Virtual Skipper 5 enables you to skipper the finest competition boats currently available in over 14 different ocean water courses; the settings for the most prestigious international competitions such as Valencia, Auckland, Rio, Marseille...

If the regattas at the helm of the Class ACC boats is the highlight of this new Virtual Skipper title, the other class of boats are also featured in the game. Players can therefore take the helm of four types of competition boat, each behaving differently on an ultra-realistic sea modelled and animated to perfection.

Though the 'Class America' boats are the stars of this new episode, players will appreciate the variety offered by the inclusion of other types of boat, such as the Trimaran Open 60, the real 'formula ones' of the sea, the Offshore Racer and the Melges 24.

An editor will also give you the ability to create integrally your own regattas and ocean water courses which will guarantee renewed and continued gameplay fun in the Internet multiplayer games.

“Quite simply this is the most technically accurate sailing simulator I have experienced. This alone can teach you all the jargon, the procedures and best practices for real life sailing. Excellent A*” A* – Sim UK “The thought processes and actions required to sail your virtual boat are remarkably close to the real world.” Yachting Monthly “As well as being a great learning tool, and great reminder for skippers and crew who only get occasional opportunities to sail, it's great fun in its own right and provides the opportunity to get a sailing 'fix' whenever you have a spare 15-20 minutes.” Practical Boat Owner

About This Game

  • eSail Races. Pit your skills against other users or ‘computer skippered’ boats and become skilled at race tactics, tacking, gybing and trimming the sails including using the mainsheet, jib sheets and kicker (boom vang).
  • Treasure hunts. It’s all about throttle control! You need to get close enough to click on your prize without drifting into the jetty or quay. And make sure you are not going too fast when you grab your treasure or it will end up smashed on the deck!
  • Steering Challenges. Steer between the red and green buoys and keep your speed up for maximum points. But be careful of the other boats. They should observe collision regulations or ‘Rules of the Road’ but with your boat constantly changing direction they do not always behave as expected!
  • Anchoring. In these challenges you will anchor up, then we check your swing circle by applying different wind directions. You need to take into account the condition of the sea bed and lay down enough anchor chain.
  • Passage Planning. Using our unique charting tool, create a course between locations such as Maxwell Marina and Frazer Town via given waypoints. At the end of your voyage make sure you moor up safely (using your fenders) without making contact with the jetty!

yacht simulator online

  • Sailing controls. Use your virtual crew to take full control of sails, control lines, winches and travellers. Practise your winch technique and learn how to operate cleats and jammers safely. You can also use AutoSail mode to make things a little easier when you are starting!
  • Anchoring. Think about the weather and check the conditions of the sea bed - sand, weed or rocks? - before deciding how much chain to let out. Get it wrong and your anchor will drag!
  • Mooring. Decide your best approach to the quay, step off the boat and secure your mooring lines. You can then opt to set up spring lines and even slip lines to help depart your mooring without embarrassment!
  • Charting. To the best of our knowledge eSail is the only simulator with a charting module which represents paper based charts. Use tools like dividers, plotter and pencil to plot your course, while looking out for lights from buoys and lighthouses to check your position.
  • The World of Shearwater. In our virtual world there are numerous places to visit within easy reach. Set in the mid Atlantic, the Shearwater Islands have been formed by volcanic activity and have changed hands many times. The Spanish, British, Americans and Italians have all left their mark – the latter building the folly known as Little Venice. This town has many buildings virtually identical to those found in the real Venice. The builders have thoughtfully created canals large enough to sail along with few bridges, so you can motor, sail and even race along the watery streets!
  • Weather. eSail models areas of high and low pressure which then move across the islands creating an infinite variety of wind and waves patterns. The wind and waves are further modified by the land masses, creating areas of calm where you can find shelter from the worst storms and anchor safely!

SailSim - Sailing Simulator

This sailing simulator applies actual physics to simulate the behavior of a boat. This means you can actually capsize or sink a boat if you are not careful. In some cases the sailing simulator can even reproduce unpredictable results based on your actions, selected parameters and conditions. The simulator was developed by a fellow sailor and a Live-Aboard who loves the sea and everything related to it. As such, many things included in the simulator have been taken from real life experiences.

