When picking the best boat shoes, it's often a choice between traditional moccasins that look the part but lack support and cushioning, or modern deck trainers that cover the sporty angle but are not understated. Is there a happy medium?

The nautical look never fails to triumph on the fashion circuit, which is why the best boat shoes – or deck shoes, as they are more commonly known in the boating world – are now as popular on the high street as they are on the water.

Given the fact the classic leather deck shoe was originally intended for use on the deck of a yacht, the design of the shoe included all the important elements such as good grip/non-marking soles, non-corrosive metal eyelets, and premium quality soft leather.

Nothing has changed in that respect and the classic leather boat shoe continues to dominate, particularly in the cruising world. For the more active sailor; those who spend a lot of time on deck while racing, there is also a huge choice of lightweight, technical deck trainers on the market.

The oiled treatment means even after wearing them in the rain, and while sailing, where they got regularly drenched in spray, the leather cleaned up really well, with no marks or stains and was still soft.

The leather sock lining makes the shoes comfortable enough to wear with or without socks, even when new, and I experienced no rubbing. There is extra cushioning to protect your instep arch, giving good support. A full-grain leather collar also helps keep your foot firmly in the shoe when barefoot.

What Makes A Boat Shoe Unique?

Boat shoes are typically medium-vamped, two-eyelet bluchers that have a “non-marking” rubber “deck” sole. This is for both traction on a ship’s fiberglass deck and avoiding scratches on that deck (apparently boats are expensive. Who knew?!).

They are similar to camp moccasins in terms of construction.

The laces wrap all the way around the shoe’s collar, are often white leather, and can sometimes be cumbersome to tie. Brown was the default color for years, but nowadays they’re available in just about any color you can imagine.

The merino wool offers comfort and breathability of which the latter is essential during summer. Meanwhile, the spandex and nylon provide a perfect fit so they don’t come off. They are also produced with a silicone patch at the heel, which provides additional grip.

Boat shoes are inherently casual. They’re great on weekends, at the beach, and yes, on a boat. They look best with:

• Shorts (any coordinating color, no socks)
• Chinos (any coordinating color)
• Jeans (the classic brown works best)

Don’t wear boat shoes with tailored clothes like suits or odd jackets and trousers. Exceptions can be made for those of us who are members of beach wedding parties and have no control over these things, but if you have the choice, avoid this combination.

Seasonality

Despite their nautical heritage, boat shoes are actually three-season shoes. They of course work wonderfully in warm weather, but in the autumn they can be worn casually, too. Just be judicious with your color selection.

We offer a few suggestions below:

• Spring: Any color that coordinates with your outfit. Common colors are tan, cream, blue/white and red/white
• Summer: Bright, lively colors and patterns
• Autumn: Brown leather or suede boat shoe (not really intended for wear on a boat)
• Winter: N/A

If You Actually Own A Boat

A word to the wise: if you find yourself on a boat with any regularity, you should own at least two pairs of boat shoes. This will allow you to rotate between shoes and allow them to rest a bit.

If you’re not so nautical, one pair will do you just fine. Feel free to branch out if you’re into collecting different colors.

Should You Buy Boat Shoes?

We definitely think so, especially as a summer option. They can add color and vibrance to your warm-weather wardrobe, and they’re relatively inexpensive to boot.

Make this one of the first casual shoes you purchase when building your shoe wardrobe.

Cleaning Boat Shoe Soles

Thankfully, cleaning these is quite easy: just take a toothbrush and some warm soapy water and have at it. A little elbow grease will take you a long way in this regard.

Sebago…Do not buy shoes from this company My… Do not buy shoes from this company My shoes had horrible squeaking inside the soles I brought it to a shoe guy and he said it’s not something he could fix because it’s inside the shoe the company won’t stand behind it and are requiring a receipt which I have lost they won’t even take the shoes back and look at them I would never buy a shoe from them again I don’t like companies that don’t stand behind their product.

Mediterranean luxury at a fair and accessible price is the MO at Aurelien. It boasts a whopping collection of summer-friendly loafers, crafted not just from soft suede but linen, too.

The focus on high-quality natural materials extends to bamboo linings and rubber soles inspired by deck shoes. These are elegant shoes made for jetties and jet-set lifestyles, but they’re practical too.

