Mazu’s New Flagship 82
- By Yachting Staff
- Updated: July 23, 2020
Mazu Yachts in Turkey has delivered Hull No.1 of its flagship 82-footer.
The Mazu 82 is powered with triple 1,000 hp Volvo Penta IPS1350 diesels, which provide a 40-knot top-end speed and a 33-knot cruise speed, according to the builder. Mazu also reports about a 400-nautical-mile range at cruise speed.
The yacht’s sporty performance is aided, in part, to its carbon-composite sandwich construction, which helps keep the yacht’s displacement at around 110,000 pounds. The Mazu 82 also has a deep-V hull form with 19 degrees deadrise at the transom and 28 degrees at the bow.
“The hull lines of the new Mazu 82 were designed in-house to provide a perfect balance between top speed, seakeeping capability and fuel efficiency,” said Halit Yukay, lead designer and CEO of Mazu Yachts in a statement.
The Mazu 82′s profile is sinewy and linear creating sharp, well-defined lines. Cut-down bulwarks amidships enable ocean vistas from the salon. Hull-side glass helps bring in light and those salty views to the three staterooms belowdecks as well. The glass superstructure enables nearly 360-degree views from the helm and salon. The builder says the windshield is tempered and laminated, and “bulletproof.”
One of the Mazu 82′s custom features for this owner is “terraced steps” from the cockpit to the swim platform. The design allowed for a mini-mezzanine just above the swim platform, creating a place for cocktails after a swim or for keeping an eye on the kids when they’re in the water.
According to Mazu, the owner has taken delivery and is currently cruising his yacht, and he is even planning on using it as a floating office this winter.
In addition to the 82, Mazu’s model lineup includes 38-, 42- , 52- and 62-foot models.

How Mazu Packed All the Luxury of a Superyacht Into This Speedy 82-Footer
The new mazu 82 has an avant-garde interior, a foredeck that transforms into an open-air cinema, and even a bulletproof windshield., michael verdon, michael verdon's most recent stories.

Turkey is a global hotspot for superyacht design, and one of its cruiser builders has found a way to incorporate features from those huge vessels into a much smaller hull. The new Mazu 82 is a remarkably fresh design, with a lightweight carbon composite hull that gives it a top end of 46 mph, and an interior by acclaimed Turkish designer Tanju Özelgin that turns it into an avant-garde residence on the water.

Instead of the plain-jane designs emanating from many shipyards, Özelgin worked with Mazu to create a contemporary interior that combines large windows with muted colors, subtle textures and both strong natural and indirect lighting. The designer refers to the interior as “understated elegance.”
Mazu founder Halit Yukay says the interior works well with the huge open bow area and angular lines of the deckhouse. “The exterior and interior should be seen as a whole as one is the extension of the other,” says Yukay. “Both should create a coherent unity and reflect the main mood and feelings that the designer intended.”
The exterior makes optimal use of space, like the forward area that can be converted to an outdoor cinema, or the stern’s social/dining area. Just adjacent, the three steps down to the swim platform are designed to be used as seating while the yacht is at anchor. Mazu Yachts
Beyond feelings, the shipyard employed superyacht techniques like using one-piece panes of glass wherever possible to provide a more uniform look. But it wasn’t all about the aesthetics, either. The oversized tempered, laminated front windshield has a PVB interlayer that makes the structure bulletproof, while also being extra clear to eliminate distortions and glare. Mazu also added a custom sliding roof to open up the helm area and main salon to the sky.
Because of the finite length of the hull, some elements have been designed to do double-duty. The three steps from the aft cockpit to the swim platform, for instance, also function as furniture, so guests can sit, or even lie down, and still be connected to the adjacent social dining area.
“Multifunctional design was important for the owner,” said Yukay. “In fact, the open foredeck has three different uses: as a sunbathing area, a dining area for 12 people, and a screen can be set up to turn it into an open-air cinema.” You can’t get more superyacht than an outdoor cinema.
The unusually large windshield is both aesthetically pleasing and highly technical–so protective that it’s bulletproof. Mazu Yachts
Özelgin, one of Turkey’s most famous residential designers, wanted to create an interior that was more in tune with land-based architecture than a typical yacht. “The space has to be as compact and light as possible without losing the illusion of feeling at home,” he said. “One of our key aspects during the design phase of the yacht was to create a space that feels more as if you were in your own house with all the familiarity and comfort that comes with it.”
To enhance that feeling, the designer created a custom lighting system that incorporates both direct sunlight and more subtle indirect lighting. “Lighting is an important tool for the designer to create an atmosphere and mood,” says Özelgin.
The designer also combined warm, light-colored materials like walnut and leather, with walls decorated with teak paneling that has been textured and painted a metallic gray. The 82’s textiles and carpets were also specially designed for the boat, as were the doors with bronzed tempered glass and matching stainless-steel hardware.
The designer combined subtle, metallic colors in the walls with brighter, warmer hues in the walnut floors and leather furniture. Large swathes of glass create strong natural lighting. Pozitif Studyo
“The chosen materials are as light as possible and the textures give a sense of spaciousness with a touch of warmth,” said Özelgin.
That contemporary sensibility, infused with warmth, is the element that makes the Mazu 82 most like a bespoke superyacht. Of course, the big differentiator is that the Mazu can run at speeds that few superyachts could ever hope to match.