Although by no means this should be considered as an exact replication of the actual sailing process, it does provide things you shall encounter when you step on any boat. If learning is not your thing, it is very addictive to just play with a sailboat and physics applied to it when the wind is howling outside and you have nothing better to do. Some controls and reactions of the sailing vessels in this simulator have been set intentionally in an awkward way and not as a typical Sailing Game would do it. This is done to try and replicate what you shall encounter when controlling a sailboat by yourself. I have many ideas and additions I would like to make to this simulator so if you like its direction, spread the word as I develop it under way or in a marina whenever my batteries are charged from solar or the engine.

Sailing Simulator - NED

NED is the world's best sailing simulator for teaching basic understanding of sail trim.

NED teaches you how to set the sails for every wind angle.

Before you play with NED, read this first.

The graphic below is representative of a real wind meter on a sailboat. You'll notice that the red triangle represents the relative position of the wind to the boat. On a real wind meter, the boat always faces up because you're always behind the meter. With NED, for simulation purposes and to give you a feel that the boat is turning when you activate the helm button, the boat turns with the helm but it immediately flicks back up to it's normal proper position. You'll notice the wind direction and the HDG (compass heading) have changed appropriately.

Hover over NED's components to gain a better understanding before you start poking and clicking. Then, you can turn off the tool tips button. Please enjoy our sailing simulator - NED.

Full instructions for NED are below .

NauticEd -- 21st Century Sailing Education

Have you taken NauticEd's FREE Online Sailing Course - basic sail trim?

INSTRUCTORS AND TEACHERS

How to use ned – the sailing simulator.

  • First - mouse over each of the elements of NED and you'll learn what they do.
  • NED is your virtual sailing instructor. NED will teach you how to correctly trim the sails on almost any sailboat with a mainsail and headsail.
  • Your sails will be correctly trimmed when your boat speed reaches its maximum for any particular wind speed and direction.
  • You can turn the boat into or away from the wind, let the sails out or tighten them up and you can adjust the speed of the wind.

NED represents the real world polar plot of a real racer cruiser sailboat. It’s the closest thing you can get to sailing instruction online.

Please play with NED. Once you've mastered NED – you'll be ready for real sail trim practice on the water.

NED is brought to you FREE by NauticEd – The World’s Most Advanced Online Sailing Education.

NED's Elements

The helm is controlled by the split button at the bottom center of NED.

Click the starboard split and the sailboat will turn to starboard. You'll notice the boat will straighten up once you have released the helm button. This is because on a real wind meter on a real boat the boat always stays pointing up and the meter tells you where the wind is in relation to your boat. Once the boat straightens up, you'll notice the wind angle and the heading will have changed according to how much you turned.

Hold the helm button down and the boat will turn 5 degrees every ½ second or so.

Sails are controlled by the winches which are located on port and starboard at the bottom of NED. The starboard winch controls the head sail. The port winch controls the mainsail.

NED gives you a number above each winch to represent the number of turns on the winch. The jib sheet is winched between 12 turns (all the way out) and 45 turns (all the way in). The main sail is winched between 5 turns (all the way out) and 35 turns (all the way in).

Wind Vector

The red triangular arrow located outside the wind dial represents where the wind is coming from. Click on the triangular arrow and you'll be able to adjust the speed of the wind. Initially, the wind starts at 60 degrees off your starboard bow.

The heading changes when you click or hold down the helm button. Initially you are heading north.

Efficiency Meter

The horizontal meter at the bottom of NED indicates to you how efficient your sails are trimmed.

If the meter is all the way to the left you have some trimming to do. If it's all the way to the right, your sails are perfectly trimmed and your boat speed should be maximized.

The closer your boat is trimmed to 30 degrees off the wind and the greater the wind speed, the greater will be the heel angle. This represents the real world and there is nothing you can do about it except reef your sails. NED may incorporate this feature in latter versions.

The changing depth meter merely simulates that you are moving. There is no control here. However in the real world you should always watch the depth.

