Best mens boat shoes 2024 Barbour to Brunello Cucinelli

The best boat shoes for laid-back summer style

By Harvey James

Full steam ahead on your nautical-themed style, the men’s boat shoe is a must-have in the summer months. From Sperry to Ralph Lauren, here’s our pick of the best you can buy

It might seem obvious, but the “boat” part of “boat shoes” isn’t prescriptive: you don’t have to wear them solely in international waters or on little motorised islands. Despite them making a nice aesthetic pairing to a teak deck, they are just as well suited to terra firma fashion.

The men’s boat shoe is essentially a loafer shoe style, borne of Connecticut man Paul S Sperry, who got the idea for siping (thin slits cut into the rubber sole) his shoes after seeing how his dog’s paws were gripping on the ice. The two unique features are the laces traverse the heel for a 360-degree lace-up, ensuring they don’t fly off the deck in high winds, plus the siped, soft sole, so you don’t fly off the deck in high winds.

Boat shoes are traditionally ideal for relaxed summer styling – a more paired down alternative to more formal summer shoe styles such as the leather loafer, Oxford or Derby – but in this list there are a few unconventional pieces, proving they have more year-round versatility than just sun, sea, and slippy surfaces.

Propelled by tradition, as well as its own centuries-long history, Church's ought to be your first port of call when it comes to impeccable leather footwear. These Marske boat shoes take a minimalistic approach to the classic silhouette, with a jet black leather upper contrasted only by the sloping white sole. Rest assured, this is a pair that looks just as good on land as on sea.

Stitched like a sneaker but worn like a boat shoe, this pair from Timberland combines the best of both silhouettes to create a unique summer shoe with just a hint of maritime-esque appeal. With supple blue suede panelling and a breathable mesh upper, this pair might have a casual, trainer-like feel in profile, but from the front, there's nothing but that signature boat shoe energy. Climb aboard.

Polo Ralph Lauren

Polo Ralph Lauren

On these otherwise delightfully true-to-form Ralph Lauren deck shoes (suede upper, oversize stitching, rawhide laces, rubber sole), there are a pair of metallic grilled breathing holes which are designed to give your foot that extra chance of staying comfortable in the heat. Which is exactly where these summertime pals should be worn: in the heat.

Wallflowers, avert your gaze. Big, bold, and sunflower yellow, these boat shoes from Kickers are not for the faint of heart. Boasting the brand's signature chunky, treaded sole and round toe combo, this pair quite literally elevates your 'fits for the summer season ahead.

When the boat shoe met the Derby. In a hybridised silhouette cut from the label's all-new water-conserving eco suede, the Sheldon boat shoes from Grenson are soft in both shade and construction, bringing a laidback tilt to your seasonal wardrobe.

At the intersection of form and function sits these uber-breathable and rather-chic boat shoes from Dune. Boasting a breezy knit upper, this pair has been designed with ease of wear at its core, and is finished with a sneaker-style striped rubber sole for laidback, everyday styling. Simply slip on and stroll off.

Jones Bootmaker

Jones Bootmaker

For the modern minimalist, look no further than these Philadelphia boat shoes from Jones Bootmaker. Sewn from panels of grained brown leather, this pair promotes a classic feel, tinged with a laidback and louche Italian verve, perfect for grounding holiday 'fits.

The Best Boat Shoes Buying Guide

Boat shoes are perfect for both looking good and being functional when you want to go out for a day on the water, as they provide traction on any slippery surface.

Boat shoes are mostly made of leather or canvas, which are known to repel water and are great for a day out on the sea.

Earlier on, we gave an outline of the best boat shoes that stand out from the bunch, but you may still be in a fix as to which to choose. In the rest of this buying guide, we take a look at some of the important factors we considered, and you should too so that you can zero in on the ideal boat shoes to take along on your next water adventure.

F actors to Consider When Choosing a Boat Shoe

It takes a while to break into boat shoes.

Fitting into a boat shoe is very important since you will likely be wearing them without socks and a great fit is essential for traction and grip. You should go for a snug fit because the longer you wear them, the more they stretch and get loose.

Go for a half size down from your normal size and if you are in between sizes, go with the smaller of the two. The heel should not move around too much to prevent boat shoe-induced blisters. If your feet get sore quickly, look out for additional features such as padding underfoot and a shoe collar.

Make sure to walk around in the shoes while trying them on so there aren’t any spots that would gap open or chafe your feet. To let your boat shoes break in, try wearing them for shorter periods before wearing them for a full day.

Having a shoe that does not fit is bound to ruin your day and that is one thing you would want to avoid when you are out there on a boat.

Boat shoes need to be well made because of the conditions they are subjected to. When you are on a boat, your shoes are always exposed to the harsh conditions of the water.

The best boat shoes should be durable enough for walking and everyday use.

Boat shoes are mostly made of leather, which is a super-strong material. If you take good care of your shoes, they’re bound to last you a very long time.

An important aspect to look for is water- and stain-proof boat shoes.

Also, look out for eyelets; make sure they are rust-proof because of the saltwater; if not, you will end up with a good boat shoe but with rusting eyelets. The durability of a good boat shoe is in the stitching.  Ensure that the stitching is excellent to prevent it from falling apart.

Water resistance

You need to look out for a shoe that is waterproof.

The best boat shoes are meant to have uppers that resist moisture from seeping in or allowing water to enter but also dry quickly.

This can be achieved with boat shoes that have water-resistant leather and mesh sides. Leather resists water and it’s hard for any moisture to come through it. Good boat shoes have leather that is specially treated with an oil coating to enhance its water resistance. For mesh uppers, water comes in easily but dries quickly.

Grip and traction

Boat shoes should offer enough traction and grip so you won’t slip on wet surfaces. To get the best boat shoes with good traction, go for the ones that do not come off. Make sure the heels of your shoes are tight to your ankle and do not slip off. Ideally, boat shoes should have rubber soles so you can have a better grip on wet surfaces.

For the outsole, softer rubber is recommended so they can give the sides of your feet an additional grip. Go for soles that do not leave marks on your boat.

Yes, style is important when getting the best boat shoes but traction and grip should always come first because no one wants to get caught slipping, right?

People Also Asked

Boat shoes should not be worn with socks. There is a good chance that your feet will get wet when you are out in the water and wet socks are a no-no because they make your feet damp and prone to soreness and blisters. Socks also make it easy for your feet to slip in and out of your shoes, so not wearing socks is the safest option.

It depends on the material. Some boat shoes are machine-washable and you can just wash them in the washing machine. For other non-machine-washable shoes, a toothbrush and some warm, soapy water would do the trick. Make sure you dry them properly too so they don’t smell. Also, air out your shoes after every outing.

Boat shoes are the best fit for casual clothes. A polo shirt or button-down shirt with some nice jeans or shorts is the perfect combo.

Best boat shoes: From leather deck shoes to deck trainers

  • Laura Hodgetts
  • April 10, 2024

When picking the best boat shoes, it's often a choice between traditional moccasins that look the part but lack support and cushioning, or modern deck trainers that cover the sporty angle but are not understated. Is there a happy medium?

The nautical look never fails to triumph on the fashion circuit, which is why the best boat shoes – or deck shoes, as they are more commonly known in the boating world – are now as popular on the high street as they are on the water.

Given the fact the classic leather deck shoe was originally intended for use on the deck of a yacht, the design of the shoe included all the important elements such as good grip/non-marking soles, non-corrosive metal eyelets, and premium quality soft leather.

Nothing has changed in that respect and the classic leather boat shoe continues to dominate, particularly in the cruising world. For the more active sailor; those who spend a lot of time on deck while racing, there is also a huge choice of lightweight, technical deck trainers on the market.

With more and more specialist sailing clothing companies not only understanding the needs of those involved in high octane sailing, but also investing in huge amounts of research and development, these super-light sailing trainers are becoming more and more popular.

Here’s a selection of some of the best boat shoes on the market.

Dubarry XLT deck shoes

Best lightweight boat shoes

Specifications : Sizes: 6 up | Colors: Chestnut, Navy, Navy / Brown, Old Rum, Mahogany | Material: Leather

Reasons to buy : Extra-light | Good cushioning | Three-hole lacing Reasons to avoid : Expensive | May prefer a stronger shoe for more support

YM editor Theo Stocker has been putting Dubarry’s Commodore XLT moccasin boat shoes through their paces for a few months now.

