Completing the campaign on legendary will automatically unlock all lower difficulties.

Make sure you play the LASO playlist. Don't just start each mission with all skulls on. Otherwise you won't get the achievement! You can get to the playlist as shown below. MCC Main Menu > Campaign > Halo: Reach > Playlists > LASO Campaign Tips: - Always try and get the allied AI to tank the enemies allowing you to perform an easy backstab. - Play it slow in certain areas, don't feel pressured to rush through an area. - Backstab Elites or Plasma Pistol them until shield drops and go for a headshot. - Needle Brutes and the rest you can usually headshot with a DMR. - Shooting a charged Plasma Pistol directly to the ground will deal damage to you allowing you to ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎pick up health packs to get your shield back. - Enemies aim for your body so leaving only your head visible allows you to shoot while in cover ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎allowing the cover to tank the enemy's bullets.

halo wraith hunter

You can get both of these achievements together. This was the easiest method I found and worked for me. However, if you are really struggling try doing the CO-OP Method with the Wraith . Good Luck with this one.

Make sure you play the LASO playlist. Don't just start each mission with all skulls on. Otherwise you won't get the achievement! You can get to the playlist as shown below. MCC Main Menu > Campaign > Halo: CE Anniversary > Playlists > LASO Campaign Tips: - Be aware of the huge explosion range and dead grunts. Always try and keep your distance. - Play it slow in certain areas, don't feel pressured to rush through an area. - Backstab Elites or hope the grunts explosions drop the shields and go for a headshot. - Try and headshot the grunts so they blow up the rest of the enemies. - Enemies aim for your body so leaving only your head visible allows you to shoot while in cover ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎allowing the cover to tank the enemy's bullets. - Always pickup overshield's or active camo to get through areas much easier. - Watch out for marines throwing "suicide grenades". Believe me it's a pain. - Try and use allied AI to get the attention of the enemy allowing you to run through certain areas. - Learn how to do the Infinite Ammo glitch . Helps a lot on the harder missions. (Double tap r to reload and swap weapons on the floor, leave it for a few seconds and if you pick it back up it will have a full clip without using any ammo.)

halo wraith hunter

These two achievements can be done together and I'd recommend doing it on a separate run

halo wraith hunter

You can get No-Fly Zone in a normal play through but if you missed it you can do these both together to save some time.

halo wraith hunter

These two can be done right next to each other.

halo wraith hunter

If you are having trouble with the methods in the video above try the warthog method . However, I'd recommend learning the jump as it will help you get the hang of other grenade jumps if you are going for all the achievements.

halo wraith hunter

I'd do both of these achievements in separate runs.

halo wraith hunter

You can do these both together but I would suggest doing them separately as it's extremely hard just doing one of them.

halo wraith hunter

Both of these can be found in the same room almost right next to each other.

halo wraith hunter

If you happen to be doing this LASO on CO-OP there is a despawn bug that you can use to despawn all the enemies in the Engine Room. Allowing you to destroy the 4 reactors without getting attacked. You don't need to watch the whole video just the first few minutes to figure out where you stand.

halo wraith hunter

Make sure you play the LASO playlist. Don't just start each mission with all skulls on. Otherwise you won't get the achievement! You can get to the playlist as shown below. MCC Main Menu > Campaign > Halo: 2 Anniversary > Playlists > LASO Campaign Tips: - Play it slow in certain areas, don't feel pressured to rush through an area. - Backstab Elites when possible. - Try and headshot the grunts. - Enemies aim for your body so leaving only your head visible allows you to shoot while in cover ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎allowing the cover to tank the enemy's bullets. - Utilities The Arbitors invisibility. It makes it easier to get through areas. - Play on Classic Graphics. It makes it easier to see all the invisible enemies. - Listen out for "angry" noises from enemies. It shows that they have found you but also leaves them open for backstabs. - Try and use allied AI to get the attention of the enemy allowing you to run through certain areas. - Mastery of the "Sword Flying" technique can help a lot. With both LASO and Speed Running. You can attempt this manually or attempt to set up a macro to automatically do it.

halo wraith hunter

I found the banshee method a lot easier. When getting it through the final door in the tunnel make sure the banshee is opposite to the door. Should give it a straight line to follow you in. See this part of the video for what I mean . If you are struggling with the banshee trick try the other methods to these achievements linked below. I'd recommend both of these achievements be done in a separate run. GOOOAAAAALLLL!: Method 2 Scarab Lord: Method 2

halo wraith hunter

These can both be achieved at the same time.

