There are an estimated 6,000 superyachts — vessels that are more than 100 feet long — at sea in 2024

As summer reaches its peak across the Northern Hemisphere, it’s hard to imagine a better way of spending a vacation than channeling your inner ship captain and sailing across the ocean.

In recent years, yacht companies have reported a boom in sales — far from the decline that many in the industry feared, due to both the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic realities of the Russia-Ukraine War.

“I spent my days [in 2020] doing worst-case scenarios and drawing up the budgets to go with them,” Giovanna Vitelli, chairwoman of Azimut|Benetti, the world’s largest yacht manufacturer, told the Economist in 2023.

Instead, her company reported a 23% growth in production value in 2023 —a reality that is not unique to just one yacht manufacturer. The luxury yacht market is expected to grow in value from $7.67 billion in 2023 to $17.33 billion by 2032, according to a recent report from Fortune Business Insights .

Analysts attribute the ships’ rise in popularity to the increasing number of extremely wealthy individuals . Yachts have long been considered a status symbol — a reality that has only increased as wealth becomes concentrated in the hands of a small group of high status individuals .

There are an estimated 6,000 superyachts —vessels that are more than 100 feet long — at sea as of this year. This is nearly quadruple the number of yachts seen in the ocean just three decades ago, according to Bloomberg .

Aside from an increase in popularity, the yacht industry has seen other changes in recent years. Increasingly, those in the market for a luxury ship are turning to alternate means of powering their vessels, as critics point to the excess emissions traditional yachts produce simply for recreational use.

In their 2024 report, Fortune Business Insights highlighted the growing trend of electrification as a significant area of growth in the coming years.

“A tough regulatory environment for traditional yachts and rising fuel prices will pave the way for the solid growth of electric yachts in the future,” the report reads. “Huge investments from various manufacturers and government support measures will accelerate the demand for electric yachts.”

Carinthia VII

Originally constructed in 2002, the award-winning Carinthia VII was recently remodeled and reimagined specifically for private charters. The 319-foot ship spans six decks and can accommodate up to 12 guests in eight staterooms. Among the ship’s amenities are two bars, a fully equipped gym and an outdoor projection screen that allows for an “immersive cinematic experience like no other.” The cost of chartering the Carinthia VII is $1,525,700 during both the winter and summer seasons.

The Lady S yacht boasts a number of exciting water toys, including jet skis, water skis, wakeboards and kayaks for athletic guests on the 305-foot ship. For those who prefer more indoor-oriented activities, however, you can also catch a film on the ship’s IMAX Dolby cinema — the first of its kind on any yacht in the world. Accommodating 12 guests, in seven cabins, the cost of chartering the Lady S begins at $1,743,328 a week.

The interior of the Ahpo yacht seems more reminiscent of a luxury hotel than a simple ship. Accommodating 16 guests and 36 crew members, the vessel features a full-size gym, a winter garden and a spa complete with a Himalayan salt sauna. The 378-foot long yacht was first manufactured in 2021 by the German shipyard Lürssen. Excited sailors can charter the Ahpo from superyacht broker Edmiston, beginning at $2,833,376 a week.

500EXP Para Bellum

This 154-foot-long yacht can accommodate up to 12 travelers in its six cabins, along with up to 10 crew members. The ship was specially designed to enable “guests a 360-degree experience and relationship with the sea” through its unique stern and sundeck that allow travelers to safely stand “almost at sea level,” according to its Italian manufacturer San Lorenzo . Interested travelers can rent the ship for $359,609 a week.

The Renaissance

The Renaissance lives up to its grandiose name by going beyond traditional private yachts and bridging the gap between a personal vehicle and a full-on cruise ship. The 367-foot long ship features five decks and can accommodate 36 guests in 19 cabins. The Renaissance’s amenities include a 19-seat movie theater, a sushi-bar, and a full spa deck featuring a wellness area, plunge pools and a hair salon. The cost of chartering the ship from Burgess Yachts ranges from $3,269,280 to $3,814,160 a week.

Zhukovsky International Airport

Zhukovsky International Airport, formerly known as Ramenskoye Airport or Zhukovsky Airfield - international airport, located in Moscow Oblast, Russia 36 km southeast of central Moscow, in the town of Zhukovsky, a few kilometers southeast of the old Bykovo Airport. After its reconstruction in 2014–2016, Zhukovsky International Airport was officially opened on 30 May 2016. The declared capacity of the new airport was 4 million passengers per year.

These chic coastal interiors were inspired by the elegance of America's beloved former first lady, Jackie Kennedy

I t's not unusual to see elements of inspiration sashaying their way from the runways of haute couture into our house design , but a whole look inspired by one of America's most beloved style icons? That's got to be worth a second glance. 

The muse for this glamorous oceanfront home in Vancouver is Jackie Kennedy Onassis, America's first lady at the time of President John F Kennedy's assassination in 1963. The home is an elegant and timeless combination of both modern and traditional style, rather like Jackie O's outfits, and specifically took inspiration from her elegance on sailing trips, along with design trips to The Hamptons and close observation of vintage sailing craft. How does that all translate to the interior design of a family home? We asked designer Kelly Deck to explain the intriguing connection as she gives us the tour.  

