Yachtsmans Arms

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

The pub knew we were coming but we didn't have to order in advance. We got our drinks at the bar and the waitress came to the tables and took our food orders. The service was first class. There were a lot of choices and there... were lots of empty plates when we finished.I had cod and chips and a mushy pea puree with home made tarter sauce it was delicious.I believe the fish pie was first class too, the vegetables were cooked to perfection. One of our men had muscles with white wine and cream sauce, chips and french bread, I had never seen such a massive dish of muscles which he said were absolutely delicious. The steak and kidney puddings, fresh veg and mashed potatoes were excellent too as was the liver and bacon. No complaints as far as I know. I will certainly come back. More

Booked a table for Sunday lunch which turned out to be a brilliant decision. We were impressed with the Covid protection methods being deployed I.E., distancing, sanitizers and face coverings. Even though the pub was busy we did not feel crowded at all. The food... was excellent with the Prawn & Crayfish tail cocktail a highlight. Sunday Roast was really good value and a good plate full. We had Peroni beer on tap and a glass of wine with the meal, all well presented and good quality. The most striking aspect of our visit was how hard all of the staff were working to make it a memorable visit for all customers. Nothing was too much trouble, and even though we arrived early we were made to feel welcome and told that we might have to wait a little bit for our order, which was no problem. Superb effort. More

Came across this pub whilst on a day visit to Brightlingsea. We decided on an early lunch and sat outside but just to warn people it was a Wednesday and a lot of tables seemed to have been pre-booked and the place really started to... get busier at around 1pm. It seems very popular so if you can I would book beforehand. The waitress immediately took our drinks orders and brought the menus. She also asked if our dog wanted any water and brought him a bowlful. There is a dog friendly area inside the pub too! There was a good choice of reasonably priced meals on the main menu and specials menu. I ordered the cheese and ham ploughmans from the main menu which was delicious. The ham was good quality and thickly cut which makes a change to the ‘plastic’ ham served in a lot of other places. The rest of the party ordered off the specials menu. My partner cannot stop talking about how nice the pork belly was and my mother had the prawns in garlic which she really enjoyed. I dipped some of my bread in the sauce - gorgeous! The waitresses were attentive and friendly; you didn’t have to wait long to catch their eye for more drinks, etc. The tables were thoroughly cleaned between guests and the staff still wore visors. I just wish this pub was nearer to where I lived. Highly recommended and we will most definitely return! More

The food wasn’t very nice the fat which everything was cooked in could do with changing. The tables were sticky. When we told the staff about the food they wasn’t very accommodating or apologetic just took one portion of chips off the bill!!!! I wouldn’t... recommend this place. What happened to the customer is always right??? More

Food quality fantastic, wait time was a little disappointing, however the food made up for it, we did not book, just turned up at around 12:30, sat in garden as no seating inside, was a nice day so all good, we waiting over estimated time... given of 30 mins, we ordered our food and waited 50 mins. Roast dinner was lovely, chicken was ordered, we realised that the stuffing was missing on both plates and mentioned this to the waitress, she said we should of ordered this when ordering the original meal, and walked away, I looked at my partner and said that’s not right is it? So I called a different server over to which she was polite and went straight into kitchen and brought out what we were going to pay for, apart from that hiccup food was lovely, cauliflower cheese was the best, would of given 5 stars if the first waitress was more attentive. Will go back More

Ann and I both had the fish pie from the ‘ today’s specials’ menu. Fantastic portion. Piping hot but most importantly full of fish. Clearly a home made dish. Desserts of Apple crumble and Sticky toffee pudding were also home made , delicious, large portions... and served with a jug of custard each. This is the place for great pub food, home cooked dishes and desserts at under a £5. Fantastic quality and great value for money. A must visit when in Brightlingsea. Well done to the chef and all the staff. More

We chanced upon this pub when visiting Brightlingsea for the first time. We were able to sit at an outside table and enjoy the sun and a partial view of the harbour. Covid precautions were being observed including hand sanitizer and taking contact details. Our... drinks order was quickly taken and delivered to the table. Payment was contactless. We had a table booked elsewhere otherwise we would probably have stayed for food since the menu included a fresh fish dish that sounded delicious. If we return to the town I think we will try to eat here. More

This pub was really well set up for COVID, it was easy to get a table on the same day. The staff were so attentive throughout and really seemed to enjoy their work! The food was really tasty, nachos to start (could only have been... better with an option for pulled pork!) Wouldn't bother with the ribs again...needed a bit longer on the grill. However the Cajun chicken and steak were well cooked perfectly seasoned and served to perfection! Not enrolled in the Eat Out to Help out scheme but overall a lovely meal. More

