We’re at CES 2020 and we got some hands-on time with HP ’s latest Spectre x360 15, and boy is it gorgeous. From the trimmed down bezels to the beefed up graphics, the Spectre x360 15 might be the best laptop to beat in 2020.

HP plans on launching the Spectre x360 15 sometime in April 2020 and is slated to start at $1,599.

HP Spectre x360 15 (2020) design

The Spectre x360 retains the same luxurious design, with its stunning Dark Ash Silver hood comboed with its mesmerizing copper luxe accents. It still sports the same sleek diamond cut edges, but now the footprint is smaller than ever.

Opening it up revealed a shorter deck with incredibly thin bezels on the display, but the keyboard remained intact, remaining as big as it was before. The Spectre x360 is 13% smaller than the previous model, and now it boasts a 90% screen-to-body ratio.

This might just be one of the best looking consumer laptops to date.

HP Spectre x360 15 (2020) ports

This baby is packed with the same ports as before, stringing along a power jack, an HDMI port, a headphone jack, two Thunderbolt 3 ports, one USB Type-A port, a privacy camera kill switch and a microSD card slot. I still desperately want an extra USB Type-A port, but that’s just me.

If you need more ports, take a look at our best USB Type-C hubs and best laptop docking stations pages to properly expand.

HP Spectre x360 15 (2020) display

Once again, the Spectre x360 comes with a gorgeous 15.6-inch, 4K OLED panel, but this time you have the option between a normal screen and one with anti-reflection glass.

The anti-reflection glass did a good job of reducing the glare in person, but at the cost of brightness. I still prefer the original panel, despite the glare.

HP Spectre x360 15 (2020) keyboard and touchpad

The Spectre x360’s keyboard felt the same as the previous model, as it was pleasantly clicky and offered neatly spaced out keys. The matte palm rest was also soft and comfortable to use.

The touchpad was smooth to the touch but it still didn’t feel as premium as some of the ones I’ve tested in the Elitebook series. However, it was still responsive to my gestures.

HP Spectre x360 15 (2020) specs

The Spectre x360 can come packed with up to a 10th Gen Comet Lake Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM, a 1TB SSD + 32GB of Intel Optane memory, a 4K OLED display and the latest Nvidia Graphics.

This machine is also slated to come with Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5 for more seamless connectivity. On top of that, the Spectre x360 also comes with an IR webcam for Windows Hello, which will allow you to easily sign into your laptop simply by walking up to it.

HP Spectre x360 15 (2020) battery life

HP claims that the Spectre x360 will get up to 17 hours of battery life, which is insane if proven to be accurate, as the previous HP Spectre x360 (15-inch, OLED) lasted 7 hours and 46 minutes on a charge.

The company explained that it is using a low wattage OLED panel to account for the excess battery consumption from the 4K display. No worries, the actual display didn’t seem to be compromised when I saw it in person, as it was still plenty bright and colorful. We’re excited to see how this low-wattage panel plays out on our own battery test.

Bottom line

I am super excited to get more hands on time with the HP Spectre x360. Now that the bezels are trimmed down and we might be getting better battery, this might just be a laptop I actually buy for myself. Stay tuned for our full review and benchmarks, and check out more of our current CES 2020 coverage.

HP Spectre x360 15 (2020)

Would you like your 2-in-1 super-sized yes, please, and add amoled.

Charles Jefferies

Bottom Line

  • Luxurious design
  • Stunning AMOLED 4K/UHD touch screen
  • Powerful six-core Intel CPU and Nvidia graphics as tested
  • Quality speakers
  • Comfortable keyboard and touchpad
  • Middling battery life
  • Stylus not included with every configuration
  • Just one USB Type-A port

HP’s flagship Spectre line has continually impressed us with its quality, style, and features. This latest iteration of its Spectre x360 15 is the best yet for this big convertible 2-in-1 , which retains (and improves on) the charms of the 2019 model while being smaller and lighter. It’s also more powerful; our $1,849 review unit packs a six-core Intel Core i7 “Comet Lake” H-series processor and Nvidia GeForce GTX-class graphics, though it’s also available at $1,399 with a quad-core “Tiger Lake” chip if you don’t need all that oomph. Available with a stunning (and well-worthwhile) AMOLED 4K/UHD touch screen either way, the Spectre x360 15 is truly a first-class splurge. It earns our Editors' Choice for being a large-screened convertible 2-in-1 without equal.

A Trimmer, But Still Cadillac-Size, Convertible

HP took a shaver to the Spectre x360 15 for 2020. It’s down to 4.23 pounds and 8.9 inches deep thanks to its smaller top and bottom display bezels, reductions of six-tenths of a pound and six-tenths of an inch over the 2019 model. It now bests even some elite non-convertible 15.6-inchers in those areas, such as the 4.5-pound, 9.1-inch deep Dell XPS 15 9500 .

