Captain Kangaroo's yacht club goes under

Long island nonprofit runs out of money, closes after 57 years in operation.

BABYLON, N.Y. — The Long Island Yacht Club — once led by Bob Keeshan, a Babylon Village resident who played television’s Captain Kangaroo — has closed.

The 57-year-old nonprofit — which offered swimming, boating and tennis at a Babylon Village estate with a Georgian mansion for a clubhouse — shut its doors Dec. 16 after running out of cash, club officers said.

“For the past two years, we’ve been aggressively pursuing new members, and all our attempts have not been successful,” said Steve Vid, an Amityville businessman who served as the club’s commodore. “We’ve done everything conceivable. The economy is not receptive to people spending this kind of discretionary money right now.”

The club, established on the grounds of a 7-acre Little East Neck Road estate in 1958, boasted tennis courts, restaurant fare, a swimming pool and slips for 74 vessels. Members came from across Long Island and paid about $10,000 a year.

In the 1960s, its 160 full members floated one of Long Island’s largest power boat fleets. But in recent years, fewer than half its slips were occupied, and after a handful of unexpected resignations this fall, only 14 full members remained.

Personal rebuilding expenses after Hurricane Irene and superstorm Sandy led some members to resign, Vid said. Remaining members faced higher costs, and funds declined while operating expenses remained high.

“We ran out of money,” Vid said. “I’m sick about it. It’s out of my control.”

About eight employees are out of work, Vid said. Also lost will be dozens of summer jobs.

With yearly taxes and maintenance fees reaching into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, the club would need at least 40 full members to stay viable, he said.

While some members have discussed reopening the club, Vid said several developers interested in purchasing the property have approached club officers. The club is seeking legal and accounting advice before proceeding, and Vid said he expects answers to basic questions on unwinding club holdings in January.

Village Mayor Ralph Scordino described the club as a valued resource, despite occasional complaints from neighbors about noise and other quality-of-life issues over the years.

His administration supports continued operation at that location as a yacht club, Scordino said. He said prospective developers are likely “frothing at the mouth … (but) I would not be in favor of putting condominiums there.”

Lee Labiento, the club’s membership development chair and a professor of global health issues at Hofstra University, held out hope of a reorganization last week, even as she mourned the loss of a gathering place for area seniors and for her own family.

“It was another way we had summer life with our grandchildren,” she said, recalling summer swim teams and children’s enrichment classes she had taught since joining 12 years ago.

Bartender Gail Whittemore, 71, an employee since the late 1990s, said she had learned the club was closing only a few days before the doors shut. She cut in half the money she planned to spend on Christmas presents for her grandchildren and anticipated it would be hard or impossible to find another bartending job until after the holiday season.

“We had the fireplace going, and it was all decorated for Christmas,” she said. “I guess they didn’t have enough members to hold down the fort.”

Crews work to transform Harriet Island for Minnesota Yacht Club Festival

By Ubah Ali

July 17, 2024 / 10:53 PM CDT / CBS Minnesota

ST. PAUL, Minn. — From major floods to a major festival — work is underway to transform St. Paul's Harriet Island into an oasis for festivalgoers.

Around Harriet Island, you may hear heavy machinery now, but on Friday it'll be artists like Gwen Stefani, Alanis Morissette and Red Hot Chili Peppers rocking the stage .

"It's surreal, I sent a pic to the mayor (Melvin Carter) and I can't believe that (stage) is in our park right now," said St. Paul Parks and Recreation Director Andy Rodriguez.

Rodriguez's shock is justified given Harriet Island was flooded after weeks of torrential rain.

The Mississippi River spilled onto the island, swallowing the playground and forcing 11 events to be canceled.

Rodriguez said there was concern for a moment and city leaders and festival organizers did meet to explore other options.

But a stretch of warm days and clear skies arrived just in time.

"We are in really good shape heading into the weekend," he smiled.

Despite water receding, it took a lot to get the island ready for 60,000 people.

"We've probably had 30 plus people down here every day consecutively for about a week and a half, two weeks, getting site prepared," said Rodriguez.

Rodriguez says crews put in countless hours removing silt, checking electrical wiring and making sure park structures were still in good shape.

"We've done everything we need to do in terms of testing, compliance, and inspection and we are ready to go," he said.

Wednesday evening C3 music festival crews were hard at work before Friday's opening act.

