History from 3,000 and more years has never really ignored Athens, from its regional domination as a city-state many Millennia ago to Rome and then subjugation by the Ottoman Empire until recent times.

Athens is a city of immense depth and breadth that could really only be understood with years of scholarship and exploration. Ancient ruins such as the Acropolis sit side by side architecture that has been built through the ages. Greek cuisine of flavours influenced by different ages and times and a laid back attitude that can bewitch the visitor as soon as they arrive until long after they leave.

As a seafaring nation, Greece has long had an influence on the maritime world. Shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis is a 20th Century example of the country's trading power that stems from as far back as Minoan times long before history was properly written. An Athens yacht charter can follow routes taken by millions over thousands of years and today you can enjoy the now or the past of whatever age of civilisation you seek.

Explore Athens By Renting A Yacht

The Greece yacht charter industry is one of the oldest and best-established on the Mediterranean. The facilities are very good and infrastructure - and even many Greek island economies - built around it. You can get out to the DodecaneseIslands, Ionian Sea and the Argolic Gulf, all of which have great yacht charter infrastructure.

Whether on a bareboat, skippered or crewed yacht charter, an Athens yacht charter can start at Alimos Marina, just 20 minutes from the city centre. If you can, do spend a day exploring the main city before you head off - hit the Acropolisand nearby Marathon if you can as well as exploring the rest of the city.

A luxury yacht charter out of Athens can involve one of a number of ultimate destinations. Close-by to the southeast of the city, and best accessed from Laviron, the Cyclades Islands (pronounced 'kickladeez'), to include Paros, Naxos, Andros, Kinthos and Kea have ancient ruins from the days before Rome. They are extremely popular among yachtcharterers and you will find all manner of things from party towns to museums as you go.

The Saronic Gulf is to the northwest of Athens. Out of Alimos Marina, an island or coast-hopping sailing holidaywhere you can sail offshore to the Saronic Islands of Poros, Aegina, and Agistri as you explore this region.

How To Get To Athens

Athens Airport

More than 80 airlines fly into Athens Airport from all over the world.

Getting to Alimos Marina or Laviron Marina from there will involve either a bus, private hire minibus or taxi. It is cheaper but far slower by bus to the marinas, but for a party of 4 it could pay to go by taxi to the marinas as at €45 per trip this amounts to just €11.25 per head. Though quicker by taxi to both marinas it can take 45 minutes - or far more in heavy traffic.

Suggested Sailing Routes From Athens

The Cyclades Islands and Saronic Gulf are the primary destinations for those on an Athens yacht charter. Alimos Marina is a major charter yacht hub and is better than Olympic Marina Laviron for this, while Laviron is better suited to the Cyclades Islands.

7 days - Alimos Marina - Saronic Gulf - Spetses: With the very popular holiday island of Aegina as a first port, you then head SW across the gulf to Epidauros with its ancient ruins. Hydra is your next port of call with no cars allowed there and donkeys still the heavy transport mode of choice. Spetses itself played a major role in the recent Greek War of Independence, and still has the ruins of a Russian naval base. Island and coast-hop your way back.

7 days - Olympic Marina - Southern Cyclades: Kea is just a short hop from Laviron and can be done the evening you board the boat. There are a number of safe marinas and anchorages there so don't worry about being late! Mykonos is one of the best known Greek islands - do visit Little Venice where the sea goes right up to the buildings' walls. The nightlife is off the scale too! Loutra in Kynthos has hot medicinal springs and great coves for sea swimming.

14 days - Laviron to Santorini: The volcanic island of Santorini is one of the most famous sights in Greece short of the Acropolis. Heading out through the southern Cyclades islands including Paros, Mykonos and Aegean jewel of Ios, you will arrive in Santorini before turning west towards Folegandros, Serifos and Kynthos before returning to port.

Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Athens

The sailing season runs from late April to October with July and August being the busiest months for yacht charter. This is ironic as July and August can be the worst times to sail! Both extremely hot air temperatures and often hazardous Meltemi winds can make for big winds sailing when you honestly just want to hide from the heat.

The sea is cooler - often quite chilly - at the beginning of the sailing season but there is rainfall in Spring. As the days lengthen you will still see green fields and flowers in May and the winds can be quite benign too. Combined with the crowds being smaller, this suggests that May to early June are the sweet spot for an Athens yacht charter.

Come September and October the seas are still like a warm bath. However there are often water shortages on the islands and everything looks parched.

Sailing Weather In Athens

April to mid June: There is rainfall and the temperatures build steadily from the mid-teens to the mid 20 degree C range. There are sometimes gentle southerly winds, thoough these are replaced by ever stronger N-NW Meltemi winds that are rarely hazardous but make for exciting sailing at times.