Designer Kelly Deck's involvement with this extended Vancouver home began when the owners asked her to come up with some coastal decor ideas for a scheme that would seamlessly bring together their original home with an addition built on the recently acquired neighboring lot. The extension was built to accommodate the changing needs of the owners' growing family, and there are now 7 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms. The timely purchase of the plot next door meant the owners could stay in this most idyllic of locations, one block away from the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club. 

The home's prestigious location plays a big part in its design. 'We referenced the timeless and practical details, and materials of wood sailboats – the sun-kissed wood, the fastened details, the colors of rope, sail and sea,' says interior designer Kelly Deck. 'All these elements inspired our color scheme and the relaxed coastal feel.' And for the Jackie O connection, the design team looked at historical images of the American style icon on sailing trips or at the seaside. 'We wanted the home to have the same chic and restrained style,' says Kelly Deck. 

Kitchen ideas feature a classic coastal color scheme inspired by the property's ocean views. Blue, white, navy, gold, and natural wood all feature in the kitchen's palette, with the central island matching the exact shade of blue of the Le Cornue range.

Meanwhile, in the eat-in kitchen , the soft blue shades continue into a gallery wall display of vintage china, which adds another layer of character to the traditional meets modern blend. The baker's table is from Arcadia Antiques, with chairs by Coolican & Company and the sconces are from Visual Comfort.  

'We used a broad selection of finishes in this home. It has so many contained spaces – through archways and glazed oak doors that there were beautiful opportunities to create unique experiences from room to room,' says designer Kelly. 

The kitchen's transitional style is a perfect example of using a variety of different pieces and finishes, that all come together to give a relaxed, timeless look. From the historically inspired Urban Electric light fixtures and Vicostone countertop to the vintage-style rug from Tibetano and Walker Zanger backsplash, the kitchen has a beautifully curated look. 

Kelly's dining room ideas play on more contemporary design influences, with just the Visual Comfort chandeliers hinting at the more traditional areas of the home. The table is from Avenue Road, with dining chairs from Villa & House. The contemporary painting is by David Guenter, with neutral textured wallpaper by Holly Hunt. 

You're never far away from the home's deep verandas, which wrap around three sides of the property, giving it a stately and Southern sensibility. The hallway ideas invite the eye to appreciate the exteriors, with look-throughs onto the veranda. Walls with raised panels and ship lap detailing enhance the nautical narrative. 

Living room ideas here are quietly elegant, with gauze drapery to allow light to easily pass through into the home. The flooring throughout the main rooms is a wide plank, whitewashed white oak, which also helps to keep the space feeling light and bright. The chandeliers are by Urban Electric; fireplace by Jamb; lamp by Visual Comfort. The custom sofa is by Kelly Deck Design, teamed with a blue armchair by Lee Industries and a white one by Baker furniture. 

Home office ideas for the man of the house include smart navy millwork, with a carved rope motif molding, navy grasscloth walls and cognac leather accents, the whole creating a nautical look. The desk chair is by Herman Miller; custom sofa and ottoman by Kelly Deck Design; rug by East India Carpets; ceiling wallpaper by Phillip Jeffries; light by Hector Finch; and hardware by Myoh. 

The exquisite principal bedroom is light, bright, and very layered, with bedroom ideas furnished in white, linen, and different hues of blue. 

You could argue that with windows on two sides and stunning views of the ocean and passing yachts, a room like this has little need for coastal bedroom ideas , yet Kelly's scheme enhances the setting in with the darker blue furnishings reflecting the ocean shades, and the very pale blue ceiling detail (Sherwin Williams' Misty) making a gentle reference to the sky-blue outside. The chandelier is from Currey & Company.

The design team particularly loves the kids' room ideas they created for the family's youngest members. This one features an under-ocean theme with matching wallpaper and draperies that designer Kelly found in Paris. The soft blue shades are in keeping with the color themes elsewhere in the house, so there's a harmonious look while still adding a touch of individuality to the space. 

There are 8 bathrooms to choose from in this property, but this ensuite to the primary bedroom really is something else. On the face of it, it's a very neutral scheme: all white with gold highlights, but look closer to appreciate the textures and layers created within that very limited palette. It's the kind of space that has Jackie O written all over it! Key details include pendant lights by Hudson Valley Lighting, faucets by House of Rohl, tiles by Ann Sacks and tub by Victoria & Albert. 

The outside space and patio ideas were an important part of the home's design, since this veranda surrounds the home on three sides and gives access to those ocean views. 

'Our team worked closely with architect Eric Stine and landscape architect Paul Sangha on the exterior color scheme, endeavoring to keep it light and romantic,' says designer Kelly. 'Our final selections were: parchment colored cedar shake, white trim, cedar shake roof, beautiful copper pipes as well as buff-colored natural stone in large format for all patio areas.' Good quality outdoor furniture and frothy container plantings in the same soft palette are the perfect complements to finish the look. 

