The sirena 48 has all the features of its longer sisterships, but in a more compact package. wanted: owner-operators looking to cruise long distances., howard walker, howard walker's most recent stories.
“Honey, I shrunk the boat,” might just be the perfect catchphrase for the brand-new Sirena 48. The latest and smallest model in the Sirena line will debut later this year.
From the drawing board of Argentinian naval architect Germán Frers, the 48 features an all-new semi-displacement hull capable of delivering a lively 26-knot top speed.
Frers, who is credited with the design of Sirena’s other offerings (Sirena 58, 68, 78 and 88), incorporated many of the bigger models’ styling cues, like the striking, near-vertical bow, upright, wrap-around windows and sun-pad-rich flybridge and forward deck. The idea was to incorporate most of the features of the larger yachts into a smaller footprint that didn’t compromise on quality of life.
One big surprise-and-delight design feature is the aft cockpit. According to Constantinou, buyers will have the choice of three distinctly different layouts. The more conventional version will have an open cockpit with a large, rear-facing L-shaped dining area and glass panel for views aft.
A more versatile alternative incorporates a rear, forward-facing sofa in the cockpit with a self-contained crew or kids’ cabin beneath it. It offers a single berth with a separate head.
A third option would be for this space to be configured as a toy garage with a large, hydraulic lift-up door opening on to the swim platform.
“It would be spacious enough to store dive tanks, Seabobs or stand-up paddleboards, as well as lines and fenders. It’s all about offering choices and flexibility,” adds Constantinou.
Up in the salon, those extra-large vertical windows are designed to flood the cabin with light. Forward is a U-shaped dining area. The well-equipped galley afthas easy access to the back deck and its al-fresco dining.
While there’s an interior helm station, Constantinou says extra attention was put into the flybridge design and layout as more owners are expected to helm the yacht themselves from “up top.”
The family-friendly design kicks off with a flight of wide, deep steps, rather than a ladder, providing safer, easier access to the flybridge. And up there, sun-worshippers will find a huge, full-width sunpad ahead of the helm station. For entertaining, the rear of the flybridge features a large, wrap-around sofa with seats for eight, and a wetbar with sink close by.
Standard power for this new Sirena 48 is a pair of 480hp Cummins QSB 6.7-liter turbo diesels, though for captains in a hurry, there are optional Volvo D8s packing 550hp each. These will punch the 24-ton Sirena to a 26-knot top speed with a 23-knot friendly cruise.
Constantinou says the new Sirena 48 will make its global debut at this year’s Cannes boat show in September.

The aft cockpit can fit a table and two folding chairs together with a large transverse bench seat that seamlessly continues the indoor/outdoor living space. Intelligent design features such as the foot pedal operated sliding flybridge stairs, starboard sidedeck acrylic “wind stopper” door and overhead handrail further enhance the functionality and comfort found in this area. The transom double gate opens onto a large swim platform with an optional hydraulic lifting system able to carry a 770 Ibs tender or water toy.
Simple well-designed features such as the bathing ladder with swimming pool handrails ensure there is no easier way to enjoy the delights of the sea. On the foredeck there is the option of a sunpad with lift up sections creating forward seating – perfect for relaxing with a drink and a good book. Note the asymmetrical deck layout allows for a wide and well-protected starboard sidedeck with high bulwarks giving safe and easy access to this area.
The generous 20m² flybridge has plenty of space for a comfortable layout so you can enjoy the panorama of the sea every minute of the day. The backrests on either side of the pilot seat provide ample forward facing seating while making passage. Additionally, the transverse vis-à-vis seating and table area create a great area to eat & relax. This can be further complimented by the optional flybridge T-top with an inset sliding soft-top. Aft, there is a transverse wet bar facing forward, which allows the person cooking or serving drinks to socialize with others relaxing on board. The aft flybridge space allows for sun loungers, paddleboards, or other small water accessories.
The main salon – space to relax & entertain.
