Moore 24 Class

The Moore 24: A True Classic

America's first production line ULDB was a Moore 24. Like any classic, she has stood the test of time. After thirty plus years she still dominates every kind of winners list. She can surf at excess of 20 knots or slide nimbly across the water pushed by a faint breeze. She handles superbly in all conditions and is continually cited by independent experts for excellence in design, performance and craftsmanship. Undoubtedly, the Moore 24 is a true classic.

Re-Posted From Wikipedia

This fiberglass sloop is used primarily for racing and fast daysailing. In June 1975, the second hull out of the mold was sailed from Santa Cruz to Honolulu by David Ingalls and Jan Lippen-Holtz, thus demonstrating its seaworthiness. In the 1980 Singlehanded Transpac, three yellow Moore 24s were entered in the biennial race from San Francisco to Hanalei Bay, Kauai, Hawaii, sailed by Lester Robertson, Bob Boyes, and Chuck Hawley. It is said that, under the right set of conditions, a Moore 24 could beat a Transpac 52 to Hawaii, although that set of conditions ranks 3 standard deviations away from the mean.

The Moore won the 1992 Pacific Cup, a race from San Francisco to Oahu, overall, as well as division and double-handed class. It has also won class firsts in other Pac Cups.

Construction

The Moore 24 is constructed of vacuum-bagged fiberglass and balsa composite hull and deck structure with a Bruynzeel plywood interior. Of particular interest is the main bulkhead, which has a circular passage allowing access to the forepeak. The original hulls were partially cored in the bow and aft central portion of the hull. Later models had a complete balsa-cored hull. There are two quarterberths aft, and the forepeak can be outfitted with cushions to create a small double berth. The keel is constructed out of 1,050# of lead, covered in resin and gelcoat, producing an appendage that flows seamlessly from the hull. While bolted in place, the keel is not easily removed. The rudder is a fiberglass and foam sandwich with an aluminum rudder shaft. The precision of the finishing of the rudder and keel is a testament to the skill with which these boats were built.

The hull has a few design themes which make it stand out in appearance. The bow has a slight hollow, and the side view shows a reversed sheerline which maximizes interior space (such as it is). The original version had a flush deck with a small footwell for a cockpit with no coamings or seatbacks. In the late 1980s a "Sport" model was introduced with a low-profile wedge deck. Four Sport models were purchased by the University of California, Santa Cruz Sailing Program as one-design trainers.

The aluminum mast has a single set of spreaders, and is supported by 1x19 standing rigging. Originally the boats had double lower shrouds, but many have been converted to single lowers to allow the mast to bend more when racing. The rig is described as 15/16ths, meaning that the jibstay attaches about 18" below the masthead. This increases the power of the adjustable backstay to control the bend of the mast, and therefore the fullness of the mainsail. While the mast and boom were sourced from a number of companies, most of the later boats had spars from Ballenger Spars [1] , a local sparbuilder.

Approximately 160 Moore 24s have been built.

The Express 27 was greatly influenced by the Moore 24.

Love for the Moore 24

moore 24 yacht

Designed in the 1960s and first produced in 1972, the Moore 24 led the way for an entire generation of ultralight-displacement boats that would serve to cement the place of Santa Cruz, California, in the annals of yacht-racing history. Designed by famed surfer and sailor George Olson, the Moore 24 was first conceived as the longest, lightest way to make a racing keelboat that would use a Cal 20 rig. In the strong summer breezes and big swells of Monterey Bay and the San Francisco region, the little speedsters immediately proved their merit with solid construction and unrivaled off-the-wind performance, surfing past 50-foot IOR designs in local offshore races.

In 1975, a Moore 24 was sailed doublehanded to Hawai’i, further proving the boat’s seaworthiness. By 1980 production and popularity was at its peak, and three of the boats raced one-design in the biennial Singlehanded Transpac, a solo race from San Francisco to Kaua’i. The boat’s lightweight, easily handled sail plan and well-mannered, bow-high surfing characteristics made it a favorite of local ocean racers, earning an impressive racing record in the challenging Gulf of the Farallones and the Pacific Ocean.

Over the past 40 years, the Moore 24 has become an ageless classic in Northern California and all over the U.S. West Coast. With one-design fleets in Santa Cruz, San Francisco, and the Pacific Northwest, you’ll often find more than 30 boats at a big regatta. The 24’s cult-like following and long list of talented owners is a testament to the longevity and durability of this superb design.

In addition to one-design contests, Moores regularly win mixed-fleet races to this day. Collecting hardware in weekly beer-can races, local offshore races, and even races to Hawai’i, the oversized presence of the Moore 24 on the U.S. West Coast belies the fact that only 156 boats were built. Continuing their rich ocean-racing tradition, two Moore 24s were sailed singlehanded to Hawai’i in the 2012 Singlehanded Transpac. In a class that included several other Santa Cruz ULDBs and even a Transat 6.50, the Moore again reigned supreme, earning yet another class win in Hawai’i.

Ronnie Simpson is the owner of Moore 24 US 101.

Solo Pacific sailing: The adventures of Webb Chiles and his Moore 24 Gannet

Yachting World

  • June 1, 2020

Single-handed adventurer Webb Chiles outruns a south pacific storm as he sails between the US and New Zealand

solo-pacific-sailing-webb-chiles-gannet-reefed

Webb Chiles’s Gannet is a George Olson-designed Moore 24, a long-distance race-winning ultralight yacht built in the US

During the night the barometer dropped steeply and the wind began to veer. Now finally it was on the beam, which was good and bad. Gannet wasn’t thrashing into the waves, but she was heeled 30° to 40° and when waves broke, they rolled her dangerously.

Taking a flotation cushion, I made my way aft to the tiller, untied it and turned Gannet a bit farther off the wind, braced myself with my left sea boot on the far side of the cockpit and my right on the post through which the backstay controls run up to the mainsheet traveller bridge.

The overcast was dark, solid and low. It seemed to press down on Gannet and me. I could feel its weight. Rain was falling, colder than the water from the ocean.