He believes they represent a happy medium between traditional moccasins and their sporty competitors.

Theo says: ‘Their key selling point is that they are, as the name suggests, extra light. In fact, they are roughly half the weight of my previous boat shoes.

‘Despite this, they still have a good degree of cushioning in the sole and are firm enough to give my foot some support, with the three-hole lacing keeping them secure on my foot.’

Hardy but breathable boat shoes

2  Chatham Sperrin boat shoes

The Sperrin Winter Boat Shoe is Chatham’s twist on its classic boat shoe, featuring three eyelet laces, contrast stitching detail, side laces and a heavy cleated sole for additional traction on slippery pontoons.

One of the key selling features is the sole spring poron insole, which promises to be cushioning, supportive, breathable and anti-bacterial.

Our tester wore them over several months and can vouch that they give their feet good all-round support, and the leather lacing kept them securely in place.

‘The eyelets are robust, which I have been impressed with as often this has been the first thing to go on previous pairs of boat shoes,’ they add.

3 Sebago Portland Lea Oiled boat shoes

Best summer boat shoes

Specifications : Sizes: 5.5 up | Colors: Brown / Dark Brown | Material: Leather

Reasons to buy : Hard wearing | Comfortable fit | Available in UK sizes 5.5-11.5 Reasons to avoid : Expensive

Made from oiled leather, which promises to make them strong, these boat shoes are available in a two-tone tan brown and black with contrast stitching, writes John Stickland . After wearing them regularly, they barely show any signs of distress or cracking, and the stitching is all still intact.

The oiled treatment means even after wearing them in the rain, and while sailing, where they got regularly drenched in spray, the leather cleaned up really well, with no marks or stains and was still soft.

The leather sock lining makes the shoes comfortable enough to wear with or without socks, even when new, and I experienced no rubbing. There is extra cushioning to protect your instep arch, giving good support. A full-grain leather collar also helps keep your foot firmly in the shoe when barefoot.

7 Keen Women’s Solr Closed Toe Water Shoe

Best open foot deck shoe

Reasons to buy : Water-resistant upper; Recycled plastic webbing; Quick-drying lining Reasons to avoid : Premium price

Although many technical boat shoes are great at shedding water and are quick drying, there are times that a closed shoe just simply isn’t what you want.

However, flip-flops and open-toe sandals are a big injury risk thanks to the number of deck fittings on most yachts – stubbing your toes in a properly serious fashion is all too easy.

Keen is one of the very few manufacturers with a product that addresses this problem.

It has a water-resistant upper with recycled plastic used for the webbing, plus a comfortable quick-drying lining.

The non-marking rubber sole has deep drainage channels, plus siped zones to improve grip.

Boat shoes were originally designed with a soft-soled tread that provides traction on slippery surfaces without leaving scuff marks. Of course, boat shoes have since been woven into summertime and vacation wardrobes beyond boating thanks to their association with sophistication and laid-back warm-weather style. Today, most boat shoes still provide a soft sole and additional traction that makes them a great alternative to sandals or flip-flops, especially if you plan to go directly from the pool deck to a more formal environment while on vacation. Our favorite is the classic and comfortable Sperry Authentic Original Two-eye Boat Shoe, thanks to its soft-sided but durable rubber sole and timeless look.

We spoke to a handful of podiatrists and footwear experts to get their tips on exactly what to look for in boat shoes and which brands they recommend when it comes to quality, affordability, and style.

Best Overall

Sperry women's original two-eye boat shoe.

This classic pair of boat shoes will always be in style thanks to the sophisticated neutral-hued leather material and soft-sided but durable rubber sole.

The leather material might be too hot in warmer climates.

The Sperry Women's Authentic Original Two-eye Boat Shoe will always be our top pick when it comes to deckside footwear. An Americana summer staple, these boat shoes pack a serious punch in both the style and quality departments. The classic silhouette and water-resistant leather material make this option a particularly good choice for anyone hoping to pack just one pair of shoes that can easily take them from the pool deck to dinner and drinks without appearing overly casual.

This option is also a smart pick for those in search of a summer-appropriate shoe that offers more foot support than a flip-flop or sandal. The rubber sole features shock-absorbing support while the perforated, cushioned footbed provides even further comfort and arch support for long days on your feet.

The Details: Leather, rubber | 5 to 12 | 1.7 pounds | Waterproof

Best Budget

Roxy women's ahoy slip-on boat shoe sneaker.

You don’t have to spend a ton to get a high-end-looking summer shoe, and this lightweight and comfortable canvas boat shoe is proof of that.

This option tends to run large, so you might have to size down.

Leather boat shoes are great, but a canvas and rubber option will be much more affordable and can look just as sophisticated as the more expensive alternative. The Roxy Women's Ahoy Slip-on Boat Shoe Sneaker is one of our favorite budget-friendly options for a number of reasons. The lightweight canvas material is much more breathable and weather-appropriate for hot summer days while the memory foam interior and recycled terry cloth lining help ensure your feet are comfortable and cool all day long.

The Details: Canvas, rubber | 5 to 11 | 1.15 pounds | Not waterproof

Best for Walking

Skechers women's go walk lite boat shoe.

This option might look like a classic boat shoe, but the lightweight sneaker was designed to suit city travelers who need something with enough support to wear walking around all day.

The laces are not adjustable and might be too loose for smaller feet.

Looking for a boat shoe silhouette but don’t want to forego optimal foot support? The Skechers Women's Go Walk Lite Boat Shoe features a laundry list of perks that make it an excellent option for those who tend to walk tens of thousands of steps while on vacation. The lightweight design features a responsive 5Gen cushioning for protecting your feet while wandering through city streets as well as a Skechers Goga Max high-rebound insole and a soft fabric lining so you won’t have to worry about uncomfortable rubbing or blisters.

The Details: Textile, rubber | 5 to 12 | 10 ounces | Not waterproof

Sperry Women's Angelfish Boat Shoe

This modern boat shoe offers a much more feminine and elegant silhouette than higher-top alternatives and can easily be paired with dresses and skirts.

The low-top design might not be comfortable for those with wider feet.

The boat shoe silhouette is one of the most versatile options to bring on vacation — but this low-top alternative is an even better option for women who plan to wear it with dresses or skirts. The shorter-cut kicks are much more elegant than high-top boat shoes, which makes them easy to pair with your entire vacation wardrobe without sacrificing comfort or support. This model also comes with a molded EVA midsole that provides all-day cushioning and proper arch support.

Materials: Leather, rubber | 5 to 12 | 1 pound | Not waterproof

Most Breathable

Betrue lightweight boat shoes for women.

This pair of casual boat shoes is made from an ultra-lightweight canvas material that will allow your feet to breathe even in warmer climates or hot summer afternoons.

The slip-on design is much more casual than a more classic boat shoe.

Although leather boat shoes offer a sophisticated and versatile vacation staple, they might be too warm or tight-fitting for those who run hot or experience swelling while in warmer climates . This canvas and rubber alternative is an excellent option for travelers looking for a breathable and lightweight shoe that is easy to slip on and off even after hours of wear. The honeycomb air vent insole and mesh upper were designed to push air through the shoes to keep your feet dry and cool throughout the day.

The Details: Canvas, rubber | 6 to 11 | 1.04 pounds | Not waterproof

Best Waterproof

Sperry women's authentic original float boat shoe.

This pair of fully rubber boat shoes floats just in case you lose them in the water.

This option might not be the best for wearing in formal settings or in the city.

The Sperry Women's Authentic Original Float Boat Shoe offers a happy compromise between boat shoes and more typical sandal-style footwear; think of it as a slightly more elevated version of a Croc sandal. The rubber design is fully waterproof and can double as a water shoe when needed, while the super lightweight design was made to float on top of the water just in case you lose your shoes in the pool or ocean. We also love that the molded treads offer surprisingly good traction and grip even on wet and slippery pool decks.

The Details: Rubber | 5 to 12 | 2 pounds | Waterproof

Most Durable

Twisted x slip-on boat shoe.

This slip-on boat shoe is crafted from extremely durable recycled material and is an excellent option for those looking for a sustainable alternative.

The colorful design is not very versatile and might be hard to pair with your existing wardrobe.

