Creating a custom-built yacht is a journey unlike any other. Conceiving your yacht alongside Burger’s engineers and design team is a remarkable experience: developing the specifics, reviewing the plans and making decisions as you watch your dreams materialize before your eyes. The first step in delivering the yacht of your dreams is to share your vision with the Burger design team and engineering staff. Our in-depth design brief helps define your priorities for a yacht. We recommend touring the Burger shipyard where you can meet our exceptional team, learn how your yacht will be constructed and to witness the true value of Burger’s experience and craftsmanship.

After defining your vision, your dreams will begin to take shape in dramatic conceptual designs, renderings and cost estimates, presented for your direction and approval before moving forward.

Conceptual designs and renderings include:

• Hull designs
• Exterior styling and interior floor plans
• Interior elevation renderings
• Engines, propulsion and electric generation equipment selection
• Special requirements, including recreational and/or shore tenders and storage options
• Navigation electronics and entertainment system descriptions

Once you’ve approved the design, Burger will prepare a detailed design and specification breakdown with descriptions of every step in your yacht’s construction; from its development milestones to key points of approval. With a finalized and signed contract, your yacht is on the way to fruition. Each step of the build is documented before work begins, with a detailed timeline that describes each step of the process, so that you remain involved and aware of our progress, every step of the way.

Months of careful planning and construction culminate when it’s time to launch your new Burger yacht. Along with the Burger team, you and/or your captain take your new Burger yacht through various sea trials, including at-sea observations and detailed walk-through inspections. At this stage, final modifications and refinements are made.

Custom Yachts

You may have never thought about it, but the boat is like a suit that the owner must be able to wear perfectly. To fulfill your wishes, as well as understand the customer's needs, Custom Yacht proposes itself as a real naval tailor able to design, engineer and produce boats from scratch, based exclusively on the owner's preferences. Yachts and superyachts, in steel-aluminum or just in aluminum, forged down to the smallest detail exactly like tailor-made suits, therefore 100% custom.

Building customizable boats from bow and stern means understanding and grasping the owner's lifestyle through an exquisitely tailored approach and highly artisanal sensitivity. Only in this way is it possible to create the yacht that suits the customer and how the customer wants it.

The owner has the opportunity to choose between four great internationally renowned designers - Sergio Cutolo (Hydro Tec), Marco Casali, Giovanni Ceccarelli and Michele Dragoni - to whom he can entrust the creation of his favorite outfit. The owner chooses the "stylist" who is closest to his tastes and from that moment the gestation of a yacht that will become unique and unrepeatable begins.

Yacht for sale

Custom Yacht is like a factory of desires: every need expressed by the owner is fully satisfied not only in the production of new boats, but also in the sale of used boats.

Through our vast network of knowledge and customers, at the request of the owner, we can take care of the sale of his yacht in exchange.

But Custom Yacht's services don't end there: a small number of boats are carefully examined and selected by our technical staff, who then place them on the second-hand market.

Mauro Corvisieri

Mauro Corvisieri understood this from an early age, when his father, a port builder, accompanied him on tugs, and in his youth, when he embarked for a month on board a charter, where he immediately realized the strategic importance of volumes. and livable spaces inside a boat.

Design Your Own Yacht

When designing your own yacht, you have a few options, from commissioning a custom new build yacht construction project through to refitting an existing yacht. When deciding which route to take, it’s helpful to know some of the pros and cons of each approach.

Option 1: The deluxe, no-holds-barred, fully custom yacht.

Experienced yacht owners and charterers often dream of one thing: the day they design their own yacht from scratch. A fully custom new build project is the pinnacle of the yacht ownership experience, as it allows you control over every aspect of your yacht’s design, from technical details like hull form and noise-dulling technology, right through to you designing that split-level master stateroom with private terrace or beach club with spa. Designing a fully custom yacht ensures that your yacht is the realization of every yachting dream, tailored perfectly to how you use your yacht. However when designing your own yacht, this luxurious bespoke option comes at a price, and the build time tends to be longer than with semi-custom models.

Option 2: The freedom and efficiency of a semi-custom yacht.

If you want to design your own yacht, and want to give your input in the design, but want to take advantage of efficiencies in build time and budget, you can opt for a semi-custom design, whereby the yacht’s hull form and design is part of an existing series of yachts. Building on a proven platform, the yacht owner gets to design the yacht’s décor, and depending on the builder, amend parts of the interior layout. The degree of freedom to change elements of the yacht will vary depending on which yacht builder you go with. A semi-custom yacht can have very different décor than other yachts in the same series, but the exterior design (and sometimes interior layout) is clearly part of a series, which will not appeal so much to yacht owners who crave a unique look to their yacht design.

