The Best Places To Eat & Drink In Little Five Points

The 14 Best Dive Bars In Atlanta image

The 14 Best Dive Bars In Atlanta

Little Five is the divey epicenter of ATL. Almost every bar in that hood could be classified as a dive, but Euclid Avenue Yacht Club is the quirkiest and one of the oldest. Their door says “membership not required,” but if it was, we’d absolutely pay the fee to belong to this dive bar staple in Little Five. The walls are stuffed with nautical-themed knickknacks (a giant shark, a bust of a mermaid) that look like they’ve been on the walls since the bar opened in the ’80s. After a few reliable beers, we’ll need one of their massive and messy burgers to keep our sea legs. Our favorite is the Backyard Burger with a spicy jalapeño ranch slaw dripping out the sides. Sure, there are plenty of places to get a burger and a brew in L5P, but Yacht Club's small space and nautical theme is our siren song for a wild night.

I have been dying to come here and I finally got the chance! I was going to a show at Aisle 5 with some friends so we popped in here about an hour before start and we were not disappointed. Plenty of space to sit which was awesome and you order at the bar! I love the Lowkey vibe and tax is included in all prices so your total is a round number which I thought was cool. I got the $3 draft of PBR and the Cuban sandwich with fries. The food came out PIPING hot!! That sandwich was delicious and different from your traditional Cuban and it came with this great spicy salsa. The fries were thin and crispy as well. Overall such a great experience. Best dive bar and a must stop in L5P

Solid spot for beer, cocktails or tots. Yes, the tater tots are great - you can get them plain or Yacht Tots which are basically loaded tots. There are plenty of bar seats and outdoor seating as well. Tecate is only $3.50 - almost unheard of these days. Definitely enjoy stopping by the Yacht Club for a classic dive bar experience when I'm in Atlanta.

While in the five points neighborhood, I stumbled upon this gem of a dive bar. Barely 6pm on a Friday that brought its fair share of rain and sunshine, ducking into this spot was a great choice. I initially stopped in to use their restroom as my friend was on a deep dive through cds and vinyls across the street (in a place that didn't have restrooms - dernit). After that pit stop, I came back out and realized that this spot was really on fire! The bar was lined with chatty guests, at least 3 of the booths had parties in them and outside, some guests lingered enjoying the Sun which decided to come out for us. So I figured, "why the heck not?" and opted to chill for a bit. The bartender noticed me and assisted me so quickly, despite also handling everyone else at the bar. So appreciated! I decided to go for a raspberry sour + an order of cracklins,, and opted to sit outside. My beer was ice cold and the cracklins hot af and so fresh. They were still crackling when I got them! They were also very well-seasoned. I loved that the bartender stuck his head out the door to see if I enjoyed them :) When my friend joined me and I told her that they also had boiled peanuts (a fave of us both) she decided to grab an order + a beer. Man, I'm so glad she went for the boiled peanuts because they were delicious! I don't love everyone's boiled peanuts, lol but these were legit and so flavorful. I ended up buying two more orders, one for home and another for the moment we finished polishing off the first order lol. Such a cool, down to earth vibe. I can't wait to come back and try more of the teams' faves. Yum!

I was in Little 5 Points for a concert at Variety Playhouse so we needed a place for quick dinner before the show. There's plenty of space inside and it's pretty quiet which we appreciated. You can seat yourself and then order at the bar. I got a draft of PBR for $3 (love a deal) and the jerk chicken philly. The food came out super quick and super hot! I absolutely loved my sandwich, the jerk chicken had so much flavor and the onions and peppers were grilled to perfection. My tater tots on the side were pretty yummy too. Overall, a really chill dive bar I will definitely be returning to!

Dive bar indeed and we stopped in to continue visiting all the fun spots in Little Five Points. It was busy on a Friday night but we found spots at the bar where we could see the television well enough to cheer for the mixed curling between Sweden and Switzerland. Nice big tv and this would definitely be a fun spot for any local sports event. Beer was cold, service was decent and the Yacht Club (despite the fact that there isn't open water for 250 or so miles) is a fun hangout. [Review 16687 overall - 462 in Georgia - 199 of 2022.]

Love this place. Cozy feel but I've never been to a dive bar with food as spectacular as the BBQ was here. Bartender was friendly and had a fine selection of beer and liquors. If you are a fan of dive bars or BBQ I can not recommend this place more. Whenever I'm in the area this is a place I make a point to visit.

The Euclid Avenue Yacht Club is the ideal place to start your night when going to a concert at The Variety Playhouse. The food and drinks were delicious. We started with boiled peanuts (top notch) and then shared a fish sandwich (with American Cheese) and fries. Our friends had the chicken sliders. The food came out quickly. You have to order from the bar but the staff is efficient and attentive. The place is comfortable and clean. The scene is as you would expect for L5P. If you're from out of town, think biker meets hip hop with a twist of dude. We always go here when in the neighborhood and will go back.

This place rules. My girlfriend, a group of friends and I hit this up after a show while in town and holy cow! I can't wait to go back! The food was fantastic, the staff were superb and the old fashioned's were stellar.

The food is so delicious! I recommend the fried cod sandwich with tater tots. The food was hot and fresh. The atmosphere in the restaurant is cozy, and they have a great bar. Our server was very nice, and she took good care of us. I definitely plan on returning!

The 5 Points of Sail Explained

The 5 points of sail describe the angles a sailboat can sail relative to the wind direction, and we have a name for each of them:

  • Close-hauled: Sailing close to the wind
  • Close reach: Bearing away from the wind
  • Beam reach: The wind comes from the side
  • Broad reach: Sailing away from the wind
  • Running: Sailing downwind.

In this article, I’ll explain the points of sail from Close-hauled upwind sailing to Running downwind. We’ll look at the technicalities of each point and how to trim the sails accordingly. We will also walk through some of the nautical terms associated to make sure you are up to speed. Finally, I’ll share some of my best tips and strategies for downwind sailing with you!

The 5 points of sail explained

I made this points of sail diagram for your convenience. It illustrates the sailing angles to the wind and is helpful to identify the term for what point of sail you are on.

Looking at the illustration, you might wonder why the no-go zone isn’t included as a sixth point. The reason is that you can’t sail a boat directly into the wind. So, technically, it isn’t a point of sail. However, I will include it anyway since you head through this zone every time you make a tack.

I will talk about “true” and “apparent” wind when describing the points, so let’s take a quick look at what that actually means before we move on.

True and apparent wind briefly explained :

True wind speed is the actual wind velocity measured by a stationary object. Apparent wind speed is the wind velocity perceived by an object moving through the air, such as a boat or yourself. In other words, apparent wind speed combines the actual wind and the effective wind created by your motion.

This element is crucial to understand when sailing and of course, I have an excellent article on the topic: Learn more about the difference between true and apparent wind.

NO-GO-ZONE or In Irons – Head to wind

The no-go-zone is where the sail’s angle to the wind prevents it from generating lift. When a sail can’t generate lift, the boat stops, and the sails will start to flop around. This zone is usually about 35 – 45 degrees from the eye of the wind in both directions. That means you always have an area of 70 – 90 degrees towards the direction of the wind that you can’t ‘sail.

There are two occasions you want to have your bow into the wind, though .  When hoisting, lowering, and reefing the sails and briefly during a tack. A tack is when you move the sails from one side of the boat to the other as fast as possible to avoid losing the boat’s speed.

1. Close Hauled – Sailing close to the wind

Sailing close hauled is sailing as close to the wind as your boat allows.

Your sails are sheeted in tight, and if you change your course a little bit too much into the wind, your sails will start flopping, and you will lose your speed. The boat is heeling over to the side, which, for some, can be intimidating.

This point of sail is often called  beating  – with good reason.

The sail trim is crucial, and the person at the helm has to focus on keeping his point. This is also the point of sail where your apparent wind will be the highest in relation to the wind. You will often have waves and swell pounding into the bow, which can be challenging in rough conditions.

Learn more about  how high a sailboat can point in this article.

2. Close Reach – Bearing away from the wind

Once you bear away from being close-hauled, you get into close reach. You are now sailing between 50 and 80 degrees, give or take. This is a much easier point of sail as the person at the helm doesn’t have to be as sharp on the course, and you can ease off the sheets and let the sails out a bit.

The boat will usually calm down when bearing away from beating, and you’ll sail faster, too. The apparent wind strength is still higher than the actual wind, making it an efficient way of working yourself toward the wind without knocking your teeth out!

3. Beam Reach – The fastest point of sail

You are on a sweet beam reach once you bear away from a close reach and get to 90 degrees. This is a fast point of sail for most sailboats. The wind is coming from the side, and your true and apparent wind will be at a delta and show about the same speed.

Sheet your sails out about halfway, and the boat will sail fast and comfortably with excellent stability.

