THE RMYC: A COLOURFUL AND EXCITING HISTORY

The Royal Motor Yacht Club Broken Bay is not only a Club of distinction, but a Club with a rich history of growth and significance in the Pittwater region.  Originally the Club was formed as a branch of the Motor Yacht Club of NSW Rose Bay, which was purchased early in 1927 in Horseshoe Cove, Newport (still the existing site).

wharf

His Majesty King George V conferred the right for the Motor Yacht of NSW Rose Bay, to use the prefix “Royal”. Subsequently the Broken Bay branch became the Royal Motor Yacht Club. The official opening of our first clubhouse, boat shed, wharf and slipway took place on 17th March 1928. The original clubhouse was built close to the seawall and was enjoyed for many years by members and the local boating fraternity. However, a fire brought forth new ideas and planning. In their re-thinking, Club executives decided the second clubhouse should be built further back, thus allowing cars to be parked between the seawall and the building alignment. In 1939 the land on the eastern side was bought for $200, thereby increasing the overall waterfrontage to approximately 500 feet. In 1942 with Australia heavily involved in the Pacific War, pleasure boating was curtailed because of petrol rationing. Many of the sizeable cruisers were confiscated for the Navy and saw service with the Naval Auxiliary Patrol. In 1947/48, the RMYC Broken Bay, like so many other organisations was “taking stock” after the War years. Progress was paramount and the Club was on the move again. Building and improvements continued gradually. On 15th March 1959, the swimming pool was opened and membership had grown to 354 active members. The Club was fast becoming known as the “family Club” where members could relax, swim and boat with family and friends. The RMYC Broken Bay was now one of the outstanding landmarks on Pittwater. A new lounge deck and bar was constructed and opened in 1964, which extended the clubhouse further. 1966 was perhaps the beginning of many mammoth constructions. Commodore Alan Leslie (Life Member 1970) could see only future growth and development for the Club and many successful projects were undertaken during his four years of leadership. The building of a new clubhouse started in April 1966 and was built around the old clubhouse, thus preserving the past with its fond memories. The official opening took place on 17th August 1968 and was performed by Lady Cutler, the wife of Patron and NSW State Governor, Sir Roden Cutler.

official opening

Boating activity was steadily increasing in New South Wales, particularly in Sydney. The demand for cruisers, runabouts and sailboats was astronomical, as was the demand for marina berths, dry storage and moorings. The southern marina with 91 berths was built in 1966. In July 1978, the first pile was driven for the western marina with 103 berths. Through the mid to late 1980’s, additional parking was created and the entrance road re-routed to allow construction of the Garden Forecourt and BBQ area. The 1990’s saw many improvements to Club facilities. A Club Divisional boat was purchased, the Club lounge balcony with its magnificient views was built and the Garden Forecourt was refurbished with a new BBQ and retractable awning. The fuel wharf adjoining the car park was rebuilt, along with the installation of attractive planter boxes, stainless steel handrails, game fishing weigh station, stainless steel flag pole and relocating the Starters’ Tower.

clubhouse

On the 8th October 2000, a fire caused extensive water and smoke damage throughout the clubhouse. A $1 million refurbishment program saw a new lounge bar with other areas of the Club being replaced as original. In 2001, the new Garden Bar and Brasserie was opened, complementing the modern, all-weather design of the Garden Forecourt. With a major marina development completed in 2004, the Club now provides 218 marina pens and 49 swing moorings. Currently there are plans for another marina upgrade with 40 new marina berths to be added.

Royal Motor Yacht Club Broken Bay continues to evolve to meet the ever changing needs of its members and guests.

Marina of the year award winners announced: royal motor yacht club broken bay named 'club of the year'.

royal motor yacht club broken bay

The 2021 Club Marine Marina of the Year Awards were held Wednesday May 26th at the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia which provided a stunning and very appropriate backdrop for the events.  A COVID capped, sell-out crowd of over 120 of the industry’s most prominent people enjoyed the event with dozens watching the live feed remotely.  Finalists who couldn’t make the trip from Western Australia, Singapore, New Zealand, Cairns and Airlie Beach all joined from their own satellite events via Zoom, with drinks in hand.