Late June-August: You'll be unlucky if you see any rain, though it could be welcome in the summer heat! Temperatures are from 30s with recent hot days exceeding 40. The northerly Meltemi winds can be fierce and can hit F7 for a solid few days.

September-October: The seas remain warm and the Meltemi eases. These months can be the best time of year to sailas the temperatures are often in the comfortable low to mid 20s.

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

Alimos Marina is the larger of the two marinas with a number of yacht charter companies working out of it. Use this for the Saronic Gulf, though you can explore the Cyclades too. Olympic Marina in nearby Laviron is half the size but better equipped, and is good for a Cyclades sailing holiday.

May to June are the best times of year to go on a sailing vacation out of Athens thanks to the comfortable heat and gentler sailing conditions. Most islands have water supplies too. July and August are fiercely hot and the Meltemi winds can be fierce, but even so are the most popular months for a boat rental in Greece.

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat hire before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

We are confident that our prices are the most competitive and transparent in the market.

We won't charge any booking fees when you make a booking with us.

We have the highest number of verified and vetted boats available on the market.

Sail Greece Yachts was founded in 1985 by two close friends who love sailing, Giannis Makridakis and Vassilis Patiniotis . We try to think like customers and we care about making friends that enjoy sailing rather than clients.

We charter our own privately owned sailing yachts without any commission so you can rely on reasonable rental prices and immediate and personal support .

We are proud to have happy customers in most countries of the world and are even more proud that many are willing to provide personal recommendations to those thinking about using our boats. We invite you to have a look at our testimonials and we will be happy to provide a personal contact in your country who will be happy to testify to our services!

Sailing Charters to the Greek Islands

Greece is home to over 1400 islands running from isolated islets to some of the most famous islands in the world (Santorini or Mykonos anyone?). No matter what your tastes run to: secluded beaches, nightlife and culture, archaeological and historical sites… or a combination of everything together, you will find a suitable island in Greece. We guarantee, if you like sailing, you are going to love sailing in Greece!

One of the great advantages of sailing in Greece is the small distances between many of the islands. If you have a week (or even a weekend!) you may easily visit islands in the Saronic Gulf or the Cyclades from Athens. If you have longer than a week then take your time and relax, exploring your chosen islands in greater detail, or visit more islands to tick them off your holiday checklist!

For more information we invite you to browse our suggested sailing routes with details on popular island itineraries and sailing distances. For the more practically minded bareboat sailors, the fantastic Greek Cruisers Wiki offers many details on sailing in Greece and the marinas and facilities available on various islands.

Crewed Yacht Charters

Sail Greece is pleased to offer fully crewed charters upon request. With our crewed charters your boat comes with a crew to sail your boat and a hostess to prepare your meals on board. The safety and management of the boat is the responsibility of your captain while day to day shopping and preparation of the meals is the duty of your hostess. You simply sit back and enjoy your stress free and relaxing sailing vacation in Greece! Contact us for more details.

Testimonials

Outstanding service and very reasonable prices.

There is no reason to try out any other charter company in Greece!

Our trips with Sail Greece have been fantastic!!!

I highly reccommend Sail Greece to those who want to experience sailing in Greece.

If you are thinking about using Sail Greece I could not recommend them highly enough.

You can immediately see the care and attention to detail that The Sail Greece crew take with their boats.

We had a wonderful trip thanks to you, Tomas and the rest of the crew.

I fully recommend Giannis and Sail Greece as good partners for smooth sailing!

Bareboat or Skippered?

We offer both bareboat and skippered yacht charters depending on the need of each client and group.

Bareboat yacht charters require at least one member of the rental party to have a valid International Certificate of Competence  or a national equivalent.

If you are new to sailing or want to kick back and relax, we work with a select group of  skippers who will be happy to show you the best of the Greek islands  no matter what your taste!

Rent a Boat in Athens and Open New Greece

Traveling by sea is an excellent option for everyone who is tired of traditional vacations or being tied to one certain place. When you select a water vehicle, you receive a unique opportunity to visit a lot of wonderful and unique locations and, additionally, enjoy beautiful views, which can only be seen from the sea. Moreover, you are free to organize your own resort on your boat , playing favorite music at full volume or relaxing in silence, which will be interrupted only by water lapping and seagulls. And even more amazing is the possibility to swim in clear waters of amazing remote bays far away from crowded beaches.