Boat shoes go through a lot throughout the course of their lifetime, which is why it’s so vital to opt for a pair that'll last you for years to come. The Twisted X Slip-on Boat Shoe can go the distance thanks to the high-quality leather, tweed, and rubber material. Even better, this option was crafted using sustainable and recycled materials so it won’t just last you a long time — it has actually saved post-consumer trash from ending up in the landfill. The colorful red and orange print might be a little loud for some, but it can easily be paired with neutral colors like browns, beiges, and even black or white.

The Details: ecoTWX tweed, leather, rubber | 5.5 to 11 | 1.3 pounds | Not waterproof

Best for Wide Feet

Hey dude wendy loafers.

This minimalist option is breathable and spacious with additional width to accommodate for wider feet or those whose feet get swollen in warmer climates.

The contrasting white sole makes this option look more like a sneaker than a traditional boat shoe.

Shopping for boat shoes can be difficult when you have wide feet, or if your feet tend to swell in warmer climates or after a long day of walking around. That’s where the Hey Dude Women's Wendy Shoes comes in. This minimalist option offers the same style and comfort as a more traditional boat shoe but it was made with a little extra room on the sides to accommodate wider feet. It also includes a unique rounded toe design that flexes and folds as needed in order to provide more room in the front of the shoe without sacrificing proper arch support and cushioning.

The Details: Cotton, rubber | 5 to 11 | 2 pounds | Not waterproof

Best Splurge

Timberland heritage noreen boat shoe.

This stylish and on-trend option is well worth the investment if you’re looking for a unique and city-appropriate alternative.

This option isn’t water-resistant and might not be the best for waterside escapes.

There’s something to be said about a reimagined platform boat shoe. The Timberland Heritage Noreen Boat Shoe might not be the best option if you’re looking for a practical and water-friendly shoe to bring to a pool deck or beach — but it will pack a serious punch when it comes to stylish city dressing. What’s more, the stunning shoe also shines in the sustainability department. At least 50 percent of the leather was sourced from tanneries that have achieved a Leather Working Group silver rating (this encompasses energy use, waste production, and water treatment).

The Details: Leather, rubber | 6 to 11 | Not waterproof

Most Versatile

Columbia women’s dorado boat shoe.

They look more like a tennis shoe and can be worn for just about any occasion.

They aren't water-resistant, but they are water-repellent and dry quickly.

If the style of traditional boat shoes isn't your thing, consider the Dorado PFG Boat Shoe from Columbia. It looks just like an everyday tennis shoe while still providing the no-slip grip that other boat shoes offer. These shoes feature a mesh and synthetic upper that is both breathable and lightweight and a Techlite midsole for extra cushioning and arch-support. While they aren't water-resistant, the textile fabric does repel water, so you're safe to wander on deck or on a dock without suffering with wet feet for the rest of the day. They also come in four cute colors, so you can find the perfect pair to match your style.

The Details: Textile, rubber | 5 to 12 | 9 ounces | Waterproof

Tips for Buying Boat Shoes

Choose the best material.

According to Dr. Patrick McEneaney, owner and CEO of Northern Illinois Foot & Ankle Specialists, the material you choose for your boat shoes should be breathable, first and foremost. “Some of the materials are very dense and very thick and don't have a lot of give to them which can cause your toes to rub, especially if you have bunions or hammer toes,” he explains. “Some of the fabrics are a little looser and there's actually a little more stretch to them, kind of like you'd find with a leather shoe where it'll actually stretch over time. Some of these fabrics are very tightly woven, which won't stretch and other ones will.”

Prioritize comfort

“Most boat shoes don't have a ton of support to them. But some of them are as flimsy as a bedroom slipper while some have some support built into them,” explains McEneaney. “So I like to see a little bit of bend in the shoe and not have as much bend in the midsole.”

Look for shoes with great traction

If you're actually going to be boating, it's important to buy shoes that are designed for that function, not just what looks cute and fashionable. Be sure your boat shoes offer an appropriate amount of traction to ensure you'll remain safe while onboard, and look for soft rubber soles that won't damage the boat, either.

Dr. Patrick McEneaney, owner and CEO, Northern Illinois Foot & Ankle Specialists

“Don't assume your running shoes or tennis shoes will do the job on a slippery boat deck. It's one thing to be a tourist on a river cruise; it's another thing to be responsible for helping to steer a sailboat. Those environments are totally different, and you'll only be helping yourself by having the right footwear.”

Keeping boat shoes in clean and like-new condition isn’t all that difficult. Most boat shoes are quick-drying or water-resistant so all you’ll need to do is take a little water and dish soap to the upper material before letting the shoes air-dry. You can also remove the insole in most boat shoe styles before wiping them down with some soapy water and hanging to dry.

If your boat shoes are made of leather, you may also consider regularly applying leather conditioner, especially after they've gotten wet, to prevent cracking.

Boat shoes are designed to be worn without socks for a classic maritime look — but these days, it’s totally fine to wear socks with your boat shoes for a more city-appropriate style. A good pair of no-show socks might also reduce friction if you’re worried about rubbing causing blisters.

Although most boat shoes have laces on the upper and around the exterior of the shoe, boat shoes are designed to fit loosely but shouldn't feel like they’re going to fall off. You should be able to slip your boat shoes on and off without having to unlace them each time.

Most boat shoes, especially those made of leather, can use some breaking in to get the most comfortable fit. You should consult your manufacturer's instructions on breaking in since for many pairs, including Sperry's , the break in process can take weeks. Before you wear your new pair of shoes for long periods of time, you should consider wearing around your house so they can mold to your feet. If they feel a bit tight, you can also wear them with a pair of socks to help them stretch.

The Best Boat Shoes for Men Who Promise Not to Wear Them to Weddings

best men's boat shoes

Paul Sperry, who had previously been selling duck decoys to outfitters like Abercrombie and Fitch, came up with the idea for boat shoes in 1935 after watching his dog pad happily across slippery and icy terrain. Using a knife, he cut grooves in his shoes so they’d more closely resemble paws. Despite the mythology surrounding Sperry falling off his sailboat into the long island sound, the first Sperry Top-Siders were created on the mainland. Sperry’s patent was for a non-slip sole.

Amazon sale: save up to 50% on men’s sneakers from aldo, lacoste, and more, from bodega trips to marathons, there’s a brooks shoe for every runner.

As preppy style continues to find its way back into the cultural zeitgeist, much in part to Gen Z’s revival of early 2000’s fashion combined with the ever growing popularity of retro-street style, new versions of boat shoes continue to pop up. This is why Sperry keeps announcing collabs, including the likes of Rowing Blazers, and in crazy colors and new materials. The Top-Sider is a “knockaround” shoe, even when it’s cordovan and even when there’s fringe involved.

What Experts Say

George Laboda, classic men’s style expert of Atlas & Mason and founding member of Gents’ Lounge , confirms that boat shoes are the safest option for a semi-casual spring/summer shoe. They won’t set you apart like a huarache or espadrille, but they will get the job done. Parker York Smith , another impactful influencer and stylist helping his audience find confidence with their own closets, believes that boat shoes have a place along coastlines but find a harder time fitting in among other settings.

The Best Boat Shoes for Men

You’ll notice this list is stacked with the best Sperry boat shoes for men, but it does have some favorites from close competitors. This includes everything from classics to refreshed designs.

Men’s Authentic Original™ Boat Shoe

These are the Sperry mainstays. They come with the 360° LACING SYSTEM™, WAVE-SIPING™ for better traction, and are hand-sewn in the classic moccasin style. The leather is premium and may take a little break-in time, but with some wear, they become even more of a good fit for your fit. They also come in a variety of colors to meet your needs.  These are, in the SPY team’s opinion, the boat shoe go-tos. Their low profile design makes them perfect for casual spring/summer styling like Laboda and Smith mentioned. The loafer design makes them tempting as a wedding shoe option, but the team still advises against it. Keep these as an alternative to a sneaker instead.

Men’s Authentic Original™ Cross Lace Boat Shoe

This is another great, classic option that’s a bit dressed down from the Originals. The pre-worn feel of these boat shoes in particular give them an easy, cool, lived-in design. These would be perfect beach day shoes.

Men’s Authentic Original™ Veg Re-Tan Leather Boat Shoe

Sperry served up an option that captures the same great style as their original boat shoes, but with a Vegan twist. The sole of this Sperry option offers a little something extra. The speckled design sets it apart from the originals, but also does serve as a reminder of their Vegan construction for a cool conversation starter.