MAZU 82 SUPERYACHT
STEP ONBOARD THE NEW 40-KNOTS MAZU 82 SUPERYACHT WITH AN EXCLUSIVE VIDEO WALKTHROUGH
MAZU 82 SUPERYACHT -Built of a lightweight carbon composite, the Mazu 82 combines a clean profile, expansive decks and large hull windows with the outstanding performance, efficiency and handling.
The celebrated Turkish designer Tanju Özelgin created the interior layout and design of the Mazu 82 . Working closely with the shipyard, Özelgin optimised the generous volume and large hull windows, combining subtle textures, muted colours, and both direct and indirect light to create a vibe of understated elegance.
The end result is an interior design that perfectly complements the edgy exterior styling of the Mazu 82, designed in-house by the shipyard’s founder, Halit Yukay: “The interior and the exterior should never be defined as two different aspects but should be seen as a whole as one is the extension of the other,” refers Yukay. “ Both should create a coherent unity and reflect the main mood and feelings the designer intended.”
The exterior profile of the 82-footer is characterised by the flush main deck with no steps and the angular lines of the all-glass deckhouse. Wherever possible the shipyard has used one-piece glass panes, which meant increasing their thickness in accordance with class requirements.
Hence the tempered and laminated windshield is over 22mm thick and with a PVB interlayer is literally bulletproof. The glass is also extra clear to eliminate distortion and reflections. Three openable ‘portholes’ at the front of the superstructure provide natural ventilation while under way. With its sliding aluminium roof, custom-made by OPAC in Italy , the main deck has an airy, loft-like feel.
On special request of the owner, Mazu modified the aft deck design to include terraced steps leading down to the swim platform. These steps function as built-in furniture so guests can sit down (they are wide enough to even lie down) and still converse with other guests.
“Multifunctional design was very important for the owner,” continues Yukay . “In fact, the open foredeck has three different uses: as a sunbathing area, a dining area for 12 people, and a screen can be set up to turn it into an open-air cinema.”
Unique interior design
Tanju Özelgin is a designer renowned for its ability to transmit meaning in design through subtle and abstract uses of form, symbol and material. He is widely recognised for his distinct style that is contemporary and abstract yet deeply aware of the fundamentals of human nature and environment.
These same signature qualities distinguish the interior design aboard the new Mazu 82.
“The main challenge with yacht interiors is that the space mostly never stands still and is constantly surrounded by water, says the Turkish designer, who aimed to create an onboard ambience more in tune with land-based architecture. “This aspect will direct your decisions regarding which materials to use, the weight and scale of every piece of furniture, and whether or not the furniture is anchored to the decks or built-in.”
A major challenge for all yacht designers and builders is to draw in as much natural light as possible into the interior. In this regard, the Mazu 82 boasts very large deckhouse windows and strip glazing in the hull. In particular, the sliding sunroof, custom-made by OPAC in Italy, and 9-sqm windshield of ultra-clear laminated and tempered glass, lend the interior an airy, loft-like feel.
“The space has to be as compact and light as possible without losing the illusion of feeling at home or in a cosy hotel,” says the interior designer. “ This was one of our key aspects during the design phase of the yacht: to create a space that feels more as if you were in your own house with all the familiarity and comfort that comes with it.”
Artificial lighting is just as important as natural illumination and has to be both functional and atmospheric. For this reason, a bespoke lighting system was developed for the Mazu 82.
“Lighting is an important tool for the designer to create an atmosphere and mood, which further improves the design of the space,” says Özelgin. “ It is an extension of the feelings the designer wants to express and should always be considered as an reflection of the overall design.”
To create a chic yet warm and inviting feeling, walnut and leather has been used for the furniture – exclusively built by Mazu – while the walls are decorated with metallic finishes and teak paneling that has been textured and stained grey. The textiles and carpets were specially designed for the boat, as were the doors made of bronzed tempered glass and the stainless steel hardware that has been treated using thin-film deposit (PVD) techniques in the same bronze hue.
“The chosen materials are as light as possible and the textures give a sense of spaciousness with a touch of warmth” – says Özelgin.
The yacht is fitted with a state-of-the-art audio system (JL Audio for the exterior and Dali for the interior), which meant that close attention was paid to noise damping. Leather and Alcantara cladding and upholstery throughout help to mute unwanted sound.
The wet surfaces are of a special synthetic material that has a soft leather-like finish, while the bathroom faucets and accessories are by luxury hardware brand Gessi. The high-end galley equipment was supplied by Gaggenau.