4. Broad Reach – Rig your boom preventer

Continuing to bear off from 90 degrees puts you on a broad reach down to about 135 degrees off the wind. You can now ease the sheets as you turn and will feel the wind speed decrease. This is because you are sailing away from it, and your apparent wind speed is now less than your actual wind speed.

Broad reaching is a very comfortable point of sail due to the lack of heeling. On a broad reach, the sail’s shape is less critical, and trimming in a bit of a belly will make it more powerful. You can accomplish this by adjusting the sheeting angle. Move the cars forward until the leech of the headsail is closed. A fluttering sail is an ineffective sail.

A broad reach is a comfortable point of sail; if conditions allow for it, it is the perfect time to get out your light-wind sail!

It is wise to rig up a boom preventer when sailing in any direction away from the wind. A boom preventer is a line run from a strong point ahead of the mast to the end of the boom. Its job is to prevent the boom from swinging over in case of a sudden, fatal wind change.

5. Running – Sailing downwind

The last point of sail is called running. Running is when you are sailing between 135 and 180 degrees downwind. At this point, you need to trim your sails by easing your sails out as much as possible. Be careful not to let the mainsail chafe against the spreaders and shrouds. Rig up your preventer now if you haven’t already!

As you continue past 135 degrees, you’ll see that the apparent wind speed decreases until you sail dead downwind. You’ll also notice that when you bear away from a broad reach, the mainsail will start blocking the wind to the headsail, and you will struggle to make it stand up.

Closing the circle of sailing points

When continuing around the running point, a gybe will put you over on a broad reach again on the opposite tack, and you can continue through the points up towards a close reach again. Then, making a tack will complete your 360-degree circle! Remember that the apparent wind increases when you get past 90 degrees from the wind.

You can read more about different types of sails here.

Sailing through our points of sail – Example

Like I said in the beginning, when we talk about the points of sail, we refer to the wind angles in relation to your sailing direction, not the compass rose.

Let’s take a quick, simplified example:

You are sailing on a course 0 degrees north. The wind is blowing straight from 90 degrees east onto the starboard side of your boat. This means you are sailing on a  starboard tack  on a  beam reach .

A friend tells you about this awesome beach bar not far away, and you want to change your course about 135 degrees to starboard to get there. This means you will eventually get the wind on the other side of the boat as you turn your wheel over to starboard. As you approach a close reach and get close-hauled, you tighten in your sheets and flatten your sails to keep the speed and momentum.

Once you get past 45 degrees heading, your sails will flap as you turn your bow straight into the wind or the  no-go zone . Now you need to make a  tack.  This means moving your sails over from port to starboard.

As your heading gets close to 135 degrees, the sails will fill with wind again, and you are now sailing  close-hauled  on a  port tack.

You also notice that the wind feels stronger because you’re sailing upwind.

Nautical terms used when sailing and navigating

Port Tack –  When the wind blows on the port side of your sails

Starboard Tack –  When the wind blows on the starboard side of your sails

Tacking  – When you steer the boat from a starboard tack to a port tack and vice versa  upwind .

Gybing-  When you steer the boat from a starboard tack to a port tack and vice versa  downwind .

Heeling  – When the wind fills the sails and leans the boat over to the side.

Boom preventer –  A line or rope tied to the end of the boom and led forward of the mast to prevent it from swinging over when sailing off the wind.

Overpowered –  When wind surpasses the boat’s ability to steer a straight course. This typically happens when you try to sail the vessel above your hull speed, carry too much sail area in strong winds, or trim your sails poorly.

Hull Speed  – The speed at which your boat is sailing when its created wave has the same length as the hull’s water length. Displacement sailboats get hard to steer when going faster than this.

You can learn more sailing terms in my sailor’s guide to nautical terms here .

Final words

There you have it! You now know your points of sailing and that they refer to the vessel’s angle relative to the direction of the true wind. You also learned that a sailboat cannot sail directly into the wind. Finally, we reviewed some good sailing options downwind and looked at some relevant sailing terminology. Now you have to hoist the sails and head out at sea!

FAQ – The 5 Points of Sail

What are the parts of a sail called.

The parts of a sail and their functions are as follows:

  • Tack : This is the lower forward corner of the sail, anchoring it at its front bottom edge.
  • Clew : Located at the lower aft (rear) corner, the clew is the point where the sail’s bottom and aft edges meet.
  • Head : This is the sail’s top corner, opposite the tack and clew.
  • Foot : The foot is the bottom edge of the sail, stretching between the tack and the clew.
  • Luff : The luff refers to the sail’s front edge, running vertically between the tack and the head.
  • Leech : The leech is the aft or rear edge of the sail, extending from the clew to the head.
  • Telltales : These are small ropes, bands, or flags attached to the sail, which provide visual cues about the airflow around the sail.
  • Battens : Battens are rigid elements, such as slates or tubes, inserted into pockets on the mainsail. They help maintain the sail’s shape and extend its lifespan.

You can read more in-depth about the parts of a sail here .

What are sail poles called?

“Spar” is the general term for a pole made of a solid material like wood or metal used to support a boat’s sail.

These include:

  • Mast : A tall, vertical pole that supports the sails.
  • Boom : A horizontal pole attached to the mast. It extends from the bottom of the mainsail, helping to control the angle and shape of the sail.
  • Spinnaker Pole : A pole used to extend the foot of a spinnaker sail away from the boat, helping to stabilize and maximize the surface area of the sail.
  • Whisker Pole: A pole used to hold out the clew of a headsail, like a jib or genoa, when sailing downwind.
  • Bowsprit : Though not always considered a pole, a bowsprit is a spar extending from the vessel’s bow and typically used to support the tack of a headsail.
  • Gaff : In traditional gaff-rigged sailboats, a gaff is a horizontal pole that, along with the boom, supports the top of a four-cornered sail.

You can read more about the different parts of a sailboat here .

Which point of sail is the fastest?

Beam Reach is the fastest, easiest, and most comfortable point of sail for most sailboats. The wind comes in from the side, and you have your sails about halfway out. When your sails are well trimmed, this is an efficient point that will allow you to sail fast with excellent stability in your boat.

Is it better to sail upwind or downwind?

What’s best between sailing upwind and downwind depends on where your destination is. Remember that your boat won’t be able to sail directly upwind but at an angle of about 35 degrees to your apparent wind direction.

Sailing downwind is comfortable, but ensure your boom preventer is in place for the deepest sailing angles. Also, remember that you will require more wind to sail downwind efficiently as your apparent wind speed is lower than the true wind speed. With enough wind, however, broad-reaching is a fantastic point of sail.

What are the three main points of sail?

The three main points of sail are:

  • Beating: When sailing as close to the wind as your boat allows, typically 35-45 degrees.
  • Reaching: Includes Close reach, Beam Reach, and Broad reaching, which means you are sailing between 50 and 120 degrees.
  • Running: When you are sailing at lower angles than 120 degrees.

Euclid Avenue Yacht Club

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

We had tickets for the "Variety Playhouse" later that evening (pretty much across the street) and thought we were early (5:30pm) when we walked into the Yacht Club for a drink and a bite to eat. We were mistaken. Luckily nobody sat at the reading... table upfront, near the window, so we, the 4 of us, took over one end of the table. Soon we were joined by a handful of locals trying to finish the days crossword in the newspaper. Was this ever a funny bunch. In the mean time an endless line of interesting characters past by on the other side of the window. Anyway, what I am trying to say is that this tavern is awfully cozy and right smack in the center of "little five points". It's very cozy, staff is wonderfully friendly and helpful in deterring drink and food. I had the Philly cheese and my wife the brisket. Both were excellent. By the time we left it was standing room only. We love this place!!!!!!!! More

The staff at this bar is top notch A+. From the management to the barback, everyone is so accommodating and friendly. Best bar in L5P by far.

Very good pub with a good selection of national beer!nice place, nice people and very good food choise!personaly i love the BBQ burrito associate to a iced stagional Pumpinkg beer!for sure i'll cooming back

Nice beer selection, friendly patrons, and a cool place to beat the Atlanta heat with a cold drink in hand. Half of the place is non-smoking, but no doors to separate the halves. Check it out if you are in the little 5 points area.... Note: Since Atlanta is not near any body of water that supports Yachts, it is not really a club per say. Just a funky name. More

A great selection of people in a compact and memorabilia filled bar that serves an interesting variety of beers and has a small and specialised selection of freshly made food . Full of eccentricity (in the nicest possible way). It looks very popular with five... point locals. Staff are friendly, nothing is too much trouble and you won't go thirsty! Its well worth the visit to five points to enjoy this gem in the evenings... More

Great spot in the heart of Little Five Points. Some people bring children in but I would not recommend it. One side can get pretty smoky. Beer prices are very reasonable and the food is actually really good. Get the tater tots! Perfect spot for... people watching...there's a large window often open to the street on nice days. And always something to see in L5P. Around the holidays, don't miss the gingerbread house contest - hilarious. More

Great people watching. Relaxed, friendly environment. Service was great. Had a few beers and some sliders before a show. Food was great and came out quickly. Highly recommend.

