  • Sailboat Guide

Sea Wych is a 18 ′ 11 ″ / 5.8 m monohull sailboat designed by John V Sadler and built by Sadler & Son (UK) between 1970 and 1981.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Sadler Seawych 19 Ft Sailing Yacht Boat With Sails And Trailer

seawych yacht

Sadler Seawych 19 sailing yacht boat with sails and trailer Recently partially refurbished project which I've been slowly working on for 3 years, with a few jobs left for the new owner to complete it they wish. Affectionately named "Mudshark" or more recently "Tarka". The Seawych is a 19ft bilge keel trailer-sailor, sleeps 4 people in 1 double bed and 2 single berths. Decent 4’6” headroom, and approx. 6’6” berths.

There’s a single toilet and small galley with single camping stove and sink with manual hand pump tap. There’s plenty of locker space for storage. Have a Google for more information if you've not seen them before. Very rare setup; originally fitted with internal petrol engine which has since been removed, however the driveshaft, fuel connectors and exhaust fittings are still installed if wishing to re-convert. An outboard mount is fitted if you wish to add a long shaft outboard (not included).

I've saved some additional photos here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/NwfMrYgHnJi5hpx38 Interior Recently repainted interior with new carpet and backrests reupholstered. Seat cushions recently DIY reupholstered too (slight fabric colour mismatch, but close enough). Galley backboards recovered with vinyl. New LED interior lights and solar panel charger have been installed - although final wiring, solar panel, nav lights and battery need completing. Removable table-top that converts to double bed which has had a couple of rough coats of epoxy and would benefit a heavy sand/varnish.

Sink with space below for fresh and waste-water carriers (not included). Original toilet under the bow berth unchecked or tested. Rigging and sails Custom made stainless A-Frame permanently fitted to the bow, making single-handed raising and lowering of the mast etc a simple task (fantastic feature!). Original roller reefing mainsail on boom, and roller furling head-sail. Both in good used condition.

Halyards, topping lift and furling lines recently replaced with new. Main-sheet could do with being replaced. Rigging is in reasonable condition although old, and I'd recommend replacing some turnbuckles. Port and starboard original winches with winch handles included. If I were keeping, I'd fit a simple back-stay tensioner and possibly bring the lines back to the cockpit.

Main sail and jib in good, clean and still pretty crisp condition. Jib sheets tied on. Been stored inside in the dry since I bough the boat. Cockpit / deck Deck in reasonably good condition with original gel coat. Some small chips and cracks, with some having been repaired and some not.

New cockpit locker tops recently made from 12mm plywood and roughly epoxied, would benefit a sand/varnish to look better and give UV protection. Grab handles and hatch surround have been sanded and would benefit from the same. Original Houdini hatch has been removed and fully refurbished with all new seals. Has a slight leak so would benefit some sealing. Custom sprayhood fitted on stainless frame, recently washed and in good condition.

The plastic tracks it feeds into are a little tight and could benefit from changing to metal. Hull and keels The hull is in good condition with no significant damage or wear. A single coat of antifouling recently applied, with around half a tin supplied to apply a second coat. The surface was lightly sanded but isn't smooth. The blue painted hull sides have some fender/rope rub but are largely in good condition.

Keels and shoes in good condition, port keel has a tiny amount of weeping rust from the front. Tiller and rudder in good varnished condition with some marks/old repaired damage. Trailer Good overall condition with bearings recently removed, checked and re-greased. Brand new tyres fitted in March 2019, the spare a bit perished but usable in a pinch. Brakes free and in working order with one side’s pads recently de-laminating from their shoes, but have since been 2-part epoxied and clamped so is good to tow, although I'd recommend replacement pads if you plan to tow far or regularly.

Winch and jockey wheel work well. Extras Included is an anchor (but no chain, just some old warp), small gas camping stove, a selection of fenders/ropes/warps and a boarding ladder. Yellow horseshoe buoy and bracket installed to starboard push-pit, along with Ensign on the stern. 6m x 4m tarp included which is good to winter cover ashore. There’s a small spares box including shackles/pins etc.

I’ll also try to include my printed Seawych owner’s manual if I can find it (otherwise available from the Seawych Owners Association – which I highly recommend joining). I've some spare fabric, plus wire curtain line and hooks, which should be enough to fit curtains if desired. There’s also a light-board / extension cable, and ratchet straps/ropes to secure to the trailer. __________________________ Overall a fantastic practically ready to go boat for its age with almost everything you need to get you on the water, plus some small projects left to make it your own. I’ve listed the boat at what I feel is a fair price given the condition and what’s included, and how much has been spent on it (a lot more than I’m asking!).

That being said, I’m open to reasonable offers near the asking price. Naturally the boat is sold as seen and not necessarily as described. Viewing / collection is available just outside Peterborough, Cambridgeshire. A £100 deposit upon confirmation by PayPal/bank transfer is preferred, with the rest either in cash on collection – or cleared bank transfer before collecting. The boat is advertised on classifieds elsewhere.

Broker's comments.

The John Sadler designed and built Seawych is a chummy little bilge keeler from the early seventies. Back in those days she was considered to be a capable coastal cruiser, plenty big enough for a family of four to enjoy the sailing experience. Times change, and whilst cheesecloth and Abba tribute bands might still be popular, the fashion for 28" loons and 19ft family cruisers have declined a bit! Nevrtheless, this must be one of the nicest Seawych's I've seen in many a year. Clean, tidy, good headlinings, she's ready to launch and sail. Her present owner has bought a bigger boat to accommodate a growing family so she's looking for a new home. There is an active owner's association and a keen following for this capable little cruiser in its 40th birthday year. Go on, get Fernando on the I-Pod and cast off! These boat details are subject to contract. Note: Offers on the asking price may be considered.

