AZIMUT DUAL MODE HULL

The Dual Mode hull is a highly efficient semi-planing hull designed to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 20% at medium speeds* , guaranteeing superior navigation comfort in a wider range of sea conditions. The double-chine hull, combined with the vertical bow, minimizes the impact of waves and thus offers greater freedom of navigation, cruising comfortably at low speeds for extended durations as well as at higher speeds.

A 130kW/h lithium-ion battery pack can support the yacht’s hotel load for up to 4 hours during the day and up to 8 hours at night. Now, it’s possible to enjoy the full superyacht experience without the noise, vibration and emissions of the generators, making daytime activities more pleasant and nighttime relaxation more peaceful.

Azimut_TF_Air-treatment

A UTA air extraction system continuously refreshes and treats the onboard environments. The staterooms below deck benefit in particular from the continuous flow of clean air from the outside, filtered to eliminate the majority of airborn particles and odors.

domus cat

Radical zero-emission 30m catamaran Domus Cat revealed

Van Geest Design and Rob Doyle Design have teamed up to present a new 30-metre concept catamaran with a 16.3-metre beam called Domus Cat. Following a positive market response from the Domus trimaran concept , the new superyacht design aims to offer the same volumes of interior space combined with zero-emission cruising thanks to a combination of solar power, hydro regeneration and fuel cell technology.

The design studios claim the Domus Cat will have the equivalent floor space of traditional monohull motor yachts of 40 - 45 metres in length and the twin-hull design will allow it to sail at very low heel angles, improving guest comfort and reducing the chance of motion sickness.

Design studios Rob Doyle and Van Geest have been involved in the styling, architecture and engineering of more than 60 superyachts, and have drawn this experience into the Domus Cat.

"We studied what would be the smallest size vessel we could design with the one-floor layout without making it look too bulky," the designers said in a joint statement. "While Rob Doyle Design has been focusing on the naval architecture, performance, and structural feasibilities Van Geest Design developed the styling and layouts."

The structure of the yacht allows the catamaran to have a far larger beam than other catamarans on the market while also allowing for different styling options, according to the studio. Alongside space for solar panels, the exposed upper deck area is dedicated to liveable space, with various seating and lounging areas both in the shade and in the sun, plus a Jacuzzi.

Inside, the catamaran is home to a "villa style" single-deck living space, with two solar-panelled louvred areas that can be opened or closed to provide light and airflow. A covered aft deck creates a waterfront relaxation area complete with two side balconies.

Interior social spaces include a dining area, lounge space and seating space. Stairs give access to the accommodations in the hulls and an internal wheelhouse is located on the centreline with direct access to the "space deck" above.

The portside hull houses the complete crew, galley, mess, services and ample technical and storage areas. The starboard side hull houses additional guest cabins and other service areas. In total, the interior covers 224 square metres.

Blackcat 30 // Malcolm McKeon Yacht Design

Mallcolm mckeon yacht design unveiled the blackcat 30..

The BlackCat 30 concept is a very stlish 30m Catamaran, designed by Malcolm McKeon for the brand BlackCat Superyachts with interior styling by m2atelier. The builder will be experienced multihull shipyard McConaghy Boats. The yacht is capable to reach a cruising speed of 20 knots with a top speed of 30 knots.

Blackcat 30 Malcolm McKeon Yacht Design

“The cruising catamaran market is the largest growth sector in midsize yachts today. We believe this trend will continue and eventually will become common throughout the superyacht sailing scene. The large volume and stable platform a BlackCat multihull provides is the logical solution for comfortable cruising”, said Mitch Booth, founder of BlackCat Superyachts .

“We are very proud to be part of this extraordinary team in such a unique project. We try to integrate and connect the interior design with the lines, characteristics and performances of the exterior design in order to achieve a continuous atmosphere and energy. Contemporary, lightness, comfort and luxury blend together in these one-of-a-kind spaces that any superyacht owner expects to see. Technology and craftsmanship are balanced in every aspect of the design to create exceptional spaces” , said Marijana Radovic and Marco Bonelli, BlackCat interior designers from m2atelier.

M30: AN ENTIRELY NEW BREED OF EXPEDITION CRAFT

Tired of being held captive by your yacht, by its endless maintenance requirements, and by its overall lack of functionality? We invite you to familiarize yourself with M30, an entirely new concept in expedition vessels, and a trusty tool for global exploration.  This two-decked, welded-aluminum catamaran-hulled expedition yacht boasts extended range, survivalist-level off-grid capabilities, and industrial-grade construction. It has been designed for adventure, for extended use, and to pamper you instead of the other way around.

Like our larger 48-meter and 70-meter expedition yachts, this 30-meter (100′) vessel features an incredibly efficient catamaran hull that offers numerous distinct advantages over traditional monohull vessels of this size, including improved ride, better stability while at rest, a dramatic increase in usable space, and extreme shallow water capability. Most importantly, M30 uses nearly half the fuel of a comparable monohull yacht, for significantly increased range.

At a continuous long-range speed of 10 knots, M30 offers a range of 7,000 nautical miles without need for refueling. At a 16-knot eco cruise, the vessel still offers an unbelievable 4,000 NM range. And, pushing the throttles all the way home, M30 reaches an impressive 30 knot top speed, making her suitable for short getaways, long-haul adventure, or anything in between.

Custom configurable interior spaces are designed to comfortably accommodate two owners plus four guests and a crew of four, with ample space for provisions and gear. Metal Shark’s panoramic window treatment allows for dramatic views and an open, airy atmosphere, far removed from the walled-in isolation of traditional yachts.

Upon arrival at your destination, M30’s robust power generation and management systems allow you to stay on the hook as long as you like, in comfort, without need for stabilizers.

