Nothing says “I’m on vacation” quite like a beach bar. And often D.C. residents don’t have the time or resources to head all the way to Turks and Caicos (or even the Outer Banks) to get their fix.

A few bars fall into this category inside the Beltway (think everyone-is-welcome Arlington gay bar Freddie’s Beach Bar , boater’s paradise Island Time Bar & Grill at Columbia Island Marina, or Falls Church surf-y stalwart Clare & Don’s ), and some arguably in the metro area, like MacDowell’s Beach in Leesburg. But realistically, you’re going to have to drive at least a little in order to reach sand, frozen drinks, and even a wave or two.

Here are a handful of destinations that aren’t too far of a trek (note that while many self-identify as tiki bars, a genre with a complicated history, this is more in the straw-hut-on-the-beach sense, versus elaborate Polynesian decor or historically-influenced rum drinks).

1. Dockside Restaurant and Tiki Bar (distance from D.C.: 67 miles)

This beachfront Colonial Beach, Va. haunt has plenty of sand, some outdoor games, and a menu of steamed shrimp, fish sandwiches, and tuna tacos. To drink, expect beers, orange crushes, and laid-back punches.

2. High Tides/Black Pearl Tiki Hut (distance from D.C.: 65 miles)

Another option in Colonial Beach, this bar frequently attracts live music (the “tiki bar” component is right on the sand) and serves a decent pina colada. Find a more extensive food menu at High Tides next door.

3. Tiki Bar Solomons Island (distance from D.C.: 63 miles)

hard yacht cafe owner

This Maryland destination offers crab egg rolls, bacon-wrapped shrimp, and bourbon sea scallops, along with just about any flavor crush, from sour berry to creamsicle. You’ll find a few tiki-leaning beverage offerings here like mai tais and the coconut rum-based Kokomo.

4. Sunset Cove Middle River (distance from D.C.: 55 miles)

Sunset Cove has the feel of a bayside bar without the drive across the Bay Bridge. Try Maryland’s beloved rockfish in all forms (tenders, tacos, wrap), plus the spicy-sweet Sunset Shrimp appetizer with Thai chili aioli. Wash it all down with a variety of crushes, mojitos, or an ice cold can of Natty Boh.

5. Hard Yacht Cafe (distance from D.C.: 46 miles)

There are a ton of great dock bar options in Dundalk (a bayside bar crawl is a summer Saturday well spent), but the consistent classic is Hard Yacht Cafe. This waterfront spot has a Key West sensibility and vibrant Adirondack chairs aplenty, an everyday brunch menu of omelets, bowls, and bloody marys, plus BYO burgers and nachos. Top that with nightly live music and colorful crush cocktails and your troubles are over, dude.

6. The Kentmorr Beach Bar and Grill (distance from D.C.: 48 miles)

Kent Island, Maryland’s bayside crab house reopened this summer with a new owner: D.C.’s Atlas Brew Works. A tropical-themed beach lined with hammock swings serves freshly squeezed crushes, pineapple painkillers, and brick-oven pies.

What's Up, Dock?

Exploring the waterfront, boat-friendly bars of baltimore county..

By Jess Mayhugh | August 2017

On our jaunt, we headed first to Row Boat Willie’s (9033 Cuckold Point Road, Sparrows Point, 410-477-5137) , a dock bar adjacent to the family boat-rental marina on Millers Island. After Hurricane Isabel got the best of the bar in 2003, its owners rebuilt stronger than ever with an outdoor area that features live music on the weekends. The focus here is on the simpler pleasures of life, so a can of Natty Boh and nachos did us just fine. (Word to the wise: Willie’s is only open Thursday-Sunday.)

Next up was the tried-and-true favorite Hard Yacht Cafe ( 8500 Cove Road, Dundalk, 443-407-0038 ), located on Anchor Bay East Marina overlooking Bear Creek. Prime seats are on the outdoor deck where reggae music plays and happy hour starts at 2 p.m., which leaves plenty of time to get a head start on those $6 crushes, $5 appetizers, $4 rail drinks, and $3 domestic beers.

HARDYACHTCAFE_012.jpg#asset:47059

The Seahorse Inn (710 Wise Ave., Dundalk, 410-388-1150) , a dive on Oakleigh Cove where frequent kayakers, boaters, and Jet Skiers whizz by. There’s a colorful deck to take in the view or a beach to play horseshoes below, where we enjoyed an amusingly named Creek Wooder (pronounced in your best Bawlmerese)—the Dundalk version of a John Daly.

We also appreciated the local selection of beer—a dock-bar rarity—and the Baltimore Storm, a mix of Old Line Spirits rum and ginger beer. It was a perfect sipper for watching the sunset.

Customer ratings and reviews.

Great place with a lot of personality. Had Uncle Bobby's Crabby Tots which were great. Tots were fried crispy with a very generous portion. Friendly attentive service.