General Information

If you are interested in this exclusive way of spending holidays in Athens but don’t have your own boat or don’t know where to rent one, this is not a problem. Thanks to the qualitative rental service provided by 12 Knots in Athens , everyone has a chance to rent a water vehicle and enjoy sailing vacations. The rental agency 12 Knots successfully runs its business since 2009, and it is a leading charter broker facility. This company is quite famous for offering only rental services but also a sailing school. It is possible to find 12 Knots Club’s representatives in more than 36 amazing locations all around the world. You can choose any destination, from the Bahamas to Rhodes. One of the most popular placements for sailing is Athens , Greece .

Why You Should Choose Athens for Yacht Charter

A lot of tourists, as well as locals, choose Athens for their traveling by boat . The popularity of this location is understandable – you can see all showplaces in Acropolis (for example, Parthenon and Daphni Monastery), visit interesting excursions, and enjoy the unique atmosphere of the Old City. After that, you take a boat at the local port and go to explore the stunning surroundings of Athens and small islands , which are no less stunning than the capital of Greece is. In addition, thanks to the city’s settlement, you have a chance to sail in the Sardonyx gulf and the Aegean Sea. Moreover, sailing conditions in these waters are great. The Aegean Sea is considered to be the calmest sea in the world. Additionally, you will be pleasantly surprised with the cloudless weather but still mild climate.

The Best Time for Sailing Vacations in Athens

The best time for sailing vacations in Athens is a period of a warm half of the year. The most popular season for sailing is the second half of spring, the summer months, and the first half of autumn. The winter season is not appropriate for sail because of the windy weather at sea.

Difficulty Level

12 Knots takes care of customers regardless of their experience and skills in shipping. Therefore, it is possible to either crewed or bareboat yacht. The first option is obviously suitable for newbies or those who want to relax and forget about any difficulties. At the same time, experienced users select a bareboat charter in Athens . In this case, one should know that there could be problems with vehicle driving. The sea is unpredictable; so, you should be ready to cope with stormy weather. Therefore, do not choose a bareboat charter in Athens for the long term if you do not have enough experience in sailing . If you are an experienced captain and have a plan to visit other European coasts, then do not forget that you need to have an international sailing certificate like RYA Day Skipper, IYT Bareboat Skipper, ASA 104 plus IPC.

Of course,  sailing  vacation takes a little more effort for its qualitative organization. However, 12 Knots Yachting Club assures stable support during the booking procedure as well as the vacation period. More often, difficulties are related to the transfer activities in unfamiliar locations. So, it is convenient to select the option “Transfer on request” from the list of additional services. In this case, you will save your time and energy.

Main Charter Bases

12 Knots has many charter bases to ensure clients’ convenience. Main stations are:

What Vehicle Type to Select If You Rent a Boat in Athens

Sail yachts

The most popular vehicle for charter is a sailing yacht . 12 Knots team offers a great number of these boats – 1545. This vehicle assures your comfort and safety in both long-term travel and a day trip. Thanks to the wide variety of options, you can choose a yacht in accordance with your preferences and plans. For instance, if you are going to travel with friends, you can choose Maxus 22 Prestige, Sun Odyssey 32i, or Elan 333, which have 6 sleeping places. However, if you want to spend a weekend with your date, a boat with 1 cabin would be enough.

Powerboat is the best variant for tourists, who want to visit as many places as possible but do not have a lot of time, and those who prefer speed. Motorboats of all sizes with a professional crew are available for booking as well.

You can select one from 641 catamarans offered by 12 Knots if you are not planning a long-term trip. A catamaran is a perfect option for a picnic, fishing, and other outdoor activities with your family and friends. When you rent a catamaran, you receive a comfortable compact vehicle. In addition, a catamaran is quite easy to operate; so, you can practice and improve your driving skills.

Gulet  rent  is appropriate for big companies and long comfortable trips. 12 Knots Club proposes 13 types of gulets. The greatest of them are quite big. For example, Cosmos has a length of 24.8 m, Aphrodite is 25 m, and M/S Harmonia is 26 m. The offered gulets can place from 5 to 20 people.

Additional Travel Information

All offered boats are serviceable and insured. In addition, you can buy additional insurance (Damage Waiver) to minimize your liability.

In the heart of the Mediterranean, the sapphire blue sea encloses a land where the ancient gods once reigned supreme, a world carved by the patient yet relentless hands of geological time. Like the scorching sun kissing the landscape of olive groves and ancient ruins, the essence of Greece seems forever entwined with the sea that surrounds it. In this context, the prospect of renting a yacht in Greece becomes not merely a luxury holiday, but an immersion into an ecosystem that thrums with historical resonance and marine biodiversity.

