The L2Fish Paddle Board

Today we’re going to be doing a review of the popular L2Fish catamaran paddle board.

To begin, this is a really unique board.

catamaran fishing paddle board

I’ve been using it for the past two years so I’ve got a really good feel for everything this board can do (plus a few small downsides).

For the record, we are not sponsored or affiliated with Livewater Sports (the maker of the L2Fish board), so I’m gonna talk about both the pros and the cons (because we are totally unbiased here at Salt Strong and we always try our best to give fair and balanced reviews).

Finally, if you already own one of these boards (or have used one in the past,) I’d love to hear your experience and thoughts in the comment section down below.

Let’s dig in.

Pros Of The L2Fish

catamaran fishing paddle board

  • This paddle board is SUPER stable (to the point you can catch tarpon with two grown adults on the board like our friends Joey Antonelli and Logan Athey did). I’ve even put my skiff platform on the board to get a couple more feet of elevation and it was still incredibly stable.
  • It’s 34-inches wide and almost impossible to flip over with the catamaran style hull
  • No drag in the middle of the board
  • Not much hull slap (compared to other boards that don’t have a catamaran hull) – very important for sight fishing
  • The SUP has tracks up and down each side of the board to easily add in any accessories (YakAttack, etc)
  • Comes in numerous colors and even comes in a 14ft version as well called the Expedition (this L2Fish in the review is a 12-footer)
  • It weighs 50 pounds so it’s light enough to load, launch, and carry by myself (much lighter than my kayak)
  • Can hold 500 pounds of weight (so even with me, my gear, a full cooler, and a dog, this paddleboard still runs smooth)
  • Easy to use for any size person (from kids to super heavy or super tall anglers)
  • It looks awesome and turns heads (I’ve found it’s a great conversation starter)

Cons Of The L2Fish

catamaran fishing paddleboard l2fish

  • The main con is the cost, but then again, you usually get what you pay for… Note: the 12ft version is $2,300 and the 14ft version of this board (The Expedition) is $2600
  • Storage (since it’s a little thicker than most boards – because of the amazing catamaran stability – it takes a little more room to store it)
  • The 14ft version is a little tougher to transport by yourself

In conclusion, if you don’t like this board, then you probably hate puppies also…

The only real downside is the cost and weight (if you compared it to a super light SUP).

But if you are serious about fishing, if you want a board that can hold all of your gear (plus your cooler and dog), this is the best board we’ve seen on the market.

In fact, we personally own two of them now (Joe just bought a new one for his 40th birthday – in black – it looks awesome).

So what are your thoughts on the L2Fish board?

I have owned an L2 since December of 2019. I have fished on it probably well over 500 times. I really enjoy fishing off of it. It is super quiet, paddles easily in calm water and weighs less than many fishing kayaks. The best feature is the stability of the board compared to others.

I primarily fish it in the Indian River Lagoon. Sometimes I take it to the Mosquito Lagoon. I have a YouTube channel where you can see me using my L2 fishing. I also have several videos on how I set up the board, transport the board, and some equipment you might consider using on your board. see below links.

As mentioned, the board is expensive. However it’s comparable to the Bote board yet more stable. Paddleboards are not good for winds over 12 mph. Especially for the inexperienced paddleboard fisherman. Kayaks are better for windier conditions. You can paddle from your knees if you can’t make much forward progress. Using the paddle as a pushpole can also help in the wind.

Great review, I’m just wondering if there’s a way to attach some sort of stability bar on 1 side or the other. I have really balance since I’m a stage 4 brain cancer survivor. I had to sell my deep V sea nymph because I didn’t feel safe on lake Michigan. Trying to remember if I put the plug in & everything else. Not worrying if I’m going sink is a relief. Obviously, lol Smaller lakes for my future.

Luke Simonds

They most likely do have an option for that since these boards have the same slots along the side that kayaks have… so stability bars for kayaks should work in these boards too.

Cory

Is there electric fins for this? That would make mine EPIC!

Paul Maguire

Great review. I love the idea of simplicity. I am new to saltwater fishing and fairly new to kayak fishing. I am 74 years old and have not felt secure enough to stand and sight fish. I think this might be one I could use. I always take way too much stuff on my kayak and with all the extra weight I am worn out by the end of the day just loading and unloading.

Thanks Paul! The simplicity route is my favorite whenever paddle fishing.

i loved this board after watching it in a Hawaiian review catching trevally. But for the cost factor decided on the pedal drive Kaku Zula at 12’7″ for $2000. I am thinking of circling back to purchase L2 12′

So some time has passed, did you ever get the l2 or l4? I’m between buying the zulu and L2 right now as well and would love to hear your insights

Kelly L MacDonald

I totally love my L2fish! and I personally don’t know why anyone would want a Kayak to fish in! I made a 14′ tortured plywood Kayak and then a 17′ cedar strip canoe for fishing. When my son was 10 we were fishing together (we were very competitive). He would stand in the bow and sight fish. He would beat me and it drove me crazy. (Yes I would let him win as that is what a good Mom should do, LOL) but when I saw the L2fish on TV for the first time I knew I had to have one. I made a smaller version (foam and fiberglass) for my son (10′) and I bought a 12′ for me.

I love being able to stand and silently sneak up on fish! I have made tons of gear for it (front deck with cam lock for easy anchor control, rear deck with mounted Powerpole Micro, gear storage box with bump board measuring top/sight platform, 4 rod holders and plier storage, elevated rod/paddle holder, and some light and inexpensive strap on wheels to make moving it while fully loaded a breeze.

My next project is to make a mount to incorporate a new trolling motor. I love being able to walk around I seldom sit. I can put a ton of gear on it. My son even put a large lawn chair on it and slept in the middle of a creek anchored overnight.

