Critic Reviews for Ghost Town

Audience reviews for ghost town.

I actually enjoyed this quite a lot. Sure there's nothing original in the concept of a man who can see ghosts but Gervais is funny in the role and there is even a bit of real emotion attached to the whole thing. Not bad for Gervais' first lead role in Hollywood.

ghost town with ricky gervais

Great direction and lead performances make an otherwise generic romantic comedy with an absurd premise an enjoyable ride. In the wrong hands this would've been a forgettable disaster. Something about the protagonist's characterization as a damaged antisocial really resonates with the direction and Gervais's style. Definitely less accessible than your everyday "All-American" romedy but that's what makes the subtle humor so much better to appreciate. It's smart and honest.

Ricky Gervais at his best, as usual.

Better than I thought but fell abit flat at the end, Not enough comedy for me to enjoy.

ghost town with ricky gervais

Now streaming on:

Why do I think Ricky Gervais is so funny in "Ghost Town"? Because he doesn't want to appear funny. He wants to appear aggravated. He plays a character named Bertram Pincus, who does not suffer fools gladly. When you consider everyone to be a fool, that can be a heavy cross to bear. Gervais, a British actor whose work on television is legion, has at last found a leading role in a feature, and it's a good one.

Bertram Pincus is not a happy camper. He is a dentist, a profession in which he finds delight in preventing patients from talking with him. He is unmarried, friendless, a loner, meticulous, obtuse, at times ridiculous. When a birthday cake is laid on for a friendly colleague in his office, he sneaks out. To join in the celebration would make his skin crawl. He is nasty to innocent bystanders.

He does all of this in a British accent, almost between clenched teeth, and remains me a little of Terry-Thomas at full flood: an unmitigated bounder wrapped in propriety. He is about to have his moat breached. This assault is set in motion when a bus flattens Frank Herlihy ( Greg Kinnear ). Frank's death turns out to be linked to Bertram's colonoscopy. As you can imagine, Bertram is a man who considers a colonoscopy a grievous violation of privacy.

Bertram is technically dead for seven minutes during the procedure. (Don't put yours off; this is a microscopically rare phenomenon.) That makes him sort of half-dead, half-alive after he recovers, and as a result, he can see both living people and ghosts. This puts him in urgent demand among the ghosts, who yearn to communicate with their loved ones and need him as a medium. The most desperate ghost he encounters is Frank, who was having an affair with his yoga instructor, but now deeply regrets it and wants to communicate with Gwen, his widow ( Tea Leoni ).

Never mind about the plot details, which spin out in more or less obligatory fashion. Focus instead on Tea Leoni, lovable down to her toenails, and Frank, cursed by having to live (or die, that is) enveloped in guilt and gloom. Bertram recoils when a stranger approaches him. He is even more inconvenienced by ghosts. And he is the last man on earth who would attract Gwen, or be attracted by her, so of course he and Gwen find themselves falling in love, causing unspeakable frustration for Frank.

"Ghost Town" is a lightweight rom-com elevated by its performances. It is a reminder that the funniest people are often not comedians, but actors playing straight in funny roles. Consider Cary Grant in "Topper" (1937), the obvious inspiration for David Koepp , who directed and co-wrote "Ghost Town" with John Kamps . Because both Gervais and Kinnear seem so urgent in their desires, and because Tea Leoni has a seemingly effortless humor and grace, this material becomes for a while sort of enchanting.

Yes, it is required that the plot has some of its characters living happily ever after, and that requires some dialogue that is, excuse me, corny. I suppose it comes with the territory. There is poignancy in a subplot involving Dana Ivey as a woman who wants to communicate with her daughters, and indeed a whole crowd of ghosts hoping to send messages to the other side. We have this comforting notion of our deceased loved ones smiling down benevolently from heaven. Now that they're getting a good look at us, they're probably tearing out their hair.

I wasn’t really sure what to expect of Ghost Town , but it really won me over, a charming fantasy comedy featuring Ricky Gervais in his first lead role.

This came out during a brief moment where the comedian tried to establish himself as a leading man (which didn’t quite work out in the long run), but while I expected Gervais to be too naturally deadpan to pull off the more sincere moments I think he acquits himself really well here, (mostly) pulling off the different tones with his own unique personality at the centre to keep it all spinning.

He has to move this character from jaded misanthrope into gentler territory as Bertram gradually opens up, and while the film…

I remember seeing and loving this with my brother and granddad for the first time in 2008, and nothing's changed. Every time I watch this I expect to fall out of love with it, but it remains an underrated, genuinely laugh-out-loud funny guilty pleasure.

Sure, it's not perfect. There's a lot that makes no sense, and it has no originality whatsoever. But it has a big heart, consistent laughs, a great soundtrack, and excellent performances - not least from Ricky Gervais.

The final shot of Téa Leoni in the doorway is wonderful.

A droll charmer about a sad-sack dentist who can see dead people, David Koepp's "Ghost Town" is an effective romantic comedy that profits from its leading man and its supernatural twist. Starring Ricky Gervais as Bertram Pincus, the apparitionally afflicted, the film is light-weight but easily engaging.