Entering through the patio doors there is a large L-shaped galley on portside aft with a full height 67-gallon fridge and freezer and large overhead lockers outboard. The standard galley has a gas oven or optional multi-function electric oven, a clever “magic corner” pull-out stowage unit, and cupboards & drawers that ensure plentiful capacity for extended cruising while still allowing space for an optional dishwasher.
The raised edge Corian countertop features a gas or induction cooktop and large sink. Opposite of the galley is a spacious sideboard with cupboards and an interior bottle rack.
The sideboard can be configured with an icemaker, Villeroy & Boch dishware stowage and an illuminated glassware cupboard above. Forward of the galley is a large raised u-shaped dinette providing plentiful seating for up to eight with great views all around and in social proximity to the helm. The aft end of the seat has space for a 23 bottle wine chiller. On the portside dash top, below the window there is a large stowage unit that can house a 40” TV if desired.
The helm station with adjacent side door leading to the starboard midship cleat & bulwark gate allows for easy docking and circulation. The helm has space provisioned for 2 x 12” Raymarine MFD screens and the Beneteau Ship Control system. In addition, an aft docking camera, stern docking lights and the optional Cummins integrated joystick system can be specified for a stress free docking experience. The helm dash top, console and adjustable pilot seat are finished in dark grey creating a clean area for safe passagemaking in all light conditions and complimenting the excellent helm visibility.
In the lower accommodation, entering into the forward master cabin reveals a comfortable double berth with room on both sides of the bed for movement. With headroom of 6’6” and a bed length of 6’6” there is plenty of room for larger occupants. There are overhead lockers & wardrobes, large hull windows with inset portlights & an overhead hatch which floods the cabin with natural light and cross ventilation.
The en-suite bathroom includes a separate shower compartment with a teak slatted seat. The port guest cabin benefits from a large hull window with inset portlight, stowage, wardrobe and two single berths with an infill to convert to a double berth. Note this cabin also features an en-suite door to the portside day head – in which you will also find a separate shower compartment with teak slatted seat. The starboard guest cabin features two portlights, a transverse double berth and a double door wardrobe that is large enough to place an optional washer/dryer in the base.
Personalization of your Swift Trawler 48 is possible with numerous interior and exterior variations. The standard interior wood is in finished in our Alpi Teak stain with an optional Oak finish for a lighter atmosphere. Additional upgrades to the interior finishes are available for the sideboard doors, and owner & port cabin wardrobe doors with wood or crème slatted doors with inset panels. Further interior personalization is possible with a selection of fabric choices for the wheelhouse u-shaped seating near the helm. Exterior fabrics are available in our standard Marlin white marine vinyl or upgraded Dolce 51.
The Swift Trawler 48 is provisioned to sleep 6 passengers, with three cabins in the lower accommodation and additional capacity with an easy-to-convert salon dinette with wrap around privacy curtains as standard equipment.

MICAD naval architects have designed a semi-planing hull that optimises fuel efficiency across the speed range. With 510 US gallons of fuel on board you can expect a range of +600nm at 9 knots displacement speed or 280nm at 18 knots efficient planing speed whilst retaining a fuel reserve of 10%. This in combination with 169 US gallons of fresh water allows for considerable autonomy away from the dock. While Swift Trawler DNA is focused on comfortable & economic cruising - the standard pair of Cummins QSB 6.7 litre 380hp engines allows a top speed of 21 knots with the upgrade 425hp engines giving a top speed of 25 knots. So there is always plentiful “reserve power” available to take the boat beyond 20 knots should the need arise. *Zero sea state, 50% load case, clean hull & drivetrain.
To enjoy the sea with confidence the Swift Trawler 48 is rated for 12 passengers in CE Category B. The hull has been designed to optimize sea-friendly behavior and performance. The slender flared bow of the Swift Trawler 48 cuts through many different sea conditions wonderfully all while retaining efficient, safe and predicable handling.

your dream !
When ultimate comfort is combined with elegance and the pleasure of sailing, your travels become a true dream. For this new model, Nautitech raises the standards of comfort and sensations even higher.
With her forward deck and her inverted bows, the 48 Open will seduce you with a resolutely modern and dynamic design. The Nautitech style is at its best on its flagship model with its distinguished hull lines and superstructure. A combination of expertise and aesthetics that will give you a unique experience and open up new horizons.