Designed for adventure with a minimum of fuss, M30 has been engineered for reliable, trouble-free operation, freeing owners from the headaches of traditional yachts to enable truly unfettered global exploration. To begin your own adventure, Contact Us today.

VILLA THE NEW 30 METER CATAMARAN BY EXTRA IS BORN

Home | News | VILLA THE NEW 30 METER CATAMARAN BY EXTRA IS BORN

EXTRA Yachts, brand of ISA Yachts, launches the new motor catamaran line announcing the VILLA X30 meter project.

Exteriors and interiors are by the Dutch firm Phathom.

The Extra VILLA offers the unrivalled livability of a home combining innovative architectural features in an open plan, multi-level layout, with the efficiency of a catamaran platform. Casual living was the mindset behind this project providing owners and guests with a more laid back experience and a new definition of enjoyment on the water.

X30 VILLA marks the expansion of Extra into the catamaran market. A dynamic synergy where automotive meets architecture. The exterior styling unmistakably imbues Extra Yacht’s DNA with its notable usage of panoramic glass, large social areas, and open concept stern facilitating easier sea access.

This new catamaran, with a quieter electric motorisation, takes advantage of a hybrid propulsion system that significantly reduces C02 emissions. Consumption efficiency is augmented by glass impregnated solar cells that produce additional energy for on-board utilities. Sustainable or natural materials such as re-purposed fibres, sustainably assessed paints and plasters, alternative leathers and reclaimed woods will be considered without compromising quality or finish.

30 metre catamaran

X30 VILLA is endowed with a beamy aft cockpit that can be configured in any manner with loose furniture.

In addition, this area is protected by a glass balustrade so as to not impede the view. The multifunctional high/low platform supports a 5+ metre tender and all the water toys. Also, it can be aligned with the swim platforms to create a much larger beach area. The current layout offers VIP cabins with direct access to the transom in order to enjoy the sea without having to traverse the interior. VILLA continues on the Extra’s beach club approach of facilitating aft-ward views with direct connection to the sea.

X30 VILLA boasts a main deck with extra high ceilings and large panoramic windows intended to maximize outdoor views while letting natural sunlight indoors. The layout is subdivided into smaller convivial multi-level zones to break up the space.

30 metre catamaran

One option includes the main salon, library nook, bar and galley casually flowing into each other as part of the same open plan area overlooked by the raised wheelhouse and observatory. Other proposals show the galley below deck or a separate kitchen on the main deck.

Creative architectural detailing, like the aft salon ceiling outstretching to the exterior, conveys a sense of a much larger social area when the doors are open. To further amplify the indoor feel of the aft cockpit, loose furnishings and accessories were chosen.

Filippetti Navetta 30: sailing in total harmony with sea

The trawler: the ideal option for all those who love and respect the sea.

Filippetti Navetta 30 is designed to enjoy a responsible sailing experience in harmony with the sea.

Built with eco-sustainable materials, this 30-meter yacht is a perfect long-range cruiser with very low environmental impact, displacing hull, low emissions and exceptional water and fuel capacity.

THE OWNER FIRST

The main focus of the Filippetti Navetta 30 project is on the owner. Spaces are arranged and customised around the owner’s needs for a totally relaxing sailing experience. However, this long-range cruiser is not only designed for comfort: aesthetics is important, too. Two different layouts and a custom interior configuration make this yacht unique and inimitable. The owner can choose between two versions, with 5 or 6 cabins. The latter even includes an upper deck that is exclusively reserved for the owner. In both versions, the master cabin enjoys a breath-breaking panoramic view.

A VERY BRIGHT LONG-RANGE CRUISER

Light is one among the main features of the Filippetti Navetta 30 . In the bow, where the large owner area is accommodated, the enveloping windows flood the interiors with an incredible amount of natural light, offering an ample panoramic view.

A WELLNESS OASIS ON BOARD

Travelling on board the Filippetti Navetta 30 is synonymous with relax and quiet. The Owner Suite can house a SPA area with jacuzzi, steam bath and an extraordinarily large shower or  a private Gym. The bathroom is decorated with fine marble details and customizable according to the owner’s needs. Guests can relax on the large terrace on the upper deck: the ideal place to enjoy the sun and the distant view between sea and sky.

Catamaran Tiki 30 : Polynesian freedom from cat legend James Wharram

Marc Bielefeld

 ·  29.10.2022

Having landed in the Swiss mountains as an Australian, Mark Seisun looked for his sea vehicle in Europe; he found the Tiki 30 in Italy

Capital yachts are anchored in the bay of Porto Pino, 90-foot-long sailing villas, mega yachts with Jacuzzi decks and butler service on board. To the left and right are the usual Mediterranean sailing machines. Hardly anything under 60 feet, carbon sails everywhere, hydraulic bathing platforms, stern garages with jet skis and all the bells and whistles. Midsummer reigns over southern Sardinia, the sea a frenzy of turquoise, music blares across the lagoon in the early evening.

At sunset, another vehicle floats into the bay, but it is conspicuously inconspicuous compared to the others. It is minimal and quiet, a small sailing wardrobe, fine lines, flat as a flounder. The boat also stands out in two respects, not only because of its two narrow hulls, but also because of its flag: the Australian national flag flies at the stern. And then there's the skipper. He stands hands-free on a skid at the front, with a peaked cap, sinewy torso, beard and long hair. The small boat turns and drops anchor under sail, as silent as a seagull.

The Tiki 30 is designed to be built by yourself

The man on board unfurls his awning, clears one or two lines and the most important manoeuvre of the day begins: jumping into the warm sea. The small yacht is made for it, the apparently feather-light catamaran floats just half a metre above the water, painted the turquoise colour of the South Seas and with an extremely Polynesian appearance. The hulls are reminiscent of the shape of Tahitian outrigger canoes, the trampolines almost touch the waves, and the white-painted tiller is curved far aft.