Embracing the Call of the Aegean

Yacht Rental Greece

Renting a yacht in Greece provides the traveller with an unrivalled way to experience the shimmering necklace of islands that scatter across the Aegean and Ionian Seas . Each island, with its unique topography and diverse array of fauna, becomes a world in itself, ripe for exploration. As you sail from harbour to secluded cove, from bustling port to the tranquillity of an untouched beach, the grand theatre of life unfolds before your eyes. Yachting opens up opportunities for encounters with the playful dolphins that escort you through the waves, the regal falcons soaring above rocky crags, and the ceaseless rhythm of the tides that have whispered the same tune for eons.

A stop in Santorini allows you to explore the winding streets and sample locally-produced wines, grown in the island's unique volcanic soil.

The next anchor point is the bustling island of Mykonos , another Cycladic gem. Known for its vibrant nightlife and charming old town, Mykonos is a haven for lovers of culture and merriment. Explore the narrow alleyways dotted with boutique shops and fine restaurants, or marvel at the iconic windmills overlooking the azure Aegean Sea.

🚢 Delos: The Birthplace of Apollo

A short sail from Mykonos, you find the uninhabited island of Delos, an archaeological sanctuary and the mythological birthplace of the twin gods Apollo and Artemis. The island offers a unique opportunity to delve into ancient history, with the remains of temples, houses, and the iconic Terrace of the Lions standing as silent testament to a bygone era.

As you leave the lively shores of Mykonos, your yacht carries you to the largest island of the Cyclades, Naxos. Here, verdant mountains and fertile valleys teem with olive groves and vineyards. The Ionian Sea invites you next to Ithaca, famed as the home of Homer's Odysseus. Its rugged coastlines, laced with hidden coves and secluded beaches, beckon you to moor your yacht and explore. Ithaca's interior is a world of ancient olive trees, charming villages, and paths that whisper tales of the legendary king's long journey home.

🚢 Athens:  Yachting at the Cradle of Civilization

Its modern marinas, rich mining history, and proximity to ancient temples make it a unique yachting destination. Experience the blend of antiquity and elegance as you embark on a Lavrio yachting adventure.

🚢 Hydra: The Island of Artists

Closer to mainland Greece, nestled in the Saronic Gulf, Hydra emerges as a haven for artists. Motor vehicles are absent from this island, giving it a timeless feel. It is a place where donkeys still carry goods through narrow stone alleys, and grand sea captain's mansions harken back to Hydra's maritime past. Its picturesque harbour and crystal clear waters are sure to charm.

🚢 Symi: The Neoclassical Wonder

Your next stop is Symi, part of the Dodecanese islands. Upon entering Symi's harbour, you are greeted by a stunning amphitheatre of neoclassical houses, cascading down the hills to the vibrant, azure bay. Symi offers a peaceful retreat, with tranquil beaches and a slower pace of life. Don't miss a visit to the Monastery of the Archangel Michael Panormitis, a place of spiritual serenity.

🚢 Kefalonia: The Blue and Green Island

Returning to the Ionian Sea, Kefalonia awaits. This island is a paradise of diverse landscapes, featuring towering mountains, lush vineyards, and golden beaches. Melissani Cave with its ethereal blue waters is a must-visit, as is Myrtos Beach, often hailed as one of the most stunning beaches in Greece.

🚢 Skiathos: The Sporades' Star

Skiathos is the gem of the Sporades islands. This small but lively island is known for its golden sandy beaches, turquoise waters and the verdant pine forests that reach the sea. The medieval Bourtzi fortress, situated on a small peninsula in Skiathos Town, offers panoramic views of the Aegean.

🚢 Zakynthos: The Flower of the Levant

Your final destination is Zakynthos in the Ionian Islands. Here, the famous Navagio beach, also known as Shipwreck Beach, is an unmissable sight. The turquoise waters and the dramatic cliffs make for unforgettable swimming and sightseeing. On the island's western coast, the Blue Caves are a spectacular natural formation accessible only by boat, and an ideal spot to observe the marine life of the Ionian Sea.

Embarking on this voyage, the spirit of Greece unfurls before you like a canvas of blue and white, imprinted with history and graced by nature's generous hand. Each island, each wave carries a story, waiting to be discovered on your journey across the Grecian seas.

The Considerations of Voyage: A Primer on Yacht Rental

Yacht Rental Greece

Embarking on a yacht rental in Greece necessitates careful consideration of numerous factors to ensure the journey is not only enjoyable, but also respectful of the delicate marine ecosystems you traverse.