Surprising find during an impromptu visit to Little Five Points for a late Sunday lunch with our adult son. The brisket was tender and the Mac and cheese thick and creamy. Our son had the Mac Daddy burger, topped with Mac and cheese. Good selection... of beers on tap in a funky setting. Very reasonably priced. Recommended! More

You have to try the BBQ egg rolls, they are awesome. The staff was super friendly and atmosphere is great. It is in an interesting neighborhood. Make sure you pay for your parking at the meter.

Laid back and cozy, this is my favorite bar in Atlanta. Tucked into Little Five Points, this is clearly a locals haunt and hints at the many amazing times it has seen. A place to go grab some drinks and actual good unpretentious food, the... staff rocks. We enjoyed the food (quesadillas and Philly), the tots are supreme and the service was outstanding. A must go. If you drink with your pinky hoisted in the air or appreciate sterile spots with no character, steer clear - this is not for you. Otherwise, have a great time. More

Was getting the Atlanta tour from a local and guided to this place twice in one weekend. I can see why. The funky nautical vibe is not your average bar. It's way more pub than dive but never the less it's a cool scene for... drinks and heard the food is on the mark as well. My first hand experience was with a comfortable atmosphere, cold beers and lively conversation. This place rocks. Drinks are fairly priced, too. More

I love this place. Service, food, people watching at window seat. Amazing. Thanks again for a great meal and environment. Highly recommend!

I was visiting from out of town so I asked someone where the locals go and they recommended this place. The food was reasonably priced and the drinks were definitely not weak! The canned beer prices were pretty cheap for the tall boys. The atmosphere... was great as well. More

I met up with some Atlanta friends to see Patti Smith at the Variety Theater. Immediately after the show, a ton of people from the theater headed straight to the Yacht Club for late night drinks and food. Most of the people in the place... were locals, and it was hipster-funky crowd. The bar is not too big, but its not too small, either. There are large and small tables, a few bar height tables, and a dark, boozy, dive bar feel to it. It was like a college bar from the 1980's, with lots of different beers on tap. I had the veggie quesadilla, which was delicious, One of my friends ordered the sweet potato tater tots, and all she got was a plastic basket of less then 20 tots. Her food cost almost as much as mine, but I received 10x the amount of food, so order carefully. More

I was staying one night in the area (Poncey-Highland) and was overwhelmed by the restaurant choices along Ponce De Leon, N. Highland Ave and, of course, throughout LFP. It was a though decision but after some wandering about I decided this was the place for... dinner. What a great decision! The ambiance and decor was from another era; staff and regulars were laid back and the place appeared to be frozen in time--maybe the late 1960s or early 1970s. The sidewalk chalk board listing daily specials caught my eye; how could I go wrong with a dish called a Cincinnati Three Way? Best plate of pasta ever--down to the kitchy oyster cracker garnish! Incredibly helpful & chatty waitress recommended a local dark ale which was perfect! Learned a lot about the 'hood and my hotel; also picked up a great lodging tip for my next trip here. More

Euclid Avenue Yacht Club

LITTLE FIVE POINTS — Iconic dive bar Euclid Avenue Yacht Club reopened earlier in June after closing for more than a year due to the pandemic. Former owner Donald “Hippie” Hinamon sold the business to Manuel “Manny” Maloof last fall, who owns Grant Park bar Manny’s . Prior to the health crisis, Hinamon and Maloof had been discussing a possible deal with Maloof becoming a major investor in the bar.

It appears not much has changed in terms of the Yacht Club’s layout or decor. Maloof made a few necessary updates to the bar’s plumbing, grease traps, and toilets in the restrooms to make those Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant. Some new dishes may also be added to the menu. Hinamon opened the Yacht Club in 1987 inside a former jewelry store along Euclid Avenue. Over the years, the bar has built up a very loyal band of regulars who come to shoot the breeze over cheap canned beer or dive bar classics like $5 hurricanes. [Instagram/EATL]

ALPHARETTA — A third location of Malaysian street food restaurant Food Terminal , owned by the family behind Sweet Hut Bakery, opens early next year in the former Fuddruckers space on North Point Parkway, What Now Atlanta reports. First opened in 2017 on Buford Highway in Chamblee, a second location opened in 2019 along the Marietta Street Artery in Atlanta. [WNA]

PONCEY-HIGHLAND — Illuminarium , the walk-through, virtual reality experience exploring the African continent, opens July 1 on Somerset Terrace off of the Eastside Beltline trail. In addition to the exhibits, Illuminarium also features a bar serving cocktails, beer, and wine and tapas and an all-day, full-service cafe offering salads, flatbreads, rice bowls, paninis, and burgers. • Little Five Points Meet the generation of Atlantans who helped make Little Five Points what it is today

It’s impossible to miss the counterculture energy that thrives within the colorful buildings in Atlanta’s iconic Little Five Points.

Brick buildings that house quirky businesses, vintage shops, diverse restaurants and three theatre companies. You’ll notice bright murals, hand-painted business signs, unique logos and a lot of color; colorful walls, colorful hair, colorful clothes.

> Related:  ‘Little Five Points Had To Fight To Survive’

Hipsters and anarchists mesh with budding musicians and artists, as well as tourists, travelers, and teens from Atlanta’s suburbs in this unique enclave of independently owned businesses.

The neighborhood’s tagline “Everyone is welcome” is evident with people from all walks of life browsing the vast inventory at Junkman’s Daughter, posing for photographs in front of vibrant murals or walking through the Vortex skull on their way to eat a burger.

What might surprise these visitors is just how stable Little Five Points has been as an eclectic alternative business district in Atlanta for more than four decades.

Like, the bookstore that Linda Bryant opened in 1974 when she was just 25 years old, Charis Books and More. After living all around the world, Bryant moved to Atlanta in search of communal living.

She was involved in Young Life, a social justice action oriented religious organization that worked with students from Bass High School. Through this work, she was often in Little Five Points working with students at Moreland Elementary.

yacht 5 points

The business district at the time was mostly vacant buildings. She remembers a gun shop, a pawn shop, a furniture store and the notorious Redwood Lounge, which was known for drunkenness, prostitution and brawls. It wasn’t uncommon to witness fights or be propositioned at the bar in the evening.

Despite that, Bryant decided to open her bookstore in the heart of Little Five Points, next to a community center called The Broken Wall, where teens could drop in and feel safe. Bryant wanted to build off this idea, creating a bookstore where she could foster community.

“The whole thing was kind of surreal,” she remembers. “We didn’t know anything about business.”

Built On A Dream

But that was the spirit of Little Five Points. Individuals had a dream and they pursued it without thinking about whether or not it would succeed. For example, Pam Majors really was a junkman’s daughter, and she started Junkman’s Daughter in 1982 with dead stock that her parents had spent 40 years collecting.

Now 36 years later, her son runs the creative store in Little Five Points. Their lack of business savvy led to eclectic businesses based on people’s passions and on the needs of the community. A surprising number of these businesses are still thriving.

yacht 5 points

Little Five wasn’t always a business district. In 1890s, the neighborhood had a few mansions that sat on estates with big lots. The iconic strip of businesses with The Porter and Criminal Records had once been the front yard of Alfred Colquitt’s estate, Georgia’s governor from 1876 to 1882 and an active secessionist in the Civil War. Colquitt Avenue now leads into Little Five Points.

When the city of Edgewood, now known as the Candler Park and Edgewood neighborhoods, was incorporated into the city in 1908 the trolley line was extended from Inman Park down McClendon to provide a route from the newly annexed city to downtown. It was only with the trolly line that businesses and homes started popping up along this new thoroughfare.

At the time, Atlanta had one major shopping district downtown at Five Points. When this new business district emerged two and a half miles east of downtown in the 1910s, it became known as Little Five Points for the five points that intersect at the center of the business district.

Moreland Avenue and Euclid Avenue each provided two points, and Seminole Avenue, which is now paved over as Davis Plaza, meeting in the center to provide the fifth point.

It was only natural that this node of trolley lines to and from downtown and toward Emory would evolve into a business district that served residents from Inman Park, Edgewood and Druid Hills. It gave them an alternative to shopping downtown.

An article in the Atlanta Constitution Real Estate Review from 1923 explains, “The little community of merchants at ‘Little Five Points’ seems prepared to furnish almost anything that a customer might call for … saving many trips to town and making it possible for residents to procure almost any article desired that formerly could only be gotten from the big stores in the heart of the city.”

yacht 5 points

The business district boomed. In his book, “The Highs and Lows of Little Five,” Robert Hartle Jr. explains that by its height in the 1950s, Little Five Points had three grocery stores, three barbershops, four drugstores, and three movie theatres. This economic prosperity didn’t last long.

As cars became more popular, so did living farther from the city center. ‘White flight’ reared its head in Atlanta, as many white families fled desegregation by moving to the suburbs to create homogeneous neighborhoods outside of Atlanta in Cobb and Gwinnett counties.

