Electric boats are here and they are quietly turning heads all over the world, we pick out 37 of the most exciting all-electric projects being built right now...

Electric boats are here to stay. What started as a trickle of electric craft over the past few years has turned into a torrent with everyone from Riva to Axopar jumping on the bandwagon.

Hybrid diesel electric boats are by no means a new concept in the marine world, but the latest generation of electric boats, not to mention electric outboard motors , is proving that this technology is no longer something to look forward to in the future, electric boats are a viable option right now.

Here at MBY.com, we’ve been following the electric boats revolution with intent for over a decade and now there are enough models on the market to make this style of boat a true competitor to conventional diesel and petrol-powered boats.

With a network of fast electric boat chargers already in place along the French Riviera, and plans for many more in marinas all over Europe and the UK, it looks like the electric revolution is now fully under way.

Read on for our round-up of the best electric boats currently in build…

Near silent cruising at 5-7 knots is the electric Alfastreet’s forte

Alfastreet 28 Cabin

These Slovenian-built boats are now a common sight on the Thames where their elegant lines, large sociable cockpits and clever lifting hard tops make them ideally suited to lazy days afloat.

Although most of them are available with powerful petrol outboard or sterndrive engines for fast coastal passages, Alfastreet also offers factory-fit electric boat versions of all its models for inland use.

Designed for slow speed displacement cruising , these are built for slipping along silently at 5-6 knots with zero emissions rather than rushing about at speed.

The top-of-the-range Alfastreet 28 Cabin, for example, is powered by twin 10kW motors for a top speed of around 7.5 knots and an estimated cruising range of 50nm at 5 knots from its twin 25kWh batteries.

Electric boats: When will the boating world be ready to ditch the diesel?

Volvo penta d4 hybrid first look: is this the future of boat propulsion.

Ski boats are all about instant-on torque to punch you out of the hole and leap on the plane. New California start-up Arc Boat Company is ensuring its upcoming Arc One ski boat will do just that, courtesy of its honking 350kW electric motor.

In case you’re wondering, that’s the equivalent of 475hp. Or around twice the juice on tap in the highest-capacity Tesla Model S. It also means a top speed of 40mph, and enough amps to keep you skiing or wake-boarding for up to five hours.

The aluminium-hulled 24-footer, with seats for 10, is the first offering from Los Angeles-based Arc, which is being headed-up by Tesla’s former head of manufacturing. He’s expecting the first electric boats to be delivered, with custom trailer included, this summer.

The Boesch 750 offers all the style, heritage and performance you could wish for, and an electric motor

Boesch 750 Portofino Deluxe

This exclusive Swiss yard has been in business since 1910 building elegant retro sportsboats for lake and sea use.

Unlike Riva , it still builds exclusively in wood using a lightweight mahogany laminate construction that it claims is as strong and easy to maintain as a modern GRP hull.

All its craft use a traditional mid-mounted engine with a straight shaft propeller and rudder steering for maximum reliability and a flat trim angle, making them well suited for use as ski boats.

The current range comprises six models from 20ft to 32ft, however only the models up to 25ft are available as electric boats.

The top-of-the-range electric model, the Boesch 750 Portofino Deluxe, has twin 50kW Piktronik motors giving a top speed of 21 knots and a range of 14nm.

candela-c-8-electric-boats

The Candela C-8 recently set a world record for electric boat endurance by covering 420nm in 24hrs

Candela C-8

With a claimed range of 50nm at 22 knots, overnight accommodation for two and a more robust deep vee foiling hull , this new Candela C-8 could be the electric boats game-changer we were waiting for.

Whereas the Candela C-7 looked oddly dated for such a high-tech boat, the C-8 has a purity of line to it that is fresh, modern and distinctive. With its vertical bow, slender beam and subtly contoured topsides free of scoops, slats or unnecessary styling lines, it has a pared back simplicity to it that oozes confidence.

It doesn’t need to shout for attention because every pair of eyes will be glued to it the minute it rises onto its foils and flies silently past the assembled onlookers, leaving nothing but a lingering aura of astonishment hanging in the air.

New for 2023, the C-8 will now be available with an uprated 69kWh Polestar 2 Standard battery pack, which considerably improves the range (as the Candela C-8’s recent world record attempt proved), and with the option of a center console deck layout.

Candela C-8 specifications

LOA: 27ft 11in (8.50m) Motor: 45-55kW Candela C-Pod Battery: 44-69kWh Top speed: 24 knots Range: 51nm Price: €290,000 (ex. VAT)

Duffy Sun Cruiser 22

You can’t talk about electric boats and not talk about Duffy. Since 1970, more than 14,000 of these surrey-topped, genteel bay and lake cruisers have been sold. In Duffy’s home port of Newport Beach, California, there’s an estimated 3,500 of them running around. It’s simply the world’s best-selling electric boat.

Beautifully-built, with cushy seats for 12, a built-in fridge, and a multitude of cupholders, the top-selling Duffy 22 makes the perfect cocktail-hour cruiser.

Don’t expect to get anywhere in a hurry. Top speed is a heady 5.5 knots courtesy of a 48-volt electric motor amped by a bank of 16 six-volt batteries.

One especially cool feature is Duffy’s patented Power Rudder set-up. This integrates the electric motor with the rudder and the four-bladed prop, allowing the whole assembly to rotate almost 90 degrees for easier docking.

best-electric-boats-frauscher-740-mirage

Frauscher 740 Mirage

The tag line for this Austrian yard is ‘Engineers of Emotion since 1927’, and given the effect its boats tend to have on casual observers, let alone the person sitting behind the helm, we’re inclined to agree.

Simply put, it builds some of the best looking boats on the market, combining rakish proportions with cutting-edge style and exquisite detailing.

Although it builds petrol-powered boats up to 39ft offering searing performance, it also offers most of its smaller craft with the option of silent, emissions-free electric power.

The Frauscher 740 Mirage is a perfect example of this, offering two different electric Torqeedo motors of either 60kW or 110kW. The more powerful of these delivers a top speed of 26 knots and a range of 17-60nm depending on how fast you go.

As if that wasn’t exciting enough, Frauscher have also teamed up with Porsche for an all-electric version of their 8.5m Fantom model, which is due to launch in 2024 as part of a limit edition 25-boat series.

Frauscher 740 Mirage specification

LOA: 24ft 6in (7.47m) Motor: 1 x 60-110kW Battery: 40-80kWh Top speed: 26 knots Range: 17-60nm @ 26-5 knots Starting price: €216,616 (ex. VAT)

Greenline 40

Slovenian-based Greenline Yachts can lay claim to kickstarting the current trend for electric boats. Way back in 2008 it launched the first affordable diesel electric hybrid boat, a formula it has been refining and improving ever since.

Greenline now offers an extensive range of cruisers from 33ft to 68ft, all of which are available with all-electric as well as hybrid or conventional diesel power.

The mid-range Greenline 40 is a fine example; the all-electric version is powered by twin 50kW motors giving it a top speed of 11 knots and a range of up to 30nm at 7 knots with a small 4kW range extender increasing that to 75nm at 5 knots.

However, if you need more flexibility the Hybrid model is fitted with twin 220hp Volvo D3 diesel engines boosting the speed to 22 knots but still allowing electric-only cruising at 5 knots for up to 20nm.

Greenline 40 specification

LOA: 39ft 4in (11.99m) Motor: 2 x 50kW Battery: 2 x 40kWh Top speed: 11 knots Range: 30nm @ 7 knots Price: €445,000 (ex. VAT)

Hermes Speedster E

Inspired by the curvy lines of Porsche’s classic 1950s 356 Speedster, this achingly-gorgeous Hermes Speedster from UK-based Seven Seas Yachts, has been spinning heads since 2017.

The rakish, Greek-built 22-footer typically comes with a 115hp Rotax Biggles-style motor doing the powering. But more recently it’s been offered with an eco-friendly, 100kW electric motor juiced by a 30 kilowatt-hour battery pack.

Flat out it’ll do just over 30 knots. But throttle back to a more leisurely five knots and it’ll glide in stealthy silence for up to nine hours on a charge. Perfect for a trip up the Thames.

And for lovers of retro, it boasts a curvy chrome-framed windscreen, chrome-ringed gauges in a hand-stitched leather dash, bucket front seats in glove-soft marine leather, and chrome air intakes on the rear deck. A nautical piece of art? You bet.

Hermes Speedster E specifications

LOA: 22ft (6.7m) Motor: 100kW Battery: 1 x 35kWh Top speed: 30 knots Range: 50nm at 5 knots Price: $269,000 / £203,000

Hinckley Dasher

Mention the name Hinckley and you immediately conjure-up an image of gorgeous teak-and-stainless, water-jet-thrusted Picnic Boats. But the legendary New England builder has been looking to the future and investing big in electric power.

Its first offering is the sleek 28-foot, all-electric Dasher that comes complete with a BMW-developed lithium-ion battery pack and twin 80hp Torqeedo Deep Blue motors. The high-tech combo can punch the Dasher to a top speed of 23.5 knots. Ease back to seven knots and it’ll run for over five hours on a charge.

Available as an open-deck, fishing-focused runabout, or classic-style windshielded day boat, the Dasher is a hand-built Hinckley bow to stern.

That said, while the boat still looks like it oozes with mirror-varnished teak and stainless fittings, the teak is actually hand-painted composite, the stainless is 3D-printed titanium. That flag-blue hull? Made of carbon-epoxy composites with carbon stringers.

Hinckley Dasher specifications

LOA: 28ft 6in (6.7m) Motor: 2 x 50kW Battery: 40kWh Top speed: 23.5 knots Range: 40 miles at 20 knots Starting price: $545,000 / £412,000

The compact Magonis E-550 is a refreshinghly affordable electric option

Magonis Wave e-550

Spanish newcomer Magonis may not be the prettiest electric boat on the market but it is certainly one of the most affordable, with prices starting from as little €33,485 inc VAT.

Admittedly that only buys you the least powerful displacement-only 4kW version but even the most powerful 30kW model starts at a relatively modest €68,960 and boasts a top speed of 22 knots.

The key to its performance is a lightweight resin-infused hull that weighs just 335kg, which is powered by off-the-shelf electric outboards from Torqeedo and Mag Power.

