MILAN — Italian financial police has seized a Russian-owned superyacht valued at $578 million in the port of Trieste as part of seizures of oligarch wealth to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin to halt the war on Ukraine.

The “Sy A” yacht was identified by Italian police as belonging to billionaire Andrey Igorevich Melnichenko, who made a fortune in fertilizer production and coal energy. It was seized Friday evening.

143m Nobiskrug superyacht Sailing Yacht A "arrested" in Trieste

Related articles, superyacht directory.

The 143 metre Nobiskrug superyacht Sailing Yacht A has been "arrested" in Trieste by local authorities following new economic sanctions by the European Union against Russia.

The news was confirmed on March 12 by Ferdinando Giugliano, media advisor to Italy’s prime minister, who announced that the Guardia di Finanza had boarded the vessel while it lay in a dry dock in the Port of Trieste.

The sail-assisted motor yacht was commissioned in 2011 by Russian industrialist Andrey Melnichenko, who was named by EU officials in the latest wave of economic sanctions targeting key players in the agricultural, pharmaceutical and telecommunications industries that provide significant revenue to the Russian Federation.

However, Alex Andreev, a spokesman for Melnichenko, told BOAT International that the sanctions were "baseless" and "unjustified". "Andrey Melnichenko is an international self-made businessman, entrepreneur and investor in children's education. He has no relation to the tragic events in Ukraine. He has no political affiliations. There is no justification whatsoever for placing him on the EU sanctions list."

He added: "To draw a parallel between attending a meeting through membership in a business council, just as dozens of businesspeople from both Russia and Europe have done in the past, and undermining or threatening a country is absurd and nonsensical. We will be disputing these baseless and unjustified sanctions and believe that the rule of law and common sense will prevail."

Melnichenko is the founder of major fertiliser producer EuroChem Group as well as coal producer SUEK. On March 9 he resigned as a member of the board and non-executive director of both companies. Andreev confirmed that both EuroChem Group and SUEK are "100% privately owned and not affiliated with any government."

Sailing Yacht A is in the port undergoing planned improvement works on the boom of its forward mast and additional "fine-tuning to improve its navigation and save even more fuel, using the most innovative environmental technology developed for the vessel", the spokesman confirmed.

The news follows a handful of arrests in Europe that began with the confiscation of motor yacht Amore Vero in La Ciotat, followed by the arrest of motor yachts Lady M and Lena lying in Imperia and Sanremo respectively.

Luxusjacht „Sailing Yacht A“

Euro.

It’s the largest boat race in the world, but what we’ve always love about Barcolana is the sheer anarchy of it. This yearly boat race boasts rickety two-man sail boats, professional yachts, and literally anything in between. Some take to the sea heavy with crew members and sponsorship in a serious attempt to win the race, others take a packed lunch (always a good idea if the wind drops and the race takes longer than expected) and a more leisurely approach. After the deafening starting cannon, seen from the hills above, the race resembles a disorganized swarm of tiny white sails migrating out to sea.

Details of the various events on offer for the  55th Barcolana , which runs from 29 September to the main race on Sunday October 8th at 10 AM, are provided  on Barcolana’s website. There will be stalls along the seafront and events all over the city, as this unique boat race is a celebration of the spirit of Trieste and its connection with the sea.

“Barcolana represents the spirit of our town,” SVBG president Mitja Gialuz told us. “The beauty of our regatta is that all boats can participate. Whether they’re rickety two-man sail boats, professional yachts, or literally anything in between. Organizing regatta in the past two years wasn’t easy. We went through with it in 2020 despite Covid, then had to cancel, for the first time in its history due to the Bora wind, taught us a lot that year: we forged an even stronger bond with our competitors and our public, and this has prepared us for new challenges. In 2021 the weather conditions were really harsh, yet we made the race happen anyway.  The 2022 was truly spectacular. We hope this 2023 regatta will be even better.”

“We’re ready for an extraordinary edition,” continued  SVBG President Mitja Gialuz , “which has been organized in synergy with local institutions, our presenting partner Generali, and the yacht clubs that contributed to designing this great event which allows us to promote the whole Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. Together we have built the Barcolana Crew, the largest crew in the world, which is about to arrive in Trieste. Many of the faces that make up the Barcolana Crew have already been the protagonists of our graphics and promotion of the event, and they bring to completion the sailors’ portraits project that was started last year by famous photographer Carlo Borlenghi.”

