Built in 1999 by Scarano Boat Building, Adirondack II is reminiscent of a classic turn-of-the-century Pilot Schooner. Like the Pilot Schooners that worked the coast throughout the 19th century she is a wooden hulled traditionally rigged schooner and is a working boat known for her elegant profile and surprising speed. At 80 feet, she provides a comfortable, safe, high-performance sailing experience. With her roomy deck space and large cockpit, Adirondack II can accommodate up to 57 passengers. Her size, comfort and classic lines make Adirondack II the perfect boat for corporate and private sailing charters, leisurely day sails and sunset cruises on Newport Harbor and Narragansett Bay. Built in 2016 by Scarano Boat Building, Sloop Eleanor is a custom designed Scarano 48’ sloop that can accommodate up to 24 guests in her roomy cockpit with wrap-around seating. Her size and classic lines make Eleanor the perfect vessel for a more intimate private boat party .

Built in 1992 by Scarano Boat Building, Schooner Madeleine is a 72 foot sailing beauty. This yacht was specifically designed and built to carry passengers easily and safely sailing through the local waters of Newport. The Schooner Madeleine maintains 19th century sailboat style with a 21st century sailing comfort and convenience. She is certified for up to 49 passengers.

The classic yacht Rum Runner II was built in 1929 at the height of prohibition. This classic boat is certified for up to 49 passengers and is the perfect way to cruise through the Narragansett Bay water with style and a little speed! Adding to the allure of the fleet, for the months of July, August, and September, the esteemed Yacht Full Moon joins as a distinguished member. The Yacht Full Moon, a Grebe Yacht, embodies the epitome of leisure yachting with its rich history and exceptional craftsmanship. Originating from Henry C. Grebe & Company, renowned for their superior yacht design and construction, the Grebe Yacht legacy dates back to the early 20th century. Situated along the scenic Chicago River, Grebe yachts garnered fame for their style and quality, with the Full Moon being a notable 65-foot production from 1950.

Acquired and restored by Scarano Boat Building in 2018, the Full Moon exudes timeless elegance and operates both public cruises and private charters. With meticulous attention to detail, this Grebe Yacht offers a luxurious setting for guests to indulge in leisurely cruises or intimate gatherings, showcasing Newport's coastal charm in unparalleled style.

Whether savoring the romance of a Champagne Sunset Sail, enjoying an afternoon day sail, or hosting a private event aboard these magnificent vessels, Newport Classic Cruises invites guests to immerse themselves in luxury and relaxation while exploring the beauty of Newport Harbor and Narragansett Bay.

With boating season on horizon, Coast Guard, boat captains urge training

Recreational boating accidents claimed 636 lives across the u.s. in 2022, and the coast guard is urging boaters to get training and play it safe this season.

sailboats newport rhode island

Boating can be a lot of fun, but it can also be dangerous, even deadly.

In 2022, recreational boating accidents claimed 636 lives and injured 2,222 people, according to the Coast Guard . Those 4,040 incidents caused some $63 million in property damage. In Rhode Island, there have been nine fatalities since 2020, including three in 2022, according to the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management . (The DEM data is tracked by fiscal year.)

With Memorial Day weekend approaching, the recreational boating season is about to hit full throttle in Rhode Island and across the country. The Coast Guard is marking National Safe Boating Week , May 20 to May 26, by asking boaters "to reflect on the boating behaviors that will keep you, your loved ones, and those around you safe while on the water."

Lack of training is a big factor in boat fatalities

The vast majority of fatal crashes in 2022 happened on boats where the operator had not received boating safety instruction, according to the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard was not able to get the full history of operators on all the crashes, but where the information was known, 74% of deaths were on boats where the operator hadn't received formal boating instruction, the Coast Guard said.

In Rhode Island, more than 36,000 recreational boats are registered but only some recreational boaters are required to have safety training. A boating certificate is required for anyone born on or after Jan. 1, 1986 , who is operating a boat with an engine of 10 horsepower or greater, according to state law . Certification is required for anyone of any age operating a personal watercraft, which includes jet skis and similar craft.

Certification requires passing a written test but no on-the-water training or testing the way a road test is required for a driver's license.

More: Recent drownings are reminders of danger. Key tips for staying safe in RI waters

Want to learn how to drive a boat safely in Rhode Island?

In Rhode Island, at least two private businesses are offering on-the-water boating instruction that can expand a recreational boater's aptitude beyond that classroom instruction.