About VS-NG

Virtual Sailor NG in an excellent nautical simulator, having excellent marine dynamics, this simulator allows you sail where ever you wish, to explore and customize your boats and to train yourself on all forms of virtual-sailing, boat simulator or ship simulator. Virtual Sailor NG was created by Ilan Papini, first version released on June 2021. Virtual Sailor NG brings the best of my experience in developing marine simulators, this experience began with the development of Virtual Sailor in the year 2001, later continued with Vehicle Simulator in the year 2009, Fire Flight in 2017, and finally Virtual Sailor NG in 2021. The program combines the best and most accurate physical models of vehicle dynamics and ocean waves simulation, and is based upon the innovative physical elements method developed for Vehicle Simulator. The program uses its own graphic engine, its netowrking library is based upon the ENet library using fast and reliable TCP/IP. All scenery and vehicles developed over the years for Virtual Sailor and Vehicle Simulator are fully working in VS_NG, and additional in game scenery design has been added. I hope people will enjoy this program, appreciate the big effort it took to make, and show appreciation by bying the program, Please avoid using illegal and pirated copies, for the small independant developer pirated software is the major cause of going out of business. Thanks, Ilan Papini

About Sailaway

Sailaway is a virtual sailing environment. It simulates sailing in various boats in a realistic way. The boats vary from a small wooden Nordic Folkboat to super fast racers like an Imoca with foils.

The MMO open world has the same size and shape as the real world. This also means that the sailing distances are the same as in the real world. Sailing from Europe to the US will take several weeks. But don't worry, because when you log off, your boat will continue to sail to the next waypoint

It is a multiplayer game for sailing where you may encounter other boats, sail together on the same boat or compete against others in races. The are many races and other sailing events like flottiljas organized in Sailaway by the active community.

During your sailing journey, you will experience the same weather as the real world experiences. When it storms in the real world, there will be a storm with dark clouds and huge waves in the virtual world as well. And when there is no wind in the real world, your boat will float helplessly in the vast ocean waiting for a breeze, while there is nothing you can do.

Sailing in this sailing simulation is more than plotting a course and setting sail. You need to raise and reef your sails, pull the sheets and adjust all the trim lines yourself. If you are not an expert in this, there are various difficulty levels that will help you. The trim lines have an immediate visible effect on the shape of the sails and the boat will react accordingly.

Many people without any sailing experience have become true sailors by learning the basics of sailing in Sailaway. There is even a public school that uses Sailaway to educate the children in sailing. But also experienced sailors improved their sailing skills with Sailaway. It helps them with a better understanding of sail trim and tactics through practice.

The position of the sun, moon, the planets and the stars is simulated accurately for the position of your boat and the time. This also means that it may be pitch dark when you log in if your boat is on a latitude and longitude that is currently in the dark.

The buoys, lights and other seamarks of the real world are also present in the virtual environment of Sailaway. You will find the coastal waters at night filled with the rhythmic flashing of red, white and green lights according to their light signatures. They are a perfect way to practice your navigation skills.

Sailaway II and Sailaway III

The current available version of the sailing simulation is Sailaway II and a new version called Sailaway III is in development.

Sailaway II has been around for a while and many sailors enjoy it on a daily basis. It has everything needed for a fun time on the virtual waters and will continue to be supported after Sailaway III is released. The two versions will co-exist, because some sailor swill prefer this version or have a computer that is not powerful enough for Sailaway III.

A lot of development time has gone into Sailaway II and as it often goes with projects that are close to the heart: When it is finished, you have learned so much about the details, the structure and the design, that you know exactly how you would build it the next time. Often there is no next time due to budgetary reasons. But sailing is too addictive to ignore that itch. This is why a new project was started in 2020. A project with no deadline and no boundaries. It will be released as Sailaway III in 2024, but is in fact a completely new sailing simulation game. More about the development of Sailaway III...

