The intended use will either be racing, recreational, or both. The good thing is, as long as the boat is well kept and In good condition, it will work for both options.

The first thing to check is the hull. Make sure it is solid and has no holes or soft spots. The next thing to check is to see if it comes with everything you need. I once was given a laser boat, but it was just the hull and nothing else. I actually ended up selling it. It was not a project I wanted to take on. I wish I had it today though.

The Parts Of A Laser Sailboat
The laser has a few different parts that you need to know about.
First, we have the mast. The mast is a two-part mast that can be adjusted depending on the size of the sail you are using. It gets set into the mast step, which is a hole in the hull where the mast goes.
Second, we have the sails. There are 3 different sizes of sails you can use on your laser. The size will depend on your weight. You need to have good balance for the laser sailboat and sail size will help accomplish this. The three sails are listed below:
You can also use the smaller sails for high winds. Each sail will also contain 3 battens.

The third is the daggerboard. The daggerboard goes down through a slot in the hull. You put it all the way down for upwind, up for downwind, and middle for reaching. The daggerboard is a type of keel.
Fourth is the rudder. the rudder will be down when sailing and needs to be kept tight. If it kicks up on you, you will lose the ability to steer the boat.
The fifth part of the boat is the boom. You will not be able to use your sails without the boom. It is very similar looking to the mast. Just make sure when you purchase your boat, that you have both the mast and the boom.
The sixth and final part you need is the tiller. The tiller is what controls your rudder and allows you to steer the boat. You will also want a tiller extender. The extender will allow you to control the boat when leaning out over the high side for balance.
Those 6 parts are the most necessary components to check for when purchasing a laser sailboat. You will also need the lines for raising and lowering sails, but I’m sure you know about those.
My Final Thoughts About The Laser Sailboat
The laser sailboat is a lot of fun for beginners and experienced sailors. They are fairly cheap and easy to use. There is a part of balance required to use them, but it should come pretty easy with some practice. I would love to own a laser, but at this time I do not. They are great for racing as well. It's been a little while coming and ever since we heard about this new boat being created by Laser Performance we've been excited about the arrival of the Laser Cascais .
Designed by Bill Tripp the Cascais is named with a nod to fun sailing, beach and sea. The old north French cai or “sand bank” – quay in English – and cais in Portuguese – also pays homage to the Portuguese coastal resort town of Cascais , which is renowned as a world-class sailing venue and host of numerous international sailing events and races. LaserPerformance is proud that the Cascais is the first of several boats developed and built in Portugal.

A stock of rope and cordage is essential for the proper function of any sailing club. Floating and non-floating rope are needed equally. This is a good product, at a reasonable price - if bought on the reel.
My first Zhik spray top, but just like the rest of the gear from Zhik the combination of design, material selection and style are spot on. I’ve been wearing the top in the Dragon, Edinburgh Cup where there has been a rain and significant spray at time. The top has kept me warm and dry. Especially impressed with the neck seal. Dry, yet not constricting.

I bought some kingfisher spliceable rope to replace a continuous control line. It's an easy splice and that's down to the quality of the rope supplied by the Sailing Chandlery.

I actually bought my Laser from Sailing Pro Shop. Just another option for those looking.
How much can I expect to get for my laser. It is three years old and sailed only a few times. It is not banged up at all. It was stored in our garage over the winter with a cover. We paid 15,000 for it. We are in NH, the lakes region.
Hi Marie That depends on many factors, including the age and condition of your Laser sailboat. But on top of this, it also depends on what others are selling for in your area. This is often a good starting point – checking the price of other Lasers dinghies in the area. So spend some time researching to get a good idea of what is a realistic sale price. Any tips for selling a Laser? I have it posted on three sailing sites, including sailingforums.com, craigslist, and facebook. I have a 2007 Laser in excellent condition rarely sailed and never in salt water.