Although it was 0900, the light was that of pre-dawn; and when darker lines came toward us, which I quickly learned meant a 5 to 10 knot increase in wind and torrential rain, the sky was night, but the surface of the ocean frothed ghostly white by wind and splashing rain drops.

solo-pacific-sailing-webb-chiles-wet-lens

Gannet was not hard to steer. But I lost vision in my right eye a few years ago and the waves were coming from starboard, slamming unexpectedly into and over us, literally blind-siding me – hard blows, as though being punched by a ranked heavyweight. Several knocked me from my seat, lifting my body so that I started to fall forward and down into the sea.

I couldn’t possibly leave the helm long enough to go below to get my safety harness so, steering with one knee, I looped a sail tie through the slotted toe rail and tied a bowline as a strap for my right wrist. As long as my arm remained attached to my body, I was going to be attached to Gannet .

When the heaviest rain hissed down, I couldn’t see the mast-mounted Velocitek and steered by feel, turning Gannet and surfing down waves. She ran beautifully true with no tendency to round up, her bow waves rising above the deck. When visibility returned I often saw speeds of 11 and 12 knots on the Velocitek, but by then Gannet had slowed, so I don’t know how fast she may have gone. Whatever the number, it’s the fastest I’ve ever sailed on a monohull.

solo-pacific-sailing-webb-chiles-gannet-interior

I couldn’t see my watch, but after what surely had been an hour, I started looking for land. Cape Wiwiki should be off the starboard bow. Cape Brett off to the south. But I found only cloud.

I had to twist my neck a long way to see the oncoming waves. Surfing down some, I turned up into others. A split-second decision, often based on how much crest was toppling, sometimes just on instinct. Still a few caught us and rolled Gannet almost to 90°, until feet braced, tiller in left hand, sail tie strap around right wrist, I was standing straight up almost parallel to the sea. As the wave passed gravity bought Gannet back onto her keel and sat me down.

Beneath my heavy set of foul weather gear, I was wearing a Polartec fleece and Columbia Omni-heat pants over my usual shirt and Levis. Despite rain and wave, they were staying dry and only my exposed hands were cold. My left knee began to feel the constant strain. I tried to ease it and take more weight on my right foot.

solo-pacific-sailing-webb-chiles-gannet-breakfast

Breakfast is usually oatmeal, trail mix, dried fruit, protein powder, dried milk and water

The last position I had seen on the iNavX app on my iPhone I use as Gannet ’s primary chartplotter before coming on deck put us 24 miles north of the waypoint at the entrance to the Bay of Islands. Surely we had covered seven or eight miles since then. But still no land.

Another estimated hour passed. We shouldn’t be more than 10 or 12 miles out. Perhaps less. Something should be visible. And then off to the south, clouds thinned and Cape Brett materialised followed by the ridge of land leading west from it.

Pleasure flooded over me, as well as water, both at seeing the familiar landmark – I based my last boat, The Hawke of Tuonela, in Opua for many years and the Bay of Islands is my favourite place in the world to keep a boat – and because it was the first solid indication that we were likely going to make it in before the wind backed.

solo-pacific-sailing-webb-chiles-gannet-selfie

At 78 years of age, Chiles still loves ocean passagemaking

A little later Cape Wiwiki appeared much closer. I began to steer more toward it, wanting to stay to windward as much as possible. I knew that even this close, we could still be in trouble if the wind suddenly backed and we were forced outside Cape Brett.

The low overcast continued to lift and patches of blue sky appeared ahead. I expected the wind and seas to diminish as we closed the distance to the land, but they remained at strength until Cape Wiwiki was abeam. As we entered the partial shelter of the nine-mile wide mouth of the bay, I was able to tie down the tiller for a few minutes and duck below to grab a protein bar and use the piss pot.

Gannet ’s bilge has a narrow sump. Usually in rough weather a couple of inches of water a day collects there and I pump it out with a hand pump that has a hose long enough to go out the companionway and reach overboard. Now heeled only 10° to 15°, the bilge was overflowing. I got the pump and emptied it. But when I went down later it was full again and I began to wonder if I had a problem.

solo-pacific-sailing-webb-chiles-gannet-cabin

Forepeak is used for sleeping in harbour

I took the protein bar back on deck just in time to see two of Gannet ’s handsome namesake birds glide across our bow. We still had 14 miles to reach the Quarantine Dock at Opua. While the water was smoother, lee rail-burying squalls continued to hit as we sailed deeper into the bay. I furled and unfurled the jib like a venetian blind, and alternately hand-steered, tied down the tiller, hand-steered…

Familiar islands drew closer. A cloud of birds around Bird Rock, white with guano. Vivid green hills. Exposed brown cliffs falling into the sea. Tiny foot long penguins bobbing on wavelets. I smiled when I saw Paradise Cove on Urupukapuka Island where I’ve often anchored and the lookout platform high on Roberton Island to which I’ve often hiked.

Not until we made the final dogleg turn beyond the rocky ledge off Tapeka Point just north of Russell did the wind moderate. I brought Gannet about and hove to so I could fit the outboard bracket, Torqeedo, fenders, dock lines and ‘Q’ flag. Then I turned us again and continued south under sail. I knew the way.

solo-pacific-sailing-webb-chiles-gannet-tonga

Sailing in Neiafu, Tonga, before the start of the passage to New Zealand

Just north of the car ferry crossing, within sight of the Quarantine Dock, the wind died. I furled the jib, turned on the Torqeedo and lowered the main. Misty rain began to fall as we covered the last 200 yards at dusk. Opua’s Quarantine Dock is the easiest to approach of any I know in the world. I had Gannet prepared to tie up port or starboard. With no wind, the tidal current was decisive. It was running out, so I continued forward to tie to port.

We were weeks ahead of the herd of boats sailing across the Pacific . The long marina breakwater, of which the northern 200 yards are the ’Q’ Dock, was empty. I turned the Torqeedo tiller arm to neutral, glided the last few feet, stepped off and tied dock lines. Then back on board to duck into the cabin for the bottle of Laphroaig in which I had saved an inch for this moment.

