About the show.

The Miami International Boat Show and the Miami Yacht Show have joined forces to create the Discover Boating Miami International Boat Show, the largest boat and yacht show in the world. Discover everything from kayaks to superyachts to the latest aquatic innovations. The on-land portion of the event will take place at the newly reimagined Miami Beach Convention Center and Pride Park.

The in-water components of the show will take place at Venetian Marina, Herald Plaza, Museum Park Marina, and Yacht Haven Grande Miami.

Historically, the Miami International Boat Show and Miami Yacht Show have attracted hundreds of thousands of attendees to South Florida and generated an estimated combined annual economic impact of $1.34 billion.

Aboard these simple, stalwart little vessels we'd venture across nebulous bodies of water in search of distant wild shorelines or uncharted islands. We'd land, hike into the interior, and make camp. But always our boats offered refuge from any threat, including summer storms, which we'd wait out beneath our boom tents. At night we'd read sea stories by oil lantern and sleep under a blanket of stars.

Curiously, never once did these visions include negative images of wrestling with a heavy mast and complex rigging, fussing with a smelly, recalcitrant outboard, or being held off shore by our boat's draft. And even when we pictured the afternoon breeze kicking up whitecaps, never once did the vision include a chilly capsize.

It was the dream of returning to those simple pleasures that inspired thoughts of SCAMP. That and a persistent desire to go over "there" - that place we often see but are unable to reach. It seems to happen on every cruise. Never mind that we're usually sailing the smallest boat around for miles, we always come upon some ultra-shallow lagoon or serpentine tidal stream that disappears into the reeds, trees and rushes. To get in there - to really commune with nature - a boat needs to be light, shallow and easily propelled - and preferably flat-bottomed in case we decide to stay right though the ebb.

SCAMP features an offset centerboard, massive flotation from sealed seats and stowage cabin, a water ballast tank holding 173 pounds of water, an after cabin "veranda" that functions like a hard dodger, and a flat bottom and skegs for beaching.

Introduction: Optimist Sailboat Build

Building the Wood/Epoxy Optimist In 1947 a gentleman named Clark Mills designed a small sail boat for kids to learn to build and sail called the Optimist.  This boat was designed to be built from 3 sheets of plywood, with basic woodworking abilities.  As time progressed, builders began to modify the boats to gain speed advantages - as happens with all vehicles. In 1995 the International Optimist Association took the boat back to its roots and a set of dimensions were compiled to retain an exact shape of the boat, so as to remove design advantages from one boat to another.  The Optimist is tightly controlled now with over 60 measurements and tolerances of the hull are generally +/- 5 mm.  The tolerances do not allow the builder to exploit the possible variations of shape of the hull, but do allow a competent builder to construct a legal racing hull.  Half Moon Bay Yacht Club has a summer youth sailing camp.  Through the years we have trained many a young boy or girl to rig and sail the small boats available to us.  Normally in an older Laser or Coronado 15.  In 2011, the sailing program decided that the Optimist had a place in our sailing fleet to allow the younger kids (7-15) to rig, launch, sail and retrieve the boats themselves while under adult supervision.  We set about looking at the building of wood/epoxy Optimist sailing boats.  We quickly focused on making racing legal hulls so as to be competitive with other surrounding sailing clubs.  This is where the accuracy and repeatability of the ShopBot CNC router at TechShop of  Menlo Park www.techshop.ws became an invaluable tool in our fleet building.  I made it at TechShop.  Due to the close tolerances allowed, and the desire to have an almost identical fleet of boats, the ShopBot  fit the bill to the letter.  Once I redrew the plans into CAD drawings and transferred to cut files the different parts of the boats were identical.  Each group of people that wanted to build a boat only had small amounts of fitting, beveling and gluing to accomplish, with very little use of dangerous equipment needed and quick progress to show for their efforts, so kids fit right into the task of building boats.

The jig produced on the ShopBot retains the correct shape and supports the boat, while it is being built, to retain the exact design measurements. The plans for the boat can be found from many sources for free on the internet.   Plans are available in many languages, as well.  One such source is http://www.optiworld.org/Woodguide05.pdf Another guide to building an optimist is http://www.burcotboats.co.uk/howToBuild.pdf , as well as half a dozen other well written articles on the internet. But none provide CAD quality drawings or files to work with modern computer controlled machine tooling. Well, here they are:  The jig as well as the major parts of the boat.     The jig sides , mast step, rudder, dagger board , dagger board case ends and doubler pieces are made from 18mm or 3/4" ACX or marine grade plywood; (1219.2mm x 2438.4mm) 48" x 96".

Now to get started, the jig we have designed is the exact dimensions of a finished hull shape. Both ends of the jig have interlocking pieces to allow for inserting and removing as needed during the building of the boat. The cross members are standard 2" x 4" cut to 44" long and with a 3/4" dado 8" to each side of center to fit into the grooves of the forms. These should be cut so as to be flush with the top of the form and screwed into place to prevent movement. The bottom boards provide a stable platform for the jig to sit on. The jig should be placed on a flat surface for the build, as distortion to the jig will transfer to the boat being built. Save the scraps for blocking.