Cbshorre

I have had a L2 and currently have a L4. I made a power pole manual bracket which is a game changer . The full length foam deck and tracks let it be modified without drilling. One question is how to move it down stairs with maybe 1 large wheeleez tire? Like a wheel barrel with 1 wheel but it needs to be large. Considering getting a L2 because it’s lighter and go absolutely with the minimum gear. L4 is great but not a fan of gas motors on sups.

I have trouble when I fall off a SUP lifting my body to climb back on. If I attach a small stirrup rope ladder about 3 feet tall to the side of this I could drop the ladder into the water to foot lift myself on a rung to help climb aboard? At 180lbs do you think it would flip over if I just needed a slight boost to lift my body higher onto the board then swing the legs onto the board with the boost of the the rope ladder?

I think that would work great. You could tie your “ladder” off on the carrying rope. I just saw one of those and am going to make one as a safety measure for my boat. I could use it for tying off to a dock too. I use my boat to fish all the time and I have tried to flip it. Haven’t done it yet.

A standard technique for re-entering a sea kayak is using an inflatable paddle-float. Lots of YouTube videos. But you can also rig the paddle + paddle-float combo with a webbing sling that makes it really easy.

Alex Risner

I was born with CP I’m loose muscle tone which means my muscle isn’t as strong as they should be (also have a really really bad knee n hips) I tried the kayak thing but that really bother my legs( getting down that low n getting up) n I really couldn’t load/unload it. If I get a high enough cooler to sit on do u think I would have a problem?

The 18 Best Fishing Paddleboards | Awesome SUPs for Angling

  • by Chris Klenner
  • September 3, 2020 September 21, 2021

Grouper on the SUP

Fishing SUPs (aka fishing paddleboards) have been steadily growing in popularity over the last decade. SUP fishing readily embraces a light gear philosophy – making it one of the best grab and go options out there. A cooler, rod, and some light tackle are all you really need, and can fit, for a great day paddling on the water.

Most sups are fishable; but fishing paddleboards, or rather SUPS built specifically for fishing, have a few key features that add some critical functionality. Our list below, a subset derived from our master sup database, shows the current market for fishing paddleboards. A deep dive on the most expensive and most affordable boards will give you a better idea of what your dollar buys. And finally we’ve put together a few tips to consider to help you find your best next board.

Most Expensive Fishing Paddleboard

Live 2 fish l4 expedition.

catamaran fishing paddle board

The Live Watersports family features two high-end fishing paddleboards: the L2 and L4. Both feature catamaran style fiberglass hulls with premium gel coating that provides a glossy and durable finish. The L4 Expedition is the larger model and boasts some impressive specs. 14′ long with 8 square feet of deck space and a 700 lb capacity puts the L4 Expedition at the top of the pack for not just fishing paddleboards, but almost all paddleboards. At 34″ wide the L4 can still be easily paddled and is surprisingly fast thanks to the low wetted surface area.

When it comes to angling the L4 doesn’t skimp out; this rig is ready to take on all sizes of fish. Ten different gear tracks adorn the perimeter to provide anchor points for gear, rod holders, and other accessories. The recessed stern shape naturally lends itself to motor placement. With the Live Watersports motor mount you can easily throw on a low thrust trolling motor for longer distance voyages. The stability on this SUP is nearly unparalleled thanks to its twin hull design. If you take a dip fighting a redfish on this board well, that’s on you.

The L4 Expedition weighs in at 65 lbs, which is hefty for a SUP, but isn’t even a tenth of its total capacity. This is an awesome option for serious fishermen looking for exercise. And it’s perfect for those who want to bring along some extra gear, or a companion. This fishing paddleboard can easily support two people without crowding them; which means you’ll have no excuse not to bring your spouse or kid. The L4 Expedition costs $2,699 and is made in the USA in Clearwater, Florida.

Most Affordable Fishing Paddleboard

Kaku kayaks kahuna.

catamaran fishing paddle board

The Kaku Krew down in Tarpon Springs Florida are known for producing some wildly innovative paddlecraft. Largely geared towards flats and inshore fishing Kaku’s built a respectable lineup of watercraft that often blurs the lines between kayak and paddleboard. The Kaku Kahuna borders hybrid territory and this design offers some great advantages over water.

The Kahuna measures in at 12′ long with a 34″ beam and is built using a rotomolded HDPE process comparable to most kayak makers. Integral skeg fins and board-length chines on the bottom offer stability and superior tracking. Up front a small hatch provides dry storage and hull access, while the stern features a power-pole insert which can also accommodate after market motor mounts. Gear track on each side and an EVA foam mat with some gnarly graphics complete the package.

All of these features add up to an extremely approachable fishing paddleboard at a great price (drops to $650 on sale fairly often). There are some downsides to consider though: this board is heavy; lugging 70lbs a couple hundred feet will have you shopping for a cart in no time. The weight capacity on this is also fairly low at just 300 lbs. Approaching that limit causes the board to sit low in the water which means wet feet. If you’re above 200 lbs you should definitely think twice.

All in all though this is an awesome board for lighter paddlers who want a stable and durable fishing paddleboard. If you ever get tired standing you can add on a Larry Chair to convert the Kahuna into a hybrid kayak/sup. Give the Kahuna some thought if you’re looking to break into paddleboard fishing for less.

Our Pick For The Best Value Fishing Paddleboard

Sea eagle fishsup 126.

Tricked out FS126

Sea Eagle has a long-standing reputation of delivering premium inflatables at approachable price; and the FS126 is no different. This inflatable fishing paddleboard measures 12’6″ long with a beam of 38″ and sports Sea Eagle’s distinctive hunter green color scheme. The 6″ thick FS126 inflates to 15 PSI thanks to a drop stitched core to provide an extremely rigid ride. Underneath 3 removable skeg fins assist in tracking; while up top a camo EVA foam deck pad provides traction for both paddling and reeling in some whoppers.