Men’s Gold Cup™ Billfish™ PLUSHWAVE™ Boat Shoe

Laboda recommends a chunkier sole for a more modern look. If the chunky dad-sneaker is your jam, why not do it all the way with a dad-style boat shoe too? Comfort and style can share the same sole. If styling these with shorts evokes a little too much “country-club dad,” pairing them with a baggier denim will make them feel like a fresh throwback that Gen Z would be proud of.

Men’s Authentic Original™ Whitewashed Boat Shoe

Sperry could have just released leather boat shoes in standard colors: tan, black, dark brown, etc. Instead, they’ve created a whole slew of color options. Just like finding Crocs in every living color, Sperry made it possible to find boat shoes in most colors to suit any fancy. These de-saturated shoes add more uniqueness to the category. The lighter tones with this version of boat shoes lend themselves even more to summer styling. Like our style experts mentioned, think light linens and knit polos for a grown-up casual vacation look.

Unisex Cloud Authentic Original™ 3-Eye Vibram Boat Shoe

Not every boat shoe is made to look the same. Notice the eyelets are simplified to make room for a showstopper of a sole. The lug sole gives it some height and modern beefiness. Smith says that while he’s not sure if a lug-sole negates the whole boat shoe aesthetic, it is something that he’s more drawn to. These definitely have the modern, street style touch that Sperry is introducing into new styles and collabs.

Unisex Sperry x Rowing Blazers Cloud Authentic Original™ 3-Eye Vibram Boat Shoe

This version of the boat shoe kicks up the street style a few notches. The corduroy upper, hiking laces, vibram sole, and heel tab details combine design elements that may otherwise have no business working together, but that’s the beauty of collaboration and street style influence. Laboda called these out as textured upper and chunky sole perfection, and for someone who’s an expert in classic style, that’s a big shoutout. A revitalized version of prep style is currently being adopted by street style and retro enthusiasts alike. Rowing Blazers does a good job of breathing life back into old off-limits prep style, making this collaboration an impressive boat shoe refresh.

Men’s Authentic Original™ Float Boat Shoe

They’re made for guys who are actually planning on spending their time on boats or near docks. These are for the guys who need Crocs, but don’t actually like Crocs. Rather than add a bunch of new features, Sperry went back to the core functionality and design for their shoes: non-slip made to get wet. Paul Sperry would be proud.

Men’s Authentic Original™ Vibram 3-Eye Boat Shoe

A Vibram® Sole makes everything more comfortable. Vibram is an Italian company that makes a particular type of rubber sole. Originally made for better hiking shoes, these kinds of soles are now adopted to various types of boots and shoes for more comfort and a unique design. Adding a Vibram® sole to a boat shoe is the natural progression.

Men’s Bahama II Sneaker

They’re made for those who need an even more casual alternative to boat shoes. This style still incorporates the moccasin construction, but updates it with a twill upper and a rubber outsole. If regular boat shoes didn’t make the wedding invite list, then these should be left to your most casual outings. If there’s a gap in your wardrobe between sneakers and summer shoes, let these Sperry sneakers be the bridge.

Rancourt & Company Classic Ranger-moc

They’re made for guys who want to come as close as they can to dress shoes with a moccasin/boat shoe-style shoe without actually hitting it. The quality of the leather elevates these over some of the competitor options, but the overall moccasin style keeps them in the semi-casual category. If you felt compelled to wear denim, a button-up shirt, and a blazer with boat shoes, these would be the ones to pair with. However, if you catch side-eye from any dress-code enforcers, you didn’t get this from us.

Sebago Rossisland Jib Shadow

Laboda said that these were a great [nubuck] option with a bit of color variation. Nubuck isn’t a typical boat shoe option because of it’s poor reaction to water, but if you’re looking for something with more texture that still looks like a boat shoe, these are a solid choice. The nubuck leather leans more towards moccasin than boat shoe, but it also shows just how closely the two show designs are related. There’s a bit of ruggedness that comes along with a texture leather as opposed to a smooth finish.

QuoddyMen’s Canoe Shoe: Brown Pebble

They’re made for the guy who wants old money prep with a driving loafer silhouette, but new money casual style with some boat shoe flavor. Pebbled leather on the upper definitely elevates the shoe. It’s a nice juxtaposition against a more matte Vibram® sole.

Polo Ralph Lauren Bienne Tumbled Leather Boat Shoes

Laboda and Smith both mentioned linen pants/shorts as staple boat shoe companions. The low profile and worn leather makes these excellent selections for a smart casual linen and knit polo outfit. Polo Ralph Lauren’s brand is synonymous with elevated, classic style. The construction of these boat shoes in particular carries an air of that elegance. If you want boat shoes that feel more dressed up, look no further.

Yuketen Boat Shoe DB with Lug Sole – C Whisky

They’re made for the guy who’s at the forefront of edgy and trendy fashion. This brings in the chunky sole element that Laboda said he loved in other versions of boat shoes but with even more attractive detail. The heavy moccasin stitching as well as the additional stitching around the body of this boat shoe set it apart. This is the intersection of prep, rugged, and street style that feels on trend right now.

Eastland Men’s Yarmouth Camp Moc Slip On

$45.23 $100.00 55% off

Eastland crafted these boat shoes-moccasin hybrids with their Eastland Exclusive Active Memory Foam insole, which means boat shoes just got more comfortable. Rather than revolutionize design, making a boat shoe that is more comfortable could be the better move. As many brands try to “innovate” to stay relevant, keeping things simple and comfortable is the way to many classic style lovers’ hearts.

They’re for the guy who hates sandals and even boat shoes, but still needs something to wear to the beach or the dock. These are the least boat shoe-looking options on the list. If you’re still not convinced that boat shoes have a place in your current wardrobe, let these be your foray into dock-friendly footwear. The moccasin construction still echoes the boat shoe-style, but the textile upper and memory foam sole give you something different.

6 Best Italian Loafers for Men: Comfort & Panache in 2024

We independently evaluate all recommended products and services. Any products or services put forward appear in no particular order. If you click on links we provide, we may receive compensation.

Nothing says comfort and confidence in quite such an attractive way as Italian loafers. The famously well made and beautifully designed shoes coming out of Italy have stood as the height of luxury for generations. And, as you’ll see in this list, nothing has changed.

Well, that’s not quite true because globalization has transformed the production of the best Italian loafers for men. That’s led to some strange questions about what actually counts as an Italian loafer. Is it a loafer whose leather (or suede) comes from Italy? Or one that was made in Italy? Nobody, truth be told, is quite sure.

In this list of the best Italian loafers for men, I’m going to recommend 6 amazing pairs of shoes that all share in the heritage of Italian loafers. Some of them are 100% Italian; others feature Italian leather but were produced elsewhere. After all, the style and quality of a shoe is what matters most at the end of the day.

Let’s jump right in and see if we can’t help you find your next favorite pair of men’s Italian loafers.

Key Takeaways

I’ve owned, worn, and tried on more pairs of Italian loafers than I can count. And, after looking back on all those different pairs and checking out a ton of new options, I’m quite happy with the list of 6 standout loafers that I’ve put together.

Overall, I placed the Myrqvist Stenhammar at the top of this list as the best Italian loafers for men. The dark brown calf leather is simply top class, and the classy design will look just as good with a suit as it will as part of a more casual outfit.

I’ve also recommended a more casual pair of loafers, the Aurélien Light Grey Yacht Loafers , as well as, on the opposite extreme, the more explicitly formal Oliver Cabel Penny Loafers . The other options have several different styles and approaches, so I’m sure that you’ll be able to find a version of the loafers you’re picturing.

  • Buying Considerations

How We Chose

Why trust us.

  • Final Verdict

Best Overall: Myrqvist Stenhammar

Why they’re great: These incredibly cool, brown calfskin Italian loafers are a great way to make a statement, whatever you’re wearing. I’ve worn them with both suits and casual attire and never gotten an odd look (even when casual means jeans and a T-shirt).

I really like the dark brown calf version of these shoes, but you can also check out the black calf, black suede, or brown suede options.

Who are they for? I’d say that, basically, anyone with a discerning taste in men’s footwear would love to have these excellent loafers in their closet. They’re some of the best Italian loafers for men.

