years has come to symbolize sympathies with the Christian nationalist movement and the false claim that the 2020 presidential election was stolen.

An “Appeal to Heaven” flag was flown last summer outside Alito’s beach vacation home in New Jersey, according to The New York Times, which obtained several images showing it on different dates in July and September 2023. The Times previously reported that an upside down American flag — a sign of distress — had flown outside Alito’s Alexandria, Virginia, home less than two weeks after the violent Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol by supporters of former President Donald Trump.

Some of the rioters carried the inverted American flag or the “Appeal to Heaven” flag, which shows a green pine tree on a white field. The revelations have escalated concerns over Alito’s impartiality and his ability to objectively decide cases currently before the court that relate to the Jan. 6 attackers and Trump’s attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. Alito has not commented on the flag at his summer home.

Here is the history and current symbolism of the “Appeal to Heaven” flag.

WHAT ARE ITS ORIGINS?

Ted Kaye, secretary for the North American Vexillological Association , which studies flags and their meaning, said the “Appeal to Heaven” banner dates to the Revolutionary War.

Six schooners outfitted by George Washington to intercept British vessels at sea flew the flag in 1775 as they sailed under his command. It became the maritime flag of Massachusetts in 1776 and remained so until 1971, he said.

According to Americanflags.com the pine tree on the flag symbolized strength and resilience in the New England colonies while the words “Appeal to Heaven” stemmed from the belief that God would deliver the colonists from tyranny.

HOW HAS ITS SYMBOLISM CHANGED?

There are a few different reasons people fly “Appeal to Heaven” flags today, said Jared Holt, a senior analyst at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, a London-based think tank that tracks online hate, disinformation and extremism.

Some fans of it identify with a “patriot” movement that obsesses over the Founding Fathers and the American Revolution, he said. Others adhere to a Christian nationalist worldview that seeks to elevate Christianity in public life.

“It’s not abundantly clear which of those reasons would be accurate” in this situation, Holt said. But he called the display outside Alito’s home “alarming,” saying those who do fly the flag are often advocating for “more intolerant and restrictive forms of government aligned with a specific religious philosophy.”

The “Appeal to Heaven” flag was among several banners carried by the Jan. 6 rioters, who also favored religious banners symbolizing the white Christian nationalist movement., the Confederate flag and the yellow Gadsden flag, with its rattlesnake and “Don’t Tread on Me” message, said Bradley Onishi, author of “Preparing for War: The Extremist History of White Christian Nationalism.”

“That’s the family,” he said.

WHAT ABOUT MIKE JOHNSON?

House Speaker Mike Johnson displays the flag in the hallway outside his office next to the flag of his home state, Louisiana. He said he has flown it “for as long as I can remember.”

Johnson, a Republican, told The Associated Press he did not know the flag had come to represent the “Stop the Steal” movement.

“Never heard that before,” he said.

The speaker, who led one of Trump’s legal challenges to the 2020 election, defended the flag and its continued use despite the modern-day symbolism around it.

“I have always used that flag for as long as I can remember, because I was so enamored with the fact that Washington used it,” Johnson said. “The Appeal to Heaven flag is a critical, important part of American history. It’s something that I’ve always revered since I’ve been a young man.”

He added: “People misuse our symbols all the time. It doesn’t mean we don’t use the symbols anymore.”

Johnson said he had never flown the U.S. flag upside in distress, as Alito did, and he declined to assess the justice’s situation and whether raising the flags at his home was appropriate.

But he called the criticism of the “Appeal to Heaven” flag “contrived.”

“It’s nonsense,” he said. “It’s part of our history. We don’t remove statues and we don’t cover up things that are so essential to who we are as a country.”

SHOULD ALITO RECUSE?

House Democratic Whip, Katherine Clark of Massachusetts said in a statement that the display of the “Appeal to Heaven” flag at an Alito home was “not just another example of extremism that has overtaken conservatism. This is a threat to the rule of law and a serious breach of ethics, integrity and Justice Alito’s oath of office.”

She called for Alito to recuse himself from any cases related to Jan. 6 and the former president.

There’s a clear difference between the House speaker displaying the flag outside his office and a Supreme Court justice flying it and the upside down American flag outside his homes as the court is deciding cases involving issues those flags have come to symbolize, said Alicia Bannon director of the Judiciary Program at the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University.

Alito’s actions don’t “just cross the line,” she said. “They take you out of the stadium and out of the parking lot.”

Alito and the court declined to respond to requests for comment on how the “Appeal to Heaven” flag came to be flying and what it was intended to express.

Alito has said the upside down American flag was briefly flown by his wife during a dispute with neighbors and that he had no part in it.

ANOTHER BLOW TO THE COURT’S REPUTATION

The Supreme Court already was under fire as it considers unprecedented cases against Trump and some of those charged for the attack on the Capitol.

An issue at the center of the controversy is that the high court does not have to adhere to the same ethics codes that guide other federal judges. The Supreme Court had long gone without its own code of ethics , but it adopted one in November 2023 in the face of sustained criticism over undisclosed trips and gifts from wealthy benefactors to some justices, including Alito. The code lacks a means of enforcement, however.

The federal code of judicial ethics does not universally prohibit judges from involvement in nonpartisan or religious activity off the bench. But it does say that a judge “should not participate in extrajudicial activities that detract from the dignity of the judge’s office, interfere with the performance of the judge’s official duties” or “reflect adversely on the judge’s impartiality.”

Jeremy Fogel, executive director of the Berkeley Judicial Institute at the University of California, Berkeley Law School, said the flag revelations lead to questions about whether Alito can be impartial in any case related to Jan. 6 or Trump.

“Displaying those particular flags creates the appearance at least that the justice is signifying agreement with those viewpoints at a time when there are cases before the court where those viewpoints are relevant,” he said.

A March AP/NORC poll found that only about one-quarter of Americans think the Supreme Court is doing a somewhat or very good job upholding democratic values. About 45% think it’s doing a somewhat or very bad job.

Tony Carrk, executive director of Accountable.US, a progressive watchdog organization, said the controversy shows that further steps are needed to put teeth into the court’s ethics code.

“There’s a reason why the confidence in credibility among the American people for the Supreme Court has plummeted to an all-time low,” he said.
