What’s  next.

Each week you’ll receive an email about Long Beach Yacht Club and choose an experience that guides your immersion into our way of life. You can always return to this page at any time for information regarding your new membership!

We are known for our signature sailing regatta - Congressional Cup - yet we were founded in order to host a powerboat race.

The repeated use of a red star in our burgee is a wink to LBYC member Eddie Fink, who won the Star Class World title in 1932.

Star Boats were an Olympic class sailboat, and the win was key to Long Beach's fleet to be sponsors in the 1932 elimination rounds for the Olympics. (Gilbert Gray of New Orleans ended up representing Long Beach).

The palm trees in the club's parking lot were all planted over one weekend by LBYC volunteers. The trees arrived from a farm in Palm Springs in two pickup trucks, and individual members sponsored the tree purchase - $25 apiece!

The lava rocks in the general manager’s office, the library, and the exterior round-about all came over on one vessel for the club's tiki architecture.

The LBYC pool is 25 yards and heated year-round.

Our race committee boat is named after our first commodore: Loynes.

The clubhouse was designed by Montierth and Stickland - well known mid century modern trailblazers. The building blends South Sea Island treatments with contemporary design glass walls.

Montierth and Stickland also designed the marine bazaar and the marina restrooms.

Our first clubhouse was donated to the Sea Scouts - a long-term relationship between the Scouts and the club that has continued.

Devon Yacht Club Wants to Demolish and Draw Back

east bay yacht club

The Devon Yacht Club, which hopes to proceed with a large-scale redevelopment of its 120-year-old facility, came before the East Hampton Town Planning Board last week.

The club is proposing to demolish all the buildings on its 13.82-acre site, which pre-exist adoption of the town’s zoning code, and to rebuild elsewhere, farther from Gardiner’s Bay. Many variances will be needed, as well as a special permit.

The cost of the project will exceed 50 percent of the current market value of the existing buildings. “This is going to cost tens of millions of dollars,” said Richard Warren of Inter-Science Research Associates, speaking for the yacht club. “It’s been designed in a way that is consistent with the town’s CARP [Coastal Assessment Resiliency Plan]. We met with the supervisor early on; he said this is a model project. There is a point where if it gets too onerous for them, they’re going to walk away. What they’ve asked for the planning board to do is give them a confirmation that you’re still on board with the concepts of what they’re trying to do here.”

Mr. Warren was speaking after Lisa Liquori, a former director of the East Hampton Town Planning Department, had presented a 29-page memo to the board, walking it through the positive impacts of the project but not shying away from its problems either.

Ms. Liquori was recently hired by the department to take over review of the project. “We were a bit surprised to learn three weeks ago that Ms. Liquori was brought in,” said Mr. Warren. “There is narrative in the report that talks about scaling back the project.”

Tina Vavilis LaGarenne, the assistant planning director, said the department had been consistent. “I don’t think concerns about the scale of the project are new,” she said. “One of the original suggestions was that a tennis court be removed and revegetated.”

“That’ll be the end of the project,” said Mr. Warren.

“One tennis court?” asked Samuel Kramer, the board chairman.

“One tennis court,” answered Mr. Warren.

“There’s a lot going on,” Ms. Liquori told the board. “Whether the lot area is sufficient for a yacht club — the code says 10 acres is needed — when you subtract wetlands and the dune area, this is a six-and-a-half-acre site. There will be more than five acres of disturbance, more than 17,000 square feet of building removal, another 27,000 square feet of new buildings being constructed and a lot of new fill brought in.” Town planners have calculated it will take 274 truck trips for a triple-axle dump truck with a 20-cubic-yard capacity to bring in all the fill. Then, of course, the trucks have to leave. “We’re concerned. This is a big project in a residential area.”

Ms. Liquori questioned the adequacy of the parking plan (226 spaces are required; Devon proposes 78) among other issues, and reiterated that the Planning Department wants more information about the club’s membership numbers. Devon has agreed to covenant the maximum membership at 400. “Are there 400 members right now? Does that cap allow for an expansion? We’re still trying to understand why there’s a 46-percent expansion in the buildings.”

“We question,” she continued, “whether the yacht club is a ‘reciprocal club,’ and whether that means, with the reciprocal club members, if that allows for an increase in intensity on the site, which would be facilitated by the increase in the buildings’ square footage.”

“The regrading of the primary dune north of the clubhouse remains a concern,” she went on, “and the narrative submitted does not clearly support the need for this work.” She emphasized that despite the parcel’s pre-existing non-conforming status, “all structures that don’t meet the dune crest setback will require variances.”

Mr. Warren reframed the proposal as a modernization of the site, rather than an expansion.

“We recognize this is a challenging site, and I’d like to think, the past 18 months we’ve been working with the town, that they’d recognize we’ve been honest and open with the information we provided,” he said. “There’s now a little bit of worry among Devon membership and the board of governors that this report may be steering this board away from the prior support it offered to us.”