HP Spectre x360 15 (2020) - Front Three Quarter

The Spectre x360 15’s other measurements stayed the same. Its 14.2-inch width is but a few tenths of an inch wider than its screen, while its 0.79-inch thickness is forgivable for a convertible 2-in-1 this large. (The XPS 15 9500 isn’t much thinner, at 0.71 inch.)

That said, the Spectre x360 15 is still a big slab when used as a tablet. Like most convertible 2-in-1s, its 360-degree functionality is best served on a solid surface, especially in its presentation mode...

HP Spectre x360 15 (2020) - Easel

This position is great for movie-watching. It’s also practical in airline coach or in the back of a car where you may not be able to fully unfold a traditional notebook.

The screen-rotating mechanics aside, the Spectre x360 15 remains the snazziest-looking 15.6-inch convertible 2-in-1 out there. The Nightfall Black and Copper Luxe accents of my model drew easy compliments. Customizable models on HP’s site also offer a nautical-sounding Poseidon Blue with Pale Brass accents theme.

HP Spectre x360 15 (2020) - Front

Its looks are matched by quality. Its chassis and lid are made entirely from anti-glare-treated aluminum that hides fingerprints and resists flexing. Although the chassis isn’t a unibody design, the gaps between its parts are so small that they are hard to find by feel.

The attention to detail continues with the subtly concave sculpting of the palm rest, perfectly smooth chassis edges, and rear corners that look sharp but somehow aren’t. The rightmost corner holds one of the laptop’s two Thunderbolt 3 (USB Type-C) ports, with the other alongside on the right edge.

HP Spectre x360 15 (2020) - Right Rear

This location can also be beneficial since it angles at least one cord toward the rear. The Spectre x360 15 can be charged through either Thunderbolt 3 port, though it is necessary to connect the included 135-watt power adapter for full performance since Thunderbolt 3 tops out at 100 watts. The other connectivity over here comprises a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A port (it supports 10Gbps transfers, which is nice to see versus the usual 5Gbps Gen 1 ports) and a microSD card slot.

HP Spectre x360 15 (2020) - Right

Next to the Type-A port is a webcam kill switch, which isn’t an exaggeration. When it is switched off, Windows 10 no longer thinks the laptop has a webcam. For the privacy-conscious, this is arguably more secure than a physical shutter that merely blocks the view, assuming you remember to engage it.

HP Spectre x360 15 (2020) - Webcam Switch

Moving to the other side, the power button is on the left rear corner. I must admit that it took me a minute (okay...three minutes) to find it.

HP Spectre x360 15 (2020) - Left Rear

The merit of this location is that it’s less likely to be bumped by mistake in tablet mode than a side-mounted location. The left side also holds the power jack, an HDMI 2.0a video output, and an audio combo jack (headphone/microphone).

HP Spectre x360 15 (2020) - Left

It’s an overall respectable level of connectivity, though I’d prefer another Type-A port. Inside, an Intel AX201 card covers the wireless bases with Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5 support.

AMOLED: You Can’t Unsee It

This Spectre x360 15’s most eye-catching feature is, without doubt, its AMOLED (active-matrix organic light-emitting diode) display. It is state-of-the art by any standard with its 4K/UHD (3,840-by-2,160-pixel) resolution and 10-point touch support.

HP Spectre x360 15 (2020) - Front

The AMOLED technology is what truly sets this Spectre apart. Unlike traditional notebook screens or desktop monitors that use a backlighting unit, the pixels on this display are their own lighting sources. Black on the display looks like the display is turned off in those areas because indeed it is, at least for those pixels showing black. That characteristic is what gives this display an infinite contrast ratio.

It’s also super bright and colorful. HP rates it for a dazzling 400 nits and 100 percent coverage of the DCI-P3 color space that is used by cinema companies. Users of color-sensitive apps, such as Photoshop, will find the HP Display Control app useful for switching color spaces, including sRGB and Adobe RGB.

One display improvement on this 2020 model is an anti-glare treatment for the Corning Gorilla Glass surface, but it’s not matte-surfaced like a TV. It still looks reflective (it is glass, after all), but the I-see-myself mirror effect that plagues most glass-surfaced screens is much reduced. The coating also does a better job of resisting fingerprints.

For artists and scribblers, the display has a passive digitizer that supports MPP 2.0 styli. Customizable models on HP’s website include one; strangely, my review model does not. But my model isn’t devoid of freebies; it includes a carry sleeve to keep the laptop protected in a backpack or case.

A Keyboard and Touchpad Done Right

Snappy feedback, a flex-free keyboard deck, and two levels of white backlighting make the Spectre x360 15’s keyboard a comfortable place. It gets bonus points for its four-column number pad, which has a standard layout with full-size keys.

HP Spectre x360 15 (2020) - Keyboard

Just above the keyboard are two of the laptop’s four Bang & Olufsen-tuned speakers, the other two projecting sideways from under the palm rest. It’s a great-sounding setup with lots of volume. Below, the buttonless touchpad provides a smooth, expansive surface and tactile clicking.

HP Spectre x360 15 (2020) - Touchpad

To its right is a built-in fingerprint reader that can also be used for Windows Hello biometric logins.

