cost of 42 foot yacht

Average Yacht Prices | 40, 50, 60, 70, 100 feet + Helpful Examples

How much do yachts cost? Let’s look at yacht prices per size.

Note: We will look at yachts that are a few years old. Very few people buy brand-new yachts as the price comes down a lot after only a few years.

How much is a small yacht? Let’s start at 40 feet length.

40 Foot Yacht Cost

A 40-foot yacht can be found used for around $200,000 and new models can cost as much as a million dollars. There are always lots of used yachts for sale around 40 feet in length, which makes them more attractive to first-time buyers.

Technically, a yacht begins at 23 feet. However, yachts that size will more often be referred to as boats.

A 40-foot yacht is a great option for looking for relative simplicity and plenty of comfort and capability. This size is great for day trips in the Caribbean dedicated to speed boating or simple cruising.

The size remains manageable, but the vessel can be updated with extra living spaces and amenities as desired, with a more affordable price than larger options.

The maintenance prices will remain lower as well.

Make sure you are considering the age of your yacht. Even if it is on the smaller end, it will be more expensive if it is new and custom-built to your wants.

Even if you think a 40-foot yacht is the cheapest option, these small factors make for a sliding price scale.

You might find that a smaller, new, custom yacht is more expensive than an older, simpler, larger yacht. One benefit of an older yacht is that it should have the improvements and equipment that make it comfortable to operate and will not have those additional costs.

50 Foot Yacht Cost

50-foot yachts are  normally owner-operated, so you wouldn’t need to pay for a crew. Now we are around the size of 2-bedroom yachts.

They can provide more living space giving the owner flexibility for more guests and making it a more permanent residential option. With more space comes the opportunity to install more amenities as well.

The biggest difference between the 40-foot vessel and the 50-foot is the accommodations.

Expect three-cabin layouts, which give plenty of space for rest. The opportunity to create guest rooms, owners’ suite, and entertainment spaces are better with these yachts.

Our Pick: Hatteras GT54 Convertible Sportfish

How much is a large yacht? Let’s  step up to 60 foot.

60 Foot Yacht Cost

Now we’re looking at 2-bedroom yacht prices. A yacht in this range approaches the upper end of the owner/operator criteria.

This means that owners need to decide whether they can handle this size yacht on their own or if they need to hire outside help from a crew.

If you’re thinking of buying a boat this size, the cost may not be an issue, but understand that adding crew members adds substantial extra expenses! Crew salaries start at around $3K /mth for junior members and $10K for captains and experienced crew members.

This size is great for longer travels beyond day trips and adds more and more space for extra amenities. Hosting guests becomes easier.

Here are some examples:

70 Foot Yacht Cost

We’re now looking at 3-bedroom yachts. Once you reach this size yacht, it is almost guaranteed you will need a crew to help operate it. A crewed yacht is very different from an owner-operated yacht.

This is just shy of the superyacht category, so if you settle on this size, know you are almost there!

As previously mentioned, as the yacht size gets larger, so do the number of factors that make the purchase more layered and complex.

When yachts reach this size, the interior layout begins to change more drastically. They often have a spacious main deck perfect for dining and entertaining guests, whereas below, the yacht would likely have four or more cabins and crew quarters.

With more rooms comes more cost and more opportunity to customize the space to make it your own.

Here are some great options for this size:

Our Pick: Hatteras GT70 Convertible Sportfish

cost of 42 foot yacht

The 2017 GT70 model runs around $4,500,000, but keep in mind the extra costs of maintenance, furnishing, and a cabin crew to help it run. It’s great for a long vacation and far-away destinations.

The GT70 convertible sportfish is known for its speed and agility, and high propulsion power. It has twin diesel engines, 1900 hp each; cruising speed over 30 mph.

It is 70′ 6″ with 2,140-gallon fuel capacity. The inside is lavish, with a galley, a huge salon, and five staterooms.

  • 74-foot Ocean Alexander Motoryacht; twin diesel, 1150 hp each; cruising speed 24 mph. Price: $1,895,000 for 2011

100 Foot Yacht Costs (and up):

You are officially in the superyacht range.

These yachts come in all styles and shapes, allowing for cruising along coastlines or focusing on watercraft and speed boating.

Since this is likely the peak size boat for practical use, you can expect a lot of additional costs for hiring a crew, maintenance, docking, as well as stocking your boat full of amenities.

You’re likely to spend the bulk of your costs furnishing this size boat as bigger yachts typically are sold without furniture. The previous owner will want to hold on to designer furniture and other expensive interior.

Check out these great  examples of 100-foot yachts .

Our Pick: 143′ 04″ Virtus 44

cost of 42 foot yacht

This model cost around $20,189,000.

This mega yacht is anyone’s dream.

It is home to a fully integrated beach club with room for a pool deck, floor-to-ceiling windows in the main salon, a hot tub on the top deck, five staterooms, an 8-person crew, and room to sleep ten guests.

It has room for water toys and other gadgets, with a layout that keeps them purposefully hidden from the outside world. It has a 12-knot cruising speed and 16-knot max speed,

Other 100+ Feet Yachts Price Examples

  • 98′ 5″ AB 100 Price: $8,843,260 for 2018
  • 161′ 04″ Acico Nassima Price: $17,933,000 for 2012

How Much is Yacht Insurance?

Insurance on a yacht is around 1% of the purchase price per year. It can go higher if you have lots of expensive designer furniture. This can add up over the years. It’s often cheaper to insure a sailing yacht but the price range is still within the 0.7-1.3%.

What Other Expenses Do Yacht Owners Face?

Harbor fees is another expense for yacht owners. It’s also a yearly fee that varies but as a rule of thumb, you can expect to pay around $100 per foot per year, depending on how popular the marina is. You will also have to be on a waitlist if you want a good location.

How Much Does a Luxury Yacht Cost?

A super yacht fall under the category of “luxury yachts” or “mega-yachts”.

The world’s largest private vessel belongs to the Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s Azzam. It is 590 feet long and costs $600 million to build!

It is outliers like these that increase the price average for yacht owners, perhaps scaring potential owners when they start their research.

As a luxury yacht price guide, however, we need to look at averages.

Currently, the average superyacht costs $275 million. This does not even account for maintenance costs, either.

Superyachts are large and luxurious, needing a professional crew to help them run. They are designed to emphasize comfort, speed, and longer expeditions – depending on the yacht builders.