The file for the hull bottom, midship frame, dagger board case sides and corner braces are cut from one 4' x 8' sheet (1219.2mm x 2438.4mm) of 12mm Marine grade plywood  If you save your larger scraps for doubling plates and gunwale rails, you will have very little waste.  The first cuts should be for the 6mm deep dado at both ends of the hull to join the bow and transoms to.   The second cut should be for the dagger board trunk cut out.  The third cut should be the outline of all the pieces.  In order to fit both sides of the dagger board trunk on one sheet, one side will have a joint to be epoxied together to match the other side.

The next setup  should be for 6mm plywood.  Again a 4' x 8' sheet will make both ends, both sides, mast thwart frame and again scraps can be used for doublers and clamping pads. You now have a boat cut and ready for a little fitting.  Bevel the edges of the bottom to the approximate angles of 15 degrees with a block plane and you are ready to start your build.  I would recommend a dry fit of all parts prior to mixing epoxy.  This doesn't take long and may save you a lot of trouble with messy epoxy. 

Center the bottom in the jig, stand on it to bow it and hold it down, and temporarily screw it to the 2" x 4" 's 130mm each side of center line to allow for gluing of the doublers without covering the screws, so they can be removed later.  The holes will be filled in when the boat is removed from the jig with epoxy.  Rip a 4' x 8' sheet of 4mm plywood into 1- 240mm strip and 2-80mm strips with a 45 degree beveled edge.  This can be done on the ShopBot or a table saw.  These are the doublers for the bottom to meet design minimum thickness while saving weight.  Once these are epoxied into place and trimmed you are ready to install the sides, mid ship frame, bow and transom.  The mid ship bulkhead can be used to position the strips in the correct place on the bottom of the hull.  Once these are epoxied in position, placing some weights on top, until cured, works well.  You will be covering the dagger board slot, but that can be easily cut out once the hull is removed from the jig and turned upside down for fitting the dagger board trunk and filling of screw holes.

The plans show two temporary braces.  These can be made from any scrap plywood and are used to hold the proper shape of the sides while doing the assembly and glue up.  Once the gunwale rails are installed these will be removed and discarded.  The bow and transom fit into the dado at the front and rear of the hull bottom panel.  The sides wrap around the outsides.  A couple small blocks of wood screwed onto the jig at the bow and stern help in keeping the sides in position while clamps are applied.   A small slot cut into the two forward jig pieces to allow a small bar clamp of your choice works well to hold the two sides together tightly.  Once you are comfortable with the fit of all the parts your ready to mix epoxy.  Wet out each side with unthickened  epoxy.  Then add a small layer of thickened epoxy and assemble with the temporary braces and mid ship brace installed.  Next is the mast deck and thwart.   Fit and epoxy in place.  Some of the scraps of 18mm can be used for the doubler in these areas.  You can install the bow and transom doubler before or after this step.

Gunwale rails and rub rails are next.  You can use layers of plywood or fancy colorful woods if you plan to use a clear finish to show off your work.   Build up the layers until you get to the final thickness required, per the plans.   Rip 1 for each side of boat starting with a 45mm wide piece stepping down 5mm for each 10mm of thickness.  Cut out pockets for and install the corner blocks next.   Form and shape the rails to the required shape and thickness and you are ready to remove the boat from the Jig.  We used a hand planer for the rough shape and finished with a belt sander.  It will now hold its shape and dimensions.  The jig can be used as a cradle to support the boat as you work on it either upside down or right side up.

Once the boat is removed from the jig, it can be turned over and all joints filled with thickened epoxy.  Install the dagger board trunk through the hull and epoxy in place.  We choose to put our club logo and hull # on the sides of the dagger board trunk.  Once again the ShopBot makes this a blank canvas for your artistry.  Below one of the boys is rounding the edges before the dagger board trunk is installed.  Shape the bottom of the dagger board trunk  to conform to the hull bottom from the outside once it is cured in place.  Install the doubler pieces on the inside to help support the dagger board trunk.  We installed a few wood dowels into the midship frame to add strength as well.   Sand, epoxy and finish the exterior of the hull as desired, with either paint or a clear finish.  On the inside of the hull fillet the joints with thickened epoxy.  Install the flotation attachment pads, and main sheet block pad.  Sand, epoxy and finish the interior of the boat as desired and the hull portion of your sail boat is ready for hardware installation.  We chose white enamel for the insides for a cleaner look.  You will also find the plans from one of the internet sites below.  Download these and print copies to have available as you work. 