Option 3: Buying ‘off the plan’ with a production yacht

This is the quickest and most cost effective way to buy a new yacht, as production yacht builders buy materials in bulk and put their yachts together quickly due to repetition of process. You can often purchase a yacht that is already under construction, meaning that time to delivery is slashed and you can take possession of your yacht much sooner than if you buy a custom yacht. This option has a lot less room for owner input on design, although some décor choices are normally left open.

Option 4: Refit an existing yacht

If you’re not in the mood to wait for several years for a brand new yacht to be delivered, refitting an existing yacht is an excellent option that can dramatically change the look of your yacht, while also providing the opportunity to update the engineering and onboard systems. A quality refit with a great design can deliver a ‘like-new’ yacht, and will normally significantly add to the resale value and charter potential of your yacht. However, major yard periods run the risk of going over time and over budget, so planning your yard period well is imperative.

Espen Oeino

Under the leadership of the eponymous Norwegian naval architect, Espen Oeino International has been designing iconic superyacht interiors and exteriors since the 1990s. Based in Monaco the studio has worked with Burgess on several projects, most notably the 72m Trinity Yachts-built ALBATROSS and the 156m Lurssen DILBAR, the largest yacht afloat by volume.

H2 Yacht Design

Jonny Horsfield established H2 Yacht design in London in 1994. Today it is a multi-disciplined exterior and interior styling team that has earned a reputation for challenging conventions in yacht design. The studio has so far collaborated on five projects with Burgess, most recently with Heesen.

Harrison Eidsgaard

International yacht designers and architects, Harrison Eidsgaard Design is headed up by its three partners, Peder and Ewa Eidsgaard and Ben Harrison. Undertaking both exterior and interior styling, the studio’s most notable yachts to date include the award-winning TANGO and ELANDESS, the latter being the studio’s first project with Burgess.

Jonathan Quinn Barnett leads a talented team of award-winning yacht designers. Established in 1995, the studio has created original exterior yacht designs and interior architecture for discerning clients in the luxury marketplace. With a critical eye on proportion and detail, designs of distinction associated with Burgess include the interior of OCTOPUS and popular charter yacht MUCHOS MAS.

Michael Leach Design

Established in 1997 by Mick Leach with Mark Smith joining in 1999, MLD is an multi award-winning design practice specialising in marine, aviation and residential projects. With over 60 years’ industry experience collectively, having worked in various top design offices, MLD is now established as one of the industry’s leading and most successful design offices.

Reymond Langton Design

Headed up by design duo Pascale Reymond and Andrew Langton, the London-based studio was founded in 2001. The studio has since delivered 28 motor and sailing yachts, including the 134m SERENE, the largest yacht built in Italy at that time. Originally based in London, the studio’s HQ has since moved to the historic city of Bath.

Situated in the stunning surrounds of Beaulieu in the New Forest, RWD is best known for the design of superyachts such as motor yacht HASNA and sailing yacht TWIZZLE. Founded in 1993, RWD has to date completed six collaborative projects with Burgess.

Sorgiovanni Designs

Established by yacht designer Sam Sorgiovanni in 1997, the eponymous design studio is based in Perth, Australia, and undertakes both exterior and interior designs. The studio’s unique location lends a point of difference to its body of work and it has become well-known for designing superyachts with an exotic feel, as well as great attention to detail.

Terence Disdale Design

Terence Disdale Design is an award-winning design studio located in London, and responsible for the interior and exterior design of the some of the world's most significant yachts. Renowned for a ‘beach house’ style, the studio’s most notable yachts include ECLIPSE and PELORUS, and it has no fewer than 10 collaborative projects with Burgess to date.

Tim Heywood Design

A multi-award-winning exterior yacht designer, Tim Heywood Design has produced some of the largest yachts on water, including the 133m AL MIRQAB. Located in Hampshire, the eponymous yacht designer cut his teeth under the guidance of Jon Bannenberg and in the 40 years since has completed six collaborative projects with Burgess.

Winch Design

A full-service award-winning British design and architecture studio specialising in the exterior and interior styling of motor and sailing yachts, aircraft, residential and commercial properties, Winch Design was established in 1986 and has to date completed seven collaborative projects with Burgess.