Freedom Boat Club , which has six locations in Rhode Island, is offering on-the-water instruction out of Warwick and Newport to anyone, not just club members, through its new program, BoatClass, according to Michelle Voss, a spokeswoman.

"We want better boaters out there," said Freedom Captain Tim Wordell.

Rhode Island waters include a mixture of boat operators, according to Wordell, some who know and abide by the rules, but many others who don't know the rules. Not to mention the people who might know them but don't follow them. He likens it to driving through a busy store parking lot, with the potential for conflicts, many coming at high speed, from any direction.

"You don't know what someone else's intentions are," Wordell said.

BoatClass courses are three hours and the charge is $199 for weekday classes and $249 on weekends. It's in addition to the on-the-water training required for club membership. Membership is not required to take the class, but the club offers a discount for those who've taken the class and decide to join.

Capt. David Fetherston, owner of Wickford Boat Rentals , ramped up his training program a few years ago when he realized he was turning away 60% of his potential boat customers because they weren't qualified to operate boats.

"I can't put people out there who don't know what they're doing," Fetherston said.

In affiliation with the Boat U.S. Foundation, Wickford Boat Rentals' In-Command Seamanship Training offers a three-hour on-the-water introductory course for $199. The introductory course doesn't necessarily qualify a person to rent at Wickford Boat Rentals. In-Command Seamanship Training also offers more advanced courses and one-on-one instruction with a captain, Fetherston said.

Top safety tips from the Coast Guard and boat captains

In addition to taking a boating safety course, the Coast Guard is stressing that boaters should always wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket "appropriate to your water activity." (Where the cause of death was known, 75% of fatal boating accident victims drowned, the Coast Guard said. Of those drowning victims, 85% were not wearing a life jacket.)

Here are some other tips:

  • Don't drink and boat. Alcohol use remains the leading contributing factor in fatal boating incidents, the Coast Guard says.
  • Have a reliable means of communication on board.
  • File a float plan with someone you trust, including a recent photo of your boat.
  • Wordell says boaters should keep a close eye on the weather in planning and during their trips. "In the summer, we get pop-up thunderstorms and on the water is not where you want to be," he said.
  • He also stresses operating at a safe speed.

Sightsailing of Newport

Sightsailer

Sightsailer | 46′ sloop.

If you’re looking for spirited, lively sail and like the idea of a smaller number of guests, come sailing on Sightsailer!  Sightsailer sails with a maximum of 13 guests and offers a fast, fun, and comfortable sailing experience.   She is a great boat for a Newport harbor cruise and sail in Narragansett Bay!  Guests may take the helm and sail or sit back and relax!

Sightsailer is 46 feet, light, with a large sail plan and cushioned cockpit. Compared to Aquidneck, Sightsailer is lower to the water, which means you get more of adventurous, race-boat sailing experience.  When it’s windy, Sightsailer will heel (lean) over more than Aquidneck which many find quite exciting!

Sightsailer has a fully cushioned cockpit complete with back and footrests and two swiveling stern seats to take in the action.  When the wind is light to moderate in strength, guests may also sit up on deck.

Guests who will enjoy their sail the most are those who are able-bodied and able to get up and move around, especially on breezy days.  Non-sailors should not be alarmed: the sail is always very smooth.   If Aquidneck is a Cadillac, Sightsailer is a two-seat convertible sports car.  Both are fun, yet in different ways.

Sail through Newport Harbor and Narragansett Bay past all the famous sights. Our captains and crew know the history of the harbor and bay and will point out the highlights.  No sailing experience is required.  Sails are 1.5 hours.  Join us for a morning, afternoon, or sunset sail!

Offering both public sails and private sailing charters, Sightsailer is our most popular boat for private bachelorette parties, charters with larger groups of friends, families, and small corporate outings.

For private charters, Sightsailer has a small, narrow cockpit table for light food, an Igloo cooler for drinks, and a stereo with an iPod interface.  Blankets are available for cooler weather as well as rain jackets in the event of a passing shower.  For private charters, visit our FAQ page for food and drink suggestions.

SPECIAL NOTE: Larger parties on public sails can overwhelm the rest of the guests onboard. If your group exceeds 6 people, you must reserve a private charter. Please fill out a Private Charter Inquiry Form to book a private charter. Please do not try to circumvent this policy.  If you do, we reserve the right to cancel and refund your sail or transfer your group to Aquidneck.