In the first sprint of Q3, it turned out to be a one second win by Comocean over CriticalHippo. Twenty seconds later Flamingo rounded out the podium nipping Ryba by 2 seconds. Rounding Charlton Island it was key to keep a tight course until the final leg to the finish when it was decision time and how far to play the angles and wind shift verses performance loss and how many tacks to put it. In a sprint the tiniest mistakes can cost you. Read the report by CriticalHippo to find out more.

Auckland to San Francisco 2024 - RESULTS

yacht simulator online

The sailing competition began with an impressive turnout of 161 participants, with 116 boats setting sail right on schedule. Within just 9 hours, the fleet experienced a split. The majority of boats tacked eastward, while a scattered group continued northwards on a starboard tack. After one day, the eastern group divided further, as a handful of boats aimed even farther east, leaving the main contingent to form a 'middle group.' Along the way, a few boats diverged from the main group, some heading west and others east. bonknhoot, well-positioned for observing the manoeuvrings several hours astern of the leading boats in the ‘middle group’, inspired perhaps by the worldwide election fever in-the-real-world, suggested in Chat that it seemed to him to be more about politics than geography. Careful, he said, not to express any type of opinion, he saw the following parties vying for victory... 1. the Radical (aka Extreme) Left led by AWoL, with fringe follower LUNATIC; Their names a pure coincidence. 2. the Committed Left, led by Zorba777 the Greek. Another nomenclated coincidence, he supposed. 3. the Right Left, led by Veter, who had moved over from the Right to the Left. Was it a paradox that he flies the Russian flag? 4. the Left (of) Center, a small faction led by Sax747, an old-style Italian. 5. the Centrists, his own party, led by another Italian, ita10267, who he thought was perhaps switching to the Right, but in fact was just aligning with the party line.   6. the Right (of) Center, where there was a leadership contest between Leelu22, FreyjaUSA and TarrassBoulba. Is it a surprise that Right (of) Center is polling in the lead? 7. the Quite Right (or is that Quiet Right), a party of one, Grecale in stealth mode. 8. the Proper Right, led by another Italian, at the time in the lead in the polls overall, the one-and-only SCARABOCCHIO, sipping wine and munching cheese. 9. and finally, the Radical Right, who were all-over-the-place and few-and-far-between; Rick1_95, SimeMali, Arronax21, bmd and ibis. Who was going to win the election? The eastern right-wing groups initially lagged, trailing by as much as 180 nautical miles after one week. However, they managed to recover, overtaking the middle centrist groups on day 16. Meanwhile, the western left-wing group successfully navigated north of the high-pressure system at 33°N, enjoying a very favourable beam-to-broad reach, while the rest of the fleet struggled against headwinds and had to sail at a close haul. The podium positions were solidified by day 25, with 84 hours and 830 nautical miles remaining to the finish and it was a landslide victory for the left-wing led by Zorba777 the Greek, on a rich vein of form since his return to SOL from a sabbatical. The right-wing eastern group secured 'second' place, finishing 1 day and 7 hours behind the left-wing’s leader, while the centrist middle group came in 'third', 1 day and 12 hours behind the winner. All-in-all, a proper simulation, and further incisive insights and possibly parables on what went on have been provided by Zorba777 himself and wsguerin also form the Left, under the buttons above. Well worth a read!

Haida Gwaii 2024 - RESULTS

yacht simulator online

A change in the weather forecast just before the start meant that the previously better southern route near Prescott Island suddenly lost compared to the northern route over Stephens Island. This probably caused the fleet to be divided into two main parts. Supporters of the northern route and a bigger group of supporters of the southern route. The next WX change confirmed the advantage of the northern group and at last, the race was decided. Ultimately, the victory went to WRmirekd , who led from the beginning of the race. FreyjaUSA , alert as usual, took second place after TarassBoulba's rudder failure. CriticalHippo took advantage of the moment when Zorba was at BBQ and took third place on the podium. Be sure to read the report. The best from the southern group, justmer8 , reached the finish line only in 10th place, over two hours behind the leader. Congratulations to the winners and those who made the race more interesting by choosing the southern route.