The Department of Transportation noticed a need. The affluent white families that left the city now needed a way to to quickly get back to downtown Atlanta so in 1961, the DOT proposed I-485 to run north and south and the Stone Mountain Tollway to run east from downtown.

The proposed Stone Mountain Tollway would run directly through the neighborhoods that fed into Bass High school, which pulled from Poncey Highland, Inman Park, Little Five Points, Candler Park, and Lake Claire.

By the 1970s, the city had demolished 554 homes from these neighborhoods for the proposed freeway and the residents within these neighborhoods organized, creating BOND, the Bass Organization for Neighborhood Development which was committed to improving the residential neighborhoods and fighting off the road.

yacht 5 points

At this time, the energy of activism and resistance in America was palpable. Jane Jacobs had published her landmark book ‘The Death and Life of Great American Cities’ in 1961, inspiring a new movement of urban pioneers committed to reviving the American Cities that had been forsaken in a mass exodus when people used cars to move further away and live more private lives.

People were protesting the Vietnam War, fighting for women’s rights, and the national civil rights movement had a stronghold in Atlanta. As Inman Park resident Midge Sweet remembers, “You were supposed to be a part of a community. You were supposed to be entrepreneurial.”

Getting Involved

Young people moved into the neighborhoods surrounding Little Five Points and did just that.

They created a community invested in urban living and created businesses to sustain themselves. With the proposed freeway cutting through these historic neighborhoods, they could find inexpensive homes and would also have more clout in protesting the freeway if they owned the land.

In 1972, Don Bender and his wife Judy moved from Druid Hills to Candler. Like many of the young people that moved in, Bender quickly realized that the key to creating a thriving neighborhood, was to revitalize its commercial district: Little Five Points.

So he, along with Candler Park Resident Kelly Jordan and others, joined the Little Five Points Businessmen’s Association.

“They were still called the Little Five Points Businessmen’s Association, even though there were a few beauty shops owned and run by women at the time,” Jordan recalled.

yacht 5 points

When Bender and Jordan joined the association with the hopes to reform it, many of the current business owners had owned their businesses since the 1930s and were nearing retirement.

While one might be in awe of the people strolling around Little Five Points today, Jordan recalls:

The folks that were here from the old days, they were characters, every one of them.”

When Bender joined the Businessmen’s Association, he kept a tally that noted every member of the business association and whether or not they would vote for or against the road the proposed tollway.

When he started his tally, the vast majority were for the road, hoping the proposed Stone Mountain Tollway would bring in more people and money and lead to a rise in property values.

Bender became Chair of Membership for the Little Five Points Business Association and started recruiting new, younger members that he knew would vote against the road. The neighborhood votes eventually outnumbered the old time business owner votes and Bender knew that Little Five Points would never support the road.

The business members Bender recruited weren’t what one might expect. Rather than being experienced business people opening franchises of national chains, they were often wide-eyed dreamers that had no experience with business whatsoever but lived in the surrounding neighborhoods and either started a business because they had a passion or because they saw a need.

Each new member was committed to creating a collective spirit of independence and local living in the most sincere and intentional way.

Whenever the surrounding communities needed something, the residents in the Bass neighborhoods would figure out how to solve it. John F. Sweet became a lawyer because he was always one of the people figuring out how to solve problems. He often helped people buy their homes, start nonprofits, and even represented Linda Bryant of Charis Books in the adoption of her son.

yacht 5 points

When Sweet bought his home in Inman Park in 1971 he had to pool together $23,000 in cash, borrowing from friends to scrape by. The intown neighborhoods were redlined. The big mansions of Inman Park were carved up into apartments that charged weekly rent and crime was rampant. His house had rats and there was no centralized heating or air conditioning.

“I damn well sure didn’t feel safe,” Sweet exclaimed after recalling an incident where he said he received a death threat after trying to stand up for a woman who was being beaten.

Potential inner city homeowners had difficulty qualifying for loans and usually had to buy their home in cash, often pooling together money borrowed from friends and family. Sweet saw these barriers and decided to do something about it.

yacht 5 points

‘How Do We Make This A Place Where You Want To Live?’

In 1972 Sweet and Stan Wyse founded the Bass Organization for Neighborhood Development, or BOND Community Federal Credit Union, the country’s first neighborhood credit union with $54.

That same year, Don Bender of Candler Park helped start Atlanta Intown Development Corporation. A group of neighbors would pool together their money to buy dilapidated homes, and renovate them before selling them to new residents and using the profits to buy another property.

yacht 5 points

In 1975, Bender decided to shift focus from residential properties to the business district of Little Five Points.

He got 30 investors to chip in and buy eight storefront properties along Euclid Avenue, one of which was the notorious Redwood Lounge, where Little Five Corner Tavern is today. The Redwood Lounge was the Wild West.

People mentioned stabbings, prostitution and gunshots.

yacht 5 points

After three months of renovations and designs from Kelly Jordan, Bender opened the Little Five Points Community Pub in 1977.

They served sandwiches and salads and people could drink beer and wine.

“People were so ready for it,” Bender recalls.

Maynard Jackson and members of city council came to the opening. The pub became a place where neighbors could gather. They would discuss local politics over and listen to live music.

There were poetry readings and theater presentations.

It was a place “where you were welcomed as a non conformist,” Bender explains.

“We had high minded principles that we really put into practice,” Jordan explains. “The pub wanted employees to be part of running the place and we had larger, societal issues, like bringing in health care and things that would serve people. John Sweet started up the credit union. We wanted to serve people.”

In this spirit, they created their own institutions. Every time the community needed something, they figured it out.

“It was a philosophical point of view that we should not be dependent on outside investors,” Inman Park resident Midge Sweet recalls.

None of us knew it would develop into a big trendy place. We didn’t want that. We didn’t have that vision.” Bryant says of Little Five Points.

“We just wanted to make the schools better, to keep things from being torn down. We wanted to integrate. The human stuff – how do we make this a place where you want to live and be?”

yacht 5 points

At one of the earlier Little Five Points Businessmen’s Association meetings, Jordan remembers talking to Mr. Finley of Finley Hardware.

The younger members were trying to convince him to update his inventory to cater to the young people that were moving in and renovating old, dilapidated houses.

Finley gruffly responded, “Listen, you whippersnappers, I’m 75 years old and I’m ready to retire. You need to quit telling me what to do and you need to put your money where your mouth is. Do it yourself.” and Jordan remembers thinking, “He’s absolutely right.”

And the young whippersnappers did just that. They fought to create a sustainable local economy with creative and funky businesses and space for artists, but also bring in businesses that would meet their daily needs.

We weren’t really trying to reinvent the wheel. We were trying to change a flat tire,” Jordan said.

They created their own newspaper and credit union and had a local pharmacy. When they started having children, they recruited a pediatrician for the neighborhood.

yacht 5 points

Continual Change

In way, the new whippersnappers of the 1970s were returning Little Five Points to its heyday.

When Kelly Jordan helped investors buy the Point Center building, he worked to bring in a dentist for the community. A dentist had previously been in the building decades earlier, but at in the 1970s Jordan needed a visionary who could see past the crumbling state of the 1920s building and imagine what it could be.

He found Richard Shapiro from Brooklyn, New York who was graduating from Emory and looking to start a practice.

“There were holes in the floor, holes in the ceiling, squatters living in the basement, and I said, ‘I love it,” Shapiro remembers of his first walk through the Point Center building where his office still is, almost 40 years later.

The 1920s building reminded him of New York and he saw Little Five Points’ potential. He was excited to see the pedestrians walking past the window.

The large but identifiable group of residents from the surrounding neighborhoods were actively engaged in bettering their community and for many of them they were united in the fight to defend their neighborhoods against a common enemy: be it big government, the road, MARTA or corporate investment.

For many, they were simply fighting to create an urban lifestyle that they had experienced in Northern cities.

Shapiro eventually helped lead the fight to get Little Five Point zoned as Atlanta’s first Neighborhood Commercial District in the 1990s, protecting it from big box stores and limiting the number of restaurants and boutiques that can open in the area.

For Jordan, he was following what he saw possible in his hometown of Summerville, Georgia.

“What we were doing isn’t very radical,” Kelly Jordan says with a smile. “It’s very historical. Trying to bring back community and build actual community.”

He explains, “We wanted to try to get as many of your day-to-day needs addressed in Little Five Points and that’s what a neighborhood commercial center should do, or the downtown of a little town should do.”

yacht 5 points

A lot of the businesses filled needs but also had a cultural angle. Charis is a bookstore, but it’s also a movement, promoting feminist literature and creating spaces where ideas can be shared and community can be built.

Sevananda is a business, but it also has a cooperative structure that seeks to promote healthy eating and non-corporate food. Many of the places that opened in Little Five Points were created to serve in their own way. Eat Your Vegetables was a restaurant located where the Vortex is today and it served healthy options.

