Chicago Boat Show leaving McCormick Place for Rosemont

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The Chicago Boat Show will retain its name, but beginning next year, it won't be in Chicago anymore.

The Discover Boating Chicago Boat Show, as it is now known, dates back more than 90 years. Published reports indicate the event was originally at Navy Pier, but archive video shows the event at McCormick Place as far back as 1961 – the first full year the convention center was in operation.

McCormick Place first opened in the fall of 1960, and had to be rebuilt from the ground up after a fire in 1967. The convention center now comprises four buildings with 2.6 million square feet of operation.

The Chicago Boat Show occupied some of those 2.6 million square feet this past January, it will be home to the Boat Show no more.

In 2025, the Boat Show will instead be held at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont. Organizers said they decided to move after "thorough market analysis, exhibitor demand, and boater feedback."

"After consulting with stakeholders and in-depth analysis, the best path forward is producing the Discover Boating Chicago Boat Show at the DES Convention Center," said Darren Envall, Vice President of Midwest Boat & Sportshows for the National Marine Manufacturers Association . "The more centralized Rosemont, Illinois, location positions the show for growth, accommodating the expanding boating population across a broader Chicagoland region, from the city and surrounding neighborhoods to the suburbs and exurbs of Chicago, and surrounding states."

The organization said the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center will host large and small boat exhibitors from an area spanning Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

Next year's Chicago Boat Show will be held at the Stephens Convention Center from Jan. 8-12, 2025.

What better way to prepare for a Chicago snowstorm then to picture yourself basking in the sun while floating on a boat in Lake Michigan?

Wednesday, the 2024 Chicago Boat Show kicks off at McCormick Place, offering tours of million-dollar yachts, new motorboats, pontoons fishing boats and more.

The iconic Chicago show, which turns the convention center into a "boating marketplace and nautical oasis in the middle of winter," runs through Sunday, a release said.

According to the release, guests to the show can "test the waters" indoors, with a beach club featuring a paddlesports pool, a bumper boats pool, daily entertainment, and more.

The  Discover Boating Chicago Boat Show  is an annual Midwest boating tradition, attracting thousands of visitors to the Windy City each year to explore the best in boating,” Show Manager and NMMA Vice President of Midwest Boat and Sport Shows Darren Envall said in the release. “We can’t wait to welcome back longtime boat show fans and new attendees, many of whom purchased boats over the pandemic. There’s no better place to discover boating, buy your dream boat and plan for your next adventure on the water.”  

Below are the hours for the 2024 Chicago Boat Show:

• Wednesday, 1/10: 2-8 p.m.
• Thursday, 1/11: 11 a.m. - 8 p.m.
• Friday, 1/12: 11 a.m. - 8 p.m.
• Saturday, 1/13: 10 a.m. - 8 p.m.
• Sunday, 1/14: 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Tickets for adults can be purchased online here for $13 or on-site for $15, while tickets are free for kids ages 12 years and younger when accompanied by a paid adult admission.

This year's show will feature plenty of attractions , from brand new bumper boats for kids to a stand-up paddle boarding pool and a mechanical wave surf simulator.

Chicago Auto Show

Following January's Boat Show will be one of the most highly anticipated events each year, the 10-day long Chicago Auto Show , the largest auto exhibition in the country.

Also held at the McCormick Place, festivities for this year's Chicago Auto Show will begin on on Feb. 8 with a two-day media preview ahead of the public show.

A "First Look for Charity" event will be held on Feb. 9 before the show officially gets underway on Saturday, Feb. 10.

The show will run through Presidents' Day, or Monday, Feb. 19.

This year's Chicago Auto Show will open every day at 10 a.m., closing at 9 p.m. on Feb. 10 and Feb. 12-18.

The show will close at 6 p.m. on Feb. 11 and at 8 p.m. on Feb. 19.

This year's event will showcase the latest innovations in automobiles, with the vehicles on display in 2024 still yet to be determined.