18 finalists were in the running for nine hotly contested awards and the recurring theme throughout the acceptance speeches was that the accolades are the result of teams, not assets or individuals.   As Phil McGowen CMM and Marina Manager so eloquently put it when accepting the Marina of the Year Award over 140 berths, for his 5 Gold Anchor Platinum accredited Birkenhead Point Marina, “this is not about the marina, it can’t win it, it is about the people who set this facility apart……it is the best marina in the world, we set the benchmark for Platinum Marinas”.   It was indeed a proud and emotional win for the entire team.

One of the most celebrated wins of the night went to the Club of the Year winner Royal Motor Yacht Club Broken Bay (RMYC BB).  In accepting the award, Commodore Chris Lee acknowledged that the RMYC BB has undergone a transformation in recent years to create what is now a vibrant, world-class boating lifestyle destination that caters to the needs of all boaters.  He again gave the credit to CEO Jayson McDonald who in true style, passed it on to his team who were all on stage sharing the moment.

In the other big awards, the bespoke Koolewong Marina on the Brisbane Water took out the Marina of the Year under 140 berths.   Owner Les Binkin, recognised the 16-year journey he had been on with his business partner Symantha Suprain when they first bought Marmong Point together before embarking on the development of Koolewong Marina from a greenfield site.  He too gave the credit to the team running the marina and caring for his customers. Les then announced to those present that he had sold the marina to Toby and Ned O’Neill, also in attendance, owners of the Point Piper and Rose Bay Marinas encouraging them to remain close to the MIA and benefit from the leadership and services offered by the peak body.

Andrew Fenwick, of Fenwicks Marina in Brooklyn NSW dedicated his Best Boatyard under 20 Boats to his father who passed away very recently.  Having developed the site with his father from a greenfield site in the 1970s, Andrew proudly shared the stage with his son Tim who joined the business seven years ago.  Andrew’s acceptance speech was a moving tribute to a true family business.

Sydney Harbour Boat Storage at White Bay 6 Marine Park on the shores of Balmain NSW, took out the Best Dry Stack Storage Facility award in recognition of its innovative customer service initiatives, ease of booking and exceptional culture around work health safety.  Lorraine Yates, General Manager sang the praises of the business benefits of going through the application process saying, “I would recommend to any marina to go through the Awards submission process as it is a great opportunity to really scrutinise your business performance against criteria and reflect on what is great about it and what can be improved.  We really enjoyed it.”

The coveted Marina World International Marina of the Year Award presented a difficult decision for the judges as the finalists, One15 Marina Sentosa Cove Singapore and Westhaven Marina in Auckland were both exceptional, but very different entries.  One15 Marina Sentosa Cove Singapore was announced as the winner and the very happy Marina Director James Roy was joined by Jonathan Sit Acting General Manager to accept the award, masked up and via Zoom.

In recognition of successive wins in their categories three of Queensland’s finest marine facilities Coral Sea Marina, Rivergate Marina & Shipyard and Crystalbrook Superyacht Marina were inducted into the Hall of Fame for successive wins in their categories.

The full list of Award winners and finalists for the Club Marine Marina of the Year Awards 2021 are:

  • Best Marina Restaurant: Waterside Bristro, Empire Marina Bobbin Head, NSW
  • Best Community Engagement: South of Perth Yacht Club, WA
  • Best Innovation by a Marina &/or Supplier: Gold Coast City Marina & Shipyard, QLD; finalist – Westhaven Marina, NZ

The international program has accredited over 200 marinas across 27 countries and is a joint venture initiative between the Marina Industries Association (MIA) and The Yacht Harbours Association (TYHA).  TYHA delivers the Program in the United Kingdom, Europe, Middle East, Africa and the Caribbean.  The MIA delivers the Program in Australia, Asia-Pacific and in the USA in association with the Marine Recreation Association (MRA). International Clean Marina & Fish Friendly

The International Clean Marina Program is an international, voluntary accreditation system for marinas, boatyards, and associated industry operators.  The goal of the Clean Marina Program is to reduce ‘non-point source pollution' associated with boating/marina facilities, and to promote clean water, clean air and thriving marina industry businesses. The program assists operators to protect and enhance inland and coastal waterways by leading them through an independently assessed accreditation process. The program involves an easy-to-follow system to develop valuable environmental management practices and rewards accredited operators with valuable business benefits.