⛵ Seasons and Climate

The Mediterranean climate, with its dry summers and mild, wet winters, dictates the rhythms of life in the Grecian seas. The peak yachting season aligns with the sun-drenched days from May to October. Outside these months, the waters can be turbulent, the skies grey and the weather unpredictable.

⛵ Nautical Skills

A keen understanding of nautical navigation and maritime safety is essential. Many yacht rentals offer the service of an experienced skipper, adept at reading the changing moods of the sea. They serve as your guide through the waters, ensuring a safe passage while you soak in the beauty of the Grecian archipelagos.

⛵ Environmental Consciousness

As an unobtrusive visitor to the marine environment, it is incumbent upon you to uphold a sense of environmental stewardship. Waste disposal, energy consumption, and respect for local wildlife are all aspects that need to be managed responsibly to protect the enchanting biodiversity of the Grecian seas.

The Ideal Vessel: Choosing Your Yacht

The choice of your vessel is paramount, and largely dependent on the desired balance of luxury, speed, and capacity. For the sun-soaked waters of Greece, several types of yachts offer a unique blend of these features.

⛵ The Luxury Superyacht

For those seeking utmost indulgence, the luxury superyacht is an unrivalled choice. Equipped with an array of modern amenities, the superyacht offers a level of comfort that rivals any five-star resort. Yet, it goes beyond this. Imagine waking to a changing view each morning, the endless blue stretching out before you as the shoreline transforms from the honey-hued cliffs of Santorini to the verdant hills of Zakynthos.

⛵ The Sleek Catamaran

The catamaran offers stability and ample space, with its twin-hulled design. This is an ideal choice for families or larger groups. Their shallower draft allows you to navigate closer to the islands, exploring hidden coves and secluded beaches. The gentle rhythm of the catamaran ensures a smooth journey across the placid summer seas of Greece.

⛵ The Classic Sailing Yacht

For the true sailing aficionado, there is nothing quite like a traditional sailing yacht. Harnessing the power of the wind, these vessels offer a more intimate experience with the elements. Sailing yachts demand a greater degree of skill and knowledge, but reward with an exhilarating connection to the sea and the wind.

In the radiant glow of the Grecian sun and the lull of the undulating sea, the act of yachting in Greece becomes not just a journey through space, but also through time. A voyage that carries the promise of encounters with awe-inspiring ecosystems, of rediscovering the ancient roots of Western civilisation, and of basking in the tranquil luxury that only a yacht can offer. It is, in essence, a way of becoming part of the timeless narrative of the sea.

Navigating Your Grecian Voyage: Addressing Common Queries

In our shared voyage across the sparkling waters and sun-drenched isles of Greece, we understand that many questions may arise. Here, we anticipate your inquiries, addressing them in the spirit of shared discovery and our mutual fascination for this ancient sea-bound nation.

What is the best time to rent a yacht in Greece?

The best time to embark on a yachting journey in Greece is typically between May and October, when the Mediterranean climate offers warm, sun-filled days and calm seas. This period is the high season for yacht rentals, offering a perfect blend of favourable weather and vibrant island life.

What kind of yacht should I rent?

The choice of yacht is largely dependent on your personal preferences and needs. For larger groups and families, a catamaran offers ample space and stability. If luxury and comfort are paramount, consider a superyacht, which offers a host of modern amenities. For those seeking a more intimate connection with the sea, a traditional sailing yacht can be an exhilarating choice.

Do I need a license to sail in Greece?

The Greek authorities require at least one member of the crew to have a valid International Certificate of Competence (ICC) or an equivalent national certificate from your country of residence. If you do not have sailing qualifications, hiring a skipper is a popular option. The skipper can safely navigate the boat while you relax and enjoy the journey.

How can I respect the environment during my yacht rental?

Practicing environmentally friendly sailing involves a variety of measures. Be mindful of waste disposal - many yachts are equipped with holding tanks or you can dispose of waste at port facilities. Limit your use of single-use plastics on board, and respect the local wildlife by maintaining a safe distance. Finally, be conscious of your energy consumption and try to maximise the use of sails over the engine when possible.

Can I visit multiple islands during my yacht rental?

Absolutely. The beauty of renting a yacht is the freedom it offers to explore multiple destinations. The Greek islands are well-suited to island hopping, with many desirable locations in close proximity to one another. This allows you to discover the unique charm of each island at your own pace.

In sharing these answers, we hope to enhance your understanding of what a yachting adventure in Greece entails. As always, our journey is enriched by your curiosity, and we stand ready to navigate these enchanting waters alongside you.