Place was a little difficult to find at night since it's off the beaten path and on the waterfront. Server immediately seated us and was attentive to our drink needs. It was a Saturday night so there was a two man band that played a variety of hit songs. Beer list was limited but they did offer a variety of crushes and specialty drinks. Food was limited to sandwiches, some seafood, and other lite fare. They did offer some specials. Once food was served the waitress became overwhelmed with other tables to wait on. Food was average to above average depending on what was ordered. Took a while to track down waitress to get more drinks and the check. Wouldn't let the service stop me from going back but i wouldn't go out of my way to get there either. Probably more enjoyable expwrince in the warmer months where outside dining ia available.

Fun super friendly great music and always awesome food. The staff and the owners are always happy to see you. Like your a family member. They open at 7am for breakfast I love the French Toast for lunch I recommend the Tots dinner well to be honest everything one the menu is awesome!!!! Thanks Dee Bognar

Hard Yacht is an awesome indoor/outdoor bar and grille. Nice happy hour specials and fair priced meals. They can get busy but you can call ahead for a table! Try the fried pickles! I would go back again.

Stick to bar food and drinks. Plenty of room in summer and spring time two large decks , out door areas etc. Food is good but the Menu gets very much too expensive for the quality of food presented. also have prices jacked up to keep younger crowd out. Wish to see more happy hour type deals...

“We Will Be Back” Review of Hard Yacht Cafe

Crab cake omelet

We just discovered Hard Yacht and we liked just about everything, including the laid back atmosphere on the water. We came on a Wednesday for happy hour with the $2.50 National Bohemians and Bud Lights as well as some outstanding Old Bay wings at 6 for $6.95. They were cooked and seasoned perfectly. I got a very full shrimp salad sandwich that was only lacking some Old Bay, which can be fixed on a next visit. My wife liked the half and half soup and her 1/2 lb. of steamed shrimp. We liked all the outdoor seating options right on and over the water as well as the extended bar up a little walkway around the corner of the dining room. The rest of the party was pleased and it's always nice stumbling onto a new place like this. The only real negative was the bathroom that is the size of a closet, especially with a nice size crowd.

Went to this location with my girlfriend yesterday. The atmosphere was nice, and we ordered, but with a diet coke and an ice tea - no alcoholic beverages. Anyway the waitress brought my girlfriend a nice plate of food, but my chicken sandwich meal was disgusting. No kidding, I got a bag of chips on the plate, (1) super small pickle, and a sandwich I would be hesitant to feed to a dog. The chicken was tough as belt leather and it was topped w a table spoon of crab dip and a slice of slightly melted cheddar, what they call the Chicken Chesapeake - - - - I would have been much more satisfied with McDonald's to be honest - the price was $15.99. I'm really sorry that I didn't take a picture, sickening and unreal. I've gone there many times before, but def not going back. The waitress could have cared less BTW.

We didn't actually dine here - we were meeting a broker to look at a boat. The bartender was friendly and welcoming, and took time to tell us about the history of the bar and area. We felt like we missed out not eating here.

Nice spot on the water. We attended a birthday party in a semi private party room. Always there for our drink orders. .Buffet for party was a nice combination of house specialty

hard yacht cafe owner

Arrived early so could walk around and enjoy the view of boats at the pier, the colorful gift shop and look in at the tiki bar elevated over the water. The eclectic nautical decor was fun to examine I Settled in with the great house Bloody Mary while waiting for the rest of my party. We shared two good appetizers. The conch fritters were tasty and spicy as was the dipping sauce. The crab Pretzel was full of crab meat and flavorful cheese. The generously stuffed shrimp tacos were double wrapped, a very good idea as soft tortillas can tear. Everyone was impressed with the chunky beef stew in a delicious bread bowl. Mahi cutlets were flaky and well seasoned with nice red potatoes on the side. The pot roast with mushrooms was served on a bed of mashed potatoes making a perfect meal. The brownie chocolate sundae and Key (Bridge) Lime Pie came with clouds of light whipped cream. Service was prompt, attentive and friendly. Looking forward to warmer weather to sit out on the large deck.

Sights of Elektrostal, Moscow region

2024 Author : Harold Hamphrey | [email protected] . Last modified: 2023-12-17 10:06

In the Moscow region there is a small cozy town Elektrostal. Its sights for the most part have no historical value due to the fact that the city has a relatively small history. But for a visiting tourist or city dweller, they will be of interest. There is something to see, where to go to have an exciting leisure time.

Today the population of the city is 158 thousand people. Until the beginning of the 20th century there were several small workers' settlements here. After the opening of the electrometallurgical and equipment factories, the place began to be called the natural boundary of Calm. The construction of the railway made this settlement accessible, and workers and families flocked here to earn money. In 1925, the station was named Elektrostal, and the rapid increase in population allowed the village to receive the status of a city.

attractions elektrostal photo

The founder of the city is a prominent Russian industrialist Nikolai Vtorov. It was he who opened the plant here, creating, in fact, a city-forming enterprise that is still operating. In Soviet times, it was a closed facility, and it was not easy to get to work here.

