Yachts For Sale In Savannah

Savannah, in Georgia’s Chatham County, was named by Conde Nast Traveler magazine’s readers as one of the “world’s friendliest cities” for its quintessential southern hospitality and charm known worldwide. Savannah invokes images of ghostly moss draped oak trees and exquisitely beautiful squares surrounded by cobblestone streets and historic buildings. Indeed, Savannah has a rich history, founded in 1733 by General James E. Oglethorpe whose plan for urban development and growth; a grid system of green-space squares buffering residential areas, created colonial Georgia’s first planned city. In 1966, downtown Savannah became the largest National Landmark District in the US. Savannah was originally designed with 24 squares following The Oglethorpe Plan and now form the Historic District.

Only two have been lost over the years to urban sprawl. Calhoun Square, designed in1851, is the only square with all original historic buildings remaining. Ellis Square, designed in 1733, was once the site of the Old City Market, where merchants sold plantation crops and wares. It was lost to urban sprawl, but recently recovered and restored. Franklin Square (1791), named after Ben Franklin, was also known as Water Tower Square as it was the site of the city’s water tower for many years. Another of note is Chippewa Square (1815) commemorating the Battle of Chippewa in the War of 1812. It also features a bronze stature of General James E. Oglethorpe and was the site of movie, Forrest Gump’s bus stop scenes. Today the squares are surrounded by shops, galleries, cafes, restaurants, hotels, private residences, businesses and much more in various architectural styles. Many feature historical statuary and other landmarks enabling visitors to connect with the city’s history.

Today Savannah is arranged in four distinct Districts. The Historic District downtown area features cobblestone streets, landmarks, 18th century houses, museums restaurants and the 22 remaining park squares. The Victorian District features Victorian-style homes built in the 1800s and is primarily a residential neighborhood. The Starland District is lively with art and innovation; loaded with galleries, boutiques, entertainment venues and restaurants. Moon River is a district of salt marshes, maritime forest trails, the historic Gullah Geechee Oystering Community; the District for a lowcountry experience in history and ecotourism.

Tybee Island, Savannah’s beach, is only 20 minutes from downtown. Besides the beaches, eco-kayak tours and sunset cruises are available. Or visit the Tybee Island Lighthouse Station and Museum. The popular ocean pier with a viewing pavilion is a short walk from Fannie’s on the Beach, a restaurant with sidewalk tables or the upstairs second-story patio with a view of the pier. It features a huge menu with something for everyone. The popular Crab Shack has a huge patio overlooking the marsh. Visitors can enjoy a lowcounty boil in a casual setting. The North Beach Bar & Grill near Tybee Island Lighthouse is a quaint islands-style “beachside shack” serving Caribbean inspired dishes. The Deck Beachbar & Kitchen, serving casual fare, is the only direct beachfront restaurant on the island. Gerald’s Pig & Shrimp is a roadside eatery featuring award-winning BBQ and seafood. Enjoy fresh-squeezed limeade at this outdoor restaurant and bar. A-J’s Dockside Restaurant is located on Tybee’s Back River Beach—a perfect spot for great food and sunsets, and to watch for dolphins!

Boaters have the advantage of exploring and enjoying Savannah’s vast marshlands, rivers and creeks filled with marine life, from the water. Cruisers on the Great Loop have many marina choices along the many waters of Savannah. The Bull river Marina is a 100-slip full-service marina located in the salt marshes of Wilmington Island. The sheltered harbor offers daily, weekly, monthly deep-water dockage rentals. Lazaretto Creek Marina is family-owned and operated since 1992, with year-round dockage, wet slips, fuel and much more, is the closest marina to the Atlantic Ocean. Isle of Hope Marina, founded in 1926, is minutes from Savannah’s historical downtown and located in a very picturesque area with some of the most beautiful residences. The marina features 4000’ of concrete docks, 600’ deep-water face docks able to accommodate megayachts, fuel, pump-out service, loaner cars and bicycles for guests and much more.

