Conditions at Hamilton Island during Race Week vary as is typical of the time of the year in August. Generally, medium trade winds perfect for sailing and racing in this island paradise. Occasionally we get stronger winds which make the racing all the more interesting as do very light winds which we also experience.

Having attended a number of sailing trips organised by Sailing Adventures, I thought I should pen you a note of thanks. Your overall organising, the great company, the food (!), and the warm hospitality are just first rate. I would also like to commend ‘Pozz’ (Brian) for his first rate seamanship that makes everyone feel so secure in all sailing conditions. I remember that while watching a movie called ‘White Squall’, which has a sad ending, I had thought ‘how difficult it would be to entrust the lives of your children to a crew and captain’ – well, I can honestly say I would have no qualms entrusting my children to a Sailing Adventures trip – but they have to be put to work! T Thanks again for great sailing memories.
Thank you for a truly great Sailing Adventures experience at Hamilton Island. The organisation of the event was excellent and the food was superb. The experience was enhanced even more by the careful way that you ensured the interaction of all the participants on their sailing adventure. I'll be back!
It has been great to have been able to participate in most of the week long group events organised by you around Hamilton Island Race Week over the past ten years. The efforts put into planning, organising and making the events enjoyable has been consistently successful. The theme of each event has been different but with an underlying objective of encouraging participants to discover the many and varied ways that individuals and business organisations can interact and learn. At the conferences, I have enjoyed the camaraderie with others with diverse interests and I have seen that almost everyone involved has had the opportunity to build relationships and gain insights into how many of the others attending were able to achieve a successful outcome for themselves or their business.
The leadership course during Hamilton Island Race Week offers the chance to improve sailing skills in racing conditions and learn from business leaders attending the well organised workshops. Provision of full catering and fully serviced cruising yachts mean participants can concentrate fully on the workshops and the sailing. An added bonus is the spectacle of world class racing yachts competing at the regatta. The top level sailing tuition and informality of the workshops have allowed me to learn new skills and develop genuine friendships.
Great sailing, great rivalry, great communion/fellowship and it was a shame to leave and come home. There is little to  add. I would like to thank all conference participants for the spread of knowledge and enlightenment. Once again I got more from the speakers and subsequent discussion than the sailing  - it was only a small margin!!! Congratulations to Pozz and Cath for continuing the traditions and even enhancing them with the new trophy (thanks Rod) and events. All participants were delighted with the smooth organisation, especially the food and drinks.
Conventional yacht racing wisdom would say that being competitive on the water and having plenty of fun afterwards are mutually exclusive at a regatta  (just ask the crews of the high performance boats at the pointy end of the fleet who are often under curfew after 8pm and tucked up in bed by 10). Sailing Adventures defies this logic by providing an extremely well managed combination of great competition afloat and a five star entertainment experience ashore, with great food, wine and most importantly, great company.
Hamo Race Week is always a great time. The sailing is fun... exhilarating, but always with the right priority given to safety, leadership and teamwork. The week also provides the opportunity to meet friends, network and have fun, particularly in the evenings which are great social occasions without being overly organised. I should add that the entire week is very well organised which  only happens because the effort the Sailing Adventurers team put into looking after us in every respect from the accommodation, sea-faring lunches, culinary delights of a night and ensuring everyone has fun.
I have attended Hamilton Island Race week several times but never had such a great experience as with CEO1/Sailing Adventures. It was superbly organised and exceptional in terms of excellent accommodation; dining and interacting each night with the whole group and of course the sailing activities to support the underlying training and personal development. I especially enjoyed mixing with such an interesting range of people who have so much to share over the period, and listening to the presentations each night and associated long discussions that followed in such a collegial setting. The leadership and team building aspects of the sailing activities proved to be insightful and very well crafted which is a credit to CEO1/Sailing Adventures. I also have built some lasting relationships from this unique environment and event and will be attending again, which is probably the best recommendation I can give CEO1/Sailing Adventures..

Hamilton Island Race Regatta

Hamilton Island Race Regatta

Another exciting sailing race week concludes in the beautiful Whitsundays.  The 29 th annual Hamilton Island sailing regatta, held 23-31 August, provided lots of competitive sailing racing, but also lots of off-water fun, dinners and partying in this bluewater island playground.