To build a race legal hull requires a measurement by a certified Optimist qualified measure person.  Plan on 4 hours or more for this process.  The PDF file is the list of measurements for the hull.  The tolerances are close, but with the use of the CNC controlled cutting you should have a race legal hull that your kids can be fully involved in the building of.  The dagger board piece and rudder that was cut will need to be shaped and profiled.  Again we used a plane for the rough shape, followed by the belt sander.  Hardware kits are available online as well as sails, spars, FRP rudders and dagger boards at very reasonable prices.  One such site is : http://www.mauriprosailing.com/Optiparts-Optimist/Optiparts-Optimist.htm?gclid=CKHtt7O1t64CFQ9-hwodHBRhrA

The annual Chicago Boat Show will be moving next year out of its longtime home at McCormick Place, organizers announced Thursday.

After 92 years, Chicago’s largest boat show will debut at Rosemont’s Donald E. Stephens Convention Center on Jan. 8-12, 2025.

The decision came after multiple conversations with exhibitors, said Darren Envall, vice president at National Marine Manufacturers Association, organizer of the event. Market analysis and boater feedback were also factors for the shift to Rosemont, which is closer to suburban boaters.

“The more centralized Rosemont ... location positions the show for growth, accommodating the expanding boating population across a broader Chicagoland region,” Envall said in a news release.

Next year’s show is expected to feature more fishing boats, which cater to suburban and recreational boaters, a large customer base. The average boater’s income is $100,000 or less, Envall told the Sun-Times, so the convention will display more entry-level boats. However, the event will still showcase million-dollar yachts, he added.

Outdoor industries, including boating, became more popular during the pandemic when people could enjoy being outside while remaining socially distant from others, Envall said.

In 2022, the number of outdoor recreation participants grew 2.3% to a record high of more than 168 million people, or 55% of the U.S. population ages 6 and older, according to a 2023 report from the Outdoor Industry Association.

January’s Chicago Boat Show was expected to attract about 40,000 visitors from Illinois, Michigan, Indiana and southern Wisconsin. Exhibitors displayed some 400 fishing boats, deck boats, ski boats, wake boats, pontoons and yachts ranging in price from less than $10,000 to more than $1 million. But only 18,169 visitors turned out, said Envall, citing bad weather.

He expects next year's show to have 40,000 attendees, along with exhibitors from multiple states in the region.

In the last decade, the show has evolved from boats, recreational vehicles and sailing vessels to strictly a boat exhibition, which Envall said was also a deciding factor for moving to Rosemont.

Other outdoor industry events staging shows at the DES Convention Center include the Chicago RV & Camping Show, the Chicago Golf Show and the Travel & Adventure Show.

The DES Convention Center has 840,000 square feet of exhibition space, compared to 2.6 million square feet of exhibit halls at McCormick Place.

For superyacht shoppers, the Palm Beach International Boat Show, kicking off its four-day run this week, is set to break records with more than 60 yachts over 100 feet long on display. Last year was also a banner year for superyachts at the show. 

Headliners will include the likes of the 295-foot Corsair Nero ,  the 278-foot Victorious by AKYacht, the 230-foot Turquoise-built Talisman C , and 213-foot Benetti Triumph among brokerage yachts, and in new yachts, the 113-foot Ocean Alexander Puro 35 is making its world debut.  

There are so many gleaming white vessels over 100 feet, in fact, that the fleet will be split between the Palm Harbor Marina at the main show site on the downtown West Palm Beach waterfront and the Safe Harbor Rybovich Marina two miles north. 

Now in its 42nd year, PBIBS will also showcase hundreds of models of dayboats, cruisers, and fishing boats, as well as marine accessories. Running from this Thursday through Sunday, the show coincides with the Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary art show, a fortuitous opportunity for yacht owners wanting to add new art to their collections.

Here are 10 must-see boats at this year’s show.

Corsair Yachts ‘Nero’

The undisputed star of this year’s Palm Beach show? That would be the 295-foot, classically styled superyacht Nero , built in 2007 and inspired by American financier J.P. Morgan’s legendary 1930s steamer Corsair IV . Nero ‘s attendance at PBIBS marks its return to the charter market after an extensive refit in 2021. Now better than new, the boat is being managed by Burgess. With weekly charter rates from $497,000, the vessel offers five-star accommodations for 12 guests in six cabins, with pampering from a crew of 20. Part of the refit included a full interior refresh by Italian interior designer Laura Pomponi, plus a major focus on wellness. That meant the construction of a new, state-of-the-art gym and spa, the assistance of a certified onboard trainer, a masseuse and beautician. After PBIBS, Nero will spend the winter in the Caribbean before returning to the Med for the summer season.

Ocean Alexander Puro 35P

Ocean Alexander is debuting the first of its new Puro superyacht series at PBIBS. The 113-foot Puro 35P comes from the drawing board of Italian designer Giorgio M. Cassetta and is a step back from the polarizing lines of OA’s recent Revolution and Explorer series with their bold, vertical bow designs. Aimed at long-distance cruising, the 35P can carry over 5,000 gallons of fuel and is powered by twin 2,000 hp MAN V12s for a 24-knot top speed. Twin 55kW Kohler generators can also keep the yacht powered at anchor for long periods. Other standout features include extensive glazing in the chiseled fiberglass hull, a forward deck plunge pool, and spacious accommodations for 10 guests. 