My two crystal glasses did not survive the Pacific, so I poured into a plastic tumbler, straightened up and, still wearing foul weather gear, stood in the companionway indifferent to light rain, which was nothing compared to the total immersions of the morning. The little sloop’s deck came to just above my waist. I looked around at familiar hills and took a sip. Then another.

The date was September 20, 2014. We had sailed from San Diego on May 20, 6,400 miles in four months. Actually because of crossing the International Dateline, a day less than four months.

Passage over. Ocean crossed. And, though an American not a New Zealander, I was home. The wind backed to the south-west that night and increased to 50 knots, closing the door on a 31ft cutter that left Neiafu the day after Gannet . She reached Opua a week and a day later. Water continued to trickle into the bilge from odd corners of Gannet ’s interior for several days afterwards and then stopped.

Double handed farallones race - since 1980, next running: april 13, 2024, the fun - the challenge - the experience.

SF BAMA’s Doublehanded Farallones Race begins in the shadow of the iconic Golden Gate Bridge and takes competitors over the San Francisco Bar to Southeast Farallon Island and back. It is the ideal short-handed offshore sailing event. The original ULDB and legendary Merlin won the event in the early years and boats as big as Santa Cruz 70s and as fast as Prosail 40s and Antrim 40 trimarans have set course records, while one design fleets such as the Moore 24, F-27, Express 27s and 37s, and various classes of J/boats often sign up en masse.

Southeast Farallon Island and its mates are, in essence, a line of granite rocks carved away from the California coast by the infamous San Andreas fault 26 miles West of the Golden Gate. On a clear day the islands appear oh so close, but it feels a long way if the Gulf has dished up sporty conditions.

Yes, the Doublehanded Farallones is tough event, but it’s the very nature of this race that has made the great sailors great. Yes, you will need safety gear, and yes, you will need to have your act together. This course demands good seamanship, not just in super-windy conditions, but in the light years too.

Yet this is one incredible body of water. One may see whales or sight the occasional sunfish and there are lots of bird species in the area. On calmer days fur seals and sea lions can easily be heard barking as you round the Islands. Oh, and Great White sharks migrate here to snack on those aforementioned seals too!

Sailors come back year after year because the Gulf of the Farallones can be a wonderful playground too. Both Monohull and Multihull course records were set in reaching conditions of a 15-knot southerly breeze! It's pretty rare, but it does happen. Our more typical wind direction is from the Northwest and can blow anywhere from light winds to mid-30’s. While most multihulls finish before dinner, don’t worry, we’ll be there for you all the way to the midnight cutoff if you need a bit more time.

The DHF provides stellar racing. The tactical decisions you make right off the start do make a difference, and the drag race out to the islands gives you the opportunity to find new gears you didn’t know you or your boat had. Once out there, rounding the SE Farallon can be tense, but once safely around, the fast reach home reminds crews why they do this race: It’s really fun!

moore 24 yacht

The Course has racers start between the Golden Gate Yacht Club and the X buoy, sail in either direction around the islands, keeping 1,000 feet from the islands at a minimum, and finish back at the X buoy by the Golden Gate Yacht Club.

The Islands

photo: Jan Roletto

The Farallon Islands, sometimes referred to as the Devil’s Teeth Islands, are actually part of the city of San Francisco, but while the hilly topography could be familiar, almost nothing else is.  The Farallon Islands are located approximately 24 NM offshore, and are the last bits of land heading west until mariners reach Hawaii. Waves batter the islands as Pacific Ocean swells rise up in the shallow waters surrounding the islands. The islands have no landing spot for boats.

The islands are a National Marine Sanctuary, with lots of seals and bird life.  There is a lighthouse and a research station on Southeast Farallon Island, where a few intrepid researchers spend a few weeks at a time studying the local birds and wildlife.

Conditions vary wildly at the islands.  They are sometimes shrouded in thick fog, where mariners rounding the islands will only see glimpses of the rocky outcroppings. Sometimes conditions are gentle. During eddy conditions offshore, you might see 10 knots of breeze from the southeast instead of the prevailing northwesterly.  The islands definitely see their fair share of rough conditions.  Strong winds from the northwest in the mid-20s or higher during the summer are typical, as are strong storm winds from the south during the winter.  And that forbidding shoreline gets pounded by swells when conditions are rough or when there’s been a big storm in the Pacific.

The rounding of the islands can be intimidating when conditions are rough.  There are several shoal areas around the islands, and when the swell is up there can be large breakers.  Also, big waves refract off the island causing confused seas, throwing around rounding boats, adding to the intimidation factor.

Safety in Focus

The Gulf of the Farallones is a serious venue, with sometimes seriously rough conditions, and it’s important for boats and crew to be well-prepared to tackle the conditions and events that can occur. The Doublehanded Farallones Race has seen its fair share of fatal and near fatal incidents through its history.  Unfortunately, that includes four lives lost in a big storm in the 1982 race, one life lost in 1984 after a boat broke apart on the way back from the islands, and one life lost in 1999 after both crew members on a boat were washed overboard.  There have also been several dramatic rescues, often by fellow racers, after serious incidents (capsizes, pitch-poles, big waves, and crew overboard events).  And there have been several cases of serious equipment failures, including multiple incidents of lost steering and one lost keel.  Southeast Farallon Island was also tragically the site of the Low Speed Chase Incident in the 2012 OYRA Full Crew Farallones Race, where five lives were lost in the surf.

In the interest of safety, the 2024 Offshore Safety Equipment Requirements are in effect. Additional safety requirements are also listed in the NOR and Sailing Instructions.

Note that BAMA offers alternative solutions to allow certain boats to participate (e.g. for monohulls without lifelines, or for lifelines not meeting OYRA requirements, or to solve other issues for certain trailerable boats). Important: For the 2024 season, AIS transponders are now required for offshore races, but for the 2024 Doublehanded Farallones Race, we will allow any Jibeset-supported tracker, including the cellphone based Traccar app, for boats that have not yet installed AIS transponders.