Designed by MLYDG, the 48 Open benefits from the latest advances in hydrodynamic performance to ensure the best balance between performance under sail and comfort in the hulls. Nothing has been left to chance in the design of this top-of-the-range boat to combine comfort, feeling at the helm, and ease of maneuvering whatever the conditions. The height of the bridgedeck, the slenderness of the hulls, the sail area, and the control of the displacement, all these elements contribute to a well-balanced boat.
True signature of the Open range, the double aft helm station is ideal for steering at sea and manoeuvring in marinas. A distinctive feature that offers a great view of the sails while remaining connected to the cockpit and the crew for safer sailing and more distance
This openness to the outside world is felt at sea or at anchor. To enjoy this safety, the ergonomics of the deck layout plays a crucial role in allowing smooth movement in the cockpit and on deck.
Comfortable side decks and integrated deck hatches provide unobstructed access to the forward cockpit for manoeuvring or enjoying the remarkable lounge area at sunset.
Open, authentic moments of sharing
The opening of the interior saloon to the outside is an undeniable quality of this new model. An optimized circulation and well-defined spaces will make the border between the interior and the exterior disappear to offer more space on board. This unique concept, revisited by the designer Christophe Chedal-Anglay, takes on a new meaning by centering itself around the bar placed in the heart of the saloon and at the center of gravity of the boat. This iconic element creates a unique living space that adapts to all moments of the day and to all lifestyles. Everyone will find their own use for the space, and all will be able to share these moments together. Each space has its own function, in perfect harmony with you and your crew. A space that will evolve onboard with you.
Guided by the desire to satisfy all navigation and lifestyle programs, five different layouts are proposed. Each project has its own configuration, which one will be yours ?
A modern and elegant atmosphere created in collaboration with the designer Christophe Chedal-Anglay. The 48 Open is available in standard light walnut and optional oak finishing to match with all tastes. Enjoy the spacious kitchen with all the appliances at your fingertips. Benefit also from the iconic bar in the heart of the living area. Close to the mast and located at the center of gravity of the boat, it is where people will join together, discuss the route, and probably "elevate their dream" with enthusiasm. The place that naturally attracts everyone on board. Benefit from the large lounge area and a large chart table.
Unrivaled finishes , modularity , and generous volumes are the keywords used in the development of the 48 OPEN. Take advantage of the quality materials and the soft and pleasant natural light thanks to the large panoramic windows providing a calm and inspiring view of the horizon. This new model of the Open range raises the standards combining comfort and elegance to offer a unique experience of life on board.
Enjoy the comfort of this spacious and luxurious owner suite with its own integrated dressing. Also flooded with natural light from the long window in the hull and above the headboard, this elegant suite is the perfect place to relax.
From design to manufacture, all choices have been guided by the desire to offer a top-of-the-range boat where the term "Quality" takes on its full meaning. You will be able to discover a quality of finish and materials in this very luminous bathroom, thanks to its deck panels which offer ventilation and natural light, and its large mirror. You also have a large resin worktop with an integrated sink, easy to clean, and many storage spaces for your greater comfort.

Easy to handle whether a beginner or expert
The Outremer 45 is a 48 ft catamaran. Easy to control from the helm station, everything is within reach and the clear view over the four corners of the boat guarantees perfect maneuvers, even single-handed.
With its narrow hulls and light weight, the feeling of gliding, well wedged in a comfortable seat with tiller in hand, is exhilarating.
But don’t worry if you leave the helm to the autopilot or if the wind gets stronger: the Outremer 45 is the most forgiving of catamarans. Peace of mind while cruising is non-negotiable on an Outremer, including on this single-handed catamaran.
All maneuvers are accessible from the helm station, located at the center of the boat. With a perfect view of the four corners of the catamaran and the sails, single-handed maneuvering is child’s play! After hoisting the mainsail on your own, using the electric winch in front of you, trimming and fine-tuning your sails with the mainsail and solent sheets, take the tiller, comfortably installed in the ergonomic seat, to enjoy unique steering pleasure. Returning to port, the engine controls and windlass are also within easy reach, guaranteeing seemless maneuvering.
