Gypsy by Woods Designs

Budget offshore cruiser with central cuddy.

URL: http://sailingcatamarans.com/index.php/designs/3-25ft-to-30ft-catamarans-designs/176-gypsy

Description:

The GYPSY 28 was the Woods Designs own cruising boat for five very successful years

It was designed as an easy to build budget ocean cruiser and many are now sailing in all corners of the world.

The central cuddy is a feature seen on several of our most recent designs, as it combines the advantages of the open deck boat's easy access forward with the central saloon and cockpit protection of a bridge deck cabin boat.

There is standing headroom and 4 berths in the hulls and a dinette and galley in the central cuddy - which also features standing headroom. Hulls can be flat panel or round bilge and GYPSY can be built in ply, foam sandwich or strip plank. It is the minimum size boat I suggest that a couple use for ocean cruising. It can be built in sections and assembled by the water.

Any other WOODS GYPSY owners in Australia

Hi. I'm new to this forum, and am interested to know if there are any other GYPSY owners around. I purchased my Woods Gypsy - 28' catamaran - 2 years ago in Brisbane. Have been busy sprucing her up ever since. I'm surprised there aren't more of these fantastic little cats around, would appreciate knowing of any. Cheers! -- Quote: Originally Posted by guzzis3 I like all your deignes Mr Woods, in fact I've been agonizing over a gypsy named vala (I think) currently for sale here in Brisbane. I am determined my next boat will be plastic. -- Quote: Originally Posted by MY BOAT SHED Greetings all. I purchased Vela in March 2012 in Brisbane and having been having fun with her ever since. This Gypsy was launched in 1996, and may have been the first one home built in Australia. The builder, Lachlan (Lochlan) Wilson, went out on a wing and built the hulls out of hand laid fibreglass panels. Very Solid! The result is an overbuilt, but very strong and forgiving little cat which sails beautifully. Vela drives well to windward, and is responsive without being skittish. It has cruised the Queensland Coast and served as a liveaboard for myself & my partner, with our little dog and ship's cat. I'm on the handstand now for the second time, and am pleased to report there has been no osmosis in the boat to date. I've done one or two repairs and am in the process of doing upgrades and improving the paint system. Will post photos shortly. If anyone has any more info on this boat I would love to hear about it. Meanwhile, here is a photo taken by a friend of me and Vela riding out the Australia Day 2013 front, which we fondly refer to as "ex cyclone Oswald." We were on anchor in front of the Versace Hotel on the Gold Coast Broadwater.

I saw Vela when the Wilsons left her up here in Shute Harbour for a year. (The GRP hull panels are a standard design option, no real weight penalty.) Getting that amount of comfortable accom on such a small boat without ruining the sailing performance and looks is very clever design. The fitout can be Wharram-simple without looking "wrong". A Gypsy has done a single-handed Panama-Tahiti. There is another one in Aus that has extended bows, extended cabin roofs, and was for sale at $99,000!
Hi, thanks for the reply. Yes I've seen that one online for sale for $99,000. Hasn't budged in the past twelve months. That one appears to be professionally built. I agree with your comments about the design. Folks are always amazed at the space I have. I basically live in the main cuddy, which has a double birth. Starboard hull is a dedicated private head, shower etc. Port is guest accommodation. I'm quite spoilt for space... I could comfortably sleep 6 if I needed to. Did you personally know the Wilsons? I'm quite curious at to how long he spent building Vela. According to the survey which was done when he sold the boat, it was only launched in 1996. I've just finished repainting top to bottom, all new rigging, windows, wiring, anchor winch, trampoline, sail cover etc etc. She's looking real pretty now. I'll post some finished pics when I get back in the water next week. Here we are on the hard before the antifoul goes on.
Had a brief chat and a quick look on board when they had her dried out in front of the Whitsunday Sailing Club for a bottom scrub. On Richard Woods' website, there's a quote from Mr. Wilson saying it took 17 months of evenings and weekends to build her, at a cost of 10K pounds sterling, with new rig and outboard motor. If you ever get up to the Whitsundays, I'd love to go for a sail. Happy to provide bribes of beer, a good red, bag of prawns etc etc............