On the eve of the regatta, Barcolana55 and Trieste will welcome the winner of last year’s edition, the American yacht owner Wendy Schmidt , who will arrive on Saturday 7th October for the traditional ceremony of returning the Barcolana Cup and the Women in Sailing Cup, to be handed down to the new winner.

The calendar features over 250 events, including regattas and gatherings organised directly by the Barcolana , and initiatives by local associations and organisations who proposed their own activities in the bigger framework of the event. “ The calendar brings together the city in proposing activities open to everybody and dedicated to whoever will be in Trieste in the ten days of the event, ”  Gialuz  said.

Barcolana Young , the young sailors regatta, as well as  Barcolana by Night , a nighttime boat race (or perhaps more like a battle) on the eve of the main Barcolana regatta will be a sight to see!

There are several options for viewing the regatta, from strolling down to the seafront for a close-up view of the start, to climbing one of the many hills (Prosecco is a favorite, as it hangs over the starting point and offers unrivalled views, but hills such as San Luigi and San Giusto also provide beautiful, if more distant view). All hills can be reached by car and bus, although do check for road closures and bus  diversions  to make sure you’re not caught out.

While you’re waiting, you can always take a walk by the sea to check out the sailing teams who will be racing this year, many of whom are moored along the seafront. The boats are already gathering, the water’s fine. Come enjoy a few days at the races!

Details of the various events on offer for the  55th Barcolana , which runs from 29 September to the main race on Sunday October 8th at 10.30 AM can be found on www.barcolana.it .

Barcolana – Trieste

September 30th-october 8th,2023. the largest sailing regatta in the world. collateral events.

Barcolana - Friuli Venezia Giulia - Italy

From September 30th to October 8th, 2023 is the “Barcolana week”, the sailing regatta that has been in the Guinness World Records since 2018 as the largest regatta in the world: 2689 boats registered.

Now Barcolana reached its 55th edition and it is an event known all over the world and the biggest event for the city of Trieste.

The regatta and the participants The Barcolana is held every year on the second Sunday of October in the Gulf of Trieste, between Miramare Castle and the stretch of sea in front of Piazza Unità d’Italia. Its particular formula makes it a unique event in the international sailing scene: from the same starting line professional sailors and simple enthusiasts compete side by side on the most various boats, racing machines and simple family yachts, divided into categories according to length.

The first edition (1969) was attended by 51 boats from the Trieste sailing clubs. Then, over the years many great names in the international sailing wanted to participate such as Paul Cayard, Ben Ainslie, Russell Coutts, James Spithill, Dean Barker, Vasilij Žbogar, Brad Butterwort and Jochen Schümann and great Italian sailors such as Cino Ricci, Mauro Pelaschier, Luca Devoti, Giorgio Gorla, Massimiliano Sirena, Francesco de Angelis, Vasco Vascotto. And also sportsmen from other disciplines and well-known personalities such as Tina Maze, Zvonimir Boban, Kristian Ghedina, Andrea Lo Cicero, Primož Roglič, Ranieri III of Monaco, Deborah Compagnoni.

An increasingly important event Every year about 25,000 sailors take part in the Barcolana and the public exceeds 300,000 people following the regatta both from the shores of Trieste and from the high ground of the Carso. To highlight the importance that the Barcolana has assumed over the years, it is enough to say that the Amerigo Vespucci, the Navy’s training ship, took part in the 50th edition (2018) and the starting line of the regatta was flown over by the Frecce Tricolori, the aerobatic team of the Italian Air Force.

Route The regatta takes place on a course of about 15 miles with fixed vertices, a quadrilateral with a starting line set between the Miramare Castle and the headquarters of the Sailing Company of Barcola and Grignano, and the finish line in the stretch of sea in front of Piazza Unità of Italy in Trieste.