Rhode Island’s Most Expensive Property Lands on the Market for $30M

Rhode Island’s most expensive property, which includes three homes, is up for grabs.

Listed for $30 million, the 3.2-acre waterfront compound overlooks Narragansett Bay in Jamestown, RI .

“It’s one of those places that you have just got to see,” says listing agent Deborah Foppert , of Jamestown Real Estate. “Right as you are coming into Newport and enter the bay, the property is sitting on a bluff overlooking the bay. It’s the first time it is being offered in a very long time.”

Originally named “Harbor Entrance,” the first home constructed here was a 58-room, Queen Anne-style “summer cottage,” as they’re known.

That building was later replaced by three smaller buildings with flexible uses. There are also now two buildable lots here—perfect for a buyer who wants to add more dwellings to the property.

“It was a wedding venue for many years, so it’s pretty special,” Foppert says. “There are three buildings on property, including a three-story main studio that was built in the 1990s as an art studio. The main level is surrounded by glass. … The second floor has a 360-degree view and a glass floor. There is a deck up there. It’s really unbelievable. ”

In addition, the property has one-room cabin with a bathroom, plus a separate, two-story workshop.

Other highlights include 16-foot ceilings, polished concrete floors, and handcrafted Dutch doors.

Perched on a bluff, the property has views that span Newport Bridge and Aquidneck Island to Block Island , Point Judith , and Beavertail .

“You could almost hit a golf ball to Newport,” Foppert notes. “Sailing is the biggest draw to Narragansett Bay, and Newport has some of the best restaurants in the world. It’s kind of like going to Nantucket without having to take a ferry. There are a couple of beautiful coves to swim as well.”

The listing also includes a boat slip at Fort Wetherill Marina.

“You can just walk down the hill to the boatyard and find a guaranteed slip there,” Foppert says.

And for the right family, this property could be a legacy investment.

“An application to the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM) has been approved for an eight-bedroom septic,” Foppert says. “The property is zoned residential, so you could create your own family compound.”

She believes the place will be used as a second home, as it has been “over the past several decades.”

Memorial Day ceremony honors NUWC Division Newport employees who made the ultimate sacrifice

Petty Officer 1st Class Larry W. Fletcher enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1967 before joining the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport, then known as the Naval Underwater Systems Center, in 1985 as a member of the Range Support Office.

Three years later, on Jan. 12, 1988, while serving as an aerial spotter for a torpedo exercise being conducted at a range on Rhode Island Sound, Fletcher was killed when the plane in which he was riding crashed. He was 38 years old.

Thirty-four men, including Fletcher, were honored for having made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their country and the U.S. Navy since Division Newport was formed in 1869. All of them have a story about their commitment, but Fletcher’s only was rediscovered recently, and it was shared during Division Newport’s annual Memorial Day remembrance ceremony held on May 22 at the command’s memorial.

“It is important that we all understand the value of our contributions to the warfighters, the fleet, the Navy and the nation, both today and in years past,” Technical Director Marie Bussiere said. “Without the sacrifice and commitment of these brave Americans, Division Newport wouldn't have evolved into the center of excellence for undersea warfare it is today. Their efforts should be remembered not only on Memorial Day, but every day.”

Retired Adm. Scott Swift, former commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, was the guest speaker at the event. In his remarks, he recalled the shooting at the Washington Navy Yard in September 2013 in which 12 people were killed, all civilians ranging in age from 46 to 73. Two weeks prior, Swift had been assigned to the Pentagon as director of Navy Staff.

In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Swift said he was stunned to learn that, by law, civilians were not eligible for counseling services through the Navy Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Corps. He said he went directly to the Chief of Naval Operations and explained the situation.

“He said, ‘Just do it.’ The regulations, they just don’t apply. They may have had significance in the past, but they have no significance now,” Swift said. “So we did. We provided those services to civilians.”

That tragedy, Swift said, changed his view of Navy civilian employees.

“I look around at this audience, and I see all of you as Sailors,” Swift told the crowd of roughly 75 people. “You all serve your country, you all have focused on committing yourself to national security and national defense through your service in the Navy. Every one of us is a warrior. Every Sailor is a warrior, regardless of your rate or ranking, what your civilian job is.

“Not only on this Memorial Day, but every Memorial Day going forward, think of yourself as being part of this celebration. You have sacrificed as much as any other Sailor, in uniform or out of uniform.”