Thunderbolt Marina is located on the Wilmington River, just outside of Savanna. The marina has 750’ of floating dock space available. Amenities include laundry facilities, shower, restrooms and fresh donuts delivered each morning to your boat! Morningstar Marinas Bahia Bleu has a 500’ transient dock, wet slips, fuel, and easy access to downtown Savannah, the AICW and Wilmington River. Other notable marinas are, Hogan’s Marina with transient docking, Coffee Bluff Marina on Savannah’s southside, a full-service marina with wet slip rentals, Ft McAllister Marina, renovated in 2008 and considered to be the finest in Georgia, located next to award-winning Fish Tales restaurant, and Savannah Bend Marina.

Sail Savannah was born out of the desire to give everyone a glimpse of the Lowcountry that can only be seen from the water. Whether it is sailing alongside dolphins, seeing the marsh creatures in their natural habitat, or listening to the water calmly lap against the hull, we have the perfect charter to take you to uncharted territory.

Your trip will be aboard the good ship Kestrel, a 30’ Catalina 30, which has earned its place as one of the most popular yachts in America. She glides through the water effortlessly in the salty air, making a great sail for a first-timer or old salt alike. We invite you to hop aboard, sit back, and relax as we show you the best of Savannah while sharing tales of the waters that surround it.

Our starting rate includes a 2-hour sail for up to 6 guests. Prices may vary depending on the date and time. You can find the exact price for your trip by clicking the book button to view our real-time calendar.

The 5-hour tour is hands down the best way to spend a day! They have a private island with tons of fun things to do! We’ve done this twice this year and both captains we had were amazing!

I took the Wildlife Refuge Excursion with Capt. Peter Pearson. If you are looking for a small boat tour, this is it. We spent 3 hours on the water. After turning at Fort Jackson and going under the first bridge, we didn't see another boat until about 15 minutes before returning to the dock. It is so peaceful and beautiful cruising through the wildlife refuge. Captain Peter has a good eye and was able to help me see the wildlife that I probably would have missed if he hadn't pointed them out. He is very friendly and knowledgeable about the river. I highly recommend this trip!

Celebrating our 15th Anniversary in Savannah we decided to take the Outside Outback tour to explore more. Non-swimmer & adventurer, I surprisingly dropped all my fears and had an amazing experience on the water. It was BREATH TAKING! Captain Boo had a great sense of humor and was very knowledgeable and charismatic. I can’t imagine it going so well without him.

First let me say, we are residents of Savannah and in the hospitality industry too. Hubby and I had a Monday off and had been very interested in our local port. We NEVER get tired of seeing these large container ships making their way down the Savannah River. Peter was our guide and absolutely incredible! We were able to learn so much about our local port, how important the port is to our local and national economy, and how complex this entire system is! Another plus we didn't expect? Seeing a baby sea turtle in the river, along with a bald eagle and other wildlife. We are now referring this tour to our neighbors, visitors, and family. Even the little ones will love this tour. One of the best tours EVER in Savannah! Book it now! You won't be disappointed!

We took the 7-hour Ultimate Lowcountry Day. Captain Peter made sure we had a great day from the time he picked us up at the port to when he dropped us off. Seeing the dolphins was very high on my priority list and Captain Peter knew exactly where to take us. Boy did he come through! We probably saw 20-30 dolphins with many of them up close. He also made sure my kids had a great time including tubing, kayaking, and jumping off a platform. He made sure we were all safe and still made it so much fun for them. Overall, this is a tour I’d highly recommend to anybody!

Boo was very informative and patient with our group. We were impressed by his knowledge of local history and his humorous and engaging manner. We all greatly enjoyed the tour of Daufuskie Island and would highly recommend this company and captain.

I loved this tour! Such a cool way to see the city. Going into the port, seeing all the big ships, and learning more about their operations was fascinating. My tour guide Ryan Pirkle was very informative. I have been on many tours in Savannah but he definitely taught me things I had never learned about Savannah in any other tours. Plus it was great to get out on the water to beat the heat. I highly recommend this tour!

A Savannah Itinerary for Every Traveler

Experience craft cocktails, coastal gardens, and more in this Georgia city.

a man and woman walking down a street with trees and buildings

A little dose of Southern hospitality goes a long way, and the charming city of Savannah has got that in spades. No matter your vacation goals, it has an ideal itinerary that'll fit the bill. Read on to discover what to do, where to stay, and what to eat, whatever type of traveler you may be.