Tickets are $17 per person for adults, and $12 per person for children ages 4-12 and seniors ages 62 and older. Admission is free for children 3 years of age and younger.

Chicago RV & Camping Show

For those interested in vehicles that are quite a bit larger, there's time to take a break while the Chicago Auto Show is going on to check out the annual Chicago RV & Camping Show at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont.

This year's show will take place from Thursday, Feb. 15 to Sunday, Feb. 18, showcasing new 2024 models with special show prices and campground related booth displays.

The show will operate with the following hours:

• Thursday, 2/15: 12-8 p.m.
• Friday, 2/16: 10 a.m. - 8 p.m.
• Saturday, 2/17: 10 a.m. - 9 p.m.
• Sunday, 2/18: 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

One-day tickets for adults ages 13 and up are $14, though a multi-day ticket can be purchased for $19. Tickets are $4 for children ages 6-12, with a multi-day pass costing $7 for kids.

The annual Chicago Boat Show will be moving next year out of its longtime home at McCormick Place, organizers announced Thursday.

After 92 years, Chicago’s largest boat show will debut at Rosemont’s Donald E. Stephens Convention Center on Jan. 8-12, 2025.

The decision came after multiple conversations with exhibitors, said Darren Envall, vice president at National Marine Manufacturers Association, organizer of the event. Market analysis and boater feedback were also factors for the shift to Rosemont, which is closer to suburban boaters.

“The more centralized Rosemont ... location positions the show for growth, accommodating the expanding boating population across a broader Chicagoland region,” Envall said in a news release.

Next year’s show is expected to feature more fishing boats, which cater to suburban and recreational boaters, a large customer base. The average boater’s income is $100,000 or less, Envall told the Sun-Times, so the convention will display more entry-level boats. However, the event will still showcase million-dollar yachts, he added.

Outdoor industries, including boating, became more popular during the pandemic when people could enjoy being outside while remaining socially distant from others, Envall said.

In 2022, the number of outdoor recreation participants grew 2.3% to a record high of more than 168 million people, or 55% of the U.S. population ages 6 and older, according to a 2023 report from the Outdoor Industry Association.

January’s Chicago Boat Show was expected to attract about 40,000 visitors from Illinois, Michigan, Indiana and southern Wisconsin. Exhibitors displayed some 400 fishing boats, deck boats, ski boats, wake boats, pontoons and yachts ranging in price from less than $10,000 to more than $1 million. But only 18,169 visitors turned out, said Envall, citing bad weather.

He expects next year's show to have 40,000 attendees, along with exhibitors from multiple states in the region.

In the last decade, the show has evolved from boats, recreational vehicles and sailing vessels to strictly a boat exhibition, which Envall said was also a deciding factor for moving to Rosemont.

Other outdoor industry events staging shows at the DES Convention Center include the Chicago RV & Camping Show, the Chicago Golf Show and the Travel & Adventure Show.

The DES Convention Center has 840,000 square feet of exhibition space, compared to 2.6 million square feet of exhibit halls at McCormick Place.

Getting to the Show

2024 Chicago Boat Show returns to McCormick Place in January

CHICAGO - McCormick Place is about to turn into a boater's paradise when the 2024 Chicago Boat Show returns to the Windy City in January.

The ultimate boating bash for marine enthusiasts is scheduled to make a splash at the Chicago lakefront convention center from Jan. 10 to 14, showcasing the hottest power boats, fishing gear, and marine gadgets, according to a statement released Friday from the event's organizers.

"The Discover Boating Chicago Boat Show is an annual Midwest boating tradition, attracting thousands of visitors to the Windy City each year to explore the best in boating," said Darren Envall, Show Manager and NMMA Vice President of Midwest Boat and Sport Shows.

"There’s no better place to discover boating, buy your dream boat and plan for your next adventure on the water," Envall went on to say.

The Chicago Boat Show isn't just about ogling at boats though. Attendees can test the waters with cool indoor activities, including the Discover Boating Beach Club featuring a paddlesports pool, a new Bumper Boats pool, daily entertainment for all ages and educational sessions.