This is a 2006 Vanguard Laser sailboat in Excellent condition. This boat was used in the 2006 laser radial world championships and comes with the radial sail that was used, the sail has Volvo and FRA written on it and the sail number is a registered number with the ILCA North American region. This boat comes with everything you need to go sailing or racing it has a light weight trailer, complete radial sail and mast, complete full sail and mast, all the rigging, dagger board, rudder (does have a chip out of edge), carbon fiber tiller, hull cover, top cover, and mast bag. This boat was made in the USA and was bought from Sayre Sailing out of Charleston SC. The boat sails fast and all the gear is in excellent condition. ZUMA Sailboat and Trailer

This is a beautiful ZUMA sailboat with a Trailex aluminum trailer. It is a Vanguard built boat that has only been sailed a few dozen times. It has been covered or garaged for most of its life, and it shows. As the pictures taken in the last year or so attest, it looks wonderful. The ZUMA was made by the same folks who build the Laser; but the ZUMA, in my opinion, is much nicer to sail with two people than the Laser. It is a fun boat that is not as high in performance as the Laser, but is easier to set up, and requires, perhaps, less athleticism too. It does move along quite nicely. Beginners can sail this boat; or folks like me, with over thirty years of sailing experience, can enjoy it too. The ZUMA is good for any age sailor that has been properly taught. It takes just minutes to set up, and requires little maintenance. It has a zippered luff, so that the sail can be raised and lowered with a halyard; meaning the mast does not have to be lifted in and out every time like a Laser. The boat only weighs 130 pounds and can be towed by most any car out there with a hitch (check your manual, though). Trailer and all, the towing weight is only around 275 pounds; thanks to the lightweight trailer. This boat looks like it is only a year or so old, and comes with nifty extras. The NORTH sail is in wonderful, almost new, shape. But that's not all. I include a virtually new Neil Pryde sail too. Both sails are very nice looking. It has a Harken tiller extension on a beautiful laminated tiller, and the single bulkhead port has been expanded to two, with storage bags in each. The lines are all like new and bright in color. The traveler block set is upgraded to the one piece design from the Laser. This package includes a new rudder cover and a new centerboard storage bag. I include a HAWK wind indicator and other little extras. The SILVA compass was standard on the ZUMA, and is, of course, included. The Trailex aluminum trailer supports the boat by the gunwales to avoid stress on the bottom. The tires (with galvanized rims) are less than two years old, and I will include a brand new spare with galvanized rim. Spare tire is not mounted on trailer; but can be stowed in trunk of car or such. The trailer comes with LED lights, too. There is also a custom Sunbrella boat cover included. The cover, as would be expected, is the one thing that shows the most signs of wear. It has done its job of protecting the boat, though, and should continue to so so for quite some time to come. New covers should be readily available when this one needs replacing. Pictures tell a good story; but here is some additional information regarding those pictures. The sailing pictures were taken in 2014 on the Intracoastal Waterway near Pensacola Beach. Most pictures show the boat before the second port was added. Some ZUMA's had either one or two, for seemingly no rhyme or reason. The boat looks much more balanced with two, and it's handy for extra storage too. Storage bags for the ports are included; along with a small oar that can be stored inside the hull. The oar was sized to fit right through the port. The ZUMA logo on the top of the boat was removed earlier this year. I hated it, and thought the boat looked much more refined without it. I had no intention of selling it when it was removed, but you could always have a sign shop do a logo to pretty much match it, if you were so inclined. The boat has some crazing of the gelcoat here and there, and there are a few scratches, but none of that detracts from the overall beauty of the boat. There is normal wear and tear on the trailer, but once again, it looks like a year or two old package. You have to see it to appreciate it. The boat is in Tennessee and if you are within driving distance, it awaits your inspection. I have sailed for over thirty years and take really good care of my boats. This boat was owned originally by a friend who takes, perhaps, even better care of his boats. It is almost impossible to believe how good this boat looks for its age. Nothing's perfect, but this boat could be a Christmas gift come true for someone wanting to mess about in small boats. New boats of this type start at prices of 5,000 and up; and the Trailex trailer alone sells for about 1,100.00. A spare sail and extras make this all even more worthwhile. Powerman 5000 is an industrial metal band from Boston, Massachusetts, US. The band formed in 1991 and has released several notable albums in the nu metal and hard rock scene.
The band initially consisted of one member, Michael David Cummings – aka Spider One, who has been the core member of the band throughout its formation. Spider One formed the band after he dropped at of art school and began recording music on a 4-track recorder. Spider One is also highly notable for being the brother of fellow metal musician, Rob Zombie. Spider One soon recruited Adam Williams – aka Adam 12 – to be the lead guitarist in the band. Bassist Dorian 27 and drummer Al 3 would later complete the original lineup.
In 1994 the band released their debut EP “True Force”. Just one year after the band released their EP they independently released their debut album “The Blood-Splat Rating System”. The album was a great success in their hometown and sold out of its initial pressing. The success of the album garnered the band a major label contract with DreamWorks Records. The label later reissued the album under the title “Mega!! Kung Fu Radio”.
In 1999 the band enlisted M.33 on guitars and released their highly successful album “Tonight the Stars Revolt!”. The album helped the band break into the mainstream and conveyed a unique mixture of science fiction and rock. The album contained the singles “Tonight the Stars Revolt!”, “Supernova Goes Pop”, “Nobody’s Real”, and “When Worlds Collide”. The album also did quite well on the Billboard chart reaching No. 29 on the Billboard 200. The album contained elements of campy science fiction influences as well as a cover of “Good Times Roll” by The Cars.
In the early 2000s Dorian 27 and Al3 would leave the band and were replaced by Ad7 and Siggy Sjursen. The band also gained buzz for their cover version of “Relax” by Frankie Goes to Hollywood. The cover song gained huge exposure when it was used in the 2001 film Zoolander. In 2003 the band released the album “Transform”, which took a more direct punk approach as opposed to the heavy industrial metal that the band was used to producing. The album reached the No. 27 position on the Billboard 200 and contained the singles “Free” and “Action”.
In 2006 the band released their fifth studio album “Destroy What You Enjoy”. The album contained the single “Wild World” and showed the band further shifting from industrial rock to punk rock. In 2009 the band released an album called “Somewhere on the Other Side of Nowhere”, which showed the band returning to their more industrial roots. The album contained the singles “Super Villain” and “V Is for Vampire”. In 2014 Powerman 5000 released the album “Builders of the Future”, which reached the No. 2 position on Billboard’s Top Hard Rock Albums. The album also featured the single “How to be a Human”, which placed on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Tracks.
The band is also known for their live performances and has played many headlining shows as well as performed at major festivals such as Ozzfest. Powerman 5000 has also been featured on many soundtracks including “Bride of Chucky”, “End of Days”, “Little Nicky”, and “Scream 3”.