BAMA carefully monitors the fleet during the race, and has radio check-in procedures for all boats left on the course after dark (except those that have AIS transponders where we can see their forward progress.) We also have a partnership with the San Francisco Ham Radio Club to ensure extended VHF radio coverage for the race track.

BAMA also offers regular training events on how to handle adverse situations, including live crew overboard training, and training on emergency steering.

Shoal Areas on the Race Course

Shoal Areas including Four Fathom Bank, Ocean Beach, and the South Bar in red

moore 24 yacht

Shoal Areas near the Southeast Farallon Island in red

There are several shoal areas on the race course that need to be taken very seriously any time the swell is up.  That includes several areas around Southeast Farallon Island, and areas closer to shore, including the Four Fathom Bank, the South Bar, and the area outside Ocean Beach.  It is very important to monitor your depth while rounding the islands, and also while exiting from and returning to the bay, to make sure that you are in deep enough water for the conditions.  Also note that because of the marine sanctuary, there is a 1,000 ft minimum standoff from any island or rock at the Farallones, and that includes Seal Rock on the south side of Southeast Farallon Island.

The Low Speed Chase incident in the 2012 OYRA Full Crew Farallones Race, where five sailors drowned, happened as a result of rounding the island too closely, in water that was too shallow for the wave conditions.

moore 24 yacht

The fatal course, which abruptly turns at a right angle where the boat was rolled by a rogue wave, is shown above in red. All crew members except one were swept overboard, and the boat was ultimately washed up on Maintop Island.

The second red course shown, even closer to the island, was recorded by the same boat, Low Speed Chase, the year before.

Some Interesting Race Facts

The 4-hour Barrier for Elapsed Time for Multihulls:

Very fast multihulls have participated in the Doublehanded Farallones Race over the years, and they have posted some of the fastest elapsed times in the race.  In the very first DHF in 1980, it took the fastest multihull just over 20 hours(!) to complete the course, but much faster times have been recorded since then.  And when the conditions are right, multihulls can really fly on this course, and have posted some staggeringly fast elapsed times.  Case in point: the record-breaking 1992 race, when two multihulls finished in less than four hours (the Antrim 40 trimaran Aotea , and the ProSail 40 TomCat – which is still the course record holder).   Aotea recorded two other finishes under 5 hours, and one under six hours, and two other multihulls have been under six hours (the Antrim 30+ trimaran Erin , in 1999 and 2005, and the 48-ft catamaran Wind Warrior , in 1987).

The 6-hour Barrier for Elapsed Time for Monohulls:

It’s tough to do for doublehanded monohulls, but the 6-hour barrier has been broken by monohulls just twice: Once by the Santa Cruz 70 Mongoose , in 1992, and once by the Owen Clarke Open 50 Truth , in 2012.  Several other monohulls have gotten close, but getting under 6 hours requires the combination of a fast boat and the right conditions for going fast!

The 7-hour Barrier for Corrected Time:

Similar to the 6-hour barrier for elapsed time, the 7-hour mark has proven to be an almost unbreakable barrier for corrected time.  Since 1998, only one boat had managed to do it.  However, in the 2022 race, which had fantastic conditions, three multihulls managed to squeak just below: Papillon, Entourage and Greyhound , finishing with corrected times within just a few minutes of each other.  For monohulls, in 2011, the Moore 24 Nevermoore missed out by just 57 seconds, correcting out at 7:00:57.  Quite a few boats, both multihulls and monohulls, have finished with corrected times between 7 and 8 hours, but cracking through the 7-hour barrier is very hard to do!

However , when the conditions are just right, much faster corrected times are possible.  In the record-breaking 1992 race (all DHF records for both elapsed and corrected time are from the 1992 race), both the multihull and monohull winners posted corrected times near the 4 ½ hour mark (see records below)!

The Most-Winning Boat Type on Corrected Time:

moore 24 yacht

The Moore 24!  The most-winning boat type on corrected time in the Doublehanded Farallones Race is the Moore 24, having won for monohulls overall 23 times!  The Moore 24 was America’s first production line Ultra-Light Displacement Boat (ULDB), and the boat still holds its own today.  With one of the largest racing fleets in the San Francisco Bay Area, the Moore 24 has a proud history in the DHF, with by far the most wins.  There were only three Moore 24s that participated in the 2023 race. All three finished. The 2023 Moore 24 winner (and overall Monohull winner): Topper II, Conrad Holbrook & Kim Dincel.

Standing Race Records

Multihull Elapsed Time: TomCat (1992) Zan Drejes / Jack Halterman; ProSail 40 Catamaran; Elapsed Time: 03:30:44.

We believe this is the fastest time ever recorded in any Farallones race (including full crew races).  The two other closest times that we know of: Aotea , in the same 1992 DHF race, finishing in 3 hours 48 minutes, and the Mod 70 Orion , finishing in 03:42:21 in the Full Crew Farallones Race in 2016.

Racer Profiles

David Hodges and Scott Walecka: The most-winning pair through the history of the Doublehanded Farallones Race is David Hodges and Scott Walecka, who won the monohull class overall on corrected time in the Moore 24 Adios on 9 of 10 tries in races between 1987 and 1999, missing out only once, in 1996, when they raced the Moore 24 Fatuity instead, and finished 4 th .  David Hodges also won for monohulls overall on corrected time in 2007, 2010 and 2021 with his Farr 38 Timberwolf, and was the fastest monohull on elapsed time in the 2023 race.

Peter Hogg: Former DHF Race Chair Peter Hogg posted a remarkable set of results in various multihulls between 1987 and 1994, and posted the fastest elapsed time a total of seven times, five of them as skipper – twice in the 40-ft catamaran Tainui , and three times in Aotea , his Antrim 40 trimaran, and twice as crew – on the 48-ft catamaran Wind Warrior , and on the 30-ft trimaran Erin.  With Aotea , he posted the second-fastest elapsed time in the race ever in 1992, finishing in 3 hours 48 minutes.