For the Gourmand

The Olde Pink House is a Savannah staple, set in a Colonial mansion dating back to 1771. Choose between the fried-green-tomato salad with applewood bacon, sweet-corn cream, shrimp and grits, and the buffalo-shrimp tacos—then top it off with a piece of pecan pie for dessert. Set in a 19th-century warehouse, Vic's on the River features classic Southern cooking like crawfish beignets, pecan fried flounder, fried chicken, and Old Bay French fries.

The DeSoto Savannah, a hotel in the heart of the Historic District known for hosting four presidents and many a celebrity throughout its 130-year history, is where you'll find the popular Edgar's Proof & Provision . Expect craft cocktails and chef-inspired fare—sipping private-label Edgar's Truth bourbon is almost a rite of passage in Savannah (or you can choose one of the other 120-plus available whiskies).

For the Relaxationist

Savannah Riverboat Cruises has two riverboats each with two climate-controlled decks and an open-air top deck, as well as narrated tours of the harbor. You'll sail down to Old Fort Jackson and back into town over one and a half hours, with plenty of great photo opps of the city's historic riverfront and skyline along the way.

The Eastern Wharf is a walkable 54-acre gathering place with community parks and abundant green space, just perfect for a chill afternoon. Stop for a bite to eat or a refreshing drink (Honeysuckle Gelato is a local favorite, as is Bar Julian , Savannah's tallest rooftop bar), book a rejuvenating treatment at Woodhouse Spa , or take a calming floral workshop at Syd Nichole Fashion + Flowers . And the Park at Eastern Wharf is where you'll find community concerts, yoga classes, cornhole games, and more.

Perhaps the most photographed landmark of Savannah is the Parisian-inspired fountain in Forsyth Park . It's easy to spend hours meandering all 30 acres, marveling at the iconic Spanish moss hanging from the live oak trees, staring at the gorgeous historic homes, and listening to the singing birds. The Garden of Fragrance is an especially nice spot to stop to smell the roses—as it was especially created for the blind to stimulate the olfactory sense. There are also two basketball courts, a canine playground, tennis courts, volleyball nets, and a playing field should you want to kick a soccer ball around. Or visit the farmers market, held every Saturday morning.

For the Outdoor Enthusiast

aerial view of the historic tybee island light, as its officially known, taken at dusk

Head over to Tybee Island , a small coastal community about 18 miles from Historic Savannah that's known for its wide beaches and still-functioning 18th-century lighthouse. Go ahead and climb its 178 steps (it's Georgia's oldest and tallest lighthouse), as you'll be treated to a view of the entire island from up top. Or take a guided kayak tour with Sea Kayak Georgia to check out the surrounding coastal area. To really see the whole island, rent a bicycle from Tim's Bike and Beach Gear —the roads are bike-friendly, and there are plenty of scenic trails to keep you busy.

One of Savannah's best-kept secrets is Skidaway Island State Park , thanks to its miles of nature trails that run through lush forests and salt marshes. There's a scenic campground here for hooking up an RV, or you can rent camper cabins complete with screened porches, air-conditioning, a shower, a kitchen, and bedrooms (you'll just need to bring your own linens, dishes, and cooking utensils). Watch for deer, fiddler crabs, raccoons, egrets, and other birds with binoculars borrowed from the park's interpretive center.

Spend a day at the Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens and you'll quickly understand why 100,000 visitors flock to this attraction annually. There are a dozen separate gardens on-site, including the Formal Garden (actually four Italian-Renaissance-style gardens, off the back of the visitor center), the Rivers of Iris (with its peak bloom in April and early May), and the Pollinator Garden (where from spring through fall, you'll find bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies).

For the Culture Lover

One of the most interesting aspects of Savannah's rich history is the Gullah Geechee culture, a community of descendants of enslaved Africans who have lived in the area for generations. Learn about their language, traditions, religion, and cuisine from residents who grew up in this community at the Pin Point Heritage Museum , located in a refurbished crab-and-oyster factory on the riverbank.

One great way to get a feel for Savannah is via self-guided or guided tour , where you can peruse cobblestone streets, the riverfront, and well-preserved historic architecture.