Probably best known to video games fans of a certain age - their track ‘When Worlds Collide’ seems to have popped up in countless titles, with Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 and WWE Smackdown a couple of examples that spring straight to mind - Powerman 5000 have nevertheless both managed to prolong their career by a couple of decades, at this point, and make a name for themselves as alternative metal veterans in the process. Granted, their only original member today is frontman Spider One - who, by the way, is Rob Zombie’s younger brother - but that isn’t to say that they don’t deserve credit for the way in which their stylistic versatility has afforded them a long career; they were ripe for nu metal, meeting with the most sucess around the time that genre was huge. 1999’s Tonight the Stars Revolt! remains their best-known album, but they’ve dropped a further six since, including last May’s Builders of the Future. In support of it, they’ve jsut completed a string of European festival dates as well as a lengthy tour in the U.S.; Spider One remains an uncompromising frontman, too, bringing an irrepressible energy to proceedings whilst his guitarists alternate between bouncing and headbanging either side of him.

All the bands were awesome! They would even come over to the merchandise after to sign autographs and take pictures with fans. The merchandise was great. I went in the line 3 times. The bands enjoy talking to the crowd in between songs, which I love. The staff was also great. My car actually broke down and one of the staff members came over and helped us out, which was really cool. Overall, I give the concert 5 of 5 stars
Loved this show!!! First time I saw Powerman was Rochester Ny at the armory... I may have been too sick to stand but worth getting out and seeing them rock the stage!!! Incredible energy and The Royal is an awesome venue... New to the area and definitely will be back for sure!
Singer sadly couldn't come because he threw out his voice a day before and the show was cancelled, fair enough. The Venue however is a different story. They said they'd refund me and it's almost been a week. Trying to get in contact with the venue is also a fucking pain.
Powerman 5000 never showed up and that was the only band we drove so far to see.....very dissapointed!!! Would be great to get a partial refund or something...we watched some of the other bands but didnt even know who they were....sad
This is one of the best shows I have seen in a while.
Powerman 5000 is not only a great recording band, but they are also very good performers.
I would gladly see them every time they are in town!

Powerman 5000 Announce New Album “Abandon Ship” & Summer Tour With Sponge, Tantric, Etc.
Platinum-certified alternative metal outfit Powerman 5000 will be putting out a new album titled “ Abandon Ship ” on May 10th through Cleopatra Records . Fans can look for the first single, “ 1999 “, to arrive on April 11th.
A Perfect Circle ‘s Matt McJunkins assisted with the production of this outing, while the CD version of it will include a revamped version of the 2001 Powerman 5000 track “ Bombshell “.

This summer, the stars will revolt!
The nostalgia is in full swing as '90s nü-metal band Powerman 5000 announce their 20th anniversary tour for their classic album Tonight The Stars Revolt.
Though they released their ninth studio album New Wave just as recently as 2017, Tonight The Stars Revolt is where the band gained most of their fame, with hits like When Worlds Collide and Supernova Goes Pop. PM5K did not settle for anything less than extravagant, drawing in millions of punks and metalheads with their spiked hair and leather jackets, and keeping them with their enigmatic, yet catchy, rhythms, odd music videos, and iconic lyrics . The band will surely be expecting a majority of the audience to be nostalgic adults longing to temporarily relive the weirdness of '90s industrial metal.
Tonight The Stars Revolt sticks to themes of science fiction, cyberpunk, and nihilism, and PM5K will undoubtedly make this tour nothing less than a production. Powerman 5000’s Spider One Talks ‘Builders of the Future,’ Band’s Evolution + More
Powerman 5000 are back! Spider One and his crew are returning with their 'Builders of the Future' album on May 27 and the frontman took a few moments to speak with 'Loudwire Nights' host Full Metal Jackie about the new disc.
