El-Mahrousa yacht: A history entwined with the Suez Canal

Zeinab el-gundy , thursday 6 aug 2015.

The presidential yacht was the first ship to cross the Suez Canal in 1869, and will be the first vessel to pass through the new extension on Thurdsay

Mahrousa yacht

At the heart of the preparations for the upcoming inauguration of the new Suez Canal waterway on Thursday the 150-year-old presidential yacht, El-Mahrousa, stands out because of its long association with the Suez Canal.

The yacht earned its spot in Egyptian history when it became the first ship to pass through the Suez Canal after the waterway was opened in November 1869. Aboard the ship were Egypt's ruler Khedive Ismail and a number of royal guests.

Mahrousa yacht 1

The ship is the oldest active yacht in the world, and the seventh largest.

El-Mahrousa is still in service, and on Thursday it will carry President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and his guests from all over the world along the new waterway, the largest-ever addition to the canal.

Many Egyptians still associated El-Mahrousa with the Suez Canal and with Egypt's former royal family, but the history of the ship goes beyond those associations.

The story of the yacht began in 1863 when Egypt's ruler, Khedive Ismail, ordered the British shipbuilding pioneers the Samuda brothers, who were based in London, to build him a royal yacht. The luxurious vessel was designed by Oliver Lang, who designed Queen Victoria's first steam yacht, with the aim of being a state-of-the-art ocean-going steamer.

In August 1865 , the 411-foot and 5-floor vessel was handed over to its Egyptian crew, who sailed it from the River Thames to Alexandria.

Two years later the yacht embarked on its first official mission, transferring Egyptian troops to aid the Ottoman forces that were cracking down on the Cretan revolt in Greece.

The strong historical bond between the yacht and the Suez Canal began in 1869, before the canal was opened. Early in the year Khedive Ismail took his yacht on a tour of Europe to invite kings, queens and emperors of the continent to attend the inauguration of the Suez Canal.

In November 1869, El-Mahrousa became the first ship to officially pass through the newly inaugurated waterway.

Onboard alongside the khedive was Eugénie de Montijo, empress of France and wife of Napoleon III, who gave the khedive a piano as a gift. It is still located on the yacht today.

Other well-known figures who have been on board include Reza Pahlavi, the shah of Iran; King Abdelaziz Al-Saud, the founder of the kingdom of Saudi Arabia; Josip Tito, ruler of Yugoslavia, and Menachem Begin, Israeli prime minister.

A witness to Egypt's modern history

In a small note of historical irony, the yacht in 1879 carried the man who commissioned its construction, Khedive Ismail, to his exile in Italy, after he was ousted by his son Khedive Tawfik.

In 1914, the ship played the same role once again, taking Khedive Abbas Helmi II to his exile in Turkey.

The biggest irony of all was on 26 July 1952, when El-Mahrousa carried the last king to rule Egypt, Farouk I, and his infant son, Ahmed Fouad II, in favour of whom he abdicated, to their exile in Italy, thus witnessing the final chapter of the royal dynasty of Mohamed Ali.

Mahrousa yacht

In the newly founded republic, El-Mahrousa was renamed El-Horreya, meaning freedom, but the new name was little-used by ordinary people. Assigned to the Egyptian navy where it was docked at Ras El-Tin naval base in Alexandria , El-Horreya continued to play an active role, including transporting president Gamal Abdel-Nasser to many places.

El-Horreya

The yacht was also frequently used by president Sadat on important events and trips.

In June 1975, the ship was once again the first to pass along the Suez Canal at the huge celebrations marking the reopening of the channel for naval movement following its closure after the 1967 and 1973 wars.

Sadat

The following year the ship took part in the celebrations marking the bicentennial of the US, crossing the ocean.

In September 1979, Sadat made a famous trip to Yafa on board the El-Horreya, during the peace talks between Egypt and Israel.

In December 1980 Sadat made one final trip on board the ship, as it was the first vessel to pass through the newly inaugurated expansion of the Suez Canal.

Under former president Hosni Mubarak, the ship was less active. Instead, the Egyptian navy would use it in ceremonies to mark the graduation of students from the naval academy.

In 2000, Mubarak decided to changed the name of the ship back to El-Mahrousa.

El-Mahrousa

Renovating El-Mahrousa

The five-floor yacht has undergone major alternations in its 150 years.

In 1872 , it was lengthened by 40 feet. In 1905, it was subject to a major rebuild in Scotland where it was lengthened by another 16.5 feet and its two paddle-wheels were replaced by steam turbines.

In 1912 , a telegraph was installed on the ship.

In 1919 El-Mahrousa underwent another major alternation in UK, so that it was powered by diesel oil instead of coal. This required that the ship be lengthened for a third time, this time by 27 feet.

Change the livery and she would look much better. Blue funnel with an Egyptian eagle on the funnel... and a swirl of the Egyptian colours around the bow... black/white/green. Nice. Everyone else seems to be going for this!