Or take the Savannah Trolley Tour , an open-air hop-on/hop-off trolley ride. There are more than 100 points of interest along the 15 stops (it covers all nine miles of the Historic District and the Victorian District, known for its historic homes and elegant architecture), including the Colonial Park Cemetery, the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, Forsyth Park, Lucas Theatre, and City Market. Don't miss Jones Street, the prettiest in Savannah, thanks to its mixture of Federal-, Italianate-, and Romanesque Revival-style homes and its massive, evocative moss-draped live oak trees.

For a hotel stay at one of the most architecturally stunning properties in town, choose The Gastonian , an award-winning bed and breakfast near Forsyth Park. This grand mansion and its impeccable staff deliver Southern charm and hospitality at every turn. Each of the 17 rooms has a clawfoot tub and a working fireplace. You'll have a gourmet made-to-order breakfast each morning, and afternoon hors d'oeuvres and wine are served from 5 to 6:30 p.m daily.

Letter: Quit dragging protection for North Atlantic right whales

Sharks circle a dead North Atlantic right whale calf discovered off the coast of Tybee Island, Georgia.

This letter is from Marty Susie of Wilmington Island

Our Georgia coastline, a place of beauty that draws us to live, work, and play, carries with it a profound responsibility: to protect this environment and all its inhabitants. The North Atlantic right whale , with only approximately 356 documented individuals remaining, faces imminent extinction due primarily to boat strikes (blunt-force trauma or propeller cuts) and entanglement in fishing gear.

Since 2017, NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) has reported at least 41 right whale fatalities, including two recent deaths near Tybee Island. Among these whales, fewer than 70 are reproductive females. Even a single unnatural death is a major blow to the species’ hope for survival.

In 2008, NOAA established the Vessel Speed Rule to safeguard these whales from these deadly collisions. In 2022, NOAA proposed tightening the maximum speed limit threshold, formerly for vessels as large as 65 feet, to affect those ships as small as 35 feet to enhance the right whale's protection. However, two years later, these rules are still pending finalization.

According to a recent SMN article , U.S. Rep. Buddy Carter (R-Savannah) introduced legislation in 2023 seeking to delay funding for enforcement, citing concerns for the coastal shipping economy. Nevertheless, the proposed rule includes exceptions addressing shipping industry concerns.

Without these badly needed updates to current regulations, the North Atlantic right whale could become the first large whale species to go extinct in the Atlantic Ocean in centuries. It is imperative that we urge our lawmakers to take immediate action to save these magnificent creatures from extinction.

Ex-Husband Starts Uncontrollable Blaze on a Georgia Boat in Disturbing Revenge Plot

An "evil, evil" man with a reported history of violence became the prime suspect in the double murder of Karen Barnes and Larry Ford aboard a liveaboard trawler.

yachts in savannah ga

A shocking double murder on a liveaboard trawler rocked those living around the wetlands of St. Mary’s River in Georgia. A quick-moving investigation by local and state authorities would not only lead to a suspect with a documented history of violence but a deadly face-off between them and an “evil, evil” killer.

How to Watch

Watch  Deadly Waters with Captain Lee  on Oxygen Saturdays at 9/8c and next day on Peacock.

It all began on August 12, 2012, on a blackwater river in the city of St. Mary’s, about 40 miles north of Jacksonville, Florida. Camden County dispatchers received what marine journalist Peter Swanson called a “haunting” 911 call at about 3:00 a.m., hearing the muffled moans and screams of an unknown person, as obtained and published by Deadly Waters with Captain Lee , airing Saturdays at 9/8c on Oxygen .

Though the caller provided no information, investigators traced the phone to the St. Mary’s Boat Yard off New Point Peter Road, according to Detective Misty Gilliland of the St. Mary’s Police Department.

What happened to Karen Barnes' boat?

“As I come to the middle of the causeway, all I could see was this blazing inferno in the river,” Gilliland said. “My stomach just sunk to the floor.”

The heat coming from the anchored vessel was so severe that responders could feel it from the shore, making it impossible to approach the boat safely. Without knowing the cause of the fire — and since water could have exacerbated the blaze — authorities had no choice but to wait for the fire to die.

It was clear that, if anyone was on board, there were no survivors.

Karen Barnes featured on Deadly Waters With Captain Lee episode 107

“If someone was living on this vessel, it’s essentially like a house fire on water, and there’s the possibility of multiple victims onboard,” said series host  Captain Lee .