Think of it as the “starter” Sirena. Aimed at a younger demographic, the Turkish builder’s brand-new Sirena 48 is making its U.S. debut at PBIBS after a global reveal at last fall’s Cannes boat show. Such is its appeal that 27 hulls have already been sold, with 13 of the orders coming from North America. Looking like a scaled-down version of Sirena’s popular 58, its distinctive, trawler-style lines are from Argentinian designer Germán Frers. With more interior space than a typical 48-footer, the yacht offers three staterooms—plus a crew cabin—a spacious, light-filled salon, a large cockpit, an oversized flybridge, and a vast forward social area. Take your pick from twin 550 hp Cummins QSB, or 670 hp Volvo D11 turbo diesels. Or the builder is also offering hybrid power with twin 285 hp electric motors charged up by variable-speed generators that are good for a 30-mile battery-only range.

Feadship ‘Olympus’

Picture purchasing a classic 180-foot Feadship superyacht, and then getting a $10 million bill for a major refit. That was the case with Olympus , built by the Dutch masters at Feadship in 1996 to a design by Britain’s Andrew Winch and the celebrated naval architect Frits De Voogt. Sold in 2022, the new owner sent it to the Monaco Marine refit center in La Ciotat, France for a major makeover. It included overhauling the 2,600 hp Caterpillar engines and generators, repairs to the structure, substantial upgrades to the guest areas and crew quarters, and new paint throughout. With the work completed just last year, the vessel is said to be in mint condition. Offered jointly by brokers Fraser and Edmiston, Olympus has an asking price of $28.5 million. With accommodations for 16 guests in eight cabins, the boat’s highlights include two primary suites, tropical-spec air conditioning, and Palm Beach-chic decor.

Benetti ‘Triumph’

Italian yachting powerhouse Benetti is showing off its superyacht-building skills with the 213-foot Triumph . Delivered in 2021, this Giorgio M. Cassetta-designed steel-and-aluminum world girder features six decks, a 1,400-square-foot primary suite with outdoor terrace and adjoining lounge, a 750-square-foot beach club, and a touch-and-go helipad. What sets Triumph apart, however, is its lavish interior furnishings put together by the owner along with Benetti Interior Style and Monaco-based Green & Mingarelli Design. It includes pieces by French glassmaker Lalique, marble from Marfil, Statuario and Armani, furs, silk and wool carpets, plus a collection of cool black-and-white wildlife photographs by British fine art photographer David Yarrow. The pièce de résistance? That would be the owner’s Triumph Bonneville motorcycle displayed in the salon.

Fjord 39 XP/XL

Germany’s Fjord Yachts, part of the Hanse Group, has a new 39-foot day boat that it’s unveiling at the Palm Beach show. The 39 XP and XL keep all the bold design cues of the bigger Fjord 41 XP and XL, like a big, open cockpit, walkaround center console, vertical bow, mile-high windshield and stretched hardtop. As for the differences between the XP and XL, it’s all about power. The XL comes with a choice of twin 320hp Volvo D4 diesels, or bigger 440 hp D6 versions, both with Volvo stern drives. Likely more appealing to U.S. buyers will be the XP powered by twin 400 hp Mercury Verado V10 outboards giving a 50-knot top speed. Pricing starts at around $500,000.

Turquoise ‘Talisman C’

Chandeliers don’t come more dramatic than this. Cascading down the central spiral staircase of the Turkish-built, 231-foot superyacht Talisman C , this jaw-dropping piece of art comprises an array of multi-colored glass balls threaded on stainless-steel rods and illuminated by hanging fiber-optic strands. It’s the creation of Prague-based Crystal Caviar and is one of a number of glass installations on this sleek, low-profile superyacht. Built in 2011 by the Proteksan Turquoise shipyard, Talisman C was designed inside and out by London-based studio H2 Yacht Design, with naval architecture by Italy’s Hydro Tec. With cabins for 12 guests, one of its highlights is a huge primary suite, which boasts more crystal chandeliers and a private library. Twin 2,447 hp Caterpillar diesels give a top speed of 18 knots and a transatlantic range of 7,000 nautical miles at 12 knots. It’s listed with Burgess for $59.9 million. 

Sanlorenzo 44 ‘Kamakasa’

Delivered in 2020 and sold to a new buyer just last August, the 146-foot Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy Kamakasa will be for sale at PBIBS. The asking price, through the Italian Yacht Group, is $23.75 million. Lack of use might also be the issue here; the yacht’s twin 2,600 hp MTU V16 diesels have a mere 289 hours on the clock. Built in aluminum to a design by Rome-based Zuccon International Project, Kamakasa was the second hull in the Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy series. One of the top features is a primary suite that spans three levels and almost 1,600 square feet; it also comes with a private Jacuzzi, separate bathrooms, a walk-in closet, and a private study. The yacht’s lightweight construction and MTU power combine to deliver an impressive 20-knot top speed.