The vocalist opened up about the journey to discovering their current sound, shared some of his musical influences and also discussed what it's like seeing culture catch up with the Sci-fi and comic worlds he's always supported fully. Loudwire Nights, Full Metal Jackie. With us on the show tonight, Spider from Powerman 5000. How are you my friend?
I am great, how are you?
I’m great, I’m happy to hear from you and happy there’s finally some new music from Powerman 5000. Brand new album, 'Builders of the Future' coming out May 27. Spider, you’ve been something of a chameleon throughout your career, implementing different musical styles as part of the Powerman 5000 sound. What triggers the direction you take with new music specifically this new album?
You’re right, over the years, that’s been the center of this band is that it’s a very bizarre eclectic mix of stuff. Electronic, metal and new wave, punk rock. Somehow we’ve combined it all to make some sort of sound that makes sense to someone somewhere. Honestly, for this album it was in a weird way trying to not change it that much, which is the opposite of what I usually do. On the last album, 'Somewhere on the Otherside of Nowhere,' I kind of wholeheartedly got back to that sound that we created on 'Tonight the Stars Revolt!,' which is that electronic mixed with metal, the sci-fi undertone. It felt great to get back to that.
For once in my life I was happy with where the band was at. I felt confident in that’s what we are and that’s what we do. For this album, instead of trying to switch it up, I just wanted to continue with that and make it a better version of that. I feel like the wandering and experimenting is maybe over and finally coming to terms with exactly what I should be doing.
As a kid starting to make music, you were inspired by the minimalist approach of bands such as The Clash and Black Flag. What aspect of that simplicity still inspires you now? How did it affect 'Builders of the Future'?
That’s where I always start. That punk rock kid in me has never gone away. I’ve always valued aggression and attitude over technique. I just think that there’s -- ultimately that’s what great rock music is. Whether you are a punk rock band or a metal band, or an electronic band or whatever it is you do. I always try to start from that attitude, although on this record I definitely tried to push myself a little more vocally. We did some things I haven’t done in the past, in terms of maybe some melodic stuff or sneaking in some subtle harmonies here and there you would have never imagined 20 years ago. It always does come back to that -- those are the bands that still mean the most to me. It's about being authentic and making sure it feels feral and those are the bands, as a kid always felt the most real to me.
Spider, comic book and sci-fi geekiness has become a huge buzz over the past few years. What excites you the most about pop culture finally catching up to the things you’ve been infusing into Powerman 5000 all along?
It’s sort of a double edge sword quite honestly. It’s that weird thing where, I always think about this, when I was a kid, if you wore a 'Spider-Man' tee shirt to school you were most definitely getting your ass beat. It was not cool, it was not accepted and it was not popular in the sense it is today. It is pretty remarkable that all this stuff that meant so much to me as a kid -- it was like this weird geek club back in the day where there was you and maybe two other kids that understood what you were talking about when you went to the video store and rented some weird horror movie or sci-fi movie. But now, 'The Avengers' makes 20 billion dollars or whatever it does.
It’s become such a normal thing. It blows my mind when you drive down the street in Hollywood and there’s billboards for 'Captain America' movies, I’d never have imagined that as a kid. On the one hand I love it because it’s sort of got the respect it always deserved and the people that were into that kind of stuff can now thrive. Thrive in the content and thrive as professionals. But I have to admit, I do sort of miss when it was a bit more of a private weird secret that not everyone knew about.

