Foils The rudders and daggerboard foils used on the F1x A-class foiling catamarans are produced with the highest quality carbon pre-preg fibers. The foils are cured in our own Autoclave . Construction The F1x A-cat is manufactured entirely according to the carbon pre-preg/ Nomex production method, and cured in our Autoclave. This technology is the same as used in the aerospace industry and within other foiling boats like for example, the America’s Cup.

Design The design of the F1x foiling A-class catamaran was completely conceived by the DNA design team and made at DNA’s own yard. Tarpon River Boatworks was forged from 25+ years of experience in the marine industry. Our founder and CEO, Todd Meyer, started his path to becoming a seasoned waterman as a child who spent extensive time on the water with his father. Todd’s mission was now clear, develop and launch an unrivaled hydrofoil-assisted, power catamaran. Utilizing his tier-one experience and extensive network with the top naval architects and designers around the globe, he decided the right team for the project was Morrelli & Melvin Design and Engineering.

Starting with a 24 foot prototype, they honed the platform and are now setting the new standard in power catamarans starting with fully customizable 25’ and 33.5′ platforms.  Todd and his team are excited to bring this unique boating experience to the water. The $1million match race: Ellison and Coutts unveil SailGP circuit for 50ft foiling catamarans

The new SailGP circuit will see six teams compete at five events around the world in one-design 50ft catamarans for a $1million prize purse

There had been many rumours and speculative stories, but last night at a glitzy ceremony in London the highly anticipated SailGP circuit was confirmed.

Funded by Larry Ellison, founder of Oracle and former America’s Cup holder, and run by Russell Coutts, the new SailGP circuit will see last year’s America’s Cup catamarans, the AC50s, re-engineered and reworked to create a one-design class.

They will be raced by six teams, sailing under national flags – Britain, France, Australia, the United States, China and Japan – on a global circuit. The 2019 circuit will begin in Sydney in February 2019 before moving on to San Francisco in May, New York in June, Cowes, UK, for the first weekend of Lendy Cowes Week, and then onto Marseille, France in September.

Racing will be over two days, with evening races planned for some city venues, such as New York. Each grand prix will begin with five fleet races, before culminating in a final match race between the two leaders. The exception will be the season finale in Marseille, which will have three days of racing culminating in one, 20-minute match race for the two overall season leaders, racing for a prize of €1million.

The wing-sailed Foiling 50s are developed at Core Composites in New Zealand, which is owned by Ellison. Coutts said a staff of 110 has been working for a year on the catamarans, which are being stripped of their America’s Cup team development components and converted into a one-design. 

According to Coutts, rather than having grinders (or cyclors) working constantly to provide hydraulic power, the F50s will instead have battery powered foil and rudder controls. Each cat will be sailed by a crew of five (one fewer than on the AC50s), with one dedicated to ‘joystick’ control of the foils, a helmsman and wing trimmer, and two grinders.

At last night’s opening presentation, Coutts said that whilst the boats will be one-design the aim is to allow them to evolve and adopt latest technology, with the Core engineers tasked with continually developing the catamarans. There was much talk at the launch night about how they will be regularly sailing at 50 knots or upwards.

“SailGP is the evolution of sailing,” said Ellison, SailGP founder, in a pre-recorded video message. “With equally incredible technology across our one-design fleet, we expect to see thrillingly close and competitive racing amongst national teams. And, with a modern, consistent format, SailGP will provide a new opportunity for talented sailors who want to race for their countries.”

“SailGP distills all of the most successful, exciting and relevant elements of high-performance, professional racing, while adding the extra edge that comes with nation-versus-nation competition,” commented Coutts, SailGP CEO, in the official press release. “We are aiming to be pioneers of new technologies, boat design, commercial partnerships and global audience engagement. But with every crew on the same groundbreaking F50 catamaran, this isn’t a tech arms race, rather the ultimate test to establish the best sailing team in advanced foiling catamarans.”

The opening show, for which an open air amphitheatre was built on London’s South Bank, was big on razzmatazz (smoke machines! fire! laser beams!). Whilst some details were forthcoming – for example how the nationality rule will be applied – others have yet to be unveiled, such as how the boats and circuit will tour the globe.