Flaws but not deal-breakers: There’s not anything interesting in the form of tassels or metal clasps going on with these shoes, which might be something you’re looking for.

Material: 100% Leather or 100% Suede | Sole Material: 50% Rubber, 50% Cork  | Sizes Available: U.S. 8.5 to U.S. 13.5 | Colors Available : 4

Best Luxury: Velasca Verserat Lined College Loafers

Why they’re great: The Velasca Verserat Lined College Loafers are both incredibly stylish and unbelievably comfortable on your feet . Everything in these shoes is leather, including the soles, which means that they fit your feet so well that you won’t have a problem standing or walking around in them all day.

Who are they for? These are some of the best Italian loafers for men. They have an eye-catching horse-bit metal clasp as an accent, which makes them a great choice if you like that style.

Flaws but not deal-breakers: The tumbling is quite obvious on all these loafers (meaning that they have a rougher texture than smooth leather), which isn’t really a flaw but more of a very distinctive feature.

Material: 100% Tumbled calf leather | Sole Material: 100% Leather | Sizes Available: U.S. 5 to U.S. 13 | Colors Available : 3

Best Everyday: Aurélien Light Grey Yacht Loafers

Why they’re great: The Aurélien Yacht Loafers are far and away the most casual option on this list of the best Italian loafers for men. They’re made from incredibly soft and comfortable suede and come in a variety of colors that are generally more appropriate for the boat than the boardroom. And, a nice extra-nice touch is the calf-skin interior.

Who are they for? Anyone who’s looking for a pair of swanky Italian loafers to do some hardcore chilling in should take a look at these.

Flaws but not deal-breakers: Honestly, this is a product for which the wealth of color options you have can make actually choosing one to go with difficult.

Material: 100% Leather | Sole Material: 100% Calf Skin | Sizes Available: 39 E.U. to 47 E.U. | Colors Available : 25

Best Formal: Oliver Cabell Penny Loafer

Why they’re great: These loafers from Oliver Cabell can fit right into your formal looks without looking even the least bit out of place. The dark navy color can go well with a black suit, as well as several other color palettes.

Who are they for? If you’re a fan of ease and comfort when you’re dressed up, look no further.

Flaws but not deal-breakers: These are among the best Italian loafers for men. However, there’s a small white tag on the outside edge of the shoe, which I think provides a great accent, but others might feel that it’s misplaced.

Material: 100% Leather | Sole Material: 100% Leather | Sizes Available: U.S. 6 to U.S. 14 | Colors Available : 3

Best Budget: Rockport Mens Classic Loafer Lite Venetian

Why they’re great: The Rockport Men’s Classic Loafer Lite Venetian is a great pair of shoes that embody everything that’s great about Italian loafers while maintaining an affordable price. The brown or black leather they come in, as well as their simple design, mean that these are some very versatile shoes.

Who are they for? If you’re desperate for a pair of men’s Italian loafers but are put off by the high prices, then this is an option you should consider.

Flaws but not deal-breakers: You’re usually going to sacrifice a bit of the quality of construction when you go for lower-priced options. But, these shoes are more than well made enough to last for a long while with proper care.

Material: 100% Leather | Sole Material: 100% Thermoplastic elastomers | Sizes Available: U.S. 7 to U.S. 13.5 wide | Colors Available : 2

Best on Amazon: Allen Edmonds Men’s Verona ii Loafers

Why they’re great: These beautiful Italian-made loafers from Allen Edmond can make an instant impact on your day-to-day fashion choices. The horse bit style is really well executed here, meaning that you’ll have a classy pair of shoes that go well with both formal and casual attire.

And, the manufacturer offers free returns, so it’s easy to send them back on the off chance that you don’t love them.

Who are they for? Amazon is a great way to fill out openings in your wardrobe easily and conveniently.

Flaws but not deal-breakers: They aren’t the cheapest shoes on this list, but the extra price you’re paying is for top-quality leather and craftsmanship.

Material: 100% Leather | Sole Material: 100% Leather  | Sizes Available: U.S. 8 to 12 U.S. | Colors Available : 4

Buying Considerations for the Best Italian Loafers For Men

The main question you have—in terms of material—when shopping for Italian loafers is whether to go for leather or suede loafers. Both options are great, to be honest, but they do offer different benefits to someone wearing the shoes.

Suede is incredibly soft and comfortable , and it’ll immediately start morphing to fit your feet when you first put them on. However, that does mean that they’ll start to wear out more quickly than leather loafers, especially if you wear them often and walk a lot in them.

Leather loafers, on the other hand, have a lot more structure to them. They also tend to go better with formal attire , whereas suede shoes are more of a leisure thing.

Once you’ve decided on the material that you want for your loafers, you then need to pick out what color you want them to be. Some men will prefer the more limited and conservative colors that leather loafers come in, and others love the sometimes outlandish options you have with suede loafers.

Where and when you’re planning to wear the loafers you’re shopping for, as well as the types of outfits you’re planning to wear them with should be your first guide to what color to choose.

If you’re planning on wearing them to work or other formal settings, then I’d recommend going with a black or dark brown leather loafer. But if you’re getting a pair of loafers for a summer vacation , then you can definitely think about a wider range of colors.

Finally, ensuring that you’re getting the right size is essential when you’re shopping for loafers. You should always be sure to consult the brand’s sizing advice, as this can help you make the right decision.

It’s also crucial to think about the unique features of your feet that aren’t represented in your size. Are your feet narrow or wide ? What types of shoes have you been comfortable in before? Answering all these questions before you make a purchase can help you get a comfortable pair of shoes you love wearing.

The best Italian loafers for men are an investment in the true sense of the word. Not only are they expensive, but they’re also a clothing item that you want to last for a long time. That’s why getting good advice before you buy is essential, and it’s also why we put together this article.

We chose the products on this list based on the quality of the materials used to make them, the hardiness of their construction, and whether or not they embody the timeless design of Italian loafers. We also considered the following four factors, ensuring that all the products and brands we recommended hold up to them.

Brand Reputation: We’ve recommended only reputable brands that have a long history in creating excellent loafers.

Customer Reviews: All the products on this list have overwhelmingly positive reviews from real customers who have bought the specific shoes in question.

Price: All the products on this list offer real value to match their price tag.

Transparency: The brands we’ve featured here are all up-front and transparent about the most important questions, from the origin of their materials to their shipping and return policies.

We here at FashionBeans all really love Italian loafers. We collectively own dozens of pairs of Italian loafers, some of which we love and some of which were definite disappointments.

By putting all the experience we’ve had with Italian loafers into the creation of this list, we’re confident that you can be confident ordering any of the products we’ve recommended.

We went over hundreds of products and read thousands of customer reviews when putting this list together. That means that the six pairs of Italian loafers we’ve recommended represent a tiny fraction of all the products we considered. Rest assured that only the absolute best Italian loafers for men made it onto this list.

Final Verdict

The Myrqvist Stenhammar is, if you ask me, the best of the best Italian loafers for men that you can buy online right now. They have a classic yet edgy design that really makes a statement.

But there are lots of other great choices on this list, and you can’t really go wrong with any of them. Make sure to enjoy your new loafers, whichever you go with.

Italian loafers have a long history that informs their similarities and differences from other types of loafers. Generally speaking, Italian loafers feature high-quality materials and tend to certain design choices, such as a longer profile and pointed toes. Nowadays, many shoe brands in Italy don’t make traditional ‘Italian loafers,’ while some shoe brands from outside the country make products that are more in line with classic Italian loafers.

19 Luxury Loafer Brands Making The Highest Quality Slip-Ons

19 Luxury Loafer Brands Making The Highest Quality Slip-Ons

Premium materials, brand cachet, exquisite craftsmanship - these are the shoemakers producing the highest quality luxury loafers on the market.

Words by: Men's Flair Editors

For anyone who lives to loaf, a pair of loafers is the ultimate footwear choice. Dapper and dandy, preppy or sleazy, loafers are chameleon shoes that can work with everything from a pair of light-wash denim to your finest tailoring.

The slip-on style is more casual than Oxfords and Derbies but it’s still at that end of the smart-casual spectrum. What makes them different is a rakish, flamboyant quality: you can wear them to the office if you want to, but these are fun shoes. Dancing shoes. Posing shoes. Shoes that don’t necessarily need socks.