Despite its diminutive proportions the squared-off bow means it is Category C rated for up to six people. Battery sizes vary from 10kWh to 23kWh according to engine power, giving a range of up to 60nm at 5 knots.

Magonis Wave e-550 specifications

LOA: 18ft 0in (5.50m) Motor: 1 x 4 – 30kW Battery: 1 x 10 – 23kWh Top speed: 22 knots Range: 30nm @ 3 knots Starting price: €33,485

mantaray-m24-electric-boats

Mantaray M24

What makes this 24ft Mannerfelt-designed runabout particularly interesting is its simplicity. Unlike its main foiling rival, the Candela C-7, the Mantaray M24 requires no complicated electronics to ‘fly’.

Instead it uses the builder’s patented mechanical hydrofoil system, which it has trademarked as Dynamic Wing Technology or DWT.

The technology is said to be the result of ten years’ development work and uses a retractable T-foil in the bow and H-foil amidships that self-stabilise mechanically.

The Marian M800 doesn’t make any compromises on style or speed

Marian M800 Spyder

This Austrian yard only manufactures all-electric boats so they can be designed from the ground up to suit the packaging requirements of the battery and motor rather than having to accommodate big petrol or diesel engines too.

The result is a supremely elegant range of retro-inspired sportsboats from 19ft to 26ft, as well as a more prosaic lake cruiser. The latest M800 Spider, launched at the 2021 Cannes Yachting Festival , is its prettiest boat yet, rivalling the Riva Iseo for sheer style.

With each boat being built to order, you can specify anything from a 10kW electric motor and affordable 200Ah AGM batteries for lake use up to a 150kW motor and 125kWh lithium ion batteries for a top speed 34 knots (waterskiing is also possible) and a range of 30nm at 16 knots.

Styling is a bold mix of retro design cues and futuristic detailing

Mayla FortyFour

German start-up Mayla Yachts is close to launching the first of its outrageous all-electric performance boats, called the Mayla FortyFour. Based on a Petestep deep-vee hull platform, this ultralight carbon fibre electric boat promises top speeds of over 70 knots.

Twin 800kW dual-core electric motors deliver up to 2,150hp of power to tunnel-mounted surface drives and thanks to the 4,800Nm of torque on tap, the second you apply the throttles, acceleration should be fearsome.

Power comes from either an all-electric 500kWh lithium-ion battery or a smaller 400kWh battery backed up by a 400hp (300kW) diesel generator and fuel tank. This hybrid boat version should give a maximum range of 270nm at 30 knots.

Mayla FortyFour specifications

LOA: 44ft (13.4 m) Beam: 10ft (3.0 m) Displacement: 6,200kgs Water capacity: 200L Power: Twin 400-800kW Battery: 400-500 kWh Li-ion Top speed: 70 knots Cruising range: 70nm (electric) / 270nm (hybrid) Price: TBC

Anyone who has watched America’s Cup boats in action will know foiling does wonders for performance, which is the thinking at Silicon Valley-based and Sergey Brin-backed Navier, which is currently developing one very cool, and very clever, hydro-foiling electric dayboat, the Navier N30.

With its retractable foils and twin 90kW electric motors connected to a 80kWh battery bank, the carbon-hulled Navier can soar four feet above the waves at over 30 knots. Throttle back to 20 and the projected range is over 75 nautical miles, which Navier claims makes this the rangiest 30ft electric boat in the world.

You cake your pick from a Cabin version or open Hardtop, both of which come with a nifty self-docking feature (demonstrated in the video above). Navier says that the 2023 production run has sold out and it is already taking deposits on 2024 boats.

Navier N30 specifications

LOA: 30ft (9.1m) Beam: 8ft 6in (2.6m) Motor: 2 x 90kW Battery: 80kWh Top speed: 35 knots Range: 75 miles at 20 knots Starting price: From $300,000 / £226,000

nero-777-electric-boats

Nero 777 Evolution

Designed in Italy and built in Germany, the new Nero 777 looks like a very appealing combination of style and engineering know-how. Due to launch in 2024, it will come with a choice of five Evoy propulsion systems ranging from 60kW all the way up to 300kW.

The latter will offer an impressive top speed in excess of 50 knots, making this one of the fastest electric boats in development. And with a Petestep hull, it should offer a very comfortable ride even at such rapid speeds. Bring the speed back to a leisurely 5 knots and the claimed range shoots up to an impressive 108nm.

Design-wise, the Neto 777 Evolution taps into the current trend for fold-down balconies, which can create a water-level beach club effect – no mean feat on such a compact boat.

electric-boats-MBY279.news.1_Riva_EL_ISEO_1

Only Riva could produce an electric boat that looks as pretty as this

Riva El-Iseo

As its name suggests the El-Iseo is an all-electric version of Riva’s entry-level sportsboat, the gloriously retro 27 Iseo.

The heart of the El-Iseo is a 250kW Parker GVM310 electric motor that spins a Mercury Bravo Three XR sterndrive leg. The prototype is capable of 40 knots, much the same as it delivers with its usual 300hp petrol or diesel engine options.

However, those who have driven the electric version say it’s the acceleration that really stands out. The quoted range figures are one hour at 25 knots or 10 hours at five knots, meaning a range of 25nm at planing speeds or 50nm in displacement mode.

Ferretti Group CEO Alberto Galassi says that they will not start selling the El-Iseo or commit to a price until they have thoroughly tested the prototype and are certain it will deliver the performance, safety and reliability expected of a Riva.

The production model will be packaged with the latest electronics including a smart management system that reduces speed when the battery runs low and collision-avoidance software. “If it is going to be a Riva, it has to be perfect,” said Galassi.

SAY Carbon Yachts 29 E

As the name suggests, this German yard is renowned for its ultra light, high performance carbon fibre craft and it’s these same properties that make the SAY Carbon Yachts 29 E such a compelling electric craft.

This slender, low draught speed machine weighs less than two tonnes all up, including a powerful 360kW Kreisel electric motor and 120kWh battery. Hardly surprising then that it also holds the record for the world’s fastest production electric boat (under 9m) after scorching to a top speed of 50 knots on an Austrian lake in 2018.

Use the power more sparingly and the yard claims a range of 25nm at 22 knots, while a built in 22kW charger delivers a full recharge in just six hours.

SpiritBARTech35EF

A marriage of gloriously retro styling and cutting-edge foiling technology, this electric foiler was commissioned as a chase-boat toy by the same European owner that took delivery in early 2020 of Spirit Yachts ’ largest and most technologically advanced project to date, the 111ft super-sloop Geist .

She was drawn by Spirit Yachts’ CEO and chief designer Sean McMillan, who admits to taking his principal inspiration from a slightly smaller twice Gold Cup winning hydroplane of mid-1920s America called Baby Bootlegger , which sported a similar near-plumb bow, long varnished foredeck and a two-seat cockpit.

The vessel encompasses a modified electric motor, developed for motorsport, and three integrated foils. The claimed top speed is 30 knots, but the usual fast cruise speed will be in the low 20s, at which the quoted range is 100nm.

This was put to the test on July 17, with the SpiritBARTech35EF setting a new electric boat record for fastest circumnavigation of the Isle of Wight, covering 51m in 1hr 56mins at an average speed just shy of 23 knots.

Vita-Lion-review-test-drive-video

Vita isn’t just a boat-building company, it also hopes to sell off-the-shelf electric drivetrains to other yards. Given the impressive performance and range of its own flagship LION model, this could prove a very smart move.

This elegant 10.5m day boat packs roughly the same amount of battery power as four Tesla 3 models and, thanks to a pair of 150kW electric motors linked to a single Mercury Bravo sterndrive, it goes like one too.

In fact Vita has to limit the amount of torque the motors put out to stop it shredding the gears. Despite this it maxes out at around 35 knots and can cruise for 90 minutes at 22 knots or almost 10 hours at 6-7 knots.

Voltari 260

Typically, the brand new Voltari 260 electric boat is all about going fast. With its high-torque 740hp electric motor juiced by a 142kWh bank of lithium-ion Evereadys, it can slice and dice the waves at an impressive 52 knots.

But when there’s a world record to be broken, it’s worth a compromise or two. So, to claim the gong for covering the longest overseas distance in an electric “vehicle” on a single charge, the Voltari streaked along at a heady… 4.3 knots.

That meant covering the 91-miles between Key Largo, Florida, across the often-boisterous Gulf Stream, to Bimini in the Bahamas in what must have seemed an endless 20 hours. But it got the job done, and on a single charge.

x-shore-1-yacht-tour-video

The big claim for the new X Shore 1 is that it’s the first all-electric 30-knot sportsboat to be priced at under €100,000 ex taxes, making it the cheapest electric planing runabout in Europe.

With an LOA of 21ft 4in (6.5m), it is around 5ft shorter than the original X-Shore Eelex 8000 and €150,000 cheaper. It is powered by a 125kW electric motor with a single 63kWh Kreisel battery (the Eelex has a 225kW motor and two 63kWh batteries) but thanks to the 1’s smaller, lighter hull it boasts the same top speed of 30 knots and a similar range of 20nm at 20 knots or 50nm at 6 knots (the Eelex can do 100nm at low speed).

The X-Shore 1 is available either as an open boat with a half height windscreen or a semi-enclosed Top version with the aid of an extended windscreen, a small hard top and canopies protecting the helm. Unlike the walkaround Eelex, it also has an enclosed foredeck with a cuddy underneath for overnighting.

X Shore has also started branching out into the realm of commercial boats. Based on the Eelex 8000 platform, the first X Shore Pro is being used for school transportation in the Swedish archipelago.

ZIN’s waif-like sportsboat has a claimed range of 100nm at 13 knots

Seattle-based start-up Zin Electric Boats claims an astonishing range of up to 100nm for its pretty little Z2R sportsboats. Its secret is a super-lightweight all-carbon fibre hull that allows it to plane efficiently at just 13 knots.

As with many of these boats it is powered by Torqeedo’s 55kW electric motor linked to the same company’s 45kWh battery adapted from the BMW i3 electric car.