30 metre catamaran

However, the most unusual feature of this seaworthy speedster is that, unlike the million-dollar boats, this is a "do it yourself" boat. The catamaran was designed to be built with your own hands - even without being a trained boat builder.

James Wharram, the English pioneer of ocean-going multihulls ( see portrait below ) designed the Tiki 30 in the early nineties. After various other designs by the enterprising sailor - both larger and smaller cats - this was intended to be a throw in the golden mean. A so-called coastal trek design, trailerable, but still made of the material to sail on and even across the oceans. Built to live and travel on. The Tiki 30 is nine metres long, five metres wide and weighs just 1,000 kilograms. A simple, narrow double berth is hidden in each hull, while a flat deckhouse between the hulls provides additional space.

Independence and freedom were the life mottos of Kat designer James Wharram. They characterised his work just as much as the search for particularly simple solutions"

Trampolines fore and aft, storage space in two forecastle boxes, a chart table in the cabin, the mainsail fitted with a short gaff, plus a small furling jib - the Polynesian interpretation of modern sailing is complete: a flat, manoeuvrable yet seaworthy cat that can do pretty much anything - you can even go on safari with it. A fleet of Tiki 30s has already taken to the water on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe to approach herds of elephants and buffalo. Because of its shallow draught, the quiet stalking on the water, but also because of the space it offers for guests, the cat has often been used as a safari boat in Africa.

An idea entirely in the spirit of James Wharram. The wiry Brit was an outdoorsman and sailing minimalist, an adventurer, free spirit, lateral thinker and the enabler of a thousand crazy ideas. In 1953, he designed his first ocean-going catamaran, the "Tangaroa", making the twin-hulled boat acceptable as a cruising yacht. In Trinidad and Tobago in the 1950s, he sat down with sailing icon Bernard Moitessier to refine his designs and ideas. Above all, his idea of the simplest possible lifestyle on the water captivated many: Freedom and independence were Wharram's motto - even without a big wallet. The Tiki 30 found so many fans for good reason: James Wharram sold over 2,000 blueprints of his mid-range runabout. The sea-loving catamaran pope died in winter 2021. But the cult around his lightweight catamarans continues.

Textile connections replace metal

The next morning, the outgoing Australian skipper invites us on board to sail. The cat floats weightlessly free from its mooring, the sails are quickly set and the vehicle gets underway. Nodding cheerfully, the "Kaitiaki" strolls through the small waves, runs surprisingly high on the wind, tacks, jibes. Mark Seisun, 52, bought the cat second-hand in Sardinia, refurbished it, renewed many of the details and made it fit for purpose himself.

Some design details immediately catch the eye. Loose, simple connections wherever you look: Instead of metal fittings, expensive blocks and elaborate bolting, ropes are the connecting solution in many places - just like in ancient Polynesia, where the early inhabitants of the South Seas knotted almost everything together with coconut fibre to build their boats. The trapeze, on which the forestay is tensioned, was passed through two holes in the tops of the hull with ropes: no screw, no bolt, no jib iron. Only a hand-painted wooden foundation reinforces the sensitive area. "Easy does it," says Seisun, who now knows the cat by heart. "Simple solutions everywhere, that's what makes the design so special."

The same applies to the connection between the two hulls. Wharram swore by beams with flexible contacts in order to minimise the load at the crucial points. The boat should hug the waves - never going against them, but always moving with the sea and its movements through the water. Mark Seisun wanted to renew these important connections. In Sardinia, he sneaked through the garages and looked for old seat belts - now they hold the catamaran's hulls and load-bearing cross struts together: firm and yet flexible enough to enable beautiful, smooth sailing.

The two rudders are suspended in a similar manner, so to speak: with rope loops made of strong, modern rope. No hinges to break, no screws to rust. And to check or replace all the fastenings, all you have to do is steer the cat onto a sandbank, get into shallow water and replace the ropes if necessary. Free fun manoeuvres instead of expensive shipyard visits. Simple. Ingenious. Inexpensive.

Legendary: Wharram's do-it-yourself catamarans

With ideas and solutions of this kind, Wharram catamarans have long since earned a legendary reputation. Over the last 50 years, more than 10,000 Wharram designs of various lengths and sizes have been sold. Self-made catamarans that have now travelled several million nautical miles across the world's oceans. And not one is said to have ever capsized. However, Wharram believed in the philosophy of self-building for other reasons. He once wrote: "In a world of changing values, building your own boat gives you an inner security, it gives you the strength and individuality to live your own life."

Constructing your own boat according to Wharram's plans is like a fast-track boat-building course. Without overly complicated construction phases, without heavy equipment, without utopian materials. It takes 900 to 1,200 hours to build the Tiki 30 yourself. In 2005, designer Wharram estimated the cost of building the cat at 12,000 British pounds, although the sum is of course likely to be considerably higher today.

The cat can be manufactured for 20,000 euros and fitted out for the same amount. The result is an ocean-going boat

Nevertheless, anyone who can build such a handsome and spacious cat for around 20,000 euros is fulfilling a dream - for little money. There is always enough left over for the equipment. With sails, electrics, navigation, personalisation, built-in outboard motor and all equipment, the Tiki 30 costs between 30,000 and 40,000 euros. Brand new. That leaves room to breathe. Leaves room to do what it's all about: setting off and sailing away. Exactly Wharram's philosophy.

A damn great ship!

