Naval Force 3: A local alliance takes an interest in the resumption of the construction site

The Naval Force 3 shipyard, located on the La Rochelle nautical plateau, has been placed in receivership. While awaiting the verdict of the commercial court, buyers are in the ranks, without satisfying the current manager, Philippe Joneau.

Naval Force 3 in receivership

The Naval Force 3 shipyard , which has specialised in recent years in subcontracting composite parts, was placed under a safeguard procedure in November 2020. The company, located on the nautical platform of La Rochelle, supporting 8 employees and a manager, Philippe Joneau, had accumulated a significant debt. To allow the transfer, the collective procedure was finally converted into receivership on 26 January 2021, postponing the study of two offers from neighbouring companies Neel Trimarans and Chantiers de l'Arsenal, builder of the Day One catamarans.

The situation has finally changed as a result of the new procedure. The two candidates confirmed that they had submitted a single joint bid, the only one we know of. They do not wish to give further details of their joint project until the Commercial Court of La Rochelle has made public its choices, which are expected on 16 March 2021. For his part, the manager of Naval Force 3, Philippe Joneau, is worried about a new offer that he announces to be much lower than the previous ones.

A complex space issue for the nautical industry in La Rochelle

The steps taken to take over the Force 3 shipyard are taking place in a delicate local context for the yachting sector, in terms of land. The spaces on the nautical platform, near the lifting equipment and the trawler basin are limited and sometimes questioned for their nuisance for the neighbourhood. Neel Trimarans had already bought out its subcontractor TechniYachts Pinta in June 2018 to expand its production capacity. Chantiers de l'Arsenal, whose composite part of its Day One catamarans was previously built at TechniYachts Pinta and Naval Force 3, opened a temporary structure in September 2020 in the industrial port of La Pallice, also in La Rochelle, to internalize its composite production. Beyond that, Yannick Bestaven's victory in the Vendée Globe has revived the political will to create an ocean racing centre in the port of Charente, which again requires space. Without prejudging the outcome of the procedure, certain tensions surrounding the operation show the importance of what is at stake, in addition to the future of the employees.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
• LOA: Length overall in feet
• Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