The Core Components: True Desktop-Replacement Power

My Spectre x360 15-eb0065nr review model has hardware that is rarely seen in a convertible 2-in-1. Its six-core, 12-thread Intel Core i7-10750H processor (featuring a 2.6GHz base clock, and up to a 5GHz turbo clock) is a 45-watt chip that would be at home in a gaming notebook. Meanwhile, its 4GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Ti (Max-Q) graphics card provides enough oomph for 1080p gaming. (I’ll address the practicality of using this PC for gaming later.)

What if the Spectre x360 15’s design and AMOLED screen interest you, but you don’t need all that power? You’re in luck: HP offers the Spectre x360 15 (model 15t-eb100 ) with a quad-core, eight-thread Core i7-1165G7 “ Tiger Lake ” processor and integrated Intel Xe Graphics that are still quite capable. It starts at $1,399; adding the AMOLED display, 16GB of memory, and the 1TB solid-state drive/32GB Intel Optane storage combo of my Comet Lake-based review unit brings it to $1,679. (It also includes a stylus that, as I noted, did not come with my review model.) A one-year warranty is standard.

Besides being less expensive, the Tiger Lake model should run cooler and quieter (and offer better battery life) than my model, though that is largely educated speculation since I didn’t test it. (See some of our early testing of Tiger Lake here .) Oddly, it is listed as the same weight and thickness as my model, so it’s not as attractive as it could have been.

As for how the competition stacks up to the Spectre x360 15, it’s rather hard to say. HP appears to be the only vendor marketing a 15.6-inch convertible 2-in-1 with an AMOLED screen or a six-core H-class processor in the United States as I type this, let alone both in one machine. If the 360-degree functionality isn’t a must-have on your shopping list, the Dell XPS 15 9500 that I mentioned makes a good, albeit pricey, alternative. It commanded $2,234 on Dell’s site, but without an AMOLED screen. (The 500-nit-rated screen I mock-built it with is top-notch, though.)

For convertible 2-in-1 competition, Lenovo’s Yoga C740 (15-inch) is the closest I found, but it only loosely compares to the Tiger Lake version of the Spectre x360 15. It offers just a 1080p screen, a traditional 10th Generation Intel Comet Lake Core i7 chip, and less powerful Intel UHD Graphics for $1,249. Dell does a little better with its Inspiron 15 7000 2-in-1 (7506) , though it, too, tops out with a 1080p screen. With the same Core i7-1165G7 as in the base ($1,399 Tiger Lake-based) Spectre x360 15, it’s $1,058.

Testing the Spectre x360 15: A Unique Power Mix in a 2-in-1

It’s past time to put the Spectre x360 15 through its paces in our benchmarks. I compared it to the PCs whose basic specifications are listed below...

HP Spectre x360 15 (2020) spec comparison chart

Most of these are non-convertibles since there just aren’t enough 15.6-inch convertible 2-in-1s to fill the charts. The Lenovo Yoga C740 (15-inch) that I mentioned earlier and the Microsoft Surface Book 3 (15-inch) are the only two that use quad-core chips. The MSI Prestige 15 offers a rare six-core U-class chip (it’s rated for 15 watts, not 45 watts like the one in the Spectre x360 15), though the Dell XPS 15 is the one to beat, performance-wise; its Core i7-10875H is an eight-core monster that drove up the price of our $2,299 test model.

Storage, Media, and CPU Tests

We’ll start with PCMark 10, our general system performance assessment that simulates web browsing, video streaming, and office productivity. The Spectre x360 15 blended with the others with a strong 4,786-point showing despite its resource-hungry 4K/UHD screen. (A 4K screen can be a suppressive factor on this test.) It also measured up in our PCMark 8 storage drive test, which stresses the performance of the primary system drive.

HP Spectre x360 15 (2020) PCMark chart

Next up is a pair of CPU-crunching tests: Cinebench R15 stresses all available processor cores and threads while rendering a complex image, while in our Handbrake test, we transcode a 12-minute 4K video down to 1080p.

HP Spectre x360 15 (2020) Cinebench chart

The Spectre x360 15 could have done better in both tests; its Cinebench R15 score should be 15 to 20 percent higher, indicating that it may be throttling its performance for some reason. It did just fine in Handbrake, though.

Last in this section is our photo-editing test. We use an early 2018 release of Adobe Photoshop Creative Cloud to apply 10 complex filters and effects to a standard JPEG image, timing each operation and adding up the totals. This test is not as CPU-focused as Cinebench or Handbrake, bringing the performance of the storage subsystem, memory, and GPU into play.

HP Spectre x360 15 (2020) Photoshop chart

Now things are back on track for the Spectre x360 15. Its 147-second finish didn’t faze the eight-core Dell, but it still offers plenty of performance for advanced photo editing.

Graphics Tests

We use two benchmark suites to gauge the gaming performance potential of a PC. In UL’s 3DMark, we run the Sky Diver (lightweight, capable of running on integrated graphics) and Fire Strike (more demanding, for high-end gaming PCs) tests, both DirectX 11-based. Unigine Corp.'s Superposition is the other; it uses a different rendering engine to produce a complex 3D scene.

