SS Delphine

Motor Yacht

SS Delphine is a remnant of a bygone era: built in 1921 for Horace Dodge, scion of one of the largest American automotive manufacturers, this luxury motor yacht has retained its style and grace. Registered as a passenger ship and SOLAS certified to carry up 36 passengers, SS Delphine can host up to 150 guests for coastal navigation while an expert, international crew of 24 look after the needs of every guest.

Currently based year-round in the Port of Monaco, SS Delphine was originally built in 1921 by Great Lakes Engineering for the Dodge family and went on to serve in the second world war as the flagship of Admiral Earnest King, Commander in Chief of the US fleet. After a long down time, SS Delphine has been resurrected following a complete and painstaking restoration by her new owners and re-commissioned in 2003. The detailing and restoration work has remained faithful to the era in which SS Delphine was originally constructed and provides an atmosphere of luxury and elegance.

A great charter vessel for families, friends or corporate functions, the 78.5 metre SS Delphine offers ample space for entertaining on a grand scale. Due to her Portugese flag, the Captain may perform a legal ceremony, which could provide the perfect venue for a sumptuous wedding. The public areas of this incredible superyacht have independent music systems which can be interconnected, while the smoking room has WIFI available. SS Delphine boasts a bar and lounge with a stunning ¾ concert Steinway piano and a Disklavier Yamaha piano for which a lounge bar pianist can be added to the crew list. A Playstation II and flat screen television are available in the Delphine Lounge.

Onboard life is as luxurious as it must have been in the 20’s: SS Delphine sleeps 26 guests in 11 double staterooms, including two king-sized VIP suites and a cabin with four bunks. Every suite, stateroom and cabin have en-suite bathrooms, televisions, safes, mini bars, entertainment systems and telephones allowing both intercom and satellite use. The two VIP suites also boast flat screens and capacious lounge areas.

Guest onboard the lovely SS Delphine will adore her fantastic amenities: a swimming pool with jet stream, massage bath, Turkish bath, sauna accommodating up to six people, fully equipped fitness room and hair salon. Added to this, the extensive outside deck areas total 1000 square metres of space to entertain and sunbathe.

Water lovers will adore the arsenal of toys that SS Delphine holds which includes four wave runners, water –skiing equipment, which includes wave boards and skis, inflatable donuts and a banana, snorkelling gear, wetsuits and fishing rods. Three inflatable tenders of 75, 115 and 250hp capable of carrying 20 people are available as well as two classic tenders capable of carrying up to 10 people.

The interior of the SS-DELPHINE yacht was spearheaded by Tiffanys Of New York, founded back in 1837 by Charles Lewis Tiffany, and is currently known for its luxury goods and diamond and silver jewelry.

She is presently the first yacht to be designed by the company. Built for comfort and entertainment, you can find all the amenities you could expect from such a stunning and classic superyacht.

Inside the SS-DELPHINE yacht is a gym, partnered with some top-of-the-line fitness equipment for all the health-conscious onboard guests.

In addition to this, she has a standard jacuzzi for relaxation and an excellent and vast view deck that can hold upwards of 50 people when docked.

Needless to say, the SS-DELPHINE yacht is fitted with air-conditioning to keep guests comfortable while venturing into the far seas.

She can also accommodate many guests with ease and is currently fitted with 12 suites and two VIP cabins that can hold four people to welcome up to 26 guests.

In addition to this, she can have 24 and up to 27 crew members at a time to attend to guests’ needs.

Specifications

The SS-DELPHINE yacht boasts a whopping 78.57 meters or 258 feet from end to end, a beam of 10.82 meters or 35.6 feet, and a draft of 6.6 meters or 21.8 feet.

Powered by her extremely powerful motors, she can comfortably cruise at a speed of 9 knots and can go up to a maximum speed of 13 knots. 

Despite her weighing approximately 1,255 tons with all the equipment and fuel on board, because of her ginormous 250,000-liter fuel tank and her very efficient power-consumption rate of just 1000 liters per hour, she can easily travel up to 2500 nautical miles at a time.

