What guests are saying.

Great service David Hepburn Tortola
We had a staff of 4 on our Lefkada Floatilla. Phoebe was an amazing organizer and a great person to have leading the social aspect of our flotilla. She was bubbly and fun to be around and encouraging. Tom was our handyman and helped my wife and I a ton with our boat and spent extra time explaining things around our boat. He spent just as much time with all the other boats making sure everything was in working order. Matt was our captain and it was very obvious he had a lot of experience. He helped us, without making us feel dumb. He is kind and goes out of his way to make us feel safe and know the plan. Manu was the new guy on the flotilla staff and had a great attitude and a wealth of experience as well. He spent extra time with our boat explaining navigation and other techniques to sailing. His warm smile is contagious. As you can see, we had an incredible staff that all worked well together. Thank you for a great week. Otto V Otto Voettiner Lefkas
I’ve sailed with Sunsail/Moorings many times. This was a great experience. Robert William Byren Tortola

The Best Yacht Charters You Can Book Around the World

Whether you’re looking for seven decks of entertainment, a family-friendly trip, or a diving-focused Caribbean voyage, you’ll find it here.

yacht adventure travel

There are few experiences as luxurious and awe-inspiring as a yacht charter . You can explore the world at your leisure, spend quality time with friends and family in an intimate setting, and the service is second to none. We've rounded up the most exceptional new yacht charters to book around the world. They're sure to inspire your next voyage, whether you want to relax along the Amalfi Coast or explore remote corners of the globe.

In the yachting world, Loon is known for an exceptional array of water toys — perhaps the best in her class. There's a FunAir inflatable slide that goes from the third deck straight into the ocean, an in-water pool, and a luxurious 43-foot Everglades tender. You can hop on paddleboards, sea kayaks, Waverunners, or a Seabob to explore nearby islands and coves.

The adventurous can try kite surfing or Lift e-Foil surfboards, which seems effortless when you watch the crew fly past, but is actually quite challenging. Loon is also a scuba diver's dream. The crew has several master divers and dive instructors who can take you out each morning, and they have all of the equipment you need onboard. They can also certify new divers during the trip.

The 180-foot yacht has a staggering 1,100 gross tons of living space, elegant design, and an amiable and attentive crew. Loon has two master staterooms, including a unique one on the upper deck. It has wraparound windows that offer unparalleled views of the surroundings. There are two salons, including one with recliners and a projector for movie night, plenty of spaces for dining alfresco, and an oversized infinity-edge Jacuzzi with a wet bar nearby. Fancy a workout? Loon has a treadmill, exercise bike, rowing machine, and free weights in the beach club. You'll be hard-pressed to find better workout views than this.

The crew is absolutely lovely and specializes in setting up unique experiences. You might have a pizza night on board, a barbecue on a private beach, or sundowners at the Instagram-famous Loon Bar. The crew will even take you to a picture-perfect sandbar and serve you drinks as you loll in the warm water.

Loon is available for charter from IYC in the Bahamas, Caribbean, and Bermuda during the winter months and in the Mediterranean in the summer months. Rates begin at $325,000 a week plus expenses.

Nansen Explorer

For the ultimate Antarctica adventure, you can't beat a voyage aboard Nansen Explorer . This former research vessel has all of the technical features needed to safely explore one of the world's most remote and dramatic landscapes and, thanks to a retrofit in 2021, an ultra-luxe interior design that wouldn't look out of place in St. Tropez. For exploration, Nansen Explorer has an Ice-1A classed 236-foot hull and an ice-experienced captain and bridge team, which means she can go deeper into the ice than other polar-classed superyachts. There's a heli-deck with onboard fueling capabilities, so you can see the vast landscape from the sky, or even go heli-skiing. There are plenty of toys that allow you to get up close and personal with wildlife and nature, including kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, dive equipment, and Zodiacs.

The interiors are so stylish, modern, and well-appointed that you'll forget you're in the middle of Antarctica rather than at a swanky hotel. The ship originally accommodated 60 passengers, but now it holds just 12 guests in seven cabins, including an owner's suite and a VIP suite. Each cabin has large windows that showcase the stunning vistas outside the ship. The sumptuous Scandanavian-inspired decor features shades of grey and white, which reflect the surrounding environment. There's a cozy lounge with a bar and a fireplace, perfect for warming up after an excursion to see penguins or whales.

Nansen Explorer is available for charter from Plan South America in Antarctica. Rates begin at $340,000 a week and are all-inclusive.

Yachting in French Polynesia is always a blissful experience, but Dardanella takes relaxation to the next level with bespoke, wellness-focused charters planned by onboard wellbeing facilitator Ayumi Gallagher. The wellness experience is all-encompassing, including fresh, detoxifying food, mindfulness workshops, yoga sessions, Pilates, meditation, and massages alongside traditional yacht activities, like diving, surfing, and tender safaris exploring the pristine waters and nature of French Polynesia. The captain is also a qualified marine biologist and ecologist, so he's the perfect person to show you this unique environment. There are two dive instructors, 12 sets of dive gear, a Nitrox dive compressor, and underwater photography equipment, so you can capture the beauty underwater, too. As an expedition yacht, Dardanella is well-suited for exploring remote destinations. The 121-foot yacht was refit in 2018 and has five luxurious cabins.

Dardanella is available for charter from 37south in French Polynesia. Rates begin at $100,000 a week plus expenses.

With seven decks, there's something for everyone aboard Wheels . This massive yet elegant yacht measures 249 feet, weighs almost 2,000 gross tons, and has lots of standout amenities including a spacious cinema for eight guests, a huge aquarium, massage room with a dedicated onboard masseuse, air-conditioned gym, and the main salon converts to a disco complete with lights and a smoke machine for those late-night dance parties. The split-level master suite has panoramic views, a study, and plenty of space, and there are four spacious guest suites on the main deck. Outside, there are plenty of relaxation areas, including sunpads, a hot tub, several dining areas and bars, and an enviable water sports area with two Jet Skis, four wave runners, three seabobs, a luxurious tender, and plenty more toys. The crew is very active and can teach you to wakeboard, kitesurf, sail the new Hobie cat catamaran, or scuba dive. They can also lead yoga and fitness classes.

Wheels is available for charter from Fraser Yachts in the Caribbean. Rates begin at $680,000 a week plus expenses.

It's not uncommon for yacht charterers to "upgrade" their yachts year after year, chasing newer and bigger boats, which is makes Big Sky 's number of repeat bookings even more impressive. The 157-foot yacht has been a charter favorite since 2010, and she recently underwent a refit leaving her in immaculate condition. Big Sky can accommodate 10 guests in five staterooms, including a full-beam master that spans the width of the yacht, and there's plenty of room onboard to relax, including the main salon with large windows and a state-of-the-art TV system. The sky lounge is perfect for entertaining — it has an onyx bar and sliding windows that make you feel as if you are outside. Of course, if you do want to relax outdoors, there are three teak decks with space for dining and a large sundeck with a Jacuzzi, sun pads, couches, and a bar.

Big Sky is available for charter from Northrop & Johnson in the Bahamas. Rates begin at $180,000 a week plus expenses.

This glamorous new superyacht caused quite a stir when she debuted at the Monaco Yacht Show in September 2021. It's rare for a brand-new superyacht of this size to be available immediately for charter, so book your trip on Tatiana early. This 263-foot yacht can accommodate up to 12 guests, who are guaranteed impeccable service from the 20 crew members. She has a great selection of water accoutrements and a stunning design with a large amount of interior space, including a deck dedicated to the owner's suite. There are also two VIP staterooms, four double cabins, and a twin cabin. While away any rainy days in the movie room or shooting some pool. Tatiana also has a fabulous beach club with a large bathing platform, bar, and outdoor lounge.

Tatiana is available for charter from IYC in the Bahamas, Caribbean, and Bermuda during the winter months and in the Mediterranean in the summer months. Rates begin at €775,000 a week plus expenses.

Nour El Nil Meroe

Step back in time aboard Nour El Nil Meroe , a traditionally inspired Egyptian yacht full of modern amenities and luxurious design. Meroe is available for charter through Black Tomato, a top luxury travel company known for its expertly curated trips with exclusive experiences and a focus on local culture. Meroe is styled like a classic dahabiya boat, with authentic decor featuring whitewashed walls and linens alongside Parisian decor details. The VIP cabins have floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the Nile — we can't think of a more fabulous way to have breakfast in bed — while the other cabins have large windows. The shaded roof terrace has plenty of spots for lounging and dining alfresco, and there's a cheery indoor salon with red-and-white striped decor and cozy couches. On your charter, you'll slowly sail down the Nile River from Luxor to Aswan. You can charter just the yacht voyage or book the Ultimate Egypt trip , which includes adventures on land as well as the yacht charter (think: private tours of the pyramids, exploring temples, or taking a jeep safari around Siwa).

El Nil and the Ultimate Egypt trip can be booked through Black Tomato . Rates begin at $5,800 a person.