Pantaenius Shetland Race 2024 - Leg 2 - RESULTS

yacht simulator online

The second leg of the 2024 Pantaenius Shetland Race was nothing short of exhilarating. After a spectacular first leg, our dedicated SOLers departed from the stunning shores of Bergen, Norway, in their sleek Finngulf 43s, heading back to Lerwick. The North Sea, with its unpredictable weather, provided challenging yet excellent conditions, putting every SOLer's skills to the ultimate test. As the race unfolded over 190 nautical miles, the excitement never waned. The high-performance Finngulf 43s, crafted by Farr Yacht Design, navigated through the tricky waters, each SOLer vying for the lead. The competition was fierce, and the strategic maneuvers kept everyone on edge. After nearly 26 grueling hours, WRmirekd of Poland was the first to appear over the horizon, securing a well-deserved victory. In a nail-biting finish, Patrick70119 of South Africa crossed the line just 5 seconds later, taking second place. TarassBoulba of France completed the podium, coming in third!

Cool Virtual Sailing Simulator

Circumnavigate the globe from the comfort of your own living room.

Sailaway simulator

Feel like going sailing but don't want to drive to the marina? Kick back in your La-Z-Boy, fire up your computer, and start tacking. A new sailing simulator called Sailaway lets you command a 38-foot cruiser, a 45-foot wooden yacht, or if you're feeling feisty, a Mini-Transat racer.

Featuring accurately modeled waves and water color based on your location (waves and wave behavior differs from ocean to ocean), and day and night skies, Sailaway is the most advanced sailing simulator on the market.

The lifelike settings let you sail across the Pacific if you want, through real (virtual) waves and spray, subtly trimming in whatever wind speed you chose. The sails will dutifully luff if you're not paying attention, and there's a whole range of sailing instruments to keep your attention. The program allows you to virtually sail and even race with other armchair sailors around the world.

Sailaway simulator detail

The level of detail is impressive.

OrbCreation has re-created the oceans of the planet with unparalleled accuracy with a detailed world map. In Sailaway, making a trip across the Pacific takes months, just as it would on a real boat. With a persistent online world, adjust your settings and your boat will continue to sail even if you aren't online.

Receive updates via email as your boat continues its progress, but don't forget to check in often — with real-time weather data pulled from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), conditions can change in just a few hours.

"Sailaway started as an experiment to see if it would be feasible to create a sailboat that responds to sail trim changes," says Richard Knol, the one-man development force behind Sailaway, "but it soon transformed into a full-time passion project, in which every aspect of sailing was being implemented in the most comprehensive way possible."

Published by new independent games publisher, The Irregular Corporation and developed by OrbCreation, the ultimate sailing simulator is compatible for PC and Mac for $39.99. You'll need a stout computer for the processor-hungry graphics, but you won't have to fight traffic or clean up the boat afterward.

Wärtsilä simulators to support Singapore's Wavelink Maritime Institute with preparing crew for shipping's sustainable fuels

Wärtsilä has supplied its new dual-fuel engine simulator technology for WMI, which was recently inaugurated by H.E. Ms. Grace FU Hai Yien, Minister for Sustainability and the Environment and Minister-

Technology group Wärtsilä has supplied its new  dual-fuel engine simulator technology  for Wavelink Maritime Institute (WMI), the maritime training arm of the Singapore Maritime Officer’s Union (SMOU). The navigational and technological simulators are a central feature of the simulation suite at WMI, which was recently inaugurated by H.E. Ms. Grace FU Hai Yien, Minister for Sustainability and the Environment and Minister-in-charge of Trade Relations of the Republic of Singapore.

Sustainable fuels will play an integral role in the maritime industry’s goal of achieving net zero in shipping by 2050. However, an important part of this transition requires crew to be upskilled to handle these new and alternative fuels. The state-of-the-art Wärtsilä simulator technology is specifically designed to train seafarers in the latest efficiency concepts and prepare them for operating with the next generation of marine fuels. The dual-fuel simulators include a virtual reality element to replicate realistic scenarios with different fuels and engine types. They also incorporate cloud-based simulation combined with Wavelink’s own learning management system to provide blended learning experiences.