They might have:

  • swimming pools,
  • water toys,
  • diving and fishing poles,
  • fully furnished rooms,
  • helicopter landing pads,
  • and smaller support vessels

Just to name a few amenities. They are truly the epitome of the elite.

What Size Boat is Considered a Yacht?

The normal yacht length starts at around 23 feet, and can extend hundreds of feet.  If the boat meets 23 feet, it can be considered a yacht.

A boat does not need luxury features to be considered a yacht.

It can be minimal and stripped of the “extra” stuff to fall into the yacht category, so long as it meets the size and length criteria.

11 Things to Consider Before You Purchase

When making this purchase, the yacht size you buy needs to reflect what you hope to get out of the vessel.

Some important questions to ask yourself before you buy are:

  • What does your perfect day on the water look like?
  • How long will your average day on the water be?
  • Will it be more boating/watercraft focused or long cruise focused?
  • Will you use the yacht for fishing?
  • Will you be on the yacht every day of the week or just on weekends?
  • How many people do you hope to fit on the yacht?
  • Do you plan to stay on the yacht overnight?
  • Where will you dock the yacht?
  • How much boating experience do you have?
  • How fast do you want the yacht to go?
  • How important is it to have extra amenities like furnished rooms, water toys, electronics, etc.?

These questions will guide you to understand the size you really need and will be able to realistically maintain versus what your most ideal yacht would look like.

When Do You Need a Full-Time Crew?

At length over 50 or 60 feet, you may need a full-time captain or crew.

A full-time crew person will be needed to keep all the varnished woodwork looking good and all the little things maintained.

Sometimes, you must be honest with yourself about what you want and what you actually need. Be self-aware about your abilities (or lack thereof) in taking care of a specific size yacht.

If you don’t know much about boats and navigation, you will need more help to use your vessel.

Hopefully, this comprehensive guide gives you a good starting point as you begin your yacht price research process.

Important Things to Consider As Well

Although there are many factors to consider when understanding a yacht’s prices, it is an exciting purchase nonetheless and should be enjoyed as much as possible.

At the end of your research, you’ll be the owner of a beautiful yacht you can use for leisure, cruising, sports craft, fishing, or all of the above.

Although this article is a good starting point, we would also recommend getting in touch with a  yacht broker who can help you find your best fit , model, year, and the price is given your personal budget.

They are great sources of knowledge in addition to personal research.

Make sure you are as patient as possible in this process to make sure you are covering all your bases, but most importantly, enjoy the process!

Here’s How Much Yachts Cost on Average:

Yachts start around $300,000 for smaller 40-foot models and can go as high as several hundred million dollars for superyachts.

These are the main contributing factors to the price of a yacht:

  • The size of the yacht
  • The age of the yacht
  • The brand and  type of yacht

In general, the larger the yacht is, the more important the quality of the build becomes.

Also, potential owners need to understand the cruising speed and propulsion of different yachts.

The yacht type is also broken down into two categories:

  • Mediterranean Style Open style expresses yacht with maximum space for sun, little-to-no shade on the deck.
  • Hard-top express Semi-enclosed or fully-enclosed space on deck for the operator
  • Flybridge yachts

An express yacht is often referred to interchangeably as an  express cruiser  or  sports cruiser .

It has a single deck above the hull with a living space below.

They are much sleeker, too.

A flybridge yacht is often referred to as a sedan bridge or sport bridge, and it is typically used for fishing. It has additional space above the main deck.

Since the flybridge area has more space on the second deck, the main deck is normally made up of enclosed spaces and rooms.

It can have an open-air layout but can also have a hard-top.

Short Answer

The cost of a 42 foot catamaran can vary widely depending on size, features, age, and condition.

Generally, you can expect to pay anywhere from $50,000 to $200,000 for a 42 foot catamaran.

It is also important to factor in maintenance costs, as catamarans typically require more maintenance than other types of boats.

Lastly, it is important to consult with a boat expert or professional to get a better idea of the cost of a 42 foot catamaran.

Overview of Catamaran Costs

The cost of a 42-foot catamaran can vary greatly depending on the model, features, and overall condition of the vessel.

Generally, catamarans in this size range cost anywhere from $200,000 to $1 million.

This price range is largely dependent on the size, features, and condition of the vessel.

Catamarans of this size are typically used for recreation and can be found with features such as air conditioning, galley kitchens, and spacious cabins.

Many of these catamarans come with the option of adding additional features like satellite TV or a Jacuzzi, which can add to the overall cost.

For those looking for a larger, more luxurious catamaran, the cost can increase significantly.

Boats of this size often have more room for amenities and can be custom-built to meet exact specifications.

However, these vessels also tend to be more expensive in terms of both purchase price and upkeep.

Fortunately, there are also many pre-owned catamarans available at prices that are much lower than the cost of a new vessel.

This is a great option for those looking for a more affordable option.

When considering the purchase of a pre-owned catamaran, it is important to consider the condition of the vessel and the cost of any necessary repairs or upkeep.

It is also important to research the vessel’s history to ensure that it has been properly maintained.

Overall, the cost of a 42-foot catamaran can vary significantly depending on the model, features, and condition of the vessel.

For those looking for a more luxurious option with additional features, the cost can increase significantly.

However, there are also many pre-owned catamarans available at prices that are much lower than the cost of a new vessel.

With careful research and planning, it is possible to find the perfect catamaran for your budget.

Factors that Impact Catamaran Costs

cost of 42 foot yacht

When considering the cost of a 42-foot catamaran, there are several factors that can affect the overall price.

For starters, the size of the catamaran will play an important role in the cost.

The larger the catamaran, the more it will cost.

Additionally, the materials used to construct the catamaran will also play a role in the cost.

Catamarans constructed with higher quality materials such as fiberglass or carbon fiber will be more expensive than those made with less expensive materials such as aluminum or wood.

The type of catamaran will also affect the cost.

Catamarans designed for recreational purposes such as sailing, fishing, or cruising will typically have different features than those designed for racing or commercial use.

The features of the catamaran can also affect the cost.

For instance, catamarans with air conditioning, galley kitchens, and spacious cabins will cost more than those without these features.

Finally, the age of the catamaran will also impact the cost.

Catamarans that are brand new will typically cost more than pre-owned models.

This is because pre-owned models may require more maintenance and repairs.

Additionally, pre-owned catamarans may not have the same features as a brand new one, so they may be less expensive.

Cost Comparison of New vs. Pre-Owned Catamarans

Its no secret that buying a new 42-foot catamaran can be a costly endeavor.