Crystal blue shores of old main port in Hydra, Greece

Jetsetters have long adored Hydra for yacht charters , largely owing to its heavenly seascapes. The sheltered island enthralls guests onshore, who feel as if they have stepped into a bygone era: no cars roam around, just donkeys who hobble around its picture-perfect, labyrinthine streets and harbor. Soaring escarpments set the scene for sun-drenched meals under a lingering sun, with seafood served so fresh that it's practically dripping straight from the water. Abound with ancient ruins, make sure you also pay a visit to the Catacombs of Milos near the village of Tripiti , and the achingly pretty hilltop Venetian Castle of Milos .

History and Culture

Greeks are fiercely proud of their heritage and culture. Marvelous regional traditions permeate mainland Greece and the Greek islands, ranging from religion to music, language to food and even wine, making a Greek yacht charter a truly thrilling experience.

Types of Yacht Charters in Greece

Superyacht Irimari underway in Greek waters

Greece has a very diverse yacht charter market, so you can be sure to find the perfect yacht for you and your charter party. There’s a wide variety of motor yachts for charter , as well as sailing yachts and traditional Turkish gulets.

However, be aware that all yachts wishing to begin or end a yacht charter in Greece must be in possession of a valid Greek charter license. Speak to a  yacht charter broker for more information.

If you’re unsure about the type of yacht you’d like to charter, here are some things to consider first.

Motor Yacht Charters in Greece

Charter yacht at anchor in a quiet cove in greece

For those looking to rent a motor yacht  in Greece, you’ll find a wide range to choose from.

The most common type of motor yacht you can hire in Greece is a yacht with a planing hull. Stylish, sporty and speedy, they’re great for zipping between islands quickly and ensuring you get the most out of your itinerary. If you’re looking to spend most of your time on land or splashing in the sea, a yacht with a planing hull is the top choice for you.

You’ll also find a superb selection of displacement and semi-displacement superyachts at your disposal (pictured above). These are typically larger and more stable at anchor, with more onboard space for facilities and amenities such as gyms, movie theaters and wellness suites. They’re ideal if you’re chartering with a large group, particularly one that includes children.

Sailing Yacht Charters in Greece

Greece is a playground for sailing yacht rentals , with plenty of yachts available throughout summer. A combination of light winds, clear skies and plenty of anchorages create great sailing conditions across all the islands.

The most popular destinations for sailing charters are typically Corfu, Kefalonia , and the Sporades Islands . Other destinations are equally desirable, including the Cyclades and the Dodecanese islands - but be aware that these areas typically encounter more winds. This means it might be more challenging to drop anchor, and you will have to consider spending more nights in port.

Gulet Yacht Charters in Greece

Gulet yacht at anchor in Greece

A gulet is a traditionally Turkish-built sailing yacht made out of wood. They are usually two or three-masted and are typically much larger than your average sailing yacht.   Luxury gulet yacht charters  in Greece are very appealing alternatives to both sailing and motor yacht charter. While they usually rely on their motor underway, they are very fuel-efficient and don't require a lot of fuel to get from point A to point B. They have displacement hulls which make them very stable and seaworthy, and typically offer lots of volume and open-plan living spaces.

Greek gulet yachts also tend to be cheaper than other types of charter as they sometimes offer all-inclusive or semi-inclusive packages, meaning you don’t need to worry about additional expenses such as food and drink. They also normally include a standard number of cruising hours per day.  Plus, their crew are often local to the region that they cruise in, meaning they can double as tour guides and have a lot of expertise and valuable insight into the area.

But be aware- many gulets are Turkish-flagged, meaning they will need to hold a Greek charter license to start or finish a charter in Greece.

How Much Does it Cost to Charter a Yacht in Greece?

The price of a Greece yacht charter vacation varies depending on a number of factors, including the type of yacht, the age of the yacht, and the month in which you choose to charter.

  • A Greece motor yacht rental can range from $33,000 to $1.8m per week plus expenses
  • A sailing yacht charter in Greece averages from $27,200 to $559k weekly plus expenses

In Greece, VAT on a yacht charter is charged at 24% and is based on the value of the yacht. However, this figure can be reduced if the yacht meets specific criteria.

The three tax brackets are as follows;

  • VAT at full 24%: applies to charters that take place in Greek waters without exiting to non-EU or International waters (Staying within the six nautical miles limit)
  • VAT at 24%: with a deduction option for time spent outside of EU waters or in international waters.
  • Discounted at 50% (VAT 12%):for yachts that spend a minimum of 60 % of charter time/days outside of territorial waters. (Territorial waters are considered: six nautical miles from the mainland and six nautical miles from the territorial waters of an island). This also applies to yachts charters commencing outside EU territory and that remain outside for more than 60% of the chartered days and end their charter in Greece.