HP Spectre x360 15 (2020) 3DMark chart

The Spectre x360 15 scored high enough in 3DMark Fire Strike to suggest it’s capable of modern 1080p gaming, if not at maximum detail settings. The Superposition 1080p numbers confirm this, where it just cleared the bare minimum 30-frame-per-second (fps) mark for playability.

I also ran our typical 1080p gaming benchmarks on the Spectre x360 15 to gauge its real-world gaming prowess. In Far Cry 5’s built-in benchmark (DirectX 11), it averaged 55fps at Normal settings and 48fps at Ultra, while in Rise of the Tomb Raider (which we run in DirectX 12 mode), it averaged 71fps at Medium settings and 52fps at Very High.

Those numbers are more than playable, so the Spectre x360 15 can certainly serve as a casual gaming machine. However, I must stress that serious players won't find it a substitute for a modern gaming laptop. Its AMOLED screen offers only a 60Hz refresh rate, which won’t provide the smoothness of the triple-digit refresh rates that are routinely found on gaming notebooks. It’s also expensive for this level of performance. If gaming is your primary goal, check out our gaming laptops guide for better options. Think of the gaming on our $1,849 unit as a nice side dish, not the main course.

A word on cooling before we move on. The Spectre x360 15’s fans send warm air out the left and right edges of the chassis. They ran frequently in my usage, even for general web surfing, though the fan noise is nonintrusive against the usual household background noise. The area just above the keyboard gets hot under the extended stress of benchmark testing, while the rest of the chassis (including the underside) gets warm, but not uncomfortably so.

Battery Rundown Test

For our last benchmark, we measure a laptop's unplugged runtime while playing a locally stored video with screen brightness at 50 percent and audio volume at 100 percent. We use the notebook's energy-saving rather than balanced or other power profile, turn off Wi-Fi, and even disable keyboard backlighting to squeeze as much life as possible out of the system.

HP Spectre x360 15 (2020) battery test chart

The Spectre x360’s AMOLED screen, the 4K worth of pixels to push, and powerful hardware drain its large 72.9-watt-hour battery quickly; last year’s AMOLED model went for 14 hours and 9 minutes with a low-wattage Intel U-class processor. The Dell went for several hours more with the same class of hardware, though its 86-watt-hour battery helped, too. The Spectre x360 15’s time is still enough to get through the day and perhaps a little video streaming after hours.

Still the Classiest Big-Screen 2-in-1

The year-over-year changes for the Spectre x360 15 are subtle but game-changing for this big convertible laptop. Trimmer display bezels and a lower carry weight put it on par with some elite non-convertible 15.6-inchers, while more powerful hardware lets it act as a true desktop replacement.

HP Spectre x360 15 (Main Image)

The star of the show, however, continues to be the option for its AMOLED 4K/UHD touch screen, which, fortunately, is also available on the base model. A class act either way, the Spectre x360 15 stands almost by itself in the high-end, big-screen 2-in-1 market. It defines what that admittedly limited niche of laptops can aspire to. If you have the budget, and the appetite for a big, bold convertible, it doesn’t disappoint.

HP Spectre x360 14 review: A luxurious laptop that checks all the right boxes

Mattias Inghe

Expert's Rating

  • Fast in several ways
  • Stylish and well-built
  • High-quality webcam
  • Cushioned cooling
  • Heavy for a thin machine
  • Somewhat impractical ports

Our Verdict

The HP Spectre x360 14 is both stylish and fast. Although it’s on the heavier side and the price tag is rather high, it’s still one of the most luxurious laptops you can buy right now.

I’ve tested several versions of the HP Spectre x360 over the years, a luxurious and exemplary well-built laptop with a flip-up screen and pen rest. They’ve often been a little too expensive, a little too heavy, and a little too behind the curve to merit a solid recommendation. But always good.

The latest 2024 model is very elegant and sleek with a 14-inch screen covered by a glossy glass panel, a solid metal chassis, and aluminium surfaces in a muted dark grey-blue tone. A high-quality keyboard provides a nice typing feel and a large mouse pad with force feedback from a haptic motor instead of a mechanical click provides both good control and a comfortable working position. While this machine has a lot to offer, it’s important to consider the high price tag and heavy weight. Read on to learn more.

HP Spectre x360 14: Well-thought-out design… sometimes

Although the keyboard isn’t particularly wide due to the speaker grilles on either side, it does feel spacious thanks to the clever design. My first complaint is that the on button with the built-in fingerprint reader sits just above the backsplash of the keyboard. This causes involuntary locking on many other computers, but HP managed to solve it and a short press does nothing.

HP Spectre x360 14 portar

Mattias Inghe

Edges and corners are softly rounded to provide the most comfortable grip possible, which may be needed as the computer isn’t very light. It weighs 3.43 pounds, well above the 2.86 pounds that’s usually considered the limit for an ultraportable.