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

One of 2022's most anticipated travel launches is the new The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection . While this is technically a small-ship cruise, every element has been designed to make you feel as if you are aboard a superyacht. The fleet will ultimately have three custom-built yachts, each with 149 suites. However, in 2022, the collection will launch with their first luxury vessel: Evrima . The suites all have private terraces, which isn't something you can expect aboard even the largest superyacht. And of course, the amenities are incredible. It has a beautiful spa, stunning marina terrace (set up like a yacht beach club), an infinity-edge pool, a large gym, and plenty of entertainment. The dining options are seemingly endless, including the main restaurant, the Evrima Room, S.E.A., which features a menu by acclaimed chef Sven Elverfeld of Aqua, Talaat Nam, a Southeast Asian spot, and several casual options.

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection's inaugural voyage is set for May 2022 and pricing is dependent on the itinerary. Learn more about the trips here .

Which charter is right for you?

Whether you’re new to the sea, or a seasoned sailor, Poseidon Charters offers yacht charter and sailing tours for everyone. Read our handy guide on the difference of each of the charter types.

Yacht Charter

For the experienced sailor. A yacht charter or bareboat means you are renting a monuhull or catamaran, without professional crew and sailing it yourself. In most destinations, a sailing certificate is required to skipper a boat on your own itinerary.

Skippered Yacht Charter

For the novice sailor. Charter a yacht with a professional skipper who will sail the yacht and provide local knowledge. Choose a monohull or catamaran yacht then sit back and relax while the skipper provides stress free sailing.

Luxury Yacht Charter

For the discerning sailor or traveller. A private yacht charter of a luxury motor, catamaran or monohull yacht, with the highest standard of service. Depending on the size of yacht, the crew ranges from two to ten crew and includes a chef for a high-end yachting experience.

Cabin Charter

For the adventurous sailor. Cabin charters are sailing tours booked by the cabin on a shared yacht. There are professional crew onboard who are your guides, prepare the inclusive meals and sail the boat. Cabins on sailing tours are available on catamarans or monohull yachts dependent on destination.

The Aegean Adventure

For over 30 years we were lucky enough to be able to sail the wonderful Aegean Sea in Greece on our by the cabin tours around the Greek islands. We sailed with 1000's of guests from all over the world sharing our passion for Greece. Thank you to everyone who sailed with us over the last 30 years you have made Poseidon Charters what it is today. In 2022 we Poseidon Charters decided to stop offering our cabin charter in Greece and now focuses on offering yachts with crew. Greece is still our number one destination of course, so why not take a look at which option is best for your next sailing vacation.

Poseidon Charters has just returned from Greece where we attended the Eastern Mediterranean Yacht Show - EMMYS on the island of Poros.

It's always best to hear from what our clients have to say about their vacation than it is for us to describe it.

New Luxury Catamarans in Greece

Ten years ago, a harbour full of charter catamarans would have been a rare sight, but these days catamarans make up for over 75% of the boats in the beautiful tiny Greek harbours each evening.

A Galileo ship cruising around Greece

Small Ship Adventure Cruising

  • Ways to travel

Forget shuffleboard and cabaret—adventure cruising is all about the destination.

Cruising is an adventure in itself, but the beauty of travelling on a small ship with less than 50 passengers means the real fun begins when we pull into port or drop anchor at an island. It means you'll get to know the locals, rather than outnumber them. You'll still be looked after by your crew and get to relax on the deck, but you'll also get to kayak along the rivers of  Krka National Park , explore Montenegro ’s surprising fjordic landscapes, or snorkel with giant  Galapagos tortoises . It's about going where the big ships can't so you can swim in hidden coves, buy fish at local markets to barbeque for dinner, and wander through little Croatian laneways with your leader. This is cruising—Intrepid style.

Why choose Intrepid

A small ship

Small ships, small groups

With fewer than 36 passengers on every ship, our groups are the perfect size for really getting to know your fellow travellers. Smaller groups mean more personalised service, like one-on-one chats with your leader about history, culture and food, or your favourite beer handed to you by the bar manager at the end of the day.

A cruise captain

Specialised service

We’re right there with you to ensure your adventure is memorable for all the right reasons. Our expert local leaders facilitate incredible land experiences, while the ship’s friendly crew make sure you have everything you need – from a room that’s sparkling clean to a glass of sparkling wine – to enjoy your time on board.

A plate of fish

Dining with a local twist

Whether it’s a dining alfresco on the deck at sunset, enjoying the catch-of-the day cooked up by your onboard chef or sitting down for a gourmet breakfast every morning, our culinary experiences are designed to complement your journey and help you create memories you’ll savour forever – both on and off the boat.

A snorkel and mask

Cruise the seas less travelled

Our small ships give you access to those out-of-the-way spots the big ships can’t reach. We’ll show you the guidebook favourites from a new perspective, then cruise away from the crowds so you can stroll through seaside villages, swim in hidden coves, and get a real taste of what life is like for the locals.

A bed

A floating boutique hotel

Our ships combine all the comforts and personality of a boutique hotel with the freedom of the open water. Relax in your well-appointed cabin and wake to a different outlook each morning. Enjoy panoramic views from the sun deck, spend time in comfortable lounges and dining rooms, or dine al fresco under the stars.

Highlights of small ship Adventure Cruising

Sunset over Rab Island, Croatia

Dig into Croatia’s coast

There’s a reason Croatia ’s been crowned the darling of Europe! Cruise through the pristine waters of the Adriatic and taste the best of the country’s bountiful coastline. Visit rolling vineyards for wine tastings, dine on barbecue dinners on the deck of your ship, sample locally produced honey on a Croatian farm and stroll through fragrant fields of lavender. Detour into Bosnia and Herzegovina where you’ll pop into a local coffee shop to see how Bosnian coffee is made and try some yourself.

A land iguana in the Galapagos

Go wild in the Galapagos

When we say go wild, we really mean it. Located just off Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands are a natural playground for wildlife lovers with over 9000 species to discover. Where else can you chill on the beach with a seal or kayak alongside a group of inquisitive penguins? Here, you'll snorkel in shallow coves teeming with green turtles, golden cow-nose rays and Galapagos sharks. Whether you cruise around the central, southern or western islands, you'll be well placed to have unforgettable wildlife encounters on and off the water.

Meet the fleet

Whether it’s cruising along in a motor sailer or a state-of-the-art mega-yacht, our cruising vessels are built for style, comfort and adventure. Each ship features 4-star accommodation with well-appointed interiors including spacious cabins and sundecks.

Adventure Cruising FAQs

What type of ship will i be on.

Our Adventure Cruising trips operate on a Motor Yacht that carries between 16-36 passengers, and the primary propulsion method is motorised. The decor varies between ships with some contemporary and some more traditional in their styling.

View all ships

What are the cabins like? Why are they different prices?

All cabins are air-conditioned and our ship generators provide an electric current of 220v. Cabins are equipped with European type plugs so please remember to bring an adaptor if necessary.

Please be aware that cabins are compact in size, with wardrobe and storage space also compact. All cabins on all ships have private bathrooms with hairdryers and come with some toiletries such as shampoo and shower gel. A safe and minibar (containing water) are in every cabin. Pricing depends on the cabin type - similar to a hotel, some cabins offer superior views, larger windows/portholes and larger or additional living space. You can view cabin types on our ships  page.

How long will be spent between sailing and port?

As much as possible, most relocation sailing will take place at night, allowing for more time to be spent at port and exploring. The majority of itineraries have at least one port stop or swim stop every day. In places of particular interest the ship will moor all day, allowing additional time for shore excursions and off-ship activities. It’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with the trip itinerary in order to be aware of what time is scheduled at port and what excursions are on offer. However, please be aware that weather conditions may prompt a change to published itineraries.

How much time will I have on shore at each stop?

The amount of time you spend ashore at each stop will vary depending on the stop and each individual itinerary. It is not always possible to give accurate arrival and departure times from each port. Travelling on a small ship means we are more affected by changes to the winds and tides. If conditions are in our favour we may make excellent time and arrive in port earlier than expected. But if conditions are against us, it may take longer to reach our next stop. One of the charms of small ship cruising is letting nature be part of your journey.

How accessible are the ships?

It’s important to be aware that none of the ships have lifts, and moving between decks will involve climbing fairly steep stairways. To disembark the ship in port, you will need to walk down a narrow gangway lowered to the dock. It’s important to be aware that none of the ships have lifts and moving between decks will involve climbing fairly steep stairways. To disembark the ship in port, you will need to walk down a narrow gangway lowered to the dock. On our Croatian cruises, you will usually dock at all ports, and tenders (small dinghies) are rarely used. On our Galapagos cruises, we use zodiacs to transport you between the boat and land. You will need to be comfortable getting in and out of the zodiacs to enjoy all the included activities throughout the itinerary. Our crew are always at hand to assist you.

Will I get seasick?

How often the ship sails in open waters depends on the itinerary. The itineraries that sail along the coast should experience sheltered conditions on most days, but those that sail between islands will cross open waters and may sail through heavier seas. Unless you are certain that you’re impervious to seasickness, it is necessary to come prepared with precautionary medication or other methods of combatting seasickness. Please be aware that there are no doctors aboard the ships.