In preppy uniforms, they pair with collegiate jackets as well as button-down shirts. Suede options work with shorts in the summer. Chunky, dual-color loafers bring a little Latino flair to your tailoring or also work with jeans .

A pair of luxury loafers are genuine statement shoes. It was the famous horsebit design that catapulted Gucci to its lofty position as the don of Italian luxury . And penny or tassel loafers are naturally head-turning designs. When they’re made from the finest leathers and suede, the quality is visible to the naked eye. And these are the shoemakers that have perfected the slip-on.

What to look for when buying luxury loafers

Luxury loafers should be crafted from the finest leathers. They’ll come in different finishes, from suede to cross-grain leather, smooth calf leather to eye-catching croc-effect styles.

If you’re paying luxury prices, make sure you’re getting a luxury material. The label should have detailed information about the leather’s provenance so you know it’s both high-quality and sustainably sourced.

The brand should also provide care instructions, with the details depending on the type of leather you’ve bought. If you’re spending this much on a pair of loafers, you need to feel confident they’ll last.

Crockett & Jones

The best luxury loafer brands not only pride themselves on their craftsmanship, they’ll tell you all about it. At length. That’s a good thing of course.

Expect handmade shoes, built methodically using techniques passed down through the generations. Made-in-Italy and made-in-England shoemakers will often boast Goodyear-welted construction, hand-stitching and full internal leather linings. All of which ensure maximum longevity for your loafers.

Wearing a pair of Gucci loafers is a near-textbook definition of statement dressing, but a lot of loafer styles are not overtly branded. Some of the names on the list below, however, produce loafers with distinctive monogram prints that demand to be seen.

Others are so obviously well-made that they will send out stealth wealth signals , which practically guarantees you’ll be asked about them often. In a lot of ways this is even better.

Man wearing brown leather penny loafers by Velasca with raw denim jeans and a brown wool blazer

Penny loafers, horsebit loafers, fringe and tassel loafers – that is the question. The penny style is the most reserved, elegant and wearable. The others offer three variations of ostentatious footwear.

The tassel, the fringe and the horsebit are completely functionless. Their only purpose is to mark you out as a dandy. Dual-color penny loafers are also trending right now , the leather panels usually split into white and one other color. It’s a more casual style that works well with wide-legged pants and a Cuban collar shirt.

One final mention: slipper-style loafers are also an option . They come backless or with sheepskin linings and look like they’re designed for men who wear jacquard monogrammed smoking jackets around their mansions. But they’re there if you want them.

Men’s luxury loafer brands that are worth the money

Offering a comprehensive range of penny, tassel and horsebit loafers, Italian label Velasca does made-in-Italy menswear at cheaper prices than most. It sells direct to the consumer, cutting out the middlemen and unseen costs.

The company was only founded in 2013 but the style is classic: elegant and effortless as only the Italians know how . Look for chocolate-brown suede pennies for everyday wear or super-soft and super-shiny tassel loafers to make your tuxedo a little more playful.

Man wearing beige suede slip-on loafers with white tailored pants and no socks

Mediterranean luxury at a fair and accessible price is the MO at Aurelien. It boasts a whopping collection of summer-friendly loafers, crafted not just from soft suede but linen, too.

The focus on high-quality natural materials extends to bamboo linings and rubber soles inspired by deck shoes. These are elegant shoes made for jetties and jet-set lifestyles, but they’re practical too.

In terms of style, the Mediterranean theme continues with stripped-back, lighter tones that pair perfectly with chinos and shorts alike.

Gucci ad with man wearing black horsebit loafers, dark jeans and white shirt

The original and, some would say, the best luxury loafer brand, Gucci needs no introduction. The label’s famous loafers seamlessly blend both old-school glamour Gucci and envelope-pushing experimentalist Gucci.

It’s the signature horsebit loafers that everybody thinks of first, and fair enough. The style celebrated its 70th birthday in 2023 and it comes in an astonishing array of options. But the label also does tassels, buckles, monogram prints and modern maximalist loafers, too.

Minimalism is about the only thing Gucci doesn’t do.

A pair of luxury men's Bally black leather loafers with gold logo on stones outside

Founded in the mid-1800s, Bally is one of the world’s OG luxury shoe brands . Its focus on craft and refinement extends to this day, with a loafer collection that oozes sophistication.

The Swiss label does luxury loafers in practically every style, with a distinctive low profile and dependably excellent hides. Choose from gross-grain deer leather, smooth goat leather and more – even a pair of actual silk slippers if you’ve got the ankles for them.

Celine Homme

Man wearing burgundy Celine Homme chunky leather bit loafers with black socks and black pants

French luxury label Celine has roots in midcentury elegance, so it’s little wonder the brand does a distinctive line of loafers.

Currently under the creative direction of a menswear uber-influencer, the designer Hedi Slimane, you can see his stamp in the label’s slip-on collection, with chunky commando soles and 70s-style loafers with gold link chains where a horsebit detail might usually sit.

Proof that even a leather slip-on can be rock ‘n’ roll.

Man wearing black Prada leather loafers with silver logo adorned with black tailored cuffed pants and black socks

Like a lot of historic luxury labels , Prada today swings between classic designs that honor its century-long history, and avant-garde fashion statements that prove it’s still pushing boundaries.

Its collection of luxury loafers is a case in point. In one corner you have classic black penny styles in brushed leather. In the other, you’ll find loafers in the label’s bold Monolith line, referencing sci-fi and cyberpunk with platform commando soles and an all-white design. Both, in their own way, are very, very Prada.

A pair of luxury Crockett & Jones suede penny loafers with shoe trees inserted

By their own admission, loafers are the most casual shoe to get the Goodyear-welted treatment at historic British shoemaker Crockett & Jones. They’re still fabulously well-made, of course, with the brand’s craftsmanship passed down since the 1800s.

It’s also a company that likes its loafers: there are dozens of styles to pick from and as well as choosing between suede or leather, penny or tassel, you can also read up on the shoes’ lasts – the foot-shape models that shoemakers use to determine the silhouette and proportions of their shoes.

Man wearing black leather Hermes loafers on feet sockless with black pants

It’s a name that’s synonymous with luxury leather goods , so of course Hermes does a line of excellent loafers. It’s another classic-but-baller brand, with proud logos emblems and design touches adorning its range. Who needs a horsebit loafer when you can have one with a chunky metallic buckle or a braided leather cord instead?

The leathers really are superlative, from grained calfskin to brushed suede goatskin that you could wrap a newborn in. And style-wise, the label is a little bit throwback with 70s-referencing narrow styles alongside more traditional loafers.

A pair of men's black leather fringed loafers by Our Legacy set on chair

One of the pioneering Scandi labels that pushed minimalistic menswear in the last 15 years, Our Legacy has been tiptoeing into more grungy territory in recent seasons.

Its loafers are a telltale sign of the design direction. Even on standard all-black designs, you’ll find maximalist touches like fringed tongues, chunky fringes and stacked heels.

Made with Goodyear-welted Vibram soles, they’re also as practical as they are eye-catching.

A pair of men's navy suede penny loafers by Cheaney

One of the most acclaimed made-in-England shoemakers, Cheaney has operated out of the same Northamptonshire factory since the late 1800s. There, it produces an extensive collection of Goodyear-welted penny loafers, with a classic-leaning collection rounded out with a few tassel styles and suede loafers finished in bold red or green hues.

Traditionally, leather loafers were the ‘smart’ ones and suede loafers were the ‘casual’ ones. Cheaney’s range shows how outdated that is, with both styles made to such exacting standards that you could wear them all (OK, most) with jeans, chinos or tailored trousers.

For a dark, masculine take on luxury loafers, check out Dior’s offering. The label, under the creative direction of Kim Jones, carries a certain weight, even when we’re talking about dainty slip-on shoes.

Dior loafers are almost all black, stoutly designed with shiny patent leather and embellished with chunky buckles or monogram patterns. Think rock stars and flamboyantly dressed vampires.

Man holding a pair of black and white spectator penny loafers with a blue printed scorpion on the toe by Duke & Dexter

Statement designs with chunky proportions or a throwback colorway gives Duke and Dexter’s loafers a retro feel, but they couldn’t be much more modern.

You’ll spot the British brand’s footwear adorning many a trendy Londoner’s toes, often worn with open shirts, vests and tailored pants. If the lounge lizard thing is your look, this is the brand for you.