The cat is built from solid boatbuilding plywood and fibreglass, with plans designed for amateurs. The mast is also made of wood: spruce or Alaskan cedar. You quickly realise how to plan the construction phases, how work steps are carried out and how details fit together. Once the hulls are finished, the connections follow and, if required, the small deckhouse. It looks like a space capsule with two flat berths for adults, plus a chart table, navigation corner, storage space - and a panoramic view of the sea like on a deck saloon yacht.

On the water, the cheerful cat shows all the qualities for which it is so often praised. It starts quickly, sails well and is stable on course. The smaller version, the Tiki 26, has often crossed the Atlantic with these qualities. The Brit Rory McDougall even sailed around the world in an even smaller Tiki 21 from 1991 to 1997. He called his cat "Cooking Fat", an inversion of "Fucking Cat", nothing more than a bitter declaration of love to the adventurous Wharram design. Clearly speaking: a damn great ship!

Tiki owner Mark Seisun

An Australian in love with water

On board, owner Mark Seisun points high into the sails. Another special feature of the boat: The mainsail rises at the halyard, the gaff is trimmed, with a front zip-fastened canvas pocket completely enclosing the mast - just like a windsurfer's sail. This gives the sail a perfect leading edge, an optimal profile. For the Australian, however, it is by no means just the technical and sailing details that make this boat so special to him. His "Kaitiaki" means more to him. She is his personal oasis of freedom in a cramped, crowded Europe.

Seisun is a water person. He grew up in Sydney, sailing with his father from an early age. A small family yacht stood on the trailer in the garage driveway, always ready for trips on the waters outside the front door. He and his family sailed off, pulling the boat onto the beaches of the islands in the evenings. They slept on the beaches, on the boat, swam, dived, hunted moray eels, parrotfish and snapper while spearfishing. A life in the great Australian freedom. At the age of eleven, with an Investigator 563, they travelled to the Whitsundays, to Hamilton Island, and hid in the mangroves during storms.

His first boat was a Pacific Westerly, which he sailed along the coast off Sydney. This was followed by tours with pick-ups and small boats along the coast, into the wilderness of the Great Barrier Reef and up into the godforsaken Torres Strait, where there are more saltwater crocodiles swimming in the sea than people to be seen on land. Australia - sailing among sharks, corals and tropical magic. And he never wanted to stop being in the water. As an engineer, Seisun later strapped his windsurfing boards to the top of his lorries to whizz through the blue waves even at the most remote construction sites in the bush.

The Tiki 30 is Seisun's Australia in Europe

One day, when he is in his mid-thirties, he takes a huge step. Seisun meets a Swiss woman, they have sons Tayne and Jai - and decide to move to Europe. For Mark Seisun, it is a patent jumping ship to another world. Mountains. Winter. Houses everywhere, people everywhere. A neat idyll, no crocodiles far and wide. Just Switzerland. "It's very beautiful there, no doubt about it," he says. "But I was landlocked - I was suddenly stuck in the country, on dry land."

From Australia, the water man ended up in Switzerland. His escape from dry land is the cat in the Mediterranean

What to do? When he couldn't stand it any longer, he looked around for a boat. A sailing boat. It had to be simple, taste of freedom and remind him a little of his distant homeland. Then he found the Tiki 30 in the classified adverts. The cat was down in Sardinia. Blue sea, hot summers, a season that lasts all year round. He has now owned his "Kaitiaki" for three years. He has refloated it, painted the boat a pretty white and turquoise like the Aarafura Sea, and has already sailed it around Sardinia to the bays, beaches and grottos in the south of the islands. Since then, his "Kaitiaki" has been his escape point. His Australia in Europe.

The dream: back to Australia with the Tiki

Their two sons Tayne and Jai are also on board. They come to Sardinia again and again in the summers, spending time with their dad on the boat. Sailing, sleeping, fishing, cooking, living on the catamaran, on two runners and the large trampolines, just half a metre above the waves. Like in a faraway land, like in the atoll of dreams. But the two are slowly growing up. Training awaits, a career, their own path through life. During these days, the three of them sail across the blue sea together once again, setting off southwards the next morning: 120 nautical miles across to Tunisia. An easy exercise for the Wharram cat. A short transcontinental trip on two runners. The boat glides over the waves at seven knots, light, agile and smooth. Like a dragonfly on the wide open sea, like a bird heading for the sun.

And after that? Mark Seisun, Australian blood in his veins and a very Polynesian vehicle under his feet, looks into the distance, strangely enraptured by the question. "Back to Australia with my Kat? That would be great," he says. Atlantic, Caribbean, Pacific. Or the other way round, across the Indian Ocean. A mighty adventure would await, a huge gulp of freedom. In the spirit of the inventor. James Wharram would say: Do it, Mark - that's exactly why I brought this boat into the world.

8 Best Catamarans That Are 30 Feet or Less

30 metre catamaran

Large-sized catamarans are appealing due to their ample spacing and comfort. Therefore, a cruising family or couple looking to buy a boat is more likely to go for one of these. But are there small cruising catamarans that provide the performance, comfort, and amenities found in larger boats?

The best catamarans under 30 feet (9.14 m) include the TomCat 6.2, Cadillac 27and 30, Gemini 30, Endeavour 30, and Maine Cat. These time-tested cruising cats are easy to handle, premium built, and are great for daytime sailing, overnight trips, and some even suitable for long-range sea passages.

In this article, you’ll find a list of the best cruising catamarans below 30 feet (9.14 m). Keep reading to discover which catamarans make this list, what they have to offer, their pros and cons, and how much they cost.

If you are unsure whether or not 30ft is too small for your needs, then I suggest you check out another article I wrote named Best Size Catamaran , it will discuss why length matters and how it affects safety.

Unlike most catamarans designed for racing purposes, the TomCat 6.2 is a medium-sized cat that’s well-suited to daytime cruising. It boasts high-quality construction, vacuum-bagged hulls, and a plywood-reinforced deck.

