Boston police are investigating what they said was an apparent suicide aboard the yacht of Red Sox owner John Henry on Monday afternoon. The team issued the following statement:

Earlier today, a crew member on the vessel, M/Y Iroquois, apparently took his life aboard the vessel docked at 30 Rowes Wharf. Mr. Henry and the members of the Boston Red Sox are saddened by the news and send deepest condolences to his family. Apparently only crew members were on board the vessel when the incident occurred.

Authorities and medics were called to Rowes Wharf behind the Boston Harbor Hotel, where the yacht was parked. Officers found a man, roughly 30 years old, in cardiac arrest. He died, and his identity has not been released. A Boston police spokesperson said it was "an apparent suicide," according to CBS Boston .

Henry, 63, purchased the Red Sox in 2002 as part of a multi-franchise sale that put the Marlins in the hands of Jeffrey Loria. Henry made his fortune as a commodities broker.

Red Sox owner buys $84 million yacht: Report

Looks like John Henry will be spending the MLB offseason on the water. According to Yacht Harbour , the Red Sox head is the new owner of an $84 million Ester III yacht.

Henry, who is also principal owner of The Boston Globe and the Liverpool Football Club and co-owner of Roush Fenway Racing, paid in full for the 216-foot yacht. The ship boasts an infinity pool on the main deck, spa, gym, helipad and accommodations for 12 guests.

The ship’s former owner was reportedly Georgy Bedzhamov, a former executive of the bankrupted Russian lender Vneshprombank and former president of the Olympic Russian Federation of Bobsleigh, who has been accused of bank fraud.

Boston police probe death on Red Sox owner's yacht

BOSTON (REUTERS) - Police are investigating the apparent suicide of a crew member on the luxury yacht of Boston Red Sox baseball team owner John Henry, the police and a Red Sox official said on Monday.

Emergency workers went to the 50m yacht, Iroquois, at midday, where they found a 28- to 30-year-old man whose heart had stopped, a police official said by email.

He "apparently took his life aboard the vessel", Red Sox spokesman Kevin Gregg said. "Apparently only crew members were on board the vessel when the incident occurred."

Officials did not give a cause of death or provide any other details about the incident.

Henry, 63, is a billionaire former commodities and foreign exchange trader, who has owned the Red Sox since 2002. He is also the principal owner of the Liverpool Football Club.

Henry's primary residence is in Boca Raton, Florida, but he keeps the Iroquois docked at a wharf in Boston, and married his second wife on board in 2009, according to Forbes.

john henry

Henry and Pizzuti in Fenway Park, where they’ll celebrate their wedding late next month. (Photograph by David Yellen)

John Henry stood on the bow of his yacht, wearing a Red Sox T-shirt and tan safari hat, sunscreen covering his nose. Next to him was his fiancée, Linda Pizzuti, in a red tube top that revealed a bit of black bikini underneath. She was explaining to him the history of the Bridge of the Americas, how it connects North America to South. As she read from her guidebook, he looked at her with bemusement. This cruise through the Panama Canal to the Galapagos had been her idea, and now she was serving as eager tour leader.

We’d spent the past three days cruising the canal aboard Henry’s yacht, the Iroquois , a 164-foot vessel with a dozen crew. The trip would be the farthest south Henry had ever ventured, and an immeasurable distance from the posh Mediterranean and Caribbean vacations he was used to. But then, his relationship with Pizzuti has been full of firsts. They were a couple no one could have seen coming—and one that, for a while, had looked doomed. Along the way, Henry, an intensely private man, showed a side of himself that would surprise the Bostonians for whom the 59-year-old Red Sox owner is such an enigmatic figure. I know, because as one of Pizzuti’s closest friends, I had a front-row seat to the whole thing.

Henry began the evening of June 6, 2008, as he did many nights since filing for divorce the previous year: out with the guys. He and Red Sox chairman Tom Werner, a fellow divorcé, met for dinner at Scampo at the Liberty Hotel, one of their favorite haunts. The third member of their party, nightclub owner Ed Kane, was delayed leaving his 25-year Harvard reunion. So to kill time they headed over to the adjacent Alibi bar, where Harley Bilzerian, daughter of Newbury Street boutique owner Alan Bilzerian, was celebrating her 30th birthday.

The shy, somewhat awkward Henry stood in the corner with Werner, who threw open his arms to hug two of Bilzerian’s friends when they came over to say hello. The women were soon joined by a third. Her poise—not to mention her glossy dark hair, endless eyelashes, and ear-to-ear smile—made an immediate impression on Henry.