The computer’s few physical ports are secondary with a USB-C port and a headphone port on beveled corners towards the back and a USB-A that needs to be unfolded to plug in gadgets. Neat, but perhaps not the most practical.

It works anyway and the ports are of the highest standard. You’re getting Thunderbolt 4 on two USB-C and USB 3 gen 2 on the USB-A port. However, you don’t get more, so if you want to charge the battery on a USB-C and connect various accessories, you’ll have to get a hub.

HP Spectre x360 14: Fast OLED display

The screen is a high-resolution OLED panel with 2880×1800 pixels, up to 120Hz dynamic frame rate, intense colors with 100 percent DCI-P3 coverage, and excellent contrast as well as HDR support. Brightness under normal use is up to 400 cd/m2, so it’s great for working outdoors. However, the glossy touch surface can cause some reflection problems.

With IMAX Enhanced support, this means that not only does the screen meet high color and dynamic requirements, but the sound is also at a high level. The upward-facing speakers at the side of the keyboard and a couple more built into the front provide clean, clear sound with plenty of volume and detail. There’s a slight lack of warmth and weight in the bass, but that’s not surprising given the slim form factor.

HP Spectre x360 14 media

Both screen and sound can be controlled from the My HP app, where you’ll also find fan control, trackpad gesture controls, and pen settings (if you have one). I didn’t get one with my test computer and it doesn’t seem to be included, so I haven’t been able to test how good the Spectre x360 14 is as a tablet with the screen flipped back. But the predecessors have been good at it, so I guess HP hasn’t actively degraded the pen control in this year’s model.

For some reason, there are two more control programs, which are the HP Command Center and the Omen Gaming Hub. They only have a couple of small functions each. Why HP didn’t simply include these in My HP instead is beyond me.

HP Spectre x360 14: Good performance for most tasks

The hardware is impressive, too. Here sits Intel’s new Core Ultra 7 processor, the same one I tested just before Christmas in a new Asus Zenbook 14. The Core Ultra generation, also called Meteor Lake, doesn’t mean a huge performance boost compared to generation 13’s Core i7 processor, but the main advantages are cooler and more energy-efficient operation and significantly more powerful graphics with Arc circuitry instead of the previous UHD Graphics or Iris.

Now you can even play some games on it with decent quality, something only AMD processors could do before. At least with careful graphics effects, ray tracing, and resolution around 1080p. Occasional games may have trouble running as they don’t recognize separate video memory, but with time and the right drivers, this should clear up. Longer gaming sessions also cause performance to drop gradually.

You get 32GB of fast, low-profile DDR5X memory and a very fast 1TB SSD. You don’t get an SD card reader, so you’ll have to plug in a USB disc for more storage space if you absolutely have to.

Browsing, running Office programs with large documents, editing photos, and cutting film is mostly quick and smooth and, with so much memory, it’s easy to multitask. The Spectre x360 14 gave me much better benchmark results than the Asus computer.

HP Spectre x360 14 stängd

HP Spectre x360 14: Surprisingly quiet

The Spectre X360 14 has more subdued fan cooling, which only gives off a mild hiss that’s easy to overlook. This is noticeable when I compare stress tests on the two computers, Asus can stay at maximum level for longer, which means that long video exports are faster. But only slightly and I clearly prefer HP’s prioritization here. It’s a very comfortable computer to work on.

The fan control in My HP allows you to choose between running it completely or almost silently with muted performance, raising ambitions in a performance mode, or letting an AI-driven Smart Sense mode strike a good balance between those extremes.

Another thing that’s brand new is Wi-Fi. This is the first laptop I’ve tested with Intel’s BE200 circuit in it that provides Wi-Fi 7 support. It can be very fast and stable to shovel data through the air if you have the right router, which I fortunately had, as I am currently testing one as well. There will be an avalanche of laptops, tablets, and more mobiles running Wi-Fi 7 this year and more affordable routers, so being early with this one from HP is not entirely wrong.

HP Spectre x360 14 flippad

HP Spectre x360 14: Lasts longer than expected

The battery life is quite good. I managed two hours of processor-heavy work and gaming on a bright screen and 19 hours of surfing and word processing on a dimmed screen. That’s really good considering its high-resolution OLED screen that can often jump up to 120 Hz mode. There are longer-lasting laptops, but not many that are this slim and fast.

HP also gets points for its high-quality and versatile webcam. It films up to 4K if you use HP’s own Enhanced Camera feature. It can then be accessed in other applications such as streaming or video conferencing as a virtual camera. It has features like smart light and color control, eye contact effect, de-worming, and more. These are things that are already abundant in meeting programs such as Zoom and Teams, but it would be nice to have another option. If you run the camera directly, you get at best 1440p, even then with high quality.

The camera also supports IR for face login and there is a well-functioning presence detection that uses the camera. It shuts down the computer when you leave it, wakes it up when you return, and can dim the brightness when you’re not looking at the screen. The camera can also recognize simple hand gestures to, for example, pause a media playback or browse a photo gallery.