"Seafarers today must continue to reskill and upskill, particularly in the areas of decarbonisation and new alternative fuels. Wärtsilä’s advanced simulator technology allows us to provide the highest quality maritime training, ensuring that our students are fully in step with the transition currently underway in the shipping industry," says Mr Teo Keong Kok, Managing Director, Wavelink Maritime Institute.

The simulation suite also includes a full-mission bridge with 270-degree visualisation, and a part-task bridge with 120-degree visualisation for ultimate hands-on ship handling training in compliance with international standards. The technical simulators include full-mission and multi-functional network class-room set-ups for engine-room and liquid cargo handling training.

"We are pleased to continue our strong relationship with WMI”, comments Kiran Kumar, Product Sales Manager at Wärtsilä Marine. “Climate regulation is pushing for constant improvement in fuel efficiency to drive down emissions meaning alternative and transition fuels will play a significant role in achieving these goals. The new simulation suite with Wärtsilä technology provides realistic training opportunities that will allow their graduates to safely operate technologically advanced vessels, whilst preparing them for shipping’s decarbonised future."

Wärtsilä began its partnership with WMI in 2014 with the launch of a maritime simulation centre, including a class of 16 workstations. An integrated engine room and liquid cargo handling simulator class of 20 workstations was also delivered for the training of engineering watchkeeping personnel.

In a world of moving pictures, photographs capture indelible moments in Trump assassination attempt

Image

The photograph of a bloodied Donald Trump with his fist in the air and an American flag looming in the background is quickly emerging as the pivotal image of Saturday’s shooting , and it wouldn’t exist without a journalist who acted quickly and on a hunch.

Video of the assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania rally filled television screens before it was even clear what had happened. Yet the work of The Associated Press’ Evan Vucci, Getty’s Anna Moneymaker and Doug Mills of The New York Times — whose picture caught apparent evidence of a bullet whizzing past Trump’s head — proved the enduring potency of still photography in a world driven by a flood of moving pictures.

Associated Press photojournalist Evan Vucci has covered former President Donald Trump for years, but what occurred on Saturday in Butler, Pennsylvania was a time stopping moment in history, and Vucci recounts his experience from the rally with Trump.

Vucci’s image, one of many he took on Saturday, could also have political implications from many directions — as indelible images often do in the days and years after seismic events happen.

“Without question, Evan’s photo will become the definitive photo from the (assassination) attempt,” said Patrick Witty, a former photo editor at Time, The New York Times and National Geographic. “It captures a range of complex details and emotions in one still image — the defiantly raised fist, the blood, the agents clamoring to push Trump off stage and, most importantly, the flag. That’s what elevates the photo.”

Image

The New York Post ran the photo across the tabloid’s front page on Sunday with a headline describing the former president as “bloodied but unbowed.” Time magazine has put it on its cover. “A legendary American photograph,” The Atlantic wrote in a headline over a story about the image.

It all made one thing clear: After more than 175 years of photography, freezing a moment in time for posterity remains as powerful as recounting it in video — and, sometimes, even more so.

An immediate recognition of the power of the captured moment

Many news photographers, including AP’s Gene Puskar, were on assignment in various locations around Saturday’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, about 30 miles north of Pittsburgh. Vucci was one of four stationed between the stage and audience. Covering a political rally is a routine assignment the Washington-based journalist has done hundreds of times; left unspoken is the duty to be in position if history beckons in the manner that it did Saturday.

When he heard popping sounds, Vucci, who has covered combat situations in Iraq and Afghanistan, said he knew instantly it was gunfire. He rushed to the stage at Trump’s right, but his view of the former president was quickly blocked by Secret Service agents. He sensed that the agents would try to hustle Trump offstage and into a vehicle from the other side, so he darted over there.

From that position, he said, “everything kind of opened up for me.”

Trump’s attempts to rise to his feet and pump his fist gave Vucci a clear view of the ex-president. He said the blue sky and flag in the background were an important part of the composition. “I think that kind of told the story of where we are right now,” he said.

Witty, like some others, compared it to Joe Rosenthal’s AP photo of U.S. Marines raising the American flag on Iwo Jima in World War II — an image so memorable to so many that it inspired a memorial.