Revolving around Pincus, whose near-death experience has left him with an eye for seeing ghosts, "Ghost Town" follows as Pincus begins to find purpose in his deceased acquaintances. He also finds himself enamored with a woman whose husband is able to provide relationship tips from the great beyond.

Koepp gives everything a handsome glow and light-touch, allowing Pincus's caustic sweetness to set the film's tone in the film's New York environs. It is…

"We just get one life, you know. Just one. You can't live someone else's or think it's more important just because it's more dramatic. What happens matters. Maybe only to us, but it matters."

Ghost Town relies on Ricky Gervais. His sarcastic persona saves the day. The film sets a quirky opening and a rather gentle ending. I have got to be honest that I had tons of laughs while watching this, especially when Gervais' character realizes that he sees dead people and considers it annoying instead of frightening. Moreover, I loved the film's sentimental note about death. All these emotional stuff about unfinished businesses just have a way to tug my being. And the movie seems a bit easy on that without even trying so hard. Of course, it's not the best thing in the world, but I surely did enjoy it.

His Task: Help Strangers Die Happily Ever After

ghost town with ricky gervais

By Stephen Holden

  • Sept. 18, 2008

A misanthropic dentist, a roguish ghost and a zany Egyptologist: as these unlikely companions scamper around Manhattan in the buoyant comedy “Ghost Town,” they resurrect the spirits of classic movie curmudgeons like W. C. Fields and such romantic comedians as Cary Grant and Carole Lombard in Woody Allen territory.

It would be easy to make too much of this froth, directed by David Koepp (screenwriter of Spielberg blockbusters) from a script he wrote with John Kamps. A latter-day hybrid of “Topper” and “Blithe Spirit” and a visual ode to autumn in New York, “Ghost Town” is a screwball comedy with no big surprises or hidden metaphors. But if you comb through the ranks of recent Hollywood comedies that have tried to conjure the same mood of airy amusement, most of what you’ll find are strained, witless duds that get mired in sentimentality like flies in molasses.

As it draws to a close, “Ghost Town” tiptoes to the edge of that sticky mess, but it doesn’t get caught there. Its snappy dialogue and sharp comic timing, and the offbeat chemistry of Ricky Gervais (in his first feature-film starring role), Greg Kinnear and Téa Leoni, keep it afloat.

The dentist, Bertram Pincus (Mr. Gervais), is a grumpy transplanted Briton who declares that he doesn’t mind crowds, just the people in them, and shuts up his yammering patients by stuffing dental equipment in their mouths. Bertram is extremely annoyed when, after a seven-minute near-death experience during a routine colonoscopy, he suddenly finds himself a middleman between the living and the dead.

On leaving the hospital he is besieged by anxious ghosts whom only he can see and hear. Trailing him around Manhattan, they pester him to take care of their unfinished business; only then can they happily disappear into the hereafter. As the living overhear him talking to the dead, the usual crossed signals and misunderstandings land him in trouble, but the movie doesn’t overdo it.

Mr. Gervais gives Bertram many of the same comic tics he brought to David Brent in “The Office” and Andy Millman in “Extras” : a stammering befuddlement that is simultaneously verbose and nonsensical; sickly smiles and joyless laughs in which his mirth curdles with self-doubt; a tongue-tied staccato; and his special mixture of clueless grandiosity, insensitivity and stifled humiliation.

Among the ghosts the most persistent noodge is Frank Herlihy (Mr. Kinnear), a slick yuppie go-getter with a cheating heart who in an early scene is struck by a bus while running away from a falling air-conditioner. Frank entreats Bertram to prevent his widow, Gwen (Ms. Leoni), from marrying Richard (Billy Campbell), a human-rights lawyer he believes is after her money, although the evidence he offers is flimsy. Gwen happens to live in the same Upper East Side apartment building as Bertram, and they have crossed paths many times. With each encounter Bertram has been monumentally rude, so befriending her is no easy task.

Mr. Kinnear, now that he has some lines on his face, is no longer a Ken doll exuding boyish naïveté. His genial martini-drinking charmer with a wandering eye and a raised brow is about as close as anyone has come in a recent movie to Cary Grant, who starred in the original “Topper” in 1937.

Most amusing of all is Ms. Leoni’s eccentric Egyptologist. Equally enamored of her enormous dog, which knocks her over now and again and whose odor triggers Bertram’s gag reflex, and a priceless mummy that is a centerpiece of a major exhibition she is putting together, Gwen solicits Bertram to conduct a professional examination of the mummy’s mouth.

Like Lombard’s and Jean Arthur’s plucky madcaps, Ms. Leoni’s Gwen is a gal who keeps a tight rein on her feelings. Crisp and self-reliant, she is all the more attractive for her apparent lack of interest in beauty, fashion and wedding bells. If the semiromantic connection she develops with Bertram (he’s smitten; she is interested but wary) isn’t totally convincing, theirs is a classic screwball relationship of sassy, openhearted combat. As Frank nags Bertram, and Bertram woos Gwen in his ridiculous way, the pace of mush-free repartee rarely flags.