Just days after that race, Peter sailed Aotea from San Francisco to Tokyo, and posted the record that still stands for that distance, recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records, finishing in just 34 days, 6 hours, 26 minutes.

Unfortunately, Aotea was lost in the 1995 Doublehanded Farallones Race after pitch-poling on the way back to the bay.  The boat eventually drifted upside down to Micronesia.

The Antrim 40 trimaran Aotea in either the 1991 or 1992 DHF race. Joe Therriault: Former BAMA Commodore and former DHF Race Chair Joe Therriault posted strong results in DHF races between 1980 and 1992 with this Buccaneer 33 trimaran Sundowner .  He posted the fastest elapsed time four times (1980, 1984, 1989 and 1990), and he still holds the multihull corrected time record from 1992.

Hill “Buzz” Blackett: In the last decade, Buzz Blackett has posted the most wins for monohulls, posting the fastest elapsed monohull time six times with his Antrim Class 40 California Condor , and winning for monohulls overall on corrected time in 2020 with his Antrim-27 monohull Io . Most recently, Buzz posted the best elapsed and corrected time for the ULDB class in the 2021 race with Io .

Jim Antrim: Naval architect Jim Antrim has a special history with the Doublehanded Farallones Race.  He has designed several of the multihull and monohull winners over the years, including the 40-ft trimaran Aotea , the 30-ft trimaran Erin , the Class 40 monohull California Condor , and the 27-ft monohull Io .  In addition, he has crewed in the race on many of these same boats, posting the fastest elapsed time for multihulls five times (three times on Aotea , twice on Erin ), and the fastest elapsed time for monohulls four times on California Condor .  Jim most recently posted the best elapsed and corrected time in the ULDB class in the 2021 race as crew on the Antrim-27 Io .

2024 Race Updates

For 2024, the race is returning to its traditional early-season April date. Th e2024 race date will be Saturday, April 13, 2024.

  • BAMA will continue its partnership with the San Francisco Ham Radio Club to provide improved VHF communication. Gone are the days with radio silence as the race committee relay station now beams live from near Land’s End with high power antennas and radio equipment.
  • We are moving the start back to the Golden Gate Yacht Club. That means a shorter path to get to the start in the morning!
  • Racers will again have the option of sailing inside Mile Rock to avoid current, and will again have the option to round the Southeast Farallon Island in either direction for improved tactical choices.  Most of the winners from the 2022 race tacked around, leaving the island to starboard.
  • The standard YRA safety equipment requirements will apply, but BAMA will continue to offer its alternate solutions to allow additional boat classes to participate (e.g. Moore 24 and Express 27 fleets, various trailerable boats). Note that for the 2024 season, AIS transponders are now required for offshore races, but for the 2024 race, BAMA will accept any Jibeset-supported tracker, including the cellphone-based Traccar app. BAMA remains committed to helping racers find solutions to meet safety requirements. Our goal is to facilitate participation from as many boats as possible.
  • Our pre-race briefing includes topics like safety, weather and conditions expected, plus how to stay safe in the shipping lanes and avoid ship traffic.
  • Live scoring via Jibeset! As soon as anything happens on the course, we post it, throughout the day, starting as soon as all fleets have started!
  • Live position reports for boats with trackers, including automatic position updates for boats with AIS transponders, relayed to shore via select boats equipped with AIS position relay units.

Coming From Outside the Bay Area?

Every year, we have participants in the Doublehanded Farallones Race from outside the Bay Area, including registrants from Southern California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, and often from places further afield.  To simplify participation for crews traveling from out of town, we've taken the following steps:

  • Both the skippers meeting and the awards meeting are virtual, conducted over Zoom, and the meetings are recorded and posted for anytime replay
  • We ship the commemorative souvenir items directly to your home.  You don't need to show up in person anywhere to pick them up.  We will make suitable arrangements for awards if you win your class or a perpetual trophy
  • If you are trailering your boat to the area, please review our guide to Launch Ramps in the San Francisco Bay Area

The anchorages closest to the start and finish line are:

  • Aquatic Park, on the San Francisco cityfront: https://www.nps.gov/safr/planyourvisit/aquaticparkcove.htm  (reservation required for overnight anchoring)
  • Richardson Bay, between Sausalito and Belvedere, across the bay from the finish
  • Ayala Cove on Angel Island: https://angelisland.org/visitor-information/boating-camping/  (beautiful and very well-protected anchorage with moorings up to 50 ft)
  • Clipper Cove on Treasure Island (large and well-protected anchorage on the leeward side of Treasure Island)

Another anchorage option, outside the Golden Gate, close to the start, is Bonita Cove, just inside Point Bonita, which offers good protection during northwesterly winds (but is much less protected in winds from the south).

There are also many yacht clubs and marinas around the bay that may be able to offer guest slips.  The ones in San Francisco, Sausalito or Tiburon are going to be closest to the start and finish, but there are many yacht clubs and marinas in Alameda, Emeryville, Berkeley, and Richmond that are also within fairly easy reach of the start and finish.

See You at The Race!

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

moore 24 yacht

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

moore 24 yacht

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

moore 24 yacht

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

moore 24 yacht

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

moore 24 yacht

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

moore 24 yacht

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

moore 24 yacht

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Chinese coast guard ships hit a Philippine supply boat with water cannons Saturday in the latest confrontation near a disputed shoal in the South China Sea , causing injuries to its navy crew members and heavy damage to the wooden vessel, Philippine officials said.

The United States and Japan immediately expressed their support to the Philippines, as well as alarm over Chinese forces’ aggression off the Second Thomas Shoal , which has been the scene of repeated confrontations between Chinese and Philippine vessels over the past year.

The far-flung shoal has been occupied by a small contingent of Philippine navy and marines on a marooned warship since 1999, but has been surrounded by Chinese coast guard and suspected militia vessels in an increasingly tense territorial standoff . It’s the second time the Philippine boat Unaizah May 4 has been damaged by the Chinese coast guard’s water cannon assault in March alone.

The repeated high-seas confrontations have sparked fears they could degenerate into a larger conflict that could bring China and the United States into a collision.