On the high end, catamarans of this size can cost upwards of one million dollars, with the most luxurious models often going for significantly more.

However, for those who are looking for a more cost-effective solution, there are many pre-owned catamarans available on the market at prices that are much lower than the cost of a new vessel.

When it comes to new catamarans, the cost can vary widely depending on the model, features, and materials used.

For a basic model, you can expect to pay anywhere from $200,000 to $500,000.

For those looking for more luxury features such as air conditioning, galley kitchens, and spacious cabins, the cost can increase significantly.

Its also important to consider any additional costs associated with owning a catamaran such as insurance, maintenance, and fuel.

In comparison, pre-owned catamarans are often available at much lower prices.

Depending on the age and condition of the vessel, you may be able to find a 42-foot catamaran for as little as $50,000.

However, its important to do your research when buying a pre-owned catamaran as some models may require more maintenance and repair than others.

Ultimately, the cost of a 42-foot catamaran will depend on the model, features, and condition of the vessel.

While buying a new catamaran can be an expensive endeavor, there are many pre-owned models available on the market at much lower prices.

Its important to do your research and understand all the associated costs of owning a catamaran before making a purchase.

Luxury Features that Can Increase Catamaran Costs

cost of 42 foot yacht

When considering the cost of a 42-foot catamaran, its important to remember that the price tag can vary greatly depending on the features included.

Catamarans in this size range typically come with luxury features that can add significant cost to the overall vessel.

Air conditioning, galley kitchens, and spacious cabins are just a few of the features that can drive up the cost of a catamaran.

Furthermore, these features can be customized to the buyers individual needs and preferences, which will also increase the cost.

The type of materials used to construct the catamaran will also affect the cost.

Many catamarans are constructed using fiberglass, which is a strong and durable material that is relatively inexpensive.

However, some models are constructed with more expensive materials such as carbon fiber and Kevlar, which can increase the cost significantly.

Additionally, the type of motor and propulsion system used can also raise the cost.

For those looking for a more luxurious catamaran, there are a number of options that can drive the cost up significantly.

For example, many catamarans come with a range of amenities such as wet bars, hot tubs, and outdoor grills.

These features can be customized to the buyers individual needs and preferences and can add a great deal of cost to the overall vessel.

Additionally, many catamarans come with a range of high-tech features such as autopilot systems, satellite navigation, and entertainment systems.

These features can also drive up the cost of the vessel.

Finally, its important to remember that the cost of a 42-foot catamaran can vary greatly depending on the model and features.

Those looking for a more luxurious catamaran should expect to pay significantly more than those looking for a more basic vessel.

However, there are also many pre-owned catamarans available at much lower prices than the cost of a new vessel.

Benefits of Owning a Catamaran

Owning a catamaran comes with a number of benefits, which makes it an attractive option for those looking for a larger recreational vessel.

For starters, catamarans provide a more stable ride than their monohull counterparts.

This stability can be especially beneficial for those who are prone to motion sickness or who have small children on board.

Additionally, catamarans typically have larger decks, giving you more room to move around and enjoy the outdoors.

Catamarans also generally have less drag, which means they use less fuel and provide a smoother and quieter ride.

Finally, catamarans can be outfitted with a variety of features such as air conditioning, galley kitchens, and spacious cabins, which can make them ideal for extended stays on the water.

Cost of Maintenance and Upkeep

cost of 42 foot yacht

When it comes to catamarans, cost of ownership doesnt end with the initial purchase price.

Maintenance and upkeep are two important factors to consider when budgeting for a 42-foot catamaran.

While exact maintenance costs will depend on the model, age, and condition of the catamaran, there are certain costs associated with all catamarans that must be taken into account.

For starters, a 42-foot catamaran will need to be berthed in a marina.

Depending on location and type of berth, this can cost anywhere from $200 to $600 per month.

Additionally, the catamaran will need to be insured.

Marine insurance can cost anywhere from 2 to 5% of the vessels value per year.

Catamarans must also be regularly serviced and maintained.

This includes regularly changing the oil, servicing the engines, replacing filters and spark plugs, and cleaning the hull and deck.

Depending on the type of service and how often it is done, these costs can range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars.

Finally, catamarans are prone to wear and tear and will need to be refitted and refurbished every few years.

Refitting and refurbishing can range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars, depending on the extent of the work.

All in all, the cost of maintaining and keeping a 42-foot catamaran can vary from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand each year.

It is important to factor these costs into the overall budget when considering the purchase of a catamaran.

How to Financially Prepare for Buying a Catamaran

Purchasing a 42 foot catamaran can be a big financial commitment, but it can also be a rewarding experience that allows you to explore the open water in comfort and style.

Before taking the plunge and investing in a catamaran, there are a few things that you should consider to make sure that you are financially prepared for the purchase.

The first step is to determine your budget.

Catamarans in this size range can cost anywhere from $200,000 to $1 million, so it’s important to figure out what you can reasonably afford.

Don’t forget to consider ongoing costs such as insurance, maintenance, and docking fees, as these can add up over time.

Once you have an idea of what you can afford, you can start researching catamarans that fit within your budget.

If you’re looking to save money, you may want to consider purchasing a pre-owned catamaran.

Pre-owned catamarans are often much less expensive than their new counterparts, and they can provide a great way to get the boat you want without breaking the bank.

However, make sure you do your research and inspect any pre-owned catamaran thoroughly before making a purchase to make sure it is in good condition and meets your needs.

Finally, you may want to consider taking out a loan to finance the purchase of your catamaran.

Many banks and financial institutions offer boat loans with competitive rates, so it’s worth shopping around to find the best deal.

Loans are also a great way to spread the cost of a catamaran over a longer period of time, so you can make more manageable payments.

By taking the time to properly prepare financially for the purchase of a 42 foot catamaran, you can make sure that you are making a smart investment that won’t break the bank.

With a bit of research and careful planning, you can find the perfect catamaran to suit your budget and your lifestyle.

Final Thoughts

Now that you know the costs associated with purchasing a 42-foot catamaran, you can make an informed decision about whether this type of vessel is right for you.

While the cost of a new catamaran can add up quickly, there are also many pre-owned catamarans available at more reasonable prices.

Don’t forget to factor in the cost of maintenance and upkeep when budgeting for your catamaran.

With the right financial preparation and consideration of all the factors involved, you can be sure to find the perfect catamaran for you and your family.