The first prototype reached a faintly terrifying 48 knots flat out but the production version is being limited to 30 knots to extend the range. Acceleration should still be lightning quick though thanks to the motor’s impressive torque.

Zodiac 450 e-jet

French RIB specialist Zodiac is developing an entire range of small, affordable electric RIBs in conjunction with Torqeedo, but in the meantime it has already started building a state-of-the-art electric jet-RIB, predominantly for use as a superyacht tender.

Powered by a 50kW Torqeedo Deep Blue motor with a 40kWh battery from the BMW i3 car driving a low drag water jet, it can reach a max speed of 30 knots.

It also boasts a useful 90 minutes of cruising time at 24 knots, equating to a range of 36nm. High quality Neoprene tubes, retractable seating and hand-sewn quilted seats help justify its price and intended target market.

The new 3.1m and 3.4m eOpen range won’t be quite as quick but will have a range of around 10nm at 12 knots, and with prices from €25,200, they’re more affordable.

Most major boat brands are still building sailboats with dirty but reliable diesel propulsion. Fortunately, however, a growing number of innovative companies are offering fully-electric yachts. These early adopters are pushing some larger manufacturers to offer electric options as well. This new generation of boats with quieter and cleaner propulsion represents the future of sailing.

So what are some of the most exciting electric monohull and multihull sailboats on the market in 2022? We highlight newer green monohulls and multi hulls from Alva , Arcona , Elan , Salona , Sunreef , X-Yachts , Zen Yachts , and more.

Alva Yachts

Alva Yachts is a brand new builder of luxury solar power yachts. The company evolved from Pica Yachts, which built 20-30 foot sailing and electric powerboats from 2013-2019. Launched in 2020, Alva Yachts offers the Ocean series of eco-powered yachts and sailing yachts. The company's eco-powered yachts include fully electric-solar cruisers and catamarans from 50 feet (15.20 meters) to 90 feet (27.5 meters).

Alva Yachts has also designed two electric sailing yachts, the Ocean Sail 72 (22,25 meters) and the mammoth Ocean Sail 82 (25 meters), likely the first fully-electric 80-foot sailing yacht.

Ocean Sail 72

The company's stated goal for the Ocean Sail 72 was to design the best electric performance yacht possible by combining the efficiency of a racing hull with a deck layout that is comfortable and cozy. The futuristic design by Holger Henn / Henn Project , with input from naval architects at the Henn Project and Hamburg's Bad PyrmontI-Yacht, includes integrated solar panels.

Ocean Sail 72 Alva Yachts.

A 135 kW electric motor with 124 kWh battery capacity and a 200 kW DC generator powers the yacht. The boat comes with 4.8kWp photovoltaic capacity with three 230 kVA 230 V shore power hookups. With energy to spare, a 50,000 BTU air conditioner is available for hot summer days and warmer climes.

The sailing gear includes a123 m² self-tacking mainsail, a 121 m² jib, an optional 142 m² genoa, and a 305m² gennaker. The boat is ready for the boldest bluewater adventures, coming with a Europe, CE (Category A) classification. It carries 10,680 kg of ballast, displaces 32,500 kg, with a draft of 3 meters. With a generous beam of 18.7 feet (5.7 meters), the Ocean Sail 72 is spacious. It comes with a 1,000 liter freshwater tank, two 200 liter blackwater tanks, and two 200 liter greywater tanks,

Arcona Yachts

Sweden's Arcona Yachts is one of the world's leading builders of electric yachts. Electric propulsion upgrades are available across the entire Arcona fleet. Arcona Yachts claims to have the largest fleet of electric zero emissions yachts. It was an early adopter of electric propulsion, launching the Arcona 380Z in 2015 (for more see a Cruising World review of the Arcona 380Z ).

The company officially rolled out the new Arcona 415 in 2021. Designed by Stefan Qviberg and the Arcona Design team, the boat comes with electric propulsion as a standard feature. Arcona installs Oceanvolt motors, and the Arcona 415 comes equipped with a powerful 15kW Oceanvolt Servoprop electric propulsion system. A 19kWh battery pack comes standard. The Oceanvolt Sail Drive is able to regenerate power via the propeller once the boat is making sufficient speed.

Arcona 415 Arcona Yachts.

This new model builds on the success of the older Arcona 410. Like the Arcona 410, the 415 comes with an open transom and twin wheels. The hull is made with a 20 mm Divinycell foam core using vacuum infusion technology. The company says it built the 12.20 meter-long boat for strength, speed, responsiveness, and ease of sailing. Bulkheads are bonded to the hull and deck for added strength, and a galvanized steel cradle helps to absorb the dynamic loads of the rig, mast and keel. The boat meets A-Ocean European CE Category. The 415 displaces 7,800 kilograms (17,200 pounds).

The boat comes with a sailing setup built for speed, with a mainsail of 57 m 2 a 107% jib, 148 m 2 spinnaker, and 132 m 2 Gennaker.

The company designed the interior of the Arcona 415 with the option of elegantly handcrafted Mahogany or Scandinavian Light Oak. With a 3.9 meter beam, there is plenty of space. Customers can purchase two- or three-cabin models, and the boat is billed as a quality performance cruiser. A spacious saloon and well-equipped galley round out the interior. This model has a water capacity of 230 liters, 25 liters for hot water, and a 75 liter holding tank.

Elan Yachts

Elan Yachts has a seven decade pedigree of innovation and award-winning boat building. The company builds three boat lines: The E-Line, Impression-Line, and GT Line. SAIL magazine awarded the Elan GT6, a 49 foot luxury performance cruiser sailing yacht, the Best Boats 2022 award .

The new flagship model for the high-performance E-Line range is the E6 . Launched in March of 2022, the 50 foot 2 inch (15.30 meter) (length overall) E6 is the company's largest and fastest performance cruiser. According to the company , the E6 is “…intended to be the fastest, lightest and stiffest 47 ft fitted production performance cruisers on the market.”

Elan E6

Boats in the E Line series are designed in conjunction with Humphreys Yacht Design to be high-performance yachts with ocean cruising capabilities. The boats are built with Vacuum Assisted Infusion Lamination (VAIL) technology to create strong, stable, and safe cruising boats. Like many modern performance cruisers, boats in the E Line series come with chined hulls and twin rudders to deliver control and stability at high heel angles. All models include a carbon fiber retractable bowsprit, tapered keel stepped masts, a genoa furling system, and adjustable split backstays.

The boat comes with 97.7 US gallons (370 liters) of water capacity. While the standard model comes with an available 63.4 US gallon (240 liter) fuel tank capacity and 57 or 80 HP Yanmar engines. However, the E6 is also available with twin 15 kW Oceanvolt SailDrives for sailors trying to reduce their diesel footprint. The E6 comes with three pairs of Harken winches that were reportedly positioned after in-house testing with an Olympic sailing team.

The E6 is just as elegant below as it is sporty above. Designed by Pininfarina, the spacious interior includes natural oak veneered and solid wood finish.

Salona Yachts

Salona Yachts is a relatively small yacht builder, but the company is making heads turn with its award-winning eco-friendly yachts. The Croatian yacht builder, which has been building yachts since 2002, offers performance cruising models ranging from the Salona 33 to the Salona 46. The U.S. dealer for Salona is Green Yacht Sales , itself a leader in promoting the electric yacht revolution.

Salona S46-XLVI

Salona launched the high-tech Salona S46 in October 2021. The S46, designed with J&J Design , evolved from the S44. The company says the solid hull and deck are produced using vacuum infusion and vinyl ester resin. An internal steel frame supports the keel and mast.

The S46 has a large and functional cockpit with halyards and other lines running aft to the cabin roof to make single-handed steering easy. The boat comes with a fractional rig and oversized winches. The main is managed with an electric winch.

A twin  Oceanvolt  electric propulsion system offers speed as well as hydroregeneration while under sail. Green Yacht Sails reported in a test sail that the S46 reached 5 knots of speed in 4.5 knots of wind on a beam reach and over 10 knots in winds in the range of 15-20 knots.

Salona Yachts S46

The boat is as good looking and comfortable as it is well built. The interior has a light “Euro” modern look. The S46 comes with a spacious refrigerator, double sink, three-burner galley, and spacious counter and cabinet.

The boat comes equipped with a 53 gallon water tank, twin Oceanvolt 10 kW Servoprop Electric Motors, and a 30 kW battery bank. The S model is reportedly able to travel approximately 70 miles at a speed of 3 to 3.5 knots (or 6.6 knots for about 15 miles at high speed).

Judges at the 2021 Newport International Boat Show recognized the quality and innovation built into the S46 by awarding the S46 with the Best Green Boat award. According to an article on the 2022 Boat of the Year in Crusing World Magazine one of the judges reported that, “This boat lit up under sail, and was a joy to steer and tweak.” For a complete review of the S46 see this article in Sailing Today with Yachts & Yachting .

Sunreef Yachts

After four decades of innovation, X-Yachts is launching a new electric-powered sailboat model to join the green boating revolution. This new range of boats mirrors the company's recent visible corporate environmental sustainability commitments . For example, In 2021 X-Yachts became the main sponsor of the Race For Oceans Foundation , an organization whose target is to protect the oceans from plastic.

The X4⁹E is the first X-Yacht sailboat the company has built as a hybrid-powered yacht. The company fitted the yacht with two 10 kW electric saildrives from OceanVolt, a 28.8 kWh 48 volt LiFePO4 Lithium battery bank, and an onboard Fischer Panda DC generator with capacity of 11 kW. The company plans a fully electric option for owners who request it.

Two Oceanvolt saildrives have a maximum power of 10kW each. This would enable a theoretical maximum speed of up to 7.8 knots. At this speed the saildrive could repower the battery bank with a regeneration power of up to 3,000 watts.

The generator recharges the 48V lithium battery bank and/or simultaneously provides power to the Oceanvolt saildrives. Recharging from 20% to 80% with the generator is estimated to take around 95 minutes.

OceanVolt and X-Yachts project a range of 12.6 NM at a fast 7.3 knots of speed up to 49 NM at a more leisurely 4 knots of speed estimated under flat water and no wind conditions.

The company reports it expects to launch the first X4⁹E in May 2022.