Crystal Blue sells stones and crystals and educates people about their benefits. Outback Bikes provides transportation options. Health care professionals have remained in the neighborhood for decades, sometimes seeing the grandchildren of the children they first saw in the 1970s.

While Little Five Points is known for its counterculture vibe, there is an amazing and stunning stability over time. For more than a century, Little Five Points has remained a business node two and a half miles east of downtown. Today it still fulfills residents everyday needs, in the same way it did in 1923.

You can eat, shop, go to the post office, get your groceries, see a theater production, get a loan, clean your teeth, align your back and visit the doctor. It originally had a local pharmacy and it still does today. Many of the locally owned businesses from the 1970s and 80s are still thriving.

After 44 years in Little Five Points, Charis Bookstore is moving. They are moving to Agnes Scott’s campus, and as Bryant reflects on watching women and their children grow up over the years while visiting the shop and participating in Charis Circle, she feels a glimmer of hope for the future that reminds her of the energy she felt in Little Five Points so many years ago.

“I don’t know where the next frontier will be or where the next pioneers will go, but I’m proud to know some of them.” Bryant says.

These 3 lesser-known cruise lines offer amazing voyages on sail-powered ships

Gene Sloan

There is nothing quite as magical — or romantic — as a cruise on a sailing ship.

To stand on the deck of a vessel topped with dozens of billowing sails, propelled through the waves by the power of the wind alone, is to go back in time to an earlier age of travel, when crossing the world's oceans was as adventurous as it was challenging.

It's an experience that's all about the feeling of the wind in your hair, the lean of the vessel (known as the heel) as it's pushed by the wind and the sway from the waves (which is actually smoother than what you get on a motor ship).

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

In contrast to what you'll find on so many motor-powered ships, cruising on a masted ship is about the simple thrill of traveling across the sea and not about all the many attractions you'll find on board.

Only a handful of small cruise brands — so small that you might never have heard of them — offer trips on sailing ships. Here, we look at the three biggest players in this niche subset of the cruise industry.

Sea Cloud Cruises

If it's an authentic, old-style sailing experience you want, then Sea Cloud Cruises is the line for you. The Germany-based company operates three large sailing ships where the sails are unfurled by hand, just as they were on sailing ships centuries ago.

On the biggest of these three vessels, the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit , 18 deckhands scurry high into the rigging on sea days to manually untie and prepare the sails, an amazing sight. Unveiled in 2021 , it's a full-rigged, three-masted sailing ship of the sort that hasn't been common on the world's oceans for more than a century.

Sea Cloud Cruises' two other vessels — Sea Cloud 2 and Sea Cloud — are smaller but offer a similar show as the sails are set by hand the old-fashioned way. The former is a 23-year-old, three-masted barque propelled by 23 sails (five fewer than Sea Cloud Spirit); the latter is a 93-year-old, four-masted barque with 30 sails and a storied past.

Now configured to carry 64 paying passengers, Sea Cloud was originally the private yacht of Postum Cereals heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post and her husband, the famed financier E. F. Hutton. At the time, the vessel was the largest private yacht in the world. It later served the U.S. Navy as a weather ship during World War II, after which it became the presidential yacht for the Dominican Republic. It only began sailing as a cruise vessel in the 1980s.

If you have money to spare, you can still book Post's opulent private quarters on Sea Cloud, now its owner's suite. It'll set you back around $5,000 per day per couple. Her husband's slightly smaller quarters are also available to book at a similar rate.

Post, the wealthiest woman in the U.S. during her lifetime, notably also built Mar-a-Lago, the massive estate in Florida that is now the official residence of Donald Trump.

Sea Cloud Cruises is the most all-inclusive and upscale of the three brands listed in this story, with pricing to match. Expect to pay nearly $1,000 per person per day or more for many sailings.

Sea Cloud Cruises' three vessels offer a diverse array of sailings in the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, the Canary Islands and Morocco, the Caribbean or along the west coast of Central America.

Windstar Cruises

Founded in the 1980s, Windstar Cruises got its start as a sailing ship line. While it now operates traditional motor-powered ships, too, voyages on sailing ships are still a big part of its business.

Three of the Seattle-based brand's six vessels — Wind Spirit, Wind Star and Wind Surf — are sailing vessels, and they all offer a similar yacht-like, small-ship experience.

Two of the three vessels (Wind Spirit and Wind Star) are particularly intimate, measuring 5,407 tons and carrying just 148 passengers with every berth full.

The line's third sailing vessel, Wind Surf, is nearly three times the size at 14,745 tons. It's one of the biggest sailing ships in the world (only a sister vessel that sails for Club Med is bigger). Wind Surf carries 342 people, an enormous number for a sailing ship.

Unlike on the vessels operated by Sea Cloud, the sails on Windstar's sailing ships aren't unfurled by hand in the old-fashioned way but by the push of a button from the bridge. It's a fully automated system that is much more modern, if less dramatic.

Still, the experience of slicing through the waves by the power of the wind alone on Windstar ships is as glorious and romantic as it is on the Sea Cloud ships.

Windstar Cruises is less all-inclusive and pricey than Sea Cloud but still offers a relatively upscale experience. Its dining program is done in partnership with the food-focused James Beard Foundation, which also brings James Beard Award-winning chefs to the ships regularly for food-themed itineraries.

For an extra $89 per person per day, passengers can also make the experience more all-inclusive with included Wi-Fi, unlimited beer, wine and cocktails, and gratuities (three things that aren't included in regular fares).

The line's three vessels typically spend nearly all of their time sailing in the Mediterranean, the Caribbean or along the west coast of Central America.

Star Clippers

yacht 5 points

Like Sea Cloud and Windstar, Star Clippers operates three sailing vessels that are among the biggest and most elegant sailing vessels in the world.

The belle of the ball at the line is Royal Clipper, a stunning five-masted ship that is billed as the largest square-rigged ship in the world. Its enormous array of 42 sails has a sail area of 56,000 square feet — significantly more than the sails atop any of the Sea Cloud or Windstar vessels. (Only Sea Cloud Spirit comes relatively close with a sail area of 44,100 square feet spread across 28 sails.)

Built to resemble Preussen, a legendary tall ship of the 19th century, the 24-year-old Royal Clipper shares the spotlight at Star Clippers with two smaller sister vessels, Star Flyer and Star Clipper.

Carrying 166 passengers apiece, the smaller vessels were designed to resemble the speedy clipper ships of the 19th century, which were known for their narrow profile and large sail area. Each vessel has a sail area of 36,000 square feet spread across 16 sails, a large amount for the size.

yacht 5 points

When it comes to the setting of sails, Star Clippers vessels offer a level of old-style authenticity that is in between the ships of Sea Cloud and Windstar. Like on Sea Cloud vessels, the sails are pulled into position by a team of deckhands using hand power and winches to tighten the "sheets," or ropes.

Unlike on Sea Cloud vessels, the deck hands don't climb high into the rigging to untie and prepare the sails for winching. That part is done automatically at the push of a button from the bridge, as it is on Windstar vessels.

In one key difference, though, Star Clippers lets passengers harness up and climb into the crow's nest of its vessels — a thrilling experience. Just be prepared for your knees to go a bit wobbly as you get to the top; it's way up there.

Star Clippers sailings are the most affordable option among the three sailing brands, in part because the onboard experience is less all-inclusive and upscale.

The three Star Clippers vessels mostly operate sailings in the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands, the Caribbean and along the west coast of Central America.

Bottom line

It's still possible to get a taste of what traveling the world's oceans was like in the days before motor power. Three small cruise companies — Sea Cloud Cruises, Windstar Cruises and Star Clippers — offer voyages on large sailing ships that are as majestic as anything that has sailed the seas in centuries past.

Luxury yachts and other myths: How Republican lawmakers echo Russian propaganda

A woman examines the rubble of a destroyed building

Two senior Republican lawmakers, the chairs of the House Intelligence and Foreign Affairs committees, say their colleagues are echoing Russian state propaganda against Ukraine.

Researchers who study disinformation say Reps. Mike Turner, R-Ohio, and Michael McCaul, R-Texas, are merely acknowledging what has been clear for some time: Russian propaganda aimed at undermining U.S. and European support for Ukraine has steadily seeped into America’s political conversation over the past decade, taking on a life of its own.

McCaul, chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, told Puck News he thinks “Russian propaganda has made its way into the United States, unfortunately, and it’s infected a good chunk of my party’s base.”

Turner, chair of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, told CNN that anti-Ukraine messages from Russia are “being uttered on the House floor.”

Reps. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, and Mike Turner, R-Ohio, leave a House Republican Conference candidate forum

For the past decade, since Russia’s first military incursion into Ukraine in 2014, Moscow has spread propaganda and disinformation in a bid to undercut U.S. and European military support for Ukraine, according to U.S. and Western officials.

