What materials are best suited for boat or yacht furniture?

This durable tropical hardwood develops a lustrous silver-grey patina over time and possesses excellent durability against dry rot, which is why teak furniture can last a lifetime with minimal maintenance. What are the best seating options for my boat?

The captain's chair may be the most important seat on board, but all hands on deck deserve a spectacular seat to soak in the ocean views. While we do not offer custom-made boat seating, we do have a number of stand-alone seating choices fit for the finest superyacht. 

If you are looking for vintage charm and unbeatable relaxation,  Barlow Tyrie's Commodore Steamer  takes inspiration from the teak deck chairs popularized with turn-of-the-century Transatlantic cruise liners like the infamous  Titanic . With an adjustable backrest and removable footrest, the Commodore exemplifies old-world leisure that feels right at home on today's boat decks.

For a more lightweight selection that still possesses a classic look, we recommend folding boat deck chairs like those in the  Safari  and Beacher collections. Combining canvas and teak, these portable seats are easy to adjust on deck and can be brought ashore to lounge on the beach.

When it comes to superyacht furniture, wear and tear from guest use is just one challenge to keeping everything in pristine condition. The harsh conditions of a marine environment, including the 3S’s (salt, sand, and sunlight) pose the biggest trials and tribulations to outdoor furniture, while the fourth S, sunscreen, can really mess up that beautiful designer lounge in the main salon.

The problem is so acute that a number of yacht designers have expanded their portfolios from designing hulls and interiors to creating furniture that will stand the tests of weather and guests. They are using special fabrics, sustainable materials, and creative weaves in custom furniture lines that dress up the beach clubs and salons, rather than making these social areas dowdy after a season. Others are focused on the interior with vibrant designs, unusual shapes, and heirloom-quality woods.

These eight furniture lines all sport unique designs—from stunning starburst tables to lounges that float—but all have the same goal: Letting everyone put their feet up and enjoy the furniture, without the owners having to wonder later how they’ll restore everything so it looks new again.

Oceana by Bannenberg & Rowell

British studio Bannenberg & Rowell’s spring 2023 collection of outdoor yacht furniture was developed in collaboration with Sutherland Furniture and named after the Jon Bannenberg-designed 180-foot yacht Oceana . Made from teak with stainless-steel accents, the 10-strong collection of seating and tables is built to withstand high seas. “The most obvious signature across the range is that combination of a tactile radial junction with a stainless-steel dowelled-mortice and tenon-style joint,” designer Simon Rowell tells Robb Report , who then translates: “This frame is designed to look simple but still took several years to develop with the Sutherland team to engineer it into a viable product range.” An exterior textile and rug range that complements the Oceana furniture is also available from Sutherland sister company Perennials.

Sea + Shore by Silverlining

Sea + Shore is the first collection of high-performance outdoor furniture from luxury interiors brand Silverlining. Following 18 months of in-depth research and development, the range comprises five tabletop designs available in more than 200 combinations. Inspired by marine patterns and textures, the finishes include hand-shaded wood marquetry, lacquer ombré patterns, intricate two-tone lacquer work, “intaglio” etched stainless steel, and sand-carved polished cast-art glass. “The collection has been designed in response to client requests to acquire exterior furniture with the same limitless creativity, innovative craftsmanship and exemplary service as Silverlining’s interior pieces,” Silverlining’s founder Mark Boddington says.

Arc by Winch Design

Winch Design’s debut collection with Summit Furniture, called Arc, is a contemporary beach club range made from teak and inspired by the sea and sky. Its signature feature is a laminated teak weave spun between brushed stainless-steel rods to create an arc that echoes the woven rope traditionally used on sailing yachts. The eight-piece range includes a lounge chair, a dining chair, a bar chair, a coffee table, a sun lounge, a bar cart, a dining table, and an occasional table, featuring fully customizable fabric. Every natural detail is brought forward, including the teak grain on top of the coffee tables, which are manipulated into leaf patterns.

IYC + Neal Jones Furniture

British brand Neal Jones Furniture specializes in the creation of fitted and freestanding custom and semi-custom furniture for superyachts and high-end residences. In 2023, IYC partnered with Neal Jones to provide a tailored design service for yacht owners looking to dress their new builds or refit projects with hand-crafted furniture built with the marine environment in mind, from bar stools and foot stools to daybeds and lounges. “Being that one-stop-shop for all yacht purchasers and having people with the expertise in every aspect of yachts is key to our business and delights our customers,” says IYC CEO Raphael Sauleau. “Having a company like Neal Jones Furniture allows us to give our customers all the options they need to fit their yacht in the very best furniture.”