This was our first choice for a lunch for the 2 of us or for a bigger celebration with family or friends but no more. We visited early summer to be "welcomed" by a member of staff who was bossy and inattentive. Our request to... eat in the bar area as we always have (as we find the dining area claustrophobic ) was unreservedly refused. We were told those tables were for people arriving with dogs! We decided to avoid visiting during the busy summer period and returned last month after the school holidays were finished. We sat at our previously favourite table in the bar area. Admittedly it is a big table but we had never had a problem before and had shared in busy times. The bar person told us that despite there being no sign requesting this it was for large groups only she was unhappy with us sitting thete. Furthermore if we remained sitting there and a group arrived we would be asked to move! It was midday on a Wednesday and the pub was not busy and we intended to be gone within the hour. However, we did move. During our visit we realised that one part of the bar was unavailable to even wait to order food or drink and the same bar person was not shy to tell people to move. Also there were none of the regulars who had their spot at the bar where they read their paper or put the world to rights. It did not feel like a local pub anymore. Our experience over these 2 visits have led us to believe that the Yachtsman is no longer a friendly, welcoming pub which serves very good food. However, it does not feel like a restaurant either. Unfortunately we will not be returning in the foreseeable future. More

This was a great find and we were glad we booked early both rimes we visited during our 4 day break with grandchildren. First time I had the seafood platter & second the lobster & seafood spaghetti thermidor. Excellent and a good choice of draught... ales. The grandsons were well catered for with the junior menu including sweet. One had sausage, the other chicken gougons on both visits. My wife had the liver & bacon first time, fish & chips second. The staff were friendly and efficient in visors in these post restrictions weeks. The food arrived promptly and the restaurant was busy with potential customers having to be turned away. Parking was on the nearby municipal car park. The pub had character with its maritime theme and quirky navigation aids dotted around. More

Lovely pub right near the Seafront and Old Shipyard. I returned to Brightlingsea after having lived there many years ago. Was pleased to see a lot of things had not changed too much. This pub has had a makeover and a decent outside eating area... makes it very pleasurable eating al fresco. The staff were friendly very attentive and the service was very fast. The food was excellent and my crab was heaven. Served with chips as well, very happy. My partner had the haddock and chips and mushy peas which was also amazing. Great food, great pub and great atmosphere amongst the locals. Worth the trip from Dartford and will hopefully return in the not too distant future. Yummy! More

During a short break based in Brightlingsea, we visited the Yachtsman twice (a lunch and an evening meal). On both occasions the food was delicious, staff were helpful and friendly, and there was a nice atmosphere. Highly recommended.

Entertained here by an elderly relative who took us to this hostelry on the advice of friends. Good friends, good advice ! Great atmosphere ( no frills ), lovely staff and super food at realistic prices. Hearty portions for sure. The best (fresh) veg. I've... had in a long time. Having had the cheese board to follow my fish pie ( excellent ) my one regret is that I forgot to ask whence they sourced the goats' cheese - surely a prize-winner. More

We were staying in the town and this was the closest pub to our holiday home, I'm so glad. The atmospher is very warm and freindly. We visited 4 times at different times of day, Sunday lunch, midweek lunch and evening meal and Just for... a drink on Saturday afternoon. The food was fantastic, reasonably priced and very good quality. We had a drink with the owner and chef on our last evening they are very passionate about their profession and it shows. The locals made us welcome the front of house staff were wonderful, helpful and freindly. We did not try anywhere else because this place suited us for where we were staying and why try and beat it if somewhere has everything you want. You all made our holiday. Thank you. Hope to see you all again sometime. (hope mum and baby are doing well) Jo and Steve More

Ordered bread board for starters up came sliced bread normally used for sandwiches and a stale piece of French bread. The smallest bowl of oil and vinegar but the worst was a bowl of garlic butter to spread on the cold dry bread. Then up... came what was suppose to be moules they were over cooked and most o them broken and empty shells with the smallest mussels in the dish. I complained and got the price of fish taken of the bill. Top prices disgusting food More

Whilst spending a few nights in Brightlingsea we spent a lovely evening in this pub. Plenty of choice on the menu and the food was good - traditional pub grub. A great atmosphere and we are so glad we booked a table because it was full!

Good location and popular with locals and visitors alike, but after stopping by for an early evening drink further investigation of the menu was abandoned after this Greene King estabishment served me a pint of ice cold Abbot ale. A red flag, I'm afraid.