The Hamilton Island sailing regatta is the largest off-shore regatta in Australia. The race week was launched by the Bob Oatley, (of Wild Oats II yacht fame, and oh, he owns Hamilton Island), followed by a spectacular fireworks display.

The regatta program includes the Grand Prix category for top-class racers, plus several other classes for cruising yachts, performance yachts and sports boat classes.

Marcus Blackmore’s Sydney based “Hooligan”, was crowned Hamilton Island Race Week Class A winner. The championship is endorsed and scored by Yachting Australia.

Eastcoast Sailing offers corporate sailing regatta’s on Sydney Harbour.  These sailing events are great for customers, as well as staff.  Regattas are also popular for team building events.  Our professional skippers provide fun friendly tuition, and can as competitive as the crew wish.

9 August 2018

Yacht racing regattas and superyacht charter often go hand in hand and for good reason – the weather conditions to produce great racing also produce wonderful cruising.  Following this winning formula, the Hamilton Island Race Week will return to the Whitsunday Islands from the 18 to 25 August 2018 coinciding with the peak superyacht charter season for the region.

Those looking to charter in the Whitsunday Island and Great Barrier Reef during this time can also catch the excitement of Wild Oats XI race against leading racing syndicates whilst the humpback whale migration happens around them.  It is not all serious racing as there are a number of events on Hamilton Island including dinners hosted by leading Australian chef, Neil Perry; Piper-Heidsieck Champagne lunches; and the Paspaley Pearls beachside luncheon.

Image courtesy of Hamilton Island Race Week

Aside from the excitement of the racing, the Whitsunday Islands are the jewels in the crown of the Great Barrier Reef. The 74 islands provide great protection for those interested in snorkelling and diving the coral which rims them.  Guests can visit the fine, pristine white sands of Whitehaven Beach which consistently ranks as one of the world’s best beaches.

After a short journey out to the reef, superyacht charter guests can experience the largest living structure on the planet, the Great Barrier Reef .  August through December is the best season for experiencing the reef as the marine life is at its most prolific and the coral is most vibrant.

What better way to witness some of the best of Australia’s competitive sailors in an island paradise surrounded by UNESCO World Heritage reef than on a luxury superyacht?  This year the following yachts within the Ocean Alliance fleet will be on location and ready for charter during race week:

AURORA , IMPULSIVE and ONEWORLD

Hamilton Island Race Week

Quick links, stay connected, popular news, best bakeries in queensland, full day winery tours gold coast, full day winery tours brisbane, planning a romantic getaway.

Hamilton Island race week  has been a highlight of the Australian racing calendar since 1983. It was conceived by David Hutcheon who moved to the Whitsundays with his yacht “Banjo Patterson” which still operates from Hamilton Island as a charter boat. He joined with the then owner of the island Keith Williams to host an annual  sailing . regatta. The first race year was in 1984 and a fleet of 93 boats participated. Originally race week was held in April however for better weather conditions it has been moved to August and has been run then since 1992. The race is now one of the most important yachting events on the Australian yacht racing calendar and has more participants than any other regatta.

Race week consists of four major races and there are up to nine classes of boats allowed to participate. These classes mean that the yachts pitted against other yachts of equal calibre to ensure the fairest results. Both racing yachts and cruising yachts are welcome to join in the fun. All IRC handicapped boats must hold a valid IRC rating certificate.

Most people live aboard their yacht at  Hamilton Island marina  during race week however Hamilton Island resort can assist with accommodation for those who wish to stay ashore. Many berth at the marina which becomes a really busy place. Facilities at the marina include showers, toilets, laundry, internet and repairs. You do not need to book a berth during race week however there will always be a certain amount of rafting required due to the large numbers of participants. Marina berths are free for contestants.

If you need any further information about race week don’t hesitate to ask us and we can also help to arrange things like resort stays if you require. Hamilton Island Race Week is a special event not to be missed by any serious yachtsman so come and have a great time. Sunsail Yacht Charters  have bareboats available for you to charter during race week which makes a great live aboard and viewing platform option.