This 20 footer (6.09 m) comes with an 11-foot (3.35 m) beam and not only offers you safety and comfort but performance and versatility as well.

This boat has a centrally placed outboard engine and two rudders that allow it to turn quickly and maneuver confidently into and out of marina slips. The 9.9 hp outboard propels it to speeds of around 8 knots (9.21 mph or 14.8 kph), though the boat has the potential to move faster if desired.

This simpler type of cat (just one engine as an example) also allows for cheaper and easier maintenance. Maintenance costs are something most people underestimate when getting a cat, if you want to get some real numbers from actual sailors then I suggest you read this article (How much does it cost to maintain a cat).

The boat sails with minimal heeling, comfortably accommodate 6-8 people, and you can sail it single-handed or take a crew.

High and narrow hulls bearing arched bottoms allow for a low wetted surface. The hull design provides low resistance and a great deal of reserved buoyancy and also enables you to drive through closely spaced waves.

On most 20-footers (6.1 m), driving through waves generates a smooth but wet ride, but with the TomCat’s enclosed deck (link to parts names explained here ), you are safe and protected behind a windshield and the high bulwark.

The TomCat makes an excellent cruiser because it performs impressively well both under sail and power. It combines the performance of a modern sailing cat with the comfort, style, and convenience of a powerboat. It’s also trailerable since you can detach the hulls from the deck , winch up the deck on a trailer, and slide the hulls underneath.

But the best part is that it’s easy on the pocket, with the price ranging between $36,750 and $44,580 .

30 metre catamaran

Catalac 30 (9M)

The Catalac brand consists of strongly built vessels that sport thick hulls, glass windows, narrow beams, and vertical transoms . Catalac 30 was the first vessel in this popular British cruising line designed by Tom Lack in the late 60s. The boat’s appeal was attributed to its safety, ample spacing, well-built interior, and load-carrying abilities.

These characteristics are extremely important on a safe catamaran, overloading your cat makes it sit lower in the water, increases drag, reduces handling and speed, there is stuff you should know about this (so that you can make an educated buy). I have created an article where I try to explain the basics of a safe cat ( link here )

Sporting 5 berths, a massive galley, plus a cockpit with a sheltered steering position, the 30-foot (9.1 m) Catalac makes an excellent floating home for a cruising family. It sails exceptionally well, doesn’t heel ( heeling explained here ), and delivers a reasonable motor-sailer level of performance.

Furthermore, the hulls provide adequate headroom, allowing those on board to move around comfortably, and there’s enough space on the deck for sunbathing.

30 metre catamaran

The Catalac’s structure features solid fiberglass, chined hulls, and a staggered sheerline that allows easy aft access. With a modest rig that’s easy to handle, the Catalac can deliver top speeds of up to 12-14 knots (13.81-16.11 mph / 22.22-25.9 kph) under sail.

Given that the boat’s design focuses more on comfort than speed, this is a spectacular performance.

Catalac 9M requires a skilled hand when turning into the wind as it is prone to blowing sideways. This is because the boat lacks ballast (which helps in keeping momentum during a tack) but also centerboards ( explained here ).

Skills are always the most essential things to bring aboard and you can acquire them in many ways, my two favorite ways are through NauticEd courses (two free courses here ) or by reading books (my top 15 books here )

Back to the boat! This model came in two versions; the standard layout contained a 30-40hp outboard, while the second option had duo engines. The latter is easier to maneuver into a marina.

30 metre catamaran

These cats retain their value pretty well. However, they might not be easy to come by since most owners find it challenging to get their hands on a larger boat with similar qualities and performance.

A Catalac 30 (9M) goes for between $33,000 and $55,000.

30 metre catamaran

Catalac 27 (8M)

The Catalac 27 8M is a pocket cruiser that boasts a strong reputation for high quality, durability, and strength. Besides, the boat’s design makes it somewhat suitable for bluewater sailing ( understand why the small size is an offshore problem).

Built like a battleship, the boat contains solid fiberglass hulls. Additionally, it comes with double engines, a large cockpit fitted with cushions all around, and features standing headroom in each hull.

30 metre catamaran

Like the Catalac 9M, this boat comes with two different layouts; a twin inboard diesel engine or an outboard engine. The twin-engine models can motor up to 1000 km (621 miles, read more on cat fuel consumption here ) without needing to refuel, while the 70 amps of charge plus water tanks (70 gallons / 265 liters) make these vessels remarkable coastal cruisers.

Catalacs equipped with outboard engines sail faster since you can raise the engine during sailing and are also lighter. This helps to minimize drag . Catalac 8M sports a short but thick mast that helps make the boat stable.

30 metre catamaran

Though small in size, this catamaran packs a lot of features in its small frame. It has a full-sized berth, a large galley that’s almost 8 feet (2.4 m) long, a quarter berth, head, and navigation station.

What’s more, the cockpit is as large as that of a 38 to 40-foot (11.5 to 12.1 m) cat.

Catalac 27 costs about $31,836.

30 metre catamaran

The Endeavour 30

The Endeavour 30 catamaran is a boat characterized by stability, ample deck space, and a spacious interior. It boasts fast cruising speeds under both sail and power.

The boat has mini keels and rudders plus symmetrical hulls separated by a hydra-cell. The latter is a center section with a characteristic V-shape.

The boat’s vacuum-bagged construction helps enhance strength and stiffness while reducing weight. Furthermore, the interior has a fiberglass mold, providing extra strength and rigidity. With sufficient breeze, this vessel can deliver reasonable off-the-wind and doable upwind speeds.