“I think it will last and come to symbolize the time that we’re in,” said Ron Burnett, former president of the Emily Carr University of Art and Design and an expert on images.

The intersection of imagery and politics

The presence of the flag may prove a lightning rod, because it also makes the photo a potent political image — in keeping with the increased politicization of the Stars and Stripes in the years since the 9/11 attacks. “Already one of the most iconic photographs in American history — and one that I suspect will propel Donald Trump back to the White House,” British journalist Piers Morgan wrote on X.

The photo with the full flag from Saturday has already been used 2,327 times by Sunday evening, while another Vucci image — one without the full flag — had been used 1,759 times by AP media customers, the news organization said. Typically, the most-used photo for a full week is seen 700 or 800 times.

It’s not hard to imagine the flag-draped image being seen in Trump campaign advertisements or paraphernalia, much like his mug shot from his Georgia arrest quickly did. At least one website was already selling T-shirts with the photo on them.

“I can see it being used in a whole variety of ways as part of the entourage of images that he surrounds himself with,” said Burnett, who marveled at Trump’s ability to seemingly be conscious of how it would all look in the midst of such a traumatic experience.

Vucci said that how the image is used in the public discourse is not for him to worry about. “The way I look at it is, I was present and I did my job,” said Vucci, who won a 2021 Pulitzer Prize for his work covering demonstrations following the George Floyd shooting. “I kept my head and I told the story.”

There was other impressive work by photographers at the scene. Getty’s Moneymaker, for example, caught an extraordinarily intimate image of Trump on the floor of the stage, taken peephole-style through the legs of a Secret Service agent shielding him.

Mills’ photograph for The Times is one of a series that shows Trump reaching for his ear after it had been hit. In one of them, barely visible unless the photo is blown up, there’s a streak behind Trump’s head that likely illustrates the displacement of air from a fast-moving projectile, according to a retired FBI special agent quoted in the newspaper. Learn To Sail with eSail

eSail works hand in hand with shore-based and practical courses:

  • Provides a way of practising and refreshing skills
  • Includes a complete sailing course – ‘Learn Yachting with eSail’ with 17 detailed tutorials.
  • 5 Advanced Tutorials
  • Sailing skills such as reefing, mooring, charting and anchoring are included.
  • Works to support practical and theory training courses from organisations such as US Sailing and the RYA .
  • Includes challenges to master your skills, such as races, treasure hunts and steering challenges.
  • eSail can be enjoyed by beginners and competent sailors.
  • Can be used in sailing classes by qualified instructors.

The tutorials take you on a virtual journey, during which you raise the sails, practice reefing, try mooring and learn good anchoring technique. eSail also includes a charting tool with plotter and dividers so you can try out navigation.

Finally you arrive at sunset at Maxwell Marina, by which time you are familiar with handling your boat using sails and engine. Once you have completed the course you will be ready to navigate around the ‘legendary’ Shearwater Islands and voyage the high seas.

And with the Man Overboard Add-On you can learn Man Overboard skills with tutorials and challenges created in conjunction with Keith Cowell, the author of the RYA’s Sea Survival Handbook .

You can also take part in challenges including treasure hunts, races, steering and anchoring competitions. eSail is not really a racing game (although there are races), it’s software that aims to make you a better sailor. So all the challenges have a valid training purpose. For instance, the treasure hunts help you develop steering and throttle control; the races give you a greater awareness of what is round you and the ability to multitask; the anchoring challenges help you assess the sea bed, wind and estimate the likely circle your boat will follow as the wind changes.

So eSail is the perfect tool for learning new skills, refreshing old skills and having fun in the process.

Learn to sail with eSail!

Unlike other simulators which are mainly aimed at racing, eSail is designed to help you learn real sailing skills which can be transferred into the real world. And sailing instructors can use eSail to demonstrate specific techniques. For example, winding a line onto a winch correctly.

eSail has been designed to fill the gap between theory and practical training. Books, training manuals, classroom based or online courses are all essential tools, but nothing can beat being out on the water to really learn how to sail.