The Nimbus Collection by Coast New Zealand

Suitable for a sun deck, beach set-up, or even on the water, the Nimbus Collection by superyacht supplier Coast New Zealand is comprised of inflatable furniture suited to multiple settings. The lounge, orbit, and chair are available in customizable colors and fabrics made by Sunbrella. But beyond the looks, they are designed to be comfortable, long lasting, portable, and convenient. The air-filled liners are manufactured using fabrics and technology traditionally used for paddle boards or tenders, such as marine grade reinforced PVC with heat sealed seams (rather than glue which melts in the sun.) Marine-grade stainless ‘D’ rings are included for securing the furniture to a deck. The furniture also comes with a USB rechargeable pump and a storage bag made from recycled sails.

The Lounge Collection by Eva Mechler

Award-winning furniture designer and Master Furniture Maker Eva Mechler specializes in made-to-order wooden furniture, hand-crafted at her workshop in northern Germany. The Lounge Collection is made using solid wood left over from the building of superyachts, including European native species of oak, chestnut, ash, and walnut. The first prototypes were made from a sustainable “modified wood” called Tesumo developed by Lürssen Yachts and Wolz Nautic. Conceived as an alternative to teak and selected by the owner of REV Ocean for use on the yacht’s exterior decking, Tesumo is strong, durable, and more resistant to weathering than other woods. Mechler’s collectible art-furniture earned her a place as a finalist for the Smart Yacht Award at the Monaco Smart Yacht Rendezvous in 2023.

Onde by Cristiano Gatto

Driven by a desire to create fully custom furniture that matches his boats, superyacht designer Cristiano Gatto has collated his debut furniture range, called Onde. The catch: It is only available to owners of a Gatto-designed yacht, such as Heesen’s Project Orion, which is due to deliver in 2026 and features Onde furniture on board. The 12-piece range features key items from past projects, each one taking up to six months to build. “I have clients who changed their loose exterior yacht furniture four times in the past six years because off-the-shelf ranges can’t withstand the harsh marine environment,” Gatto tells Robb Report . Made from wood, stainless steel, carbon fiber, and polymeric materials, the range includes tables, chairs, sunbeds, and the most difficult item to manufacture: the basic, unassuming ottoman.

Paola Lenti 2023 Collection

The new indoor and outdoor 2023 Collections from yachting furniture stalwart Paola Lenti was unveiled by the brand during Milan Design Week, hosted at its newly unveiled flagship store. The range is made from eco-friendly materials, such as 1,000-year-old river wood which has been preserved over time by gravel, sand, and clay. There are also outdoor textiles and fine yarns for the interior pieces, all made to be wear-resistant and recyclable.

Yacht varnish finishes.

The gloss varnish finish is a long and careful process which is sprayed and sanded multiple times to obtain a thick film preserving the natural colours of the wood longer and beautifully exposing the wood grain and colour of the Sipo Mahogany. Available in semi-gloss and high gloss finish for yachts.

Secure Cushion-Clip System

We have carefully designed and positioned a cushion-clip system in stainless steel 316 which fixes onto the wooden frame with minimal visibility and maximum support in windy conditions. This offers quick and easy removal when necessary for storage and cleaning of the cushions.

Octoport’s Furniture Creates Onboard Elegance

In 2010, Arun Maheswaran took a job at a company that made carbon-fiber gangways and similar products for yachts. He was a technical draftsman who had never set foot on a yacht, but through his work, he found himself spending a lot of time aboard them at events such as the Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Monaco boat shows.

“By 2016, I had seen a lot of yachts and met a lot of people,” he says. “I loved it, but I saw a lot of cheap furniture on expensive yachts. This is why I started the company Octoport.”

A number of things about yacht furniture—and, in particular, exterior furniture—left Maheswaran scratching his head. Why, he wondered, were superyacht owners buying teak furniture whose color changed after a couple of seasons? Or rattan furniture that looked worn in a similarly short time period? Why wasn’t the exterior furniture built in colors that matched the rest of the yacht’s exterior paint scheme? And why didn’t items such as sun loungers and side tables have the same shapes as the exterior of the yacht itself, say, with the long sun loungers echoing the design of the yacht’s sheerline?

Carbon-fiber manufacturing, he knew, made all these things possible. So, Maheswaran started drawing sketches and showing them to everyone in the industry who might offer a valuable opinion. The result was Octoport’s first collection, Rhea, which intrigued some big-name yacht designers enough that they made the trek to his Germany office from the nearby Lürrsen shipyard when they were there working on other projects.

That was before the coronavirus pandemic hit. Since then, he has started to receive requests for project quotes, and he has created additional collections with a goal of introducing one per year.