Washington lays no claims to the busy seaway, a key global trade route, but has deployed Navy ships and fighter jets in what it calls “freedom of navigation” operations, which China has criticized .

The U.S. has also warned repeatedly that it’s obligated to defend the Philippines — its oldest treaty ally in Asia — if Filipino forces, ships or aircraft come under an armed attack, including in the South China Sea.

U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said in a statement Saturday that the United States “stands with its ally the Philippines and condemns the dangerous actions by the People’s Republic of China (PRC) against lawful Philippine maritime operations in the South China Sea on March 23.”

He said the Chinese ships’ “repeated employment of water cannons and reckless blocking maneuvers resulted in injuries to Filipino service members and significant damage to their resupply vessel, rendering it immobile.”

Escorted by two Philippine coast guard ships, the Unaizah May 4 was en route to deliver supplies and a fresh batch of Filipino sailors to the territorial outpost in the shoal at dawn Saturday when they were blocked and surrounded by Chinese coast guard ships and suspected militia vessels.

“Their reckless and dangerous actions culminated with the water cannoning of Unaizah May 4, causing severe damage to the vessel and injuries to Filipinos onboard,” a Philippine government task force dealing with the territorial conflicts said without elaborating.

The two Philippine coast guard patrol ships maneuvered through the Chinese blockade to treat the injured Filipino crew members and tow the disabled supply boat away. Another motorboat managed to transport the new batch of Filipino sailors and supplies to the Philippine outpost in the shallows of the shoal despite the Chinese coast guard’s attempt to block them by placing a floating barrier in the waters, Philippine officials said.

The hostilities dragged on for about 8 hours, they said.

“The Philippines will not be deterred — by veiled threats or hostility — from exercising our legal rights over our maritime zones,” the government task force said in a statement. “We demand that China demonstrate in deeds and not in words that it is a responsible and trustworthy member of the international community.”

Chinese coast guard spokesperson Gan Yu said the Philippine vessels intruded into what he said was China’s territorial waters despite repeated warnings. “The China coast guard implemented lawful regulation, interception and expulsion in a reasonable and professional manner,” Gan said.

Washington’s ambassador to Manila, MaryKay Carlson, said that “the U.S. stands with the Philippines against the PRC’s repeated dangerous maneuvers and water cannons to disrupt” the Philippine coast guard’s “lawful activities” in Manila’s exclusive economic zone.

Japan’s ambassador-designate to Manila, Endo Kazuya, reiterated his country’s “grave concern on the repeated dangerous actions by the Chinese coast guard in the South China Sea, which resulted in Filipino injuries.”

Aside from China and the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei also have overlapping claims in the resource-rich and busy waterway, which Beijing continues to claim virtually in its entirety despite a 2016 international arbitration ruling that invalidated its expansive claims on historical grounds.

Video released by the Philippine military shows two Chinese coast guard ships hitting the smaller wooden-hulled boat Unaiza May 4 with high-pressure water cannon sprays at close range, causing the boat to shift in the high seas.

Chinese coast guard previously blasted the Unaizah May 4 with high-pressure water cannons in a confrontation near the Second Thomas Shoal on March 5, shattering its windshield and slightly injuring a Filipino admiral and four of his men with glass shards and splinters of debris.

The Department of Foreign Affairs in Manila summoned China’s deputy ambassador after the March 5 confrontation to convey a protest against the Chinese coast guard’s actions, which it said were unacceptable.

Associated Press writer Matthew Lee in Washington contributed to this report.

Moore’s 21 points and 10 rebounds lead No. 1 seed Texas past No. 8 Alabama 65-54

Aaliyah Moore missed most of last season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee. She has tendinitis in the other knee.

Undeterred, Moore matched her career best with 21 points, had 10 rebounds and made a timely defensive play in the fourth quarter to help No. 1 seed Texas beat Alabama 65-54 on in a second round women’s NCAA Tournament game.

“My team needed me today,” said Moore, who played 34 minutes after logging just one in the second half against Drexel on Friday. “It was kind of just a choice of being smart, knowing when I need to be out there and when I don’t. I just made sure I got a good night’s rest. I came early today, got treatment and was ready for the game.”

Texas (32-4) has its most victories since finishing 32-3 in 1987-88.

Freshman Madison Booker also scored 21 for Texas, which will face the Utah-Gonzaga winner in the Sweet 16 on Friday in Portland, Oregon. Booker wears No. 35 in honor of former Longhorn Kevin Durant, who was at the game, sitting behind their bench.

“That was nice,” Booker said. “He can give us lessons if he hears this.”

Said Moore, “Before halftime I turned around and was like oh, ‘hey, KD.’ We really do appreciate the support, and we always appreciate the shoes.”

DeYona Gaston had seven of her nine points, and six of her seven rebounds, in the second half for Texas. Taylor Jones had four of the Longhorns’ 11 blocked shots.

Jones left the game midway through the first quarter after falling and hitting the back of her head on the court while contesting a rebound. She went to the locker room but returned in the second quarter.

Sarah Ashlee Barker scored 17 for Alabama (24-10), a No. 8 seed, and Aaliyah Nye added 14. But Barker, guarded primarily by Moore, hit just 7 of 19 shots from the field. Nye, guarded by Shay Holle, was 6 for 18.

“Our kids went out today and really played so hard defensively,” Texas coach Vic Schaefer said. “Did a great job on two kids that I think are so good in Nye and Barker. You don’t do that without playing your heart out.”

Moore, who isn’t known as a 3-point shooter, made one to beat the 30-second shot clock and give Texas a 45-32 lead with 3:39 left in the third quarter.

Early in the fourth quarter, she ran down Del’Janae Williams and blocked her fast-break layup attempt that could have cut the Texas lead to six.

“We talked about, before the game, you’re playing against a really tough, physical aggressive team,” Schaefer said. “Very athletic. And that’s the SEC. So you better play that way. That was my challenge to them. You better play athletic. You better play in the air. You better block shots, alter shots.”