Thinking back over the project as a whole, inside and out, designer Kelly says: 'We wanted the home to feel lighthearted, youthful and airy. We also wanted to create the presence and substance of a historical home that had been standing for generations.' 

We think that's mission accomplished.

Search. Mainsail Reefing Systems. Mainsail reefing systems must operate effciently to reduce sail under adverse conditions and provide proper sail shape when reefed. These systems are a must for both racers and cruisers. Typical Boat Length: Small Boat: 22' - 28' (6.7 - 8.5 m) Midrange: 29' - 34' (8.8 - 10.4 m) Big Boat: 35' - 42' (10.7 - 12.8 m)

Traditional slab reefing is a much more simple and classic approach. Slab reefing is intended for use on boats where the halyards are left at the mast. This system also uses just one line per reef; but this line is only responsible for the out-board/clew-end reef. Typically the in-board/tack-end is then reefed separately either.

A mainsail reefing system should be reliable, quick to operate and produce an adequate sail shape once reefed. In this article we discuss four options for taking a reef in the main. Conventional Slab Reefing . Perhaps the most common form of slab reefing is with a 2:1 reef line at the clew and a ram's horn at the gooseneck.

Reefing your mainsail. Ease the main-sheet. This will cause the mainsail to luff, stabilizing the boat by reducing heel and easing the tension on the mainsail making it easier to drop. Reduce Tension on the boom vang. This will allow the boom to move up or down dependent on where the reefing points are located on the mainsail.

Release the backstay tension. Make sure the boom is at the correct angle. Point the yacht into the wind. Take in on the furling line as you ease the halyard at a steady rate. Some sailors swear by mainsail furling systems, others swear at them. Graham Snook looks at way to keep your furling mainsail in check.

There are many different systems for reefing the mainsail these days, but the most common system is slab reefing. This is the way that 90% of the fleet will reef their mainsail, and when done correctly it is the simplest and most reliable system. ... Head upwind to take load off the sail. Ease the jib halyard so the cringle in the reef point is near the deck. Attach the luff cringle to the reef hook or tie it to the base of the forestay. An efficient and effective mainsail reefing system will make any sailing boat - whether a small weekender, offshore racer or ocean cruiser - easier to handle, faster and safer. The most common choice for modern yachts is slab reefing, in which there are typically three reefs that are progressively pulled down to shorten sail as the wind increases.

Tighten and make fast the reefing tack line, or put the tack cringle onto the gooseneck hook, ring or shackle. Hoist the main halyard until the luff is firm and wrinkle-free. Take in the reefing clew line, or luff cringle, via a boom winch or tackle as much as possible, and make fast. Ease the main topping lift.

Reliable headsail furling systems have certainly achieved that goal, but reefing the mainsail still presents a dilemma. In-mast and in-boom furling systems deserve a mention here.

The majority of yachts, specifically over 75%, utilize the slab-reefing technique as their preferred method for reefing the mainsail. However, as the size of the boat increases, there is a noticeable trend towards adopting systems that allow the sail to be furled within the spar itself.

Single Line Reefing: This method works very much like two line reefing, except that one line is run through both reef points (Figure 5) and then only that line is tightened to secure the reef. This can be the simplest system to put a reef in, but can be one of the more problematic to get to work smoothly because it may have a lot of friction.

Align the strap parallel to the boom and far enough aft so that the mainsail won't bind up against the strap when you reef the sail. Attach one end of the reefing line to this strap with either a knot or a spliced eye. 3. Attach one cheek block to the boom on the opposite side of the boom from the eye strap.

26m G.L. Watson-designed yacht Lady Hertha listed for sale

The 26.2-metre Yarrow motor yacht Lady Hertha has been listed for sale with Tim Langmead of Fraser .

Delivered by the Scottish yard in 1935 as Destiny , Lady Hertha was built from steel and is one of the rare vessels by G.L. Watson, a renowned designer responsible for the yacht's interior and exterior. Cared for by a meticulous owner and an experienced permanent crew, the yacht for sale is in turnkey condition and Cayman-flagged.

The broker added: “When it comes to classic yacht design there are few designers more rarefied than G.L. Watson, a storied designer of iconic yachts with glorious heritage [...] Yachts like this don't come along very often."

Lady Hertha accommodates up to six guests across three cabins located on the lower deck, including a wooden-clad master suite, VIP and twin cabin. Historically, there was a twin bunk bed cabin at the second entrance to the master cabin – something which could be reinstated with woodwork should the owner choose to have a four-cabin arrangement.

On deck, the yacht is characterised by her varnished surfaces – spanning tabletops, handrails and wooden panelling. Guests can make the most of the outdoor dining options, comprising the main deck aft and upper deck under an awning. There is also ample space for lounging.

The yacht has been systematically surveyed and refitted each year, with her 2024 refit and yard works including new shafts and exhaust systems.

The RINA-classed yacht is powered by twin diesel engines and covers approximately 3,000 nautical miles. She has a top speed of 11 knots and cruising speed of nine knots.

Currently lying in Cannes, France, Lady Hertha is asking €3,950,000.