Where else are you going to find loafers adorned with prints from Playboy or illustrations of vipers and scorpions?

Shop now: John Lewis

Man wearing black leather Versace loafers with gold metal branding sockless with black pants.

Few luxury labels are as proudly ostentatious as Versace. The Italian brand is renowned for its in-your-face logos, Medusa emblems and baroque prints. You’ll find all those things on its loafers and slippers, and much more besides.

If you want to turn up wearing slip-ons adorned with crystals arranged in a crocodile-skin pattern, then it’s Versace that you want to visit.

Dolce and Gabbana

Man wearing double denim outfit with white socks and white Dolce and Gabbana loafers with metal plate

Never knowingly unfabulous, Dolce and Gabbana is another luxury label that eschews conservative loafers for more out-there designs. Patchwork denim loafers? Yes indeed. Chunky loafers with commando loafers and gigantic buckles? Certainly. Satin embroidered slippers? But of course.

The Italian label is proud of its peacocking style. As long as you’re not going for subtlety, you’ll find something for you.

Man wearing chunky sole black leather Grenson loafers sockless with army green pants

Grenson mixes traditional craft and a contemporary approach to design that makes its loafers a little more modern than some of the other Northamptonshire shoemakers.

So alongside the timeless penny styles in black leather or brown suede, you’ll find trendy styles that introduce a commando sole or two-tone colorway.

You can still expect handcrafted finishing and Goodyear-welted construction, too.

Man in brown suit holding a pair of luxury Church's black leather penny loafers

Traditional, meticulous and very, very handsome, Church’s shoes are renowned the world over. The loafer collection is uncomplicated: city-slicker penny styles that bridge the gap between work and leisure.

Goodyear construction comes as standard but you’ll find modern touches, like rubber soles designed to keep you comfortable on your feet .

It’s part of the Prada Group today, but Church’s history dates back to 1870s Northamptonshire, from where the brand’s know-how and DNA were passed down.

Man wearing G.H. Bass brown leather penny loafers with off-white socks and navy tailored pants

One of the brands that can genuinely lay claim to creating the first loafers, G.H.Bass has produced its famous Weejuns loafers since 1936. Adapted from a type of Norwegian farm shoe, the Weejun became a staple of American college style and preppy uniforms.

Today, the styles take in dozens of variations and not just in the color of the leather and suede. You’ll find zebra prints, vegan leathers, collaborations with myriad other labels and more. A bona fide icon of menswear.

Man wearing Tod's black leather loafers with bright yellow socks and grey wool pants

It’s most famous for its driving shoes , but Tod’s loafers have a lot in common with its signature style. There’s sartorial Italian elegance in every fiber of its shoes: fairly minimalist in design but eye-catching nonetheless.

The loafer collection is huge: at the time of writing the label was selling 61 varieties, from jute-soled suede pennies to chunky styles on stacked soles. Somewhere in the middle is Tod’s bread and butter – classic, narrow loafers that make you feel like Marcello Mastroianni, even if you’re just heading to the office.

Man wearing brown suede Loake penny loafers with beige socks and blue turned up jeans

If affordable luxury is what you need, Loake is one of the most accessible brands in the stable of historic Northamptonshire shoemakers.

Smart-casual, collegiate penny loafers make up a sizeable portion of the offering, although Loake also does more dandy styles, including suede tassel styles.

Despite the affordable price tags, you’re still getting handmade shoes, Goodyear-welted construction and first-rate aftercare. Like a lot of the Northamptonshire set, the brand’s repair service will ensure your loafers are timeless in more ways than one.

The Absolute Best Loafers for Men, Based on Testing and Expert Reviews

"G.H. Bass is synonymous with the penny loafer and helped cement its place in classic American style. They’ve also managed to keep this timeless silhouette accessibly priced over the years," says Nordstrom Men’s Fashion Director, Jian DeLeon . Having been around since 1936, the Weejuns is the OG penny loafer style that still looks great today. In fact, our Gear & Commerce Editor has had them since 2020 and affirms that their craftsman-like construction can hold up even after years of wear. He highly recommends the all-black for more versatility in your loafer lineup simply because of how dressy, elegant, yet versatile they are. At under $150, it provides incredible value. An easy addition to your weekday uniform.

What Do Other Experts Say? " As the OG, Weejuns are an excellent choice for beginners venturing into this style. With their timeless silhouette, a wide array of styles, and true-to-size fit, Weejuns provide great value for your money ," says personal menswear stylist Turner Allen .

Donning a simple, elegant design that feels a tad more casual while still delivering plenty of style points, the Patnoflex loafer benefits from a leather lining and ergonomic footbed that offers incredible support for a dress shoe, and it's incredibly flexible—style-wise and physically—to boot. We have not felt any discomfort while being on our feet all day in them, standing or walking.

What Do Experts Say? " For a more modern take on a loafer, I love the Astorflex Patnoflex Loafer with its streamlined details and unfussy energy. It is the perfect stand-in for a dress sneaker that both elevates casual looks and perfectly compliments business casual. Handmade with environmentally responsible construction in Italy by 6th-generation shoemakers, they are a simple slip-on with a super soft feel which makes them highly wearable ," says personal stylist Stephanie Gisondi-Little .

Made with a foam footbed that delivers cushioning comfort and lightweight construction, these slip-on, barefoot-friendly loafers nail the balance between smart and casual to give us an everyday-friendly look that we have sported to run errands in, commute in, catch the plane in, etc.

What Do Experts Say? " These are the best choice if you're looking for some classy and trendy loafers. They can be used by both younger and older people, and you can combine them with tons of different styles. The best thing about these loafers is that they're extremely lightweight, and furthermore, the price is reasonable for such a quality product, " says Chris Laverty, m ovie fashion and design expert at Elemental Spot .

For a pair of moccasin-like driving loafers, these are extra dressy and look formal-ready. With a lightweight but tough outsole, they’re also extra commute- and travel-friendly and lean on the casual—and warm-weather-friendly—side. I like wearing them with chino shorts and short-sleeve shirts . I also love how soft and flexible the fabric of these loafers feels which really brings out the comfort while walking.

What Do Experts Say? "I usually like to pair chinos with these slip-on shoes in suede to keep the look laid-back without going overly casual... The high-quality fabrication makes them feel a bit more formal without sacrificing comfort ," says content creator and influencer Joe Weir .

The tassel loafer is a footwear icon. Dr. Martens' affordable, chunky, but still groovy iteration stays true to the Ivy style but brings out the casual flair and durability in a Goodyear welt construction. We love how rich the leather looks, how rugged the outsole is, and how the underfoot support will last all day.

What Do Experts Say? " I know Dr. Marten’s isn't where people usually look to buy loafers but these ones stand out. They're chunkier than a traditional loafer, which makes it a little more playful and the rubber sole improves comfort and mobility. Plus, Dr. Marten’s smooth, durable leather ensures the shoes can take a beating wear after wear, " says stylist Fred Kim .

Most loafers don’t look great with a tapestry of colors on them, but Marc Nolan uses a combination of plaid, pattern, and colors to create penny loafers that look fun—but by no means funky—for dressing up. We love that the style is a nice spin on the classic loafers, but the comfort is also just as impressive: the athletic rubber outsole and flexible memory foam insoles will ground your every step.

What Do Experts Say? " The two-tone color combo with high-quality leather and materials come at a great price point, with lots of styles to choose from, " says men's fashion and lifestyle influencer Leo Chan .

Rothy's recent foray into men's footwear wowed us with its sleek, upcycled shoes that look just as great as they feel, and its driving loafers are no exception. Stylish, comfortable, washable—yes, you heard that right—and extra grippy on the outsole, these are perhaps the best under-$200 loafers we've ever tested. They're knit from used plastic water bottles to feel like a second skin, and the dual-density insoles work with the sturdy outsole to provide underfoot support and balance. And yes, we've thrown them into the washing machine, and they came out as good as new.

What Do Experts Say? " Rothy’s driving loafer is a great sustainable option made from recycled plastic. Their shoes are washable and don’t require a break in period, " says stylist Alyssa Dineen .