“John Henry is staring at you,” Amy Belkin, daughter of developer Steve Belkin, told Pizzuti.

“Who’s John Henry?” Pizzuti asked.

Though a Boston native, Pizzuti didn’t follow sports. Feeling uncomfortable with the stranger’s attention, she avoided eye contact. Henry, for his part, kept staring and racking his brain for something clever to say.

Werner, Henry, and Kane call themselves the Cirque du Rire, or Circus of Laughs. They came together after David Ginsberg, vice chairman of the Red Sox, introduced Kane to Henry in the summer of 2007. The group proceeded to spend what was by their count close to 100 straight days together—going to games, eating dinners, watching movies. It’s not often men their age meet comrades they feel so akin to; they think of themselves as brothers. “Between Tom, Ed, and me,” Henry says, “it’s never boring.”

It was 11 p.m. when Kane finally arrived at Alibi with girlfriend Aurora Ransbottom. He asked Henry what he’d missed. “I said, ‘Well, there is an interesting woman over there I was introduced to,'” Henry recalls. He told Kane he couldn’t think of anything to say to her. “Really?” Kane said. “No problem, I’ll send Aurora over.” As Ransbottom approached the woman, “I watched in a little bit of horror,” Henry says.

Taking charge, Ransbottom asked Pizzuti if she would like to join them for a late-night bite at the South End restaurant Stella. Pizzuti shot back with questions: How well did she know these guys? How long had she known them? But after a powwow, our group of friends convinced her to go with the moment. I made her promise to call when she got home.

At Stella, Henry and Kane traded funny stories about celebrating the 2007 World Series win. Pizzuti, not being a fan, didn’t get a lot of their references, but she found their humor disarming. Afterward, she accepted Henry’s offer of a ride home, and sat next to him in his Mercedes coupe, with Kane and Ransbottom squeezed into the back seat. Henry dropped the couple off first. As they walked away arm in arm, Henry said, “Look how in love they are.” After lingering a moment, he drove Pizzuti to her North End apartment.

“Let me know if you’d ever like to go to a baseball game,” he told her, handing her his Red Sox business card. Pizzuti thanked him, but had no intention of taking him up on the offer.

What is Red Sox ownership doing? And when are the prospects coming? Mailbag, part 1

BOSTON, MA - JULY 26: Boston Red Sox Principal Owner John Henry looks on during a pre-game ceremony in recognition of the National Baseball Hall of Fame induction of former Former Boston Red Sox player David Ortiz before a game between the Boston Red Sox and the Cleveland Guardians on July 26, 2022 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts. (Photo by Billie Weiss/Boston Red Sox/Getty Images)

It’s been a confounding offseason so far. First-time boss Craig Breslow has made some interesting moves, but spring training is a month away and the Red Sox still have a roster that looks very much incomplete. It’s been a while since our last mailbag, and as usual, our readers had plenty of questions with over 140 submissions. I tried to answer the biggest themes: In part one here, we’ll tackle some questions on ownership’s direction as well as the club’s pitching development, explore what happened with Teoscar Hernández and discuss the future of several top prospects.

In part two, we’ll take a look at some trade scenarios, assess the Red Sox’s catching outlook, predict what’s coming for Masataka Yoshida ’s second year, sketch out Rafael Devers future at third, identify 2024 breakout candidates and more.

Where do you think the direction is going for Fenway Sports Group? I’m not asking to really look into their other purchases of Liverpool FC or the Pittsburgh Penguins, but do you think they may plan to sell in the coming future? Clearly it seems they brought in Breslow to make trades and be creative, while staying under the luxury tax. I’m not a fan that’s yelling “Sell the team” quite yet, but just wondering your thoughts. — Hans P.

This was one of about 40 questions (not exaggerating) relating to what ownership is doing, the direction of the franchise, selling the team and payroll in general. I’ll start with this: I do think they notice attendance numbers are slipping and they certainly noticed droves of visiting fans filling the stands as well as that late-season Yankees series where the park was hardly full. In some respects it seems like they’re white-knuckling through a self-induced tough time image-wise, waiting to get to the other side because they believe in their long-term vision, but they aren’t laying out clearly enough what that vision is or what the end date might be. They are just asking for blind faith. They promised a “full throttle” approach and have hardly shown that this winter.