Powerman 5000
Powerman 5000, often abbreviated as PM5K, is an American rock band formed in 1991. The band was founded in Boston, Massachusetts by frontman Michael David Cummings, better known by his stage name Spider One, the younger brother of Rob Zombie, a famous heavy metal musician and filmmaker.

Rivethead took to the stage first get the local crowed ready for what the night had to offer. This is a great band with one hell of a sound, I would highly suggest giving them a listen.
Up next was the boys from San Francisco, CA, Death Valley High . As it was a co headlining tour with PM5K and Orgy, DVH and Knee High Fox were joining in on the flip flopping of the set times. Death Valley High hit the stage with their brand Goth Metal and high energy that got the crowd ready for what the night had in store. Touring in support of their latest album CVLT [AS FVK] or simply pronounced Cult As Fuck the band sees no end in sight. During the interview , we did with the band earlier in the evening they let us know that they would be embarking on a European tour with Orgy this spring. After DVH left the stage Knee High Fox stepped in and kept the party going until it was time for Orgy to take the stage.
As the curtain drew back and the noes of Talk Sick hit the air all eyes were on the stage as for many it was the return of Orgy , or if you were like me it was your first time. Being that it was my first time all hopes of a gentile and warm embrace were quickly thrown out the window as Jay Gordon and the fellas came out swinging for the fences. It may be a new era of Orgy but the music still holds true as is being carried on by Jay and the rest of the band. The played many greats off of Candyass and Vapor Transmission. The power and energy that flowed through the venue from the stage was nothing short of pure electricity. I see now why PM5K would tour together, they can challenge each other on a nightly basis of who brings the energy to the stage more. As time came for Orgy to close their set the all too familiar true of Blue Monday came resonating out of the speakers. As they started to play Jay Gordon decided that he would like a little help on this on and not just from the fellas of DVH that joined him up on stage but from the audience as he took to the floor and let anyone who wanted to help sing along have a go at it. It was an amazing way for them to end that set and the crowd loved every minute of it.
Closing out the night on their night to headline was Powerman 5000 . Unlike Orgy I have seen Powerman 5000 an insane number of times throughout the years and there is one thing I have always asked myself, how in the hell does Spider One do it every single night. Seriously he has to have calf muscles the size of trees as much as he jumps around. Well I can tell you nothing has changed he is still bouncing around the stage like Tigger delivering the music we all love . Powerman 5000 delivered a mix of music that took us all on an incredible journey spanning the career of the band. Classics like Nobody’s Real and Supernova Goes Pop were weaved in with newer tunes like Invade, Destroy, Repeat and How to Be Human. Of course, when it was time for the night to end there is only one PM5K song that will do the trick and I do not think anyone was disappointed with it. When Worlds Collide is a song that has and will stand the test of time, and is nothing but the perfect song to put a bow on an evening that was one of the most energetic I have seen in a long time.