Zen Yachts is one of the newest and most ambitious eco-yacht builders. The company has a stated mission to strive to accelerate the transition to zero-emission boating, yachting, and even shipping.

Zen Yachts claims the ZEN50 is the world's first series production catamaran equipped with a wingsail. Award-winning naval architect Julien Mélot designed the catamaran.

The ZEN50 (LOA 15.7 meters) sports racing carbon hulls. A huge solar roof enables abundant solar power, with a reported solar power versus displacement ratio of 16 kW to 16 tons. The boats most unique feature is its revolutionary, fully automated, optional wingsail manufactured by Ayro . The OceanWings32 was originally developed for Team Oracle for the 2010 America’s Cup. Zenso claims this boat is the first series production leisure craft equipped with a fully-automated wingsail. A high capacity 160 kWh lithium battery bank powers a powerful electric motor. The ZEN50 reportedly can achieve 14 knots and maintain high continuous speeds.

The ZEN50 comes in three versions: Racer, Cruiser and Explorer models. The company lists the base “Sea Racer” model at US $1.6 million. It lists the “World Cruiser” model at US $2.25 million. Construction of the first units began in March 2022.

ZEN50 electric catamaran Zen Yachts

The interior of the ZEN50 is just as elegant and roomy as the topside is innovative. The boat includes two large day beds, three dining areas for at least ten people, a professional galley, two wet kitchens, five heads, and up to four double ensuite cabins. Additional sleeping areas are available via a bunk double and single.

The ZEN50 also comes with an electric tender, dive compressor, satellite internet, and helm stations in the cockpit and flybridge.

In the next few years we expect that electric yachts will no longer be a niche market. For example, In 2021 Groupe Beneteau announced plans to develop electric options across a number of its brands. This is important because Groupe Beneteau is one of the most important players in the boating industry.

Group Beneteau controls 17 brands and services at 20 different production sites. The company reported revenue of €1.15 billion (US$ 1.25 billion) in 2019-20 across all its brands (including non-boat brands). The boat division at Groupe Beneteau includes 180 recreational boat models across its 12 boat brands. These include Beneteau , the iconic namesake brand, which includes 45 different models; Jeanneau , which itself has a more than 60-year legacy of designing and building powerboats, sailboats, and yachts; Lagoon , a leader in the construction of cruising catamaran sailboats; and Excess  catamarans.

As an example of where Groupe Beneteau may be heading, In 2021 the first hybrid  Excess 15  was introduced at the 2021 Cannes Yachting Festival . The prototype catamaran came equipped with the Deep Blue Hybrid system from Torqeedo .

The Excess 15 is spacious. It is the largest catamaran in the Bénéteau Group family with an area of 125 square meters (1,345 square feet) and a 25-meter (82 foot) high mast. The electric prototype included a bluewater sailing configuration that included twin Deep Blue 50 kW electric saildrives and two Deep Blue high-capacity lithiumion BMW i3 batteries.

The prototype is part of a Groupe Beneteau's reported strategy to incorporate hybrid engine projects across a variety of its brands and boat models. However, as of April 2022 it did not appear that buyers could select the electric power option from the Excess 15 configuration page .

Beneteau 30.1

In 2021 Beneteau also introduced a prototype of its Oceanis 30.1 model sailboat. The Oceanis 30.1 basic model is the smallest yacht in the Beneteau line of cruising boats. Launched in 2019 , the 30.1 won Best Small Cruiser of 2020 from Sail Magazine and Best Performance Cruiser of 2020 from Cruising World Magazine. As of April 2022 it did not appear that Beneteau listed an electric power option for the Oceanis 30.1 on the boat's public specification page . Based on the introduction of an electric prototype, we hope this option will be possible soon for this award-winning small cruiser.

If 2022 is any indication, we are in an exciting era of new electric yachts from innovative small yacht companies like Salona Yachts. More established companies like Elan Yachts and X-Yachts are beginning to offer electric options. Major brands like Beneteau and Excess are teasing electric prototypes. The ever-growing number of innovative multihulls from companies like Zenso and Sunreef offer an even more exciting range of options for the boater trying to sail greener.

5 New Electric Boats for 2022

electric yacht companies

Electric options for boating are beginning to grow exponentially all over the world. Many boat companies and manufacturers are joining in on the importance of electric boating by building fully electric boats and hybrid gas/electric boats, as well as electric outboard motors . Using and buying these electric based boats and engines ensures you are not adding to the pollution in the world and on the water. Going electric helps preserve water and sea life from oil spills that may hap-pen in a gas-powered boat. These eco-friendly choices help sustain the earth and give boaters an environ-mentally friendly option.

Nautique Super Air GS22E

A 100% Electric Towboat. By: Timmy McNamee

Going electric provides an abundance of perks to your boating and water sports experience. Aside from not having to worry about fuel and maintenance costs, it’s unbelievably quiet.

Nautique partnered up with their sister company – Ingenity Electric, to create the world’s first fully electric towboat . The Super Air GS22E delivers to the industry an eco-friendly choice, to skip the fuel, cut back the maintenance, and enjoy watersports to the performance equivalent of the GS series line up. Based on their GS22 model, the Super Air GS22E utilizes clean energy with zero emissions, without the need to sacrifice any of the performance characteristics from the GS22. This eco-friendly version of the popular GS22 is sustainable, environmentally conscious, and performance driven.

With this wake boat, more push in the surf wave is provided from the additional weight of the batteries and ballast, and a smoother transition of the throttle between neutral makes driving and maneuvering silky smooth. The LINC Panoray Display provides a digital display of all battery vitals. Of course, with the Nautique Surf System; NSS and NCRS, your wakes and waves are programable to suit your preference. The GS22E is rated for an average of 2-3 hour running time and comes with an onboard battery charger to make charging effortless.

Standard on the GS22E is helm command, allowing you to control the entire LINC Panoray screen from the arm rest. Stereo, user pre-sets, speed control are all conveniently accessible beside the throttle. The cockpit of the GS22E follows that of the GS22, with spacious wrap around seating and a variety of rear seating options, equipped with self-supporting hinges to make access to storage easy. The transom of the GS line up is always a perk, with its wide walk through, and rear cut out seats. Port and Starboard storage are located on either side providing copious space for water sports equipment.

Combining the popular features of the GS series, and pairing it with its all new electric option. Nautique leads the industry with the cut-ting-edge launch of the GS22E.

Princecraft Brio E 210-2S

Electric Beast. By Tim Banse

You’ve probably noticed the global shift towards electric power. The revamped Brio pontoon series, redesigned for 2022, follows that trend. Princecraft built some of the first electric pontoons on the market. For 2022 they’ve revamped their Brio, renaming it Brio 2.0. Boasting 17’ 19’, and 21’ models built around its electric propulsion system, its redesign improves balance by compensating for the placement of the motor and its batteries. Similarly, lighter weight construction allows its engines to convert more volts and amps into forward motion.

There are three power options: The Torqeedo Cruise 2.0, the Cruise 4, and the Cruise 10.0 Cruise 2.0 is the rough equivalent to a six-hp gas outboard, Cruise 4.0 to 10 hp, and the Cruise 10.0 to 20 hp. On the water, the difference between rigging with five hp and the more powerful 20 hp would be huge, not just in acceleration and top speed but also in close quarters handling. Know that depending on how aggressive the throttle setting is, the runtime is about 4 hours. Backing off to half throttle doubles range. The battery box is roto-cast (think rough as nails) and accommodates four Group 31 batteries or a single 48 Volt Torqeedo lithium battery. An optional battery bank or solar panel recharging extends the range intensely. The optional shore power fast charger is a must-have item.

Besides the nuances of electric propulsion, the platform measures 6-inches wider, delight-fully opening up entertainment and guest spaces. The helm features a roto-molded con-sole with a storage net, back-lighted switches, and a courtesy light. A new throttle package incorporates real-time data: Battery voltage, battery charge, speed, remaining charge at current speed, and input power consumption. This then is the fuel gauge of the future.

Options that breathe life into the pontoon are a concert package with a 160W Jensen sound system, LED docking lights, tilt steering, sliding driver seat, a trim system, a mooring cover, and a full camper enclosure.

Rand Escape 30 Flagship

Scandinavia meets Electric. By Tim Banse

Scandinavians embrace electric cars. So it should come as no big surprise to learn they vigorously apply an electro-centric, sustainability mindset to boating. Enter Danish boatbuilder Rand and their Escape 30 Flagship. This electric, diesel, or gasoline-powered T-top mini yacht combines the luxurious features of a larger yacht bundled into a trailerable 30-footer.

The bow area locates twine-facing cushioned seats in the Vee with a forward-facing half bench set against the bulkhead. The accessible anchor locker and high topsides make laying anchor surefooted without fear of slipping overboard.

A hardtop, large dome windscreen stands watch over the expansive walk-around cock-pit, shielding passengers from the elements. In inclement weather, side covers close off the helm and passenger seating. The helm chair features a bolster and flip-over backrest. Kitchen and dining areas with a small fridge and wet bar also take shelter beneath the hardtop, where there’s plenty of space to store food for a day on the water and eat at a table. Below deck, the overnight cabin features a v-berth-style double bed and a minimalist bathroom.

Aft, an expansive sun lounge pulls double duty as a queen-size bed, suitable for watching the Milky Way Galaxy twinkle its way across the night sky. The full-beam-width swim platform accesses the sea via a yacht-style swim ladder.

Fitted out as an eBoat, a single electric motor flows torque to a MerCruiser Bravo Three lower unit. Lithium battery options range from 47 to 234 kWh. Sticker shock spoiler. Batteries are expensive. Propulsion options include 105/140 to 460 kWh/616 horsepower motors. The most powerful motor boasts a two-hour cruising speed at 23 knots. This field of choices leaves us with dual salient questions: How fast do you want to go? How much money do you want to spend?

SPECIFICATIONS LOA: 10 m/30 ft Beam: 2.8 m/9’ 3” Weight: 5300 lbs Use Time: 2 hours Charge Time: n/a Max Horsepower: 430 Passenger Capacity: 12 MSRP: $426,844 CAD For more information: www.randboats.com

Vision Marine Technologies Volt 180

Futuristic and Eco-Friendly. By Tim Banse

Quebec shipyard, Vision Marine Technologies , offers a tantalizing glimpse into the future of boating. Its 5.4 meters, Volt 180 open-electric-hull, carries up to 12 people while happily transiting protected bodies of water in silence, wave and emissions-free. Depending on how much electric power hangs off the transom, she can either dawdle or scorch the water.