Bahama 41 GT2

As ultimate, reel-’em-in, fishing center consoles go, the Bahama 41 from West Palm Beach-based Bahama Boat Works is as hard-core as they come. But when owners kept asking for a little more comfort for the family, the builder responded. The result is the brand-new flagship 41 GT debuting at PBIBS. While the proven, wave-slicing hull stays the same, the cockpit layout is new. In place of the single bench seat, there are now three-across bucket seats with a second row behind. The wider console now has space for a pair of 22-inch Garmin screens, while the new extended hardtop features sun shades and even a rain shower. Outboard choices stay the same with either twin Mercury V12 600s, or four 400 hp Mercury V10s, good for a 65-knot-plus top speed. Pricing is from around $920,000.

Heesen ‘Book Ends’

Launched in 2022, this 164-foot Heesen is part of the Book Ends collection, owned by an American couple who have had more than 18 yachts with the same name. The exterior design of this Heesen was by Omega Architects, while Dutch studio Van Oossanen did the naval architecture. The yacht is part of Heesen’s fast cruising series, which is more efficient than other vessels its size, and can reach 23 knots at full speed with its MTU 16V 4000 M65L engines. The yacht is listed through Ocean Independence for 42 million Euro, or about $45.7 million.

For those following the situation in the Middle East, one of the big questions is when - or if - Israel will launch its assault on Rafah.

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said during the weekend that the assault was still necessary to "eliminate the remaining terrorist battalions in Rafah".

But for those who are trying to arrange aid deliveries - and those who are desperately waiting for them - the lack of certainty is already risking lives.

United Nations humanitarian coordinator Jamie McGoldrick said aid operations in Gaza cannot be planned more than two or three days ahead at the moment because of the instability and uncertainty.

"It would be a really difficult scenario for us to envisage the possibility of hundreds of thousands of people being forced from Rafah because of the incursion.

"We are not in a position to contingency plan that. We're not in a position to pre-position shelter, material, food, medical supplies and especially water... It will be a real problem for us." 

Why does this matter?

It is already extremely difficult to get aid into Gaza due to the security situation and Israeli restrictions.

In desperation, a small group of countries has resorted to dropping aid from the air and deliveries have finally been arriving by sea - but neither of these makes up for the capacity that should be brought in by road.

And, as has been confirmed today, the need is immense - the UN says famine is "imminent" in northern Gaza and people in the rest of the enclave are struggling to access food.

Mr McGoldrick said: "If there was to be an incursion, that (aid) system we have, which is already precarious and intermittent, would then be broken."

Middle East correspondent Alistair Bunkall  is in Jerusalem and says the US and Israeli leaders would have had a lot to discuss during their 45-minute call.

"We have seen over recent weeks, in the absence of communication between the two leaders, quite a public spat between Israel and Washington, the US president making it very clear that he is not happy with the way that this war is being fought and the lack of humanitarian aid that is getting into Gaza.

"For his part, the Israeli prime minister has been defiant and adamant that Israel will pursue its war aims, specifically, the release of all the hostages and the elimination of Hamas in the Gaza Strip. If that means going into the southern city of Rafah, then that is what the Israelis plan to do."

Over the weekend we learnt that Israel is still planning to push ahead with an assault on Rafah, in Gaza's south.

The US, Israel's staunchest ally, has said it will not support such an operation without the Israelis presenting a credible plan to ensure the safety of civilians.

Bunkall said an assault on Rafah does not seem to be imminent but that the world is "increasingly concerned that Israel is gearing up for it", with all of the humanitarian consequences that could have.

Meanwhile, ceasefire talks have resumed in Qatar, with a senior Israeli delegation flying there today.

"The expectation is that they might take a long time, maybe a couple of weeks if they're going to be successful.

"But Hamas has lowered its demands, Israel is still saying that are being unrealistic in what they are expecting. But there is certainly, it seems, room for negotiation. And as long as that stays the case, then there will remain hope that a new ceasefire deal can be agreed at some point."

Earlier we told you that US President Joe Biden and Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu were speaking - for the first time in 32 days.

The White House Press Office will send a full summary of the call a bit later but they have released this short statement: "President Biden spoke with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel to discuss the latest developments in Israel and Gaza, including the situation in Rafah and efforts to surge humanitarian assistance to Gaza."

Separately, Mr Netanyahu said the two men had discussed Israel's commitment to achieve the targets it had set out for the war: eliminating Hamas, releasing all the hostages and ensuring Gaza would no longer pose a threat to Israel.

This would be done "while providing the necessary humanitarian aid that helps achieve those goals", he said.

Earlier today, dozens of ultra-Orthodox Jews blocked the tracks of the Jerusalem light rail.

They were protesting moves to end the exemption from military service their community has enjoyed for decades.

According to The Times Of Israel, the demonstrators belong to the Jerusalem Faction, an extremist Haredi group of around 60,000 members. It is considered among the most conservative of Haredi factions.