He ticked off benefits to the town if the parcel is redeveloped: a new wastewater treatment system, drainage control, a landward retreat, FEMA compliance, doubling the amount of parking currently in place, removing non-native vegetation and adding over an acre of native plants. “We’re not bulldozing a dune,” he stressed.

“Devon has agreed to a covenant to cap the membership, something you don’t have at present. Devon can walk away from this and now you don’t have a cap,” Mr. Warren said. “It does have a certificate of occupancy and can stay operating as it is, warts and all, with the sanitary system in the wetlands and current grading. But they’re committed to making the facility better for the town.”

After that, the board seemed eager to assure the applicant that it was okay with the project.

“To the extent that you came here to take our temperature, I think you’re finding it’s 98.6 degrees. Steady and healthy,” said Samuel Kramer, board chairman. He did emphasize that the pile driving at the site would be a serious issue that could cause damage to neighbors’ homes. “Give us a serious construction protocol, to give neighbors the knowledge that it’s not going to be a winter of hell.”

“My best friend got married there in 1992 and we couldn’t fit into the bathrooms then,” said Jen Fowkes, a board member. “It’s a net gain for the town.”

Owl's Death Prompts Call for Bird-Friendly Building

Window strikes kill up to a billion birds annually and rank up there with cats and habitat destruction as the leading causes of recent steep declines. After the recent death of a much-watched Eurasian eagle-owl that was set loose from the Central Park Zoo, a bill calling for bird-friendly building measures has been revived in the New York Assembly and Senate.

Architect’s Descendants Visit East Hampton Gem

Michele L’Hommedieu Hofmann had no idea until retiring last fall and starting to research her family history how prominent a role her great-great-grandfather James H. L’Hommedieu had played in Long Island’s late-19th-century architecture. On a trip to New York that included a stop at an East Hampton house he designed for Robert Southgate Bowne, a founder of the Maidstone Club and first president of the Long Island Rail Road, she and her family got a crash course in L’Hommedieu’s work.

'East Bay Pirates' Suspects Arrested After A Year Of Terrorizing Houseboat And Yacht Owners

I f you’ve ever wondered what would happen if you mixed pirates with the Wet Bandits from “Home Alone,” we now have your answer. Police arrested three alleged seafaring burglars last week accused of robbing residents and businesses in the San Francisco Bay .

Surveillance video of a March 13 break-in at a business on San Francisco’s historic water front allowed police to pull a search warrant of small boats in the area, which led them to locating stolen property, the New York Post reports.

This is apparently a big moment for residents living on houseboats and yachts on the 800-foot-wide waterway. Over the past year, they’ve been dealing with theft and physical confrontations from the “East Bay Pirates.”Starting during the summer of 2023, these guys used small boats to raid larger ships and steal valuables onboard. Boat owners would fight back, chasing the pirates across the San Francisco Bay.

This all happened on the Oakland-Alameda Estuary, which separates the two cities. It includes multiple marinas with about 3,000 boat slips , and many of those slips are used as permanent houseboats and yachts.

Here’s how this all started, according to the New York Post :

Last summer and fall, maritime burglars used small, stolen, or discarded boats to ransack large vessels and steal anything they could get their hands on. Then they would either sink the ships or dump whatever was left of the boats miles away in Oakland Harbor or along its shorelines.

Some residents from the area shared their personal experiences of the situation in a number of municipal meetings last year, including the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission’s (BCDC) enforcement meeting, from The Post :

“The open shoreline of the (Oakland-Alameda) estuary is littered with sunken wrecks and derelict, end-of-life vessels, and crime has risen to truly intolerable levels,” former harbormaster Brock de Lappe said during an October BCDC meeting. “Multiple vessels have been stolen and ransacked. Victims have had to resort to personally confronting the criminals to recover their property without the benefit of police support. Is this an appropriate activity for a 79-year-old senior?” One woman said she rescued a man whose sailboat drifted into the bay without a motor or any way to get back to shore after one of the “pirates” cut his boat line during an argument. Other residents told Fox News Digital they chased would-be thieves across the bay, and they shared videos of the chase and surveillance footage. Dan Hill, who was one of the leaders in the area to bring the issue to the forefront, was one of dozens or more pounding the tables at municipal meetings, writing letters, and calling officials to address the problem. Each “attack” and theft can cost the owner thousands to tens of thousands of dollars, Hill told Fox News Digital in a previous interview. Over the weekend, he said the situation appeared to have been “cleaned up pretty good” and praised the arrests.

This issue has not been an easy one to solve. For months, there have been jurisdictional issues and lower law enforcement staffing levels. It didn’t really get solved until the Oakland and Alameda police departments, along with the Coast Guard , teamed up. Police officials told the outlet it’s a “regional approach” to protect the waterway.

Still, while these guys may be behind bars, that doesn’t mean the problem is solved altogether. Oakland police tell the Post that the case is ongoing and thefts in and around the estuary are still under investigation.