Who will I be travelling with?

Our Adventure Cruises in the Galapagos have a maximum of 16 passengers and Croatia cruises have a maximum of 36 passengers.

What if I’m travelling solo?

On all our Intrepid itineraries, if you’re travelling solo, it is possible to share a twin share cabin with another passenger of the same gender, depending on availability. If you would like your own cabin, you can choose to pay a single supplement and receive a cabin to yourself.

What language is spoken on the ship?

The language on board is English (with fluent staff).

Is the itinerary always the same?

By its nature, all travel by sea is subject to the weather, winds, and tides. Occasionally the order in which we visit destinations may need to change to accommodate weather conditions and, sometimes, other ports may be substituted. Safety is always our first priority. All ships are operated by an experienced captain and crew.

What will the weather be like?

For the comfort and pleasure of our guests, our itineraries generally follow warm rather than hot weather patterns. The world's climate being at times unpredictable, our small ships are seldom far from a sheltered bay or port.

What is the official currency on board?

On our Croatia cruises, the Euro is the official currency on board. On our Galapagos Islands cruises, USD is the official currency onboard.  There is an optional credit system for expenses on board that may be paid/settled at the end of the cruise. Credit card payment is not always accepted on board. Please refer to the essential trip information” for further information

What if I have dietary requirements?

Most dietary requirements can be catered for on all ships, except for kosher and halal. Please advise us at the time of booking and we will do all that we can.

Are alcoholic drinks available on board?

Alcoholic drinks are available on all ships and are reasonably priced. For example, EUR5 for the cocktail of the day or EUR3.50 for a glass of wine. The bar runs on a chit system where you sign for drinks as you purchase them, with the amount added to your on-board account. This account is settled at the end of the voyage.

Is there a dress code on board?

Dress aboard the boat is very casual – it is a holiday after all. However, you may wish to bring a smarter outfit, such as a sundress or a shirt with a collar, for the final night’s Captain’s Dinner or if you plan to eat off the ship in port.

Is there Internet available on board?

Wifi is available on our ships at an additional cost. Please note, it may be unavailable in more remote locations or when sailing.

Can I combine an Adventure Cruise with another land tour?

Yes definitely, and it's a popular option for many. While dates might not always align perfectly, there are plenty of options like day tours  to bridge the time between the tours. Contact us or your local travel agent to find out more.

Are the Adventure Cruises guaranteed departures?

If you've found a tour you like, we can request space and confirm availability within 2-4 days.  Once availability is confirmed, a deposit is required within 7 days.  We suggest not booking other things like flights until availability is confirmed.

Once the space is confirmed by our local team and your deposit has been paid, your tour is guaranteed to depart - meaning you can book your airfares and additional accommodation with confidence. Please note that like all of our tours, this is subject to our regular booking conditions.

Why are the cabins different prices?

Pricing depends on the cabin type. Similar to how hotel room pricing works, some cabins offer superior views, larger windows/portholes and larger or additional living space. You can view cabin types on our ships  page. Contact us  to find out more

Are flights included?

While International flights aren't included in the tour cost, we can assist with booking these. Our partnerships with the major airlines mean we can get you the best price on flights for your intended travel dates. Sometimes it can be challenging organising flights. Some destinations are harder to get to than others, and we know it can be tricky trying to negotiate dates, transfers and prices. So speak to us  about how we can get you there easier.

Can you book additional accommodation, day tours and transfers?

Yes, we can generally assist with all of this when you're ready to book your trip. Contact us  to find out more.

Can I go swimming from the ship?

Of course! All ships have a swimming platform which is usually located at the back of the ship. The crew will always be present to monitor the safety of swimmers, watching either from the ship or a small zodiac safety boat. Additional towels are available during swim stops. All ships are equipped with snorkelling equipment that you are free to use. Some ships also offer kayaks and stand-up paddleboards for use at swim stops.

What is included in my cruise cost?

We include: a minimum of two meals daily, activities and land excursions (as per the itinerary), Comfortable accommodation on the boat, all port fees, services of local tour leaders, airport arrival transfer, drinking water, 24-hour coffee station with fruit and snacks, and snorkelling equipment. Some trips have kayaks and stand-up paddleboards available for use.

What is not included in my cruise cost?

We do not include: International flights, travel insurance, discretionary tips for leaders and crew, some meals, onboard purchases (such as beverages), hotel-to-port transfer (if arriving prior to the day of embarkation), airport departure transfer (unless pre-booked), any additional hotel accommodation not outlined in trip itinerary, personal expenses.

Are tips included in the price?

Tips for all crew and services are at your discretion

Where can I find the joining point/hotel details for my trip?

Your agent or sales representative will provide you with all the necessary joining point details once you have booked, along with other essential trip information. This information can also be found on the web page for your trip – scroll down past the itinerary until you see the Essential Trip Information link.

The greatest adventures on surf

No matter how far inland we live, there’s something about the sea that calls to us. It’s wide. It’s deep. It’s blue. It’s a canvas upon which we can paint adventures we otherwise can’t do on dry land. Okay, so you probably don’t have your own private yacht waiting to spirit you away to distant shores. But we do. Plenty of ‘em. (And a couple of catamarans, too.) Climb aboard and explore the Greek Islands, the Turquoise Coast, the Adriatic, the Andaman Sea, and other exotic places with a small group of fellow adventurers and a skipper who knows your destination’s every isolated cove, pristine beach, and secluded coastal village. Billions of years ago, we emerged from the sea. Isn’t it time you went back?

Fishing, diving, hiking… taking a leisurely stroll to the 19 th hole. Most of us have an outdoor pursuit that we wish we could give more time to.

Yet when vacation time rolls around, we inevitably find ourselves taken further from the activities which fuel our souls. Sure, lying on the beach is great, but what if you crave a little adventure alongside it? This is where an adventure yacht charter takes centre stage.

A crewed yacht charter offers unparalleled relaxation and luxury, perfect for those who wish to kick back and worry about nothing for a week or so. However, as well as being your floating home-from-home, your charter yacht is also the perfect means of trying all manner of outdoor activities – anywhere in the world.

After a morning dive, an afternoon fishing, or a full day of exploring coves – packing up and heading back to your accommodation is never enjoyable. When your accommodation is moored only metres away, and there is delicious fresh food awaiting you – it’s a totally different story.

A fun-packed day of exhilarating activity can certainly revive the mind, but can leave your body feeling in need of some TLC. So why not opt for a yacht with on-board hot tub, sauna and steam shower, to relieve your aching muscles? Your crew could even arrange a masseur to come aboard and work on any knots.

Needless to say, if you have even a passing interest in watersports, a crewed yacht charter offers everything you could need – and more. Your captain can expertly guide you to the next scuba spots, to check out the local wildlife. Avoid the crowds and bypass the uncomfortable transfers, weighed down with your equipment. Your private tender will zip you straight to the heart of the action in a matter of moments.

Keen divers won’t want to miss the opportunity to see the stunning, often deserted, islands of Raja Ampat in Indonesia. The diversity of vibrant sealife here is astounding. A trip to land may also tempt you, with hiking and nature walks promising incredible scenery.

Many divers will have the Great Barrier Reef on their bucket lists. Imagine waking up in your sumptuous cabin, enjoying a freshly prepared breakfast on deck, then slipping straight into the water to marvel at the wildlife.

Perhaps you’ve heard of the stunning depths of the Blue Hole in Belize. What you may not realise is that there are many other islands nearby, awaiting exploration. Many charter crews are also dive instructors or enthusiasts, so they can plot the perfect course for a dream day of diving. They will also be able to encourage and instruct those who are new to the diving world.

Charter yachts commonly come with dive equipment on board as standard, to save the rigmarole of picking up and transporting equipment. If this isn’t the case, it can easily be arranged to be ready on board for your arrival.

belize blue hole yacht charter

If your idea of the perfect day is catching some waves, consider chartering in Fiji or Costa Rica. World-renowned surfing awaits you, and there’s no need to miss any of the action. Your crew will advise on the best surf spots, and can take you straight to the biggest breaks on the tender. Your yacht will be fully decked with boards and wetsuits, if you’d prefer not to travel with your own.

Aruba and the Dominican Republic are perfect charter areas for kite-surfers. Meanwhile, paddle boarding on the warm, calm waters of the British Virgin Islands is always a dream.

Hike and Ski

Charter vacations are not just for the underwater adventurers  Some activities on terra-firma are best accessed by boat. Ice-hiking under the guidance of your crew in Antarctica, is an experience you’ll never forget. Climbing, skiing, and seeing the fjords backlit by the Northern Lights are all part of a charter in Northern Norway. What better way to warm up than fresh tea and cake from the panoramic views of the heated saloon?