One of the hallmarks of an awesome fishing paddleboard is its versatility; and the FS126 delivers in spades. This fishing SUP can be rigged with just a pole and paddle. Or you can add a swivel seat, trolling motor, and rod holders for more adventurous outings. 14 D rings running along the port and starboard edges offer tie down points for paddle and rod leashes. And bungee up front is handy for stowing tackle boxes or a dry bag. We’re also big fans of the built in measuring stick and the paddle pocket up front.

catamaran fishing paddle board

There are a few different trim levels for the FS126, but all of them come with a backpack (for storage), pump, repair kit, paddle, and soft bow box. The base package runs at $899 and Sea Eagle regularly runs free shipping promotions. At this price the Fishing SUP 126 is an incredible deal; you won’t find a lot of comparable packages anywhere near the same level of quality. Higher trim packages add in accessories like seats and motor mounts, which you can purchase separately, but are more attractively priced with the board. If you’re itching to get into SUP angling, and on a budget, then definitely consider running the Sea Eagle.

Smooth, Silent, and Stylish: The Dragonfly

catamaran fishing paddle board

The Dragonfly 13’6″ is not your typical fishing paddleboard. This paddleboard was designed from the ground up to be smooth, quiet, and dry. The sharp entry bow breaks and flat side boards enable the 13’6″ to silently coast through the water; no board-slap to spook the fish. The raised lip around the cockpit, along with a slight rocker and backward tilt, provide splash over a clear path back to the sea. Paddling the Dragonfly 13’6″ starts dry and ends dry in all but the roughest waters.

Built using composite fabric and resin Dragonfly’s SUPs are durable but light. At just 45 lbs the 13’6″ model can support up to 420 lbs which is more than enough for sturdy passengers and big payloads. The hollow core provides plenty of buoyancy as well as convenient workspace for running wires if you decide to motorize.

catamaran fishing paddle board

These boards are prized and sought after because of their reputation as some of the best made fishing paddleboards out there. Dragonfly’s are available around the world, but if you’re on the east coast it’s worth a trip down to Vero Beach to check them out. If you’re gearing for a board your friends will be jealous of then you’d be hard pressed to find one smoother than Dragonfly.

What to Look For in A Fishing Paddleboard

First and foremost to paddleboard fishing is a stable platform for throwing a line out. Stability in paddleboards can be accomplished a few different ways; chines, catamarans, or most commonly – width. Extra wide boards offer greater surface area to balance a load and resist against shifting forces. All around and even yoga type SUPS typically offer better stability and are good choices if you’re in a pinch. Wide boards simply aren’t as fast; but that’s OK – you’re fishing.

Most SUP anglers prefer quiet boards for the simple reason that noise spooks fish. And when you’re sightcasting and a fish goes, it’s gone. Board rocker and bow shape have a profound effect on the noise level of a board. Flared up bows are great for coasting over waves and keeping balance. But they also have a tendency to accentuate the dreaded Hull-Slap. In mild to moderate winds small waves will slap against the underside of your board producing vibrations which will send your prey swimming. Boards with steep entry bows and v shaped hulls will help reduce or outright eliminate hull slap.

Room To Grow

As you develop as a paddleboard fisherman you’ll want to adapt your setup. A board that provides a flexible platform to accommodate different setups is critical for long term satisfaction. The inclusion of gear track, D-rings, bungee, and scotty mounts on a board gives you the ease to switch up your config easily. While modifying a SUP is possible it’s also a bit more delicate than with a kayak; water that seeps into your foam core isn’t getting out easily. Boards with baked in accessory points are easier to adapt and grow with.

Overview on the Best Fishing Paddleboards

We expect that Fishing SUP’s will continue to grow in popularity as more and more people begin to embrace a lighter and faster fishing philosophy. Best Fishing Paddle Board Reviews

Let’s go through the features, pros, and cons so you can get an idea of what these fishing paddle boards are like.

1. BOTE Rackham Aero – Best Stand Up Paddle Board for Fishing

bote rackham aero fishing paddle board

The BOTE Rackham Aero is a long, thick, and wide board. It has a recessed deck that lowers your center of gravity. It is remarkably stable; one of the most stable fishing paddle boards I know. You can stand, move around, fight fish–all without having to worry about falling off.

But that is not the only thing that makes it a great fishing paddle board.

The Rackham Aero has front and back bungees for gear storage. It has D-rings, paddle and sand spear sheaths as well as gear mounts for your fishing accessories. You can attach every SUP fishing accessory you can think of. The paddle sheath is such an awesome feature because you can securely store your paddle while casting to free your hands.

If you are looking to fully customize a stand up paddle board for fishing, consider the BOTE Rackham Aero. It is compatible with a wide range of fishing gear and accessories, including a fishing rack, rod holders, SUP cooler, and Bote Board’s MagnePod accessories among others.

The inflatable paddle board package includes a 10” removable center fin, paddle, hand pump, rac receivers, paddle sheath, sand spear sheath, and a repair kit.

Read our full review of the Bote Rackham Aero .