For those looking to stand out sans looking loud, these fine suede Venetian loafers are a subtle flex. We love that they aren't too flashy, and they'll match a lot of what's already in your wardrobe. Scarosso even updates them with a flexible outsole that offers plenty of traction for long urban treks or hours next to your standing desk; and in our testing, the reinforced heel which offers a little extra height really elevates any fit to look more formal.

What Do Experts Say? " M ore comfortable than sneakers due to the rubber sole, these loafers have an elegant Belgian loafer design, can be dressed up or down... and look like the Loro Piana Summer Walk , " says men's fashion and lifestyle influencer Brian Chan .

Here we have a hybrid of tassel loafers, brogue dress shoes, and wing-tip style, making it one of the best dressy loafers we’ve ever worn. Its classy design speaks for its own and is perfect for formal and even tuxedo footwear. But their comfort is also one to beat: not only is the footbed fully cushioned for non-stop support when you stand or walk, but the outsole is also lightweight without compromising on grip.

What Do Experts Say? " I love the braid detail and the sheepskin leather that provides a mix of texture that really lends it to be dressed up or down. I can style this shoe with a suit for a more formal setting, or pair it with distressed denim rolled cuffed and white tube socks for a relaxed street style ," says wardrobe stylist Taylor Orear .

Driving loafer? Penny loafer? The answer is yes. M. Gemi’s ingenious design combines the summer laidback panache of moccasin driving shoes with the classic design of the penny loafer to take the guesswork out of your “What type of loafers look best on me?” concern. We love that it’s incredibly lightweight and barefoot-friendly, even for walking. Our favorite part however is the oval toe which offers a comfortable fit and no-break-in-needed wear right out of the box.

What Do Experts Say? " M. Gemi’s Pastoso Uomo loafer is a classic Italian leather penny loafer style. The leather is soft and easy to wear. They also have a few colors that come with a contrasting sole which makes them interesting, " says stylist Alyssa Dineen .

Sanders x Todd Snyder Edwin Loafer

Edwin Loafer

Aside from getting that penny loafer form in spades, these smooth loafers come with a durable, flexible outsole that absorbs impact and offers excellent traction when we walk. Our favorite part is that the suede upper will easily mold to your feet, meaning no need for breaking in—you will wear it right from the get-go. Lastly, the full Goodyear welt construction makes sure that these loafers will last till the end of time.

What Do Experts Say? " Edwin Loafer is the perfect summer staple and an example of the collaboration's practical-meets-refined approach. The sole allows flexibility and the lighter shades of suede work for the summer weather ," says stylist Melina Kemph .

Beckett Simonon Bernard Tassel Loafers

Bernard Tassel Loafers

Crafted from full-grain calfskin leather sourced from a golf-rated tannery in Italy, these loafers exude classic style. Artisanal features like a Blake stitch construction and a Vachetta leather lining move these loafers into the upper echelon of footwear, all the while staying surprisingly reasonable in price.

What Do Experts Say? " Beckett Simonon only uses leather-certified gold by the Leather Working Group, including the water-resistant suede used in the Bernard Tassel Loafer. Handcrafted in Bog0ta, Columbia by expert shoemakers, this is a dress shoe that can be resoled again and again ," says Style Writer Brad Lanphear .

Suitsupply Light Brown Slip-On

Light Brown Slip-On

Tested by our editors as a pair of business casual shoes, we’ve found that this brown suede simply doesn’t miss—simultaneously sophisticated yet easygoing, making it one of the most versatile shoes in the game. The style can complement any fit, and the design is not busy or distracting for office dress codes. We were also impressed by their construction which is lightweight and slip-resistant.

What Do Experts Say? " Constructed of high-quality calf leather, this material will wear well over time with the right care. The beautiful light brown shade is perfect for year-round wear and styles well with many colors within a wardrobe. Look for something like this pair, with a simple design, which is a timeless pick to invest in ," says personal wardrobe stylist Grace Thomas .

VINNYS Le Club Snaffle Bit Loafer

Le Club Snaffle Bit Loafer

We'd be remiss not to include the instantly recognizable loafer style—the horse bit, which has been a go-to design for C-level executives. And these horse bit loafers by VINNYS prove that you needn’t spend close to four digits to cop a pair of formal-looking loafers. We love that they look streamlined in a traditional yet classy form and are made with brushed hardware to spruce up your business casual fit.

What Do Experts Say? " Vinny’s is a younger footwear label out of Copenhagen founded by talented Black designer Virgil Nicholas. While they make more conservative options, I’m a fan of their more fashion-forward colors and materials ," says Nordstrom Men’s Fashion Director, Jian DeLeon .

Go Tour Leather Casual Slip On Loafers

Leather Casual Slip On Loafers

Leather loafers for under $50? No wonder Go Tour's slip-ons have been an Amazon best-seller. It's also received five-star reviews for its soft interior that's easy to pack in your carry-on luggage. In our testing, we found them super easy to slip on and off, light and flexible enough to walk in, and soft enough to wear without socks. Though at this price point, they haven't lasted as long as other more premium loafers we've tested, so proceed with caution.

Bruno Marc Moccasin Loafers

Moccasin Loafers

Under $40 but ultra-mighty, these lightweight moccasin loafers bring style and substance to the table at an affordable price point. Its outsole is textured to provide a good grip, and the upper needs no break-in period to bring out comfort. And how about that unmistakable driving loafer look? We have colleagues who wear these year-round beyond warm-weather days, in the office, at the bar, or on vacations, so the comfort and versatility of wearing them on the go are tried and true.

Amberjack The Loafer

The Loafer

Aiming for the utmost support and style, these loafers are packed with performance feats—water-repellent upper, soft breathable lining, supportive foam arch, and a hybrid sole that brings together the flexibility of sneakers and the durability of boots. Having owned these for a few months, I find them to be the most comfortable loafers I’ve ever tested. With an athletic design meant to let your feet move in comfort, you’ll want to sport Amberjack’s loafers all day long and wear them to face anything on your way.

Rockport Palmer Venetian Loafer

Palmer Venetian Loafer

With a classic Venetian loafer upper and a modern polyurethane outsole, these loafers do not compromise on either style or function. If you’re always on the go, these fit like a glove to give you all-day comfort, no matter the mileage you take.

We also love how effortless these are as slip-on shoes to save time and energy before heading out, and the sole with lightweight shock absorption makes these loafers one of our favorite shoes to commute to the office while carrying heavy.

Aldi Is Selling Cute $13 Boat Shoes That Are So Similar to a Hey Dude Style 5x the Price

  • Author: Alani Vargas

Parade aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

Boat shoes were big in the late 2000s and early 2010s, and they went well with the preppy craze spurred on by brands like Abercrombie & Fitch. Even if you weren’t a boating enthusiast, everyone was wearing these back then. And even if Y2K’s preppy styles aren’t *fully* back yet, boat shoes are still a practical and cute option. Lucky for you, Aldi is dropping some trendy canvas loafers that are very much boat shoes that look like a style from the viral brand, Hey Dude. And they’re a fifth of the price.

From June 5 through June 11, Aldi stores will sell the Crane Men's or Ladies Canvas Loafer in their Aldi Finds section for only $12.99. They come in sizes 10-12 for Men and 6-9 for Ladies and look pretty stylish for a $13 pair of shoes. These loafers have the classic longer boat shoe look, with a sneaker-like bottom and structured top. This is made with a “lightweight canvas,” as the name suggests, and the bottom soles are ridged for better traction.

These do come with laces, but they’re bungee laces, which are great for slipping shoes on and off while also allowing you to tighten them if needed. Like most of Aldi’s clothing or shoe items that feature men's and women’s styles, all colors aren’t available for both men's and women’s versions. In this case, the Crane Ladies’ Canvas Loafer comes in Light Grey and Aqua, As for the Crane Men’s Loafers, they come in Navy.

Hey Dude’s Wendy Stretch Canvas  loafer, which are $64.99 and come in a handful of colors. They are made with a canvas upper part that is “comfortably cool” and elastic laces, like Aldi’s, along with a ridged bottom sole. Even the top of the shoe's structure looks similar. That being said, Hey Dude’s shoes do have a removable foam insole, which is a plus.

Of course, the Hey Dude canvas loafers have their logo on the back, but other than that, they’re nearly the same as Aldi’s. And for $13, Aldi’s Crane Canvas Loafers are a good choice if you want a lightweight, comfortable shoe that comes in cute colors and scratches that early 2000s itch.