Some of the arguments, distortions and falsehoods spread by Russia have taken root, mostly among right-wing pro-Trump outlets and Republican politicians, researchers say, including that Ukraine’s government is too corrupt to benefit from Western aid and that the Biden family has alleged corrupt ties to Ukraine.

Russia, in keeping with traditional propaganda techniques, seeks to make its case and tarnish Ukraine through a mixture of outright falsehoods, half-truths, inferences or simply amplifying and promoting arguments already being made by American or European commentators and politicians, researchers say.

The propaganda is sometimes spread covertly, through fake online accounts, or openly by Russian officials and state media. As a result, the origin of some allegations or criticisms is often opaque, especially when a certain accusation or perception has gained wide acceptance, leaving no clear fingerprints.

Early in the war, a false story boosted by Russian propaganda — that the U.S. had helped Ukraine build biological weapons labs — gained traction on right-wing social media and was touted by then-Fox News host Tucker Carlson.

Russia also is conducting a parallel propaganda campaign in Europe. Belgium’s prime minister said Thursday that his government is investigating alleged Russian bribes to members of the European Parliament as part of Moscow’s campaign to undermine support for Ukraine. Czech law enforcement officials last month alleged that a former pro-Russian member of Ukraine’s parliament, Viktor Medvedchuk, was behind a Prague-based Russian propaganda network designed to promote opposition to aiding Ukraine.

Here are some examples of Republican lawmakers using arguments often promoted by Russian propaganda:

Buying yachts

When Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with members of Congress behind closed doors in December to appeal for more U.S. help for his country’s troops, some lawmakers raised questions about Ukraine allegedly buying yachts with American aid money.

Zelenskyy made clear that was not the case, according to Republican Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina, a strong supporter of arming Ukraine. “I think the notion of corruption came up because some have said we can’t do it, because people will buy yachts with the money,” Tillis told CNN. “[Zelenskyy] disabused people of those notions.”

Where did the yacht rumor come from?

Pro-Russian actors and websites promoted a narrative alleging Zelenskyy bought two superyachts with U.S. aid dollars. One Russia-based propaganda site, DC Weekly , published a story last November that included photos of two luxury yachts, called Lucky Me and My Legacy , which it alleged were bought for $75 million.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., a vocal opponent of military aid to Ukraine, in November retweeted a post about the alleged yacht purchase from the Strategic Culture Foundation, a Russian-based propaganda outlet directed by Russia’s intelligence services, according to the Treasury Department. The U.S. has imposed sanctions on the organization, accusing it of spreading disinformation and interfering in U.S. elections.

Another outspoken critic of aid to Ukraine, Republican Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio, also made a similar claim.

In a December interview with former President Donald Trump’s White House adviser Steve Bannon, Vance claimed that members of Congress wanted to cut Social Security benefits to provide more aid to Ukraine, and that money would allegedly be used for Zelenskyy’s ministers to “buy a bigger yacht.”

“There are people who would cut Social Security, throw our grandparents into poverty. Why? So that one of Zelenskyy’s ministers can buy a bigger yacht?” Vance said. “Kiss my ass, Steve. It’s not happening.”

Donald Trump looks as J.D. Vance speaks.

The tale of Zelenskyy’s luxury yacht, however, turned out to be totally false . The yachts cited in the DC Weekly article remain up for sale , the owners told The Associated Press.

Two academics at Clemson University, disinformation researchers Darren Linvill and Patrick Warren, found that DC Weekly ran numerous stories copied from other sites that were rewritten by artificial intelligence engines. The articles had bylines with fake names along with headshots copied from other online sites. DC Weekly appeared to be a Russian effort to launder false information through a seemingly legitimate news site as part of an attempt to undermine U.S. support for Ukraine, according to the researchers .

Asked by reporters about Vance’s comments, Tillis said: “I think it’s bullshit. ...If you’re talking about giving money to Ukrainian ministers — total and unmitigated bullshit.”

Greene’s office did not respond to a request for comment.

Vance’s spokesperson said the senator was making a rhetorical point about how he opposed sending U.S. assistance to what he sees as a corrupt country, but was not asserting the yacht stories online were accurate.

Vance’s office referred NBC News to an earlier response to the BBC on the same topic:

“For years, everyone in the West recognized that Ukraine was one of the most corrupt countries in the world. Somehow everyone forgot that just as we started sending them billions of dollars in foreign aid.”

Enabling ‘corruption’

Russian state media for years has painted Ukraine as deeply corrupt, and has argued that the U.S. and its allies are wasting money and military hardware by assisting such an allegedly corrupt government.

“This is absolutely a line that they have pushed, and then once it appears in the Western ecosystem, other [Russian] media picks it up and it gets recycled back,” said Bret Schafer, a senior fellow at the Alliance for Securing Democracy.

This line of argument has gained traction partly because Ukraine does face a genuine corruption problem.

Russia’s effort to focus attention on corruption in Ukraine reflects a long-established propaganda method of using facts or partial truths to anchor a broader assertion or accusation, sometimes making a leap in logic, Schafer and other researchers said. Russia’s message amounts to: Ukraine is corrupt, therefore U.S. and Western aid will be stolen and wasted.

Schafer said it was ironic for Russia, a country mired in corruption and kleptocracy, to be leveling accusations about corruption.

Republican Rep. Mary Miller has said she strongly opposes more assistance for Ukraine because it amounts to sending cash to “corrupt oligarchs.”

“With Zelensky coming to DC this week to ask for more money, I will continue to vote AGAINST sending your tax $$ to corrupt oligarchs in Ukraine for a proxy war that could have ended in ‘22,” Miller wrote in a post on X in December.

The Illinois lawmaker also echoed another assertion that often appears in Russian media, that the Biden administration allegedly undermined efforts by Russia to avoid war with Ukraine.

“A peace deal was on the table that [Ukraine] and [Russia] were both ready to sign, but Biden said NO,” she wrote.

There was in fact no proposed peace agreement that Russia and Ukraine were prepared to sign before Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, according to U.S. and European officials. As Russian troops massed on the border of Ukraine, Western governments urged Russia not to invade and warned there would be economic and diplomatic consequences.

Reuters has reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin rejected a possible deal to avert a war that had been discussed with Kyiv by Russia’s envoy to Ukraine. The Kremlin said the report was inaccurate and has said Russia tried for years to arrive at an understanding with Ukraine.

As for corruption in Ukraine, Zelenskyy has vowed to tackle the problem, sacking senior officials in some recent cases. But some civil society groups have criticized his approach and Ukrainians say corruption is the country’s second-most serious problem, after the Russian invasion, according to a poll conducted last year.

In an annual survey, Transparency International said Ukraine made progress toward addressing the issue and now ranks 104th out of 180 countries on its Corruption Perceptions Index , climbing 12 places up from its previous ranking.

Ukraine is not alone among countries that receive U.S. and other foreign aid but struggle with corruption. Supporters of assisting Ukraine argue it would undermine America’s influence in the world and its humanitarian efforts if Washington withheld foreign aid from every country where there were reports of corruption.

Miller’s office did not respond to a request for comment.

The Biden family and Ukraine

Republicans have repeatedly alleged that President Joe Biden and his son Hunter have corrupt ties to Ukraine, and that they sought $5 million in bribes from the Ukrainian energy company Burisma to protect the firm from an investigation by Ukraine’s prosecutor general.

There is no credible evidence for the allegations. A key source for the accusations against the Bidens is a former FBI informant, Alexander Smirnov, who was arrested in February on federal charges of fabricating the bribery claims. Smirnov says he was fed information by Russian intelligence.

Republicans had heavily promoted Smirnov’s allegations against the Bidens, seeing them as crucial to a planned impeachment effort against the president that has since fizzled .

“In my estimation, that is probably the clearest example of Russian propaganda working its way into the American political system,” said Emerson Brooking, a resident senior fellow at the Digital Forensic Research Lab of the Atlantic Council.

GOP Rep. Paul Gosar of Arizona cited the false bribery allegations in expressing his opposition to providing assistance to Ukraine.

“In exchange for … bribe money from Ukraine, Joe Biden has dished out over $100 billion in taxpayer money to fund the war in Ukraine. I will not assist this corruption by sending more money to the authoritarian Ukrainian regime,” Gosar said in a statement in October.

Gosar’s office did not respond to a request for comment.

Hot on the trail of 56 superyachts owned by Russian oligarchs and subject to seizure

  • Published: Mar. 06, 2022, 2:04 p.m.

superyacht

French authorities have seized the yacht Amore Vero linked to Igor Sechin, a Putin ally who runs Russian oil giant Rosneft, as part of EU sanctions over Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The boat arrived in La Ciotat on Jan. 3 for repairs and was slated to stay until April 1 and was seized to prevent an attempted departure. (AP Photo/Bishr Eltoni) AP

  • The Associated Press

The massive superyacht Dilbar stretches one-and-a-half football fields in length, about as long as a World War I dreadnought. It boasts two helipads, berths for more than 130 people and a 25-meter swimming pool long enough to accommodate another whole superyacht.