Carbon tech_0015_Verve42

Azimut’s pioneering use of carbon fiber lamination goes beyond pure performance. The Carbon Tech Generation offers expanded volumes onboard, while maintaining excellent dynamic stability and perfect handling. Preserving the yacht’s low center of gravity, the carbon fiber was focused on the upper parts of the yacht, lightening the laminated components by up to 30% and reducing the natural roll momentum up to 15%.

The Verve 42 can reach a top speed of 43 knots and cruises at 32 knots with three 400 hp Mercury outboard engines. It’s the ideal propulsion for dynamic and sporty yachts, such as the new Verve 42, with an unbeatable weight-to-power ratio. The pilot feels effortlessly in command with smooth handling and responsive controls. Low displacement is another important design objective accomplished thanks to this advanced solution.

2022 Cruisers 42GLS Outboard

  • By Capt. Chris Caswell
  • February 26, 2022

Cruisers 42GLS Outboard running

Some builders enter the outboard market timidly, with one toe in the water at a time. Cruisers, however, jumped into the deep end with a full cannonball, first with its 38GLS and now with the triple-engine 42GLS. If you don’t fall in love with this fun boat at first glance, well, check your pulse.

For starters, Cruisers decided that if one foldout beach on the 38 was good, then two on the 42 would be more than twice as good. And the builder is right. Having hullsides that morph into extended deck areas doesn’t just recapture space lost to outboards on the transom platform, but it also creates an entirely new fun area to explore. Suddenly, you don’t just have a boat with 13-foot beam, but one with nearly 19 feet of deck for entertaining and playing in the water.

Cruisers 42GLS Outboard outboards

Aside from the 4 feet in length and two beaches, why opt for the 42? There’s a lot of reasons. The 42GLS is a true express cruiser with a full hardtop running far enough aft from the windshield to give sun protection to the wraparound dinette, and it has a big electric sunroof (standard) for when you want some breeze. The 38GLS had a T-top but is really a big bowrider, while the 42GLS has not only the hardtop but also a full glass enclosure on the sides, an express-cruiser feature we appreciated in a lumpy inlet leading to the Gulf Stream.

Interior and Accessories

That 4 feet also translates into a civilized cabin (6 feet, 7 inches of headroom) that would encourage overnighting, with a full queen berth tucked in a private playpen aft, a dinette that converts to a tapered queen for kids (or in-laws), and a mini galley with a fridge and microwave to heat the coffee when you don’t want to tiptoe out to the cockpit galley in your jammies.

Cruisers 42GLS Outboard helm

There’s a rinse-off shower on the transom, but the big enclosed head in the cabin has a stand-up shower to get you squeaky clean, plus a vanity with toiletry stowage.

The cockpit galley is impressive, with the available Kenyon grill, and even a TV (think alfresco movie nights) that moves from the salon to the cockpit. Stools turn the raised galley counter into a bar, and I settled in there quite comfortably for our outing.

Cruisers 42GLS Outboard entertaining

The skipper has the best seat in the house: a bolstered double-wide helm chair overlooking an impeccably arranged dash with twin Simrad monitors and clearly labeled buttons for systems. The joystick for the triple outboards is exactly where I wanted it, just in front of the throttle and shifters. The skipper gets air-conditioning vents, and with the addition of a zippered back door to the cockpit, this entertaining area can be cooled or heated for all-season comfort just like the cabin.

Safe access to the bow is through a clever windshield door that flips away. There’s also a recessed gate for spray or breeze protection, and parents will delight in the high coamings forward for kid security.

Cruisers 42GLS Outboard bow seating

There’s nothing unusual about the wraparound seating in the bow until you lift a cushion, where you’ll find nicely finished storage bins. In fact, Cruisers has gone to lengths to make every possible dead space into a stowage nook, cranny or locker. The bow seating has a table that converts to a sun pad, multiple cup holders (even in the fold-down armrest), and an optional sunshade. A Genius anchor windlass is hidden out of sight under a foredeck hatch, with controls by foot buttons or at the helm.

This hull is a development of the well-proven 38GLS, and we had a chance to give the 42GLS a serious test in some square-edged Atlantic seas. On a couple of waves, we got to play astronaut—you know, we went weightless. But the hull, with its 21-degree transom deadrise, brought us down softly.

Cruisers 42GLS Outboard cabin

Cruisers does an excellent job with construction, using a mix of infused resin and hand-laid glass (but no wood) to create a tough hull and superstructure. I was impressed that the builder makes all its own wiring harnesses in-house, with every wire labeled for future tracing, and it does its own woodwork and upholstery to a luxurious level. The weld work on stanchions and rails is polished and jewellike.

I also liked the outstanding access to the various underdeck systems, with filters, batteries and seacocks in well-finished bilges and compartments. Our test boat had the optional 5.5 kW diesel genset to keep the margaritas flowing and the air conditioner blowing, and it was readily accessible along with its separate 20-gallon fuel tank. A Seakeeper gyrostabilizer is an option, and Cruisers has allotted ample room for it in the machinery area aft.

Cruisers 42GLS Outboard head

Shopping around? Check out the Sea Ray 400 SLX ($718,078), which is a bit shorter, and comes with a T-top and no beaches.

So, what’ll the 42 do? Our test boat had a trio of 400 hp Mercury Verados, giving us a solid 52 mph in the smooth spots. You can opt for 350 or 450 hp Verados, but I thought this triple outboard package was perfect.

I loved the 42GLS for its flexibility, fun, performance, and solid design and construction. Small enough and fast enough for water toys, elegant enough for cocktail cruises, and comfortable enough that overnighting will be a plan, not an afterthought. What’s not to like with this cannonball into the deep end?

Crew is one of the largest expenses on a superyacht and critical to the owner’s enjoyment of their vessel. As the largest crew agency in the world, we know crew. Our cost calculator contains customized crew lists for yachts ranging from 80ft to 600ft with salary information based on our reference verified salary data.

Our users also have the ability to completely tailor the crew list to the specific needs, schedule and requirements of their vessel. Each yacht is unique and may have specific owner requests in addition to the yacht’s safe manning requirements.

Management of the supplemental crew costs and strategic budgeting can help avoid significant overspend on categories such as food and uniform. This tool contains default values based on our industry expertise and recommended budget for an efficiently and safely run superyacht.

To learn more about each crew position in detail, including salary ranges, please visit our yacht department directory .

Drag the sliders to modify your results. These are not linear scales and we expect most yachts to operate within the 20-80% window. Above 80% and below 20% costs increase or decrease at exaggerated levels and we only see numbers in these levels in very rare circumstances.