Today Elektrostal is a promising industrial city with a great future and a heroic past. It bears the proud name "City of Military and Labor Glory".

You can learn about the sights of Elektrostal with descriptions and photos here. There are places for walking, outdoor activities and cultural development.

sights of the electric steel of the Moscow region

Those who come to the city by train are met by a monument to the metallurgist. It was installed in November 2017 for the 100th anniversary of the Elektrostal plant. The attraction is made in the style of constructivism. The monument quickly won the love of the townspeople, because this city is supported by ordinary workers.

Elektrostal attractions photo with description

Elektrost altsy and the founding father of the plant, Nikolai Vtorov, are honored. In 2002, a monument was opened in honor of him, which became a landmark of the city of Elektrostal. The bronze sculpture is installed on the site where once stood a monument to the leader of the world proletariat, V. I. Lenin. Times change, characters change. Today, the plant, founded a century ago, is the largest in Russia. Vtorov himself, whose fortune was estimated at 60 million rubles in gold, according to Forbes magazine, was the owner of the largest capital at the beginning of the century. He was a banker, an industrialist, an entrepreneur, a man of action.

The monument was erected byinitiative of the townspeople who wished to perpetuate the monument to the great man.

One of the popular places for spending weekends and evenings among citizens and guests of the city is the Park of Culture and Leisure. Here you can ride attractions for children and adults, play slot machines, rollerblade or bike. The park is divided into two zones. Fans of unhurried walks in the fresh air make a promenade on the Quiet Alley, and those who prefer outdoor activities flock to the Entertainment Alley. The park has a summer stage, where concerts and cafes are regularly held.

Elektrostal attractions

Until 1999, there was no central museum among the attractions of Elektrostal in the Moscow Region. The expositions were exhibited in schools, the house of culture, in factory museums. The city was closed, so there was no large influx of tourists and visitors. The appearance of the historical and art museum made it possible for residents and guests of the city to learn a lot of useful information about their native land, the formation of the production process, and the difficult years of the war. The exposition consists of paintings by local artists, historical artifacts, household items, documents, books and much more. The collection is updated regularly. It also hosts outdoor exhibitions, which are always popular with the townspeople.

One of the main attractions of Elektrostal, the photo of which is available to almost every resident or visitor, is the Main Alley. On herpassers-by like to stroll along shady paths, townspeople rest by the fountain after a hard shift at the plant. Flower beds are the decoration of the alley. In 2006, a flower festival was held here for the first time, which has become traditional. Each enterprise of the city and private individuals give residents a real composition of fresh flowers, which pleases with bright colors all summer long. A riot of colors, aromas and a flight of fantasy reigns here. Walking through the park, you can see Snow White with a basket, a bright well, a multi-tiered cake made from fresh flowers, hearts of lovers or a fabulous house. It is almost impossible not to take a photo against the background of these compositions.

There is a cultural center in the city. It hosts performances by local creative teams and visiting stars, performances and circus performances.

In 1971, the ice palace "Crystal" was opened in the city. Almost immediately, a children's and youth hockey team was organized, which gained sports fame. This is the home sports arena for the Elektrostal hockey team. Matches of different levels are held on the ice.

There are sections for children who go in for hockey or figure skating. Citizens come here with their families to cheer for their favorite team or go ice skating.

Elektrostal is a city with a heroic past. During the war years, more than 12 thousand citizens came to the recruiting station and went to the front to defend their homeland. Almost 4 thousand of them did not return from the battle. To these heroesdedicated to the memorial complex with the inextinguishable Eternal Flame, opened in 1968

But the electricians took part in the war in Afghanistan and Chechnya. By decision of the city authorities, their memory is also immortalized in the memorial complex.

It has become a good tradition for newlyweds to lay flowers at this monument.

attractions of the city of Elektrostal

In 1999, a museum and exhibition complex was opened in the city, where, in addition to the exhibition hall, there are numerous circles for children, classes for young people, and a creative workshop. Various festivals, exhibitions, city holidays and other events are held within the walls and on the territory of the complex, which attract many spectators.

Elektrostal attractions

Listing the sights of Elektrostal, it is impossible not to mention the temples. There are several of them in the city: the church of St. John of Kronstadt, St. Andrew's Church, the hospital church of St. Panteleimon. Another new church is being built. In appearance, the temples look ancient, monumental, in the Novgorod style. But they were all built at the end of the 20th century.

Let there be no ancient artifacts among the sights of Elektrostal. But on the other hand, all of them are connected with the history of the city, with everyday work and military exploits of ordinary residents.