BANGKOK: The three boats that disappeared from a marine police station last week with some 330,000 litres of diesel were found in Malaysian waters on Sunday (June 16) and are being towed back.
Pol Maj-General Jaroonkiart Pankaew (pic), deputy commissioner of the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), said the three boats are expected to reach Songkhla pier on Monday.
Jaroonkiart was speaking to reporters just before boarding a police plane to Songkhla, where he will interrogate the crew of the three boats himself.
The three fishing boats were among five seized by the coast guard in the Gulf of Thailand on March 17 with 28 crew members. Most of the crew are of Thai nationality.
Three of the five boats were found to be loaded with some 330,000 litres of diesel smuggled from a neighbouring country to sell cheaply in Thailand. The other two boats were empty.
The five boats were towed to the Sattahip marine police’s pier in Chonburi. On the evening of June 11, officers guarding the boats allowed them to be moved away from the pier due to strong winds.
The officers believed the heavy winds and big waves would cause the boats to smash into the pier and get damaged.
However, no officers were dispatched to watch the boats and the three loaded with diesel disappeared late that night.
Channel 8 reported earlier that certain members of the coast guard had allegedly siphoned some diesel from the boats to sell and had let go of the boats to conceal their crimes.
On Monday, Pol Maj-General Preutthipong Nutchanart, commander of the marine police division under CIB, said it was found that some of the oil on the three boats was missing. He did not elaborate.
He also said eight of the 16 crew members on the three boats had also disappeared.
Preutthipong added that he believes some members of the Sattahip coast guard definitely had a hand in letting the boats go. He said Jaroonkiart has given him seven days to investigate the case and determine who was involved.
Meanwhile, Pol Colonel Chatchawal Chuchaicharoen, commander of Crime Suppression Sub-division 2, said he had learned from lawyers that only 11 of the 28 crew members arrested on March 17 were still available to face charges after being released on bail. The 11 suspects are scheduled to report for interrogation later on Monday. - The Nation/ANN

ABOARD THE USS LABOON IN THE RED SEA (AP) — Yemen’s Houthi rebels launched a boat-borne bomb attack against a commercial ship in the Red Sea on Wednesday, authorities said, the latest escalation despite a U.S.-led campaign trying to protect the vital waterway.
The use of a boat loaded with explosives raised the specter of 2000’s USS Cole attack, a suicide assault by al-Qaida on the warship when it was at port in Aden, killing 17 on board. Associated Press journalists saw the Cole in the Red Sea on Wednesday, now taking part in the U.S. campaign while visiting one of her sister ships, the USS Laboon.
Yemen’s military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree claimed responsibility for the attack, identifying the vessel targeted as the Liberian-flagged, Greek-owned bulk carrier Tutor. He described the attack as using a “drone boat,” as well as drones and ballistic missiles.
In a warning to shippers, the British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center described the vessel as being hit in its stern by a small white craft southwest of the Houthi-controlled port city of Hodeida.
The captain “reports the vessel is taking on water, and not under command of the crew,” the UKMTO said. He also “reports the vessel was hit for a second time by an unknown airborne projectile.”
The U.S. military’s Central Command also acknowledged the attack, saying the Tutor “most recently docked in Russia.”
“The impact of the (drone boat) caused severe flooding and damage to the engine room,” it added.
The U.S. military separately destroyed three anti-ship cruise missile launchers in Houthi-held Yemen, as well as one rebel drone over the Red Sea. The Houthis launched two anti-ship ballistic missiles over the Red Sea, but they caused no damage, Central Command said.
The Houthis, who seized Yemen’s capital nearly a decade ago and have been fighting a Saudi-led coalition since shortly after, have been targeting shipping throughout the Red Sea corridor over the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip.
They say the attacks are aimed at stopping the war and supporting the Palestinians, though the attacks often target vessels that have nothing to do with the conflict .
The war in Gaza has killed more than 36,000 Palestinians there, while hundreds of others have been killed in Israeli operations in the West Bank. It began after Hamas-led militants attacked Israel on Oct. 7, killing about 1,200 people and taking around 250 hostage.
The Houthis have launched more than 50 attacks on shipping, killed three sailors, seized one vessel and sunk another since November, according to the U.S. Maritime Administration. A U.S.-led airstrike campaign has targeted the Houthis since January, with a series of strikes May 30 killing at least 16 people and wounding 42 others, the rebels say.
Associated Press journalists on an embark with the U.S. Navy were interviewing Cmdr. Eric Blomberg, the commanding officer of the Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer Laboon, when the alert came in on the attack. Blomberg took multiple calls from sailors on board the vessel, giving updates on the apparent attack.
The Laboon is one of the destroyers accompanying the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower aircraft carrier and both has shot down Houthi fire and escorted vessels through the region. Though Blomberg and others stressed they were still investigating the attack, he said it appeared the vessel targeted had nothing to do with the Israel-Hamas war.
The Houthis “hit ships that are completely not associated or tied to the U.S. or Israel at all,” Blomberg said.
“These are just innocent merchant sailors carrying goods through the Red Sea, trying to get it through the least-expensive route, and they’re paying for it,” he said.