When Swift finished his address, he and Division Newport Commanding Officer Capt. Chad Hennings placed a wreath at the base of the memorial that is emblazoned with the names of the men killed while working at Division Newport. Sgt. Kurt Charles of the 215th Army Band in Fall River, Massachusetts, then played a rendition of “Taps” on the bugle.

The stone marker was erected in 1930 at Government Landing in downtown Newport before being moved in 1966 to its current location, under the flag at the warfare center.

Caroline Diette, acting director of Corporate Communications and master of ceremonies for the event, opened the memorial by reading the names of the fallen. Following each one, Petty Officer 2nd Class Alex Hughes tolled the command bell two times. Before introducing Swift, Hennings explained the significance of the tolling of the bells.

“It’s a time-honored tradition in the submarine force,” Hennings said. “Every April, at the submarine birthday balls, the submarine force will gather together and toll the ball once for each submarine that has been lost in our nation’s history through various world wars and conflicts.

“Parallel to that ceremony, what we do matters,” he said. “Your sacrifice, your work on behalf of the nation, the country, the fleet and the submarine force is just as important, and it’s why we observe the same reverence at this solemn event.”

Fletcher’s ultimate sacrifice

A little more than a year before his death, Fletcher was hailed as a hero for an act of bravery. On the evening of Dec. 11, 1986, Fletcher, set to make a patrol of the range, heard a voice of distress coming from the area known as Stillwater Basin (now called Narragansett Bay Testing Facility). In the water was Dirk Patriarca, who had crashed his commercial helicopter in what had been a driving snowstorm.

Fletcher and a support contractor quickly jumped into a 72-foot torpedo retriever boat and came to the aid of Patriarca, who was straddling one of the pontoons of his now-submerged aircraft. Fletcher tossed the man a rope and pulled him to safety. Having lost partial use of his hands and legs because of the frigid water temperature, Patriarca was taken to the Naval Hospital, where he was treated for a mild case of hypothermia.

“I’m just glad the guy’s all right,” Fletcher told reporters the day after the incident. “The only thing I was concerned about was getting him into something warm.”

Thirteen months later, Fletcher was not as fortunate while helping conduct routine torpedo tests. He was riding in a Cessna 152 single-engine plane piloted by Michael Pratt when it crashed five miles east of Point Judith in Narragansett. Pratt was able to escape from the wreckage and was pulled from the 38-degree water, but Fletcher was not immediately located.

After an extensive search, his body was pulled from the water on Jan. 22, 1988. It is believed Fletcher was unable to extract himself from the aircraft before it sank.

Born on Nov. 7, 1949, Fletcher left behind a wife, Margaret Rankin Fletcher, and two daughters, Jade Lauren Fletcher and Trinity Elise Fletcher. A memorial fund was established in his name.

Blue Angels set to wow Annapolis crowds at Commissioning Week. Here's what to know

sailboats newport rhode island

After a successful dress rehearsal, the Blue Angels are prepping for a full air show above the Naval Academy's Commissioning Week on Wednesday.

U.S. Navy flight demonstration team is also set to perform a flyover above the graduation and commissioning ceremony at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium at 10 a.m. Friday morning ahead of their Jones Beach Air Show in New York Saturday.

If you're looking to watch the Blue Angels perform in Annapolis, here's a look at the schedule , traffic info and what to expect.

When do the Blue Angels fly in Annapolis?

The Blue Angels will perform over Annapolis at 2 p.m. on May 21-22.

Maritime traffic in the Severn River will be closed to all unauthorized traffic around 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday and 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Can the public watch the Blue Angels Annapolis air show?

Yes, the Blue Angels’ performance at the Naval Academy in Annapolis is open to the public, though not quite to the same degree as others that provide a dedicated space for public viewing. However, there are plenty of vantage spots that you can consider.

Blue Angels movie: Generations of pilots watch Blue Angels documentary premiere in Pensacola

In past shows, people have lined up along the bridge between Eastport and Annapolis and City Dock. Onboard the Naval Academy, the Hospital Point is another favorite.

And, of course, anyone with a boat is able to anchor in Severn River or Spa Creek, though they should be mindful of maritime restrictions put in place during the duration of the show.

Is the Severn River open to public boats?

Spectators can watch the Blue Angels fly above Annapolis by boat, but they will need to be aware of zones that will be temporarily restricted during the show.