This sunburst diagram is interactive. You can click into each block to see the expense break down and mouse over each block for more details.

Our chart of accounts displays seven major categories, 20 sub-categories plus a further 80 detail categories for a total of 107.

Our yacht operating cost calculator is now on it’s third major revision. We start with actual yacht expense data from our yacht management accountants and then generate formulas to extrapolate out the budget for a wide range of yachts. We have been providing accounting services to large yachts for the past 18 years.

Our operating cost calculator is tuned for yachts from 80 to 600 feet. We find operating variables create the largest variances for yachts smaller than 100 feet and larger than 250 feet. We have tested the numbers the most in the range from 100 to 250 feet.

Our budget calculator factors in the fuel burn for a range of engine sizes typically seen installed on yachts by length. By dragging the green “fuel dockage” slider to the right you will increase the projected fuel burn rate and therefore the budget cost for fuel. Our default position would be for a typical displacement fuel burn. Position the slider in the 60-80% range for fuel projections for planning hulls.

Our default values produce a budget number that we believe is generous to run a yacht to a high standard. Perfect is a very expensive word to use in the yachting industry where standards are already high. Moving the crew and maintenance sliders to 80% will provide an “industry best” quality of crew and give them the maintenance budget to operate to a very high standard. If you need to go over the 80% area then you may have unusually labor intensive equipment on the yacht.

Yes, our yacht operating cost calculator can output a budget suitable for this situation. Adjust the owner use to 2 (minimum value), owner slider to 0, crew slider to 10%, Administration to 10%, Fuel and Dockage to 0, Maintenance to 10% and then Capital Repairs to 0. This will remove all of the large charges associated with owner use and vessel movement but leave the essential base maintenance and insurance in place.

Lift on and float in yacht transport is a popular way to transport yachts across large ocean passage. The yachts that this service certainly applies to are ones that may not have the motoring range or structural integrity for blue ocean cruising. The cost of transporting a yacht twice per year is put into our budget once the “Fuel Dockage” slider hits 75%. If your yacht has the range we recommend self-sufficient ocean passages whenever possible. Whilst the transport companies sell their services based upon reportedly well oiled operated schedules the reality is that your yacht may stay waiting for pickup for a week or more with no compensation due. When factoring in all secondary factors of self-sufficient passages (increased fuel, maintenance, potential storm damage, crew time off, extra delivery crew) compared with transporting your yacht (insurance, potential loading / unloading damage, loss of schedule control, no work whilst underway, crew flights, crew accommodation) we believe that there is a 100% premium associated with float in transport and a 75% premium with lift on transport compared with self-powered.

Abandoned yachts crash in value. We recommend that even if you are trying to sell your yacht that you use the yacht for a minimum of two weeks per year so that systems are tested and working every six months. There is nothing worse for a yacht than not being used. If you truly are not going to use the yacht then you should sell it immediately for the first genuine offer as every dollar you put into maintenance will not be recovered at the time of the sale.

We did not build this version with sailing yachts in mind. Early in our development of this version we decided to exclude sailing yachts as a few of the major cost drivers scale very differently for sailing yachts compared with motor yachts. For example: To calculate paint costs we reviewed the surface area of over 100 large yachts and created a formula for painted surface area to length. Sailing yachts just don’t scale in a consistent way. Similarly crew numbers don’t scale in the same manner that they do for motor yachts. If there is sufficient demand we may build a sailing selector switch into a future version of this tool.

We hate to hear when yacht owners were told by their broker to factor in 10% of the purchase price to operate the yacht. This over used saying is sadly right occasionally (particularly for newer yachts in the $20-30M range)… but just because a broken watch tells the right time twice a day you shouldn’t rely upon it to tell the time. As yachts get older their capital value decreases but their maintenance costs increase. There is no way that a fixed 10% of purchase cost rule can be true… if your broker told you this rule then you need a new yacht broker… we know some good ones. 😊

We'll Help You Find the Best Boat Insurance in Minutes

Our nationwide network of local independent agents is ready to help you find the perfect coverage at the best rate.. Article

Boat icon. Senior man wearing fishing vest.

How will this quote help me?

Your quote is based on several common factors to give you a clear picture of the cost you can expect, though an independent agent can shop around and maybe even improve your rate!

NOTE:  This quote is not final, though we did work with professional actuaries to help get you a ballpark figure to get started.

Do you have to have boat insurance on a boat?

Only two states require boat insurance by law, but there are a few instances where you may need it. If you dock your boat at a marina, they may require some form of coverage in order to protect their business. Also, if you finance your boat, nearly every lender will require coverage to protect their investment; use our list of the best boat insurance companies as a starting point.

Other than that, you should always have at least liability coverage on your boat to protect yourself against lawsuit costs if you cause bodily injury or property damage to another party. Property coverage is optional, but again, the more comprehensive your coverage, the better it can protect you.

How much is boat insurance?

The cost of any boat insurance policy depends on a number of factors, including your boat's size, value, and horsepower. Boat insurance policies can range from the low hundreds to tens of thousands of dollars annually, depending on what kind of coverage you need.

Do I need to insure my boat trailer?

Insuring your boat trailer is always a safe bet. Though your boat trailer may be protected by your home or car insurance policy, you can also add coverage to your boat insurance for your trailer. It's best to talk to your independent insurance agent about your boat, the trailer, and how you use it to determine the right coverage amount.

Does boat insurance cover passengers?

If your policy includes medical payments coverage, it will cover injuries to your passengers if you get into an accident. Medical payments coverage is an important option because just one accident can cause injuries that are extremely costly to treat.

Does boat insurance cover theft?

Typically, yes. But it's important to review your specific boat insurance policy with your independent insurance agent to make sure. Every carrier and every policy is different, but the more you know about your own policy, the better it will help protect you.

Does boat insurance cover hurricanes?

In most cases, yes, your boat will be covered against hurricane damage. But, as with any other natural disaster or unexpected event, you'll want to double-check your policy.

Does boat insurance cover engine damage?

No, boat insurance often excludes defective machinery or maintenance costs. Wear and tear is a natural outcome of use and not covered by your policy.

What is the cost difference in insuring different kinds of boats?

The size and value of your boat are two of the most impactful features on the cost of your coverage. Insurance for a $20,000 boat can cost an average of only $300 per year, while insuring a $2 million yacht can cost as much as $30,000 per year.