Dilbar was launched in 2016 at a reported cost of more than $648 million. Five years on, its purported owner, the Kremlin-aligned Russian oligarch Alisher Usmanov, was already dissatisfied and sent the vessel to a German shipyard last fall for a retrofit reportedly costing another couple hundred million dollars.

That’s where she lay in drydock on Thursday when the United States and European Union announced economic sanctions against Usmanov — a metals magnate and early investor in Facebook — over his ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin and in retaliation for the invasion of Ukraine.

“We are joining with our European allies to find and seize your yachts, your luxury apartments, your private jets,” President Joe Biden said during his State of the Union speech Tuesday night, addressing the oligarchs. “We are coming for your ill-begotten gains.”

But actually seizing the behemoth boats could prove challenging. Russian billionaires have had decades to shield their money and assets in the West from governments that might try to tax or seize them.

Several media outlets reported Wednesday that German authorities had impounded Dilbar. But a spokeswoman for Hamburg state’s economy ministry told The Associated Press no such action had yet been taken because it had been unable to establish ownership of the yacht, which is named for Usmanov’s mother.

Dilbar is flagged in the Cayman Islands and registered to a holding company in Malta, two secretive banking havens where the global ultra-rich often park their wealth.

Still, in the industry that caters to the exclusive club of billionaires and centimillionaires that can afford to buy, crew and maintain superyachts, it is often an open secret who owns what.

Working with the U.K.-based yacht valuation firm VesselsValue, the AP compiled a list of 56 superyachts — generally defined as luxury vessels exceeding 79 feet in length — believed to be owned by a few dozen Kremlin-aligned oligarchs, seaborne assets with a combined market value estimated at more than $5.4 billion.

The AP then used two online services — VesselFinder and MarineTraffic — to plot the last known locations of the yachts as relayed by their onboard tracking beacons.

While many are still anchored at or near sun-splashed playgrounds in the Mediterranean and Caribbean, more than a dozen were underway to or had already arrived in remote ports in small nations such as the Maldives and Montenegro, potentially beyond the reach of Western sanctions. Three are moored in Dubai, where many wealthy Russians have vacation homes.

Another three had gone dark, their transponders last pinging just outside the Bosporus in Turkey — gateway to the Black Sea and the southern Russian ports of Sochi and Novorossiysk.

Graceful, a German-built Russian-flagged superyacht believed to belong to Putin, left a repair yard in Hamburg on Feb. 7, two weeks before Russia invaded Ukraine. It is now moored in the Russian Baltic port of Kaliningrad, beyond the reach of Western sanctions imposed against him this past week.

Some Russian oligarchs appear to have not gotten the memo to move their superyachts, despite weeks of public warnings of Putin’s planned invasion.

French authorities seized the superyacht Amore Vero on Thursday in the Mediterranean resort town of La Ciotat. The boat is believed to belong to Igor Sechin, a Putin ally who runs Russian oil giant Rosneft, which has been on the U.S. sanctions list since Russia annexed Crimea in 2014.

The French Finance Ministry said in a statement that customs authorities boarded the 289-foot Amore Vero and discovered its crew was preparing for an urgent departure, even though planned repair work wasn’t finished. The $120 million boat is registered to a company that lists Sechin as its primary shareholder.

On Saturday, Italian financial police in the port of San Remo seized the 132-foot superyacht Lena, which is flagged in the British Virgin Islands. Authorities said the boat belongs to Gennady Timchenko, an oligarch close to Putin and among those sanctioned by the European Union. With an estimated net worth of $16.2 billion, Timchenko is the founder of the Volga Group, which specializes in investments in energy, transport and infrastructure assets.

The 213-foot Lady M was also seized by the Italians while moored in the Riviera port town of Imperia. In a tweet announcing the seizure on Friday, a spokesman for Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi said the comparatively modest $27 million vessel was the property of sanctioned steel baron Alexei Mordashov, listed as Russia’s wealthiest man with a fortune of about $30 billion.

But Mordashov’s upsized yacht, the 464-foot Nord, was safely at anchor on Friday in the Seychelles, a tropical island chain in the Indian Ocean not under the jurisdiction of U.S. or EU sanctions. Among the world’s biggest superyachts, Nord has a market value of $500 million.

Since Friday, Italy has seized $156 million in luxury yachts and villas in some of its most picturesque destinations, including Sardinia, the Ligurian coast and Lake Como.

Most of the Russians on the annual Forbes list of billionaires have not yet been sanctioned by the United States and its allies, and their superyachts are still cruising the world’s oceans.

The evolution of oligarch yachts goes back to the tumultuous decade after the 1991 fall of the Soviet Union, as state oil and metals industries were sold off at rock-bottom prices, often to politically connected Russian businessmen and bankers who had provided loans to the new Russian state in exchange for the shares.

Russia’s nouveau riche began buying luxury yachts similar in size and expense to those owned by Silicon Valley billionaires, heads of state and royalty. It’s a key marker of status in Moscow and St. Petersburg, and size matters.

“No self-respecting Russian oligarch would be without a superyacht,” said William Browder, a U.S.-born and now London-based financier who worked in Moscow for years before becoming one of the Putin regime’s most vocal foreign critics. “It’s part of the rite of passage to being an oligarch. It’s just a prerequisite.”

As their fortunes ballooned, there was something of an arms race among the oligarchs, with the richest among them accumulating personal fleets of ever more lavish boats.

For example, Russian metals and petroleum magnate Roman Abramovich is believed to have bought or built at least seven of the world’s largest yachts, some of which he has since sold off to other oligarchs.

In 2010, Abramovich launched the Bermuda-flagged Eclipse, which at 533 feet was at the time the world’s longest superyacht. Features include a wood-burning firepit and swimming pool that transforms into a dance floor. Eclipse also boasts its own helicopter hangar and an undersea bay that reportedly holds a mini-sub.

Dennis Cauiser, a superyacht analyst with VesselsFinder, said oligarch boats often include secret security measures worthy of a Bond villain, including underwater escape hatches, bulletproof windows and armored panic rooms.

“Eclipse is equipped with all sorts of special features, including missile launchers and self-defense systems on board,” Cauiser said. “It has a secret submarine evacuation area and things like that.”

Eclipse was soon eclipsed by Azzam, purportedly owned by the emir of Abu Dhabi, which claimed the title of longest yacht when it was launched in 2013. Three years after that, Usmanov launched Dilbar, which replaced another slightly smaller yacht by the same name. The new Dilbar is the world’s largest yacht by volume.

Abramovich, whose fortune is estimated at $12.4 billion, fired back last year by launching Solaris. While not as long as Eclipse or as big as Dilbar, the $600 million Bermuda-flagged boat is possibly even more luxurious. Eight stories tall, Solaris features a sleek palisade of broad teak-covered decks suitable for hosting a horde of well-heeled partygoers.

But no boat is top dog for long. At least 20 superyachts are reported to be under construction in various Northern European shipyards, including a $500 million superyacht being built for the American billionaire Jeff Bezos.

“It’s about ego,” Cauiser said. “They all want to have the best, the longest, the most valuable, the newest, the most luxurious.”

But, he added, the escalating U.S. and EU sanctions on Putin-aligned oligarchs and Russian banks have sent a chill through the industry, with boatbuilders and staff worried they won’t be paid. It can cost upwards of $50 million a year to crew, fuel and maintain a superyacht.

The crash of the ruble and the tanking of Moscow stock market have depleted the fortunes of Russia’s elite, with several people dropping off the list of Forbes billionaires last week. Cauiser said he expects some oligarch superyachts will soon quietly be listed by brokers at fire-sale prices.

The 237-foot Stella Maris, which was seen by an AP journalist docked this past week in Nice, France, was believed to be owned by Rashid Sardarov, a Russian billionaire oil and gas magnate. After publication of an earlier version of this story, AP was contacted Sunday by yacht broker Joan Plana Palao, who said his company represents a U.S. citizen from California who purchased the Stella Maris last month. He declined to disclose the name of the buyer or the person from whom the boat had been purchased.

On Thursday, the U.S. Treasury Department issued a new round of sanctions that included a press release touting Usmanov’s close ties to Putin and photos of Dilbar and the oligarch’s private jet, a custom-built 209-foot Airbus A340-300 passenger liner. Treasury said Usmanov’s aircraft is believed to have cost up to $500 million and is named Bourkhan, after his father.

Usmanov, whose fortune has recently shrunk to about $17 billion, criticized the sanctions.

“I believe that such a decision is unfair and the reasons employed to justify the sanctions are a set of false and defamatory allegations damaging my honor, dignity and business reputation,” he said in a statement issued through the website of the International Fencing Federation, of which he has served as president since 2008.

Abramovich has not yet been sanctioned. Members of the British Parliament have criticized Prime Minister Boris Johnson for not going after Abramovich’s U.K.-based assets, which include the professional soccer club Chelsea. Under mounting pressure, the oligarch announced this past week he would sell the $2.5 billion team and give the net proceeds “for the benefit of all victims of the war in Ukraine.”