halo wraith hunter

Both of these can be found in the same room.

halo wraith hunter

Both of these can basically be found right next to each other. If you are struggling to make the jump normally try using the Sputnik skull to make it easier.

halo wraith hunter

If you are struggling to get to either of these with a grenade jump turn the sputnik skull on. It should make the jump a lot easier to do.

halo wraith hunter

Both can be found in the same location.

halo wraith hunter

Both can be found pretty much right next to each other. If you miss the Skull just go back to last checkpoint and try again.

halo wraith hunter

I'd recommend taking the spectre rather than the banshee. This allows you to get both of the achievements at the same time by driving it around the back. Go for the skull first then the toy. Go to last checkpoint if you mess it up and the spectre falls down the hill. Remember to park the spectre at the start of the level as shown in the video.

Seasonal Sign Dates: January 1 - "Baby Shark Petting" July 7 - "Are you finding Ling-Ling's head?" October 31 - "Danger, Carnage Zone" December 25 - "Danger, This Soffish, DO NOT EAT!" On one of these days, in your local timezone, you will need to load a custom game in Halo 2 Classic on Zanzibar, and then go to the beach and look at the sign next to water. On the dates listed above, the sign will be unique and the achievement will unlock. I'd add one of these dates to your calendar.

halo wraith hunter

I'd do the above 7 together on the map Bloodline.

halo wraith hunter

I'd do the above 5 on Lockdown. Easier and quicker.

halo wraith hunter

Both of these 2 above can be done at the exact same time.
I'd recommend trying to get all of these achievements first in case there aren't any players. Everything in this section has to be done in matchmaking.

halo wraith hunter

I'd just play some Slayer for these 2. Should get it quickly.

halo wraith hunter

These 2 can be done normally in 4v4 but it will take a long time. I'd suggest doing what I did and get 1 or 3 friends to queue for 1v1 or 2v2 slayer. (VPN to a lower player count country can help you get matched against each other. Australia worked for me.) Aim for the map Lockdown and take turns getting the coils and ice. You can get splatters from the ice if the person getting killed gets hit directly in the head while looking at the ice. This way you get a splatter and environmental kill at the same time. Might take a few attempts to figure out the right spot and positioning but once you figure it out you will get them pretty consistently. Focus the ice whenever it is up as you can use the coils for the environmental's but not the splatters. If you don't get lockdown (which happens a lot) just go for other achievements on the other maps like backstabs or grenade kills, whatever you need. If you need people for this achievement try putting a post in the Steam Discussions. A few people will probably be looking to do something similar. Good Luck!

halo wraith hunter

Make sure you play the LASO playlist. Don't just start each mission with all skulls on. Otherwise you won't get the achievement! You can get to the playlist as shown below. MCC Main Menu > Campaign > Halo 3 > Playlists > LASO Campaign - Range shoot brutes. They have a short line of site so if you can sit far enough back they won't detect you while you charge a plasma pistol and use a BR or Carbine to get a headshot. Meaning they won't dodge your first attack. - Similar to the range shooting method you can try pop shooting when in short distance. Charge a plasma pistol and quickly peak and shoot and get back in cover. They won't detect you meaning they won't dodge the shot. - Shielded Jackals sometimes after charging the plasma pistol to long cause it to dissipate and renders the weapon unusable. Allowing you to easily walk up and melee jackals for a free shield. - If a brute starts berserking aim to kill it immediately. Easiest methods are plasma, spike or fire bomb grenades. Alternatively go for headshots when possible. - Carbine and Beam rifles are much better when fighting brutes. It takes less shots to drop there armour. - Try and use some speed run tactics if you can in certain areas. It might allow you to get through without fighting anyone. - Try and use allied AI to get the attention of the enemy allowing you to run through certain areas. - Finally go for backstabs when ever you can. It will help and save ammo.

halo wraith hunter

I'd do both of these in separate runs.

halo wraith hunter

Both can be done right at the start of the level.

halo wraith hunter

This can be done on any level and might trigger randomly. IWHBYD just makes it more likely and that spot seems to be one of the more consistent places to get it.

halo wraith hunter

Both can be found in the same room.

halo wraith hunter

All 4 can be found at the start of the level basically right next to each other.