If your idea of an adventure vacation is more of an expedition of discovery, we’ve got that covered too. Play explorer for a week, on a refitted research yacht. Head deep underwater on the submarine, and then examine your findings in the on-board research lab. This charter will connect you to nature on a whole different level.

yacht charter jacuzzi helipad

Follow the billfish circuit in The Bahamas or cast off in Costa Rica and Panama, with many larger yachts offering their own sportfish boat as part of the package. And what better way to visit the best Caribbean golf courses in one trip than sailing to them by yacht?

Authentically Small Cruises

We emphatically believe that the core definition of a small ship cruise is one where guests can get off the ship away from port. While some may consider a ship with 500 or even 1,000 guests small, in reality, the logistics of operating off-vessel activities like hiking, kayaking and snorkeling require that the ship be under 250 guests.

Adventure Cruises

While every small ship cruise has a heavy dose of adventure, a growing segment can be called adventure cruises. The hallmark of an adventure cruise is a focus on off-vessel activities such as hiking, kayaking, snorkeling, stand-up paddleboarding, camping, diving and more, with twice daily excursions. Actively explore off the ship by day in the company of expert naturalist guides. Each evening, return to your small ship for a hot shower, a glass of wine with a delicious meal and a comfortable cabin while the ship cruises to a new active location.

Expedition Cruises

Expedition cruises focus on the exploration of remote wilderness. An expedition is defined as a journey or voyage undertaken by a group of people with a particular purpose. The hallmark of an expedition cruise is a sense of exploration and scientific learning. Purpose-built expedition ships bring you to some of the most remote and pristine places on Earth. Journeys like North Pole expeditions , Falkland Islands & South Georgia cruises and Northwest Passage voyages are all examples of this growing segment of small ship cruising.

Small Luxury Cruises

If you’re looking for top-tier service, amenities and fine dining while aboard, let us point you to the best in luxury small ship cruises. Small luxury cruise ships feature suites that are often larger than other small boats, and include private balconies or floor-to-ceiling ocean views. Add to that top-rated naturalist guides with high crew-to-guest ratios and you are set up for a premium sailing experience. View our curated Galapagos luxury cruises , Alaska luxury cruises and Antarctica luxury cruises pages for an example of what to expect in our most popular destinations.

Small Ship Cruise FAQ

Whether you are new to small boat cruising or a small-ship veteran seeking to just learn more, we’ve compiled our most frequently asked questions here to inform and inspire as you explore this incredible way to travel. Read this small ship cruise FAQ to find out if your burning question is a common one, or contact one of our adventure cruise specialists anytime to ask an expert direct about cruises on small ships.

For us, the sweet spot for a small ship cruise is around 8 to 250 passengers to maintain what we feel is the true hallmark of small ship cruising: active, immersive, off-the-ship, off-the-grid travel.

Depends on who you ask, and who is traveling. We sure think so since small ships connect you with the destination better than larger ships. To learn more and find out what size ship is best for you, read our Big Ship vs. Small Ship: What Is the Difference?

Since word “best” is entirely subjective to each individual traveler’s style, amenity needs, travel group and activity level, let our experts help you narrow down the many small cruise ships sailing today. Any ship you see on the AdventureSmith Explorations website has been vetted and tested, and our team is adept at matchmaking travelers to their own “best” ship. If you want some suggestions, see the Romantic Cruises by Small Ship and our curated pages for luxury ships: Galapagos luxury cruises , Alaska luxury cruises and Antarctica luxury cruises .

Unlike larger ship cruise lines that sail worldwide, many small ship cruise lines have carved out a niche in their destination. Each of the small ship cruise lines has its own style of travel that’s best for different travelers. For instance, UnCruise Adventures offers more active adventure than most, while Lindblad Expeditions has a reputation for superior expedition leaders, many affiliated with National Geographic. Quark Expeditions has a long history of polar expeditions and Quasar Expeditions has a penchant for historic yachts in the Galapagos Islands. We work with many of the biggest and best companies in small ship cruising, as well as many smaller family-owned-and-operated vessels that are off the radar of most travelers. View our selection of the best small ship cruise lines hand picked by our experts. We pride ourselves on suggesting the best small ship cruise lines for you.

Small ship cruise travelers are interesting, engaged, active and educated people seeking meaningful up-close encounters with the wonders of nature and culture, just like you. From couples to families to solo travelers, small cruise passengers are savvy travelers who have done the research and are seeking to escape the mass tourism market for something more sustainable and rooted in a destination. They want to experience a place, not just see it!

Most likely not. We have found over the years that travelers who find and book cruises on small ships tend to be likeminded. You’ve done a lot of research to get to this point, dismissing large ships, amusement parks and resort hotels. Most other travelers have done similar research and ended up at the same conclusion: that small boat cruises suit them. Guest compatibility typically comes naturally, and you’re off the ship much more than a larger cruise ship itinerary.

Absolutely! The level of family friendliness depends on the vessel, destination and small ship cruise line, but there are lots of options to cruise with children and teenagers worldwide. We generally suggest adventure cruises for kids age six or older. Read more about our family cruises , including testimonials from our family travelers and further resources for booking a family adventure cruise.

Nearly all small ship cruise lines we partner with have at least one naturalist guide aboard, but guide counts will naturally increase with the passenger count. If you have a particular learning topic of interest, look for themed departures that bring aboard guest hosts and special programming on photography, history, marine biology, food/wine or wellness. Or look to National Geographic branded ships that bring aboard professors, authors, scientists, researchers, photographers and expedition crew that are experts in their fields.

While most small ship cruises travel close to shore or in protected waters where seasickness is not an issue, some ocean-going expedition cruises can encounter rough seas. Ocean conditions vary widely depending on the destination, season, weather, type of ship, route and many other factors. AdventureSmith’s unbiased staff experts can help you to determine if a particular small cruise itinerary is right for you, and savvy travelers can educate themselves on ways to combat seasickness by reading our comprehensive guide on How to Prevent & Treat Seasickness . Enjoying the ocean view with your eye on the horizon is one of the best tips!

Yes! We agree that the best type of small ship cruise review is a personal referral. Ask us to put you in touch with someone who has traveled to your destination with similar interests as you, or aboard the small boat cruise you are inquiring about. You can also read reviews on our trip pages; simply look for the Testimonials and Expert Review sections.

The best time to take cruises on small ships all depends on where in the world you want to go! Our team has compiled a Small Ship Cruise Calendar to assist travelers in seeing the bigger timing picture for some of our most popular destinations. If your travel dates are flexible, consider a region’s seasonality. Prices can vary considerably from the peak season, so look at early or late seasons for the most affordable pricing. River cruises can often have high- and low-water seasons you can consider. Or you may choose based on particular interest like the best time to view whales, when baby penguins are hatching or to align with the warmest water temperatures for snorkeling and swimming. View our Small Ship Cruise Guide resources for more information and inspiration by destination.

All small ship adventure cruises include off-vessel excursions with a focus on exploring the environment up close and viewing wildlife. Many of our cruise itineraries include guided light hiking and easy sea kayaking or snorkeling, and sometimes alternative activities such as stand-up paddleboarding, camping, scuba diving, skiing and even river rafting. Each and every activity is optional, and the naturalist/guides aboard every ship will help passengers to determine if an activity or excursion is right for them. A fun part of the AdventureSmith booking process is that we take your activity level into consideration before you go; our team will assess your activity interests and match you with the best adventure cruise for your travel style.

Yes, similar to traditional larger-ship cruises, you can simply book an individual cabin aboard a small ship. In fact, 75% of our travelers choose to book individual cabins this way: on a set departure. We also connect travelers in groups as small as 8 guests with charter cruises . Choose this charter option to book the entire ship and help set its route and onboard programming for the duration of your trip. Our most popular destinations for chartering your own ship include Galapagos Islands yacht charters , Mediterranean yacht charters and Alaska yacht charters .

In general, small ship cruises cost more than their big-ship cruise counterparts, but the experience is so inclusive and immersive that the dividends to you are much greater and the total costs can end up being comparable. Ultimately, how much a small cruise costs all depends on where you want to go, the size of the vessel you are on and its amenities. All cruise and land tour pricing listed on the AdventureSmith Explorations website is the cost per person , in USD, and our rates depending on the destination start at around $200-$500 per day. This price often varies based on how many persons are sharing the cabin, transfer or tour, as well as any small ship cruise deals to factor in.

Just like a hotel room, you can expect to pay more to book a cabin as a single traveler. But there are exceptions. Some small ships offer dedicated single cabins, but most ships instead have double-occupancy cabins that can be booked for dedicated single-use with a single supplement charge. This supplement is essentially a a discount on paying for the full double-occupancy cabin. In many destinations, there is the possibility of waiving the single supplement by agreeing to a “cabin share,” wherein you are paired with a fellow traveler of the same gender in a cabin. This is especially popular on Antarctica cruises , where you will often find many cabin and pricing options for single travelers.

Common inclusions with a small cruise cabin fare are onboard meals and guided activities during the itinerary. Common exclusions from the cabin fare are airfare (international or domestic), gratuities, alcoholic beverages and insurance of any kind. But there are exceptions to each of these. For example, many of our small boat cruises have included alcoholic beverages, and some of our Mediterranean cruises have nights free at ports of call so you can dine on your own off-ship. Included and excluded services vary from cruise to cruise, and are always listed in the “DETAILS” section of each itinerary listed on our website. These can be discussed further with your AdventureSmith Specialist upon booking.