It’s the signature horsebit loafers that everybody thinks of first, and fair enough. The style celebrated its 70th birthday in 2023 and it comes in an astonishing array of options. But the label also does tassels, buckles, monogram prints and modern maximalist loafers, too.

Minimalism is about the only thing Gucci doesn’t do.

The Swiss label does luxury loafers in practically every style, with a distinctive low profile and dependably excellent hides. Choose from gross-grain deer leather, smooth goat leather and more – even a pair of actual silk slippers if you’ve got the ankles for them.

Celine Homme

French luxury label Celine has roots in midcentury elegance, so it’s little wonder the brand does a distinctive line of loafers.

Currently under the creative direction of a menswear uber-influencer, the designer Hedi Slimane, you can see his stamp in the label’s slip-on collection, with chunky commando soles and 70s-style loafers with gold link chains where a horsebit detail might usually sit.

Like a lot of historic luxury labels , Prada today swings between classic designs that honor its century-long history, and avant-garde fashion statements that prove it’s still pushing boundaries.

Its collection of luxury loafers is a case in point. In one corner you have classic black penny styles in brushed leather. In the other, you’ll find loafers in the label’s bold Monolith line, referencing sci-fi and cyberpunk with platform commando soles and an all-white design. Both, in their own way, are very, very Prada.

By their own admission, loafers are the most casual shoe to get the Goodyear-welted treatment at historic British shoemaker Crockett & Jones. They’re still fabulously well-made, of course, with the brand’s craftsmanship passed down since the 1800s.

It’s also a company that likes its loafers: there are dozens of styles to pick from and as well as choosing between suede or leather, penny or tassel, you can also read up on the shoes’ lasts – the foot-shape models that shoemakers use to determine the silhouette and proportions of their shoes.

It’s a name that’s synonymous with luxury leather goods , so of course Hermes does a line of excellent loafers. It’s another classic-but-baller brand, with proud logos emblems and design touches adorning its range. Who needs a horsebit loafer when you can have one with a chunky metallic buckle or a braided leather cord instead?

The leathers really are superlative, from grained calfskin to brushed suede goatskin that you could wrap a newborn in. And style-wise, the label is a little bit throwback with 70s-referencing narrow styles alongside more traditional loafers.

One of the pioneering Scandi labels that pushed minimalistic menswear in the last 15 years, Our Legacy has been tiptoeing into more grungy territory in recent seasons.

Its loafers are a telltale sign of the design direction. Even on standard all-black designs, you’ll find maximalist touches like fringed tongues, chunky fringes and stacked heels.

Made with Goodyear-welted Vibram soles, they’re also as practical as they are eye-catching.

One of the most acclaimed made-in-England shoemakers, Cheaney has operated out of the same Northamptonshire factory since the late 1800s. There, it produces an extensive collection of Goodyear-welted penny loafers, with a classic-leaning collection rounded out with a few tassel styles and suede loafers finished in bold red or green hues.

Traditionally, leather loafers were the ‘smart’ ones and suede loafers were the ‘casual’ ones. Cheaney’s range shows how outdated that is, with both styles made to such exacting standards that you could wear them all (OK, most) with jeans, chinos or tailored trousers.

For a dark, masculine take on luxury loafers, check out Dior’s offering. The label, under the creative direction of Kim Jones, carries a certain weight, even when we’re talking about dainty slip-on shoes.

Dior loafers are almost all black, stoutly designed with shiny patent leather and embellished with chunky buckles or monogram patterns. Think rock stars and flamboyantly dressed vampires.

Traditional, meticulous and very, very handsome, Church’s shoes are renowned the world over. The loafer collection is uncomplicated: city-slicker penny styles that bridge the gap between work and leisure.

Goodyear construction comes as standard but you’ll find modern touches, like rubber soles designed to keep you comfortable on your feet .

It’s part of the Prada Group today, but Church’s history dates back to 1870s Northamptonshire, from where the brand’s know-how and DNA were passed down.

One of the brands that can genuinely lay claim to creating the first loafers, G.H.Bass has produced its famous Weejuns loafers since 1936. Adapted from a type of Norwegian farm shoe, the Weejun became a staple of American college style and preppy uniforms.

We spoke with podiatrists to learn more about what to consider when shopping for the perfect pair of men’s walking shoes. To select our top picks, we kept the following advice in mind:

While I did not have the best time running in them (despite the name), they were perfectly comfortable for a few miles around town.