Fish Friendly is an add on accreditation available to all certified Clean Marinas and has been developed to inform marina managers on how to maximise beneficial fish habitats.  Currently, there are over 60 accredited Clean Marinas and 35 Fish Friendly marinas in the country.  The program continues to grow as marinas realise the risk management benefits of the program and the goodwill it generates with all stakeholders.

This review is for the restaurant. I'm not from around here, so take my review with a grain of salt. The restaurant is pub style, where you order and pay at the counter, given a buzzer, and pick up your own food. Get your own water at the bar, and drinks. We put in reservations, so I was expecting table service, but that's on me. I had 1/2 dozen oysters, nice and creamy. SO had the seafood plate. Nice, typical Australian. Friendly staff. Best part seems to be the history of the yacht club itself. Think it would be a good spot to relax as a member.

What's not to love about the Royal motor. This place has it all. And now the pizza oven, delicious. Great spot for somewhere different breakie lunch or dinner. Staff friendly and they make a damn good cuppa to!

The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.

This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.

A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.

It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.

The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.

Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.

Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.

Sunrise Yachts, a luxury yacht building company which is based in Turkey, has been made a main sponsor of next year’s 2011 Moscow International Boat Show (MIBS). The four-day Russian yacht show event is currently scheduled to run from April 14-17 at the Moscow’s Crocus exhibition centre.

MIBS is organised by the ITE Group and it is one of Russia’s leading boat shows and is an internationally recognised superyacht event. The show covering everything from small parts and accessories to large superyacht with over 9,000 people and 178 exhibitors attended the last year show.

The Paolo Scanu-designed Sunrise 45 yacht is an ocean-going cruising yacht that was released in 2009 to much acclaim at this was the group’s first-ever model.

Sunrise Yachts was founded in 2007 by the German entrepreneur Herbert P Baum along with the French-British yacht builder Guillaume Roché. The luxury yacht group is based in Antalya, Turkey and utilises a 10,000sq m shipyard facility. Sunrise has two sheds measuring 100m (328ft) x 16m (53ft), as well as a 70m (230ft) x 16m (53ft) fully acclimatized paint shed that can accommodate new-build and refit projects up to 65m (213ft) in length and 1,200 tonnes displacement.

Along each side of the yacht-building facility, space is available for long-term sub-contractors with the latest equipment and logistics capabilities, along with air-conditioned storage, ventilation and extraction plants. The shipyard is organized as an “assembler,” based loosely on the car industry’s model, with a small, yet powerful project management team charged with running all the in-house long-term sub-contractors.

Welcome to the Broken Bay Game Fishing Club

  • Facebook::    Broken Bay Game Fishing Club

Based on Sydney’s northern beaches, the BBGFC is widely recognised as one of Australia’s premier game fishing clubs. As a division of the Royal Motor Yacht Club, our members have access not only to some sensational fishing grounds, but also to world-class facilities that include a 256 berth marina, secure parking, restaurant, bars, weigh station, fuel & ice, as well as onsite contractors to handle most requirements.

Our fishing heritage as one of Australia’s largest and most successful clubs at a competition level is well-documented, and our annual BBGFC Invitational Tournament has grown to become one of Australia’s largest, and richest, tournaments regularly attracting over 300 anglers competing for a sought after prize pool. You can find out more about the  club's history here ,  and find more information on our  Invitational Tournament here .

With over 170 members in our club (and climbing), including several well-known professional charter captains & crewmen, our fishing fleet is diverse and extremely experienced. We cater to anglers & vessels of all kinds, with everything from 5m trailerboats to 50-foot+ battlewagons, including some of Australia’s most prestigious charter & private vessels, all proud to call the BBGFC their home club.

Whether you are a seasoned veteran or new to the sport, the BBGFC should be your first port of call when searching for a game fishing club. New members are ALWAYS welcome, and we encourage ALL members to get involved with the club’s extensive calendar of events, including pointscores, tournaments, club meetings and other social events.

Please take the time to browse this site, visit the chat forums and check out our photo & video galleries. To find out more about joining the club, or for any other information please contact a member of the  committee .