Flawless white sandy beaches, the earth’s oldest living rainforest, world-class diving, stunning tropical islands, bustling cosmopolitan cities.

Hamilton Island Race Week

Hamilton island wrap up.

What do your Manly Sailing instructors get up to in winter?  …. They go NORTH, sailing up the coast and racing in the 36th edition of Hamilton Island Race week

Onur boarded  Rumba  – a Northshore 370 from MYHC – for a 1,120 NM passage from Sydney to Hamilton Island in 17 days. One of the best adventures of his life despite having to deal with rigging damage and 4 days without any instruments.

James took up the same passage on board  Savannah Girl  – a Swan 46 from MYC and left Sydney with a light breeze out of the south west affording speeds of 7-9 knots under sail and ended at the end of Hamilton Island Race week with a 5th place division finish. Flying a top-down furled spinnaker on a historic swan was an experience for the ages where we saw 10.3 knots boat speed downwind!!

Xavier joined the crew of mighty  Corum  – a Mumm36 from MYC – and another 200 plus boats and over 2000 sailors enjoying sporty, bumpy, and glamourous conditions in Hamilton Island. Over a week of on shore and on water actions, and intense racing around the beautiful Whitsundays islands, he tested his skills and experience on the foredeck of this light racing yacht.

A fantastic experience for all. Can’t wait for next year.

Yacht Boat News

Hamilton Island Race Week

Photo of YachtBoatNews

The internationally acclaimed Hamilton Island Race Week will be contested on the tropical waters around Hamilton Island from August 19 – 26, 2023.

A longstanding feature of the east coast sailing calendar, Race Week 2023 has so far drawn 170 entries and a steady influx is pushing that number quickly towards 200.

Among the fleet are first-time entrants who have seen the incredible images and vision of trade wind sailing and heard the stories from fellow yachties – and decided to get among the action.

West Australian yachtsman Rob Appleyard recently returned to sailing after a period away from the sport. Originally, he planned to charter a boat but that proved challenging, then the idea of buying hit him during a bout of illness and boredom.

Appleyard spotted a Fast 40+ in Turkey that appeared to fit the bill, until he made the trip overseas. While he was travelling one hit the market, remarkably back in his hometown of Fremantle.

“I looked at it in the morning and by the afternoon I owned it,” said Appleyard. “It’s certainly an undertaking trucking a boat like Secret Weapon to the Whitsundays and back, but I’ve never been to Hamilton Island Race Week, only heard a lot about it. Finally, after many decades, I’ll be there and part of the Rating Series, hoping to take it up to Ray Roberts and his champion Team Hollywood crew.”

Sydney yachtsman Michael Fountain has done more Race Weeks than he has fingers and toes. This August, the veteran will be part of a brand new campaign with a well-known moniker. His father-in-law Gerry Hatton has just taken delivery of his latest Mills-design built in Turkey, this time a Mat 1220 called Bushranger.

“The lighter contemporary design is an all-round race boat, but the principles of Bushranger haven’t changed,” says Fountain. “We have fun and sail well, and the results look after themselves.”

Regulars such as the Clintons’ NSW Beneteau Holy Cow!, Craig Watson’s Queensland Beneteau Coopers and the Oatley family’s maxi Wild Oats XI have signed on to contest the 38th edition of Race Week, which caters for a wide spectrum of boats, from grand prix racing yachts and cruiser racers to multihulls and trailables.

Matched to perfect outdoor winter conditions is an exciting new onshore festival of food, wine and daily entertainment for sailors and their guests. Tickets will open on 15 June via the website.

Island CEO Peter Brulisauer and the Oatley family are proud to host the annual event, which attracts sailors and sailing enthusiasts from all over the world.

“We are delighted to once again welcome back sailors and supporters to Hamilton Island Race Week,” said Brulisauer. “This event embodies our island’s passion for sailing, world-class hospitality and celebrates our stunning natural surrounds. We are committed to providing an exceptional experience for all participants and we look forward to witnessing the competitive spirit and camaraderie that this event fosters among the sailing community.”