  • Unique color options: The Bote Rackham Aero is available in four color options and they all look amazing. I can’t pick a favorite one–but if I really had to say I’d go with the Bug Slinger Redfish :-).
  • Feature-rich deck: I love Bote fishing SUP boards because of their feature-rich decks. The Rackham Aero has a paddle sheath, multiple grab handles, D-rings, bungee storage, sand spear sheath, Rac receivers, and a MagnePod. You can attach so much gear and create your ideal SUP fishing setup.
  • Quality construction: Made with AeroBote technology, the Rackham Aero is super tough and stiff. It handles impact well and you can paddle confidently, regardless of the conditions.
  • Great stability: This inflatable board is wide and has a recessed deck. It is unbelievably stable and perfectly suited for fishing.
  • Heavy: As is the case with most fishing inflatable boards, the Rackham Aero is not light. It weighs 45 pounds.
  • No leash: You get everything you need for paddle boarding, except a leash. For the price, I think a leash would be nice.

2. Bote Rover Aero – Best Fishing Paddle Board With Motor

catamaran fishing paddle board

For the serious angler, the Bote Rover Aero would be just perfect.

This microskiff is long, wide, and thick–measuring 12’6 x 40.5” x 11”–and it has a recessed deck. It’s certainly not your average fishing paddle board. It’s a winner when it comes to stability and you can comfortably move around, even with lots of gear on board.

bote-rover-infl-micro-skiffs

The Rover Aero is built using Aero technology, just like the Rackham, and you can tell that it’s a tough paddle board. It feels super rigid when inflated, you can hardly believe it’s an inflatable and it has a weight capacity of 500 pounds. This is enough for you all your fishing gear.

If you’re looking to create a setup that will have every other angler throwing jealous glances your way, this is the SUP for you. This Bote board is compatible with the Power Rac, a small command center for your microskiff and it powers your SUP fishing gadgets like fish finders.

On top of that, the Rover Aero has D-rings, a paddle sheath, bungee storage, D-rings, and gear mounts for even more accessories. You can also add a trolling motor and enjoy getting to your fishing spot faster without wearing your arms out.

The Bote Rover Rover Aero package includes a paddle, SUP bag, paddle sheath, sand spear sheath, Motorac and Motorac receivers, repair kit, Rac receivers, and a hand pump.

Read our full review of the Bote Rover Aero microskiff

  • Outstanding stability: The Bote Rover Aero is more stable than you can imagine for an inflatable paddle board, thanks to the wide, recessed deck. You can move around without fear of falling off.
  • Extremely durable: It is built for hardcore anglers and it can handle any abuse you throw its way. It’s 11 inches thick and extremely rigid when inflated, with a weight capacity of 500 pounds–ideal for anglers who like to bring a lot of gear.
  • Awesome color options: Like the Rackham Aero, the Rover Aero is also available in multiple colors and they are all beautiful and perfect for fishermen.

3. Glide Angler – Best Cheap Fishing Paddle Board

glide angler fishing paddle board 2021

The Glide Angler , as you can tell from its name, is designed specifically for fishing. It promises to solve all your fishing problems. But does it deliver?

This Glide fishing paddle board is built using ultra reinforced dropstitch and fusion technology. It features reinforced rails and you can easily mistake it for a solid paddle board when fully inflated.

glide angler

It has a weight capacity of 400 pounds–which is enough for you and your gear. With a length of 11 foot and a width of 36 inches the Glide Angler is a stable platform for paddle board fishing .

Often, the wider a board is, the more resistance it has through the water and the slower it is to paddle. The pointed nose of the Angler gives it less resistance than I expected and easy enough to paddle.

The SUP has front and rear bungee storage, D-rings, and four deck mounts. You won’t have to leave any essential items behind. The Angler is also compatible with the Bote Tackle Rack for even more mount options.

The Angler fishing SUP has 2 stake pole mounts, one on each side of the board. So don’t forget to pick up the optional 7 foot Glide Anchor pole , that makes anchoring your board in shallow water much easier.

The Glide Angler inflatable package includes an adjustable paddle, roller backpack, leash, repair kit, high capacity pump, kayak seat, 2 rod holders, and a carry strap. This is a fantastic deal!

  • Affordable: Good fishing boards can be quite expensive, including inflatable ones. I love that the Glide Angler doesn’t cost much but you still get a quality and stable platform for fishing.
  • All-inclusive package: You may have noticed that many fishing boards don’t include all the basic SUP essentials as with other inflatable SUPs. The Glide comes with everything you need for paddle boarding, as well as a fishing seat and a carry strap.
  • Quality construction: It may be a budget option but it features military-grade construction and reinforced rails. It’s suitable for anglers of all sizes as it is rigid enough to hold up to 500 pounds.
  • Single-fin system: The Glide Angler only has a large center fin, no side fins. You can’t play around with different setups.

catamaran fishing paddle board

The Sea Eagle inflatable paddle board was made with one thing in mind: fishing. It comes with almost every feature you could ever ask for.

The stand up paddle board is large, measuring 12’6 long and 40 inches wide. It is built using 1100 Decitex reinforced dropstitch. This makes it one of the toughest and most stable paddle boards you can find.

Whether you are at the lake, ocean, or wherever you like to fish, you will appreciate the incredible stability of this fish paddle board. With its size and swallowtail feature, falling off is extremely hard 😉

sea eagle fishsup ultimate package 300

The deck pad on the Sea Eagle inflatable paddle board is camo-patterned. It prevents you from slipping, especially when the board is wet. It also offers extra protection against damage.

Trying to hold on to your paddle while fishing at the same time can be difficult. That is why the Sea Eagle FishSUP comes with a conveniently located paddle pocket. Quickly put away your paddle and enjoy a stress-free fishing experience.

The board also has sufficient D-rings and a removable motor mount.

One of the many things every fisherman will appreciate about the Sea Eagle FishSUP is its built-in fish ruler. No more stressing about lost rulers.

Another awesome thing about the Sea Eagle inflatable SUP is that it offers seven amazing packages depending on your budget.