Constructed of a fiberglass infusion, the beamy center console layout is eminently customizable to fulfill an individual’s visions of what life on the water ought to be. Forward of the helm station lies a horseshoe-shaped cockpit. Precisely which options and gizmos are chosen to populate the space will define the personality.

The captain sits on a combo pilot/passenger bench at the helm station. Immediately behind resides a sun pad. Necessary accouterments, things like a Bimini top, Permateek deck, under-water light, retractable ladder, fishing rod rack, and live wells are available. There is storage aplenty. The palette of aesthetic options include hull color, upholstery, and stitching. Generous freeboard pays big dividends in a dry ride.

In the beginning, we cited drastic variations in the choice of electric motors ranging from 3 kWh/10 HP to 180 hp. Base motor top speed is 5 knots. Want to go faster? Thanks to Volt 180’s plan-ing hull, you can. Figure on a top speed of 40 mph (35 knots). Depending on battery capacity and speed over the water estimated range is 70 miles or 3.5 hours. True to her electric motor lineage, the 180 provides a 90% reduction in energy and operation costs. Recharge batteries overnight at a marina or dock plugged into a 220 V power outlet. Underway, a screen on the center console allows dialing range, depending on speed and distance.

While the shipyard is located in Quebec, the Volt 180 is distributed worldwide, with sales offices in Portugal, the United Kingdom, and France.

SPECIFICATIONS LOA: 5.4 M | 17’08” Beam: 2.13 M | 7’0” Weight: 720 kg | 1600 lbs Use Time: 4 hours Charge Time: 6 hours Max Horsepower: 180 hp Passenger Capacity: 11 MSRP: $44,495 CAD For more information: www.visionmarinetechnologies.com

X Shore Eelex 8000

Minimalism meets Electric. By Tim Banse

Do you aspire to become one with nature, to embrace water’s natural beauty? Meet X Shore, the Swedish company known for fully electric yacht tenders and the assertion that they have viewed the future, and it is eco-green.

Hence, the launch of its Eelex 8000, combining the speed of an internal combustion engine with the muted voice of an electric motor. This 8-meter open-tender affectionately derives its name from the South American electric eel, the resemblance seen in the hull form’s streamlined body. Like an eel, Eelex runs on volts, in this case flowing electrons to a high-performance Austrian-made Brusa 225 KW/300 horsepower motor. Plugged into three-phase power, dual 60 kWh lithium-ion batteries recharge in five to eight hours. Or with superchargers in just one to two hours. In a pinch, the battery charges in any electrical outlet where you can plug in your cellphone.

A 24-inch Garmin multi-function touch-screen controls nearly everything onboard. Firmware connects via smartphone or Garmin MARQ wristwatch. Remote diagnostics are included. Eelex 8000 stops dead in its tracks within 10 seconds of detecting a watch wearer in the water or more than 10 meters away. Self-docking is one of the tantalizing updates waiting in the wings.

An open tender bareboat, Eelex changes personalities by swapping modules (fishing, social, watersport, and diving) that clip onto dual aluminum rails running from stem to stern. Owners can purchase multiple modules, easily swapped by two adults. Cork decks replace teak. Instead of fiberglass resin, the hull layup schedule includes PET (recycled plastic and optional Flax fiber. On the aesthetic side of the balance sheet, color options, Moss, Sandy, and Coffee, avoid disrupting the natural surroundings.

As simple as the sea is salt, the throttle is a rotary knob. As for performance, the top speed is 35 knots. The cruising speed is between 15 and 20 knots. The elapsed time for accelerating from dead in the water to 20 knots is 4.2 seconds. Range, running at 5 to 7 knots, is 100 nautical miles. President Patrick Hardy of BCI Marine is actively expanding the availability of X-Shore across Canada.

SPECIFICATIONS LOA: 8.0 m | 26.2 ft Beam: 2.5 m | 8.2 ft Weight: 2600 kg | 9840 lb Use Time: 2 hours Charge Time: 6 hours on 32A 24VDC Max Horsepower: n/a Passenger Capacity: n/a MSRP: $356,000 CAD For more information: www.xshore.com

Swedish electric boat company X Shore raises €8.5 million to navigate the sector’s sustainability shift

Stefano De Marzo

X Shore , a Swedish technology company behind a generation of fully-electric, silent and connected boats, announced fresh funding of €8.5 million. Several existing major shareholders participated in this round, including company founder Konrad Bergström.

The funds raised are earmarked for product R&D, improving sales and marketing strategies, and designing and scoping future new X Shore models. None of the funds are toward the factory, X Shore Industries 1, as funding requirements have been fulfilled already. X Shore is committed to achieving profitability, albeit at a revised time frame, in light of market conditions.

The company was founded in 2016 in Stockholm and has become one of the world’s leading supplier of electric boats with customers in markets such as North America and Europe. X Shore’s boats use no fossil fuels and have minimal impact on marine wildlife.

Konrad Bergström, founder and investor, said: “X Shore is a globally-recognised Swedish brand with significant support from the maritime and tech industries and everyone concerned with sustainability. Goodwill from the sector has remained consistent in spite of recent challenges experienced by the company which have risked X Shore losing focus of its founding vision. Our new CEO René Hansen has already put X Shore firmly back on course, and achieved remarkable things in a short period. Having not been operationally involved with X Shore for several years, I am proud to be back and playing a part in ensuring that Nordic innovation is charging the shoreline shift to electric.”

X Shore CEO René Hansen added: “As the CEO of X Shore, I am deeply gratified by the steadfast support of our investors and partners. Our journey is charged by a fusion of cutting-edge technology, functional design, and a steadfast commitment to sustainable performance. Our shareholders unwavering support since assuming my role has been instrumental, and we’re thrilled to deepen our collaboration with our visionary founder, Konrad Bergström. With this influx of funding, we’re poised to propel our sales forward and reframe the global narrative of our industry, infusing every innovation with the essence of our mission: to make boating one with nature with unrivalled technology, functional design, and an unwavering dedication to sustainable excellence.”

X Shore boats have received numerous design awards, achieving a hat trick by securing three prestigious awards for both its Performance and Design; winning the German Design Awards, European Powerboat of the Year and Best of Boats Award. Carnegie Investment Bank AB (publ) acted as Sole Global Coordinator and Sole Bookrunner in connection with the funding round. Baker McKenzie acted as legal advisor.

E-Motion Rudder Drive, an electric engine with… the Propeller installed into the Rudder

E-Motion Rudder Drive

Hanse Yachts introduces E-Motion Rudder Drive – an interesting propulsion type, with a special folding propeller….

An electric engine and a folding propeller have been installed into the rudder shaft, replacing the combination of diesel engine and sail drive. As a result, the propeller thrust is in line with the rudder position. This enables turning in the smallest circles or rotating around your own keel; it could be a perfect solution for maneuvering in narrow ports.

Making 4.5 knots with calm seas, the new Hanse 315 equipped with four lithium-ion batteries has a range of up to to 30 nautical miles – enough for all European inland waters and many coastal waters. At lower speeds, the range is significantly increased. The Rudder Drive can also be used with two batteries if a shorter range is required. The maximum speed is 6.1 knots – nearing the maximum speed of the diesel version.

The quiet Rudder Drive is also lightweight: 100 kg less than the diesel saildrive option. The Rudder Drive does not require a hole through the hull, lowering the resistance while sailing. The electric drive’s simplicity means less maintenance, as well.

Hanse 460 review: First in a new range

  • David Harding
  • January 26, 2023

The Hanse 460 is the first in a new range of Hanses. From new designers, she is already a big hit, with over 200 sold and a European Yacht of the Year win to its name. David Harding reports

hanse electric sailboat

Product Overview

Price as reviewed:.

For some of us, sailing has always been about the functional and fundamental. We enjoy sailing for sailing’s sake. But today people want so much more from a boat and, in many respects, today’s yachts undoubtedly offer a lot more and the Hanse 460 attempts to do just that.

What you might loosely call the mainstream European builders of family cruising yachts have been following this path for some time, making each generation of designs bigger and plusher than the last. For Hanse in particular, it has been a rapid evolution from the small, basic and functional to the large and luxurious.

This latest Hanse is the first to be designed by Berret-Racoupeau. After the earliest models, which used the moulds of discontinued, slim-hulled Scandinavian designs, every Hanse has been designed by Judel/Vrolijk in what became one of boatbuilding’s most enduring and successful partnerships.

In line with modern trends, each new wave of Hanses has been higher, wider and more voluminous than the last. Founder Michael Schmidt never lost sight of the performance side, however. For all their growing girths and towering topsides, Hanse has always made boats that sail – competitively-priced, high-volume cruisers but with easy handling (self-tacking jibs were used from the early days) and better performance than many of the alternatives.

The Hanse 460 is different. Very different. The first model from a new alliance with the French designers, it promptly won the European Yacht of the Year as the best Family Cruiser for 2022. A Hanse 510 version now follows.

The big question was whether Hanse had managed to do something different while retaining the qualities that its owners had traditionally sought.

At a glance, the Hanse 460 looks sleeker and sportier than earlier models; more angular, with a reverse rake to the bow and a pronounced knuckle running to about half-way aft. In Hanse tradition there are no hard-angled chines but, in this case, a pronounced soft chine towards the stern. In plan view you see full forward sections which, combined with the broad stern, generous freeboard and ample beam, hold the promise of enormous interior volume.

hanse electric sailboat

At the other end, a moulded bowsprit projects the anchor clear of the stem and provides an attachment point for an outer forestay which can carry a reaching headsail. Large windows in the topsides help to break up the high freeboard.

Scale those topsides and you’re faced with an expanse of wide, flat deck and coachroof. Moulded bulwarks edge the side decks to help keep feet where they belong should you venture forward when the boat’s heeled. Otherwise what stands out is the uncluttered appearance – lines are led aft beneath separate mouldings – and the plethora of deck hatches hinged every which way, including one that opens to reveal a large bow locker.