November 11th (Veteran's Day): Kilroy Was Here December 25th (Christmas): A Christmas light with an “X” marked through it On one of these days, in your local timezone, you will need to load a custom game in Halo 3 on Valhalla, and then go to the giant metal wall/structure in the middle and side of the map. Then head to the graffiti and look at it. On the dates listed above, the sign will be unique and the achievement will unlock. I'd add one of these dates to your calendar.

halo wraith hunter

Both can be done at the same time just change the game mode as you switch maps. You must do the skulls below in Forge, not custom games!

halo wraith hunter

Make sure you play the LASO playlist. Don't just start each mission with all skulls on. Otherwise you won't get the achievement! You can get to the playlist as shown below. MCC Main Menu > Campaign > Halo 3: ODST > Playlists > LASO Campaign (You can do either LASO but I'd do the shorter one so it isn't as hard.) - Range shoot brutes. They have a short line of site so if you can sit far enough back they won't detect you while you charge a plasma pistol and use a BR or Carbine to get a headshot. Meaning they won't dodge your first attack. - Similar to the range shooting method you can try pop shooting when in short distance. It takes less shots to drop there armour. - Try and use some speed run tactics if you can in certain areas. It might allow you to get through without fighting anyone. - Try and use allied AI to get the attention of the enemy allowing you to run through certain areas. - Give other ODST's (Invincible Characters/Main Characters) Heavy Weapons like Fuel Rods, Spartan Lasers or Rockets. This will allow them to tank the damage while also being able to kill hard enemies for you. - Finally go for backstabs when ever you can. It will help and save ammo and get your health back. Remember Plasma Pistol and the normal pistol are your best friend.

halo wraith hunter

All 4 of these can be done together. However, if you are struggling do the top 2 on Heroic and the bottom 2 on Legendary.

halo wraith hunter

I'd recommend just doing these 2 or the Audio Logs to make it easier to keep track. Then do the other option in a separate run. However, you can do them all at the same time if you wanted. Find below the best route to get all the Audio Logs as well as a few tips. Notes: - Select "Mombasa Streets - Rally Point 4" on Easy to have an open map to collect these. - These can be picked up in any order, and the achievements will unlock in order. - Audio Log 30 requires the first 29 audio logs. - Audio Log 30 is located on a different mission. - Find a mongoose in the weapon's caches to travel more quickly. - Using VISR will highlight the audio logs in yellow. - If you do this solo, you can quit to the main menu and select Data Hive. If you do this co-op you must complete kikowani station and then continue to data hive. audio log progress is not saved in co-op!

halo wraith hunter

I'd recommend doing "Two Places, Same Time" in a separate run to make it easier.

halo wraith hunter

Both can be done at the same time.

halo wraith hunter

Make sure you play the LASO playlist. Don't just start each mission with all skulls on. Otherwise you won't get the achievement! You can get to the playlist as shown below. MCC Main Menu > Campaign > Halo 4 > Playlists > LASO Campaign - Play it slow in certain areas, don't feel pressured to rush through an area. - Backstab Elites when possible. - Try and headshot the grunts or backstab if they are running. - Enemies aim for your body so leaving only your head visible allows you to shoot while in cover ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎allowing the cover to tank the enemy's bullets. - Similar to the range shooting method you can try pop shooting when in short distance. Charge a plasma pistol and quickly peak and shoot and get back in cover. - Try and use some speed run tactics if you can in certain areas. It might allow you to get through without fighting anyone. - Try and use allied AI to get the attention of the enemy allowing you to run through certain areas. - Don't hold a plasma pistol when charged as it depletes it. Only charge and shoot to save ammo. - Knights tend to get stuck in a grenade throwing animation. Try and zigzag your way closer to them and when you think it's right sprint behind them and melee them. - Aim to kill Watchers before killing any knights are they will just respawn them. - Use the Carbine to shoot elites shields down from a distance. Most UNSC weapons take to much ammo. As a side note it takes 2 Plasma Pistol charges to drop an elites shields on this Halo so you are better off staying far away with a carbine or going for a melee kill. - Finally go for backstabs when ever you can. It will help and save ammo.

halo wraith hunter

Both can be found in the same area. "You're No Chips" sometimes doesn't work. You need a specific dialogue to happen. Just go back to last checkpoint if it didn't pop or rally point bravo.

halo wraith hunter

Completing the episodes on legendary will automatically unlock all lower difficulties.

halo wraith hunter

You are allowed to die on this just finish the mission and it should pop.

halo wraith hunter

Both of these can be at the same time.

halo wraith hunter

Completing a mission on legendary will automatically unlock all lower difficulties.