The basic package includes a SUP paddle, backpack, storage box, repair kit, and a hand pump. It’s the most affordable package and it would be great for anglers who are starting out or those on a tight budget. For more money, you can get a better package with more accessories.

The packages are a nice way to save money by buying everything you need as one package at a discounted price. Check out our in-depth review of the Sea Eagle FishSUP to see what each package comes with.

  • Seven available packages: I love that you can choose the fishing SUP package that suits you depending on your budget and the kind of setup you want.
  • Impressive stability: It’s a key factor for paddle board fishing and the Sea Eagle FishSUP doesn’t disappoint. It is really wide with a swallow tail making it easy to move around onboard – without falling off.
  • Deck features: This inflatable fishing SUP has tons of D-rings for attaching accessories as well as bungee storage, a paddle pocket, and a built-in fish ruler.
  • High-quality: The Sea Eagle FishSUP is made using 1100D reinforced drop stitch so heavier paddlers don’t need to worry–it’s stiff enough to support up to 500 pounds.
  • Removable transom: It’s removable and allows you to attach a trolling motor, which can come in handy when going on a long fishing trip.
  • No leash in package: None of the packages come with a leash.
  • A little heavy: a 44-pound fishing board plus gear can be a pain to transport.

5. NRS Heron Fishing SUP Board

The NRS Heron inflatable SUP has been designed purposely for stand up paddleboard fishing. It is made with the Dropstitch PVC construction which makes it tough enough for fishing in lakes, ponds and rivers.

nrs heron fishing sup board

There are side channels on the board for enhanced stability as you fish. The last thing you need while casting is a tippy platform, but it won’t be a problem with the NRS inflatable SUP.

This fantastic inflatable SUP fishing board comes with two extra D-rings, three pre-installed Scotty mounts, and two bungee storage areas. It’s a nice SUP for a simple paddle board fishing setup. I love that they also included daisy-chain rigging for a cooler. If you prefer a minimalistic setup this might be the best inflatable fishing SUP for you.

I also like the fact that it is really wide at 39 inches but not as heavy as some of the other iSUPs here.

The NRS Heron fishing inflatable board comes with a high-pressure pump, pressure gauge, Leafield valve adapter, carry bag, two fins, and a repair kit.

  • Simplicity: The NRS Heron doesn’t have a feature-packed deck, just the basic features. For anglers who like to have a light fishing setup, it’s perfect. It’s also easy to handle.
  • Lightweight: It weighs 30 pounds, which is light given its size and you won’t struggle to carry it around.
  • Heavy-duty construction: This paddle board may be lightweight but it can take a lot of abuse, thanks to the military-grade dropstitch construction. It is covered by a three-year warranty too.
  • Stability: You’ll be safe moving around and fishing from this 39-inch paddle board with side chambers. It is not tippy and you’ll have no problem maintaining balance.
  • No paddle or leash in the package: For the price, it would have been nice to get a paddle and leash–or at least just a paddle.

6. Aqua Marina Drift Fishing Paddle Board

aqua marina drift fishing sup

Aqua Marina is a well-known brand and the quality of their products is something worth writing home about. Their Aqua Marina Drift Fishing iSUP has been made specifically for stand up paddleboard fishing. It has a double-side air chamber design to ensure maximum stability during your fishing adventures.

This is another great option for anglers who prefer a simple setup. It comes with two rod holders to help you keep your fishing rods secure and out of the way while paddling. The SUP also has a bungee storage area at the front and attachment points for an ice box. Other than that, there aren’t many other features. It’s nice if you only like to bring the essentials on your fishing trip.

The Aqua Marina inflatable is a tough board, made using innovative drop stitch technology. It can easily handle almost anything without getting punctured. The entire deck is covered in a traction pad for your comfort and stability. It prevents you from slipping and falling on the wet deck.

The Marina inflatable fishing SUP comes with a paddle, leash, pump, SUP bag, and rod holders. I actually love the package. The paddle may be made from aluminum but the package is affordable.

  • Stable board: The 38-inch width and side air chambers do a great job of promoting stability. You can even walk around on the deck without losing balance.
  • All-inclusive package: The Aquaglide Marina is one of the most affordable fishing SUPs here but you’ll still get everything needed to hit the water. You’ll receive two rod holders too!

7. Fish Stalker Fishing Paddle Board

catamaran fishing paddle board

The Fish Stalker SUP for fishing is designed in such a way that you’ll have the freedom to rig it how you want.

It has a three-chamber design which ensures maximum stability, regardless of how much gear you have on the deck. It’s also rugged and virtually indestructible–you can explore as much as you want wherever you want.

As of 2020, this inflatable SUP fishing comes with a trolling motor mount. The best thing about adding a trolling motor to your rig is that there’s almost no limit to how far you can go. You don’t have to only stick to the fishing spots that are close to home.

There are tons of attachment points on the deck to ensure that you can bring everything you want.

The Fish Stalker paddle board comes with a high-volume pump and a backpack.

  • Unbeaten stability: The paddle board is 34 inches wide and has a three-chamber design. You won’t believe how stable it is. You can fish peacefully without taking an unplanned swim.
  • Customizable design: There are so many ways you can customize the Fish Stalker based on your fishing style.
  • Glides fast: Speed is not usually something that you expect from most fishing paddle boards but this one performs well. It’s no racing board but, given its width, it’s fast and you can get to your fishing spot in a shorter time.
  • Quality construction: It wouldn’t be a great fishing board if it was cheaply made. Thankfully, it features military-strength PVC and it’s not easily damaged. It can also support up to 400 pounds–that’s enough for you and your gear.
  • No paddle or leash: The Fish Stalker package doesn’t include a leash or a paddle

8. Live Watersports L2Fish

catamaran fishing paddle board

If you prefer a solid paddle board, check out the Watersports L2Fish .