‘All eyes on Rafah’ is the Internet's most viral AI image. Two artists are claiming credit

Two Malaysians separated by 900 miles are both taking credit for a synthetic image of Gaza that became the most viral ever AI-generated photo, underscoring the complexities of authorship and ownership in an online landscape increasingly overrun with content created by artificial intelligence.
The story behind the “all eyes on Rafah” graphic, which has been shared about 50 million times on Instagram and other platforms, likely begins on the northern tip of the Southeast Asian island of Borneo.
There, back in February, Zila AbKa was at her home playing around with Microsoft’s AI tool Image Creator.
AbKa is a 39-year-old science teacher and an AI art hobbyist. She’s also a pro-Palestinian activist. She wanted to make a piece of political art that depicted those sheltering in camps in the Gazan city of Rafah.

After the phrase “all eyes on Rafah” started going viral, AbKa said she wrote a prompt for the AI tool to create an image that would have the phrase spelled out by white tents amid dense rows of other tent encampments. The words had become a rallying cry after a World Health Organization representative used them to draw attention to the situation in the region where hundreds of thousands of displaced people have fled.
When Microsoft’s Image Creator spit out a graphic, AbKa put two watermarks on it: One indicating it was generated by AI; another saying she was the creator.
She liked it. So she shared a post on Feb. 14 in her language — Malay — to the Facebook group Prompters Malaya , a gathering place of about 250,000 mostly Malaysians who share AI-generated art, sometimes about the war in Gaza.
“I wanted to spread and highlight the issue and hoped that everybody would do whatever they could to show solidarity with Gazans right now,” AbKa told NPR.
AbKa has not previously spoken out about making the image.
AbKa: 'I think this is mine,' but the watermarks are gone
From there, she basically forgot about it — until last week, when she saw a very similar image on Instagram, spreading rapidly following an Israeli strike in the city that killed dozens and prompted worldwide condemnation.
But the image was altered. Her watermarks were gone. And the image was expanded to include snow-capped mountains looming over the tents, an almost surrealist touch, an AI riff on Gaza’s Middle Eastern landscape.