Authorities soon learned the 37-foot houseboat was a customized Great Harbour Trawler named “Premium Time.” Later confirmed by the boat’s H.I.N. (hull identification number), authorities gleaned the boat belonged to 55-year-old woman Karen Barnes. According to marina locals, she’d recently been spending time with her friend Larry Ford.

As the boat continued to burn, police attempted to contact Ford to no avail. By 6:30 a.m., three hours after responders were called to the fire, the flames had settled enough for authorities to cut the anchor and bring the boat back to the dock.

The Crime Scene of the Fire featured on Deadly Waters With Captain Lee Episode 107

“The fire wasn’t fully extinguished until about 12:15 that afternoon,” Gilliland told Deadly Waters. “Quite a long time.”

G.B.I. (Georgia Bureau of Investigation) Special Agent in Charge Cathy Mausolf said that by then, there was “virtually nothing left of the boat.”

Who was on the Premium Time boat?

On the afternoon of the blaze, investigators discovered burned bone fragments on the boat, which were sent to Savannah, Georgia, for a post-mortem examination. DNA testing confirmed the remains belonged to Karen Barnes.

Barnes’ sister, Lesha White, told Deadly Waters that news of her sister’s death was “heart-wrenching,” a sentiment shared by those who knew the decedent best. Susan Graham, a close friend and member of the Great Harbour Trawler community, said the news left everyone “in shock.”

According to White, Barnes came from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and was the oldest of four children. She’d joined White in St. Mary’s, where the younger sister helped her find work as an event planner.

Karen Barnes featured on Deadly Waters With Captain Lee episode 107

“She loved the beach; she loved to go looking for shells, kayaking, swimming,” said White. “She loved all of it.”

Meanwhile, investigators — still sifting through the boat’s ash — found shell casings on board, leading them to believe that Barnes was shot to death. At the time, they were still looking for her male friend Larry Ford, who — according to Swanson — was a boat technician who frequented the waters of southeast Georgia.

“Larry was just the nicest man; just real laid-back,” said White. “He would help Karen, and she would take him food. He just kinda was there [and] would help anybody with whatever they need[ed] done.”

A medical examiner ultimately contacted investigators, informing them that they had bones belonging not only to Barnes but to Larry Ford, too.

Who was Karen Barnes’ former husband David Trauger?

Locals described Ford as a great guy, but according to witnesses, Barnes was recently “concerned” about her ex-husband, 67-year-old David Trauger, according to Det. Gilliland. The couple had only divorced that very summer.

Barnes and Trauger met at a restaurant in 2009 when Barnes still worked as an event planner, journalist Peter Swanson told Deadly Waters.

“David Trauger, he had an insurance company in Pennsylvania,” said Swanson. “He was financially well off.”

Trauger already owned Premium Time when meeting Barnes, a trawler worth more than half a million dollars, thanks to its customized interior and an additional tender (a small boat used to transport people between the primary boat and shore).

The couple married only months after meeting, and according to White, Trauger’s financial status allowed Barnes to stop working.

But the honeymoon stage didn’t last long.

“Karen was good to David, but David was an alcoholic,” Graham told Deadly Waters. “Karen did say she would never have gotten involved with him if she knew he was an alcoholic.”

White said when Trauger drank, he was “an evil, evil, hateful person.”

Evidence points to David Trauger in Karen Barnes' death

Loved ones and records helped investigators discover Trauger reportedly had jealous fits of rage and went as far as to injure Barnes’ arm so that she required a cast.

In 2012, not long before the double homicide, Barnes reported that Trauger tried to run their vehicle off the road as a form of domestic violence, according to divorce attorney Melissa Cruthirds.

“At that point, Karen came to our firm to file a divorce against her husband, David Trauger,” Cruthirds told Deadly Waters. “She had been in this abusive relationship with David for several years, and she wanted out.”

Both parties worked it out so that Trauger would keep his homes, properties, and business while Barnes was awarded alimony and Premium Time. But the alleged abuse continued, and even after they split, Trauger allegedly stalked Barnes when both resided on Jekyll Island, Georgia, about 50 miles on the coast north of St. Mary’s.