The paddle board is 12’6 long and 34 inches wide. Usually, hard boards don’t have a high weight capacity. The L2Fish, however, can accommodate up to 500 pounds, thanks to its hollow core and catamaran design.

Its stability is impressive even when the conditions are a little rough–which is music to an angler’s ears. Add to this the fact that there are gear tracks all over the deck. You can bring as much gear as you want and you won’t have to worry about tipping the fishing SUP board.

The performance of the L2Fish is another awesome factor that would make any fisherman happy. It smoothly knifes through the water with speed, making for a thrilling paddle boarding experience.

There are no accessories included in the package.

  • Performance: Most people choose solid boards over inflatables because of performance. If that’s you, the L2Fish won’t disappoint. It is fast and glides so well.
  • Stability: The design of this paddle board allows it to be super stable, even with a lot of gear or when the conditions get a little rough. You’ll love it if you like to fish in different conditions–calm or challenging.
  • Weight capacity: The L2Fish can support up to 500 pounds which is a lot for a solid board. It’s great for anglers who like to bring a lot of gear.
  • Gear tracks: With the integrated gear tracks you can neatly attach all your fishing accessories, keeping them secure and out of your way.
  • It’s heavy: The L2Fish weighs 54 pounds and it won’t be easy to carry around, especially because it’s not inflatable.
  • No paddle: It doesn’t come with a paddle.

9. Flycraft Mountain Inflatable Fishing Sup

catamaran fishing paddle board

The Flycraft Mountain fishing board is much smaller than the others here, measuring 10’2 x 33.5”. It’s also much lighter at 25 pounds. Despite the smaller platform, this inflatable fishing board is still very stable and ideal for fishing. I’d recommend it to anglers who want a SUP they can easily carry around.

The SUP has gear mounts and D-rings on the deck so you can attach all the gear you need for your fishing adventure.

I love the full-length deck pad because it gives you a large soft and grippy surface for your feet. It’s also a great yoga mat if you decide to try SUP fitness sometime when you aren’t fishing.

This fishing paddle board is available in two packages. The basic package comes with a travel bag, a manual pump, and a repair kit.

The Profish package comes with the accessories in the basic package plus a fishing rack, gravity fin, and an anchor system.

  • Smaller but stable: It may not be as big as the other fishing paddle boards here but the Flycraft Mountain is stable and offers a nice fishing platform. You won’t find it tippy or wobbly, even with gear.
  • Lightweight: Fishing SUPs can be heavy and a pain to carry. I love that this one only weighs 25 pounds and is much easier to transport.
  • Two packages available: You can get the basic package or the Profish package depending on your budget. The Profish package comes with some fancy accessories for fishing so you don’t have to buy them separately.

Buying Guide: How to Choose a Paddle Board for Fishing

Having the above great options is nice. But how do you decide which fishing paddle board is perfect for you?

Here is a comprehensive guide.

Why Use a Fishing Paddle Board?

You may wonder why an angler would want to use a fishing paddle board instead of a fishing kayak or boat.

YOU MAY ALSO LIKE: Paddle Board vs Kayak Fishing – the Pros and Cons Discussed.

Stand up fishing paddle boards are not bulky . Unlike fishing kayaks and boats, fishing SUPs are lighter and smaller. An inflatable SUP, especially, doesn’t need a huge storage area. Once deflated and in a backpack, it can fit anywhere.

SUPs are cheaper . You cannot compare the price of a paddle board with that of a boat or even a proper fishing kayak. You can get a high-quality fishing paddleboard starting from $1000 only.

Your chances of catching fish are higher . It is easier to sneak up on fish with a SUP. Stand up paddle boards are not noisy. They glide quietly above the water, barely creating waves.

Additionally, standing on a paddle board gives you a better view of your surroundings. There is no obstruction and you can move around or rotate freely.

Lastly, SUP a full-body workout . Stand up paddle boarding engages every muscle in your body. It is a fun way to work out, clear your mind, and catch some fish at the same time.

Inflatable Vs Hard Stand Up Paddle Boards for Fishing

Both rigid and inflatable paddle boards are good for fishing. But each type has its advantages and disadvantages.

Inflatable SUPs are best suited for people with limited storage space. If you live in a small apartment, a fishing iSUP may be the better option for you.

Inflatable paddle boards are easier to transport too. You won’t need a roof rack and tie-down straps. They are also lighter.

Generally, solid fishing paddle boards glide better than inflatable ones. You should consider a solid paddleboard if you want amazing performance and you have enough storage space.

What to Look for in a Fishing Paddle Board

1. stability: is the paddle board stable enough for fishing.

This is a key factor when it comes to fishing paddle boards. You don’t want to end up in the water when trying to cast.

Wider, longer, and thicker SUPs are more stable. This explains the sizes of the stand up paddle boards discussed above. You may also have noticed that they are heavier, something that adds to stability.

So you want to avoid really narrow SUPs.

2. Attachment Points: Are There D-Rings and Gear Mounts on the Deck?

D-rings and action mounts provide a way for you to secure and organize your gear. There are few things more painful than losing expensive fishing gear.

This also includes your paddle so you will need a SUP with a paddle holder.

3. Weight Capacity: Can the Paddle Board Support You and All Your Fishing Gear?

Every paddle board is designed to hold a certain amount of weight. If you overload it, the performance will be affected and it will be hard to control the SUP.

Before you buy a fishing paddle board, check the weight limit. Make sure it can you, your gear, and maybe your kid or dog if you want to bring them.

4. Deck Pad: Is It Large and Grippy Enough?

A SUP deck pad serves two purposes: it offers comfort and traction.