Hear About Small Cruises from Our Travelers

We loved the small ship experience, with onboard staff accommodating our group's differing ages and needs. We booked our trip through AdventureSmith after reading online evaluations. So glad we did.

Everything more than met expectations - the boat was wonderful, the wildlife was abundant, the naturalists and crew were friendly and knowledgeable, and we saw penguins swimming, calling, and even mating!

That was easily one of the best vacations I've ever had. Seeing wildlife was really cool. We enjoyed seeing Sawyer Glacier, Baird Glacier, hiking and many things we would never have seen on a big cruise ship.

We loved everything about our trip. Opatija was our favorite. Every island on the cruise was amazing. We loved them all. We've always wanted to experience Croatia. This was a perfect way to see some much of it.

We most enjoyed flying over the Drake Passage - left more time to enjoy Antarctica. We chose a small vessel with only 68 passengers. It was an amazing experience, and I really liked being on a smaller vessel.

The trip was awesome. When I started looking at cruises, I couldn't get the idea of the small boat and personal service out of my mind. It was well worth the extra money. So glad we didn't go on a big ship.

Please note: The primary ship(s) operating the mentioned itinerary can change from year to year, so the ship this guest cruised on may no longer be sailing this exact route.

We booked our trip through AdventureSmith after reading online evaluations. So glad we did. This was our first cruise and we wondered about booking directly through an operator versus involving an additional layer with AdventureSmith. We would do it again, as we found AdventureSmith to be definitely value added in every way. Our Adventure Specialist was endlessly helpful and patient, booking the cruise for 8 people ages 6 to 73, coming from 3 different locations, and required vegetarian and gluten free menus for several.

We loved the small ship experience, with onboard staff accommodating our group's differing ages and needs. Glaciers, Zodiacs among sea lions and eagles, whale viewing, pilot whales and great naturalists all were special.

Our fellow passengers were personable and well matched. I think the nature of the trip, with Nat Geo, attracts passengers with similar interests very well, so the group was simpatico. There were also several other children in the mix which was good for the kids in our group.

Accommodations Review

The Sea Bird is a small ship, so naturally accommodations were small, but we enjoyed the limited number of passengers and ability to know crew and staff.

Meals Review

Good variety and accommodation for special food needs of the vegetarians, small child and gluten free passengers in our group.

Crew & Guides Review

Rab, the group leader, was engaging, knowledgeable and always enthusiastic. He also was excellent at addressing individual requests. We enjoyed Kyle, the bartender, who was always welcoming and especially attentive to the 6 and 8-year-olds on our trip. The naturalists Andy and Jared were outstanding both in their expertise and their willingness to socialize with guests and answer all questions.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

Our Adventure Specialist was exceptionally helpful during our rather more complicated preparations involving travelers from 3 locations and various ages and special needs. She was always available for any questions. She also successfully managed to have a lost item returned to us after the cruise. Any travel issues prior to departure were addressed by AdventureSmith expeditiously and knowledgeably. An A plus experience.

Traveler Advice

No kidding, you really do need the rubber boots! It is a temperate rain forest environment, so just bring the wet gear and know that rain or shine it will be a fabulous destination.

I brought my 11-year-old son on this trip because he had a rough year with his parents splitting up, and he has always had an obsession with penguins. Everything more than met expectations - the boat was wonderful, the wildlife was abundant, the naturalists and crew were friendly and knowledgeable, and we saw penguins swimming, calling, and even mating! My son has never learned to swim due to a severe fear of putting his face in the water, but he was so enamored of the islands that he was able to overcome his fear and learn to snorkel. Genovesa Island was a miracle of wildlife. Sea kayaking along the cliffs was wonderful, as we could see all the animals and the cliffs themselves were beautiful. Snorkeling with penguins, sea turtles, and sharks was amazing.

La Pinta was the perfect size and very comfortable. We chose La Pinta because of the size of the ship (not too big or too small), the itinerary (north islands), planned activities for kids, and the availability of a glass-bottom boat. Not a big fan of Quito, but that was a necessary stop. The recommended hotel in the old town area was wonderful.

Lots of options, all of them excellent. Staff worked very hard to accommodate my picky son's whims and were extremely respectful of my choice to be vegetarian.

The naturalists aboard La Pinta could not have been more professional or knowledgeable. We appreciated Paul sitting with us at lunch and getting to know us personally, and Dennis's enthusiasm about Charles Darwin was contagious. We enjoyed having several guides with different perspectives, but they were all phenomenal.

Nick M. was friendly, attentive, communicative, and very helpful. I handled much of it myself (transportation), but the portion handled by AdventureSmith all ran very smoothly, which was much appreciated.

Don't put it off - everyone tells me it's on their bucket list. My son wanted to see penguins, and I was not willing to travel to Antarctica so the Galapagos was the next best option.

  • La Pinta Galapagos Cruises

That was easily one of the best vacations I've ever had. Seeing wildlife was really cool. We enjoyed seeing Sawyer Glacier, Baird Glacier, hiking and many things we would never have seen on a big cruise ship. Snorkeling was a little disappointing, especially because we had to pay more for it. The visibility was not great and we really didn't see that much.

The rooms were really small but that was to be expected. The beds were comfortable and the rooms were clean.

The meals were excellent. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner were all included and we never left the table hungry.

Every crew member was professional, informative and fun. They were so knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions. They payed attention to what people wanted out of the trip. Bethany, Chris the bartender, Phil, Sarah and Paul took good care of us especially. Tucker who drove our skiff boat, the captain and the first mate were very informative as well.

Very informative. AdventureSmith helped us know what to expect and what we needed (and didn't need) to bring. Great trip and overall experience, I would recommend AdventureSmith to anyone looking for a vacation.

The ship was beautiful. Very comfortable. We loved being on a small ship. A small group and everyone just connected. We loved everyone on our ship.

Food was awesome. The only thing we think we'd liked to have improved, is more variety at breakfast. Maybe add some smoked salmon.

Josaphina was amazing. Great attitude, easy to understand and very knowledgeable.

Transportation Review

Picked as scheduled.

They gave us everything we needed to be prepared for our trip. Very helpful. Thank you for an awesome vacation.

We most enjoyed flying over the Drake Passage - left more time to enjoy Antarctica. Loved the colours of the ice, the penguins (not the smell!!), seals, whales and birds. We chose a small vessel with only 68 passengers. We chose the kayaking option, which was brilliant. It was an amazing experience, and I really liked being on a smaller vessel.

Comfortable 3 person cabin. Very clean.

Buffet style breakfast, lunch. Dinner served, 3 choices.

All staff on the boat were friendly, knowledgable, and helpful. All the other passengers were interesting and polite. Great fun!

Good advice was well presented. Any questions were answered promptly.

  • Magellan Explorer

The trip was awesome. [The experience we enjoyed the most was] the day we started seeing whales spouting in the distance and the captain stopped the boat for a few hours while we watched at least 2 dozen whales. One of the whales seemed to be putting a show on for us with dives and multiple tale waves over and over. This was a sunny day in Alaska, and they brought the happy hour out to the sundeck while we watched the whales.

Alaska has been somewhere we wanted to go for some time. When I started looking at cruises, I couldn't get the idea of the small boat and personal service out of my mind. It was well worth the extra money. So glad we didn't go on a big ship.

Our room was above the engine. We didn't let it bother us, but there was some noise. We chose the least expensive of cabins, so it is understandable. The accommodations are small in the cheaper cabins, but they cleaned them every day; we weren't in the rooms except to sleep. The vessel was awesome.

Nothing could be improved, the meals were awesome.

The enthusiasm, knowledge, and professionalism of the guides were all top notch.

What would your ultimate sailing adventure be? We have inspiration for once-in-a-lifetime trips with our 12 dream sailing experiences

yacht adventure travel

We’re all seeking experiences. Whether that’s taking on a sporting challenge, going on above-averagely-adventurous holidays, or learning a new hobby or skill, we live in an era where ‘doing’ is more important than ‘having’. It’s evidenced by the rise in everything from ultra marathons to immersive art exhibits to Duolingo.

A travel trends report by Mastercard in 2023 found spending on experiences was up 65% over the previous four years, while spending on ‘things’ had risen just 12% .

What’s more, it makes us happy: officially. A 20-year study by Dr Thomas Gilovich, a psychology professor at Cornell University, USA, came to the conclusion that buying possessions might bring temporary happiness, but it fades quickly. By contrast, experiences shape us – and they stay with us forever.

But if you could do anything, what would be your ‘bucket list’ sailing experience? We find inspiration in 12 great sailing adventures – some on your own yacht, some a world away…

1 Watch racing megastars

This year is set to be one of the biggest for competitive sailing: Paris 2024, for which the Olympic sailing regatta will be held in Marseilles; a packed summer in Barcelona ahead of October’s America’s Cup ; then in November the Vendée Globe sets off from Les Sables d’Olonne. With a bit of planning you could attend some of sailing’s biggest events from your own yacht.