The 360° view from the saloon and cockpit of this blue water catamaran provides exceptional visibility of the water and the surrounding environment, contributing greatly to onboard comfort. Aboard the Outremer 45, whether sitting or standing, inside or outside, the vision is perfect. A crucial factor for serene cruising! No need to climb on deck to scan the horizon, night watches will never have seemed as comfortable as at the chart table!
The very low boom allows easy access to the mainsail, lowers the sail’s center of effort and optimizes performance and comfort at sea. Access to the coachroof is made simple with just one step near the mast, and even the youngest can take part in maneuvers under the watchful eye of the skipper. When it’s time to reef or stow the sail, no acrobatics are required, and you stay safe. All these well-thought elements make the Outremer 45 the ideal catamaran for either beginners or a single-person crew.
This Australian couple, initially with little sailing experience, have been documenting their journey around the world under sail since 2014. If you don’t already know them, it’s time to discover these celebrities that we love to follow…

Sabre 48 Salon Express: An Ideal Combination of Evolution and Revolution.
The 48 Salon Express has a traditional exterior profile that belies her contemporary performance. She cruises at 27 knots and, and at wide open throttle, she’ll attain more than 32 knots. Pod drives and joystick controls give every owner-operator the confidence to dock her in the most difficult of circumstances, and remarkably low sound levels while underway allow for a more pleasant experience while cruising.
Featuring a standard configuration of two cabins and two heads, the 48 Salon Express is supplemented by a utility space forward of the engine room that can be laid out as additional crew quarters. Designed with our customers in mind, her galley-down layout doesn’t compromise on space and light, making food and drink preparation a pure pleasure. Unique to the Sabre 48 design, her master berth and en-suite head have an athwartships orientation, allowing for flat cabin sole on all side of the spacious island queen.

Most boaters start their journey with owner-operator-size boats, but as their enthusiasm for the pastime grows as well as their voyaging aspirations, so does the length of the boat. There comes a point where some boaters will choose to leave the helm chair and enter the crewed-yacht arena. If you’re a boater considering that move, here are 10 ready-to-roam yachts looking for new owners and new adventures.
MarineMax has Almost Done , an Ocean Alexander 27R, listed at $7.99 million. The low-hour 2022 build will make a lasting impression with its beach club, whirlpool spa and five-stateroom layout which has an on-deck master stateroom and three VIP staterooms in total.
The “R in this series from Ocean Alexander, stands for Revolution,” Yachting previously reported . “It’s an apt description because the series, which also includes the 88-foot 27R and 97-foot 30R, is different from anything else Ocean Alexander has built in its 40-plus years in business. Starting with the styling, which is decidedly modern and edgy, there’s a deliberate break from the builder’s more traditional look. It’s all the more notable that the appearances of both the traditional cruisers and the Revolution series come from yacht designer Evan K. Marshall.”
The Sanlorenzo SL96A Gatsby is currently listed with Allied Marine for $9.25 million.
“The ‘A’ in SL96A stands for asymmetric and Sanlorenzo achieves this unique design by, Conserving only the gangway on the starboard side and eliminating the one on the port side, which shifts to the roof of the superstructure,” says Sanlorenzo . “The asymmetrical configuration, seen on SL102A first, frees up about 10 square meters of space for internal use. With respect to a traditional layout, this arrangement offers more space, improving luminosity and flexibility.”
Furniture placement in the salon helps to define the yacht’s social spaces. A six-person L-shaped settee and ottoman are immediately to starboard with only a cabinet separating the settee from the sliding glass doors leading to the cockpit. A formal dining space for eight guests is adjacent to the salon’s settee, a feat only achieved because of the extra space afforded by the asymmetrical design. A flat-screen TV is mounted forward against the bulkhead separating the salon from the galley forward and to starboard, and the on-deck master suite forward and to port. A day head is just forward of the bulkhead and to port.”