Btw, floors on ships are called DECKS, and she is not carrying any amount of tons either. Maybe we should not quote ignorant journalists on this shipping site, thank you. Rgds, Manfred

Feel free to complain to the Cairo Post, by all means. Whilst we're being needlessly critical, the expression is 'Hear hear' not 'Here here' derived from the fuller expression 'Hear him, hear him' used in the 1800's. But what do I know.

Dartskipper

Assuming the extra 40ft was worked in forward of the original superstructure, I'm not convinced that it works. Looks like a dodgy cut and shut job from one of those repair shops in the back streets of Cairo. Roy.

Well the lengthening cannot have been too bad a job as she's still looking good 43 years later and during that time has undertaken a trans Atlantic crossing to New York, in about 1977 I believe. Clive

Nothing wrong with her livery - a classical yacht should be white and have a yellow funnel /superstructure.

Sisi sails into Suez on swanky yacht

SUEZ, EGYPT - AUGUST 06: The Mahrousa pulls away from the dock at during the opening ceremony of the new Suez Canal expansion including a new 35km (22 mile) channel on August 6, 2015 in Suez, Egypt. The new channel of the Suez Canal was finished in a year at a cost of 8 billion USD and is designed to increase the speed and capacity of ships. The new branch is being celebrated as a major nationalist project. (Photo by David Degner/Getty Images).

It should have come as no surprise that Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi chose to board the former royal yacht al-Mahrousa  to inaugurate the New Suez Canal . Al-Mahrousa is one of the longest, largest and most prestigious yachts in the world, leading Sisi to deem it appropriate for the occasion, one of the biggest events in Egypt’s modern history. The president had to assume the ceremony would make international headlines, displaying Egypt’s greatness to the world.

On July 31, al-Mahrousa set sail from Alexandria for Port Said to await the Aug. 6 inauguration of the waterway's new lane . It was the first vessel to pass through it. Al-Mahrousa is the only vessel to have been present at the inauguration of both canal lanes. Khedive Ismail Pasha  was on board the yacht Nov. 16, 1869, along with invited  European leaders , when it became the first ship to pass through the original canal  at its  opening ceremony . The ship would traverse the canal again 146 years later, the first after the canal's reopening  on June 5, 1975, following its closure in 1967 as a result of the June War against Israel.

Having had kings, queens and dignitaries from all over the world on its decks, the SS Mahroussa makes a comeback over a century after its building as Egypt inaugurates the new Suez Canal.

Mahroussa: the Super Yacht That Refused to Die

The SS Mahroussa royal yacht was the first vessel to cross the Suez Canal when it opened in 1869. Joining Khedive Ismail on board was none other than the Empress France and wife of Napoleon III, the Emperor of Austria, the Crown Prince of Germany, among other European Royalty. With that in mind it seemed fitting that President Sisi announced that he too would celebrate the inauguration of the new Canal with world leaders aboard this century old yacht, and since Egypt’s in celebratory mood, we decided to look into the rich history of Egypt’s proudest ship.

Before the inauguration of the Suez Canal, Khedive Ismail commissioned the building of a boat that could compare to the accomplishment of building the Suez Canal in 1863. He enlisted Oliver Lang and the Samuda Brothers of Poplar, London, to construct the massive yacht, to the lead ships in the procession of boats to cross during the inauguration. At the time, the super yacht was considered among the largest, if not the biggest, ship and was the pride of the Egyptian Navy in Alexandria. The five floor super yacht had the capacity to carry 160 crew members and seemed to be used in one of three ways in its history; to entertain world leaders, to exile Egypt’s royalty, and training Egypt’s Navy.

From Khedive Ismail to King Farouk and from President Nasser to President Sisi, all of Egypt’s leaders have found one reason or another to take this prestigious ship out for a spin. Even though it was the oldest armed yacht in the world, the SS Mahroussa wasn’t really used in war, as it was too expensive to risk its demise in battle and better suited for holding important meetings and impressing international guests. Equipped with multiple gardens, cannons, lounges, elevators, and even a garage the massive ship was used during the wedding of King Farouk sister to the Shah of Iran in 1939. The SS Mahroussa is likely the most expensive yacht built of its time and was indicative of Khedive Ismail lavish spending ways which ultimately bankrupted the country shortly thereafter.

As a result of bankrupting the nation Khedive Ismail was forced into exile in 1879 and it came as no surprise to anyone that he would choose to flee to Italy aboard the ship he commissioned. Proving to be the original trendsetter, the SS Mahroussa became the ship of choice for the exiled, as both Khedive Abbas Hilmi II and King Farouk left their country aboard it. The removal of Farouk marked the end of Egypt’s monarchy, and when President Nasser took over in the popular coup, he decided to rename the SS Mahroussa to Al-Horreya, and began training Egypt’s cadettes aboard it. This would continue until about 1974, and when Sadat became president, he loved the ship so much that he returned to using it to hold meetings and entertain world leaders, as well as riding aboard during the reopening of the Suez canal.