There has been plenty of speculation in recent years on whether the reduced spending means John Henry and Fenway Sports Group is ramping up investing elsewhere like the NBA or further in the English Premier League . And while those things do seem to be in play as FSG expands its portfolio, one thing I think what’s received less attention is the $1.6 billion project approved last summer by the Boston Planning and Development Agency to overhaul the Fenway area. New shops, apartments, labs, offices and restaurants will permeate the Jersey Street and Brookline Ave area surrounding the ballpark in the coming years. Part of the project has already been approved, but there is a second part still pending before construction can begin. That’s a significant amount of money and I do have to wonder if some of that is what’s at play here with the reduced Red Sox payroll. I don’t think they’d sell in the middle of this long-term project and in 2022, Henry told us , “Every few years I read that the team is for sale, but our actual internal conversations always center on the future.”

Sam Kennedy and Co. are apprehensive about sharing too much about their financials, but it makes sense that that amount of capital, directly tied to the Fenway area, would be affecting the team’s payroll in some way. Kennedy has long said FSG’s separate entities — whether it be the Red Sox, Liverpool football club, Roush Racing, the Pittsburgh Penguins, etc. — all operate on their own budgets and don’t affect moves within other franchises, but this Fenway development is so closely tied to the Red Sox it might be different. The main factor here though is that if ownership isn’t fielding a team that can compete in the American League East, the immense amount of money poured into sprucing up the area, won’t matter if attendance keeps slipping and the product on the field suffers. With all that said, investing in development of the area is a good way to entice a buyer down the line — an iconic team and a bustling, economically fruitful area around the park.

The problem is that frustration is so high right now, building up around the park won’t matter if no one is coming to games anymore. I think Henry firmly believes spending around $225 million for payroll should be enough to field a competitive team. It sounds more and more like he didn’t think Bloom made the right moves with the money he was allotted to spend. Whether that’s fair or not is another discussion. Breslow seems to be entering a similar paradox of finding the best talent for a set payroll. There are successful teams with lower payrolls, but the best players require top money and the best players help win games more often than not. I’m sure Henry looks at the likes of the Mets and Padres of last year as spending exorbitantly and not winning, so that likely further validates his view trying to win within a set payroll window.

I’ll be clear, I’m not validating any of this, just trying to understand their thought process. I think it’s completely fair for fans to be angry about sky high ticket prices and billionaire owners not spending to their full means. But I’m also not sure they’ll change anytime soon.

What are the odds of ownership appearing at Winter weekend? — Claire M.

On Wednesday, the Red Sox sent out a press release about Winter Weekend and didn’t mention any type of town hall format with baseball leadership like they did last year leading up to that event, one in which ownership and the front office were booed. If you remember last year, I had an email exchange with Henry in spring training in which he answered a few of my questions, one of which was about fan frustration. His reply, about there being a false narrative about that event and the state of the team, was telling. If he attends this year and is booed again it’s a bad look. If he doesn’t attend, it’s also a bad look.

What’s more surprising is that Rafael Devers and Kenley Jansen , two of the bigger names on the roster, won’t be at Winter Weekend (as of now). It’s a bit of a microcosm of the games themselves — asking fans to show up and pay for an event where the biggest name players aren’t attending.

I read Andrew Bailey state that they look for pitchers with great stuff over control as it’s easier to teach/work on control than plus stuff. Also, if you miss your spot with great stuff you may be OK, if control artists miss their spots they get hit. I think this is a huge departure from the way Chaim Bloom ran the draft as it seems most of our recently drafted pitchers had great control but not many plus pitches. What are your thoughts on that? — Matthew D.

So the biggest knock on the two top pitchers in the system right now, Wikelman Gonzalez and Luis Perales , is that they have plus pitches, but spotty command. These are the types of pitchers new pitching coach Bailey and Breslow — but more so new director of pitching Justin Willard — will dig in on. I talked to Willard last month about this, and asked him how they help pitchers with command. Not surprisingly he got into several different factors they’ll begin to tackle from the mental side to more specific cues pitchers can practice ( more on all that here ), but I will be keeping an eye on both Gonzalez and Perales this season as the guinea pigs for how this new system is implemented. Both pitchers are on the 40-man roster and the closest mound prospects to contributing in the majors so getting them ready is a priority. As it relates to the draft, I do think under Breslow there will be a heavier emphasis on drafting pitchers given his background and the farm system’s need. In previous years, the Red Sox had tried to target the best player available regardless of position, but I’m curious to see how the focus changes going forward. You’ve already seen Breslow’s aggressiveness in adding pitching prospects this winter via trades. Baseball America labeled Justin Slaten as the top pitcher available in the Rule 5 Draft. When the Mets selected him ahead of the Red Sox, Breslow worked a trade with the Mets immediately after the draft to acquire Slaten. They’re clearly targeting pitchers they feel fit their system in Slaten, Richard Fitts , Cooper Criswell and others they’ve added this winter.