halo wraith hunter

Completing all mission's on legendary will automatically unlock all lower difficulties.

halo wraith hunter

You will get these passively while you do all the other achievements in the campaign's but if you want to farm them specifically just click on any of the achievements. Good Luck!

halo wraith hunter

You will unlock most of these passively by doing all the other achievements but if you still need them I would focus on winning multiplayer games while there is still a player base.

halo wraith hunter

You don't need to worry about these as you can do it in customs solo. (Start Slayer for example solo and just end the game...repeat)

halo wraith hunter

Just focus on winning the matches above and you will get some of these by just playing the game. Thought feel free to go for specific ones when ever you want.

halo wraith hunter

You will passively unlock most of these by doing the campaign and other achievements. Otherwise you can grind these on firefight if needed or follow each individual guide.

Mgalekgolo [3] ( Ophis congregatio , meaning "serpent union"), more commonly known as Hunters , are a unique gestalt of smaller creatures known as Lekgolo , which are orange, worm-like creatures. Lekgolo were known to group together and form a Mgalekgolo for protection during combat, due to the form's increased strength at the cost of maneuverability. When grouped together, the intelligence of the Mgalekgolo colony is increased with every additional Lekgolo.

History [ ]

When the Covenant discovered the Mgalekgolo homeworld of Te , they intended on mining its riches, but faced heavy resistance from the Mgalekgolo. Their physiology gave them a tremendous and unexpected advantage in combat, halting the Covenant's advance and killing an Arbiter . The Covenant were further infuriated by the Lekgolo's destruction of Forerunner artifacts during the Mgalekgolo's routine feedings. [4] In ground combat, they were mostly victorious even against Sangheili . The Covenant was forced to rely on orbital bombardment , against which the Mgalekgolo had little defense. To save themselves from extinction, they agreed to join the Covenant. This later came to be known as the Taming of the Lekgolo .

Terms for their induction into the Covenant were eventually met despite communication difficulties. In their agreement to join with the Covenant, the Lekgolo worms were consigned to investigate the Forerunner dreadnought that resided in High Charity , and help to uncover its inner workings. Their price for this trade was access to space-travel technologies and exploration of the Covenant space lanes. The Mgalekgolo also received their armor and assault cannons from the Sangheili.

During and after the Great Schism , there was a division within the species. Some allied with the Covenant Separatists and others remained with the Covenant Loyalists .

Description [ ]

Mgalekgolo are the strongest and the most resilient species within the Covenant's army. [5] A typical Mgalekgolo usually stands between 3.66 metres (12.0 ft) and 3.96 metres (13.0 ft) tall, but crouches to between 2.44 metres (8.0 ft) and 2.59 metres (8.5 ft) when in its combat state to protect its unarmored stomach and neck. A Mgalekgolo can become larger than even a standard Covenant Wraith.

Mgalekgolos fight primarily by using the heavy assault cannons integrated directly into their armor on one arm. On the other arm, they carry an enormous and nearly impervious two-part metal shield that is made from the same material that forms Covenant warship hulls and weighs approximately two tons. This shield protects them from almost every form of plasma-based or ballistic weaponry available to Covenant and human infantry and is a powerful melee tool capable of crushing anything in its path and allowing the Mgalekgolo to sweep away most enemies in close combat. Despite their immense mass, the Mgalekgolo are surprisingly nimble and can gain a surprising burst of speed when they move in for a melee kill.

Scarab Lekgolo

Lekgolo worms inside a Scarab shell.

Mgalekgolo are composed of small, orange, worm-like beings called Lekgolo that form a single collective consciousness and act as one, similar to the Flood . Lekgolo are unintelligent at the most basic level, but can form complex thoughts and emerge as a conscious individual when they combine into larger masses. [6] Mgalekgolo are capable of manifesting in several different iterations according to what goal they are striving to achieve and the amount of Lekgolo worms that are present. The Mgalekgolo is the most common form seen in combat, but is actually one of the more rare forms in the Lekgolo society.

Because they do not possess a central nervous system, Lekgolo are one of the few species in the Covenant that cannot be assimilated by the Flood.  They can however, be infected individually via inhalation of Flood spores.

Mgalekgolo do not use vocal chords to speak, but instead vibrate their bodies to make a low rumble to produce speech. They are capable of mimicking the language of other species, forming words and sentences that are "felt rather than heard." [6] [7] Their quiet nature among other races of the Covenant is possibly a result of difficulty speaking with other Covenant races. The known names of some Mgalekgolo seem to imply that they use very simple vowels and only a few consonants.