Great looking Gypsy you have the MY BOAT SHED. As you can probably see from my screen name Im quite a fan of the Gypsy, and would like to build one sometime in the future (have the plans, just need the time/space/cash) I think Ive seen her anchored/moored near Southport marina a few times, If that was Vela she certainly looks like a keeper Cheers, Dave
Hi Dave Somehow I missed your reply on this thread....just read it now for the first time. Thanks for the compliment! Yes that is VELA you've seen around the Southport Yacht Club. It's a great little boat for living aboard, and for single handing. I've done a lot of upgrades in the past three years, and am about to start sanding and repainting the interior. The builder did a terrific job and build her very strong...but he wasnt too worried about aesthetics. She was a bit agricultural on the inside! Lol. I definitely recommend this design is you're after a smaller cat. Cheers, Karyn gypsy28 said: ↑ Great looking Gypsy you have the MY BOAT SHED. Thinking if selling my WOODS Gypsy this year Thought it was worth mentioning on here that I'm thinking of putting my WOODS GYPSY, 28' sailing catamaran up for sale this year. Over the past two years I've been cruising a lot with my partner on his Pescott 38' cat. My VELA doesnt get off the mooring much except for maintainence. Most of my spare time time and money has been spent upgrading VELA over the past 4 years but I can't be on two boats at once (apparently!). This is a fantastic little cat. Perfect for single handing, or would suit a young family starting out. Proven coastal cruiser, built well and stong with solid hand laid fibreglass panels. A very forgiving boat, launched in 1996 with many upgrades in the past 4 years. Feel free to pass this info along if you know anyone who's looking. She's moored on the Gold Coast, QLD. I won't be advertising her until I've done a sand and repaint on the interior. Should be around mid-year. Cheers, Karyn www.recycledboatbits.com.au

RE Vela I built her in Tully. I always joke about boats I have built. They look great at 50 metres but when you get close, cosmetically, Lachie built it. Pleased it's still going great. I had a lot of fun in her.If you need more information email me.

Sailing Meadowhawk

Living the warm months aboard a self built richard woods designed sailing catamaran, building richard woods romany catamaran.

Just the facts: I received the first shipment of materials August 2007 and launched September 3, 2014. I worked on the boat about 2/3 of the year when the weather was warm enough. During that time I also had a full time job, a son who aged from 6-13, and a wife who supported my crazy dreams. I estimate that I averaged 30+ hours per week building during those months of the year. I built the hulls inside my Uncle’s shop in Finland, MN and the rest of the smaller parts in my garage in Minneapolis. Fully assembled, the boat is 20’ wide and difficult to trailer on the roads, so in September of 2011, I moved the hulls, cabin, and lots of other bits to Watergate Marina in St. Paul (5 miles from my Minneapolis home) to put it all together where Meadowhawk was ultimately launched in the Mississippi river.

I’m writing this after some time has passed and I’ve lived aboard 5 months over 2 seasons and I’m pretty sure building was a good experience. I joke that it was a terrible idea and in some ways it probably was, but those wonderful 5 months have softened my attitude. The two things I walked away with: The boat is more than I ever hoped for and while I still have much to learn, I have developed more skills and knowledge than I hoped for.

Maybe this is true of all boats, but it seems home built boats are never “done”. I have many ideas to improve the space, sail handling, and just finish little things left undone, but this spring (2016) will be the shortest project list I’ve ever dealt with, so that’s a good thing. More sailing and less not sailing.

Building Stages

Core cell catamaran hulls September 01, 2007 Building the hulls wasn’t that hard, but I did have to learn a lot about large scale laminating

Back yard building...literally September 01, 2009 If it’s small enough to be built in my garage or yard it was. Here’s the story of a back yard boat shop.

Final Assembly September 01, 2011 At a finish size of 34’ long and 20’ wide, the final assembly is best done near the water. I never thought it would be a river.

launch day September 03, 2014 Ready or not it’s time to launch

getting the mast up July 01, 2015 it was one of the more stressful projects, but I finally became a sailboat.