As such, you can expect to attain speeds of about ~10 knots (11.51 mph or 18.5 kph) on power reaches. Below is a video showing a panoramic tour of the Endeavour 30:

This vessel has the internal capacity of a 40-foot (12.1 m) monohull. And you can tell this from the unique layout merging the cabin and cockpit with wide doors to the numerous features packed into this 30-foot (9.14 m) vessel.

It has a spacious salon, an enormous galley, two queen berth staterooms with plenty of storage space, a head with separate showers, and a sizable U-shaped dinette.

You can get this boat for under $50,000 .

30 metre catamaran

The Geminis by Tony Smith were the United States’s first production cruising cats. Today, these vessels remain the most appealing American-built cruising catamarans. Built between 1981 and 1990, the Gemini 30 does not have a contemporary design, but it works remarkably well for cruisers desiring generous living space in a small affordable sailboat.

At only 14 feet (4.2 m) across, Gemini cats are somewhat narrow. But this mean s they can easily fit into most of the regular marina berths.

Besides, the boats still contain enough interior space for a queen-size double berth and two smaller doubles housed in separate guest rooms.

There’s also a modest but serviceable saloon with duo settees and a collapsible table that can transform into an additional double berth.

30 metre catamaran

For the Gemini 30, this translates to a cruising cat with standing headroom that can comfortably accommodate 3 couples in private cabins or a family with small children. A good-sized galley, a spacious head with a shower, nav desk, and a large comfy cockpit make up the Gemini 30’s cruising palace.

Catamaran layout is highly personal and if you want to learn more about different characteristics then I suggest you read my article Designing the perfect catamaran layout ( Link )

While not that fast, the Gemini 30 will easily outsail the Endeavor 30 discussed above. Its daggerboards (which are explained in detail here ) can point well, and if you keep it light, it can do 7-8 knots (12.9-14.8 km/hr) under sail.

Besides, raising the daggerboards reduces the wetted surface area, and increases the speed downwind.

30 metre catamaran

The Gemini 30 tends to pound and hobbyhorse a little when sailing in choppy waters – particularly when overloaded (more on load carrying capabilities in this article ), but the deep pivoting daggerboards provide stability and lift underwater.

Furthermore, the Gemini’s retractable rudders enable it to venture into shallow waters.

This is a very popular cruising cat that’ll give you a lot of bang for your bucks.

You can find a Gemini for less than $65,000.

Maine Cat 30

The Maine Cat 30 combines premium quality construction materials with the most advanced building techniques to create a lightweight vessel capable of handling most offshore conditions. What’s more, this boat can remain trouble-free for years on end with little effort.

If you are in the market for a simple liveaboard cruiser that you can use for a short weekend getaway or a cruising voyage, this is it.

The boat has a sizable primary stateroom berth with ample overhead space and a dresser fitted with a hanging storage cabinet. The enormous head includes a toilet, sink, 20-gallon (75.71 L) holding tank, vanity, and a pressurized shower.

Covering the open bridgedeck is a permanent hardtop. This spacious bridgedeck can hold quite a crowd and comes with a convertible dinette that turns into an extra berth. If need be, you can even enclose the entire space using acrylic windows or screens. Gabo

30 metre catamaran

The 360-degree visibility from the cockpit allows the captain plus the crew a panoramic view, and all sail controls go back to the cockpit, which is very useful if wanting to sail single-handedly.

I believe that most boats should be set up in this way since sooner or later you might be in a situation where there is only one person to handle the controls, such as in an emergency. But more on that in another article ( Link ).

The Maine Cat 30 is a classic boat that delivers on high-performance multihull sailing. Designed to offer much better performance than catamarans bearing tall and heavy bridge decks, this cat weighs less and suffers less windage thanks to the acrylic windows.

The boat’s interior layout allows for easy cleaning as surfaces sport a smooth gel coat and satin-finished cherry trim. The solid but lightweight furniture bears the same Core-Cell foam core employed on the hull, deck, and hardtop. Plus, there’s ample storage for all your sailing equipment, cleaning supplies, and provisions.

A Maine Cat 30 can cost up to $110,000.

Heavenly Twins 27

The overall design of this well-equipped catamaran makes it a superb pocket cruiser.

Heavenly Twins 27 manages to fit not one but two coachroofs on hulls that are only 27 feet (8.20 m) long. Canoe sterns and a central cockpit separating the duo coachroofs form the boat’s other prominent features.

Famous for their excellent build quality, medium-depth draft, and narrow beams, Heavenly Twins 27 appeals to a wide range of boating enthusiasts.

These include solo sailors, weekend sailors, cruising families, circumnavigators, beginner sailors, and experienced liveaboards such as this famous Youtube channel “Kittiwake”.

The vessels house double cabins in the hulls while the forward starboard contains the heads and, to port, the galley. You can easily access the bar from the well-protected cockpit while the Comfordesk accommodation converts into a double dock.

A stoop through allows access from below-deck to the aft compartment without going through the cockpit. There’s ample storage space throughout the boat, plus you can section off the large stateroom into smaller double compartments if desired.

The price range for this boat is $ 20,098 to $24,193. (I believe that kittiwake is for sale too)

30 metre catamaran

The last cruising catamaran on my list is the Aquilon 26 . This French-built cruising vessel is light in weight and trailerable, which means you can disassemble it in a few hours or transport it as-is.

Designing a boat that is possible to disassemble usually means that it is structurally less strong, which by no means is a problem during coastal sailing but the Aquilon 26 is mostly attractive to sailors who prefer inland lake sailing. It’s also suitable for beginner sailors.

Although there are no real “beginner cats” there are specs to consider if you are a beginner with catamarans, most of them I have listed in another article ( here ). Gabo

This 26-footer (7.92 m) has the potential for good speed though its layout is anything but conventional- which forms part of its appeal.