HP Spectre x360 14 i handen

So yes, even though this is a fairly expensive computer, you get enough quality for your money that it doesn’t feel like you’re being ripped off. If I got a slightly dubious impression of Intel’s new Ultra series with the Asus Zenbook 14, then HP straightens out the question marks here.

Another excellent laptop challenges the MacBook Pro and falls short

Mark Coppock

The MacBook Pro 16 remains undefeated as the best 16-inch laptop you can buy. From the incredible battery life to the impressive performance, the M3 Max MacBook Pro has become an unstoppable force.

Specs and configurations

Performance, display and audio, portability, the macbook pro 16 is a lot more expensive, but so much better.

Still, plenty of competitors have come along to potentially challenge it, and when I came across the updated HP Spectre x360 16, I wondered if it might make a worthy rival. As impressive as it is, though, it still doesn’t have what it takes to dethrone the MacBook Pro.

  • Why I went with the MacBook Pro over the Mac Studio
  • New MacBooks are coming, but they aren’t worth waiting for
  • Apple 16-inch MacBook Pro: don’t make a mistake you’ll regret

According to the HP configurator, the Spectre x360 16 starts at $1,600 for an Intel Core Ultra 155H, 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, Intel Arc graphics, and a 16.0-inch WQXGA IPS display. The high-end configuration includes 32GB of RAM, a 2TB SSD, a 16.0-inch OLED panel, and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4050 graphics for $2,320. As this comparison is written, HP also has a $1,500 configuration on sale that adds a 2TB SSD to the base installation.

The MacBook Pro 16 is a much more expensive laptop, starting at $2,499 for an M3 Pro 12/28, 18GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, and a 16.2-inch Mini-LED display. It costs a whopping $7,199 for an M3 Max 16/40, 128GB of RAM, and an 8TB SSD.

The Spectre x360 16 is a 360-degree convertible 2-in-1, meaning the display swivels from a standard clamshell into tent, media, and (very large) tablet modes. That adds quite a bit of flexibility over the clamshell-only MacBook Pro 16. It also requires a larger bottom chin on the display to accommodate the hinge, with the MacBook sporting a slightly larger display and smaller bezels. They’re almost the same size in width and depth, while the Spectre is lighter and the MacBook Pro 16 is thinner.

Both laptops are built from CNC-machined aluminum. The MacBook Pro 16 feels incredibly solid and well-built, and while we haven’t reviewed the Spectre x360 16, the Spectre x360 14 is also solidly made. Given past Spectre machines, the 16-inch model is likely to meet the same excellent standards.

Aesthetically, the Spectre x360 16 has a smoothed-over appearance compared to its predecessor, with its Nightfall chassis sporting the same notches in the display and the rear chassis housing a Thunderbolt 4 port and a 3.5mm audio jack. It’s a very attractive laptop. The MacBook Pro 16 comes in either Silver or Space Black, with the same streamlined chassis as the rest of the MacBook lineup. It exudes the usual Apple elegance. It’s hard to say one laptop is more attractive than the other.

The MacBook enjoys the excellent Magic Keyboard, which has large keycaps, excellent key spacing, and light, snappy switches that aren’t the deepest, but offer up superior precision. HP’s Spectre keyboards are typically excellent, but the 14-inch model’s wasn’t quite up to the standards of previous models in our testing. The MacBook wins here. The Spectre has a large haptic touchpad that, if it works as well as the 14-inch model’s, will be excellent and better than most Windows laptops. The MacBook Pro 16 has a larger Force Touch touchpad that’s the best around, with the Force Click feature added to its unparalleled responsiveness and natural feel.

Connectivity is similar, with the MacBook having one more Thunderbolt 4 port and a full-size SD card reader. Unfortunately, HP dropped SD card support on the new model. Also, with its MagSafe 3 power connector, the MacBook has an additional available Thunderbolt 4 port. The Spectre does have cutting-edge Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 wireless connectivity thanks to the Intel Meteor Lake chipset.

The Spectre x360 16 has a 9MP webcam capable of 2160p video, with hardware-assisted lowlight capabilities. It uses Meteor Lake’s Neural Processing Unit (NPU), which brings additional quality improvements. It also supports HP’s user presence-sensing technology that adopts to a user’s presence to put the laptop to sleep and lock it and wake it back up and log in via Windows 11 Hello facial recognition. The MacBook Pro 16 has a 1080p webcam and Apple’s usual quality features, and a TouchID fingerprint reader is embedded in the power button. The HP also has a fingerprint reader in the same location.

The Spectre x360 15 offers a 14th-gen Intel Meteor Lake chipset: the 28-watt Core Ultra 7 155H with 16 cores (six Performance, eight Efficient, and two Low-Power Efficient) and 22 threads. It’s mated with either integrated Intel Arc graphics or an entry-level Nvidia GeFore RTX 4050 GPU. The MacBook Pro 16 offers either the Apple M3 Pro with 12 CPU cores and 18 GPU cores or M3 Max with with either 14 or 16 CPU cores and 30 or 40 GPU cores.