She was engineered with a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure. And she is super stable when going out to see, thanks to her onboard stabilizer, and is even more stable once she anchors in.

SS-DELPHINE was exteriorly designed by Henry J. Gielow, which was the one responsible for giving her iconic elegant lines. Henry J. Gielow is a famous and renowned exterior designer.

Gielow has been responsible for the design of the El Boughaz I, 53.3 meters long, the Yanbu, which is 50.23 meters long, and the Olympus. SS-Delphine is currently the longest superyacht Henry J. Gielow designed.

Motor yacht DELPHINE is one of the truly wonderful classic motor yachts. M/Y DELPHINE is certainly a very unique and exceptional superyacht. Please note that she is not available for yacht charters.

DELPHINE was first launched way back in 1921 in Michigan. At 257.8ft and 1,342 tons SS Delphine was the largest private yacht built in the United States which is still in afloat to this day.

In September of 2003 S.S. Delphine was re-launched and re-christened, by H.S.H Princess Stephanie of Monaco, after a thorough refit. Indeed, she won the annual showboats award for best refit in 2004.

Perhaps unusually for a lovely classic yacht, DELPHINE also offers some modern luxuries such as on her boat deck where a bar, a Spa Pool jet swim spa has been installed along with a large sunbathing and lounge area. Her Spa Pool pool can use either fresh or salt water.

The ‘Orlop Deck’ hosts the classic yacht’s health and fitness facilities and is located beneath the guest staterooms. Included is a professional hairdressing salon, a Spa Pool for two, a sauna, and a Turkish bath steam room as well as wonderful mosaic tiled dressing rooms and showers. The superyacht's gym offers electrical entertainment with televisions, a music system, a mini bar and a portable massage table.

The DELPHINE Master Suite showcases a modern Victorian style – called the Horace & Anna Dodge Suite – and includes his-and-hers dressing rooms and a large bathroom, with separate shower, as decorated sumptuously in onyx and marble. A beautiful antique painting discreetly covers a large flat screen TV and DVD.

Her VIP Suite – called the Delphine Suite - is positioned on the classic motor yacht’s main deck and provides a direct access to a outside deck corridor. This suite is similar to the Dodge suite in that it has Crotch Mahogany wood paneling and also hidden behind a painting is a flat screen television with DVD.

SS Delphine Specifications

The motor yacht’s second VIP suite is also spacious and bright. Likewise located on the yacht’s main deck, there is direct access to the exterior promenade.

DELHINE’s remaining guest suites are located on the lower deck and have televisions, DVD players, Pioneer music systems, safes, mini bars, and are connected by interphone to all the other rooms. Lights can be dimmed to provide an ambient atmosphere. All the marble en suite bathrooms are fully equipped to five star standards.

SS Delphine can accommodation in total 26 guests. She has in total 12 guests cabins : Main Deck -Master Suite, The Horace & Anna Dodge Suite: A very large suite with a spacious en-suite bathroom. The suite includes his-and-hers dressing rooms. Safe, mini-bar. -VIP Suite, The Delphine Suite: Situated on the main deck, this suite is almost the same size as the master, with en-suite bathroom. There is a walk-in closet, mini-bar and safe. There is direct access to the exterior from this suite. -VIP Suite, The Horace-Dodge Suite: Situated on the main deck, this suite, with en-suite bathroom has direct access to the exterior from this suite. Mini-bar and safe. -Eight Double Guest Suites: The guest Suites are situated on the lower deck, all are en-suite bathrooms. All with safes and mini-bars. -Twin Cabin: Also situated on the lower deck and is independent from the guest suites. Has its own en-suite bathroom.It consists of four large upper and lower single beds. This cabin is ideal for clients staff, i.e. nannies etc. Safe and mini-bar. Each cabin has a unique interior design and all are very spacious. Music room : large-bar - Grand piano steinway 3/4 Smoking room : cosy Chesterfiel salon Delphine Lounge : cinema dolby surround-system , disklavier pinao, outside bar, game table, etc. Boat deck : Spa Pool jet swim Spa, bar, sunbathing area.