It’s a little disheartening to see Teoscar Hernández signing with the Dodgers for just one year after reading for weeks that the Red Sox were among the frontrunners for his services but were not willing to offer three years as his camp had been seeking. Do we know whether the Sox made him an offer? — Brett B.

boston red sox owner yacht

Based on conversations I’ve had with people close to the situation, the Red Sox are trying to keep outfield commitments to two years and didn’t want to extend to a third year. In order to add Hernández, they were looking to move another outfielder — Ken Rosenthal and I reported last week they had received offers on Masataka Yoshida — but it appears they ultimately decided not to make any of the moves that would have cleared a spot for Hernandez and he and his agent didn’t want to wait any longer with the Dodgers offer on the table. The shorter commitments the Red Sox are seeking suggest they are expecting to rely heavily on prospects like Roman Anthony and Ceddanne Rafaela in the near future. But wouldn’t you want a veteran like Hernández around to help them ease into the majors? They clearly viewed the situation differently.

What is a realistic timetable to expect the big league arrival of Roman Anthony and Kyle Teel , assuming success for each in 2024? Should we anticipate a summer call up? — Michael O.

I think it’s more likely Yorke and/or Mayer get a glimpse of the majors at the end of the season with Anthony and Teel getting their debuts in 2025, but I won’t completely rule it out. We have yet to see how aggressive Breslow is in terms of prospect promotion, but two years ago the Red Sox gave Triston Casas a glimpse of the majors in September and I could see a similar scenario for Mayer and/or Yorke.

I’m nervous with Mayer’s history of injury and trouble at Double A that now might be the time to sell, get something like a young controllable starting pitcher like (Jesús) Luzardo or one of the starters in Seattle. If he has a bad year and flames out, they completely lose out on the asset. Do you get the sense the front office strongly believes his injury contributed to his poor play at Double A and are intent on him being part of the future? — Anonymous

It’s still a little hard to read which prospects Breslow views as untradeable. My assumption is still Mayer, Anthony and Teel but he hasn’t come out and said that (no GM-type usually does, for what it’s worth). That said, it’s not just the Red Sox’s evaluation of these players; third-party evaluators view these players, including Mayer, as top-notch. Baseball America still ranks Mayer the No. 15 prospect in all of baseball with Anthony coming in four spots lower at No. 19 and Teel at No. 85. Those rankings came out in September after each player’s 2023 season. Meanwhile, teams across the league keep track of these players too. If there’s any hesitation that a guy is going to be slipping, the Mariners or Marlins are not going to trade their best player for him.

I truly do think last year was an anomaly for Mayer and I think he’ll have a big rebound year. Another questioner had commented that there hadn’t been much said about Mayer’s health. Earlier this offseason, I talked to director of player development Brian Abraham, who said Mayer was on track for a healthy, full offseason, had spent time in Fort Myers before the mandatory minor league break was scheduled to be back in early January when camp re-opened. Moreover, Mayer is going to be a part of the Rookie Development camp at Fenway next week and I think if he weren’t a full go, they wouldn’t have him participating.

Red Sox Owner John Henry Buys Waterfront Estate On Nantucket

Jason Graziadei • Apr 27, 2022

Boston Red Sox owner John W. Henry has dropped $25 million on a waterfront estate on Nantucket in the Shimmo neighborhood.

Henry, who is also the principal owner of The Boston Globe and the Liverpool Football Club, is expected to close on an abutting property at 48 Shimmo Pond Road that could bring the total value of the two acquisitions to approximately $35 to $38 million, island real estate sources told the Current .

Taken together, the deals could break the record for the highest sale of residential real estate in Nantucket history, eclipsing the previous record of $36 million for a home on Lincoln Avenue that was set less than two weeks ago.

The transaction last Friday for $25 million listed Harbor Hill House LLC as the buyer, an entity registered to John W. Henry at 433 Plaza Real, Boca Raton, Fla.