The newest collection, Pioneer, debuted at the Monaco Yacht Show in September. It was presented along with Octoport’s deck-lighting technology, which makes the caulk strips in teak decking light up in whatever colors owners desire. (The same technology is used in Octoport’s furniture pieces such as tables with backlit teak tops.)

Pretty much every piece of furniture Octoport produces is a prototype, with sizes and colors customizable, depending on what the yacht owner has in mind for the space. The company keeps no quantities of stock furniture.

“The owners are all different types of people,” Maheswaran says. “I think it’s better not to have stock. When they order a collection, we will start the production in Hamburg, with the paint job done in Bremen.”

Overall, Maheswaran is trying to inject new thinking into the creation of exterior guest spaces throughout the yachting industry. He believes that as the yachts themselves take on more modern styling, so too should the furniture that is everywhere on board.

Good for Your Boat, Good for Your Home

Rain, sun, hot days, cold nights, freezing temperatures, even snow and hail—yikes the elements can be hard on wood that’s left outdoors for months or years at a time by design.

We sailors know all too well the toll that the elements can take on the exterior wood that adorns our boats, which is why for centuries those who could afford it have chosen teak for its durability in topsides applications and for its natural good looks, resistance to rot, and strength when used for furniture and structural panels belowdecks.

“Teak loves water,” says Mal Haddad, vice president of Westminster Teak , a high-end furniture design and manufacturing company based in Live Oak, Florida. Haddad notes that it’s those very qualities appreciated by sailors that make teak an ideal choice for outdoor furniture at home, no matter where you live. Left with its natural finish, oil rises to the surface of the wood, its high oil content and relatively low coefficient of thermal expansion means teak can withstand large swings in temperature. In other words, it can be left outdoors year-round, even in snow-covered regions, without the wood warping, shrinking or expanding.

Haddad, with a background in industrial and ocean engineering, grew up in Singapore, where as a boy he was surrounded by exotic woods—especially teak—at the shipyard where his father built oceangoing tugs. After attending college here in the States, Haddad worked as a consultant to telecommunications companies and traveled extensively, but as a hobby, he began to design and build teak furniture, eventually opening a studio and gallery in Florida that was tailored to interior designers and other furniture designers. It was at the studio that he met Jim TenBroeck, who founded Westminster Teak in 1997. It took some persuasion, Haddad said, but eventually, 16 years ago, he brought his design skills to the company full time as vice president. Today, many of the designs in Westminster’s catalog are his.

And on the subject of design, Haddad is passionate. Because of teak’s longevity, furniture built from it will last years longer than pieces made from metals such as aluminum, or even plastics, he says. So, Westminster favors timeless styles that won’t fall in and out of favor, depending on the trend of the day. Several of Westminster’s designs date back to the company’s early days, and new models are introduced only after a lot of thought has gone into them.

Besides having a large collection of teak furniture of his own, Haddad says that he also collects bowls—not only as art, but as utensils that he uses around the house. Comparing bowls to furniture, he says: “It is an object you live with … and love! That’s good design.”

In the marine industry, recently the trend in production-boat building has been to find teak alternatives for decks, trim and interiors. This is due in part to cost, but also because of concerns about the availability and sustainability of the wood itself.

Haddad, though, is equally passionate about the environmental benefits and sustainability of properly grown and harvested teak. From the outset, Westminster has had a strategic partnership with an Indonesian factory that was the first to join Nusa Hijau, the Indonesian chapter of the Global Forest Trade Network. All its teak comes from sustainably harvested plantations in Java, Indonesia. Those plantations are managed by the Ministry of Forestry, Perum Perhutani, and every process of the teakwood, from forest to retail floor, is monitored and certified by third party technical organizations. Sustainability, he adds, also means making sure workers both in the plantations and in the factories are treated fairly and paid a living wage.

When people think of teak, Haddad says, they often think of luxury yachts and the lustrous, rich look of high-gloss varnished teak furniture and trim. That, says Haddad, is fine for wealthy owners who can afford to hire crew to cover chairs and tables when they’re not being used, or to frequently sand and revarnish rails and whatnot.

But teak, he says, will do just fine on its own if left unfinished outdoors and allowed to weather over time and develop a handsome silvery gray patina—a look that he says he prefers as it complements beautifully with the landscape of the outdoors , and often what is found aboard yachts with teak decks.

Upkeep is minimal, he says. All you need to do is wash down the teak a couple of times a year with dish soap and water, using a soft-bristle scrub brush to remove airborne dirt and the like. Don’t, he says, oil the teak for outdoor use, because moisture can find its way under the surface and cause mold or mildew that will stain the wood and difficult to remove. 

His advice for a homeowner: Invest in good-quality, well-designed outdoor furniture. Sit in it and enjoy its look and feel because it will be with you for a good long time.