Chicago Boat Show announces new location for 2025

The NMMA announced the  Discover Boating Chicago Boat Show is moving from McCormick Place to the Donald E. Stephens Convention & Conference Center (DES Convention Center) in 2025.

NMMA said the move of Chicagoland’s largest boating event is the result of thorough market analysis, exhibitor demand and boater feedback, and positions the show for growth to meet the needs of the boating industry and attendees throughout the region. The Discover Boating Chicago Boat Show will take place in its new space, January 8-12, 2025. 

“After consulting with stakeholders and in-depth analysis, the best path forward is producing the Discover Boating Chicago Boat Show at the DES Convention Center,” said Darren Envall, Vice President of Midwest Boat & Sportshows for NMMA. “The more centralized Rosemont, IL location positions the show for growth, accommodating the expanding boating population across a broader Chicagoland region, from the city and surrounding neighborhoods to the suburbs and exurbs of Chicago, and surrounding states.”

The DES Convention Center will host both large and small boats and exhibitors from a multi-state area spanning Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin.

Centrally located in the Village of Rosemont, 15 miles northwest of downtown Chicago, the DES Convention Center provides 840,000 square feet of exhibition space, is near a multitude of restaurants, hotels, shops and entertainment, and within close access to a number of major highways and public transportation offerings. The Discover Boating Chicago Boat Show joins other shows in the outdoor industry in making Rosemont its home, including the Chicago RV & Camping Show, Chicago Golf Show, and Travel & Adventure Show.

“The Chicagoland area is a hub for tourism and events, and the Village of Rosemont is no exception with its convenient location, close parking, and great amenities,” said Christopher Stephens, Executive Director of the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center. “On behalf of Rosemont and the DES Convention Center, we are pleased and honored to welcome the Discover Boating Chicago Boat Show to its new home and show exhibitors and both current and future boaters all that Rosemont has to offer. Chicago Auto Show 2024 | Tickets, dates and how to attend

I t's February, so that means it's time to head out to Chicago for the 2024 Chicago Auto Show . It's the 116th show held, with the first exhibition way back in 1901.

Here are the details if you'd like to attend:

When is the Chicago Auto Show?

The Chicago Show has its press and industry days on February 8-9. And then on Saturday, February 10, the show opens to the public. The final public day will be February 19. Hours for the public days are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. except for February 11 where it closes at 6 p.m. and February 19 where it closes at 8 p.m.

Where is the Chicago Auto Show

The show is at McCormick Place, as always. The exact address is 2301 S. King Dr, Chicago, Illinois, 60616. The exhibits ( show floor map link here ) are limited to just the South Hall this year, versus in years past they spread across both the North and the South Halls. A number of restaurants are open inside the convention center for food on site.

How much are the tickets for the Chicago Auto Show 2024?

Tickets will be available at the convention center during public days. Tickets are also available online at this link . Pricing is $17 for adults, $12 for seniors 62 and older and for children 4 to 12. Children under 3 (part of the same family and with purchase of an adult ticket) are free.

Is the Chicago Auto Show good for kids?

Like we mentioned above, kids under 3 years old get in for free, and those from 4-12 years old will be $12. Kids should have a great time at the Chicago Auto Show with all of the cars that are unlocked for them to hop in and experience. Plus, there are ride opportunities available that you'll be able to bring children on such as Ford's Built Wild mountain, Hyundai's EV test track and other outdoor test drives/rides.

Chicago Auto Show Parking and Public Transportation

McCormick Place has parking garages for visitors. Prices vary based on the lot. Lot B is the most affordable with parking at $16, and Lots A and C are $25. Parking after 6 p.m. is reduced to $11 for all three lots. Additionally, there are two bus routes with stops at McCormick Place (#3 King Drive and #21 Cermak). There is a CTA train station half a mile from the convention center, plus shuttles running from Metra stations to the show. You can find more information on all of these, here .