The outsole is mostly smooth, with no deep tread to speak of, so these are best for paved surfaces or the treadmill.

These are my go-to running and walking shoes since the brand sent me a pair at launch in 2023. It’s one of the brand’s most cushioned shoes, and makes long runs and all-day outings feel easy. Or, at least, easier.

The toebox is very spacious, with enough room for all my toes to rest comfortably, but not float unsupported. The shoe has a slight rocker shape that helps propel you forward. The outsole is made of textured, grippy rubber that feels stable on all sorts of flat terrain, in my experience.

Best for wide feet and bunions: Hoka Clifton 9

If you’re looking for a wide toe-box shoe , Cunha recommends the Hoka Clifton 9. The shoe has a spacious toe-box that accommodates most wide feet and bunions, says Cunha. I’ve walked and run many miles in these shoes — they have a wide, spacious and  supportive footbed. The mesh upper is breathable, and the outsole has deeper lugs for added durability and traction in varied terrain.

The shoe is also available in medium and wide width sizing, as well as a waterproof GTX version .

If you’ve got miles and miles ahead of you, Cunha recommends these shoes for extra durability, arch cushioning and shock absorption. I’ve worn various Ghost shoes over the past five years, including the 15s — they are always comfortable, balanced and easy to walk in. The outsole is thick and grippy — I’ve never felt any uneven traction while wearing them. They also have the most width options of all our recommendations.

“I have traditionally in my life worn stylish shoes with little comfort. It wasn’t until trying these that I learned what actual support is,” says NBC Select video producer Josh Rios. Recommended in our guides to men’s running shoes and women’s sneakers for wide feet , the 1080v13s are comfortable, durable and grippy. The shoes have a breathable mesh upper and a deep lug pattern on the outsole for tackling uneven terrain. “If I’m doing a ton of walking, I know these shoes will hold me down,” says Rios.

“These sandals are engineered with a meta-rocker sole similar to the bottom of a boat that allows your foot to smoothly roll from heel to toe minimizing shock on your foot, ankle, knees and back,” says Cunha.

The slides are, naturally, very breathable, especially if you forgo socks. They have a wide base and moderate stability and support, according to the brand. Unlike our other recommendations, they are best for recovery and casual use, not miles of walking around town.

How to shop for men’s walking shoes.

Walking shoes have more flexible soles that allow for the natural motion of walking, says Cunha. While many of our recommendations are running shoes, they are also a good choice for walking, according to our experts. Running shoes have slightly stiffer soles, and prioritize stability and shock absorption to better support high-impact activities, says Cunha.

Regardless of the type of walking shoes you consider, our experts say to keep the following in mind:

Consider where you’ll be walking

If you will mostly be walking outside, look for shoes with a more durable outside and tread patterns, says Cunha.

If you plan to walk mostly on a treadmill, look for lightweight shoes with adequate cushioning — treadmills are softer and more uniform than outdoor terrain, says Cunha.

Try them on in-person for the best fit

Our experts recommend trying on shoes in-person, or even better, get fitted at a store that specializes in running or athletic shoes. Shoe stores usually have specialty tools and an informed staff that can help you identify and consider things like your foot shape, arch type and gait. Some stores can even perform a treadmill analysis of your walk.

Cunha recommends shopping in-person later in the day when your feet are a little swollen. “If your walking shoes are comfortable at the end of the day when your feet are tired and swollen, they most likely will feel good throughout the day,” he says.

Frequently asked questions

Experts recommend replacing most types of sneakers every 300 to 500 miles, including walking shoes. Make a note of when you buy a new pair, and put a reminder for yourself every six months or so to consider your mileage.

There are three types of arches: flat, neutral and high, says Dr. Olga Shvets, a podiatrist at Central Park Podiatry . You can learn more in our full story about how to identify your arch type .

Shvets finds that people with flat feet do well in neutral (or pronator) shoes. She also recommends an insert to help the shoe fit in a more neutral manner. Anyone with a high arch may benefit from a high lacing shoe to keep the ankle stable, as well as inserts like orthotics.

The best way to get a precise determination of your foot type is to consult a podiatrist, especially if you are experiencing foot pains and discomfort, says Cunha.