Gilman Yachts has Obsession , a Viking Yachts 93 Motor Yacht, listed and an asking $7.4 million. The 2018 enclosed-flybridge motor yacht has charter potential with its five-stateroom layout, two crew cabins and a sub six-foot draft.
Yachting ‘s initial review of the Viking 93 Motor Yacht reported how the New Jersey boatbuilder’s flagship model was based on its 75 Motor Yacht’s design, but also drew inspiration from a Viking owner’s Westport 112 .
“One Viking owner also has a Westport, and Viking’s designers and top brass spent a good amount of time on board that yacht learning how to nail down the needs of owners in that size range. What Viking developed from that experience is a boat built for socializing, one that lets hands-on owners feel at home while enjoying mega-yacht features.”
The Hatteras Yachts M90 Panacea called Jetstream is listed with Atlantic Yacht & Ship for $10.3 million. The 2019 build has an options list that totals more than $2 million. The motoryacht has a four-stateroom, five-head layout that sleeps 10.
This yacht can go the distance or go quickly. Captain’s choice. Twin 1,900 hp Caterpillar C-32A diesels provide power on Jetstream , giving it a reported 24.7-knot top speed and a 22-knot cruise speed. The engines have just 500 hours on them. Jetstream also has a Bahamas-friendly 5-foot-7-inch draft.
This Hatteras M90 Panacea has the performance, but it also has luxury cruising comfort. The salon feels thoroughly modern, thanks in part to the white-oak sole and light-tone furnishings. Frameless house-spanning windows and indirect lighting adds a sense of elegance and enhances the salon’s open feeling.
Alexander Marine has Lanikai , an Ocean Alexander 100 Skylounge , listed for sale with an asking price of $9.8 million. The 2019 motoryacht has a five-stateroom layout, a crew quarters and engines with very low hours. Let’s take a closer look.
When Yachting first reported on the 100 Skylounge we noted at the time that “Ocean Alexander already offers a 90-footer with a four-stateroom layout whose guest spaces would qualify as VIP suites on most yachts. With its OA 100 Skylounge, the builder has added an on-deck master, much like the kind aboard superyachts. That’s one reason why Ocean Alexander calls the 100 Skylounge the entry-level yacht in its six-model mega-yacht series, which stretches up to 155 feet length overall.”
Atlantic Yacht and Ship Inc. currently has Done Deal , a 2014 Hatteras 80 Motor Yacht , listed for sale with an asking price of $4.1 million. The 80-footer has a four-stateroom, five-head layout with accommodations for eight, and two crew cabins that sleep four.
The four staterooms include a full-beam master stateroom amidships with a centerline king berth and an en suite head. The forepeak VIP stateroom has a centerline queen berth and an en suite head. The portside VIP stateroom also has a queen berth and en suite head. The final guest stateroom is to starboard and has two single berths with an en suite head.
Rhapsody, a 2009 Paragon 94, underwent an extensive refit by Lyman Morse in 2018. The 94-foot motoryacht is currently listed for $2.975 million with Worth Avenue Yachts, which represents a $750,000-plus price reduction.
The refit included servicing all equipment and systems, updating soft goods, adding a dining area, transforming the flybridge into an enclosed skylounge and repainting the upper deck space.
Twin 1,550 hp Caterpillar C-32 diesel engines work with the yacht’s planing hull form (with 13.5-degree transom deadrise) to help propel this 100-ton motoryacht to a 20-knot top hop and a 14-knot cruise speed. The engines have just over 2,000 hours on them.
The 2007 Hargrave 82 Open Bridge motoryacht Roxy Maria could be a solid fit for an experienced owner-operator or for owners traveling with a small crew, according to Hargrave Custom Yachts, who built the motoryacht and is selling it for its current owners. The yacht is listed for $1.995 million.
When it comes to boat handling with or without crew, this Hargrave has upper and lower helm stations, bow and stern thrusters and two cockpit docking stations. There are also full walkaround decks and side-deck access from the lower helm station.
With regards to the interior layout, this yacht’s salon has three lounge chairs positioned around the room with a four-person sofa to port. The sole-to-ceiling, high -gloss cherry wood creates a comfortable, warm and inviting entertainment space. This interior design is from Yacht Interiors by Shelley.