Essence Cody, the 6-foot-4 freshman who scored a season-best 20 points against Florida State on Friday, was limited to six by a rotation of three Texas post players.

“They’re just big,” Alabama coach Kristy Curry said. “They just run waves at you.”

Alabama had difficulty with the Longhorns’ size in several areas. Texas had edges of 45-34 in rebounds, 23-13 in second-chance points, 34-22 in points in the paint and 11-2 in blocks.

“Obviously, you saw that we struggled with that,” Nye said. “They’re similar to the LSUs the South Carolinas that we have in the SEC. I think we just have to be tougher.”

AUSTIN — Aaliyah Moore matched her career best with 21 points, had 10 rebounds and made a timely defensive play in the fourth quarter to help No. 1 seed Texas beat Alabama 65-54 on Sunday in a second round women’s NCAA Tournament game.

Texas (32-4) has its most victories since finishing 32-3 in 1987-88.

DeYona Gaston had seven of her nine points, and six of her seven rebounds, in the second half.

Moore, a starting forward, plays with tendinitis in her right knee, not the left one in which she suffered a season-ending torn anterior cruciate ligament early last season. She played 34 minutes after logging just one in the opening win over Drexel on Friday.

Why Wes Moore wishes Kellie Harper, Lady Vols basketball weren't playing NC State in March Madness

moore 24 yacht

RALEIGH, N.C. –  Kellie Harper and Wes Moore still remember their days recruiting together for Chattanooga basketball fondly, especially the first summer when Harper was only 24 years old.

They both told the same story Sunday, though they had slightly different versions. According to Harper, Moore doesn't like to pay full price for a lot of things. So Moore, who now coaches at NC State, didn't want to pay the extra fees for a driver under 25 and didn't let her rent the car for recruiting. Harper would ride shotgun and read the map, and sometimes the Lady Vols coach's directions came at the last minute.

"We would just about have passed the road, and she'd go, 'Oh, we're supposed to turn right there!' " Moore said. "I would just whip it and turn right."

To Harper, Moore's driving was perfect for her directions.

"We were going to get off no matter how late that decision was made," Harper said. "We were a pretty good match from the first moment we worked together, for a lot of reasons."

FOLLOW THE MADNESS: NCAA tournament brackets, scores, schedules, teams and more.

On Friday morning, before all the craziness of the weekend started, Moore got to Reynolds Coliseum early to catch Harper and her husband and assistant coach, Jon, before her practice began. He stood on the court chatting with the Harpers, the trio now 20 years removed since they all coached together at Chattanooga from 2001-04. They all call each other their dearest friends, and neither side is excited about having to end the other's NCAA Tournament run Monday .

"On one hand it's great to see them and visit with them a little bit," Moore said Friday. "On the other hand, I wish they weren't here."

The moment they have all tried to avoid for years is upon them. They're squaring off again for the first time since the Harpers coached at Western Carolina, which was in the same conference as Chattanooga, where Moore coached from 1998-2013. The No. 6 seed Lady Vols (20-12) will face No. 3 seed NC State (28-6) on Monday (4 p.m. ET, ESPN) in the second round.

Moore said they have tried to avoid playing each other besides preseason scrimmages in the fall, which they schedule often.

"You hate to play really close friends," Moore said. "We've been fortunate to dodge it as long as we have."

Kellie Harper had similar feelings, saying it can be fun to play a familiar face, but it's tough because "it's somebody we pull for" and "respect a lot."

Moore's connection with Kellie goes further back than being his assistant at Chattanooga. Moore said he tried to recruit Kellie Harper out of high school when he was an assistant at NC State. But they may have never become dear friends if Moore hadn't lured her away from her first assistant coaching job at Auburn when he was coaching at Chattanooga.

But Moore found a way: He offered Jon Harper a job as the third assistant coach.

"That's how I pulled that off, man," Moore said. "And Jon didn't make much money, but he had two responsibilities: Go to lunch with me every day and play golf anytime I wanted to. So it was a pretty good job. I can't believe he left me and went with Kellie, to be honest."

LOCKER ROOM: Lady Vols basketball had a dominant start to March Madness. Locker room told us a lot.

Kellie Harper eventually left Chattanooga for her first head coaching job at Western Carolina from 2004-09 before getting hired at NC State in 2009. She was fired in 2013 and the Wolfpack hired Moore.

Jon Harper and Moore still vacation together every year , spending a week in Las Vegas with friends every August. Moore joked that Jon Harper probably wins and loses "a whole lot more" money than he even brings with him.

"They've got an agreement they don't talk about his gambling unless he either wins or loses a million dollars," Moore said. "So, so far he hadn't had to tell Kellie much."

Texas vs. Alabama score, highlights: Booker, Moore score 21 as Texas advances to Sweet 16

moore 24 yacht

Texas will join the SEC on July 1, so a women's basketball matchup between the Longhorns and Alabama won't be such a rarity — the last time they played each other was 40 years ago — but Sunday's game took on extra meaning: a berth into next weekend's Sweet 16 was on the line. The No. 1-seeded Longhorns and No. 8 Alabama met in the NCAA Women's Tournament round of 32 the day after the Texas men bowed out in the second round of the men's tournament.

These were our live updates and scores throughout the game.

Texas vs Alabama live score updates in NCAA second round

No. 1 texas blasts alabama, advances to the sweet 16.

No. 1-seeded Texas has blown past No. 8 Alabama 65-54, playing its final game on its Moody Center home court.

FOLLOW THE MADNESS: NCAA tournament brackets, scores, schedules, teams and more.

Madison Booker and Aaliyah Moore both scored 21 points to lead Texas, which led by seven at halftime and never was threatened in the second half.

The Longhorns (32-4) will play either Utah or Gonzaga in the Sweet 16 on Friday in Portland, Ore. Utah and Gonzaga play their second-round game on Monday night (9:30 p.m,, ESPN2). This is Texas' third Sweet 16 in head coach Vic Schaefer's four years.