Rodriguez says he's excited for one of the biggest festivals to take place.

"Not only great for this park but downtown St. Paul, city as a whole, businesses, hotels it's bring back activation down to the space," he said.

Now You Know: Yacht Club announces renovation progress; Spammy Jammy this weekend

The project includes new build above the port cochere and a “total gut rehab” of the interior to provide upgraded social and dining spaces.

A new addition over the port cochere will be used for office space, freeing up key areas in the existing building for a new member’s lounge and increased dining space.

Construction at the Marco Island Yacht Club is moving forward on schedule aiming to complete this major renovation in time for the holiday season.

“We are really pleased with the progress as well as the working relationship with our partners, MKH Architecture and D Garret Construction,” said Dave Everitt, MIYC chairman of the board. “We’ve managed to overcome obstacles and surprises, holding to the schedule so members can enjoy a beautifully transformed clubhouse before the end of the year.”

Highlights of the project include the clubhouse, which will feature a fresh, modern décor; state-of-the-art kitchens and an additional bar upstairs bar.

Also, a brand-new members lounge will be established, offering a comfortable and inviting space for socializing and relaxation.

General Manager Missy Duffy emphasized that the club remains active even without its clubhouse.

“We continue to hold activities at outside locations, and of course we have a variety of boating events on the water and socializing on the docks, ensuring that the club's vibrant community remains active and engaged,” she said. “We are also busy planning and preparing for a spectacular grand opening of the new clubhouse toward the end of the year."

Kittery Point Yacht Club dock plan paused in New Castle: Here's why

Portrait of Ian Lenahan

NEW CASTLE — The Kittery Point Yacht Club's bid to gain town approval for a new dock on the Piscataqua River’s back channel has been paused by a New Castle board at the club's request.

Club leaders are planning to work with project opponents and residents on addressing safety around the property along the Route 1B causeway, addressing criticism made against the proposal since the winter. The proposal is presently tied up in the New Castle Zoning Board of Adjustment review and public hearing process.

The Zoning Board of Adjustment voted Wednesday night to continue the proposal to its Sept. 17 meeting in order to collaborate with the 68-year-old club on safety solutions.

The club released a statement Thursday regarding the proposal's continuance through Dave Severance, treasurer for the club and a board of directors member.

“We believe that there may be opportunities for the club to work together with the community in an effort to improve safety along the Route 1B causeway,” the club stated. “We felt that it would be better for all involved to take additional time to explore these opportunities and provide a clear perspective to all who may not have a clear factual understanding of the scope of our proposed project.”

The Kittery Point Yacht Club first proposed a 150-foot-long dock in the river’s back channel off Goat Island, a plan that has since been scaled back. The dock would be built off land purchased by the club from an abutter in 2022, jutting out in the waterway for use by the club’s student sailors and staff to avoid the potentially dangerous sailing conditions off the club’s current dock on the river.

Club members and proposal proponents have stated in hearings the new dock doesn’t mean the club is expanding. Rather, the new dock would evenly distribute students and staff and offer a safer voyage along the back channel and help further students’ knowledge of sailing.

The club's intention is to offer a second, safer access point to the water, according to Severance and Doug Pinciaro, the club dockmaster and a board of directors member.

Critics of the plan feel the dock would obstruct their views of the back channel and compromise safety along the causeway, arguing foot and vehicular traffic would increase, thereby increasing the risk of a vehicular accident involving pedestrians. Some have claimed a dock off Goat Island would harm navigation in the back channel.

In January, the Zoning Board of Adjustment approved a motion to grant the club the necessary variances for the proposed dock. However in February, the town Select Board stepped in and asked for a hearing to appeal the matter, alleging the Zoning Board of Adjustment erred in granting the variances.

The Zoning Board of Adjustment agreed to the Select Board’s appeal, setting off the rehearing process that has now spanned several months.

“We look forward to working with the community to find an amicable solution,” the Kittery Point Yacht Club’s Thursday statement added.

The dock would be installed between November 15 and March 15, 2025 to avoid disruption to the sturgeon population in the back channel, according to May 21 minutes of a Zoning Board of Adjustment hearing on the matter.

Aside from the Zoning Board of Adjustment’s stamp of approval, the proposal would need to be signed off on by New Castle’s Planning Board, in addition to the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services.