When a single Mgalekgolo colony becomes too big, the colony will divide in half to create two independent Mgalekgolo colonies. These colonies will share an extremely close and mysterious bond, referred to only as being "bond brothers" or "mates." [8] Mgalekgolo that have split into "bond brothers" are recognized by spiked appendages that rise from their shoulders. [4] The Covenant usually drop bonded Mgalekgolo into combat together because if one of the bonded colonies is killed, the other will go into a frenzied berserk.

Culture [ ]

Lekgolo follow their own cultural traditions rather than the homogenized religion of the wider Covenant. [9] They never associate or communicate with the other races in the Covenant Empire and are dismissive, contemptuous, and arrogant towards them. Mgalekgolo also have no qualms about committing friendly fire against races they consider "lesser," such as Unggoy and Kig-Yar . However, Sangheili are an exception, as the Mgalekgolo respect their adeptness in combat.

Their culture is more refined than one would presume from their hulking appearance: they are known to tear opponents apart with their bare hands while in a blood frenzy and then suddenly pause to recite war poetry. [10] Religious beliefs vary, but they believe in a type of "afterlife." [3] [8] Some also meditate in their spare time or before battle. [10]

Mgalekgolo have three names: a personal name, a bond name, and a line name. The personal name is given at their "birth." The line name is the personal name of the most successful Mgalekgolo in his ancestry. The bond name, or their middle name, is taken between bonded pairs that have split into two.

Two examples of some Hunter names are Igido Nosa Hurru and Ogada Nosa Fasu . From the few Hunter names that have appeared in the novels, it seems that the given name has three syllables, but the bond name and line name only have two syllables. However, it is not known why the line name is not three syllables considering that the line name would be an ancestor's three-syllable personal name.

Military Ranking [ ]

ODST TayariPlaza06

Buck fighting a Golden Hunter on Tayari Plaza .

Unlike most Covenant forces, Mgalekgolo do not seem to possess a visible rank and are almost always seen wearing exactly the same blue armor. The only exception are the gold-armored Mgalekgolo found in Halo 3: ODST . Whether there is any other significance to this is unknown.

They are sometimes deployed independently of other Covenant troops, indicating a level of independence and responsibility granted to them. Some may have a high enough rank to be trusted by themselves. In Halo: The Fall of Reach , Mgalekgolo guard the crystal in Côte d'Azur . In Halo: Reach , two Mgalekgolo lead a group of Skirmisher Champions in the level The Pillar of Autumn . During the Battle of Onyx , some Mgalekgolos apparently had command of lower-ranking Sangheili. Exact hierarchy is unknown.