Paddle board fishing involves standing for hours. A soft EVA foam deck pad gives you a comfortable platform to stand on.

Sliding on your wet paddle board is easier than you think. That is why you need a traction pad.

Some fishing paddle boards may come with a full-length deck pad. Others have a pad that covers only a part of the deck. This is a matter of personal preference.

How To Get Started With SUP Fishing

Outdoor activities are meant to be thrilling and challenging; to help you get a breath of fresh air far away from everyday life while keeping you fit. Fishing fits perfectly into this category. Originally, people fished for food. Today, it is done as a hobby and a form of mental and physical exercise. For this reason, people are always coming up with new ways to make it more exciting and productive. One of these ways is SUP fishing.

Paddleboard fishing has been around for quite some time now. Also known as “Man on Fish” and “Extreme Fishing,” this practice is rapidly gaining popularity and more fishing enthusiasts are turning to it. Paddleboards are cheaper compared to boats and they can get you to where boats cannot. More importantly, SUP fishing adds a little more challenge and lets you enjoy the numerous health benefits of SUPing.

Essential SUP Fishing Accessories: Advice from a Pro Paddler

About to embark on a SUP fishing journey? Excellent! As a seasoned SUP angler myself, I can assure you that the fusion of serene waters and the excitement of the catch is unparalleled. But remember, the right gear is key to a successful trip. Here’s your pro-approved SUP fishing gear checklist:

  • Rod Holders : Trust me, balancing a fishing rod and a paddle is a circus act you don’t want to perform. Rod holders are your best bet. They’ll grip your rod(s) tightly while you paddle or take a breather. Some SUPs come with holders, but you can add your own – single or multiple, fixed or adjustable, choose what works for you.
  • Paddle Leash : Here’s a scene from my first SUP fishing trip – I was pulling in a huge catch and, whoops, my paddle was floating away. Don’t be like me; get a paddle leash. It tethers your paddle to your SUP, even when you’re busy with your catch. Bonus: it can secure other gear too.
  • Tackle Bag : A pro tip – keep your fishing gear easily accessible. Hooks, lures, line, and tools all find a home in a robust, water-resistant tackle bag. Pick one that attaches to your SUP and has compartments to keep your arsenal organized.
  • Dry Bag : I learned this the hard way – water and phones don’t mix. A dry bag is your safeguard against unwelcome water damage. Secure it, attach it to your SUP, and rest easy.
  • PFD (Personal Flotation Device) : I can’t stress this enough – safety is paramount. A PFD is not optional. It’ll keep you afloat if you take a tumble, and in some places, it’s required by law. For SUP fishing, go for a fishing-specific PFD . They come with extra storage and gear attachment points – super handy!

Beyond these essentials, your personal SUP fishing kit might also include a SUP cooler for your catch, a fish finder for locating the perfect spot, a stabilizer for those extra choppy days, an anchor to stay put, and a sun hat to keep those UV rays at bay. The trick is finding a balance between necessity and portability – after all, your SUP can only carry so much. So gear up, get out there, and happy fishing!

SUP Fishing Tips

After setting up for SUP fishing, these basic tips will help you have a productive and convenient first day.

Get a License

You need a license to fish almost everywhere. Other places have very strict rules and you will even have to get a special license for certain kinds of fish. Do a little research and get all the required documents. The fines for unlicensed fishing are usually very steep and they will leave your bank account seriously dented.

Observe The Elements

The wind, current and tides will greatly influence your fishing experience because paddleboards are very light. Before you set out consider the water conditions. You will have to work against at least one element as you paddle to or from your fishing hotspot.

Only Bring What You Need

A paddleboard has limited space and it can only hold so much weight. It is okay to be excited for day one and you may want to bring everything. However, having too much gear on that small vessel will limit you in terms of speed. You will barely get to where you want to go. Also, you may end up losing a lot of gear, some of which may be expensive. Just bring what is outlined above and of course your fishing rod and tackle bag. If you find yourself with very little room to move around, then maybe you brought too much.

Tie Your Gear Down

It is a paddleboard and there is always a chance that you’ll capsize. Imagine seeing all your gear floating away, and you staring in horror wondering which one to go after first. It may seem funny now (or in a YouTube video) but it will not be when you are in the situation. Tie everything down. Unfasten them when you get to the fishing spot and tie them again when you are done.

Have A Clear Plan

Know where you are going to fish, how to get there and how to get out. The water is unpredictable and even if you are a water pro, be prepared. If this is your first time SUP fishing, make the trip short. A paddleboard is not the same as a boat—as you will come to realize. Use day one to learn and familiarize yourself with a paddleboard.

Converting a SUP board for fishing is very easy. For your first day, the above gear is enough and then you can learn what else you need as you become better at the activity. Make sure you choose the best SUP fishing board according to your preferences and do not be in a hurry. The rest of the gear is easier to choose unless you have special preferences. Take the tips into consideration for both your safety and convenience. Lastly, have fun—and lots of it.

Paddle Board Fishing vs Pontoon Boat Fishing

Paddle board fishing is a unique and intimate way to fish that brings you closer to the water and the action. It’s a minimalist approach that requires balance, stealth, and a keen awareness of your surroundings. The advantages of paddle board fishing include:

  • Mobility : Fishing paddleboards are lightweight and easy to transport. You can easily carry them to remote fishing spots that are inaccessible to larger boats.
  • Stealth : Paddle boards are quiet and create minimal disturbance in the water, allowing you to approach fish without scaring them away.
  • Exercise : Paddle boarding is a full-body workout that combines strength, balance, and endurance.

However, paddle board fishing also has its limitations. The space for gear and catches is limited, and it can be challenging in rough water conditions.