This custom yacht comes with bulletproof windows and an interior swanky enough to warrant them — take a closer look
- The Mazu 82 is the latest creation to come out of Mazu Yachts, a shipbuilder that puts out just 10 vessels each year.
- The elegant yacht stretches 80 feet and boasts bulletproof glass that's nearly an inch thick.
- It has three bedrooms, multiple lounge areas, and an entirely custom interior.

Yacht designs, from the layperson's perspective, often fit into the mold of "anything you might find along the shores of Monaco." But this yacht? It's more fit for a high-class spy movie.
Mazu Yachts recently unveiled its Mazu 82, a menacing 80-footer that could easily be a prop in the next Bond flick. It shuns the bright palette and curvy lines of most yachts, and instead embraces a dark-grey color scheme and lots of aggressive angles.
Not to mention, it features bulletproof glass, ample outdoor seating, and a swanky, bespoke interior full of custom-built furniture.
The Mazu 82 came to us by way of Robb Report , and you can take a closer look at it below.
Meet the Mazu 82, the latest creation from Turkish boatbuilder Mazu Yachts.
Sporting a sleek, mean look straight out of "Mission: Impossible," the yacht looks like it could easily be concealing an illicit shipment of plutonium or several million dollars in cash.
Although it's unlikely you'd find any death lasers on board, the 80-foot yacht does have at least one feature befitting of a supervillain.
Mazu Yachts says it outfitted the vessel — which was commissioned by an unnamed buyer — with bulletproof glass windows that are nearly an inch thick.

You certainly don't need to be evading James Bond or Ethan Hunt for armored glass to be a smart buy.
Plenty of wealthy folks invest in bulletproofing on land, too — from their daily cars to their chauffeured SUVs.

But the Mazu 82 has a lot going for it aside from bulletproofing — for instance, its swanky outdoor decks seem like a lovely place to relax in between heists and world-domination plots.
The rear deck boasts a small bar area with room for a DJ station ...
... along with an outdoor dining setup.
Out back, guests can descend a few stairs and take a dip ...
... or pop a squat on some built-in seating.
The front deck can serve as a more formal dining area ...
... or as an open-air movie theater, even just for one.
The yacht's custom-designed interior is just as classy as you'd expect, featuring a main living room ...
... with a massive, nine-square-meter sunroof ...
... and a cockpit.
Mazu custom built all the furniture from walnut and leather.
Downstairs, you'll find a sunken sitting area ...
... and a minimalist kitchen.
The master suite spans the full width of the yacht ...
... and boasts a walk-in closet ...
... along with a bathroom.
Mazu built in another full-sized guest bedroom ...
... along with a smaller bedroom for children, extra guests, or henchmen.
Mazu Yachts only builds a scant 10 ships per year, and you can check its other offerings at its website, which is linked below.

Gallery: Inside the first Mazu 82 flagship superyacht
Inside the first mazu 82.
The first 24.5 metre Mazu 82 flagship superyacht has been delivered to its Turkish owner. Mazu Yachts has revealed the completed, bespoke interior. BOAT takes a look around...
The bespoke interior was penned by Turkish designer Tanju Özelgin who "aimed to create an on board ambiance more in tune with land based architecture."
Özelgin previously said his aim was to buck the trend of many yacht interior designs, which, he says, constantly seek to remind owners and guests they are at sea.
Instead, his interior design is intended to create the illusion of feeling “at home or in a nice hotel”.
The Guest Accommodation
Accommodation on board is for six guests across three staterooms, comprising a full-beam master amidships, an en suite VIP cabin forward, and a double stateroom.
The master suite bathroom features a large shower, with a walk-in wardrobe opposite.
Generous volumes combine with large hull windows, subtle textures and muted colours.
The Lighting
the yacht features a bespoke lighting system that combines both artificial and natural light.
"Lighting is an important tool for the designer to create an atmosphere and mood, which further improves the design of this space," Özelgin said.