5 Steps to Building a Custom Yacht 

Building your own custom yacht should be the realization of a dream. You want every detail to be exactly as you imagined it. Before you jump into the custom yacht design and building processes, get a better idea for the important steps and factors to consider. 

1.Understanding Your Preferences

First, take the time to understand what you like and want in a boat. Think specifically about how you plan on using the yacht. The Process

The beginning, construction, performance.

We all have something within us that recognizes a beautiful boat. Walking the docks and admiring the lineup, there are only a few that stand out as truly special, memorable boats. They aren’t just pretty—they are vessels for which no detail is overlooked. Down to the perfectly timed screw head and beautiful, fare lines, nothing goes without attention. These are the boats we take pride in. We believe that in boatbuilding, perfection is something to never stop striving for. Winter yachts are superior because we are never satisfied with what has worked well in the past, we are always working for more.

Everything remarkable begins with a dream. Magnificence is not easily obtained, nor does it come from mediocrity; this is where your dream of a custom boat begins. For you, the dream may have come naturally after countless hours on the water, or like the rest of our clients, you simply appreciate quality, custom-built boats and desire one for yourself. The dream unfolds through creative stages, which elevate the process above pre-fabricated manufacturing. Our desire is to fulfill your dream by taking your ideas, thoughts, and visions and make your dream custom-built boat a reality. No one else’s boat, but yours.

The journey begins with us gathering crucial information from you so we can better understand the applications for which your boat will be used. These early conversations ensure we deliver a custom boat that will exceed your expectations.

The design process kicks off with a consultation with Tim Winters, where line drawings are created using arrangements that fit your needs. The concept is then developed  into three-dimensional structures of the hull and exterior surfaces. Once the exterior shapes are created, the model is peeled back and the inner working layers are built out. After this process is complete, you are presented with full renderings—a glimpse through the window into exactly how your new vessel will look.  Each boat is engineered to turn heads, get looks, and exceed performance standards. With each level of design, you are personally involved to make sure we are creating exactly what you want.

As our team works away from the hull construction, we utilize more composite materials. The bulkheads and decks are laid up out of composite core infused with epoxy and fiberglass. Superstructures and parts are also laid up on jigs from the CNC machine and are constructed using a bead and cove method. Our craftsmen combine technology and old-world craftsmanship through each step to ensure we are building the finest boats on the water. Each vessel is built using the best of materials and standards to ensure the quality of the product.

We pride ourselves on designing and fabricating every component of our boats. Each element is developed and built by our local machinist and fabricators. This affords us the utmost control and guarantees we have limitless capabilities. We strive to adhere to ABYC standards throughout the boat building process.

“It was created as the conduit for a thrilling experience—watching whales around the boat, dolphins surfing bow waves or passing glaciers in icy waters,” says Enrique Tintore, design manager for the Dutch line of expedition yachts , ranging from 197 to 345 feet. “The idea is to maximize the connection with nature, to look down over the front of the bow and feel an unusual connection. That’s something you can’t do on any other yacht.”

The open bows of Ferretti Yachts’ Infynito 90 , and recently announced Infynito 80, are less concerned with off-grid travel, but more about social possibilities. More cruiser than explorer, the 90 has an “All Season Terrace” that connects directly with yacht’s outer passageways all the way back to the aft cockpit. The 90’s bow area is designed to be private, but still open, configured with lounges, a forward sunpad and Jacuzzi. Owners can even opt for a cocktail bar with stools. Like the Damen Xplorer, it has open sides and an open front, but the overhead offers protection with slats that can open if the owner and guests want direct sunlight. “We created it as an oasis to put the people living on board front and center,” says Ferretti’s Filippo Salvetti.

Both designers claim there are no structural downsides to these unusual bows, though Tintore admits that “green water” could wash over the front during rough-water crossings. “But guests can just step back into the enclosed observation lounge to enjoy the action with a cocktail.”

For the last few years, we have taken on more and more projects involving the protection of your investment. Our fender hooks are custom fit to your railings and bulwark with water, oil, and weather resistant leather available in several colors and opportunities to add your yacht name or insignia.

We are also able to fabricate hooks to store your paddleboards, fishing rods or tender whips; opening up even more toy storage onboard.

For the bigger toys such as your personal watercraft, tenders, or even seaplanes and submarines, we can assist with custom fitting of solid core transom fenders which satisfy both form and function for your yacht.