Normally, Egypt has the worst track record in terms of performing maintenance, however the SS Mahroussa seemed to be exception as it was split in half and increased by 40 feet in 1872, having its boilers changed in 1894, renewing the engine in 1905, installing a telegraphy in 1912, changing from coal to diesel in 1919, completed renovated in 1952, serviced in 1987, and likely restored for the inauguration of new Suez Canal. Comparing that with how often we renovate our museums, demonstrates just how much Egypt treasured this luxurious and historic vessel. It isn’t clear if or when the ship’s name was changed back from Al-Horreya to SS Mahroussa, however when the news was announced that it would be at the inauguration everyone seemed to revert back to calling it the Mahroussa.

With Egyptian pride at its highest level since the 2011 uprising, it comes as no surprise that President Sisi has decided to mark this impressive accomplishment aboard Egypt’s most important and historic super yacht. The fact that it survived a 150 years is almost as impressive as building a new canal in just a year. The inclusion of the Mahroussa in the festivities is just the icing on already delicious cake and will be a sight that Egyptians won’t soon forget.

l-Mahrousa yacht: A history entwined with the Suez Canal The presidential yacht was the first ship to cross the Suez Canal in 1869, and was the first vessel to pass through the new extension on Thursday 6 th August 2015. Mahrousa Yacht arriving at Port Said in its way to Suez Canal from Alexandria on 31 July 2015 (Photo Courtesy : Sameh Abdel Khalek) At the heart of the preparations for the inauguration of the new Suez Canal waterway last Thursday the 150-year-old presidential yacht, El-Mahrousa, stands out because of its long association with the Suez Canal. A photo for El-Mahrousa Yacht in its way to Syria carrying President Gamal Abdel Nasser in 1960 ( Photo : Al-Ahram Archives ) The ship is the oldest active yacht in the world, and the seventh largest. El-Mahrousa is still in service, and on Thursday it carried President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and his guests from all over the world along the new waterway, the largest-ever addition to the canal. On board alongside the khedive was Eugénie de Montijo, empress of France and wife of Napoleon III, who gave the khedive a piano as a gift. Not only a credit to her builders but also those who have maintained her throughout the years and updated the lifeboat davits as radial davits were still in use when she was built and she has the Mcpherson wind out type now (I think they were called McPherson or something like that)

My Dad met Farouk and his dad King Fuad of Egypt when they came to Bolton in the 1920s and spoke to him about the process of spinning. They visited the mill where my Dad worked, Musgrave Cotton Spinning Mill, the largest Cotton Spinning mill in the whole world at that time, Spinning Egyptian Cotton, the best cotton of all. employed over 3,000 workers then. Bolton was known throughout the world then as King Cotton. Closed down by Harold Wilson after his Lima Agreement in 1967, and all the machinery transferred to India. I worked in the same mill for a year in 1951, while waiting to go to the VINDI. Brian

Investigation found that Clarence Thomas took free yacht, helicopter trips in Russia: Democrats

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

A Senate Judiciary Committee investigation found that conservative Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas failed to disclose at least 35 luxury gifts, including a free yacht trip to Russia and a private helicopter to a palace in St. Petersburg, Vladimir Putin's hometown, Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., and Ron Wyden, D-Or., said  in a letter  to Attorney General Merrick Garland.

The letter raised the "serious possibility of tax fraud" and accused Thomas of having "secretly accepted gifts and income potentially worth millions of dollars," mostly from billionaire real estate developer Harlan Crow, who Thomas once described as being among his "dearest friends." Buried in appendix list on page 14 are the references to the Russia trips, which took place in 2003. Other gifts from Crow include "multiple instances of free private jet travel, yacht travel, and lodging," "gifts of tuition for Justice Thomas's grandnephew," "real estate transactions," "home renovations," and "free rent for Justice Thomas's mother."

“The Senate is not a prosecutorial body, and the Supreme Court has no fact-finding function of its own, making the executive role all the more important if there is ever to be any complete determination of the facts,” the letter reads.

After a bombshell ProPublica report last year that revealed the extent of Thomas' financial ties with Crow and attempts to hide it, Thomas admitted to taking three trips on a private plane owned by Crow, but did not disclose any of the other gifts.

The senators are asking Garland to launch a special counsel investigation into Thomas, with the evidence collected so far "plainly suggest[ing] that Justice Thomas has committed numerous willful violations of federal ethics and false-statement laws and raises significant questions about whether he and his wealthy benefactors have complied with their federal tax obligations."

In a separate move on Wednesday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and a group of fellow progressives filed articles of impeachment against Thomas and Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito for failing to disclose "millions of dollars in gifts from individuals with business before the court."

Italy's competition and consumer watchdog has announced an investigation into how Google gets users' consent in order to link their activity across different services for ad profiling, saying it suspects the adtech giant of "unfair commercial practices." In response to the Italian AGCM's investigation, a Google spokesperson told TechCrunch, "We will analyze the details of this case and will work cooperatively with the Authority."