Does boat insurance cover me if I hit a rock?

If you have collision coverage on your boat insurance, you should be covered for the cost of repairs if you hit a rock.

Does boat insurance cover a blown engine?

In certain cases, boat insurance may cover a blown engine if the disaster was due to a listed peril. For example, ice and freeze damage to engines is typically covered. However, blown engines due to the owner's negligence are not covered.

Happy family boating. Find boat insurance.

Find the perfect agent to shop multiple insurance companies on your behalf, saving you time and money.

Boat owners can experience a lot of joy and excitement brought by their watercraft, but they also have to anticipate potentially costly disasters ahead of time. Aside from accidents on the water, your boat is also vulnerable to theft, vandalism, flood damage, and more. That's what makes having boat insurance so critical.

An independent insurance agent can help protect your vessel with the right boat insurance long before you ever need to file a claim. But first, here's some boat insurance 101.

What Is Boat Insurance?

Boat insurance is designed to cover boat owners and their watercraft in case of many different disasters, including accidents, fire, and more. These policies are made to protect boats that have motors, like yachts, pontoon boats, etc., but they don't cover kayaks or canoes. Boat insurance is important because homeowners insurance doesn't provide enough coverage on its own for most watercraft.

Do You Have to Have Insurance on a Boat?

Only two states actually require boat insurance coverage , but there are a few situations where you may need it. First, if you dock your boat at a marina, they may require some form of coverage in order to protect their business. Second, if you financed your boat, nearly every lender will require coverage to protect their investment.

Further, there are certain types of boats that are more important to insure than others due to their value, risk level, and more. Here's a handy guide to whether you need boat insurance for your vessel.

Most often, boat insurance is purchased for:

  • Utility boats
  • Fishing boats
  • Pontoon boats

Despite all the fun to be had with a boat, accidents and disasters can happen. The easiest way to protect yourself and others, and get you back on the lake after a situation, is with the right boat insurance.

Best Boat Insurance Companies

While many carriers offer boat insurance, it's helpful to know some of the top names in the industry before you start shopping. Here are a few of our highest-recommended boat insurance companies.

An independent insurance agent can help you get the right boat insurance policy for you from one of these top-rated carriers, or another that best meets your needs.

Do I Need Boat Insurance?

The only two states that require boat insurance by law are Utah and Arkansas. Boat owners in these states must have coverage for personal watercraft or for powerboats with 50 horsepower or greater. Otherwise, if you live elsewhere and your boat is designated for personal use, you're not technically required to have insurance for it.

However, if you lease or otherwise finance your boat, you're likely to be required by your lender to carry boat insurance, and often you'll need both collision and comprehensive coverage. When docking your boat, you're often also required by the marina to have liability coverage. However, with boating accidents being so common, it's important to at least consider getting boat insurance for yourself.

Most Common Types of Boating Accidents

Most common types of boating accidents.

Notice that the top five causes of boating accidents are due to human error, such as inattention, improper lookout, alcohol use, and inexperience. Since you can't often blame the boat for an accident or other disaster, it's even more critical to ensure that your vessel is covered with the right insurance.

How Much Is Boat Insurance?

The average annual cost of boat insurance ranges from $200 to $500 depending on the type of boat you have and other factors. It also depends on which types of coverage you need, and how much coverage you need. For folks who only purchase liability coverage, you might pay less than $100 annually.

Often, you can expect the annual cost of your boat insurance to be about 1.5% of the value of your boat. For example:

  • $20,000 boats cost about $300 annually to insure
  • $50,000 boats cost about $750 annually to insure
  • $100,000 boats cost about $1,500 annually to insure
  • $500,000 boats cost about $7,500 annually to insure
  • $2 million boats, like yachts, cost about $30,000 annually to insure
  • If you are looking for boat insurance for older boats , costs will vary significantly

The cost of your boat insurance might not be this simple to figure out, though. For more help calculating the cost of your premiums, use our boat insurance calculator or reach out to an independent insurance agent for a quote.

What Factors Influence Boat Insurance Costs?

Like any form of coverage, boat insurance costs depend on several factors, including:

The make, model, and value of your boat

Your boat's make, model, and value influence the cost of boat insurance because the more expensive your boat is to replace or repair, the more expensive your coverage must be. If your boat is valued at less than $20,000, you will pay approximately the average cost in your state. If your boat is valued above $500,000, you might pay up to 2,250% of the average cost in your state.

Your boat's length

Boat insurance costs also depend on the length of your boat. Be prepared to pay about 66% more for your coverage if your boat is 100 feet or longer, but if your boat is less than 20 feet, you may pay 12% less than average rates in your state.

Your boating records

If you've had six or more accidents or violations within the past five years, you can expect a 90% increase in your boat insurance premiums. However, if you've had no incidents during this time, you can expect a 40% decrease in your boat insurance premiums.

Your location

Boat insurance premiums vary considerably by the state you live in. Many factors can influence insurance costs by location, including crime rates, property values, and more.

How you use your boat

Depending on the risk level of the activities you perform with or on your boat, your premiums may be higher or lower. Using a boat for towing can be riskier than using it just for fishing, so boats used for fishing would be likely to have lower boat insurance premiums.

How often you use your boat

Similar to auto insurance, how often you use your boat can also influence your boat insurance rates, because the more you use it, the more likely an accident or other disaster is to occur. For boats that only get taken out on occasion, premiums for boat insurance can be much lower than those that get used daily on the water.

An independent insurance agent can provide you with quotes for boat insurance from several carriers near you.

What Discounts on Boat Insurance Exist?

Many insurance companies offer several discounts on boat insurance to help lower the cost of your premiums. Here are just a few common boat insurance discounts:

  • Boater safety course discount: You might qualify for a discount on boat insurance if you complete a state-approved boater safety course.
  • Bundling discount: Many insurance companies offer discounts if you bundle your boat insurance with another policy through them, such as auto insurance or home insurance.
  • Paid-in-full discount: Many insurance companies lower your overall premium if you pay for your entire year's worth of coverage up-front.
  • Homeowners discount: Some insurance companies even offer discounts on your boat insurance just for being a homeowner, even if your coverage is not through the same carrier.
  • Clean boating history discount: You're likely to be rewarded with a boat insurance discount by many carriers if you've maintained a clean, accident and violation-free boating record.

Your independent insurance agent is a great ally in helping you find any discounts you may qualify for on boat insurance, no matter which carrier you go through.

What Does Boat Insurance Cover?