We haven’t tested the Spectre x360 16, but the Spectre x360 14 can serve as a proxy. Simply put, the MacBook Pro 16 is in a different performance class entirely. While the highest-end M3 Max 16/40 results are posted here, the M3 Pro model would still be significantly faster than the Spectre. And even when equipped with the RTX 4050 discrete GPU, the Spectre won’t come close to the MacBook’s class-leading score in the PugetBench Premiere Pro benchmark that runs in a live version of Premiere Pro.

You can choose from one of two touch- and pen-enabled displays when buying the Spectre x360 16. There’s a WQXGA IPS panel running at 120Hz for longer battery life and a 2.8K OLED display for brighter and more accurate colors and deeper blacks. We suspect the latter will be an excellent display. Both panels support HP’s active pen for digital inking.

The MacBook Pro 16 offers a single display option, and it’s a good one. Its Liquid Retina XDR Mini-LED display is higher resolution and will be much brighter, while still offering excellent colors and contrast. The MacBook has the best high dynamic range (HDR) performance on a laptop, pumping out up to 1,600 nits with HDR content.

Both laptops have excellent display options and will meet the needs of various users. The MacBook’s display offers outstanding performance for creators.

In terms of audio, the MacBook Pro 16 is also class-leading, with six speakers and force-canceling woofers that pump out significant volume, with clear mids and highs and tons of bass. It’s one of a select group of laptops that can be comfortably used without headphones for a variety of media types. The Spectre x360 16 has four speakers, including two front-firing woofers, and it should have sound that’s at least as good as the Spectre x360 14’s. That would make it very good, but not equal to the MacBook.

Both laptops are large and heavy, although reasonably so for 16-inch machines. You’ll feel both in your backpack, while the MacBook will be a thinner machine and the Spectre a lighter one.

But when it comes to battery life, the MacBook Pro 16 reigns supreme. It managed 19 hours in our web-browsing test and 26 hours in our video-looping test, both of which were the best showings we’ve seen on large, powerful laptops. The Spectre x360 16 may or may not provide all-day battery life, but it’s unlikely to match the MacBook’s multiday longevity.

Yes, the Spectre x360 16 is very likely a well-built laptop with good performance and an excellent OLED display option. And it has a 2-in-1’s flexibility, with support for digital drawings and handwriting.

But the MacBook Pro 16 is one of the best-built laptops you can buy, with excellent performance, a beautiful display, and incredible battery life. If your budget is tight, then the Spectre will likely be a solid choice. But if you can afford it, the MacBook Pro 16 still remains the superior laptop.

Mark Coppock

As great as the MacBook Pro is right now, there's one important feature that's always been missing. A touchscreen. It's something Windows laptops have enjoyed for years now, and many have viewed it as a missing piece of the puzzle for the Mac. The latest rumors, however, suggest that a solid road map is in place that could potentially end with touch-enabled OLED screens coming to the MacBook Pro. The news comes from @Tech_Reve on X (formerly Twitter), who indicates that Apple has plans to reveal MacBook Pro models featuring OLED displays in the 2026 to 2027 time frame. These models might come in 14.2-inch and 16.2-inch variants and are also expected to be touchscreen enabled.

After the introduction of the OLED touchscreen MacBook Pro, Apple is expected to push both features to MacBook Air models in 13.6-inch and 15.3-inch variants. This could happen starting in 2026 and beyond, depending on the tentative timeline of the MacBook Pro launch. According to @Tech_Reve, Apple is working with Samsung and LG as its display suppliers. Each manufacturer has their own updated version of touchscreen technology that integrates the touch panel directly into the display. Samsung's technology is called Y-OCTA and LG's is Touch On Encapsulation. However, they ultimately produce the same result, a thinner panel at a lower cost. The current standard entails layering the OLED panel and then a separate touch panel, WCCFTech noted. The OLED touchscreen MacBook Pro might trickle down from the OLED iPad Pro, which is one of the big Apple rumors for a launch during the first half of 2024. The tablet already has a touchscreen display, so many believe it would be an easy transition to add an OLED screen for a similarly high-end product. Additionally, the rumored 11-inch and 13-inch models are expected to be solid testers for future OLED touchscreen devices, such as the 2026-2027 MacBook Pro. WCCFTech made the point that the OLED touchscreen MacBook Pro would likely require tweaks to the macOS interface to accommodate for the precision needed when using touch on a display. Notably, the iPad Pro already has the assistance of the Apple Pencil, but there's no telling how accessories will fit into the equation.

Apple recently introduced new MacBook Pro laptops with the M3 processor. On the surface, little else changed. The new machine sports the same high-quality and minimalist design (albeit with a striking new Space Black color), the same awesome mini-LED display, and the same exceptional keyboard and touchpad.