The cockpit works as the saloon, and a full bimini protects the crew from lousy weather. The starboard hull contains a dinette and galley, and the port has a double berth stateroom. The windows are quite unusual, but they provide lots of light, remarkably enhancing interior visibility.

Aquilon 26 can deliver an average cruising speed of 10knots (11.51 mph or 18.5 kph).

On a beam reach, you can expect around 25 knots (28.77 mph or 46.3 kph) with an adequate breeze ( I have never sailed at 25knots but researching this boat supposedly it is possible).

You can get this boat for under $50,000.

What Makes Small Cruising Cats Attractive?

Small cruising cats are ideal for sailing along the coast. But that’s not all. Under capable hands, properly fitted smaller cats can also deliver spectacular offshore passages similar to their larger counterpart (Heres a list of full-sized bluewater cats).

They can operate over long cruise ranges, cross oceans , and circumnavigate the globe . Smaller cats are also suitable for day sailing, overnight trips, and coastal or inland voyages.

For most sailors, comfort on board is crucial, so they’ll look for a vessel that guarantees a comfortable cruising experience. The good thing is that smaller vessels provide almost the same qualities and amenities that bigger vessels offer. Plus, you can do quite a bit with the available space, especially if it’s well laid out.

You’ll find that most 30-footer (9.14 m) or more miniature cruising cats comprise a galley, head, bunks, navigation and entertainment electronics, and refrigeration.

Sailors usually talk about these benefits of smaller cats:

  • They’re less expensive. Large boats are costly to buy. They also cost more to hire, maintain, and dock. You can buy a small-sized boat at a much lower price, and parts tend to cost less too. Besides, you get to use smaller sails, winches, and lighter lines than those applicable on a larger boat. And since marine services such as moorings and haul-outs get billed via boat length, a smaller cat makes sailing more affordable.
  • They boast superior builds. Most cruising boats under 30 feet (9.14 m) feature designs that are 30+ years old. In those days, weather forecasts were hard to come by and not as accurate, so boat builders used hulls with thicker fiberglass than the type found in today’s builds. Furthermore, everything in the boat, including rigs, rudders, hulls, keels and decks, was designed to withstand strong winds and high waves.
  • They have simpler systems. This means less time spent fixing and maintaining your boat. For instance, most small cruising cats often lack water-makers, hot water systems, or electric anchor windlasses.
  • They’re easier to handle. Smaller cats are simpler to sail than larger cats. It’s also easier to sail one single-handed or with a small crew.

What is the largest cat on person can sail?

The Disadvantages of Smaller Cruising Cats

Below are some of the most discussed downsides of small cats:

  • They have limited living space, storage, and amenities.
  • Though they don’t heel much, they are less comfortable than larger boats since they get tossed around much more easily in big ocean swells.
  • It’s not easy to accommodate crew for extended periods; hence there are fewer hands to share work.
  • They are slower and take longer to get to their destination.

Though fewer are on the cruising trails than their larger counterparts, small catamarans make ideal cruisers because they are simple, seaworthy, and pocket-friendly.

When choosing the best cat for your needs, focus on quality rather than size. A well-planned 30-footer (9.14 m) is reliable and provides ample space for your accommodation, dining, and relaxation, plus a storage room for provisions and any spare parts you might need.

And if you want even more info than I have presented to you in this article I would recommend a book from Serj, he makes it easy to understand why size matters and how to find a cat suited for your needs (amazon link )

FEATURED BOAT

Billionaires like Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg spend six figures a year maintaining their superyachts. Here's how.

  • Superyachts  are one of the most expensive assets money can buy.
  • The true cost of ownership is even more, adding up to millions a year.
  • Here's how much it costs to own a superyacht — and what that money is going toward.

Financial advisors are quick to warn prospective owners that a boat is nothing more than a hole in the water in which to throw money. When it comes to superyachts , you'd better have bags and bags of cash.

As one luxury agent told Business Insider at the Palm Beach International Boat Show: "Buying a boat, it's a huge purchase — and nobody needs a yacht."

A superyacht, generally over 30 meters long, is one of the most expensive assets money can buy, with the largest costing more than a lot of real estate or a private jet. Billionaires like Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, and Steve Jobs each spent nine figures on their megayachts.

That doesn't include operating costs. Owners should expect to pay about 10% of a yacht's new-build price each year, experts told Business Insider. That's tens of millions of dollars annually for the most luxurious boats.

"It's a small-to-medium-sized business in its own right," said Jeffrey Beneville, a senior vice president at insurance company NFP, where he specializes in consulting clients about yachts.

Unlike many smaller boats, superyachts need staff, not just a captain. Some superyachts have space for dozens of crewmembers , including a chef, engineer, and masseuse for the guests onboard. Each gets an annual salary — the highest-ranking members earn six figures — and benefits. Eric Schmidt's yacht fits a crew of 28 for a ratio of about two crewmembers per guest.

Then there's fuel, dockage fees, routine maintenance, and insurance. The latter hinges on everything from the reputation of a yacht's shipyard to where an owner wants to take it (if a vessel is taking frequent trips to the South China Sea, for example, expect to pay a higher premium). If a superyacht has a support yacht — or a support superyacht, in Bezos ' case — expect to pay another 10% of that boat's price annually.

"The cost to maintain a yacht is so high that they just think that money's getting lit on fire," Matthew Fleissig, the CEO of wealth management firm Pathstone, told BI of his clients who choose to charter rather than own.

One of his firm's clients who does own has a 23-meter yacht valued at $5.2 million. The annual cost to staff, maintain, dock, and insure the boat is $346,297, according to documentation provided to BI. The lion's share is spent on marina fees ($95,970) and maintenance work ($88,408.) While not exactly a Sunfish, that boat is too small to count as a superyacht.