There was a “turning point,” Det. Gilliland said, after a June 2012 incident when Trauger allegedly attempted to break into the Premium Time, though Barnes had changed the locks. The boat was supposed to have been Trauger’s retirement plan, and when Barnes was awarded the trawler, he went into “a downward spiral.”

“He really wanted his boat back,” said Gilliland.

Around that time, Barnes met Jekyll Island regular Larry Ford, and he presumably hoped to help Barnes by giving her a handgun for self-defense, a firearm never found with the boat. Ford also helped Barnes take Premium Time to St. Mary’s in an attempt to hide from the embattled ex-husband, and he lived nearby to make her feel safe.

“They selected the waters out front of St. Mary’s Marine Services’ Boatyard because it was a good place to hide,” Swanson told Deadly Waters. “But David somehow manages to find them.”

The stalking continued, with documented reports that Trauger followed Barnes in a grocery store and allegedly boarded the Premium Time illegally to tamper with the boat’s steering. According to Atty. Cruthirds, Barnes applied for a stay-away order, but the sheriff’s office couldn’t locate Trauger to serve him with papers.

Barnes’ sister, Lesha White, said Barnes stayed with her for her protection just before the double murder, stating she had “a bad feeling” on Aug. 12, 2012, when Barnes left to retrieve some clothes.

What happened to David Trauger?

Multiple agencies helped search for Trauger, the sole suspect in the double homicide, and considered him armed and dangerous. Media published the suspect’s face, and a B.O.L.O. (Be on the Lookout) was issued for Trauger and his vehicle. Eventually, they found Trauger’s truck parked at a local gas station.

Responders located a trail in the woods behind the gas station. They followed it to several personal items, including a wallet and a bloody gun holster, all of which were connected to Trauger.

Searches continued through the day and resumed the next day, though there was no sign of the murder suspect. But on Aug. 15, 2012, at around 9:00 a.m., neighbors from a nearby apartment complex reported they spotted Trauger, who was allegedly staying there.

By the time Det. Misty Gilliland and the others retreated from the forest and arrived at the complex, law enforcement had the place surrounded. Soon, Trauger stepped outside.

Trauger’s response was to draw a handgun and fire one shot in law enforcement’s direction, prompting G.B.I. authorities to fire back, subsequently killing Trauger on the scene. According to overwhelming evidence found after Trauger’s death — including numerous suicide letters and last-wish memos — it was determined that Trauger’s death was suicide by cop.

White told Deadly Waters that she was “disappointed” that her sister’s killer died before hearing the impact the murders had on her life

What investigators believed happened on the night of the Barnes/Ford murders

On Aug. 16, 2012, three days into the investigation, detectives found a Jon boat — a small, flat-bottomed boat commonly used in swamp regions — belonging to Trauger. It had been spray painted black, and had several cinderblocks and gas cans found on board.

“He put cinder blocks in the front of the boat, and this is believed to have been a way of keeping the boat from slapping as it was being pushed through the water, and thus, drawing attention to it,” Swanson explained.

Investigators believed Trauger operated the Jon boat to Premium Time before breaking his way in and shooting Barnes and Ford. At some point, Barnes called 911, but it was already too late. Trauger then doused the boat with gasoline and set fire to Premium Time.

According to White, loved ones “lost a really wonderful person.”

Charleston, S.C. based dredging contractor Marinex Construction has been awarded a $22,826,500 firm-fixed-price contract from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to perform maintenance dredging in Savannah, Ga.

Marinex was one of two bidders for the project.

The work in the Savannah Harbor deep draft navigation project is scheduled to be completed by July 11, 2025

Up to four million cubic yards of material may be dredged, and dredged sediments will be placed in upland confined disposal areas owned by various state and local entities along the Savannah River, according to the Corps.

Orlando Montoya: Hello and welcome to the Georgia Today podcast from GPB News. Today is Friday, July 12; I'm Orlando Montoya. On today's episode, a former Georgia insurance commissioner is convicted of money laundering and health care fraud. Savannah steps up their renewable energy efforts with the installation of solar panels in some municipal buildings, and Georgia joins a nationwide effort to save bees. These stories and more coming up on this edition of Georgia Today .