The Ocean Alexander 84R Skylounge Panacea is currently listed with Gilman Yachts for $6.65 million. The 2020 motor yacht has accommodations to sleep eight guests in its four-stateroom, five-head layout.
Yachting has previously reported that “the 84R is built via resin infusion with structural foam, fiberglass and carbon fiber, for strength at sea. Carbon fiber is applied to high-stress areas and used in construction of the sky lounge. Aluminum beams in the bulkheads and ceiling further strengthen the yacht.”
Worth Avenue Yachts currently has the 85-foot Burger, Checkers , listed for sale with an asking price of $2.9 million. The 2001 build underwent an interior refit in 2023, including an updated Furuno glass-bridge navigation suite. The yacht has a three-stateroom, four-head layout, and has a main-deck day head.
Checkers can sleep six in its three staterooms, which includes a full-beam owners’ stateroom with an en suite head amidships. The owners’ stateroom features a king berth on centerline, a flat-screen TV at the foot of the bed, his-and-hers vanities, and walk-in closets aft to port and starboard.
Forward, the two guest staterooms as well as the captain’s cabin are accessible from the pilothouse stairway. The forwardmost stateroom has a centerline queen berth and en suite head. The starboard VIP stateroom also has a queen berth and en suite head. The captain’s cabin has upper and lower single berths and an en suite head.

Whether you're a seasoned sailor or just starting your nautical adventures, knowing about boat fenders is critical for protecting your vessel from damage. Today, we're diving deep into the world of boat fenders, exploring the various types, sizes, and crucial insights on when to use them effectively.
Read on and explore!
Boat fenders, also known as marine fenders or bumpers, are essential accessories designed to protect a boat's hull from damage when docking alongside piers, wharves, and other boats. They act as a cushion that absorbs shock and prevents scratches, dents, or structural damage.
Typically hung or attached to the side of the boat, boat fenders play an essential role in maintaining the integrity and appearance of a boat's exterior. This helps extend its lifespan and preserve its value. Utilizing boat fenders properly is a basic yet vital aspect of effective boat maintenance and safety practices.
Think about approaching a dock without any protection on the side of your boat. The hard surface of the dock could easily scratch or dent your boat's exterior, potentially leading to expensive repairs. Boat fenders are your first line of defense against such incidents, preserving both the beauty and integrity of your vessel.
Boat fenders are a crucial investment for any boat owner. Whether you have a small fishing boat or a large yacht, boat fenders play a vital role in protecting your vessel from damage while docking or mooring alongside other boats. They act as a buffer, absorbing impacts and preventing scratches, dents, or more severe structural damage to the boat's hull.
Without fenders, your boat is susceptible to costly repairs and diminished value over time. Therefore, having a set of durable boat fenders can save you money and keep your boat in top condition, ensuring it remains secure and well-maintained in various marine environments.
Kemimoto's innovative EVA boat fender boasts a clever and handy locking mechanism that ensures it stays securely in place, preventing drift. This flat fender is exceptionally resilient and flexible, offering excellent shock absorption. Additionally, it’s lightweight and easy to handle, making it an ideal choice for any boater.
Our latest EVA fender is built to endure extreme cold, handling temperatures as low as -70°C without any problems. It’s also resistant to chemicals, corrosion, and bacteria while being eco-friendly. Disposal is planet-safe. We're serious about innovation and setting new industry standards. Feel at ease with Kemimoto’s complete boat gear collection !
Boat fenders are made from tough materials that can really take a hit and last a long time. They're designed to soak up the bumps and knocks effectively when docking. Typically, you'll find boat fenders made out of sturdy materials like:
1. Vinyl : Vinyl is popular due to its UV resistance and ease of cleaning. Vinyl boat fenders are versatile, available in many colors, and hold up well under sun exposure. However, they can become stiff in cold weather and are more susceptible to punctures compared to rubber.
2. Foam : Foam is extremely lightweight and often inflatable but may lack long-term durability and UV resistance. Foam fenders are easy to move and adjust. However, they are less durable and can absorb water if punctured, which affects their buoyancy and effectiveness.