Side events Although the regatta is held on Sunday morning, the organization has expanded to include a series of events on the sea and in the city for the previous ten days . In recent years there have been several regattas for young people, vintage boats, and also a swimming challenge…

INFORMATION For information about the program, go to the website>>> For regatta registration procedures send an email>>> See the Facebook page of the event>>>

10 Reasons to Love Trieste

Trieste (Triest in German, Trst in Slovenian and Croatian) is a city in North-East Italy that was once a very influential and powerful centre of politics, literature, music, art and culture under Austrian-Hungarian dominion.

Today, Trieste is often forgotten as tourists head off to bigger Italian cities like Rome, Milan, and Trieste's archrival Venice. But those tourists miss out on a very charming and underestimated city, with a quiet and lovely almost Eastern European atmosphere, several pubs and cafes, some stunning architecture and a beautiful sea view. It was also, for a while, the residence of the famous Irish writer, James Joyce. Click on the above button to find out more...

Trieste is located in the easternmost region of Italy, bordered by Slovenia and the Adriatic Sea. The Gulf of Trieste serves as a natural port that spans over an area of 55 km wide. Besides the opportunity to sail and discover hidden bays, coves, and beaches, the Gulf of Trieste offers watersport activities and endless fun. Among the splendors of the coast and the wonderful idea to rent a boat in Trieste, a tour to the historical and architectural wonders of the city is highly recommended. From 1382 to 1918 Trieste belonged to the Habsburg Monarchy and became the fourth-largest city in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In 1920, it was transferred to Italy and throughout the 20th century many great writers lived here, among them were Umberto Saba, Italo Svevo, and James Royce.

Trieste hosts the biggest sailing regatta in the world.  It is known as the Barcolana and has roughly 2,200 yachts lined up on its starting line every October. Trieste also hosts the second-largest synagogue in Europe, the biggest cave visited by tourists (known as the Grotta Gigante), and the biggest sea-facing square in Europe (known as the Piazza Unita). The city offers more than 700 cafés. It has been referred to as the largest coffee harbor of the Mediterranean.

For some extra sightseeing options, you can visit the Canal Grande, the Roman theater, and the Miramare castle. Trieste forms a Karst plateau, where many small villages (such as Prosecco, San Dorligo Della Valle, and Samatorza) offer wild excursions that range from trekking to kayaking and scuba diving. Once you have had your fill of the summer street life of Trieste, it is time for you to combine an adventure by the sea and explore the hidden gems that stretch from the gulf to the Adriatic Sea.

To spend a wonderful yacht charter holiday in Trieste, you can plan a trip to Manfalcone or explore the shores of Slovenia. If you choose to head out from the Gulf of Trieste towards the Slovenian coast, you can make a stop at Muggia. Porto San Rocco is a tourist harbor with excellent facilities and offers a great stop before reaching Koper and Izola. The Slovenian coast is only 46 km long but offers a fantastic seaside experience. Towns you can explore include Piran and Portoroz. They both have a unique history and a true spirit of a Meditteranean lifestyle. By renting a sailboat with a skipper, you can plan a special cruise towards Venice or continue sailing down the Istrian coast towards Porec and Rovinj.

By renting a boat in Trieste, you may also plan a day cruise to Duino and Manfalcone.

Duino is renowned for its limestone cliffs and Natural Reserve, which offer perfect diving and snorkeling activities. Further along the coast, you will find the magnificent Bay of Sistiana and the exclusive beachfront of Portopiccolo. Baia Sistiana is considered one of the best beaches of Duino. This is also where you can find the biggest cave in Europe, known as the Grotta Gigante. Not too far from there, you will find Marina Julia; a quintessential wind spot for kite-surfing fans. The shallow coastal waters and the North-easterly bora winds create the perfect conditions to entertain sport and sailing enthusiasts.

If you want to extend your cruise, you can plan an excursion towards Grado, a historic center situated on a narrow strip of land, surrounded by lagoons. Guests may enjoy the beaches, waterfront cafés, and stroll inside the town. Some beaches you must visit around the lagoon include Spiaggia Principale and Spiuaggia Costa Azzurra. If you want to relive the dramatic history of the Roman Empire, Grado has plenty of sites that dive into the ruins of the ancient Basilica as well as the remains of public baths.