  • In Tagalog, "Mga" means "the" in plural use. Mgalekgolo in English would be "the Lekgolos."
  • Ophis congregatio means "the congregation of Ophis." Ophis is Οφις in Greek and means "Serpent."
  • Mgalekgolo won't shoot other Mgalekgolo if the player is standing on one's head, but other infantry will.
  • It is possible that the worms may form a skin-like membrane on the outside of their colony for protection against more casual damage, and in Halo 3 , a metal column can be seen after the back armor plating has been detached which perhaps forms an artificial "spine" for vertical support.
  • At first, Mgalekgolo were meant to comprise the whole of Heretic forces on the Gas Mine . [11]
  • Spartan-II William-043 killed a Hunter by ripping a few Lekgolo worms from its body. This means that a Hunter can be killed if too many of its worms are displaced.
  • The Hunter resembles the enemy of the same name from Bungie's older series Marathon , except that Marathon ' s Hunter had a shoulder-mounted weapon rather than an arm-mounted weapon.
  • The spikes on the Hunter's back are sensory nodes [12] and are as sharp as razors. [13]
  • In the Halo Legends episode The Duel , the Mgalekgolo are shown to be at least 50 feet tall. This was explained by Frank O'Connor saying that a Hunter's appearance changes due to the gravity and environment.
  • No Mgalekgolo are ever seen supporting John-117 during the events of Halo 3 . This is because in the making of Halo 3 , Bungie did not want to confuse players by having them with both the Separatists and the Loyalists, so they were only shown as Loyalists.
  • In Halo: Combat Evolved , Mgalekgolo are not harmed by Fuel Rod Guns from other Mgalekgolo.
  • In Halo: Combat Evolved , a single shot from a pistol or sniper rifle in the exposed orange area will kill a Hunter.
  • In Halo 2 , it is impossible to kill or even damage a Hunter with a melee attack.
  • From Halo 3 onward, whenever a Hunter spots any kind of grenade near it, it will often curl up in a defensive position until the grenade detonates or swiftly jump to the side a few meters away from the grenade before it explodes near them.
  • In Halo Wars , a Hunter can deflect many projectiles that would kill them in Halo 3 , like a Wraith Mortar or a Scorpion main cannon shot.
  • In Halo: Reach , Mgalekgolo' back spikes will quiver and gradually fall off as they take damage.
  • In Halo: Reach , Mgalekgolo and Drones are the only creatures that cannot be assassinated .
  • In Halo: Reach , there is a Forerunner "I" on the right shoulder.
  • In a Halo: Reach custom Firefight match, if a player sets Damage to 300% and hits a Hunter directly with a shot from a Fuel Rod Gun , the Hunter will drop its shield on the ground. Even after the shield is dropped, Mgalekgolo will still try to block it with a shield that they are no longer holding.
  • In Halo: Reach and Halo 4 , Mgalekgolo do not berserk if their partner is killed.
  • Halo: Spartan Assault is the first Halo game to not feature Mgalekgolo. However, one is displayed on the game's cover.
  • A Mgalekgolo and an Unggoy are featured in the DVD surround sound test in the Halo 2 and Halo 3 bonus DVDs. The Hunter produces a low rumbling sound and a belch as a subwoofer test.
  • The number of syllables in a Mgalekgolo's name may be a 7 reference , as 3 + 2 + 2 = 7.
  • The pre-Covenant Mgalekgolo created the gestalts (the common form of Hunter) by forming around rocks in their environments to make a semi-humanoid shape. [14]
  • In the original Halo 2 , when you play as the Arbiter and have Hunter allies, you cannot have more than 2 Hunters in a room at the same time. If you force a second pair of Hunters into a room that already has one pair, the first pair will die. This is mainly seen in the final mission, The Great Journey.

Overview [ edit ]

Design details [ edit ].

halo wraith hunter

The Zurdo -pattern Wraith is the primary armored ground vehicle used by the Covenant. [8] The Covenant deploys Wraiths in tactical ground engagements, where they serve in both anti-infantry and anti-armor roles. The Wraith's firepower also makes it ideal for destroying structures. [7]

Like all Covenant ground vehicles, the Wraith is sleek, bulbous and more reminiscent of an aircraft than a traditional ground vehicle. The Wraith is divided into four main sections: chassis, fins, rudders, and plasma mortar. The chassis houses the cockpit, which includes movement, targeting and firing controls. Holographic control surfaces and displays show the pilot a 360-degree view outside the Wraith. [9] Underneath the cockpit is a boosted gravity propulsion drive , [10] which propels the Wraith and keeps it suspended a short distance above the ground. The Wraith's engine vents excess heat and plasma through an exhaust port at the rear of the vehicle; this port is one of the more vulnerable spots on the Wraith. The wide, sweeping fins at the front of the vehicle stabilize the vehicle on uneven terrain, as well as provide extra thrust during a boost. [10] At the rear of the Wraith are two rudders, which control the turning of the vehicle using independent propulsion drives. The fourth major component is the Wraith's main weapon, a heavy plasma mortar, which rests above and behind the cockpit and can be retracted within the main body. The entirety of the Wraith is covered by nearly two feet of armor plating, which is composed of a polymer that is still poorly understood by human physicists. [4]

Armaments [ edit ]

The main weapon of the Wraith is its 35cm heavy plasma mortar . [3] The Wraith's mortar is attached to a fixed mounting, meaning that a Wraith must be facing its target in order to hit it. [4] The plasma mortar works by creating a magnetically encapsulated blob of superheated plasma and firing it at a relatively low velocity. Once fired, the bolt is magnetically guided in a ballistic trajectory until it strikes the ground or target. When the bolt hits, the magnetic bubble collapses and the plasma rapidly expands from its compressed state, creating a superheated explosion that will vaporize everything within twenty meters of impact. [11] Titanium battleplate, concrete, or flesh is instantly obliterated by the blast. Anything just outside of the kill zone is at risk of injury or death — after the initial impact, the plasma begins to cool and thermal expansion takes over, creating a wave of fire traveling outward that can travel away from the initial blast zone. Infantry within range can sustain burns and heat trauma. The explosion also generates a large amount of concussive force, which can splinter bones and destroy vital organs. [12] Flammable materials are especially at risk of igniting due to the intense heat release and can cause further damage. Once the heat from the explosion dissipates, the blast zone will have been converted into a glass-smooth surface - much like the swaths of vitrified soil created by " glassing ".