No. 1-seeded South Carolina improved to 34-0 with its 88-41 win over No. 8 North Carolina. The two other No. 1 seeds are playing Big 12 opponents on Monday. Top-seeded Iowa (30-4) plays No. 8 West Virginia (25-7) at 7 p.m. (ESPN) and No. 1 USC (27-5) meets No. 8 Kansas (20-12) at 9 p.m. (ESPN).

No. 1 Texas has Alabama reeling in 4th

Texas leads 59-45 with 4:39 left to play.

DeYona Gaston's turnaround jumper in the lane gave Texas a 52-40 lead and then Aalyiah Moore made it 55-40 on a put-back shot off an offensive rebound. Sarah Ashleet Barker hit a jumper and a 3-point shot on back-to-back possessions to cut the lead back to 10, but Gaston scored again down low for a 57-45 advantage.

Madison Booker wowed the Moody Center crowd with a full-court play that began with a defensive rebound, continued with an around-the-back dribble to get past Alabama's Aaliyah Nye near midcourt and then finished it off with a physical, driving layup. Alabama called timeout.

Texas controls the third quarter, leads Alabama

Madison Booker's drive to the basket with the shot clock winding down, followed by her around-the-back dribble and dish to an open Aaliyah Moore on the right side and Moore's subsequent 3-point shot to give Texas a 45-32 lead with 3:24 left in the third quarter, and the Longhorns take a 48-38 lead into the fourth of this NCAA Women's Tournament second-round game against Alabama.

Top-seeded Texas, which was favored by 15 points, took a 7-point lead into halftime and a 10-point advantage into the fourth period.

Shaylee Gonzales has made notable plays on both ends of the floor — she's got three rebounds and an assist, but isn't doing much offensively — and Texas' defense has clamped down on the Crimson Tide. Taylor Jones blocked an Essence Cody shot with 4:24 left in the third and then gave Texas a 42-30 lead with a free throw after making an offensive rebound. And Shay Holle had a key rebound late in the period that sparked a DeYona Gaston basket for a 48-35 lead.

Aaliyah Nye hit a 3-pointer with 45 seconds left to cut it to 10, but Karly Weathers missed a driving layup under defensive pressure from Aaliyah Moore.

Here's how Alabama opened the second half: three missed jumpers, a missed layup and one Loyal McQueen 3-pointer. Texas, meanwhile, converted three layups and a Madison Booker jumper into a 41-30 lead with 5:48 left in the third.

Texas takes 7-point lead into halftime over Alabama

Texas leads Alabama 31-24 at halftime.

The first half, in a nutshell:

1. Texas is winning with physicality. The Longhorns are outrebounding the Crimson Tide 20-15, including nine offensive rebounds, and Alabama's subsequently shooting 35.7%.

2. Alabama has 11 turnovers.

3. Madison Booker leads all scorers with 12 points, and Aaliyah Moore has 8. Alabama's Aaliyah Nye has hit a couple of big shots and leads the Crimson Tide with 7.

Alabama missed a 3-pointer from the corner that could've cut the lead to 27-25. Instead, Madison Booker got a friendly roll around the rim for a 29-22 lead, and then stole it right back on Alabama's next possession. Taylor Jones missed a good look down low that could have made it a 31-22 game, but Booker picked Loyal McQueen — Alabama's 11th turnover — and DeYona Gaston made it 31-24 with a pair of free throws.

Each time Bama makes it close, Texas finds breathing room

There's 4:57 left in the first half. No. 1-seeded Texas is leading No. 8 Alabama 27-22.

Alabama's Aaliyah Nye (9 points so far) is keeping the Crimson Tide in this game with some timely jumpers. Her 3-pointer near the end of the first quarter cut Texas' lead from 17-11 to 17-14, and her jumper with 7:17 left in the second pulled Bama to within 21-18. And then Nye added a running jumper to make it 21-20.

Texas' Amina Muhammad made it 23-20 with a shot down low, but Bama answered when Karly Weathers scooped up Shay Holle's blocked shot of a Nye 3-point attempt and put it in for 23-22. But another offensive rebound for Texas led to a 25-22 lead, and then Madison Booker made it 27-22 with a pull-up jumper from the top of the key.

Alabama's up to eight turnovers. Texas has turned those into five points. And Texas is up to nine offensive rebounds.

The Longhorns have looked more interested in working the ball down low, where they have a size and physicality advantage closer to the basket, than working the outside. That includes Taylor Jones, who was shaken up near the end of the first period but re-entered the game with 7:27 left in the half after a quick visit to the locker room. She scored to make it 25-22 off — that's right, an offensive rebound.

End of 1st quarter: Texas leads Alabama 17-14

Texas takes a 17-14 lead into the second quarter. It was 17-11 until Bama's Aaliyah Nye hit a 3-pointer with 54 seconds left.

Texas center Taylor Jones was shaken up with 4:21 left in the period. She headed back to the bench slowly, where she was checked on by trainers. DeYona Gaston entered the game for her. The Longhorns quickly went back up 12-7 on an Aaliyah Moore put-back off an offensive rebound. And Moore added another basket on Texas' next possession for a 14-7 lead.

Booker's jumper later made it 17-9, and but the Crimson Tide cut it to 17-14 on Nye's 3-pointer.

The Longhorns had 26 offensive rebounds in Friday's win over Drexel. They have six so far today.

Texas is missing some chances, though. A Madison Booker steal led to a Texas fastbreak, but it didn't result in any points. Earlier, a brilliant Booker pass to a darting, open Shay Holle didn't result in a basket, and she missed one of two free throws after getting fouled on the shot.

Texas takes early lead

There's 4:43 left in the first period and this is a tight 8-7 game. The Longhorns jumped out to a 6-2 lead before Bama cut it to 6-5 on a Karly Weathers 3-pointer. Madison Booker made it 8-5 on a layup, but Alabama's Loyal McQueen answered with a layup of her own.

This game is off to a fast pace. Texas has the early rebounding edge, 6-4, including a 2-0 margin on offensive boards. The two teams have combined for five turnovers, but none of them have resulted directly into points.