There was certainly nothing to complain about in the performance and handling department. We slipped along very nicely on a flat sea in 12-14 knots of wind, clocking around 7.5 knots with the apparent wind at just under 30°, and tacking through around 80° by the compass.

Enjoyable sailing

Weather helm was slight and the load on the wheels increased relatively little if I tried bearing away with the sheets pinned in, the single rudder providing plenty of grip. Provoked in the opposite direction, she coped well when pinched mercilessly and also when thrown into tight spins, only stalling briefly.

At least in the flat water and modest breeze we encountered, the cockpit worked well. In any wind and seaway you would be pleased to have the optional second table to port as a bracing point. At the helm stations you have a comfortable perch outboard of the wheel or, for energetic downwind sailing when you might need both hands, behind it. The Jefa linkage is light and direct, giving a good feel from the rudder. On the starboard side you can wind down the bifurcated backstay when extra headstay tension is needed.

hanse electric sailboat

Today’s cockpits are no longer just places from where you control the boat. Controlling the boat in itself is so much easier anyway, especially if – as most owners of the Hanse 460 will – you upgrade to electric winches, electric in-mast reefing and electric furling for the genoa on the outer forestay.

Other push-button options are for the hinge-down bathing platform and the cockpit tables (either side or both), which can be lowered to create large lounging areas. Alternatively there are fixed tables, as we had on the port side. A wet-bar can be added between the helm seats. It’s all part of making the cockpit a multi-function space in which every part can serve a variety of purposes. Cockpit stowage is in the form of a half-depth locker each side and – a first for Hanse – a dedicated liferaft locker right aft to starboard. With the electric-lowering option for the starboard table comes an extra moulded seat pod, which provides readily-accessible shallow stowage forward of the starboard helm and would be good to have for that reason alone.

hanse electric sailboat

Portlights and windows flood the saloon with natural light. Photo: HanseYachts/Nico Krauss

Moving about the deck and cockpit, and from one to the other, is easy in good weather. The wide open spaces let you simply stroll around – or lounge if you’re so inclined. Then again, they tend to present more of a challenge when a boat’s bouncing and heeling.

Lifestyle choices

Externally, the hull lines clearly differentiate the 460 from her earlier stablemates, but down below it’s a world apart. It’s certainly a more classy finish than we’ve seen before from Hanse; restrained in tone and a level above what we have become used to. Berret-Racoupeau is one of relatively few yacht design studios to have its own interior-design division.

hanse electric sailboat

Stateroom forecabin has generous stowage above and below the bed. Photo: HanseYachts/Nico Krauss

A host of interior layouts is available, from three to five cabins, up to four showers and from six to 10 berths. About the only constant is the presence of twin double cabins in the stern. Otherwise you can have different arrangements in the bow (cabins and heads) and amidships with a long or short linear galley and a bunk cabin or utility room to starboard where our boat had a chart table and heads compartment.

Details include backrests that hinge down in the saloon to provide trays and drinks-holders. You can press a button to lower the table, press another to pop up the TV from its central pod, and settle in for the evening.

Down here it’s all about sight-lines, integrating the different areas so no one feels left out, and ensuring that, as in the cockpit, every part of the layout performs multiple functions. In practice it creates a thoroughly pleasant and remarkably light environment.

Sometimes you come across a boat that makes you realise not only that yacht design has changed irrevocably, but also why it has changed and why it’s not going back. The Hanse 460 is unquestionably such a boat. How the crew lives aboard and moves around, both above and below decks, has clearly been thought about in the context of modern lifestyles. And this boat exudes style. If you like the fundamental design, you will be able to tailor many of the options and details to suit your tastes. A yacht like this is unlikely to slice to windward in heavy weather as comfortably as, say, a first-generation Swan 46, but most people aren’t really interested in that these days. I suspect the new Hanse will prove to be a pretty quick and competent all-rounder nonetheless. Simple sailing? The technology is not remotely simple any more. But with the Hanse 460, the sailing itself is simple and can still be a lot of fun.

Technology cooperation for new sailing yacht drive

Rudder Drive, the new electric propulsion system for sailing yachts developed by Torqeedo together with the large-scale boat builder Hanse Yachts and rudder manufacturer Jefa, combines outstanding maneuverability and minimal weight with a powerful emission-free motor.

The core of this innovative concept is the proven and specially adapted Torqeedo Cruise 4.0 with folding propeller, designed in to the rudder blade itself. The streamlined system replaces the combustion inboard or saildrive and removes the need for a separate thruster on the new sailing yacht Hanse 315 e-motion rudder drive, which debuts at the end of October.

Outstanding maneuverability

Due to the unique rudder placement of the 4 kW (8 horsepower equivalent) Torqeedo electric motor, the motor can apply efficient, directional thrust. The Jefa rudder blade’s range of motion was extended to a total of 100 degrees. Demanding maneuvers can now be accomplished without a separate thruster. While motoring, the yacht can spin on its own axis – both forward and in reverse. While docking, the stern can easily be maneuvered into the proper position. This is highly useful in windy conditions or in narrow slips.

Exceptional endurance with minimal weight

Power generation while sailing

With integrated Torqeedo fast chargers, the emission-free version of the Hanse 315 is fully charged in just three hours. The batteries can be recharged at the dock or during sailing when the Rudder Drive’s folding propeller is used to generate power. Torqeedo is the only manufacturer of electric boat propulsion systems offering industrial engineering, complete system integration and ISO 9001 certified serial production in Germany.

World launch at the Hanseboot Hamburg

For the first time, the new propulsion system will be presented installed in the Hanse 315 e-motion rudder drive at the International Boat Show Hanseboot 2016 in Hamburg. We are looking forward to welcoming you to the Hanse Yachts booth (hall 6, booth C108) on Sunday, October 30, 2016 at 2 pm.

Nominee Spotlight: Hanse 510

  • By Andrew Parkinson
  • October 5, 2023

The Berret-Racoupeau-designed Hanse 460 turned heads as a 2022 Boat of the Year nominee with a fresh take on comfort and volume but with an eye better sailing performance. The second model in the new range designed by the Berret-Racoupeau team, the Hanse 510 is set to make its US premiere at the 2023 Annapolis Sailboat Show—again as a Boat of the Year contender. From what our editors saw at the model’s recent showing in Cannes, the 510 is expected to be a formidable opponent in its category during CW ’s Boat of the Year judging.

Bow of the Hanse 510

As for dockside demeanor, this new range’s calling card appears to be a marked chine on the bow and an inverted bow to optimize sailing performance. According to the designers, attention was also paid to refining the hull shape to maximize interior space. The result is an easy-on-the-eyes 51-footer that values smooth sailing and fast, comfortable cruising.

According to the builder, the Hanse 510 offers unrivalled volume in the 50-foot class, courtesy of an optimized hull design. Chines at the bow and aft further allow for a slim waterline, ensuring prime performance and easy sailing.

The 510 is equipped with a large, practical dinghy garage, capable of holding an inflated dinghy of up to 8.8 feet; and the optional, newly developed Hanse Smart Tender System makes launching that dinghy as simple as “driving a car out of the garage.” Convenience and style dominate the interior. Even the crew cabin gets in on the volume action, as it’s much more than the typical (read: small) crew sleeping space—it is a room worthy of staying a while. The options list is lengthy, and the boat can be highly customized to meet owners’ needs.

Hanse 510 rear

“Expectations were high after the outstandingly successful Hanse 460, which has been awarded European Yacht of the Year,” says Hanjo Runde, CEO of HanseYachts. “The new Hanse 510 is the logical and consistent further development of the new concept. With her impressive volume, tremendously dynamic lines and countless options, she is redefining the 50-foot class. It is an easy to sail and enormously spacious private retreat.”

The key talking points of the 510 are numerous. A hydrodynamic design with a slender waterline promotes better hull speed. Chines fore and aft allow for a wider hull and more interior space. The reverse, wave-piercing bow makes the yacht pitch less in strong winds, while the pronounced bow chines keep the foredeck as dry as possible. On deck, the strategically placed helm position promotes total control of the Hanse 510 in any situation, with all navigation and performance information easily accessible, as well as all lines and even the electric winches on the port side. An optional hardtop shades the entire cockpit including the steering positions, and it blends seamlessly with the boat’s silhouette. It is also available in several colors and accommodates special lighting and solar panels. A fixed windscreen is another option.

Hanse 510 at anchor

The novel dinghy garage is capable of holding a dinghy of up to 8.8 ft without having to deflate it. Combined with the optional automatic comfort stairs and the newly developed Hanse Smart Tender System, a single crew member can safely and comfortably deploy the dinghy, including engine, in minutes.

Another novelty on the Hanse 510 is the easy-to-open life raft storage space in the cockpit. Situated just in front of the companionway, it’s easily accessible and has space for standard 8-person life raft containers. An optional wet bar with grill and sink is hinged at the stern so as not to absorb precious cockpit space.

The boat comes rigged with a self-tacking jib, and all lines run back to the cockpit for simple sail handling of the 710 sq. ft. mainsail and various headsails. The jib is 570 sq. ft. and the reacher measures 1,011 sq. ft., set up using a Solent-style rig on the custom bowsprit. Air draft of the deck-stepped mast is just over 77 feet above the waterline. Optional electric furling systems and winches make light work of handling halyards and sheets for the optimum in performance, short-handed sailing. The standard boat comes with a single, 80 hp saildrive, although an upgraded, optional 110 hp diesel is also available.

Hanse 510 interior

Within the interior, 14 well positioned opening hatches and eight opening windows and portholes permit maximum light and ventilation below deck. A long list of layout options are said to be available for the interior arrangement, from an “owner’s yacht” with a best-in-class sized master cabin, to a “charter yacht” with 10 berths, three bathrooms and an additional skipper cabin. The galley can be fully adapted to the owner’s needs as well: In addition to various refrigerator and freezer options, there is room for a wine cooler, dishwasher and a three-burner gas cooker plus an oven in the longitudinal pantry, which can be customized with a vast choice of colors and materials. Another option is a fully equipped navigation area with a forward-facing seat and a large salon table. The extensive options list, ranging from a washing machine in the utility room to flatscreens in the master cabin and salon, is crowned by the Flagship Package, which includes highest-end fabrics and materials, not to mention a “hidden” bar behind the folding backrest in the salon.