The Wraith is also equipped with an anti-infantry T-26 DEWE light plasma cannon . [3] This turret is able to burn through armor and flesh, with predictably gruesome results. Against infantry, the cannon's plasma causes severe fourth-degree burns.

All Zurdo -pattern Wraiths made after 2549 featured a ring mount for the light plasma cannon, [3] allowing an additional crew member on the Wraith. [13] [14]

Advantages [ edit ]

With the exception of the Scarab , the Wraith is the Covenant's most destructive mobile armor. Its huge bulk is well shielded from small arms fire, and it is resistant to medium explosive weapons. Its ability to be deployed with the aid of dropships makes insertions into the battlefield fairly easy. Its plasma mortar can easily decimate infantry and vehicles alike, and its destructive powers are so well known to UNSC forces that the mere sight of one on the battlefield can induce psychological effects. [11] One of the benefits is the mortar function due to the trajectory that can suppress any incoming enemy from behind the wall, or those who are stationed at the rooftop that can't be reached by a Scorpion Tank's trajectory. While it's not suitable for head to head battle, it is most suitable to conduct a suppression fire mainly against enemy infantry.

Disadvantages [ edit ]

The Wraith's main disadvantage is its slow speed, due to the vehicle's massive weight. While the boost drive can propel the vehicle to moderately high speeds, the maneuverability of the vehicle is compromised — turning becomes difficult during a boost, and the momentum that is built from it makes it possible for the vehicle to inadvertently plow through friendly forces, crash into and get lodged between stationary objects, or overshoot its mark and skate off of a cliff or into a body of water. The Wraith is also poorly suited for scaling inclines.

Like most tanks, the Wraith has a "dead area", a zone in which the plasma mortar cannot fire without risking damage to itself. [15] The slow speed and cumbersome nature of the Wraith makes it prone to boarding action — while the front of the tank is harder to board because of the plasma turret(s), the rear is highly susceptible to boarding. A small rotating cylinder exhaust port in the back is a vulnerable spot that, if hit with a medium explosive device or anti-materiél weapons fire, can damage the tank severely. The exposed gunner operating the Type-52 DESW is also an easy target for marksman and sniper fire.

Since its weaponry is designed to be used against non-mobile or low-mobility targets, and its weight and wide profile prevent it from maneuvering with any deal of speed and accuracy, the Wraith is a very soft target for high mobility vehicles, such as a Warthog or a Ghost , and is at a high risk of destruction against a vehicle with a much more accurate heavy weapon (such as the Scorpion with its direct-firing 90mm cannon).

The Plasma Mortar is also ill-suited for long range combat, as it moves so slowly that even units with low mobility-such as the Scorpion tank-can dodge it.

Operational history [ edit ]

Human-covenant war [ edit ].

The Wraith has been in service to the Covenant for centuries, [16] and has served in countless engagements during the Human-Covenant War . After the retaking of Harvest in 2526 by Admiral Cole , the Covenant, attempting to scout and recover an artifact , deployed multiple Wraiths during the assault on Harvest.

Throughout the war the Covenant deployed Wraiths during ground campaigns against civilian and military targets. Wraiths would commonly target civilian evacuation transports still on the ground and platforms and structures leading to them, or would fire and kill large groups of civilians crowded together. In 2531 , during the first assault on the colony world Arcadia , multiple Wraiths were used in this situation to kill panicking civilians attempting to flee the Covenant invasion. The tanks assisted in destroying structures and platforms holding civilians waiting for evacuation. In addition, the tanks were used against UNSC military forces attempting to assist with evacuation efforts. [17] During the Battle of Trove , Wraiths were used by Covenant forces against not only the crew of the UNSC Spirit of Fire but also the Flood and Sentinels as well. [18]

As the war dragged on, ground campaigns conducted by the Covenant continued to employ the Wraith as their main heavy armored vehicle. During the assault on Algolis the Wraiths were called in to weaken military forces attempting to protect and destroy valuable data. The UNSC was able to hold off the Covenant just long enough and all ground forces were eventually destroyed with the detonation of a nuclear weapon attached to a prototype armor suit . [19]