Luxuriously furnished guest suites all have en-suite baths, satellite TV, safes, minibars, music systems, and telephones for satellite/intercom use. Wi-Fi is available on the promenade deck, in the yacht’s smoking room, which is replete with oversized tufted leather furniture. On this deck, you can also relax on one of the silk-upholstered, elegantly carved, period sofas in Delphine’s lounge. The yacht’s two classic wooden tenders from the 1920s, still raised and lowered manually, can be found here as well. On the main deck, you’ll find the music room, complete with a baby grand piano. On the deck is large Jacuzzi/swimming pool that can be filled with either sea water or fresh water.

The 78.5 meter SS Delphine was fully restored in 2003. It has a maximum speed of 12 knots and a cruising speed of 9 knots, with a range of 2,500 nautical miles at 10 knots.

Historic WWII ship built in Michigan for sale as $22 million luxury yacht

A Michigan-built ship launched nearly 100 years ago before burning, sinking, being restored, serving as a flagship in WWII and, decades later, being restored again, is back to its original state as a luxury yacht.

And it's for sale.

The SS Delphine was built in 1921 for Horace Dodge, co-founder of the Dodge Brothers Motor Car Company.

The 257-foot yacht is for sale at EU19.7, or about $22.4 million.

Currently in Portugal, the SS Delphine is the largest U.S.-built steam yacht from the 1920s that's still in existence today, according to its owner.

The yacht was built by Great Lakes Engineering in River Rouge, a city just southwest of Detroit, and named after Horace Dodge's daughter Delphine.

Horace Dodge was never able to see the launch of the boat himself, as he and his brother Jon died of influenza after attending the National Automobile Show in 1920.

Dodge helped design the yacht's four-cylinder, triple-expansion steam engines, which are still in use today.

"They are silent," said Ineke Bruynooghe, who owns the yacht, about its eco-friendly original engines.

The steam engines only make 80 turns per minute, she said.

"Current engines do 18,000 turns per minute and so there are no vibrations. The longer the voyage, the less consumption," Bruynooghe said.

Originally built for $2 million, the most recent restoration of the ship was a massive undertaking that cost Bruynooghe EU40 million -- about $45 million at the current exchange rate.

And it wasn't the first time the ship was restored.

In 1926, the yacht caught fire and sank in New York's Hudson River. It was recovered and restored by Horace Dodge's wife Anna.

Then in 1940, the yacht struck a rock off Canada's north Manitoulin Island in Lake Huron and had to undergo repairs once again.

During WWII, the SS Delphine was requisitioned by the U.S. Navy and renamed U.S.S. Dauntless to serve the flagship for the Commander in Chief of the US fleet Admiral Earnest King.

Micheal Nethersole, a broker for the firm arranging the sale , said it's believed President Franklin D. Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Russian Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Molotov once held a secret meeting in the ship's smoking lounge:

"After the war, she served as a steam ship training vessel for 18 years, after which she went throughout various owners, finally ending up in France and left in increasing disrepair," reads the yacht's for-sale listing .

Bruynooghe spent six years returning the ship to its original form after purchasing it at scrap metal prices, completing the restoration in 2003.

Princess Stephanie of Monaco rechristened the ship, which now sails under the flag of Portugal.

According to the listing, "the detailing and restoration work has remained faithful to the era in which SS Delphine was originally constructed," including its grand interior, which was designed by Tiffany's.

The dining salon was completely recreated to reflect its original state, including a wooden dome ceiling, dinning tables, sofas and even the carpet.

The SS Delphine can sleep 26 guests in 11 different rooms and has over 3,000-square-feet of deck space.

It also has a swimming pool, massage bath, Turkish bath, a sauna accommodating up to six people, a fitness room and a hair salon.