Spring Projects May 13, 2016 A little maintenance with a bunch of improvements

2021 Richard Woods designed Strider/Shadow, catamaran

  • Description

Seller's Description

Go to Sailing Texas classifieds for current sailboats for sale Richard Woods designed Strider/Shadow, catamaran sailboat for sale LOA is 24’, beam 14’, draft 6” with dagger boards up, easily beached. Fully decked between the main beams, adding 3x the deck space. Hulls are strip cedar to the gunnels and marine ply above. All covered with epoxy/fiberglass. Launched in 2021, this is a very easy sailing, comfortable and fairly fast sailboat. Fully functional rig off of a 26’ monohull, main good, jib worn but works fine. Jiffy reefing on both sails. Simple electrical system includes new deep cycle battery w/solar charger, fixed VHF, new Raymarine ST200 tillerpilot, standard lights and charging ports. Small 110v inverter Trailerable, but takes several hours at the ramp. Trailer is free with boat, in poor condition. Interior is bare, no accommodations installed, I use it as a camp cruiser and daysailer. Engine is a Tohatsu 9.8, it’s way overkill and I’ll take $1500 off the price if you’d like to buy your own more appropriate engine. (IMO 6hp SailPro would be perfect)

Ready to sail and in a slip that is available from the private owner at a very good rate. (see video)

If you’re serious, let’s talk, and we’ll go for a sail!

Gypsy 30 Catamaran

Well-known member

I've come across a Gypsy 30 plywood catamaran that is within my meager budget. It was home built in 2006 by the current owners who are selling up for health reasons. Do any of you have an opinion about the design, sailing capabilities or warnings about this potential boat? By the way, it hasn't been listed on any sites yet, so I'm unable to offer more details than the above.

As per my very first post on the forum, I intend living on it and eventually crossing many an ocean.

Active member

Unfortunately the details that I've been given so far are very scant, but Google agrees with you that it's a Woods design. From the one photo that I have, I would agree with you and Google.

Ref Hardy Marine, the boat is in the Caribbean, which might be a little too far for Hardy's to give it the once-over.

Bajansailor

Just being pedantic, I think the Gypsy is 28' rather than 30', unless your chap made her longer? Sailing Catamarans - Gypsy - 8.5m Budget Offshore Cruiser with central cuddy Whereabouts is she in the Caribbean? I am a marine surveyor in Barbados, but I know of surveyors in most of the other islands. I bought a set of study plans for the Gypsy from Richard 20+ years ago - I had a dream about building one, but sadly that never happened, as other things got in the way. I can confirm though that Richard's designs are very good, after being on board a few, and sailing on his Eclipse here (after she had had a text book crossing from the Canaries about 15 years ago).

You are correct about it being 28ft. The seller said "oops, sorry". I'm still struggling to get recent photos out of them - they're now aware that I've done a right-click, properties and checked the date of their photos. Oops no 2!

Can you perhaps post a photo of her on here? Whereabouts in the Caribbean is she?

Grenada. Will post a photo once I've lost interest in her - I don't want someone else snatching her up while I'm dilly-dallying about. Sorry, I've got so much still to learn, so don't need any competition from anyone with plenty of experience.

capnsensible

capnsensible

I have a surveyor friend in Grenada who could go and have a look at her for you, maybe just an initial inspection to take up to date photos and then you could decide if you want to proceed further? I very much doubt that anybody else will snatch her up in a hurry - there are a lot of boats for sale in the Caribbean (a lot more than what you might see if you do a search on Yachtworld and type in 'Caribbean' as the region). And Captain Sensible makes a very valid point above....... Edit - if you were to buy her, would you want to stay in the Caribbean, or head west, or take her back to Europe, or......... ??

What the good Captain Sensible says makes good sense, but I'll pursue this just a little longer. Wherever I end up buying a boat, I'll stick around there until I'm confident enough to venture further afield. Someone off a facebook group has recommended Neil batchelor in Grenada. I haven't made contact with him yet - am waiting for the sellers to send recent photos. If they don't, I'll move on... so no point yet in filling Neil's wallet with my hard-earned - if that makes sense? Thank you for your great suggestions so far.

V1701

Unless you really want to be in the caribbean for a while you're making life very difficult for yourself, there's loads of boats for sale in the UK & it really is a buyers market... Edit - here's a famous cat for sale a bit closer to home, sorted & made famous on Youtube ( Sailing Kittiwake )...

Owner’s comments

Swing Cat has beaching keels and kick-up rudders so is happy drying out in tidal creeks.  Its wind generator and 6 solar panels charge 500Ah of battery storage which provides electrical energy via 12V DC and 240V AC distribution.    One can live off the grid with a high level of creature comforts while remaining connected to the shore via computers and mobile phones (if desired!).

When on shore power in a marina, full use can be made of a microwave, toaster, electric kettle and electric heating.