Orlando Montoya: Former Georgia Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine has been sentenced to more than three and a half years in prison for conspiring to commit health care fraud and money laundering. U.S. District Judge Steve Jones sentenced Oxendine this morning after the Johns Creek Republican pleaded guilty to the scheme in March. Keri Farley is the FBI's Atlanta special agent in charge.

Keri Farley: John Oxendine was motivated more by personal greed than his duty to patients and the citizens of Georgia, whom he used to represent. Not only do the former state insurance commissioner line his pockets offer unnecessary tests, he also directed another to lie to federal agents to try and cover up the fraud. Health care fraud is not victimless. Schemes like this increase health care costs for everyone and violate the trust of all patients.

Orlando Montoya: Oxendine also was ordered to pay $760,000 in restitution. He served as the elected state insurance commissioner from 1995 to 2011. He ran for governor in 2010, but lost the Republican primary.

Orlando Montoya: Atlanta's Fulton County has approved a plan for an independent monitor to oversee this year's general election. The county Board of Registration and Elections yesterday considered two monitor proposals and voted to accept one and to reject the other. Georgia's most populous county has had a history of voting problems and was a focus of former President Donald Trump's efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss. This will be Fulton County's second consecutive presidential election conducted under the watch of an independent monitor. The proposal now goes to the State Election Board for approval.

Orlando Montoya: The sheriff in Fulton County spoke out today against a decision by the county commission not to build a new county jail. GPB's Amanda Andrews reports, Sheriff Patrick Labat calls the move "shortsighted".

Amanda Andrews: The Board of Commissioners voted 4 to 3 this week to spend $300 million on renovations for the jail, instead of building a new $2 billion facility. Overpopulation issues at the facility contributed to 10 inmate deaths last year. Sheriff Patrick Labat says officers are working to keep people safe, but there have to be improvements at the jail.

Patrick Labat: It doesn't matter if we spend $1 billion, if we don't move toward the future with respect to not just how we treat people, but the increase in technology, a forward-thinking process, people are going to continue to die.

Amanda Andrews: The facility is under investigation by the Department of Justice and a state Senate subcommittee. For GPB News, I'm Amanda Andrews.

Solar farm

Orlando Montoya: More than a dozen municipal buildings in Savannah soon will feature solar panel arrays. GPB's Benjamin Payne reports the city is pursuing an ambitious goal for renewable energy.

Benjamin Payne: Savannah council members on Thursday unanimously approved a $5.75 million expansion of its existing solar contract with Atlanta-based Cherry Street Energy. The new deal will add about 1.25 MW of solar capacity across 14 city-owned properties that roughly double Savannah's previous contract with Cherry Street Energy, which was first signed two years ago. Alderman Nick Palumbo:

Nick Palumbo: Not only does it pay for itself, but it returns a $1.4 million net benefit to residents here to the city. So super honored to keep the ball rolling as we pursue our clean energy goals.

Benjamin Payne: That goal is to generate 100% of the city's electricity through renewable energy by 2035. For GPB News, I'm Benjamin Payne in Savannah.

Orlando Montoya: All westbound lanes of Interstate 16 just west of Savannah will be closed this weekend after a vehicle carrying an excavator struck a bridge yesterday afternoon. The Georgia Department of Transportation is inspecting and repairing the bridge at Chatham Parkway. The bridge remains closed in both directions. The agency says the I-16 westbound detour is expected to end by Monday morning, but the Chatham Parkway reopening is yet to be determined.

Orlando Montoya: The state ended its 2024 fiscal year with lower tax revenues than the previous year. The Georgia Department of Revenue said today the state brought in a little less than $33 billion during the fiscal year that ended in June. That was down one half of 1% compared to fiscal year 2023 — not accounting for the state not collecting gas taxes for more than half of the last fiscal year. When that's taken into account, net revenues were down 3.4%. Georgia has plenty of cushion to weather the downturn with a $16 billion budget surplus.

Bees: asset-mezzanine-16x9

Orlando Montoya: Pollinators like bees are critical to our food supply, but many farmers rely on pesticides, which can kill bees. To help beekeepers and farmers work together, Georgia has become the 25th state to join a nationwide online mapping tool aimed at reducing pesticide drift from farms to beehives. Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tyler Harper says the tool, FieldWatch, helps farmers make more informed application decisions.