Greek Charter Licences Explained

When is the Best Time for Greek Yacht Charters?

Quiet cove in Greece

The best time for Greek yacht rentals is between July and August, but warm weather typically extends well into September and even May in certain destinations. The peak of the charter season is usually July, although August historically has the hottest temperatures.

Between June and August, you can expect highs of 85 - 90 degrees Fahrenheit (26 - 32 degrees Celsius) in Athens, with even hotter temperatures recorded further south.

Where Should I Begin My Greece Yacht Charter?

Aerial view of Piraeus, the busiest passenger port in Europe

By far the most common embarkation point for a  Greece yacht rental vacation is Athens . Around 90% of the Greek charter fleet has a homeport in Athens, and there are numerous luxury marinas that cater to superyachts.

However, for those looking to charter around the Ionian Islands in destinations like Corfu , Cephalonia and Zakynthos , you may wish to begin your charter closer to your desired destination.

It is possible to begin or end your charter elsewhere in Greece. However, you may have to consider the cost of repositioning as the fleet is mostly based out of Athens.

If you want to meet the yacht elsewhere – for example, Santorini, Mykonos –  you can expect to pay a hefty repositioning fee. It’s generally more economical to begin your Greek yacht charter in Athens and spend the day cruising to your desired start point, enjoying your yacht to the fullest, and soaking up the scenery as you travel underway.

Where to Find a Yacht Slip in Greece

Exploring secluded coves - luxury yacht charter vacation

Around the main yachting hubs of Greece, you’ll find plenty of marinas that cater to a variety of yachts of different sizes. However, be aware that Greece doesn’t have as many big marinas as destinations such as the South of France or Italy , and demand for slips can be very high in peak season.

  • Zea Marina:  located in Piraeus, Athens, which is the largest seaport in Greece and one of the largest harbors in all of Europe. It's a hive of activity, offering 670 slips up to 150m.
  • Athens Marina : revered marina, accommodating 130 slips measuring up to 130m. Provides plenty of amenities on land, including a helipad service.
  • Flisvos Marina: award-winning and perfect for starting and ending a charter. Located 6km from Athens city center, with a 303 slip capacity (up to 70m). Well-equipped facilities and high-end restaurants at your disposal when you dock here.
  • Kos Marina: close to the enchanting island's old harbor, this marina has a capacity for up to 250 slips with a maximum length of 80m. Provides an excellent array of facilities and dining options.
  • Rhodes Marina:  world-class marina complete with a stunning backdrop. Can accommodate a staggering 382 yachts with a maximum length of 120m.

Where to End a Greece Yacht Charter

Beginning or ending your yacht charter in Athens, one of the most exciting cities in the world, is a popular choice. Be sure to explore this historic destination in all its glory before you leave.

How to Book Your Yacht Charter in Greece

Planning your yacht charter with a Broker

Greece is one of the most popular charter destinations in the Mediterranean. Therefore, advanced booking (three to six months ahead) is absolutely essential in order to secure your dream yacht on your preferred dates in the perfect destination.

When it comes to Greece yacht rentals, many charterers are repeat clients; meaning they’ve already booked the yacht once, fallen in love with the yacht and its crew, and chosen to return again to explore a new destination. This means that competition for yachts is fierce and it’s even more crucial to kickstart the booking process early.

Don’t forget that your choice of yachts in Greece is comparatively smaller than Italy or the South of France since all yachts beginning or ending a charter yacht in Greece must have a Greek charter license.

That said, it is possible for a foreign-flagged yacht to charter in Greece so long as the charter begins and ends in international waters, such as Italy and Albania for yacht charters around the Ionian Islands or Turkey for charters around the Aegean islands.

Greece Yacht Charter Q&A

Most itineraries for yachts around Greece begin in Athens because around 90% of the charter fleet in Greece has a homeport in Athens. Therefore, the yachts are usually based in the country’s capital, and you will most likely have to pay a repositioning fee if you’d like to begin elsewhere in Greece.

A Greek yacht charter license is a special permit that allows yachts to begin and end a yacht charter in Greece. Not all yachts hold a Greek charter license, so you will need to speak to your charter broker for more information about starting and finishing a charter in Greek waters.

You could start a yacht charter in Mykonos, but you will most likely have to pay a hefty repositioning fee as most yachts have their homeport in Athens. To get the most out of your yacht charter, it’s usually best to begin in Athens and spend the night underway to reach Mykonos.

The most popular destinations for sailing vacations in Greece are the Ionian Islands. However, great sailing conditions exist across the country, and other popular hotspots include the Dodecanese Islands, the Sporades Islands and the Saronic Islands.