Meanwhile, location transponders showed Solaris moored in Barcelona, Spain, on Saturday. Eclipse set sail from St. Maarten late Thursday and is underway in the Caribbean Sea, destination undisclosed.

The Mediterranean yachting season has kicked off for the summer — and it didn't take long for another yacht to fall victim to a killer whale encounter .

A group of orcas sank a 50-foot sailing yacht in Moroccan waters on Sunday in the latest of several similar incidents involving the highly social species that have occurred over the past four years.

An unknown number of orcas were involved in the incident, which took place in the Strait of Gibraltar, Spain's maritime rescue service said Monday, according to Reuters .

Related stories

The incident is the most recent in a spate of bizarre orca encounters with boats that have been on the rise in recent years, primarily in Mediterranean waters south of Spain, where many yachts cruise during the summer months.

Two passengers were on board the Alboran Cognac around 9 a.m. local time on Sunday when they felt sudden hits to the hull and rudder, Reuters reported, citing the maritime service. Water soon started to pour into the yacht.

A nearby oil tanker came to the people's rescue, saving them from the waterlogged ship and delivering them to land.

But the yacht wasn't as lucky. The Alboran Cognac stayed adrift for a time until it ultimately sank.

Since 2020, hundreds of similar encounters between boats and orcas have been documented off the southern coasts of Spain and Portugal, often near the Strait of Gibraltar. And it's not just yachts. The orcas have also rammed into sailboats, and some mariners have even created heavy-metal playlists in hopes of deterring the killer whales — though experts say it'll do little to help .

Researchers say the clashes typically follow a similar pattern, with a killer whale repeatedly ramming into the rudder of a ship, often until it breaks and the boat is stranded. Most of the time, the ships are able to escape with minimal damage, but several boats have sunk .

While the so-called orca "attacks" may appear violent, marine biologists have said it's unlikely the encounters are actually malicious. Several experts told Business Insider last year that the orcas are probably just playing .

Andrew Trites, director of the Marine Mammal Research Unit at the University of British Columbia in Canada, said ramming into the boats may simply be a "playful activity that's gotten way out of hand."

Researchers have also said the killer whales may be learning the behavior from each other through simple imitation.

Stiles Points: OKC Thunder Has to Beat the Odds Again to Keep Season Alive

Rylan stiles | 16 hours ago.

May 15, 2024; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA; Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (2)

  • Oklahoma City Thunder
  • Dallas Mavericks

Once again, the Oklahoma City Thunder will have to beat the odds if they hope to keep their 2023-24 campaign alive. Their back firmly against the wall, a game away from elimination, this upstart Thunder team will attempt to force a Game 7 back in Oklahoma City on Saturday against the Dallas Mavericks.

This will be a tough test. Kyrie Irving is a perfect 13-0 in close out games as he and his co-star Luka Doncic are no stranger to wrapping up series with their prolific shot making. Dallas will attempt to ride the moment of a rowdy crowd in the American Airline Center to wrap this series up in six games.

After dropping a pivotal Game 5, the Oklahoma City Thunder have certainly put themselves behind the eight bal, a place they’re no stranger to being.

The Thunder entered the year as the second youngest team in the NBA, after a surprise 2022-23 season, Oklahoma City was still projected to win just 44.5 games according to Vegas in the rough and tumble Western Conference.

Teams this young as not supposed to be this good, rattling off 57 wins and earning the No. 1 seed, the youngest squad to ever accomplish that feat. Along the way, they’ve won games against every top team in the association in an attempt to prove they belong en route to winning their first playoff series since 2016.

As Oklahoma City enjoys their most success since Kevin Durant was in a Thunder uniform, they’ll have to shatter through expectations yet again on Saturday to keep their series alive with many counting Oklahoma City out.

OKC has labored to score while looking lackluster at times effort-wise and clanking wide-open triples. It is yet to be seen if the Thunder can turn the tide this series or if their inexperience and the stellar Mavericks defense will continue to doom them.

Cohen on Cross: 5 Takeaways From Trump’s Criminal Trial

The key prosecution witness faced defense lawyers as the trial nears what may be an unexpectedly early conclusion.

  • Share full article

Michael D. Cohen sitting in the back seat of a black vehicle on a Manhattan street.

By Jesse McKinley and Kate Christobek

  • Published May 14, 2024 Updated May 16, 2024

Follow our live coverage of Trump’s hush-money trial in Manhattan.

Michael Cohen faced a fierce cross-examination on Tuesday afternoon in the criminal trial of Donald Trump, as the defense tried to tear down the prosecution’s key witness.

Mr. Cohen was repeatedly attacked by Mr. Trump’s attorney, Todd Blanche, who suggested he was being evasive on the stand, had selective amnesia and was a jilted former employee profiting off his hatred of the former president.

Mr. Cohen, once Mr. Trump’s personal lawyer, has testified that Mr. Trump directed him to pay $130,000 in hush money to Stormy Daniels, a porn star, to suppress her account of a sexual rendezvous with him in a Lake Tahoe hotel in 2006.

Mr. Trump faces 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to hide the reimbursement of Mr. Cohen. Mr. Trump, 77, has denied the charges and says he did not have sex with Ms. Daniels. If convicted, he could face prison or probation.

Here are five takeaways from Mr. Trump’s 17th day on trial:

We could be near the end, but Trump is a wild card.

Prosecutors indicated Tuesday that Mr. Cohen would be their last witness, and the defense said that it hoped to be done with cross-examination Thursday, the week’s only remaining day of court.

After that, the defense can present its case, though it is not clear how long that might take. On Tuesday, Mr. Trump’s lawyers told the judge, Juan M. Merchan, that they could begin Monday, and that the defendant might testify.

“No determination yet?” Justice Merchan asked.

“No,” Mr. Blanche said.

Who Are Key Players in the Trump Manhattan Criminal Trial?

The first criminal trial of former President Donald J. Trump is underway. Take a closer look at central figures related to the case.

No knockout blow in a crucial cross-examination.

From his first question, it was clear that Mr. Blanche was ready for a fight: he immediately suggested that the volatile Mr. Cohen had referred to him online with a vulgarity. The judge stopped that line of questioning, but Mr. Blanche soon was peppering the witness with questions about his penchant for talking to reporters, his defiance of prosecutors’ requests to stop speaking and his feelings about Mr. Trump.

Mr. Blanche grilled Mr. Cohen about social media posts. Those included a suggestion that Mr. Trump belonged in a cage like an “animal” and a reference to him as a “Cheeto-dusted cartoon villain.”

Mr. Cohen responded calmly that those sounded like things he would have said, leaving the defense still hunting for a moment that would badly damage his credibility.

Cohen discussed emotions. He didn’t show them.

The anticipation that Mr. Cohen would melt down seemed high. Late last year, when he testified at Mr. Trump's civil fraud trial, he made legal objections from the witness stand, refused to answer questions and cited court cases in his defense.

But in his first two days of testimony, Mr. Cohen has largely kept his composure. He has given short, basic answers and rarely strayed off topic.

While some of Mr. Cohen’s insults of Mr. Trump were mentioned, he also complimented the president, describing his past admiration for his former boss.

All that, prosecutors probably hope, could reaffirm the idea that Mr. Cohen is simply acting out of virtue rather than a desire for revenge.

The case hangs on documents.

A month in, the jury has heard about porn stars, payoffs and campaign panics. But whenever jurors get the case, perhaps before Memorial Day weekend, they will also have a raft of documents to evaluate.

These include a series of checks sent to Mr. Cohen, who reaffirmed repeatedly on Tuesday that the description of the checks as payments for a legal retainer were false.

The jury is also likely to pore over transcripts of Mr. Cohen’s testimony about a meeting in the Oval Office in February 2017 where he says that Mr. Trump confirmed the plan to reimburse him.

The House speaker is carrying out Trump’s attacks.

It was a striking sight: the speaker of the House, Mike Johnson of Louisiana, second in line for the presidency, standing in front of a courthouse in Manhattan, calling a criminal prosecution a “sham.”

Mr. Johnson blasted Mr. Cohen, calling him a man “on a mission for personal revenge,” and saying that “no one should believe a word he says in there.”

The Republican Party has traditionally made support for law enforcement a pillar, but such invective has become the norm in Mr. Trump’s trial as the presumptive presidential nominee’s allies come to court to support him. (On Tuesday, those included North Dakota’s governor, Doug Burgum, and the former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy.)

Their defense of Mr. Trump follows a gag order that bars him from attacking jurors and witnesses like Mr. Cohen. Mr. Trump has already been cited for 10 violations so far and threatened with jail if he continues.

Mr. Trump said in a morning statement to reporters, “I do have a lot of surrogates, and they are speaking very beautifully.”

Who shows up next is anybody’s guess when court meets on Thursday and the cross-examination of Mr. Cohen continues.