At 106 meters, the Amadea, owned by a sanctioned Russian oligarch , definitely does. The $300 million yacht, which was seized in 2022 and is docked in San Diego, cost $922,000 a month to maintain, a court filing showed: $360,000 for crew salaries, $75,000 for fuel, $144,000 for insurance, $178,000 in dry-docking fees, and $165,000 for maintenance, waste removal, food for the crew, and miscellaneous expenses.

"And that's an inactive yacht that's in the water," NFP's Beneville said.

If it were operational and carrying guests, the costs would be about twice that, or between $20 million and $30 million a year, he added.

Of course, it makes more financial sense for the non-obsessives to charter, and many of Fleissig's clients do. And some owners choose to offer their yachts for charter — the most luxurious cost as much as $1 million a week — to offset the costs.

"If you charter the boat for 50 days a year, it's going to help a lot," Anders Kurtén, the CEO of brokerage firm Fraser Yachts, told BI.

Then again, the running costs don't matter as much at a certain point. "If you're worth $30 billion, it's nothing. And if you're worth $117 billion — and these are the guys we're talking about — they're in it as long as it's still enjoyable for them," Beneville said. "It's not a money thing."

feadship brings out the world’s first hydrogen fuel-cell superyacht, project 821

Meet project 821, the world’s first hydrogen fuel-cell superyacht.

Yacht builder Feadship recently unveiled what may be the world’s first hydrogen fuel-cell superyacht , Project 821. It is a colossal water vehicle with a size of 118.80 meters, all running on hydrogen, which is a lightweight, ‘puffy’ substance. When hydrogen is processed in a fuel cell, the by-products are electricity and water in the form of steam.

For a superyacht, it may be able to carry a lot of power without adding too much weight. The only catch, one that the Feadship team had to confront, was that hydrogen needs to be stored in an extremely cold container to keep it from taking up too much space as a gas. To do this, Feadship had to make Project 821 a bit longer than originally planned to fit a four-meter storage tank, hence its 118.80-meter size.

Feadship creates custom four-meter hydrogen storage tank

Feadship’s custom four-meter storage tank takes up quite a lot of space, eight to ten times more than regular diesel fuel would, even though the hydrogen itself is lighter. On the upside, the fuel cells on the Project 821 superyacht can also run on methanol, which is a liquid fuel that’s easier to store, a cleaner version of gasoline.

Methanol doesn’t need to be super cold, so it might take up less space on the superyacht. At the moment, future innovations on fuel cells and onboard reforming of methanol to hydrogen are on the near horizon for Feadship, who’s focusing more on the current hydrogen technology they have in front of them.

In terms of energy storage, superyacht Project 821 stores less energy, around 543 kW hours, compared to a similar-sized yacht of Feadship named Savannah, which uses diesel (1 megawatt hour). The new superyacht doesn’t need as much stored energy since its hydrogen fuel cells can continuously generate power while it is running.

Think of it as having a refillable generator onboard, boosting the superyacht’s power instead of relying only on a battery. In this way, the hydrogen-run Project 821 eliminates noisy engines when anchored or traveling slowly, and there’s no pollution when it cruises either.

superyacht Project 821 and its heat recycling system

The superyacht Project 821 also has its own heat recycling system, which captures the waste heat from the engine—in this case, the fuel cells—and uses it for heating the pool, jacuzzi, and steam room on board, keeping the air at a moderate temperature in the guest areas, warming the towel bars and bathroom floors, and curtails the use of separate heaters to power up these amenities.

Feadship also installs a smart air conditioning system which automatically adjusts its temperature based on occupancy so that if nobody’s in a room, it won’t waste energy cooling it. The British RWD Studio worked on the entire look of the hydrogen-run Project 821, including the exterior, general arrangement, and all the décor inside.

Coastal vibe is the theme the design attempts to evoke, the feeling of being near the beach or ocean while in a state of luxury. Light and airy colors and interior furnishings may help bring these up, starting with the use of light colors like white, beige, and cream for the walls, furniture, and fabrics. This sense of openness and bigger space is accompanied by textured fabrics and leathers, as well as a variety of natural materials.

These include marble, rattan, eucalyptus wood, and limed oak, a light-colored wood, all of which run throughout the interior of the superyacht Project 821. The design firm also retained the shapes of certain design elements on different floors, such as door trim features and hallway railings, to create a sense of continuity, but their use of materials vary, so that the guests can have the feeling of being in a new area.

The hydrogen-run superyacht is designed for families, with the top deck resembling a whole apartment on its own. It has two bedrooms with separate bathrooms and closets, a gym,a  pantry, two offices, each with a fireplace for working or relaxing, and a living room. There’s a walkaround deck with shaded areas at the front and back for lounging and enjoying the outdoors, and a jacuzzi in the front for a scenic soak.

Since Project 821 is wide, the hallways inside the superyacht are spacious to make walking around easy, allowing large side decks outside as well where guests can walk side-by-side. The superyacht has a  private access point for the owners that goes all the way down to the lower deck, which features a staircase with built-in bookshelves and display areas and an elevator for easy access between decks.

On each floor, dedicated areas await guests, such as a coffee corner and a games area on the bridge deck, a library on the main deck, and a private dining room with a balcony and a connected bedroom on the lower deck. Feadship says Project 821 is the biggest superyacht ever built in the Netherlands, beating out its own sibling, Launchpad.

Even though they’re similar in length, Project 821 has 30 percent more space inside and has five floors above the water and two floors below, with the owner’s deck being as high as a 12-story building. As of publishing the story, Project 821 is being offered for sale by Edmiston.