These channels will be marked with red and green buoys. The channel must be kept clear of anchored boats throughout the show. Anchoring outside of these zones is fine.

The best places to anchor are off Greenbury Point, by Carr Creek, or on the other side of the flight box, closer to the Rt. 50 Bridge, according to the Annapolis website.

Where can you park to watch the Blue Angels Annapolis air show?

The Blue Angels Annapolis air show isn't a typical show, so finding a place to park and a vantage point can be difficult. The city of Annapolis posted traffic information that can help you find the best option.

Parking : Parking at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium and taking the free shuttle to enter through the Visitor Center at Gate One is the easiest option. If you're headed downtown, the city garages are another safe bet. These options include Hillman (150 Gorman St.), Gott’s (45 Calvert St.), Knighton (1A Colonial Ave.), and Park Place (One Park Place).

Heavy traffic : There will undoubtedly be heavy traffic, so prepare in advance by giving yourself extra time for travel. Download the “Prepare Me Annapolis” mobile app (Apple/Android) to receive local traffic alerts. The city says that traffic around the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Rowe Boulevard could be especially slow until about 3 p.m. on Friday.

Downtown parking : Expect parking to be limited throughout the week. Visit  www.AnnapolisParking.com  to reserve garage parking at Gott’s and Knighton garages. The city says there will be strict enforcement of metered parking, two-hour limited spaces, Residential Permit Zones and red zones. Visitors are strongly encouraged to park at Knighton (Corner of Colonial Avenue and West Street) and Park Place (Just off of West Street and Spa Road) garages and take the free downtown “magenta” shuttle. The shuttle can be tracked using the transloc app or on the web:  https://accessannapolis.transloc.com/routes .

Road and bridge closures during Blue Angels Annapolis air show

The Route 450 (Naval Academy) bridge will be closed between 10:45 a.m. and 3:45 p.m. for the Blue Angels rehearsal on Tuesday. It will close again on Wednesday between 1:45 and 4 p.m. for the main show.

What to know about boating to the Blue Angels Annapolis air show

Boaters must pay close attention to markers that delineate exclusionary zones and temporary channels (marked by red and green buoys) on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Annapolis Harbormaster operates on VHF 17. The area of Spa Creek and the Severn River will be patrolled by the U.S. Coast Guard, Department of Natural Resources Police, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Annapolis Harbormaster, Annapolis Police and Annapolis Fire Rescue boats.

For complete information on maritime traffic rules and procedures, visit: the Annapolis  Harbormaster’s web page on maritime rules for Blue Angels .

What to expect at a Blue Angels air show?

If you’re never been to a Blue Angels air show, you’re in for a treat. Plan for an all-day event, from waiting in line as you await the opening gates at 8:30 a.m. to when the show wraps up about eight hours later.

Once the gates open, depending on which show you’re attending, you’ll likely be able to meander through vendors, claim spots to watch the show, enjoy performances from civilian and other military teams and learn about some aeronautical history.

Each show has a fairly strict schedule it follows, which can be found online. Taking a peek, you’ll see that there’s something to keep your attention every 30 minutes to an hour, starting with a parachute demonstrations and ending with a demonstration from Fat Albert just before the Blue Angels take to the skies.

How long do the Blue Angels fly?

A Blue Angels air show is typically an all-day event spanning about eight hours. Civilian acts and other military performers take to the skies throughout the day leading up to the final event: the Blue Angels. Fat Albert will lead the Blues with a short 10-15-minute demonstration, and the Blues will perform for about an hour afterward.

What planes do the Blue Angels fly?

In 2021, the Blue Angels started flying in a new airplane for the first time in more than 30 years — the  Super Hornet F/A-18 E/F . The new jets are 25% larger, fly 40% further, remain on station 80% longer and can carry more weapons than their predecessors. The team previously flew F/A-18 Hornets, which they transitioned to from the A-4F Skyhawk II in 1986.

How fast do the Blue Angels fly?

The new Super Hornets can reach top speeds just under Mach 2 (about 1,400 miles per hour), almost twice the speed of sound. The jets can climb at a maximum rate of 30,000 feet per minute.

Blue Angels pilot salary

Blue Angels pilot salaries are no different from what their pay would typically be, based on rank and time in service.

Where are the Blue Angels based?

The Blue Angels are based onboard Naval Air Station Pensacola in Pensacola, Florida.