At its core, the Hanse 510 emphasizes a roomy cockpit, large but manageable sail plan, and overall performance that is easily managed by a couple, but perhaps what really sets the Hanse 510 apart from other sailboats in its class is the limitless level of customization the builder is willing to offer. The Hanse 510 also comes with a CE rating of A-12, so it is well suited for those who want to venture longer distances.

The nation’s first all-electric tug boat has docked at the Port of San Diego and expects to begin emissions-free operations in about a month.

Operated by Crowley Maritime Corporation , the 82-foot eWolf will escort ships entering and leaving the Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal using electric power instead of diesel fuel, helping slash greenhouse gas emissions at the port and its neighbors in Barrio Logan and National City.

For the record:

1:58 p.m. March 13, 2024 This story has been updated to show the correct amount of government funding that went to the project.

“This is a big deal,” said port chairman Frank Urtasun at a news conference Monday. “This is new technology.”

Capable of speeds of up to 12 knots, the eWolf is powered by a 6.2 megawatt-hour main propulsion battery and two electric drives. The tug has thrust — also known as bollard pull in the parlance of the shipping industry — of 76.8 short tons, which is more powerful than the diesel-powered counterparts at the port.

Constructed in Alabama, the eWolf is equipped with two small generators for emergency use that allow the boat to travel longer distances at a reduced speed.

“Like an electric car, you step on the gas and it jumps,” said Paul Manzi, vice president of Crowley Shipping, based in Jacksonville, Fla. “All of the attributes that you have with an electric motor operation in a car or in an electric truck, you see here in the (eWolf) at massive scale. And it’s extremely quiet so when it pulls away from the dock you literally won’t hear any noise.”

The tug boat’s electricity will come from a charging station that is part of a microgrid facility equipped with two energy storage containers. Battery modules in each container have storage capacity of nearly 1.5 megawatt-hours.

Interconnected with the help of San Diego Gas & Electric, the charging station at the port is designed to allow the vessel to recharge quickly and reduce peak loads on the electric grid.

Operators plan to charge the eWolf overnight so it can perform its chores during daytime hours.

“This technology has individually been around for a while, but it hasn’t necessarily been integrated and optimized to all work together — and that’s kind of our role,” said Bruce Strupp, vice president at ABB Marine & Ports , the company that designed the boat’s propulsion system. “Some of the technology is our technology, some of it’s third-party technology, but we integrate it all together.”

The electric tug boat is expected to begin commercial operations at the port in mid- to late-April, depending on the completion of the charging station.

The all-electric eWolf tugboat at the Port of San Diego

Officials at Crowley did not release the eWolf’s price tag Monday, saying only that it cost about twice as much as a conventional diesel-powered tug boat of comparable size.

But, Manzi said, the company expects the eWolf’s maintenance and operating costs will be “dramatically lower” than what’s spent on a diesel-powered tug boat because the electric model has fewer moving parts.

The entire project — the vessel as well as the charging station — received four grants that added up to $13.67 million, with two grants of $10.9 million from the San Diego Air Pollution Control District, one grant of just over $2 million from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and $750,000 from the federal government’s Maritime Administration.

In 2020, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed an executive order that directed state agencies to transition off-road vehicles — including tug boats — and equipment to 100 percent zero emissions by 2035.

By replacing one of the port’s diesel-powered tugs, the eWolf is expected to eliminate the consumption of about 35,000 gallons of diesel fuel per year. In its first 10 years of use, the electric tug boat is expected to reduce about 3,100 metric tons of carbon dioxide from the port and its surrounding areas such as Barrio Logan and National City.

“We’re trying to be good neighbors and trying to be able to help to reduce emissions here to help the electrification movement,” Urtasun said, adding that the port has spent about $130 million on various electrification projects.

Last year, the Port of San Diego became the first in North America to install a pair of all-electric cranes to load and off-load heavy cargo. Each 262 feet high, the cranes replaced an older crane that ran on diesel fuel. Together, the cranes expect to help the port reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 47 metric tons per year.

What candela’s electric hydrofoiling passenger ferry means for sustainable transportation.

The all-electric-powered Candela P-12 ferry flies over the water on hydrofoils

I would never say “I told you so,” but…now that Candela , the world’s leading producer of all-electric-powered hydrofoiling boats, has just closed the largest funding round in the company's history, I might be bold enough to say…”I’m not surprised.”

That’s because I’ve been closely following the development of this wonderfully smart company’s hydrofoiling boats since I test flew a P-7 near their small and efficient shop in Stockholm in 2021. So, I’m really not surprised they just raised over $25 million to expand production of their game-changing P-12 ferry. And since yacht building powerhouse Groupe Beneteau is a key partner in the largest fundraising round Candela has ever completed it appears Candela’s brand of tech-controled hydrofoiling is about to go global.

“Our investment perfectly aligns with Groupe Beneteau‘s ecological transition objectives, scaling up innovative solutions for more sustainable boating and unparalleled experiences,” says Bruno Thivoyon, CEO of Groupe Beneteau, the world's largest boat manufacturer (15 factories, 9 brands, and more than 8,000 yachts built annually) with a total revenue of over $1.5 billion in 2023. “Candela’s technology, enabling significantly more efficient electric vessels, will transform waterborne transport into its next sustainable phase.”

A Candela P-8 and P-12 underway near Stockholm, Sweden

“We couldn’t be more excited about having Groupe Beneteau on board,” says Gustav Hasselskog, Founder and CEO of Candela. “As the leading global boat company, their trust is a stamp of approval for our technology to transform waterborne transportation. We’re excited for the possibilities ahead."

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

The new investment round will help to scale up production to meet demand for the recently launched Candela P-12, the world’s first electric hydrofoil ferry. The P-12 is the first fast and long-range electric ferry on the market. Its efficient hydrofoil technology cuts lifetime emissions by 97.5% compared to diesel vessels, while simultaneously allowing operators to save up to 50% in operating costs. Since it generates minimal wake, the P-12 has been granted exemptions from speed limits, as for example on its maiden route in Stockholm, where it from July will cut travel times in half compared to road transport and legacy diesel vessels.

And it’s pretty obvious Hasselskog and company are on the right track. According to some projections the market for electric vessels is expected to be worth $14.2 Billion USD in 2030.

“We’ve spent years developing the technological maturity, and now we’re fit for scaling to commercial vessels. As in any industry, the fastest-scaling company will dominate the market,” says Hasselskog.

The Candela P-8 and P-12 hardly make a ripple as they fly over the water on computer-controlled ... [+] hydrofoils

Other backers in the round include longtime investors EQT Ventures , Ocean Zero LLC , and Kan Dela AB. The new investment brings total funding since Candela’s inception to over $75 million.

“EQT Ventures has steadfastly backed Candela's vision to accelerate the shift towards fossil fuel-free lakes and oceans since 2021. The launch of Candela's P-12 vessels signifies a watershed moment in sustainable transport", says Lars Jörnow, Partner at EQT Ventures.

The only question is: when will we see a P-12 ferry here in the US?

Candela’s electric ferries multiply as the startup lines up $25M in new funding

hanse electric sailboat

Electric boat maker Candela is approaching cruising speed with $25 million in new funding and the first commercial deployment of its new P-12 ferry in New Zealand. The company has global ambitions for its highly efficient boats and has completed and delivered dozens of them — which is a lot in this industry!

Candela has been slowly upping the size of its vessels for years, starting with the considerably smaller C-7 and C-8 (noting the length in meters) — of which, as of this week, they have now produced a total of 70. The P-12, a ferry design that can handle up to 30 passengers, made its debut late last year .

Just last week, the P-12 was given its first assignment: ferry people around New Zealand’s Lake Manapōuri , a scenic destination but also, more importantly, the site of the country’s largest hydroelectric power station. And now staff at that station can get to work via clean-running boat rather than driving, which the companies estimate will save around 240 tons of emissions per year. It’s a start, and it will help keep the lake clean and quiet.

International interest in these boats is also evident in the participation of Groupe Beneteau, a more than century-old boating company that makes thousands of vessels yearly, in the funding round. Groupe Beneteau CEO Bruno Thivoyon expressed in the press release that investing in Candela makes sense as part of the company’s “ecological transition objectives, scaling up innovative solutions for more sustainable boating.”

Many legacy boating companies are embracing electric engines and next-generation tech; I spoke with the head of another major manufacturer, Brunswick’s Dave Foulkes, at CES about it. He said that the collaborations are fruitful because the small, growing companies need the income and reach, while the larger ones need ready-to-deploy tech. Like any other industry, you have to know when to buy and when to build, and big boating companies are happy to buy — or invest.

Candela’s boats use hydrofoils with electric engines mounted on the bottom to effectively fly above the surface of the water once they get past a certain speed, vastly reducing energy consumption — historically and understandably a sticking point for electric boating. The approach does necessitate a powerful autopilot to keep it balanced, and despite their assurances, I wonder about how they’d handle log collisions, but overall the advantages seem to outweigh the drawbacks.

I drove one over the summer in Seattle (watching closely for logs, rather common in Elliott Bay) and wished they would replace the gas-chugging fast passenger ferries with P-12s. Candela isn’t the only one pursuing this market, either; Navier is also attempting to woo coastal communities with the draw of quiet, energy-efficient transit and is currently shuttling Stripe employees around the Bay Area . And while Zin Boats has been quiet for some time, they are also nailing down markets for the next version of their vessel.

The $25 million round was led, as mentioned, by Beneteau, with participation from EQT Ventures, Ocean Zero LLC, and Kan Dela AB.

World's largest sport fishing yacht underway in the North Sea

When it comes to catching marlin, tuna and other large game fish offshore, bigger is ALWAYS better. And now that the 171-foot-long custom sportfishing yacht Special One (project 406 that was designed by Vripack Yacht Design and built by Royal Husiman ) has begun seatrials on the North Sea, the term of “big offshore fishing boat” has a whole new meaning.