Berths in Marina Marseille old harbour will be hard to come by, but close by is Les Îles archipelago, where Port du Frioul is just a ferry ride away. Along the coast Port de Bouc Plaisance and Port Sausset-les-Pins have train and bus links to Marseilles. Carry-le-Rouet is closer, though its marina is suitable for shallow draught yachts only.

When it comes to choosing America’s Cup accomodation , Barcelona’s Port Olimpic marina say they aren’t yet taking reservations, but have a list of those interested and plan to allocate spots closer to the Cup. Barcelona also has a handy coastal train that connects holiday towns such as Blanes, which has a marina, to the city.

In Les Sables d’Olonne, Port Olona, is unsurprisingly full: 40 IMOCAs need to squeeze in. But consider La Baule to the north and La Rochelle to the south. Both are a couple of hours away by train, but as the IMOCA fleet gathers weeks ahead of the start there will be plenty of opportunities to see these impressive machines up close.

2 Deliver barrels of grog

For a truly unique sailing experience, crew on a traditional sailing ship delivering cargo. Passages with open berths vary from a three-day hop transporting goods like Scottish whisky or French wines, to month-long adventures visiting multiple trading ports across Europe, or a transatlantic to collect Caribbean rum and coffee.

Expect to join a diverse, salty crew for some communal living and a degree of physical work, particularly when it comes to loading and unloading the cargo, but also to enjoy the chance to experience slow living, sailing with a true purpose, and learning traditional skills handling tall ships.

3 Sail across the famous Bay of Biscay

The Bay of Biscay has a fearsome reputation, hence most skippers looking to sail their own boats will aim to cross in summer, when there is a better chance of settled weather between May and August.

But for sailors looking to gain experience of bigger conditions, a skippered south-bound Biscay crossing can be a memorable way to make this right-of-passage crossing, and a valuable learning opportunity.

59° North and Rubicon3 both offer Biscay crossings during the ‘off’ season. This year 59° North will depart Plymouth in late September for Lagos, Portugal. Rubicon3 will be running a three-boat Biscay Masterclass, heading from Falmouth to Vigo, Spain, in October, with pre-departure workshops on heavy weather skills (last year included talks from ocean racers Mike Golding and Miranda Merron, and meteorologist Simon Rowell).

“Taking part in a training sail across the Bay of Biscay late in the season is a valuable opportunity for sailors to experience and learn how to handle heavy weather sailing. It’s something that many sailors seek, but few have the chance to practise in real-life conditions,” explains Rubicon3 founder Bruce Jacobs. “This experience is critical because it helps bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and the actual skills needed if you ever encounter heavy weather.”

Sailing Biscay: Top tips for a safe and smooth crossing of the notorious bay

Sailing from Annapolis to Iceland on the viking routes of old

Heavy, heavy fog blanketed the boat. We had a rotating watch standing on the bow looking for growlers. Everything, and…

Andy Schell, 59° North founder, says their Farr 65 Falken crossed Biscay in both March and September 2023. “Both offered pretty typical – read ‘heavy’ – conditions, though different. March had more heavy upwind conditions, with strong south-westerlies. September gave us a very good weather window and Falken had a heavy but mostly reaching and running passage, so it was much more comfortable.”

59° North always start their trips from the west – departing from Ireland or Plymouth. “I think the stereotypical ‘Biscay bashing’ happens most often to boats who are further inshore on the shallower continental shelf,” explains Schell. “You get this sort of worst-case scenario where cruisers who are new to offshore sailing want to go ‘offshore’ to get across Biscay, but don’t go far enough offshore to make it more manageable.”

Besides the confidence making the trip with an ocean-ready 60-footer can give, he says a westerly route offers several advantages: “easier wave action when or if the weather does pipe up; a lower risk of orcas further off the coast; and more time and sea room to heave-to when needed.”

The passage isn’t solely something to be endured, however, as crews leave an increasingly chilly Britain for some late season sun and warmth in southern Europe.

“The thought of sailing across Biscay terrified me and was far beyond what I felt capable of taking on,” says Anna Wenneker, from London, who crossed with Rubicon3. “I learned so much – be more worried about some things, and less worried about others – but I also just had a proper adventure. I usually charter a boat and have a lovely holiday, but I’ve been craving a proper sailing adventure and this was it.”

5 World’s most scenic beach clean

Kraken Travel also organises expeditions along the Helgeland coast, some of Norway’s most pristine waters – but with a twist. Run by SailNorge with Nordic Ocean Watch, the seven-night trip combines exploring stunning islands with a beach cleaning programme to help preserve the incredible ecosystem. Add archipelagos to navigate, the world’s only Arctic whisky distillery to sample, and Scandinavian saunas to enjoy, and it makes for a memorable cruise with a purpose.

“Over the past year, there has been an uptick in crew wanting to explore beyond their usual cruising grounds and get more out of their time on water,” observes Kraken Travel co-founder Mike Pickering.

“Using sailing to get closer to nature has become a common theme. There has been a real shift towards sailing holidays being more than just sailing.”

6 Cruise to a secret island

In an age where nearly the entire planet is mapped by satellite, the notion of stumbling on an undiscovered island seems destined to remain a fantasy. But there are still places in Europe where you’re likely to be the only yacht.

Despite lying midway between Madeira and Lanzarote, the Selvagem Islands are a small archipelago few cruisers have heard of. Nick Bubb, who cruised there with his family, was keen to visit the islands due to their biodiversity.

After picking up the sole mooring buoy in an anchorage to the south-west of Selvagem Grande, they met the island’s nature wardens (apply online in advance). “We had the most amazing few hours hiking among juvenile shearwaters and tracking the endemic Selvagem wall geckos. Our boys were also blown away to discover they were the only children to have landed on the islands all year.”

7 Learn how to foil

No matter how many times you’ve seen it in photos, the experience of flying over water is breathtaking. Foiling is booming – not only for grand prix racers but probably at your local sailing club or beach, thanks to the popularity of wingfoiling and ever growing range of foiling dinghies.

If you fancy a go but – perhaps wisely – feel like warm water might make the learning experience more fun, many sailing beach club holidays now offer a foiling experience.

Mark Warner has foil-adapted RS Aeros, while Wildwind in Greece uses ILCA/Laser dinghies with ‘Glide Free’ foils, to let first time flyers try it out in a familiar boat.

“Foiling in a Laser is a great starting point for someone learning the ropes as it still relates to basic sailing skills meaning people with less experience can still have a go,” explains Ashley Deaton, Wildwind’s beach manager. “Being a sturdy boat, the Laser allows for you to make mistakes without the risk of hurting yourself.”

Minorca Sailing has a fleet of Skeeta and Nikki foiling dinghies. “The Skeetas are great for adults and older teenagers and come with two different size rigs depending on the conditions.

“The Nikki is ideal for children and younger teenagers – we’ve had children as young as eight years foiling. Wind conditions are also perfect to get up on the foil and sustain flight, but not so much that it becomes too much of a handful,” explains Minorca boss Ian Aldridge.

Alternatively, if you want to take on the Waszp , the one-design racing class, there’s nowhere better to learn than iconic Lake Garda. Sail Garda offers a 10-hour multi-day course for experienced dinghy sailors to get to grips with the foiling design (choose your own accommodation locally).

8 Sail a norfolk classic

Selkie is a Stiffkey Cockle owned and skippered by Blakeney local Zoe Dunford, who knows the creeks and coast waters of North Norfolk like the back of her hand – each year she walks the routes at low tide, observing the changes to the ever-shifting sand bars and channels.

She offers custom day trips that can include wild swimming and spectacular wildlife watching – at this time of year sailing past seals, terns and shelduck chicks, then skeins of pink-footed geese in autumn and winter. Rarer visitors that keen birdwatchers may spot include wheatear, greenshank and grey plover.

Though an idyllic experience to share with non-sailing family, she also frequently welcomes seasoned sailors, and can offer gentle instruction on handling the gunter-rigged Stiffkey Cockle. Selkie has a silent electric engine, and all trips include tea and homemade cake.

9 NorthWest passage in a lugger

Taking on the Northwest Passage in a 100-year-old, ex-herring drifter is no small challenge, but open berths are available to join the 1915-built Tecla on a series of high latitudes adventures, building up to a full Northwest Passage attempt next summer (they’ve completed it twice in 2019 and 2023).

Tecla is family owned and operated, and went through a full restoration in 2021. Twelve guest crew join three permanent crew to run a three-watch pattern and handle the twin masts and six sails – spars are traditional wooden, but sails are Dacron, and most lines now Dyneema.

This year the Tecla is setting off on a tour of the Americas, with the opportunity to join stages ranging from 10 to 50-plus days. After a Viking route passage in June from Scotland, Tecla will cruise Greenland before dipping its bows into the Northwest Passage. Then back to Greenland, Iceland, Scotland, and south from Europe to the Falklands. From the Falklands, Tecla will sail to South Georgia and Antarctica, around Patagonia. After an incredible Pacific adventure, taking in Easter Island, Tahiti and Hawaii, a full Northwest Passage attempt is scheduled for July 2025 from the Aleutian Islands in Alaska – truly an adventure of a lifetime.