Boat insurance provides a lot of important protection, not only for your boat, but also for you, your passengers, and everyone else on the water or at the marina. Boat insurance typically includes the following primary coverages:

Types of boat coverage.

  • Personal property damage:  Provides reimbursement for your boat, trailer, and engine if they're damaged by a covered peril like vandalism, fire, etc.
  • Medical payments:  Provides reimbursement for treatment of injuries to you and your passengers who get hurt by your boat or while on your boat.
  • Property damage liability: Provides reimbursement of property damage lawsuit costs from third parties due to your boat.
  • Bodily injury liability:  Provides reimbursement for injuries to anyone who gets physically harmed by your boat.

The following coverages are commonly added to standard boat insurance:

  • Uninsured/underinsured boaters:  Covers injury expenses if the other boater is responsible but doesn’t have any, or enough, insurance to cover your expenses.
  • Fishing equipment:  Sometimes included, you'll be reimbursed up to a certain limit, like $1,000.
  • Water sports liability: Some policies exclude water sports from your liability coverage and some don't, but this coverage is important if you'll be doing stunts, etc.
  • Emergency assistance on the water:  Also known as boat towing insurance, coverage provides water towing and other assistance services through a maritime dispatch center.
  • Roadside assistance for your boat and trailer:  This coverage guarantees that the towing company will take your vehicle, boat, and trailer to the nearest facility if you get stranded on the road.

If you have questions or concerns based on your plans on the water, it's best to talk to your independent insurance agent. They can help you find and increase coverage so that it works best for you.

Important Additional Coverages for Boats

Beyond the common coverages, it's always recommended to consider additional coverages that can help tailor the policy to your unique risks. Here are several optional boat insurance coverages worth considering:

  • Collision: Provides coverage for collisions between your watercraft and other vessels or objects. You're also covered if your boat capsizes on the water.
  • Comprehensive:  Covers other disasters beyond collision like theft, vandalism, storm damage, and more.
  • Hurricane hauling services:  Covers the cost of moving your watercraft out of the county where it's docked in case of emergency.
  • Personal property coverage:  Personal property is usually covered under your homeowners policy, even when the boat isn't at your house. However, your deductible is often higher, so you can add personal property coverage on your boat policy to avoid a homeowners claim.
  • Wreckage and fuel removal:  Reimburses cost to recover or destroy wreckage and fuel if you get in an accident.
  • Replacement cost or agreed value:  Newer and more expensive boats can be insured for agreed value, which means you'll recover the full amount you paid for it, without depreciation.
  • Pet coverage:  If you boat with a pet on board, this provides up to $1,000 towards veterinarian fees if they're injured on the boat.

An independent insurance agent can recommend the additional boat insurance coverages that are a good match for you.

What Is Boat Rental Insurance Coverage?

Boat rental insurance is often required by boat rental companies to protect against lawsuits that may arise when you operate a rented vessel. If a third party sues you for claims of bodily injury or property damage when you're operating a rented boat and you don't have boat rental insurance, you'll have to pay out of pocket for your defense and settlement costs.

What Boat Insurance Will Pay For

Before settling on a boat insurance policy, it's important to understand just what it will reimburse you for and what it won't. Here's a breakdown for further clarification.

If you still have questions about what's covered or not covered by boat insurance, your independent insurance agent can help.

Finding Discounts and Savings on Boat Insurance

Fortunately, there are typically several discounts available for boat insurance. While options vary by insurance company, here are some common discounts:

  • No claims history discount: If you've never filed a claim on your boat insurance, your carrier is likely to reward you with a discount over time.
  • Diesel-powered boat discount: Some boat insurance companies offer discounts for watercraft with diesel-powered engines.
  • Safety course discount: You might be eligible to receive a discount on your boat insurance if you complete a state-approved safety course.
  • Bundling discount: Often you can save money on boat insurance if you bundle it with another type of coverage, such as home insurance, through the same carrier.

An independent insurance agent is your greatest ally when it comes to finding discounts on boat insurance.

Why Choose an Independent Insurance Agent?

Independent insurance agents simplify the process by shopping and comparing insurance quotes for you. Not only that, but they’ll also cut through the jargon and clarify the fine print so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Independent insurance agents also have access to multiple insurance companies, ultimately finding you the best boat insurance, accessibility, and competitive pricing while working for you.

More Choices

Our independent insurance agents work for you, not the insurance companies. That means you always get the best coverage options to choose from.

What our customers are saying

Work Done For Me

I looked at different individual companies, but it was so time-consuming to fill out each individual application and keep track of them all. Trusted Choice got back to me quickly and gave me an option that worked. I ended up with Travelers, which has a great price. The online process was pretty easy. Plus, they did the legwork for me. It was a great experience.

Multiple Options

I tried finding insurance myself but I wasn't coming up with very much. I contacted Trusted Choice and they looked at various options and presented it to me. Everything with the agent went very smoothly... He knew exactly what we wanted and searched accordingly. I was able to choose the one that I thought was best so it worked out for me. I'm happy that I did it that way.

I needed insurance for the home that I was buying and based on the pricing, I went with Trusted Choice. The process was all done online and I didn't really have to do too much. The website was also easy to use and navigate and it was not overly intimidating. Everybody that I've dealt with also seemed good and professional. It was a positive experience.

One-On-One Attention

Every year I search for insurance to make sure that I’m getting the best bang for my dollar. I went with an independent agent because if I go through them, I get that one-on-one instead of being just a number.... The experience was great.

Really Helpful was real helpful when I needed to get insurance. The agent gave me the basics of what I'd be getting if I got insurance with them.

Multiple Agents

I needed a different independent agent to get insurance and I went with Trusted Choice. Their website was helpful in connecting me to two or three other agents that I was able to speak to. Their site did what I needed.

More Coverage

Trusted Choice's online process is super easy. They pulled most of the information and I ended up going with one of their recommendations. Aside from them, everybody else was too expensive. Plus, the Trusted Choice agent offered more coverage.

Great Match

Everybody at was helpful and pleasant. They set us up with a great match and gave us our best option and price.

Best Coverage and Rates

I did a lot of searching for insurance and I went with a Trusted Choice agent because they provided the best rates and coverage. I haven't had a claim but I know I'm covered and that's good news. I would recommend Trusted Choice.

These are the best 5 boat insurance companies to cover your boat

Boat insurance can help protect your watercraft and your wallet..