The standard Value Added Tax (VAT) is 24%, and it is calculated based on the value of the yacht. The VAT can be reduced in certain circumstances; read our guide above.

The Cyclades Islands of Santorini, Mykonos, Paros and Naxos are great for exploring on a luxury yacht charter during summer. The best times to visit are between June and September when you can expect long days and warm sea temperatures. The beach clubs of Mykonos will be in full swing, and the island of Santorini will be alive with activity.

Athens

Yacht Charter Athens

Ancient, edgy Athens is a city well worth visiting. A major base for chartering a boat in Greece, it’s an exciting combination of ancient and avant guard. The iconic Acropolis dominates the city; a visible reminder of Ancient Greek heritage.  The world-class Acropolis museum is a must and one for the best places to watch the sunset. Summer nights in open-air  bars and restaurants ,the delightful Greek cuisine, the stark sunshine and shimmering seas is a heady combination and a promising beginning to a sailing holiday in the Aegean.

Museums and ancient sites are dotted all over the city if you would like to catch up on some history. Glamourous city beaches with an exciting after-dark scene await those looking for some fun.

Top-class, full-service marinas in the area accomodate everything from a simple sailboat to a megayacht motorboat providing safe, comfortable bases to start your sailing adventure from. Centrally located, the islands of the ArgoSaronic Gulf, the Cyclades and even the Dodecanses are accessible from here depending how much time you have.

Athens International airport is well connected to the rest of the world, especially during the summer months. Major bus and train stations are situated downtown and are connected to all the major cities and towns of Greece . The nearby ports of Pireaus and Lavros are connected by ferry to the Greek islands and Italy, and is a big and busy harbour.

Sailing Conditions

Sailing from an Athens charter base has many advantages. Being protected by the Attica peninsula and the Peloponnese, the winds on the Saronic routes are friendly and recommended for easy sailing. The proximity of these islands from Athens makes them ideal for a shorter boat charter. Although it gets very busy in high season, the area is well connected and makes picking up your boat charter easy.

Further south, the wind is stronger, offering more challenging sailing around the Cyclades. There are plenty of islands to explore - quiet and relaxed to busy and lively. Alternatively, a skippered or crewed charter with an experienced local skipper is recommended.

What To Do Outside Athens, Greece

A thens, Greece has much more to offer than just the Parthenon. While you can spend two full days touring downtown Athens , there are many more places to visit within greater Athens during a longer trip.

Athens is the only capital in Europe where tourists can come and swim at nice clean beaches. It might not sound important, but it is perfect for the warmer summer months.

What to do and see outside Athens:

A dozen kilometers Southwest of downtown Athens is the city of Pireas, although it is still within the same urban area. Pireas holds the main ports of the city, as the largest passenger port in Europe. To get to Pireas you pass by many of the 2004 Olympic stadiums.

Mikrolimano

The little port of Mikrolimano is the best place to enjoy fresh fish. There are many restaurants and cafes right at the edge of the water. From here you get a nice view of the Southern part of the city and its beaches.

If you are looking for luxury on the sea, there is Business marina where you can rent yourself a very fancy yacht.

Further down along at the end of the peninsula is the Piraiki neighborhood. Here are many of the cheaper fish restaurants, as well as some less busy places to jump in the water. It is a bit more difficult to get to, but completely worth it.

Zea Marina is a great little area to walk around, enjoy the view and grab a bite to eat. This circular inlet is the old port of historic Athens. It is now home to great number of shops inside the marina and endless lovely yachts that we could never afford.

Voula Beach

Source: (WT-en) Elgaard at English Wikivoyage

If you visit Athens in the summer, you must spend some time at its nearby beaches. There are several beaches closer to Athens, but Voula Beach is the best one to relax and plunge in the water. There are plenty of places to grab a drink and catch some rays.

Transportation:

The best way to get around the greater Athens area is with a tour, especially if you want a guide of information as you visit each place. We used Greece Athens Tours , who not only gave us a tour of downtown Athens, but took us to these more hidden spots as well. If you want to get everything done in one swoop and not have to worry, this tour is for you.

The option that gives you the most freedom and flexibility is using a taxi, and you can stay in each place as long as you want. However, this is the most expensive way to get around. It can cost upwards of €20 each way from downtown to the coast.

The cheapest way to get to the water is by train. Yet, there are several downsides to public transportation in Athens. The first is time, it takes well over an hour to get someplace that only takes 15 minutes via car. Also, during the summer the tram gets uncomfortably warm from the sun.

The last issue is that the tram obviously does not go everywhere. Even if it does, it might take several transfers to get to your final destination.