But for many people, the opportunities to sail yachts comes only once or twice a year on the annual vacation. eSail now provides a way of being out on the water, and enjoying learning new sailing skills while navigating the virtual seas.

USER POST 21 July 2021 (Sorel Mitra)

I was also following a RYA course and preparing the theory for RYA Day Skipper before Covid hit. Ever since I’ve been only sim sailing and here’s what I’ve found after 170+ hours on eSail:

I believe its real power comes not from its tutorials but from:

– It really helps you wrap your mind around deck & cockpit activities. In my first hours on it I found it really difficult mental work to do all the actions for raising sails or reefing. I struggled a lot to remember the steps and what line to ease, let go, or pull. After many hours on eSail I’ve recently found that I now perform sail activities almost as a second nature: raise, reef, lower, tack, gybe, change headsail. I even managed to raise & adjust the newly added gennaker on my own w/o hitting the tutorial.

– It helps understanding points of sail in a “practical” way – of course the sim boat is different from real boats, but then real boats also differ between each other so what I learned is that you need to adapt to your boat – the theory helps but what you need to do is watch and feel your boat and then I guess you’ll be able to do this on real boats as well. Initially I was trying to set the sails “by the book” and kept struggling with that. Once I started “feeling” the sim boat (watching what she does and remembering how sails work) I began being able to trim the sails to 1) gather a decent speed 2) steady the boat 3) avoid excessive helm – On certain points of sail I’m even able to take my hands off the helm (without autopilot!) and have the boat follow a course I chose

– No tide or currents but I believe it has leeway so your course is altered by that. Also in heavy wind it’s quite difficult to maintain a steady course so go ahead and estimate your position if you can! Not sure yet if leeway is a thing but at least dead reckoning can be practiced – get out of any land sight, take a target in the middle of the ocean in lat/long coordinates and try to hit it without ever looking at your GPS. Estimate your position and once you believe you hit your target compare that with the sim GPS. As the Shearwater islands are at some coordinates in the Atlantic, you can use Open CPN for your chart work outside the coverage of the available sim charts.

– Get used to estimating and plotting your position on the chart on the hour. Leave the sim running (perhaps with autopilot on, or for more challenge without it), go do your other activities and try not to forget to plot your EP on the chart (Open CPN or sim chart). Try to estimate the average speed and course. Do that for a few hours and then compare your EP with sim GPS – how far are you from that?

– Pilotage. Draw your pilotage plan and follow it. This helps before you get to learn the islands by heart. Ignore the GPS/plotter and pilot your boat with your pilotage plan.

– It helps build coordination. You do have “crew” but I feel more like I’m solo sailing where I need to hold the helm, adjust the sails, watch-out for that nasty ship that’s chasing you to run you down, keep an eye on the depth and so on.

– It helps make you a decision maker. You’re in Virginia passage determined to beat to wind and the nasty ship appears ahead of you. Try not to run away with your engine and find a way to stay clear of that ship while still in control of your boat. Or you’re heading straight between two rocks believing you can pass between them and the depth is rapidly changing. You just stare at it as I did and run aground or do a last-minute tack or gybe to escape the danger?

– It adds real value with mooring. I guess it’s not easy to get to practice mooring with real boats – there’s always the danger of hitting something. With the sim boat you don’t care and have a chance to learn the basics. I know real-life conditions are different but once you realize that it helps you get your head around mooring at a pontoon – the sim wind pushes you real hard and it has quite a few narrow places where you’ll find you need to balance your speed – too low and the wind pushes you around, too high and it’s hard to control the boat. Try mooring to a pontoon on the inside of Port Fogarty in 30kn of wind and you’ll see what I mean. Of course, don’t cheat by using different camera views. Stay at the helm and try to get a sense of the length of the boat, how she moves, how the wind pushes her – I think this helps with real boats in the same way people that learn how to drive cars make good use of car driving simulators.

In short I believe there’s nothing like being on a real boat, but lacking that, or if you’re mostly crewing instead of skippering that real boat, a simulator can help at least wrapping your mind around the usual skipper activities so when you hit that real boat at least you have the proper mindset.