“Ghost Town” is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned). It includes racy dialogue.

Opens on Friday nationwide.

U nlike Doctors and vets, dentists have had a raw deal in fiction and dramatic literature. They're variously comic (the newly qualified practitioner in George Bernard Shaw's You Never Can Tell; the impotent army dentist 'Painless' in M*A*S*H), sinister (the dentist who attempts to murder Leslie Banks in The Man Who Knew Too Much; Olivier's Nazi war criminal drilling Dustin Hoffman in Marathon Man), or weird (the itinerant dentist played by Daniel Day-Lewis who travels around Patagonia on a motor cycle in Eversmile New Jersey). Graham Greene, who had something of an obsession with teeth, made the hero of his best stage comedy, The Complaisant Lover, a sad dentist who talks of a Swinburne poem in which a woman loves a leper and asks, 'Is it so much more difficult to love a dentist?'

So given this dramatic lineage, dentistry would seem to be the perfect profession in which to place Ricky Gervais for his first major movie role after the successes on TV as David Brent, the repellent manager in The Office, and Andy Millman, the depressed minor actor in Extras. In David Koepp's Ghost Town he plays Bertram Pincus, a misanthropic British dentist practising in Manhattan. Long deserted by his girlfriend, he lives a reclusive bachelor existence, ignoring fellow tenants in his apartment block, stuffing his patients' mouths with swabs and plaster moulds to keep them quiet, and railing against the world. We first see him avoiding an office party given by a pleasant Indian colleague, and preparing himself for a colonoscopy, a procedure that affords the ultimate in comic humiliation in both its purging preparation and probing execution. Gervais extracts every available laugh from his predicament. On the way to the operating theatre he insults the female doctor and puts down the young anaesthetist: 'Are you here on a school field trip?' he asks.

His mistake is to insist on a total anaesthetic. This unnecessary demand results in a seven-minute experience of death that leaves him with a peculiar condition. He is the only person in New York who can see and talk to the ghosts that haunt the city. Other citizens merely sneeze when incorporeal revenants walk through them. These ghosts, condemned to live in limbo before completing their lives and moving on, batten on to Bertram, hoping he'll help them find earthly closure. Most prominent among them is the wealthy philanderer Frank Herlihy, played by the excellent Greg Kinnear, an actor whose range is somewhat broader than Gervais's. Here, he's a smooth, unsympathetic sophisticate. However, his attractive widow Gwen (Téa Leoni), an Egyptologist at the Metropolitan Museum, is kindly and vulnerable. Frank, regretting his selfish life, solicits Bertram's help in freeing her from the attentions of a humourless, self-centred human rights lawyer (Billy Campbell). This results in the clumsy, insensitive Bertram courting her himself.

The ghost aspect evokes an endless cycle of comic and sentimental movies. Director David Koepp, in addition to scripting Jurassic Park and Carlito's Way, has dabbled in the supernatural before, most notably the admirable little thriller Stir of Echoes, concerning occult goings on in Chicago. But the particular tradition to which Ghost Town belongs is, of course, that stemming from Dickens's A Christmas Carol. These stories of redemption and transformation include Bergman's deeply serious Wild Strawberries, the wholly comic Groundhog Day and, somewhere between them, It's a Wonderful Life.

Ebenezer Scrooge is at his best in his unreconstructed 'Bah! Humbug!' days when refusing to dilute his bitter black coffee with the milk of human kindness. He ceases to be fun when his ghostly encounters encourage him to start dispensing sweetness and light. And so it is with Ghost Town. Though hardly likely to become a perennial favourite, this enjoyable movie is funny, bracing and inventive for the first hour and much less so thereafter. Gervais is wonderfully uningratiating in his rejection of the glib 'Have a nice day' world around him. He has great lines, some wonderfully irrelevant, like 'Is there any more stupid form of precipitation than hail?' Few people do comedy of embarrassment with his style, or can deliver deliberately bad jokes in a way that makes the viewer laugh after they've failed to work on their intended recipient. In this case, he makes awful dental jokes that he has to apologise for when the reaction is quizzical eyebrows.

Unfortunately, the picture gets conventional when it modulates into orthodox romantic comedy between Bertram and Gwen, and sentimental when Bertram sets aside his WC Fields misanthropy to become Mr Nice Guy and help the ghosts complete their human destinies. But, as I've said, this is also the case with A Christmas Carol, as well as with It's a Wonderful Life and Groundhog Day or, to throw in another estimable picture, Tootsie. Indeed, Dustin Hoffman's somewhat mortifying speech about his moral transformation, delivered to Jessica Lange in a Manhattan street in Tootsie, is almost paraphrased on a similar location in Ghost Town.

The role is like a cross between the "boss from hell" characters Ricky Gervais plays as the museum director in "Night at the Museum" and David Brent in "the office."