Pontoon boat fishing, on the other hand, offers a more comfortable and social fishing experience. It’s ideal for group fishing trips and for those who prefer a relaxed, leisurely pace. The advantages of pontoon boat fishing include:

  • Space and Comfort : Pontoon boats offer plenty of space for fishing gear, coolers, and seating. They also often have amenities like onboard toilets, grills, and even sleeping quarters.
  • Stability : Pontoon boats are very stable, making them a good choice for families with children or for those who are less sure-footed.
  • Versatility : Pontoon boats can be used for a variety of activities beyond fishing, such as swimming, sunbathing, and water sports.

The main drawbacks of pontoon boat fishing are the higher costs associated with purchasing and maintaining the boat, as well as the difficulty of navigating in shallow or narrow waters. The choice between paddle board fishing and pontoon boat fishing largely depends on your personal preferences, budget, and the type of fishing experience you’re seeking.

Paddleboard Fishing Cons

  • Limited Storage : Less storage space for gear compared to kayaks, typically just bungee storage areas.
  • Stability Concerns : Can be less stable than kayaks, especially in rough waters.
  • Comfort : Standing for long periods can be tiring, and seating options (if available) are less comfortable.
  • Exposure to Elements : More exposed to wind and water splashes, which might affect comfort and fishing effectiveness.

Kayak Fishing Pros

  • Enhanced Stability : Designed for stability, allowing for fishing in various conditions, including the ability to stand in some models.

Kayak Fishing Cons

  • Transportation Challenges : Heavier and more cumbersome to transport, especially solid models.
  • Cost : Can be more expensive, with a wide range of prices depending on features and design.
  • Less Visibility : The sitting position offers a lower vantage point compared to standing on a paddleboard.
  • Space Limitations in Sit-in Models : Movement is more restricted, and it’s harder to stand up, affecting fishing flexibility.

Live L2 Fish Paddle Board

$ 2,299.00

The breakthrough design of the L2Fish allows paddlers to enjoy the most demanding stand-up paddle activities from fishing, to hunting, windsurfing, yoga, and even camping. Utilizing a catamaran style hull and hollow core construction, the L2Fish maximizes buoyancy and greatly reduces the weight to volume ratio. The large tunnel in the hull minimizes the surface area on the water, allowing the L2Fish to slice through the water with speed to rival many racing boards on the market today.

catasup padamaran standamaran supCAT

picture of a paddleboard featuring two pontoons and a deck.

June 26, 2022 Shades of green loaded with happy birds surround me on our deck. It's light at 0500ish. My coffee steams a bit. Life is good! As always, a supCAT starts with two pontoons and a deck. It includes a base set of ‘build to order’ features and can also include optional add-ons like:a variety of lengths and widths, several different wood species, ‘pinstripes’, a custom decal, hatches, and ‘one of a kind’ deck designs.

There's something about wood boats that is hard to quantify. For me as a builder, I love the smell when I'm working the wood into shape, the feel of a spokeshave as it moves across a piece of wood, and the look of the wood as it comes alive under epoxy or varnish. As a paddler, the feel of a wood boat as it slips through the water is very satisfying.

Pictures below are from the July 2018 supCAT splash. It handled well and felt great. As the pics show, this fourteen foot model nicely fits two people.

  • length - the supCAT pictured above is 14 feet long and 32 inches wide. 12 foot supCATs are possible, as are even longer (expedition anyone??) supCATs
  • wood - white pine (seen above), but western red cedar, redwood, even reclaimed barn board are options,
  • complementary pinstripe woods, e.g. purpleheart, wenge, bubinga,
  • a simple open deck. Plenty of design options are possible - ranging from hatches to built-in fishing rod holders!

Set of 2 Inflatable SUPs to make motorized catamaran.

3-in-1: inflatable stand up paddle boards, sit-on-top kayaks, motorized catamaran for 2 people.

Unique product, designed to convert 2 inflatable stand up paddle boards into motorized catamaran. Separately, both high pressure inflatable boards can be use for stand up paddling for 2 people. Boards comes with D-rings on top, so that kayak seat or beach chair can be attached with tie downs, to use boards as a sit-n-top kayaks. Or, join both boards together using provided aluminum boards, and you have a catamaran for 2 people. Electric trolling motor can be installed on a transom that is mounted on one of benches. Place 2 beach chairs on top, and that makes perfect set for pleasure cruising or fishing.

Having 2 paddle boards joined together, it also possible to convert this set up into sail catamaran, as a DIY project. Just mount sail on a front aluminum board, with keel in between, and rudder attached to rear board. See below video for example of conversion.

Quick Tips:

  • To attach beach chairs to top of paddle boards, use 4 x D-rings and secure chair with optional tie downs or Velcro straps to these D-rings.
  • Aluminum board with transom can be installed in rear or front of catamaran. Regular trolling motor can be used in rear, or in front if run in reverse. For best experience, rotate control box on top of electric motor 180 degree, by removing screw that holds controls to shaft, rotating it, and re-installing screw back.
  • For better rigidity of assembled catamaran, inflate it to 80%, install and tightly lace all 4 bench holders, then finish inflation to 10psi.
  • For stronger lacing, use parallel method, as shown here.
  • For best speed, get 55lbs trolling electric motor. You will need at least 12V 30Ah battery to run for about 45-1 hour at full speed, depending on weight load and water condition. For much longer run, get much heavier 12V 120Ah battery, or use 2 x 12V 60Ah batteries. Use one battery as far as you want to go, and use 2nd battery to make sure you can get back.
  • Always carry 2 kayak paddles or kayak paddle that can be split in 2 or at least 2 paddle board paddles, just in case if you need to get back to shore in case of emergency with motor or battery.
  • Always carry PFD devices, cell phone and whistle just in case of emergency.