Haredi men of military age have been able to avoid the draft by enrolling for study in yeshivas and getting repeated one-year deferrals until they reach the age of military exemption.

The law that allows this expired in June last year. A temporary extension is due to expire at the end of this month. After that, the military will have to enlist the Haredi men.

The news outlet cited the IDF's Personnel Directorate as saying that 66,000 young men from the Haredi community were given an exemption from military service over the past year.

This is reportedly a record - at a time when the army is facing a significant personnel shortage.

Our Middle East correspondent Alistair Bunkall says the Israeli forces have been "more front-footed" this time - their second raid on al Shifa hospital.

He said: "Again, there is huge international concern for the welfare of patients and medical staff trapped inside, estimated to be many thousands.

"Under international law, an army can fight in and around hospital if there is proof that it is being used for military purposes. 

"Conscious of a backlash, the IDF has been more front-footed this time, explaining from the outset the reasons for the operation and steps they've taken to reduce impact on civilians inside, including sending Arabic-speaking soldiers to liaise with staff and giving the soldiers special training before the operation was launched."

But Bunkall said the fact the IDF has once again found itself fighting inside the hospital "shows how they are struggling to hold some of the ground they've previously cleared".

He added: "Without a political plan for northern Gaza, Hamas is managing to regroup and carry on fighting, albeit in pockets. 

"Until the IDF can gain full control of northern and central Gaza with the force they currently have, then an assault on Rafah seems increasingly unlikely in the immediate term, without sizeable reinforcements."

The Israeli defence and security forces say they have killed 20 terrorists in the raid on al Shifa hospital in Gaza and "dozens of suspects" are being questioned.

"The IDF and ISA are continuing to thwart terrorist activity in al Shifa hospital," a statement says.

"Terror funds intended for distribution to Hamas terrorist operatives, in addition to numerous weapons" were found in the hospital, they said, describing this as "further evidence of Hamas' systematic abuse of hospitals and civilian infrastructure for its terrorist activities".

On the night of 17-18 March, Israeli forces say they raided Gaza’s al Shifa Hospital. 

As they have in the past, Israeli authorities released a video consisting of aerial footage captured during the fighting.

 Sky News has geolocated the clips that make up this video. The first, labelled "Fire toward IDF troops from the Shifa Hospital", does not show troops being fired upon from the hospital as claimed. Instead, it shows activity among a set of buildings south of the al Shifa hospital complex.

The second clip, accompanied by the same caption, was also filmed outside of the hospital, in a nearby street to its west. It shows an armoured vehicle moving down a main street.

The third piece of aerial footage was filmed at the hospital's main gate. It appears to show an exchange of gunfire. The final clip geolocated by Sky News was filmed further into the hospital complex, it shows individuals shooting firearms at ground level and from an upper window.

A separate clip, filmed in the daytime, was published by Al Jazeera. It shows an Israeli armoured bulldozer manoeuvring in hospital complex.

Content posted by a nearby Instagram user helps establish a timeline of events. Filmed from building in the vicinity of al Shifa Hospital, the first story was posted at 2.44am local time. Captioned: "The army says the entire place is surrounded", it shows an explosion amid heavy gunfire and the sounds of aircraft.  

A later story posted at 2.59am appears to show a fire in the vicinity of the hospital. Gunfire and aircraft can be heard in footage posted by this user into the day, with the latest being shared at 12.21pm local time.  

Joe Biden is speaking today to Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, our US correspondent Mark Stone reports.

The phone call, confirmed to Sky News by diplomatic sources familiar with the planning, is the first between the two leaders since 15 February.

Since that last phone call, the relationship between the two has grown increasingly strained.

Mr Biden has publicly articulated growing concern for the mounting death toll in Gaza and over the weekend, he appeared to support comments made late last week by Chuck Schumer, the Senate majority leader.

Mr Schumer had called for new elections in Israel, saying Netanyahu had "lost his way" . 

Asked about the speech, Mr Biden said: "He made a good speech, and I think he expressed a serious concern shared not only by him but by many Americans."

The White House and Mr Netanyahu's office will release a "read out" or summary of the phone call after it takes place. 

The summary of their last phone call made clear that Mr Biden had said to Mr Netanyahu that no military operation in Rafah should take place "without a credible and executable plan for ensuring the safety of and support for the more than one million people sheltering" there.

Since that call, Mr Netanyahu has confirmed that a military operation will take place , but that civilians will be moved before it commences. 

It's not clear if any military plans have been seen or approved by the Americans. Mr Netanyahu said the operation would not begin for several weeks.

This call will be the 20th between the two since the 7 October Hamas attack. It also marks the longest gap between calls - 32 days ago.

Defence and security analyst Michael Clarke is with us this afternoon and has been talking about the significance of developments today.

He was asked about growing suggestions from the UK and the US that Israel may be in breach of international humanitarian law for failing to ensure people in Gaza receive enough aid, he said.

"If you have an absolute requirement to look after the civilians in an occupied territory, if a third of those civilians are facing starvation, clearly you've failed to look after their basic needs," he says.