The interior accommodation consists of a double cabin in the stern of each hull and single cabins in the bow of each hull, giving sleeping accommodation for 6.    The bridgedeck cabin provides comfortable seating around a large table and access to both hulls.    A cockpit awning, together with cockpit cushions, provide further shady seating in the cockpit as well as shelter from any shower.    The trampoline forward of the bridgedeck, between the hulls, is a favourite place for sunbathing, watching the sun go down, or for watching dolphins on passage.

The hulls and cabins are fully lined and insulated ensuring a cool interior on hot days and a cosy interior on cool days.    When at anchor on cold evenings a wood burning stove is available.

Swing Cat is designed to have minimal impact on the environment.    The sources of renewable energy means there is no need to have a fossil fuel generator.    There is an electric motor for the tender.

There is no discharge of sewerage from the boat and no conventional holding tank.    An ecological toilet ensures the separation of liquids from solids with both being captured, and disposed of, separately.    The absence of urine in the solids tank, together with the use of mechanical ventilation, ensures that using the heads is a pleasant experience!

Swing Cat also has a grey water tank for cruising in environmentally sensitive areas. This tank retains washing-up and shower water until it is OK to discharge it – for example when dried out on a beach, grey water can be discharged only when the tide is in and the boat is afloat.

With forward-looking sonar, broadband radar, AIS Tx & Rx, VHF radio, Echomax radar reflector, electronic chart plotter, full size chart table and safety equipment, including lightning protection, Swing Cat is fully equipped for creek crawling or bluewater sailing.

Swing Cat was built by its owner starting in 2011 and was launched in 2016.    The website documenting the build and its sea trials can be found at www.swingcat.co.uk

The reason for the sale is that the owner and his family no longer have as much time for sailing as they did previously.

Pre-owned boats

Due to popular request we now offer this page for those who want to buy and sell their multihull. This web site is seen by thousands of people every month who are specifically interested in sailing catamarans, so it makes sense to advertise here and reach serious potential buyers.

A quote from someone who listed their boat with me: "He paid the price I was asking which I'm pleased about. I only had the boat advertised on your site and was getting an average of about one email a week. I originally thought it could take 2years to sell, what with the economic climate and all. Also it is an unusual boat but it does attract a lot of attention."

" These adverts clearly get viewed by enthusiasts. We needed a quick sale and this advert generated interest from 3 parties in the first week.  John (Belfast)"

The cost to advertise your Woods Design is £50  and the advert will run until sold.  Please use the button below to order an advert

Or the cost is £75  if it is a non Woods Design boat. Again,  the advert will run until sold .  Please use the button below to order an advert

Boats wanted and gear for sale/wanted adverts can be put on my Forum pages. These adverts are free.

After purchasing an advert please email us with full details of your boat, including up to 4 photos.  Please note, you should send advert as plain text and photos as small separate jpegs. Doc and rtf files will not be accepted as they take too long to reformat. Thank you.

NOTE:  I have kept some old adverts online so you can get a guide to prices

Strike 18 in Florida

Living in Florida, I chose to build the open deck version of the Strike 18.

As advertised, this boat is light and nimble, making it a joy for single handed sailing. The boat has seen three sailing seasons only on fresh water. With low aspect ratio keels, sailing where dagger boards fear to go is not a problem, as well as easy beaching.

woods gypsy catamaran for sale

The boat has plenty of room for you and a few of your friends. An extra storage compartment was built into the rear of the main hull.

The outriggers are Quattro 16 amas built for this boat. The entire boat was built new using Okoume marine plywood, Douglas fir solid framing. All plywood surfaces covered with 7 oz. Fibre Glast fiberglass and epoxy.

woods gypsy catamaran for sale

The spars and rigging were designed and built by US Spars. The sails, supplied by UK Sailmakers have standard rigging. The main sail 150 S.F., the jib 50 S.F.

The boat includes a Suzuki 2.5 H.P. four stroke outboard motor. The boat is trailered on a Magic Tilt aluminum trailer.

Swingcat an Eclipse 32

Swing Cat is a performance cruising catamaran with a bridgedeck. It is a Richard Woods Eclipse design measuring  9.9m in length and 5.9m on the beam.  It is built of solid wood and marine plywood and sheathed in biaxial glass fibre cloth impregnated with West-system epoxy resin.  The performance aspect of the boat comes from having daggerboards (rather than low aspect ratio keels), outboard motors for auxiliary power (rather than two inboard engines) and laminated tri-radial sails including a drifter (on a bowsprit) and a spinnaker.