Whether you have a speedboat, small fishing boat, yacht, sailboat or other type of watercraft, if you're a boat owner, chances are that you need some sort of insurance coverage for your vessel.

While only two states (Arkansas and Utah) require boat insurance , having coverage can help protect you financially if your boat is damaged, stolen or it's injured someone — either in the water or on land. You also may be required to carry boat insurance by your marina where you park your boat, or your lender if you have a boat loan .

A homeowners insurance policy may cover some damage to a boat, but it will likely not be sufficient coverage for many larger boats.

Here, CNBC Select  rounds up the five best boat insurance companies based on coverage, availability and ease of use (see  our methodology  for more information on how we made this list).

Best boat insurance companies

  • Best for bundling : Geico
  • Best for specialty boats : Markel
  • Best for discounts : Progressive
  • Best for high-value boats : Chubb
  • Best for a wide variety of boats : Foremost

Best for bundling

Geico boat insurance.

The best way to estimate your costs is to request a quote

Policy highlights

Geico has teamed up with BoatUS (Boat Owners Association of the United States) to offer insurance to recreational boaters in all 50 states and Washington, DC. Its standard policies include options for both agreed hull value and actual cash value, as well as liability only policies.

App available

  • Wide variety of coverage options with additional add-ons available
  • Available in all 50 states and Washington, DC
  • Few discounts listed online

Geico offers boat insurance policies through BoatUS that cover many types of boats and scenarios. Its policies include helpful features like discounts for completing boat safety courses and optional add-ons like boat towing assistance, disappearing deductibles and coverage for your fishing equipment. Geico is rated highly for customer satisfaction and financial strength, also taking top spots in CNBC Select's rankings for best car insurance and best home and auto insurance bundles .

Best for specialty boats

Markel boat insurance.

Known for insuring niche products like boats, Markel's boat insurance is a strong option for the breadth of boats covered by its policies and the depth of coverage available. Markel policies include protection against theft, wreckage removal and emergency towing. It can also include coverage like tournament fee reimbursement and trailer and boat lift coverage.

  • Specialty coverage for fishing, including equipment coverage and tournament reimbursement
  • With few other policies available, limited opportunities for bundling

Markel offers coverage for a variety of specialty items, including boats. Its coverage is an especially strong option for those who use their boats for fishing, with some unique perks and coverage for things like tournament fees and fishing equipment. Markel has several discounts available to customers and offers special policies for personal watercraft and yachts. It also offers commercial policies if you use your boat for charters or excursions.

Best for discounts

Progressive boat insurance.

Progressive covers a wide variety of boats under 50 feet long and at or below $500,000 in value. It also offers several discounts for those who bundle their policies, take a safety course or are the watercraft's original owner.

  • Affordable on-water towing coverage is available
  • 10 discounts for boat owners
  • Many age, value and material resctrictions on boats covered

Progressive is a strong choice for its boat coverage, covering a variety of boats valued under $500,000 and up to 50 feet long. Progressive stands out for offering competitive rates with 10 different boat insurance discounts, including discounts for paying in full, completing a safety course and getting quotes in advance. Optional policy add-ons include replacement cost coverage, hurricane haul out and Sign & Glide, which covers emergency services like on-water towing and jump starts.

Best for high-value boats

Chubb boat insurance.

Chubb is known for its coverage of high-value property and items and its boat insurance offerings are no different. Chubb offers boat coverage for pleasure boats up to 35 feet. Boat insurance coverage through this insurer caters to high-net-worth clients, and includes coverage for things like scuba gear and water skis and even high-end coolers.

  • Coverage for most watercraft up to 35 feet
  • May not be a good fit for those looking for a basic policy

Chubb is ideal for those insuring large or expensive boats or yachts. Creating policies to cater to those with higher-value properties and items, this insurer can cover luxury pleasure boats 35 feet and less. Chubb's unique, tailored coverage could be a good fit for clients who have an expensive boat with high-dollar items on board. It also offers unique services for yacht owners like complimentary background screenings on crew members, travel briefings and discounted rates on security services.

Best for a wide variety of boats

Foremost boat insurance.

With Foremost boat insurance, you get the same reliable coverage you would get through Farmers. Foremost offers coverage for a wide variety of watercraft, from fishing boats to cruisers. It also offers several discounts to customers, including a discount for paying in full.

  • Variety of boats are eligible for coverage
  • Several discounts available
  • Online quotes take two to three business days

As a Farmers Insurance company, Foremost offers coverage with the same great strength as its name-brand parent company. Foremost's boat insurance serves a wide range of boat types, from fishing boats to performance boats. With coverage available in all 50 states, it is a strong choice for many boat owners. Foremost also has multiple discounts available, such as for boat owners over 55, as well as special coverage options for USAA members.

What does most boat insurance cover?

Boat insurance generally covers the following:

  • Liability coverage that can pay for damages that you're found responsible for
  • Uninsured/underinsured boaters
  • Medical payments for you and your passengers
  • Specialty equipment or personal property onboard a boat

However, every policy is unique so it's important to review your policy to see what exactly is and is not covered.

Does boat insurance cover hurricanes?

Boat insurance can cover damage sustained from weather-related events, such as hurricanes, but it's not always included by default — it may be an optional add-on to your policy. Some insurers will also help cover the cost of moving your vessel out of danger during a hurricane advisory.

How much is boat insurance?

The average boat insurance premium is about 1.5% of the boat's insured value according to Bankrate . However, other factors like your credit score and location (and the length of the boating season there) can affect the amount you pay, too.

What are the three main types of boat insurance?

There are three types of boat insurance: actual cash value insurance, agreed value insurance and total replacement value insurance. Actual cash value policies pay for replacement cost minus depreciation if you have a claim, and are generally the most affordable. Agreed value insurance has an agreed-upon amount that the owner will receive if the boat is considered to be a total loss. Meanwhile, total replacement value insurance replaces damages with new items without considering depreciation.

Is it worth getting boat insurance?

Boat insurance can repair or replace a boat, and could be a useful tool for those with larger, powered boats. While smaller boats like a canoe or kayak may be covered under a homeowners insurance policy, a boat insurance policy can protect a larger and more expensive vessel, and make sure your finances aren't impacted if you're found liable for damages.

Bottom line

While boat insurance isn't required in every situation, having coverage can help ensure smooth sailing for you in a number of ways. Boat insurance can protect both your investment in your watercraft and your finances if you're involved in an accident. To find the best deal for you, it's important to get quotes from several insurers and compare them.