11 Sail across the Atlantic

Top of many sailors’ wish-lists, an Atlantic crossing is a true bluewater adventure . If you’re not in a position to skipper your own yacht across, then going for a first transat as a crewmember can be a great way to enjoy the experience without the responsibility of the preparation.

Every year dozens of sailors complete the ARC rally as charter guests – last winter, more than 160 people made the crossing as a paying guest on 21 yachts.

“Paying for a berth on a charter boat is a great way to achieve a sailing bucket list, but importantly for ARC sailors, it’s also a popular way to try out ocean sailing before committing with your own boat,” explains World Cruising Club boss Paul Tetlow.

“A boat owner planning a family and friends adventure can sail with a charter company to get an insight into the practicalities of ocean sailing as part of their decision-making process.

“An ocean crossing in any boat is a good way to work through decisions about the suitability of your existing boat, choices of essential and luxury equipment, crew and watch systems, and even fundamentally whether you like ocean sailing. Sailing with the ARC adds an extra layer of confidence that the boat has met a published list of safety requirements.”

Alternatively, you can use the uninterrupted crossing to hone a new skill. Rubicon3 offers a celestial navigation transatlantic passage each year, and they have proven highly popular (this year’s is already sold out, but there’s an eastbound transat next spring).

Bruce Jacobs, the founder, says: “Sailing is more about connecting with nature than relying on technology.

“That’s why it’s magical to have the skills to turn off the screens and plotters and use the sun, moon, and stars to navigate by.”

The 10 Best Explorer Yachts for High-Seas Adventures

A 350-foot gigayacht or 60-foot cruiser size isn't what defines an explorer yacht. the devil's in the details when it comes to authenticity., julia zaltzman, julia zaltzman's most recent stories.

Damen SeaXplorer Superyacht

Unlike fashion trends that seem to move as fast as a Redbull F1 car, the yachting industry takes its time adopting new ideas. There seems to be one exception. Explorer vessels, born out of the owners’ desires to go farther and stay longer, without sacrificing creature comforts, is developing with some urgency.

Several dozen builders and designers are now focusing on explorers, but they are also consulting with adventure travel firms that have a long history of using expedition yachts in remote parts of the globe. ICON Yachts, for example, collaborated with Cookson Adventures and the International Seakeepers Society on its Project Mission in both the overarching design and the details found across the yacht. Adventure outfitter EYOS employs its expertise routinely with Damen’s explorer vessels, most recently with the 190-foot Pink Shadow.   EYOS has a list of 50 features that separate authentic explorers from faux versions that might look the part but lack the necessary infrastructure and design elements.

Long-range cruising, system redundancy for autonomy at sea, and storage to carry specialist equipment like submersibles are some of the requirements that define expedition boats. There’s also deck configuration for the easy launch of tenders and toys, along with strong, ice-class hulls and climate-controlled areas comfort in extreme polar and tropic regions.

We culled through the latest fleet of explorers with multiple lengths and designs, selecting a single feature that we think makes it best in class. Here are 10 of our favorites.

Best Pilothouse: Doggersbank 77 Offshore

yacht adventure travel

More than 700 Doggersbank motoryachts have been built since the 1960s, with the latest model scheduled for delivery in 2025. The robust, offshore vessels are designed by Dutch studio Vripack for long ocean passages, assisted by a high, flared bow. “It prevents green water from hitting the wheelhouse windows in rough seas, and together with the Portuguese bridge, ensures the captain’s view is not obstructed,” Joost Mertens, Doggersbank fleet manager, told Robb Report . “The yacht’s steel hull ensures the yacht sits better in the water making it less vulnerable to wind and high waves.”

Best Deck Configuration: Columbus Crossover 42

yacht adventure travel

The Columbus Crossover 42 is defined by both straight and angled surfaces,  tapered stern sections and a concentration of volume in the bow that is becoming on many explorers. What is atypical is the yacht’s compact but flexible dimensions that accommodate a large cockpit tender and a 108-square-foot swimming pool with relaxation areas. Sold to an U.S. customer, it’s scheduled for delivery in 2025.

Best Multipurpose Stern: Bering B165

yacht adventure travel

Turkish boatbuilder Bering Yachts revealed details of its new 162-foot flagship explorer yacht, the B165 , at the Dubai International Boat Show in March. The yacht can carry 18,400 gallons of fuel, which the builder says will give it a 4,000 nautical mile range when cruising at 12 knots. It also has a 2,640-gallon holding tank. What singles the B165 out among other explorers, however, is its multi-purpose stern area for both function and form. The elongated aft deck has a swimming pool surrounded by sunbeds. When the bulwarks are folded down, the space becomes an even larger overwater terrace. When the pool is not in use, it can be used as a covered storage area for water toys and expedition equipment. The yacht’s two tenders are also stored on the aft, making it a flexible space for both equipment and guests.

Best Family-Friendly Concept: Project Mimer

yacht adventure travel

This 197-foot expedition concept by Tillberg Design of Sweden caters to family travel with a helicopter pad as well as multiple tenders and toys. It’s pitched by the studio as an introduction to true explorer yachting. It has a functional crew layout for efficient operations and an upper deck owner’s suite with a forward terrace and spa pool. With a hull that will be built to the Polar Code Category, the concept also has an optional helipad aft and long list of toys, from an electric luxury tender and two expedition RIBS to quad bikes, a submersible, Jet Skis, and, of course, an amphibious vehicle. The five-decked yacht sleeps 12 guests with crew quarters for 17 and an additional staff member, such as a nanny.

Best Ice Explorer: Damen SeaXplorer 105

yacht adventure travel

Damen’s 345-foot SeaXplorer 105 is the largest model in the SeaXplorer range, with exterior design by Azure Yacht Design. The platform was developed under the guidance of expedition specialists EYOS Expeditions, who considered over 150 design criteria, from the hull form and bridge layout to the tender davits and Zodiac boarding arrangements. But it is EYOS’s expertise in the polar regions—it facilitated the first heli-ski charter in Antarctica and the first 3,200-foot sub dive to the Antarctic midnight zone—that gives the vessel its point of difference. The SeaXplorer has an ice-strengthened hull and a specially shaped icebreaking stern to maneuver through rough terrain.

Best Interior: Project Fox

yacht adventure travel

On top of having a cool name, Project Fox has a bright, contemporary interior, courtesy of London’s Q Design, that is becoming more common on expedition yachts. The full-beam owner’s stateroom is also one of the yacht’s standout features, with its marble en suite and hardwood floors. The salon is also luxe, with white walls that brighten up travel even in areas that are sunlight deprived. Project Fox also has four other staterooms.

Best Autonomy: Project Master

yacht adventure travel

ICON Yachts’s Project Master was a transoceanic offshore support vessel before the Dutch shipyard began a refit to turn it into an explorer yacht (see before and after inset). It’s equipped with diesel-electric hybrid propulsion, a wide beam for multiple tender spaces, a 7,200-nautical mile range, and flexible cabin arrangements for expedition crew. Other features include a science lab and a certified heli-deck. “The yacht’s helicopter and sub capability mean it can offer assistance in areas with challenging access and little infrastructure,” Micca Ferrero, owner of ICON Yachts, told Robb Report . “The design is for the demands of self-sufficient voyages.”

Best Use of Volume: Arcadia Yachts A96

yacht adventure travel

The A96 mixes the lines, volume, and open-plan layout of Arcadia’s Sherpa series with the speed, joystick maneuverability, and quality of the yard’s A range. It’s the first Arcadia to have an Igor Lobanov-designed interior, as well as a high bow and high deckheads for traversing rough water. But its big differentiator is the 214 gross tonnes of volume and 24-foot beam that generate big volumes—4,300 square feet of usable space, which is 30 percent more than on other similar-sized yachts. Low bulwarks and lateral walkways emphasize the sense of openness.

Best Bow: Project Shackleton

yacht adventure travel

This 351-foot build from Lürssen has an inverted bow that looks like an eagle’s beak. The shape is designed to slice through waves with much lower vibration through the hull, while also reducing rock and roll in rough seas. Unlike the quasi-research vessel exteriors of many explorers, this vessel is representative of the changing look of many in this growing segment.

Best Multi-Mode Hull: Azimut Magellano 60

yacht adventure travel

The Magellano 60 isn’t technically an explorer yacht. Think of it as a cruiser  designed for some long-distance travel. But it does have one very interesting feature, what its builder Azimut calls a “dual-mode” hull. The semi-planing shape is designed to optimize fuel consumption (and therefore lower emissions) by about 20 percent (compared to similar-sized vessels) at low and medium speeds. The yacht’s bow is also designed to cut through waves for better seakeeping at a range of speeds. The boat cruises very efficiently at 18 knots but will hit a top end of 26, thus delivering the performance of a planing hull with the benefits of a displacement hull.