Tyler Harper: It helps us address those off target drift applications and ensure that we have a collaborative effort at knowing where each of us are to continue to allow us to be successful across the entire spectrum of agriculture in our state.

Orlando Montoya: Although use of the free registry is voluntary, many precision agriculture platforms include it in their software packages. Georgia's participation in FieldWatch is part of a larger yearslong program to reduce pesticide drift.

Orlando Montoya: Oglethorpe Power is going all in on natural gas as a source of electrical generation. The utility, based in Tucker, east of Atlanta, announced plans yesterday to build two new natural gas projects in Monroe and Talbot counties, both west of Macon. Oglethorpe power serves 38 electric cooperatives and says the new facilities represent more than $2 billion in investments. The company says the expansion is needed to keep up with increasing electrical demand.

Orlando Montoya: To a lot of people, a day at the beach is an essential summer activity, but oceanfront isn't available to everyone in Georgia. Well, you can still find a beach to have fun at no matter where you are, if you know where to look. GPB's Taleen Hanna brings us this audio postcard from the beach at Lake Tobesofkee in Bibb County.

Bianca Fields: My name is Bianca Fields.

And you gotta make sure you hold your breath, my dear.

This is pretty much why we moved to Georgia. Fresh air. I feel safe here with me and the kids. Peaceful. Yeah. They like sandcastles, playing in the water. So right now where they want to do multi levels today. So we're going to try to get an entrance going into two tiers, a two tier castle, today. That is what they're aiming for.

Gabrielle Evans: My name is Gabrielle Evans. This is my first time here. I didn't know about this place and I got down here, and it's seeming to be very fun. I come in here because it's a cool vibe, it's fun, and it's just a nice place to spend time with family.

Jeff Scarborough: My name is Jeff Scarborough. We just come out with the family, typically, and the kids, and they get to jet ski and boat with us, so it's a good time.

Steve McConnell: I'm Steve McConnell. I mean, I'm here with a legend. I can't — I mean, that's who he is. He's a legend.

Taleen Hannah: You guys jet ski together?

Steve McConnell:  Not on the same one.

Keri Farley: Do you guys race or anything?

Jeff Scarborough: We go out and pleasure ride. That's all.

Jaden Wright: My name is Jaden Wright.

Ameris Hobson-Farris: My name is Ameris Hobson-Farris.

Jeff Scarborough: We're with the family right now so we're having a good little time. We chillin'.

Ameris Hobson-Farris: It's, you know, it's nice.

Bianca Fields: It's a hidden gem, definitely. It's worth — wherever you're coming from, it's worth the drive. Wherever you're coming from. It's really — it's really nice.

Orlando Montoya: You heard from people enjoying the beach at Lake Tobesofkee in Macon. That piece was produced by GPB's Taleen Hanna.

Orlando Montoya: In Georgia sports, the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Atlanta Braves 1 to 0 in Phoenix last night. The Diamondbacks' Brandon Pfaadt outpitched the Braves' Max Fried in six strong innings. Pfaadt scattered three hits and struck out four while Freed allowed a run on five hits in six innings. The lone run was a homer in the fifth inning by Eugenio Suarez. The Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy also made a leaping grab at the wall in the ninth inning.

Orlando Montoya: Sunny weather is expected around the state this weekend, so if you can handle the heat, we have a few ideas for you to get out and enjoy this weekend. This weekend is your last chance to experience Athens Restaurant Week. Back by popular demand, dozens of Athens' best restaurants will tempt you with lunch and dinner menus at special prices all week long. It's the perfect way to get a taste of the Athens culinary scene. Little ones will enjoy the Junior Ranger Challenge in Mitchell, Ga. There's a fun worksheet on Hamburg's history and a special prize given to kids who can complete it. That runs through July 31 at the Hamburg State Park in Mitchell. Visitors can stop by the park office to participate. And finally, in La Grange, Ga., they have the Founder's Day Celebration, coinciding with the 154th birthday of textile magnate Fuller Calloway Sr. This free event includes a tour of the Calloway family home and gardens, a storytelling workshop, and fresh squeezed lemonade at the Pool Terrace. That's tonight at the Hill and Dales Estate in La Grange.