3. EVA : EVA boat fenders are a kind of foam fender that is awesome for its toughness and lightweight feel. They’re super durable, resist UV damage and cracking well, and don’t deflate. Whether you have bass boats, sailing dinghies, yachts, etc., EVA boat fenders are perfect if you're looking for reliable protection with minimal maintenance!
4. PVC : PVC boat fenders are durable and affordable. They're lightweight, easy to clean, and available in various sizes and colors. However, PVC may be less flexible in cold weather and can be prone to punctures. Additionally, they might degrade under prolonged UV exposure. Overall, PVC fenders offer cost-effective protection ideal for casual boaters.
5. Rubber : Known for durability, rubber fenders offer excellent shock absorption and resilience. However, rubber fenders can be heavy and bulkier than other types, making them difficult to handle and store.
There are different types of fenders for ships, including round, cylindrical, flat, hybrid designs, etc. Each design serves different dock configurations and hull types.
The most common type, cylindrical fenders, are versatile and straightforward in design. They can be hung vertically or horizontally, depending on your docking situation. These are suitable for most leisure boats and come in various sizes.
Round fenders, or ball fenders, are perfect for boats that roll heavily at the dock or are exposed to significant waves. Their spherical shape provides all-around protection, making them ideal for larger vessels such as cruisers.
Commonly used for large ships and in commercial applications, these are air-filled for high energy absorption and low reaction force.
Highly efficient and very durable, cell fenders offer great energy absorption capability. They have a cylindrical shape and are commonly used in oil and LNG facilities with large vessel sizes.
Offering one of the highest energy absorption capacities among fenders, cone fenders are highly efficient. Their conical shape allows them to deflect more than other types while maintaining high energy absorption. They're suitable for both large and small vessels.
Flat fenders are relatively newer in the market and are appreciated for their versatility and ease of storage. Flat fenders can be deflated when not in use, making them perfect for small boats with limited storage space.
Designed specifically for the bow and stern, these fenders cater to the unique needs of these areas of a boat. They are particularly useful for boats with sharp bows.
Designed for the stern area, this help protect your boat’s transom when reversing into a dock.
Perfect for protecting the vulnerable corners on marinas or docks.
Known for their simplicity and durability, arch fenders are widely used due to their ability to withstand heavy use. They feature a curved surface and are often employed in places with stringent space restrictions.
This category includes fenders designed for specific purposes, such as pontoon fenders, which protect the delicate aluminum rails and pontoons on pontoon boats, or transom fenders, tailored to guard the transom area of ski and bass boats.
Too large boat fenders are harder to store and manage, especially on smaller vessels, and can impede the docking process by preventing the boat from getting close enough to the dock. Too small, and the fender won't provide adequate protection.
Here's a simple guideline for selecting the right size:
Boat Length : Generally, you should have one inch of fender diameter for every four to five feet of boat length. For instance, a 20-foot boat would require cylindrical fenders that are 4-5 inches in diameter.
Hanging Height : Fenders should hang just above the waterline but not so low that they drag underwater.
The number of boat fenders you need depends on the length of your boat, the conditions you typically dock in, and how well you want your vessel to be protected.
As a general rule, consider having at least one fender for every 10 feet of boat length. For example, a 20-foot boat should have at least two fenders, whereas a 40-foot boat would benefit from four. However, if you often dock in crowded marinas or in conditions with strong currents or winds, consider using additional fenders to enhance protection。
Here’s a useful boat fender size chart based on the general guidelines to help you determine the right size fenders and how many fenders you should have.
Consider the docking conditions and adjust your fender types, numbers, and placement accordingly for optimal safety and protection.
Knowing when to deploy your fenders is as important as having the right ones. Below are scenarios that highlight proper fender usage:
Docking. Knowing when to deploy your fenders is as important as having the right ones. Below are scenarios that highlight proper fender usage:
Tying Alongside Another Boat . When mooring next to another boat, ensure that your fenders are placed at points of contact. This is often at varying heights, depending on the hull design and water conditions.