You might be tempted to think that choosing a new MacBook Pro will be as simple as it was with the previous generation. If so, think again. There are several important gotchas with the new machines that need careful consideration. I list five of them here. Apple Silicon has gotten much more confusing

In 2008, Steve Jobs claimed that Apple had explored adding some sort of 3G connectivity to its MacBooks, but abandoned the plans because the required chips would take up too much space inside the laptop’s case.

If Apple can integrate a wireless modem into its Apple silicon chips by 2028, however, that problem could be fixed -- 20 years after Jobs admitted defeat. 20 years in the making In the future, your MacBook could come with wireless connectivity, allowing you to access the internet even without a Wi-Fi link. That would be perfect for any time you head out onto the road with your MacBook and struggle to connect to the internet, and would bring it on par with the iPhone and Apple Watch.

Best cases for HP Spectre x360 16 (2024) in 2024

T he HP Spectre x360 16 (2024) is the latest 2-in-1 laptop from HP, which gets Intel Core Ultra processors for the first time. That gives it AI abilities for more efficient power usage, which should make this one of the best laptops for working from home , or anywhere else. You can get it with a gorgeous 120Hz OLED display with touchscreen and stylus support, and it gets a strong 9MP webcam to make you look your best in video meetings. This is shaping up to be one of the best 16-inch laptops , and you'll want to keep it in pristine condition with a quality case. Here's our picks for the best cases, sleeves, and bags for the HP Spectre x360 16 (2024).

Lacdo Protective Laptop Sleeve

Mosiso laptop sleeve, bellroy laptop caddy, hp renew business laptop bag, tomtoc 360 protective slim laptop case, canvaslife rainbow peacock laptop sleeve, v voova laptop sleeve, domiso shockproof laptop sleeve, hp spectre x360 16 (2024).

Lacdo's laptop sleeves have ample storage space for your Spectre and accessories, with a secondary zipped pocket that can fit a tablet, and a tertiary zipped pocket for peripherals and chargers. It's also got a contrasting carry handle for when you don't want to carry a larger bag, and shockproofing on the corners and edges.

Mosiso's sleeves are an affordable alternative to almost any other brand on the market, and they come in a wide range of colors to suit your personal style. They might not have the same thick corner protection of rival brands but they still have soft padding, water-resistant outer material and a secondary zipped pocket for your accessories.

Bellroy's Laptop Caddy is a stylish sleeve for your Spectre with no detail spared. It's got free-form front storage with multiple stretch dividers to stow chargers, pens, and peripherals, and a larger pocket for things like headphones so you can carry all of your work essentials in the same protective sleeve.

HP's Renew Business laptop bag syncs with the branding on your Spectre x360, and has tons of pockets inside and out with zippers to keep all of your accessories and chargers secure. It's also got a shoulder strap, carrying handle, and a strap to put around the handle of your carryon, if you frequenty travel.

This stylish slimline shoulder bag from tomtoc has reinforced corners with hard plastic and a layer of shock absorbing material on all edges to protect your convertible laptop from damage. It also has a large accessories pocket with interior pockets to keep all of your tech organized, and cables untangled.

Add a big splash of color to your every day carry with this sleeve from Canvaslife. With a variety of jaunty patterns to choose from, you'll be able to find something to fit your sense of style. And the large zippered pocket for your laptop opens wide, so there's no worries about scratches from the zipper when taking it back out.

This stylish sleeve from V Voova has all the internal foam cushioning and microfiber layer you want from a sleeve, with a spill-resistant outer layer. It also has two large zippered pockets for accessories and chargers, with plenty of space, and a useful handle on the short edge which helps if you use it in a backpack.

Any case will help with scratches and occasional drops, but only a hard shell like this Domiso model will do for the best protection. Inside, you get knitted fabric covering a thick foam layer for protection and a Velcro strap to keep your laptop from sliding around. The outer shell has 5mm of EVA plastic and a 1mm PU exterior to handle whatever life throws at you.

What you should know about choosing a case for the HP Spectre x360 16 (2024)

The HP Spectre x360 16 comes with a beautiful 120Hz OLED display in a 16:10 aspect ratio. That makes it easier to find a case for, as the previous 13.5-inch model had a 3:2 aspect ratio screen that pretty much nobody else was using. With stylus support, you'll probably want extra pockets on your carrying case for an active pen, and it never hurts if you can carry your charger along for the ride as well.

That's why my top pick to carry the HP Spectre x360 16 around is the Lacdo 360 Protective Laptop Sleeve, which has plenty of padding, multiple pockets for accessories and chargers, and a handy carrying handle, so you don't even need another bag for short trips. For something classier and eco-friendly, there's the Bellroy Laptop Caddy with plenty of interior space for any accessories you need to get your work done. And for the most protection, look at the Shockproof EVA Protective Case from Domiso, which protects with a hard shell and layers of EVA plastic and shock absorbing foam to ride out any bumps and drops.

Any of these cases will work well with the HP Spectre x360 16 (2024), so pick the one that calls out to your sense of style, and you can't go wrong.

The HP Spectre x360 16 is a great 2-in-1 laptop with a 120Hz OLED screen and stylus support.