A 100 percent nationality rule will be applied to Britain, France, Australia and the US teams, while China and Japan will be required to have 40 percent of the crew from their home nation, increasing by a further 20 percent each year. World Sailing will sanction which sailors do, and which do not, qualify as which nationality. Effectively the rule forces countries like China and Japan to develop an elite foiling training programme.

The circuit is backed heavily by Oracle, Ellison’s cloud computing firm, with luxury goods house Louis Vuitton and Land Rover cars joining as founding partners. The plan is for the circuit to become commercially viable, and to increase to ten teams, racing at ten events.

The Great Britain SailGP Team was also introduced to home fans during the London launch. It will be skippered by Rio 2016 Olympian and 49er world champion Dylan Fletcher, with Olympic bronze medalist and highly experienced foiling cat sailor Chris Draper as team CEO and wing trimmer. Olympic silver medalist Stuart Bithell is flight controller, while Olympic rower Matt Gotrel joins Extreme Sailing Series winner Richard Mason, as the two grinders.

En croissance de 25% en 2023, après un triplement de son volume d'affaires entre 2020 et 2021, l'entreprise a terminé l'an passé à 4,2 millions d'euros de chiffre d'affaires et vise les 5 millions d'euros en 2024. Pour répondre à la demande et mettre des produits sur le marché en amont des tendances, Foil and Co a mis en place un modèle industriel fondé sur un processus globalisé de production de pièces en carbone.

«  Dans notre usine 4.0 de Pencran, les phases de R&D sont accélérées grâce à un bureau d'études intégré, à des process innovants et à l'utilisation de machines à commande. Du design à la production, l'optimisation par l'IA des tâches à faible valeur ajoutée et la diminution de l'impact de la main d'œuvre nous permettent de rester concurrentiels face aux offres étrangères. Tout en développant des produits performants et situés dans le haut de gamme accessible, nous pouvons sortir un nouveau produit en trois mois contre douze pour nos concurrents. Toutes ces tâches s'effectuent dans une démarche de développement durable » ajoute le dirigeant, architecte naval de profession et ancien collaborateur de Beneteau.

Pour fabriquer ses pièces en composites, l'entreprise, qui s'intéresse en parallèle aux matériaux bio-sourcés et réellement recyclables (lin, chanvre, résine bio-sourcées), s'approvisionne en Europe (France, Suisse, Autriche), optimise ses consommations d'eau et d'énergie et tend vers une production zéro déchet.

Offensive internationale et levée de fonds

Chaque année, Foil and Co fabrique 3.000 foils et sort plusieurs produits phares. La vente des articles dédiés à la glisse sous la marque AFS représente les deux tiers de son chiffre d'affaires auquel s'ajoute une petite activité de diversification et de sous-traitance de pièces en composites pour des marchés annexes du nautisme (appendices de bateaux, accastillage). «  Le marché du bateau à foil devrait atteindre 30 milliards d'euros en 2030. Demain, Foil and Co doit pouvoir élargir son savoir-faire sur les foils au-delà de la petite glisse et vers des bateaux plus importants  » ambitionne Tanguy Le Bihan.

Dans cette optique, l'entreprise de 42 personnes mène l'offensive à l'international depuis un an et demi, en Europe mais également aux États-Unis et au Royaume-Uni.

«  La France est notre plus gros marché, car le nautisme y est un marché de pointe. Mais nous sommes passés de 12% à 30% de chiffre d'affaires à l'export, et allons continuer à augmenter nos parts de marché pour atteindre 70-75%. Chaque année, nous ciblons un pays, en 2024 l'accent est mis sur l'Allemagne, plus gros importateur de produits norvégiens. »

Afin de financer ses futurs développements, Foil and Co a lancé en début d'année une levée de fonds visant à réunir 2,5 millions d'euros. À l'horizon 2026, la PME table sur un chiffre d'affaires de 15 millions d'euros pour 88 collaborateurs. À la pointe bretonne, les recrutements de techniciens composite s'avèrent cependant complexes : les talents repérés filent souvent chez Airbus.

« Tech for Future » est le plus grand concours de startups de France. Organisé par les rédactions de La Tribune, il est soutenu par des partenaires officiels tels que la Mission French Tech, Bpifrance, Business France, BNP Paribas, Dalkia, Deloitte, BeTomorrow, l'INPI, le ministère des Outre-Mer, Orange, The Box et BFM Business.