As the war with humanity was reaching its apex, the Covenant began updating and building up their military campaign against humanity. After 2549 , all models of the Zurdo -pattern Wraith were equipped with a ring mount for a secondary gunner to operate the Wraith's plasma cannon. [13] [14] During the invasion of Sigma Octanus IV in July 2552 the Covenant deployed numerous tanks to take out strategic areas on the planet including military bases and civilian structures. [20] No sooner had that battle finished the Covenant launched a surprise assault on Reach , humanity's heavily fortified epicenter of military and economic power outside of Earth. Multiple divisions of Wraith tanks were employed to inflict mass casualties on civilian and military forces alike. Their campaign was successful destroying major military and civilian transports, structures and killing countless in the process. [21] [22]

During the opening of the Battle for Earth , the Solemn Penance managed to jump to the city of Mombasa . In the short but bloody campaign , the Covenant was able to land armor and troops into the city. Wraiths quickly moved in to cut off civilian evacuation by the city's rail system. [23] With civilians cut off, the Covenant began systematically destroying anything they could before the Prophet of Regret's ship jumped out of New Mombasa , destroying parts the city. [24] In the aftermath of Regret's retreat the full-scale invasion of Earth began, the Covenant laid waste to many parts of the planet and Wraiths were on the forefront of the ground assault. [25] [26]

With the uncovering of the Portal at Voi , the Covenant moved all their troops and armor to prevent the UNSC military from getting close to it. They deployed Wraiths to dispatch military forces attempting to break through their formation. [27] [28] After the opening of the portal and the arrival at Installation 00 the Covenant deployed all their assets in a last ditch effort to stop humanity and activate the remaining Halo installations . Wraiths were front and center in this operation, although ultimately, they lost to their human enemies. [29] [30]

Post-War [ edit ]

During the post-war period, Wraiths were popular during War Games matches aboard Anvil Station and the UNSC Infinity . Wraiths were used by Merg Vol's Covenant during the Battle of Draetheus V in 2554 . Many would be destroyed by both Spartans Sarah Palmer and Edward Davis with the help of the UNSC Marine Corps and UNSC Army . [31] [32] Four years after the end of the Human-Covenant War, Jul 'Mdama's Covenant continued to use the Wraith. Multiple Wraiths were used in the attack on the UNSC Infinity 's crash site. [33] Several were later used in defense of the Forerunner particle cannons . [34] Wraiths were also used during the Didact's Raid on Ivanoff Station in their attempt to secure the Composer . [35] The faction utilized a number of Wraiths during the Battle of Installation 03 . [36] Wraiths were deployed to many sites across the interior of Requiem during the combat within the planet six months later . [37] [38] [39] 'Mdama's faction would again use Wraiths during the conflict on Aktis IV . A rebel offshoot of 'Mdama's faction led by Sali 'Nyon also possessed at least one Wraith. [40] During Operation: ATHENA 'Mdama's forces used multiple Zurdo -pattern Wraiths in an attempt to stop a team of Spartan-IVs. [41]

By October 2558, the newer Kemu -pattern Wraith was becoming more commonplace within Jul 'Mdama's Covenant forces and the Swords of Sanghelios . [42]

Trivia [ edit ]

  • It is wrongly stated in the Halo 2 manual that the player can shoot the Wraith's plasma cannons while driving; these are usable only by NPCs in gameplay. The Halo 3 manual claims that the Wraith features the aforementioned cannons, though they appear only in Halo 2 .
  • An abstract depiction of the Marathon logo is embedded in the Wraith's cockpit in Halo: Reach . Bungie limited their use of Marathon references in the game due to intellectual property concerns, as opposed to the logo's frequent appearances in the original trilogy.
  • In Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary , the Wraith's model was carried over from Halo: Reach with no changes. As such the T-52 plasma cannon is still mounted on top, though it is not usable. Conversely, the Scorpion tank's independently mounted machine gun was removed entirely.
  • It is possible, though difficult, to hijack a Wraith by hopping in the mounted turret while an enemy is still inside of it, while not harming the Wraith. In Halo Reach and Halo 4 , in Campaign, Firefight or Spartan Ops , respectively, if the player is able to get in the turret while an enemy NPC driver is still in, the driver will hop out and usually start shooting at the player, after which the player can dispatch the enemy with the turret and claim the Wraith, possibly with it being undamaged.
  • Since Halo 4 , if the player presses the melee button while boosting, the Wraith will perform a super glide, in which the vehicle lifts its nose to pass over obstacles, while also making splatters a little bit easier.
