Up to 20: cruiser / Over 20: sports cruiser / Over 30: racer

Sometimes it’s hard to see from the outside what performance you might expect from one sailing boat vs another and so, like in cars, one measure often used is the Power to Weight ratio, in boats this is called the Sail Area to Displacement ratio or SAD. This is a universal measure that allows us to compare widely different models and come to a reasonably accurate view on their likely relative performance under similar sailing conditions.

Multihull World use a variation of the SAD calculations used by the major sail racing organisations and the figures we publish broadly look like this:

• SAD under 15 : Motor sailer
• SAD 15 - 20: cruiser
• SAD 20 - 25: Performance cruiser
• SAD 25 – 30: Cruiser racer
• SAD above 30: race boat

The calculation takes the upwind sail area and divides it by the actual weight of the boat. The calculation is a little more complicated than that but that’s the essence. It takes no account of hull shape, skipper quality or any other differences.

Unfortunately, not every vendor knows the sail area of their sails and not everyone knows the weight of their boat – for this reason we sometimes don’t have the SAD available to publish. Also, some manufacturers publish a weight that is well below the real weight of their boats and in that way appear to have much more performance than they actually do.

However, leaving those anomalies aside, we think this measure is an interesting one for those who are comparing multihulls or are coming to multihulls for the first time.

As a general rule – one generally trades performance for accommodation. If your boat is under 50ft and has walkways either side of beds low in the hull then she isn’t going to sail very well!

What is a Trimaran?

A multihull trimaran is a type of sailing vessel that typically features three hulls in a single boat. The three hulls support the boat's weight, creating a stable sailing platform and giving it better manoeuvrability. Additionally, the two outboard hulls provide greater stability and performance than a single-hull boat, allowing the boat to travel faster and remain upright even in choppy waters. Trimarans are generally more efficient than other types of sailing boat due to their relatively large surface area. With a greater sail area, they are able to generate more power with less effort, offering better fuel economy and overall performance.

ABOUT TRIMARAN BOATS

A trimaran is a type of multihull sailboat with three individual hulls, consisting of the main central hull and the two smaller outrigger hulls.

Modern trimarans look futuristic with their sharp hulls design and racing rigs, but the first trimarans were built by indigenous Polynesians and other Pacific islanders almost 4,000 years ago.

During the 1960's and 1970's trimarans gained in popularity, mainly in the racing boat sector, but now, new manufacturers such as Neel Trimarans have found a clever gap in the market, gaining serious interest from modern sailors offering the performance benefits of a trimaran with the type of accommodation offered in a cruising catamaran .

Why mulithulls.

WHY TRIMARANS?

• Trimarans - are fast yet safe Trimarans are naturally buoyant and if ever capsized, provide a convenient raft for the crew. Whereas monohulls, with all that heavy ballast, have a tendency to sink leaving no trace and often, no crew!
• Stiffness - or the lack of heeling in side winds, gives multihulls acceleration that is the envy of monohull sailors. Monohulls, in contrast heel right over in gusts spilling all the wind and losing the propulsive power that the wind could have provided.
• Taking the ground - safely is something that boats with single keels do not do. People who know they are going to do this sometimes choose monohulls with lifting keels or bilge keelers (with two keels). But they are still blunt monohulls with ballast and consequently cannot compete with multihulls for speed. Bilge keelers rarely get above 5 knots.
• Trailable trimarans can easily be taken to new places so when somebody asks you, "Where is your home port?" or "your usual cruising ground?" you can answer that you have neither one nor the other or that they change each time you go sailing.