While a yacht may be the first thing that pops to mind when you think of the ultra-wealthy, chartering one might not be as expensive as you think. When you're splitting the costs between several family members or friends you are paying for transportation and stay and it can make sense financially.

You can also  keep money in your wallet  by selecting an older vessel or taking charge of sailing yourself (hiring a crew always costs extra).

So let’s take a look at options that may be within reach for people who aren’t living paycheck to paycheck but aren’t brunching with the Kardashians either.

Editor's note: prices are subject to change and may vary depending on the time of the year.

A river sunset. The trip’s barely changing scenery inspired a meditative state with no effort.

One of the many villages that the writer’s slow boat visited en route.

With no distractions and barely changing scenery, I learned to appreciate travel in a different way.

I found adventure in boredom on a snail’s-pace journey by cargo-passenger boat

I leaned against the boat’s damp railing and took a deep breath, filling my lungs with the stench of fish, diesel fumes and rusty metal. Night had fallen and the Amazonian landscape, once neatly divided into fiery orange-magenta above the horizon and dull, milky brown below it, had blurred into inky blackness.

It was only the first of my three-night journey up the Amazon River , and I was already bored.

Suddenly, the boat’s spotlight came on. The captain moved it from side to side, scouring the river for logs that could jam the propeller. Occasionally the beams revealed the bats that feasted on the moths and beetles that escorted our boat as it lumbered upstream.

I was so riveted that you’d think there were pterodactyls swooping around, and not bats. It was as if the boredom had made my senses so desperate for any kind of stimulation that even the mundane felt magnificent.

There was plenty of boredom on this boat, a cargo-passenger vessel entirely free of creature comforts, which would take me from the Colombian city of Leticia to Peru ’s Iquitos. The boat had a main deck for cargo — everything from bananas and chickens to motorbikes and even cattle — and two open-concept upper decks, where our “beds” were nothing more than hammocks we had to bring ourselves. Passengers slept side by side with strangers.

For thousands of communities that dot the Amazon, these slow boats are a lifeline of goods and personal transportation. They also attract the occasional backpacker like me, keen for a taste of local travel.

We set off on a sticky August afternoon, the boat inching forward at snail’s pace. I assumed it would move faster once we reached a broader stretch of water, but no, this was cruising speed.

The scenery barely seemed to change. At one point, I observed a rooster trotting up the riverbank — it was outpacing our boat. I restlessly went from my hammock to the front deck to the rear, to the bottom and back upstairs. I’d often find myself in a place where I was just minutes earlier, for no reason. Prior to the trip, I had resolved not to rely on music, podcasts or books, and to instead sink into the experience. It was proving challenging.

Annoyingly, the only time the boat seemed to move hastily was when we passed picturesque hamlets where stilted wooden houses and parakeet-laden trees towered over small children playing in the water.

I took to people-watching on the boat, which was full of folks from all walks of rural Amazonian life. There were grizzled working men who played dominoes and guzzled beers, teenage soccer players travelling to a tournament, and children whose carefree revelry reminded me of the overnight train trips I took in India during my childhood.

I put my pre-intermediate Spanish to use. I learned that one man transported aquarium fish for a living; another was on vacation from mandatory military service. I tried to eavesdrop on the teenagers, only to discover they were speaking an Indigenous Amazonian language.

By the third day, the boat was packed to the point where moving about meant nudging hammocks — and their occupants — out of the way. I grew to look forward to people brushing past my hammock, leaving me with the parting gift of a gentle rocking rhythm.

I spent the afternoons staring blankly out at the water, frequently slipping into a meditative state with no intent or effort (maybe because there was no intent or effort).

I was often snapped out of my daze by the appearance of the river’s iconic dolphins. Some pastel pink and others grey, they’d fish near the boat before diving and re-emerging minutes later in the distance. The sightings were captivating but fleeting — had I had my head buried in a phone or book, I would have missed most of them.

I also found myself hypnotized by the sight of butterflies congregating by the riverbank. Bright scarlet, deep purple and neon-highlighter yellow, they swooshed around like confetti caught up in a mini-tornado.

Why did the butterflies swirl around in one place? Why were some of the dolphins pink and others grey? With no Google to answer all, I rediscovered the luxury of simply wondering.

We reached Iquitos at 4 a.m. on the fourth day. A fellow traveller advised me that the port area was sketchy and that I’d be wise to stay on the boat till daybreak. So after another hour on my hammock, I set out. It was pouring rain. I hailed a motorbike taxi to my Airbnb and made a beeline for the shower to wash the stench of the boat off my body.

That night, I lay in bed with my iPhone. I restlessly moved from WhatsApp to Instagram to email, and back again, often finding myself in an app where I had just been minutes before.

I began to feel the mindless app-surfing eroding the pleasant boredom that had built up over my languorous boat ride. So I put my phone away. I imagined I was back on my hammock, waiting for someone to brush past and rock me into sleepy stupor.

I took my mom on a sleepy european river cruise to celebrate her retirement. the trip was full of surprises, on a bittersweet mother-daughter trip to ireland, i tried to accept a soon-to-be-empty nest, you might be interested in.

Why Four Seasons Yachts Is Encouraging Guests to Leverage Travel Advisors

Four Seasons Yachts + Skift

Four Seasons Yachts + Skift

May 20th, 2024 at 10:00 AM EDT

Beyond its innovative design ethos and distinctive service offerings, Four Seasons Yachts is making waves with a unique sales and distribution strategy built around a growing preference among affluent travelers to book trips with luxury travel advisors.

Four Seasons Yachts

This sponsored content was created in collaboration with a Skift partner.

Driven by increased demand among travelers for exclusive, passion-centered experiences and seamless trip planning, luxury travel advisors have seen an uptick in bookings in recent years. Aligned with these trends and capitalizing on the growing popularity of private yacht charters, Four Seasons Yachts is aiming to create a best-in-class luxury travel experience that leverages the strength of the Four Seasons brand, with inaugural voyages starting in 2026.

“Four Seasons is capitalizing on its longstanding delivery of unparalleled service by investing in luxury experiences that offer guests new ways to connect with the brand, building further differentiation and enhancing brand awareness and preference among new and existing guests,” said Marc Speichert, executive vice president and chief commercial officer at Four Seasons. “More and more, luxury travelers are looking for immersive, personalized, and worry-free travel — Four Seasons is well-equipped to deliver on this trend through our Jet, Drive, and Yacht experiences, providing a seamless end-to-end Four Seasons journey.”

SkiftX recently sat down with Nils Lindstad, vice president, business development and sales excellence at Marc-Henry Cruise Holdings LTD, joint owner and operator of Four Seasons Yachts, to discuss how the brand’s guest-focused approach to the in-journey experience is expressed in the booking phase with a travel advisor-friendly distribution strategy and novel customer experience (CX) technology that enables guests to add their travel advisors to their reservations seamlessly.

Travel Advisor-Friendly Distribution

Four Seasons Yachts recognizes the important relationship between guests and their travel advisors and the knowledge, insight, and guidance that a trusted travel advisor can provide. This approach not only simplifies the booking experience but also maintains the integrity of the travel advisor’s role.

“Our clients are used to being looked after in a very private, personal way,” Lindstad said. “That’s why we proactively encourage our guests to work with whomever they wish, and we reinforce that message in every marketing, sales, and distribution channel. We’ve also introduced Personal Yacht Consultants assigned to guests and their travel advisor of choice, providing dedicated support and a tailored and high-quality experience for each guest throughout their entire journey.”

Client-Driven Digital Experience and Booking Technology

High-touch human interaction isn’t enough to ensure success within today’s luxury travel landscape, where expectations for seamless booking experiences are increasing. The human touch needs to be balanced with the efficiency, accessibility, and personalization capabilities of digital solutions.

For Four Seasons Yachts, this means building out a client-driven digital experience with a set of technologies that enables clients to seamlessly add their preferred travel advisor to their reservation up to 60 days after booking.

“This is an industry first,” Lindstad said. “Once a guest adds their travel advisor, we validate and register the travel advisor within our system, and then they become associated with that guest, and we can communicate with them. We register the travel advisor in a portal and provide a tool kit that allows them to easily pass along critical information to the guest and perform the standard of service the guest is accustomed to.”

In addition, this tech stack includes booking mechanisms that handle the complexity of sea-based product preferences more effectively than traditional land-based central reservation systems. Sophisticated reservation systems integrate voyage bookings with additional services like transfers, land experiences, and onboard spa treatments, enhancing the pre-planning and guest information process.

Looking Ahead to 2026

Inaugural voyages are set to launch in 2026 with a selection of ports spanning yachting capitals from the Southern Caribbean to the Greek Isles, Ionian Sea, and Dalmatian Coast. “Four Seasons Yachts will be synonymous with exclusive destinations, exceptional design, personalized service, and elegant onboard amenities,” Lindstad said. “In our debut year, we’ll explore more than 130 distinct destinations across 30 countries and territories. Momentum is building as bookings for specific itineraries open and I’m thrilled to be part of this journey.”