At first, she was offended that someone had laundered her image and removed her name from it. In addition, she was initially alarmed that the “AI generated” disclaimer was missing just as tens of millions of people were re-sharing it across the internet.
She zoomed in to examine every letter and corner of the viral image. She concluded that it had to be hers.
“Everything about the structure of the words and the arrangement of the ‘tents,’ it’s all the same, except for the expanded part,” she said. “When I saw it, I thought, yeah, I think this is mine.”
But her annoyance over not getting credit soon dissipated.
“I don’t think any generated AI image is fully someone’s belonging,” AbKa said.
Indeed, the U.S. Copyright Office has repeatedly rejected copyright protection for AI-generated images since they lack human authorship, placing the AI images in a legal gray area.
It was, however, AbKa’s unique prompt that summoned the image. She said that should be worth something, though galvanizing support for Gaza was always her main impetus.
“If the aim is to spread awareness,” AbKa said about the version of the image that went viral, “then I think I should thank that person.”

That person is Amirul Shah, known as Shahv4012 on Instagram. He is also Malaysian.
The two do not know each other, nor have they ever communicated.
AbKa believes he took her image, edited it and created an Instagram “template,” which has since surged on social media, amassing nearly 50 million shares on Instagram and millions more on other social media platforms.
AbKa thinks Shah cropped her image right above her watermarks, then edited it with a tool that uses AI to expand and re-imagine the background of a photo. She believes this because she tried it herself on her own AI rendering and got results strikingly similar to the viral image.
Shah’s image has his own watermark on it with the tag of his Instagram account dedicated to his photography, @chaa.my_, giving the impression that the whole thing was his original undertaking.

When Shah was reached for an interview, he denied copying AbKa’s creation. Instead, he shared a different version of events.
Shah, a 21-year-old college student in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s capital, has not previously spoken out about his process.
A photography enthusiast, Shah says he was toying around with an AI image generator recently. He thinks he used Microsoft’s Image Creator, the same service AbKa used, but he claims he can’t remember.
When he added it to an Instagram "template," it ricocheted around the world, as influencers and celebrities like Dua Lipa and Bella Hadid amplified it to their millions of followers.
The image looks uncannily like AbKa’s, but he claims he hadn't even seen AbKa's before making his own.
Still, the size of the words, placement of each letter and AI-generated clusters of tents next to the phrase are identical. But Shah’s version is portrayed from an higher aerial view, with deeper and longer shadows cast by snowy mountains.
He said he was giving all sorts of Gaza-related AI images a try as a form of activism, not angling for virality.
“My intention was not for popularity,” Shah told NPR. “I wanted to uphold justice for all Palestinians who are there.”
Shah says AI images spread faster
Technologists say that generating the same exact AI image twice is exceedingly unlikely.
In dozens of attempts to recreate the image using Microsoft’s Image Creator, NPR was not able to prompt the tool to create a visual that came close to the viral one. Most of the time, the tool struggled to correctly spell “All eyes on Rafah,” a limitation of many AI image generators, which tend to depict words misspelled or warped in some way.

Shah, who regularly shares posts on social media highlighting the plight of Palestinians, said he has noticed that real photos and videos of the war tend to have limited reach on Instagram.
“The picture from AI can spread faster in a short time,” he said. Shah says another problem is that he has had graphic images of war removed by Instagram for violating the platform’s policies. He said he’s aware that repeat violations can mean that “users can get blocked,” he said.
Felix Simon, a research fellow at the University of Oxford who studies AI’s impact on public discourse, said the image being created by artificial intelligence fueled its virality far less than other factors.
“The simplicity of the slogan, the symbolism at work, the timing and political context, and the fact that it was shared by celebrities,” said Simon, adding that “the lack of graphic content makes it less likely to get taken down, which helps, too.”
It is a concern that has been echoed by other activists who have claimed graphic imagery that shows the atrocities of the war in Gaza can be removed from platforms, or suppressed by social media algorithms.
Some commentators criticized the meme for portraying a sanitized version of war that renders human horrors on the ground in Gaza into an easily-shareable AI image.
Both AbKa and Shah reject that idea, saying AI images can be a useful way to grab peoples' attention and make them engage in some way with the war.
Yet there is no agreement among them about who created the viral image that has spurred discussion around the world about the authenticity of online activism and renewed attention on an internet increasingly rife with realistic-looking AI depictions.
When pressed in direct messages on Instagram for a response to AbKa’s contention that her image was copied, Shah blocked an NPR reporter.