"The international pressure is now coming upon Israel and.

"The fear is not, in my view, that Israel is committing genocide - I've never been convinced by that idea - but the danger is that there's prima facie evidence building up of regular war crimes on a systemic basis.

"Collective punishment, for one, which is a war crime by any standards, as in the Geneva Convention, due to the denial of food, making everybody suffer for the fact that Hamas operated within their territory.

"And that's illegal under the third and fourth Geneva Conventions. Additional protocols one and two rule. I think it's 103 of international humanitarian law, no question.

"So if that is the case, I think outside powers, particularly the United States and some of the west Europeans, are worried that they will look complicit in what then may be may come to be an international legal case.

"Now, for the Americans, that means arms supplies. Britain, we don't give arms to the IDF much, but we supply components which go into some of the weapons.

"So there are elements of complicity here. And the Americans, although they can't stop weapons supplies because it's an American law, they have to provide them $3.2 billion worth every year, they can slow down.

"And there is evidence that they're beginning to slow down deliveries of the 155 millimetre artillery shells and tank rounds, ammunition.

"And I think that's to build pressure on the IDF to say we are serious about this. You know, we will keep you short of supplies if you don't look after the civilians, much better."

Ukraine's GDP up by 3.6% in January-February, economy minister says

Investment demand and agricultural exports are two of “several factors” which have driven an increase in Ukraine’s GDP seen during the first two months of this year.

According to Reuters, economy minister Yulia Svyrydenko said on Sunday that Ukraine’s GDP rose 3.6% during this period.

“This was driven by several factors, including investment demand, favourable weather conditions for construction works, agricultural exports, (and) the operation of the Ukrainian sea corridor,” Svyrydenko said on Facebook, citing preliminary data.

She said the expansion of production capacity in the mining industry and stability in the energy sector were additional factors.

“Thanks to the positive performance of key sectors of the economy, we expect sustainable growth for the entire first quarter,” she added.

Ukraine’s GDP rose 3.5% in January, having grown by 5% in 2023 after a 28.8% fall in the previous year.

The turnout at Russia’s presidential election is approaching 70% with hours remaining until the polls close.

At 67.54% as of Sunday morning, the number of eligible voters casting their ballots has surpassed 2018 levels according to the TASS news agency.

Turnout in 2018 was 67.5%; the highest ever turnout in a modern Russian presidential election was in June 1991, when turnout reached 74.7%.

The ongoing election, which has been hit by Ukrainian bombardments and a series of incursions into Russian territory by anti-Putin sabotage groups, will end in a landslide victory for Vladimir Putin who is running virtually unopposed.

Grant Shapps abandons Odesa trip after Kremlin became aware of travel plans

British defence secretary Grant Shapps was forced to abandon a trip to Ukraine’s southern city of Odesa because of a Russian missile threat.

As he flew to Poland from RAF Northolt last week, Shapps was notified that an armoured convoy carrying both the Ukrainian president and Greek prime minister narrowly avoided a Russian missile strike while visiting the port city on 6 March.

Shapps arrived in Kyiv the following day for talks with president Volodymyr Zelenskiy on 7 March, after which the planned onward journey to Odesa was called off.

Georgia breakaway state has discussed becoming part of Russia, according to report.

The self-titled independent state of South Ossetia has discussed becoming part of Russia, the Russian news agency RIA has claimed.

South Ossetia broke away from Georgian rule in a war in 1991-92. In 2008, Russia recognised as independent both this state and the separate breakaway region of Abkhazia.

This came after Russian troops repelled a Georgian attempt to retake South Ossetia in a five-day war in 2008.

According to a report by Reuters, RIA cited the head of South Ossetia’s parliament as confirming on Sunday that discussions over becoming part of Russia have taken place.

The two regions make up a fifth of Georgia’s territory.

“We are discussing all these issues in close coordination with Russia, taking into account our bilateral relations and treaties,” Alan Alborov, the chairman of South Ossetia’s parliament, has been quoted as saying by RIA.

“When we come to this idea together with the Russian Federation (about joining the Russian Federation), we will do it.”

Russian proposals for peace have been a ‘diktat’, the president of the Czech Republic has claimed.

It is impossible to imagine Russia and Ukraine negotiating a peace agreement because Russia’s proposals are all centred around continued Ukrainian subjugation, according to Czech president Petr Pavel.

The Kyiv Independent has reported comments made by Pavel to Czech Radio on Saturday, in which he claimed that “all Russian proposals so far have been in fact a diktat”.

“The Kremlin has presented its list of conditions that it as an aggressor has no right to put forward.”

Ukraine has maintained throughout that the peace talks should be held on the basis of its 10-step peace formula, which includes a full withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine. Russia has rejected this proposal.

Russia responds to Macron’s ceasefire request with weapons demand

Russia’s response to Emmanuel Macron’s request for a ceasefire in Ukraine during the Olympic games has been to ask France to stop supplying weapons to the country.