Vripack Co-Creative Director, Bart M. Bouwhuis explains the concept perfectly. “Project 406 is a sportfisher on steroids. It has the true proportions and long flaring bow of a typical American sportfish boat. We paired this with the harmonious feel of a luxurious yacht. It’s a supersized model with super chic curves, realized on a grand scale.”

World's largest sport fishing yacht built by Royal Huisman

I was curious to see how the world’s largest sportfish yacht would combine an authentic sports fishing experience with genuine superyacht scale, comfort, and refinement. But now that I’ve seen photos of Special One underway, I’m pretty sure her aluminum hull and superstructure will deliver smooth and efficient passages out to the fishing grounds. And the well-designed fishing area in the stern will be ideal for catching all types and sizes of fish.

China’s Electric Cars Keep Improving, a Worry for Rivals Elsewhere

More capable autonomous driving is just one way Chinese automakers are threatening to pull ahead — their E.V.s are also becoming bigger and roomier.

A light blue car on display at an auto show being photographed by a person with a smartphone.

By Keith Bradsher

Reporting from Beijing

Automakers in China are building a new generation of bigger, more technologically advanced and competitive electric cars, threatening to leap further ahead of their global rivals as they step up exports around the world.

The dozens of car companies operating in China plan to put 71 new battery electric models on sale this year. Many new models have taller hoods for a bolder appearance and more storage space. The cars have bigger tires that improve braking. The seats are thicker and more comfortable. The batteries are ever smaller, more powerful and quicker to recharge.

The changes are aimed at making the cars even more appealing for customers in China and more competitive abroad. Along with plug-in hybrid cars, battery electric cars are taking sales away from gasoline-powered cars and their manufacturers.

China is also moving ahead with the technology and regulations for self-driving cars. The authorities approved data security arrangements this week for more capable autonomous vehicles. They approved cars from Tesla, the American electric vehicle company that also builds and sells cars in China, as well as five Chinese manufacturers, including BYD, Tesla’s principal global rival , and Nio, a longtime player in China’s auto sector .

The approvals show the Chinese government’s eagerness to push the development of self-driving vehicles, which are widely seen as central to future competitiveness in the car industry. The technology is more compatible with battery electric cars than with plug-in hybrids or gasoline-powered cars, and Chinese companies are trying to catch up with Tesla, the leader in these systems.

In the United States, Tesla’s so-called Autopilot feature has been the subject of a series of government safety investigations. But in China, regulators and the general public have tended to see the technology as safer than relying on human drivers.

Chinese automakers have been investing heavily in driver-assistance software. An electric car “is becoming a robot on wheels,” said Frank Wu, the vice president of design at Jiyue. The company is a joint venture of Zhejiang Geely, a Chinese automaker, and Baidu, one of China’s main artificial intelligence companies and Tesla’s partner in its self-driving efforts in China.

Better batteries and falling costs underpin China’s push in electric cars. CATL, based in southeastern China and the world’s largest manufacturer of electric car batteries , announced last week at the Beijing auto show that a 10-minute charge of its newest battery would give a range of 370 miles. A 30-minute full charge would give a range of 620 miles, the company said.

Achieving these distances involves extremely high-precision chemistry and engineering and “putting each nano-particle in the right place,” said Gao Huan, the chief technology officer of CATL’s electric car business.

The advances have meant automakers can use smaller batteries, freeing up space in cars’ interiors, or they can keep the battery the same size and achieve greater range.

Much of the extra space is going into larger back seats with more legroom.

“We’re going to put more focus on the backseat — we want to make it more appealing,” said Wang Tan, the general manager of design at XPeng Motors , a Chinese electric car manufacturer.

Manufacturers of electric vehicles used to put a priority on keeping cars as light as possible, because weight is what mostly matters for how far a car can go before needing a recharge. But more powerful batteries now allow electric vehicles to be taller and heavier.

Bigger front ends create a luxurious appearance that taps into many buyers’ admiration of sport utility vehicles, said Kris Tomasson, vice president of design at Nio.

“A higher front has that prestige,” he said.

Chinese automakers are also embracing designs with more edges, like a blue-green Denza Z9GT sedan displayed at the show by BYD. They are shifting away from lightweight but costly aluminum and building cars with a higher proportion of slightly heavier but cheaper steel alloys.

Aluminum body panels need to be more curved and do not allow for the sharper lines possible with a return to steel, said Stefan Sielaff, Geely’s vice president of global design. The effect is to make the cars more visually striking as automotive fashions shift away from the rounded shapes on previous electric cars.

Customers overseas as well as in China are getting pickier. Many are buying plug-in hybrids instead of cars powered only by batteries, although the markets for both are still growing in China.

Not all the electric cars at the Beijing show are bigger and roomier. Xiaomi, a Chinese producer of inexpensive smartphones, displayed its first electric car, the SU7 sports sedan. The tech company has made a move into the car market that Apple has mulled for many years without undertaking.

The SU7 looks almost identical from the outside to a Porsche Taycan electric car. But it costs less than a fifth of a Taycan, which ranges in China from $140,000 to $275,000.

Lei Jun, the chief executive of Xiaomi, was followed by a crowd of admirers as he walked around the auto show.

He exuded confidence in a speech at the SU7 introduction while still expressing worry about one rival. “Except Tesla, there seems to be hardly anyone better than us,” he said.

Chinese auto executives consistently express a mixture of respect and fear of Tesla, an automaker that did not introduce any new cars at the show. Last week, Tesla announced a 9 percent fall in sales and a 55 percent drop in profits in the first quarter of this year, and plans to lay off more than a tenth of its worldwide employees, or 14,000 people.

Long-established Western automakers, by contrast, lag in autonomous driving and are struggling to catch up in electric cars.

General Motors and Ford Motor have lost much of their market share in China over the past five years. Ford introduced the most-talked-about car at the Beijing auto show in 2020 , the Mustang Mach-E electric car. But administrative problems led to more than a year of production delays, and public interest evaporated.

Ford decided this year to emphasize very different Mustangs, equipped with hulking five-liter V-8 gasoline engines and four exhaust pipes.

Bill Russo, a former chief executive of Chrysler China who is now an electric car industry consultant in Shanghai, said Tesla had emerged as the sole strong global contender from the United States in the electric vehicle market.

“If they ever died, the whole E.V. market dies with it in the United States,” he said.

Established companies in Europe also face formidable challenges. China’s electric car exports to Europe are climbing, prompting a European Union investigation into whether they are unfairly subsidized.

Ralf Brandstätter, the chief executive of Volkswagen China, called for Chinese manufacturers to buy car parts in Europe and assemble them there using European workers.

“Then they have to handle a European labor force, European enterprises, and they have to compete in the same environment as we are competing,” he said. China has used steep tariffs and other measures to require that multinationals make cars in China for the Chinese market.

Chinese E.V.s are going next to the United States.

Geely is exporting its Polestar 2 to the United States from China, and paying a 27.5 percent tariff to do so. It is also beginning to export its new Polestar 3, before a planned shift of production to an assembly line being completed this summer in South Carolina.

Bodycam footage shows ct man shooting at another person before hartford officer opens fire, news politics national politics, subscriber only, ct u.s. rep courtney enlists 100+ colleagues to press white house on submarine building.

Electric Boat is at the top of a submarine manufacturing and supply chain that has been hiring at a furious pace and investing billions of dollars in capacity in an effort to meet the aggressive Navy production goals designed to contain Chinese aggression in the Indo-Pacific

The second district Democrat, an influential voice in naval affairs as ranking member of the Seapower Subcommittee of the U.S. House Armed Services Committee , obtained the signatures of the bipartisan group on a letter, made public Wednesday, urging the leadership of the House Appropriations Committee to reverse the Navy’s decision to break with recent tradition and pay for one rather than two Virginia class ships next year.

It is a tactic that has worked for Courtney in the past, earning him the nickname Two Sub Joe. Four years ago, he organized a similar letter and succeeded in restoring a second Virginia submarine that had been cut from the fiscal 2021 defense budget by the administration of former President Donald J. Trump.

The Groton-based Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics , located in Courtney’s eastern Connecticut district, is the U.S. Navy’s prime submarine contractor and lead shipyard on both the Virginia attack and Columbia ballistic missile submarine programs. The Navy said it needs a dozen Columbias and 66 Virginias to carry out its mission, numbers that could keep shipyards and suppliers operating at old, Cold War production rates for decades.

Electric Boat is at the top of a submarine manufacturing and supply chain that has been hiring at a furious pace and investing billions of dollars in capacity in an effort to meet the aggressive Navy production goals designed to contain Chinese aggression in the Indo-Pacific. Electric Boat hired more than 5,000 last year and says it is on track to match that pace far into the future.

Electric Boat military contracts launch economic boom in parts of Connecticut. This is how it was done.

Courtney argues that by eliminating a submarine, the Navy is sending the wrong message to thousands of companies in the submarine supply chain, locally and across the country, that have been investing in labor, equipment and material in the expectation of a steady naval procurement rate.

“We are deeply concerned with the proposal to procure just one Virginia Class submarine in the President’s proposed FY 2025 budget,” the letter to the committee chairs says. “In recent years, Congress has heard consistent and alarming testimony about the growing capabilities and increased undersea activity of competitors like Russia and China.”

Elsewhere, it says, “Preserving a consistent production schedule is essential for shipyard and industrial base stability, and to meet the Navy’s operational requirements. This is exactly why Congress has strongly supported and defended the consistent two-per-year build rate of Virginia Class attack submarines since 2011.”

Senior Naval officers have said the decision to cut a Virginia submarine was based on concern that the submarine industrial base lacks the capacity at present to meet its goal of delivering two Virginias and one Columbia a year by 2028. The Navy said it needs deliveries at that rate to meet national security needs while fulfilling its commitment to provide from three to five Virginia submarines to Australia under the tripartite AUKUS treaty.

Decades of flat, post-cold war spending shrunk the U.S. fleet by half. It also depleted the ranks of welders, shipfitters and riggers who build ships at Electric Boat and its partner in the Virginia and Columbia programs, the Newport News Shipbuilding Division of Huntington Ingalls Industries.

Courtney has said Electric Boat is on pace to meet the Navy’s production targets and that cutting a ship from the budget will slow production in the long term.