Mooring Against High Walls or Piles . Attach fenders whenever you moor your boat, particularly in crowded marinas where waves and movement from other boats can cause collisions.
Choppy Condition s. In rough waters, where your boat is likely to sway and bump more aggressively against docks or other boats, having fenders mounted can prevent significant damage.
During Storage. If you’re storing your boat in the water at a slip or berth, keep fenders on to protect against any unexpected knocks or bumps, especially in high-traffic areas.
Here's how to use them effectively:
1. Select the Right Size and Type . Ensure you choose the appropriate fender types and sizes as discussed in the earlier section.
2. Positioning Fenders : Attach the fenders at the widest point of the hull and adjust them so that they hang just above the waterline. Space them evenly along the side of the boat that will come into contact with the dock or another boat.
3. Attaching Fenders : Use ropes, straps, or fender lines to secure the fenders to your boat. Tie the lines to sturdy fixtures like cleats or rails. Ensure the knots are tight and secure.
4. Adjusting Height : Adjust the height of the fenders based on tidal changes and the type of dock (floating or fixed). They should be positioned high enough to protect against the dock yet low enough not to cover any openings or interfere with docking.
5. Use Additional Protection : In windy conditions or rough waters, consider using extra fenders or specialized types like pontoon fenders for added security.
6. Regular Inspection and Adjustment : Regularly check the fenders during docking or when moored for extended periods. Adjust them as needed to ensure they provide maximum protection.
Follow these tips to maximize the life and effectiveness of your boat fenders:
Proper Inflation : Over-inflated fenders are less effective at absorbing impacts and more likely to burst. Under-inflated fenders, meanwhile, fail to provide adequate protection. However, if you use EVA boat fenders, there’s no need to inflate or deflate as it can effectively absorb impacts and protect your boat.
Regular Cleaning : Keep fenders clean to avoid transferring dirt or debris onto your boat’s finish. Wash them regularly with soap and water.
Inspection and Replacement : Check fenders periodically for wear and tear. If a fender becomes severely damaged, replace it immediately to ensure continuous protection.
Correct Storage : When not in use, store fenders in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight to prevent degradation.
In conclusion, understanding the different types, sizes, and proper usage of boat fenders is essential for every boat owner. Investing in high-quality fenders from trusted brands like Kemimoto ensures your vessel remains protected from costly damages while docking or mooring.
Remember to select the right size and type for your boat, position them correctly, and maintain them through regular cleaning and inspection. Whether you're navigating choppy waters or enjoying a calm marina, well-placed boat fenders will safeguard your boat's integrity and appearance.
Protect your investment and enjoy peace of mind on every voyage with the right boat fenders. For more expert advice and top-notch and easy-to-use boat gear, visit Kemimoto's comprehensive collection today. Happy sailing!
Though often used interchangeably, Bumper and Fender have distinct meanings. Boat Bumpers are installed on the dock, while Boat Fenders are attached directly to the boat.
First, consider your boat's length and weight. Generally, fenders should be 1 inch in diameter for every 4-5 feet of boat length. Then, measure the height to ensure it properly covers the boat’s hull side. Don't forget to account for docking conditions too!
For a 34-foot boat, you'll typically need fenders that are at least 8.5 inches in diameter and around 26 inches long to ensure proper protection while docking.
For a 23-foot boat, you’ll generally need three to four fenders. For a 20-foot boat, you typically need at least three fenders.
The best placement for boat fenders is along the widest part of your boat, ensuring they’re evenly spaced. Position fenders just above the waterline to protect against dock and boat contact, including at the bow and stern for optimal protection while docking. Adjust their height as needed based on dock conditions.
To tie bumpers to a boat cleat, use a simple clove hitch knot. Loop the fender line around the cleat twice, crossing over in an "X" shape. Ensure it's snug and secure. Adjust the fender's height as needed to provide optimal protection while docking or rafting.
Use strong ropes or fender lines to attach boat fenders to the dock. Securely tie the fenders to dock cleats or pilings at water level height. Ensure they’re evenly spaced and adjust their positions to shield your boat from contact with the dock, providing optimal protection while mooring.