The property Henry acquired on Friday at 4 Middle Valley Road is a waterfront estate that features multiple buildings totaling 18,100 square feet, including 10 bedrooms and 15 bathrooms. It was previously owned by entrepreneur Donald Burns, who tapped internationally known architect Hugh Newell Jacobsen to envision the compound. The property was recently featured in Architectural Digest .

The two properties at 4 Middle Valley Road and 48 Shimmo Pond Road - both owned by Burns - had been on the market together for $42.5 million .

On April 22, the property at 48 Shimmo Pond Road was transferred by Burns' limited liability company to another entity - 48 SBR LLC - registered to Boston attorney Joseph Brodigan. That sale was completed for $0.

Henry and his wife Linda Pizzuti have previously vacationed on Nantucket, and once told WGBH that the decision to move forward with the purchase of the Boston Globe was finalized during a beach walk on the island.

The deal for the waterfront estate marks just the latest high-end real estate transaction in Nantucket’s white-hot real estate market. The aforementioned $36 million sale of 21 Lincoln Avenue - which is believed to have sold to Texas businessman Robert Bass - was preceded by the $32.5 million sale of 42 Easton Street on Brant Point last October to Stephen A. Schwarzman.

Last year there were two other sales over $30 million on Nantucket, including the commercial properties of the Beachside Hotel for $38 million , and the Nantucket Inn for $30 million .

Orcas attack, sink sailing yacht in Strait of Gibraltar

Excitement on the water off Southern California is at an all-time high with pod of killer whales hanging around for a month Newport Beach, CA - January 09: Orcas swim off the coast of Crystal Cove State Park in Newport Beach on Tuesday, January 9, 2024. In a frightening attack that has become a trend in the past four years, an unknown number of orcas rammed and sank a sailing yacht in Moroccan waters in the Strait of Gibraltar, Spain’s maritime rescue service reported early this week. They said they did not know how many of the apex predators were in on the attack.

The Alboran Cognac, a 15-meter (49-foot) yacht, was carrying two people when the boat encountered the animals, also known as killer whales, at 9 a.m. local time (7:00 GMT) on Sunday.

The passengers said they felt sudden blows to the hull and rudder as water started seeping into the ship, according to NBC News. After calling for rescue services, the passengers fled to a nearby oil tanker that took them to Gibraltar.

The yacht eventually sank.

The incident was the latest report of orca ramming around the Gibraltar Strait that separates Europe from Africa and off the Atlantic coast of Portugal and northwestern Spain. A research group called GTOA, which tracks populations of the Iberian orca subspecies, said there have been nearly 700 interactions since orca attacks on ships in the area were first reported in May 2020, NBC News reported .

Experts are confused about the probable causes. One theory is that it is a playful manifestation of the animals’ natural curiosity. Others believe it may be a fad among the highly social orcas, or deiberate targeting of what they believe to be competitors for their favorite prey, the bluefin tuna.

Experts believe the attacks involve a subpopulation of about 15 orcas that have been given the designation Gladis, Reuters reported .

Steward Health Care files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy

By Matt Schooley , Christina Hager , Michael Kaplan

Updated on: May 7, 2024 / 9:37 AM EDT / CBS Boston

BOSTON –  Steward Health Care , the struggling health care provider that relied on backing from private equity investors to quickly acquire dozens of community hospitals, including facilities in Massachusetts, Texas and Florida, announced Monday that it is filing for bankruptcy.

Steward, which is millions of dollars in debt , said it has "commenced an in-court restructuring process through the filing of voluntary petitions for relief" under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. It submitted the filing in the Southern District of Texas.

The Dallas-based company currently owns 30 hospitals across eight states, including nine in Massachusetts, where its smoldering financial crisis has raised concerns about patient safety .

Steward has been one focus of a year-and-a-half-long CBS News investigation revealing how private equity investors have siphoned hundreds of millions of dollars from community hospitals with devastating public health consequences . Records reviewed by CBS News showed Steward hospitals around the country with a trail of unpaid bills, at times risking a shortage of potentially lifesaving supplies.

Last year, CBS News found Steward redirected money away from hospital operations by selling off the real estate of San Antonio's Texas Vista Medical Center before closing the facility altogether.

The company's bankruptcy filing lists 30 creditors who are owed a total of more than $500 million, including the U.S. government, which is owed more than $32 million to the federal government in reimbursements for insurance overpayments.