The French president made the request in an interview from Paris on Saturday, with Reuters reporting that Macron said a ceasefire is “what has always happened”.

Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova responded to this request by urging the French president to cease weapon supplies, the TASS news agency reported.

Zakharova also said Macron should have proposed the same ceasefire to the sides of the conflict in the Middle East.

Putin critics call for protests at polling stations

Critics of Vladimir Putin and his Kremlin regime have called for massive protests at Russian polling stations on Sunday, the final day of a presidential election that is guaranteed to cement his hardline rule.

The three-day vote has already been hit by Ukrainian bombardments and a series of incursions into Russian territory by anti-Putin sabotage groups.

Russia accused Ukraine of using “terrorist activities” to try to disrupt its presidential election and former president Dmitry Medvedev decried as “traitors” the scattered protesters who started fires at voting booths and poured dye into ballot boxes. A Ukrainian drone dropped an explosive close to a polling station in the annexed Zaporizhzhia region of Ukraine, Russian state news agency Tass said. No injuries or damage were reported and Reuters could not independently verify the incident.

The Slavyansk oil refinery in Russia’s Krasnodar region caught on fire on Sunday after a Ukrainian drone attack and one person died from a suspected heart attack, local officials said. Videos online showed explosions and fire, along with the sound of drones approaching the site.

On Sunday morning, the Russian defence ministry reported 35 Ukrainian drone incursions , including four in the Moscow region and two in the neighbouring Kaluga and Yaroslavl regions. More Ukrainian drones attacked in the Belgorod, Kursk and Rostov regions bordering Ukraine, and in the southern Krasnodar region, the defence ministry said.

Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, praised the Ukrainian military for its new “long-range capability”, in a statement posted on Saturday night. “What our own drones are capable of is a true Ukrainian long-range capability. Ukraine will now always have a strike force in the sky,” he said on social media.

Zelenskiy’s comments followed Ukrainian drones striking two Rosneft oil refineries in Russia’s Samara region, leaving one facility on fire on Saturday , the region’s governor said. The Volga river region’s Syzran refinery was on fire, Dmitry Azarov said on Telegram. Officials also confirmed an attack on the Novokubyshev refinery. Numerous other attacks during the past week have caused major damage to Russian oil refineries.

Attacks continued on Russia’s Belgorod oblast, with the Russian ministry of defence claiming air defence shot down 15 rockets. A man and a woman were killed in Belgorod oblast on Saturday, and another person was killed by Ukrainian shelling in the Russian city of Grayvoron, regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said on the Telegram messaging app. The fresh bombardments on Saturday prompted authorities to close schools and shopping centres.

Five people were wounded when a Ukrainian drone hit a car in the village of Glotovo, two kilometres (1.25 miles) from the Ukrainian border, Gladkov said. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told state media Vladimir Putin was being “constantly briefed” by his military leaders on the situation at the border. Putin is all but certain of victory in the election after dissent has been crushed.

Russia’s defence ministry said on Saturday that Ukrainian “reconnaissance groups” had attempted an incursion from Ukraine’s Sumy region . That followed an armed incursion claimed by Ukraine-based Russian opponents of the Kremlin on Tuesday in the Belgorod and Kursk regions. Russia’s defence ministry claimed its security forces killed 30 fighters. In contrast, the Russian Volunteer Corps – one of the groups that claimed to have crossed the border on Tuesday – released a video saying it had captured 25 Russian soldiers.

Resistance forces set off an explosion near a polling station in Russian-occupied Skadovsk in the Kherson oblast, injuring five Russian soldiers , the national resistance centre of Ukraine said . The explosion forced Russian administration in Skadovsk to cancel voting at polling stations and allow it only at places of residence, the centre said.

There had been 11 attempts to set fire to polling stations in Russia, along with 19 cases of ballot boxes being spoiled with greenery and paint, Nexta reported. Russian authorities have proposed eight-year prison sentences for those involved.

The death toll in the Russian attack on civilian infrastructure in Odesa rose to 21 after an injured emergency worker died in hospital. The ballistic missile attack blasted homes in the southern city on Friday, followed by a second missile that targeted first responders, officials said. It was Moscow’s deadliest attack in weeks and caused the British defence secretary, Grant Shapps, to abandon a trip because of a Russian missile threat. More than 50 people were still in hospital, Odesa deputy mayor Svitlana Bedreha said on Saturday, according to Ukrainian state media.

Russian shelling killed a 51-year-old man in the Donetsk oblast and injured another , regional governor Vadym Filashkin said. Russians shelled the Donetsk oblast about 11,000 times this week, Filashkin said.

There has been a record growth in the number of Russian men ages 31 to 59 with disabilities , the UK defence ministry said in its daily intelligence briefing. “The increase in the number of men with disabilities was most likely due to the growth in military invalids,” the UK defence ministry said. “This is almost certainly the case. A significant majority of the over 355,000 casualties that the Russian armed forces have suffered as a result of the conflict in Ukraine have been wounded personnel.”