Experts tell CBS News that Steward's debts are likely much higher, and when the dust settles, it could be one of the largest hospital bankruptcies in U.S. history. In a statement, the company said it is relying on its landlord, Medical Properties Trust, to provide sufficient funding to allow its hospitals to continue to operate through bankruptcy.

"The Company is finalizing the terms of debtor-in-possession financing from Medical Properties Trust for initial funding of $75 million and up to an additional $225 million upon the satisfaction of certain conditions acceptable to Medical Properties Trust," Steward said in a statement.

No day-to-day impacts expected, Steward Health Care says

The company said declaring bankruptcy allows it to "continue to provide necessary care to its patients in their communities without disruption."

Both Steward and Massachusetts officials said they expected no interruptions in day-to-day operations.

"Steward hospitals remain open, and patients should not hesitate to seek care," said Massachusetts Health and Human Services Secretary Kate Walsh in a statement, adding that the state "is working with Steward and any potential partners to support an orderly transfer of ownership that protects access to care, preserves jobs and stabilizes our health care system."

"It is safe to get care in Steward facilities. The facilities are open. You should not drive past it if you are having chest pains, if you're a pregnant person about to deliver, please go to the hospital closest to you," Massachusetts Public Health Commissioner Dr. Robert Goldstein said.

Despite those assurances, anxiety over the future viability of the company's hospitals runs deep, particularly in Massachusetts. For months, health care workers have voiced concern over the impact of any potential closure.

"The potential loss of any of these facilities will have devastating consequences for hundreds of thousands of residents from the South Shore to southern New Hampshire," the Massachusetts Nurses Association said in a statement. "However, Steward going through the process of reorganization provides an opportunity for other stakeholders to take long-awaited action and center the voices of caregivers and patients," the statement said in part.

And patients are concerned about the hospitals in their neighborhoods.

"We need this hospital. This is a nice hospital," said Riaz Udein, who's been going to the same doctor at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center in Boston for 22 years. "The neighborhood and everybody need it."

"It's needed," said Zadani Mehdi, walking into an appointment at St. Elizabeth's on Monday. "I hope they do keep this hospital open, honestly. There are a lot of patients that come here. I've been coming here since a little kid."

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey promised that the state would help Steward patients and that they would ensure that a situation like this does not happen again.

"I do not want to lose sight of the fact that the situation stems from and is rooted in greed, mismanagement, and lack of transparency on the part of Steward leadership in Dallas, Texas. I have been clear about that, and I will continue to be clear about that. It is a situation that should never have happened, and we will be working together to ensure that there are steps taken to make sure that this does not happen again," Governor Healey said.

The Healey administration has launched a hotline (617-468-2189) and website for patients who have questions.

Private equity's impact on health care

A spokesperson for Steward previously told CBS News company executives always put patients first and said they "deny that any other considerations were placed ahead of that guiding principle." The spokesperson said Steward "has actively and meaningfully invested" in its hospital system since its formation, including in Massachusetts, where it took over hospitals that were "failing" and "about to close."

"Steward's investment has taken the form of facility upgrades, equipment, technology, and other meaningful improvements," the spokesperson wrote.

Yet Steward has become synonymous with the perils of private equity investment in health care. The company started buying up Massachusetts hospitals in 2010, with hundreds of millions of dollars in backing from private equity giant Cerberus ,

Cerberus shed its stake in Steward by January 2021, after making an $800 million profit in a decade, according to a report from Bloomberg . Financial records show Steward has also sold off more than $1 billion of its hospitals' land and buildings since 2016 to Medical Properties Trust, which has made a business of buying up hospital real estate from private equity investors.

A filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission from 2021 shows Steward's owners also paid themselves millions in dividends. Around the same time, Steward CEO Ralph de la Torre acquired a 190-foot yacht estimated to be worth $40 million. In an email to CBS News, Steward confirmed de la Torre owned the yacht.

"Steward Health Care has done everything in its power to operate successfully in a highly challenging health care environment," de la Torre said in the company's statement, released at 3:30 a.m. Monday morning. "Filing for Chapter 11 restructuring is in the best interests of our patients, physicians, employees, and communities at this time."

Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey tweeted , "De la Torre and his morally bankrupt business model have failed our hospitals, our providers, and our patients. He and his private equity allies must be held accountable. I'll keep fighting to keep hospitals open and protect patients and providers."