NB: We will have her engine to photograph in next day or so.

Dear (previous) owner of Angharad, I'm a seawych owner who needs to put his seawych on land. But I don't know the dimentions of the twin keel. It would help me amazingly if you gave me the outer and inner distance of the two. I only know they are 'around 41 inches' apart from each other but I need to know the exact inner and outer measurements too. I hope you can help me and I look forward to your reply. Maas Bekooy

The Sea Wych Owners Association was founded in 1972 with the objectives of encouraging friendship, the exchange of ideas and to provide help for Sea Wych owners.  The Association continues to thrive with members in all parts of the country, most of whom either currently own a Sea Wych or have previously owned one.  Some members still own and sail the boats they built 30 or more years ago so providing a good knowledge base to share with newer members.

The Association operates at both national and regional levels with co-ordinators who are able to organise local sailing and social events.  An annual rally is held at Bembridge, on the Isle of Wight, during the Spring Bank Holiday weekend and the following week with emphasis on family fun and a full sailing programme.  Members have often sailed to attend the rally from other parts of the South and South East coast or have trailed their boats from further afield to a convenient mainland launching site.

Hello, I am new here. Recently bought a seawych 19 that needs some work internaly and keen to take down the internal partition walls to make an open space feel. I was told they are not structural, has any one done it? Any suggestions please?

SaltIre

Welcome to the forums. The "internal partion walls" might be structural bulkheads holding the deck/mast up and stopping the hull folding inwards. How knowledgable was whoever told you they weren't? There's a SeaWych 19 owners group on Facebook where you might get specific info. Seawych boat owners

Saltire has suggested the best way of getting information on the Seawych, but just a quick comment, I had a friend who several years ago had a Seawych, if I remember correctly there is an encapsulated beam that transverses the coach roof to provide support for the mast, BUT, I think the internal partitions provided additional support for this beam, and I would hesitate to remove them.

If they are structural you could cut a window or porthole in them? Or hang a mirror...

I built one and knew John Sadler quite well - and the bulkhead is structural. The boat is what it is and an excellent starter boat, but don't mess with it. If you want an open plan interior buy a boat that was designed as one.

VicS

I would hesitate to remove the main bulk bulkheads from any yacht where they are part of the original design. I have never heard of anyone removing them but I am aware that some owners fit a compression post to support the mast instead of replacing the support beam when it fails. There is, as mentioned, a Facebook Group. There is also a message board/forum . I suggest you join the Owners Association. You will then have access to the message board as well as the FB group, an online Owners Handbook, advice from the Association's team of "Technical advisors" and a four-monthly magazine . Still only £15 ! The mast support beam and the rudder fittings are the only two weaknesses I can think of.

My friends SeaWych did not have the mast support pole shown in your photo #6, so this would appear to be additional structural support for the mast, I would still think the bulkheads are part of the original design to provide support for the mast and the surrounding coachroof as well as adding stiffness to the hull, and as Tranona has said in #8 they are structural so be very careful about removing or modifying them.

Sadler Seawych 19 Ft Sailing Yacht Boat With Sails And Trailer

Advertised on May 21, 2019

seawych yacht

Sadler Seawych 19 sailing yacht boat with sails and trailer

Recently partially refurbished project which I’ve been slowly working on for 3 years, with a few jobs left for the new owner to complete it they wish. Affectionately named “Mudshark” or more recently “Tarka”.

Have a Google for more information if you’ve not seen them before.

Very rare setup; originally fitted with internal petrol engine which has since been removed, however the driveshaft, fuel connectors and exhaust fittings are still installed if wishing to re-convert. An outboard mount is fitted if you wish to add a long shaft outboard (not included).

I’ve saved some additional photos here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/NwfMrYgHnJi5hpx38

Recently repainted interior with new carpet and backrests reupholstered. Seat cushions recently DIY reupholstered too (slight fabric colour mismatch, but close enough). Galley backboards recovered with vinyl. New LED interior lights and solar panel charger have been installed – although final wiring, solar panel, nav lights and battery need completing. Removable table-top that converts to double bed which has had a couple of rough coats of epoxy and would benefit a heavy sand/varnish. Sink with space below for fresh and waste-water carriers (not included). Original toilet under the bow berth unchecked or tested.

Rigging and sails

Custom made stainless A-Frame permanently fitted to the bow, making single-handed raising and lowering of the mast etc a simple task (fantastic feature!). Original roller reefing mainsail on boom, and roller furling head-sail. Both in good used condition. Halyards, topping lift and furling lines recently replaced with new. Main-sheet could do with being replaced. Rigging is in reasonable condition although old, and I’d recommend replacing some turnbuckles. Port and starboard original winches with winch handles included. If I were keeping, I’d fit a simple back-stay tensioner and possibly bring the lines back to the cockpit.

Main sail and jib in good, clean and still pretty crisp condition. Jib sheets tied on. Been stored inside in the dry since I bough the boat.

Cockpit / deck

Deck in reasonably good condition with original gel coat.

Hull and keels

The hull is in good condition with no significant damage or wear. A single coat of antifouling recently applied, with around half a tin supplied to apply a second coat. The surface was lightly sanded but isn’t smooth. The blue painted hull sides have some fender/rope rub but are largely in good condition. Keels and shoes in good condition, port keel has a tiny amount of weeping rust from the front.

Tiller and rudder in good varnished condition with some marks/old repaired damage.

Good overall condition with bearings recently removed, checked and re-greased. Brand new tyres fitted in March 2019, the spare a bit perished but usable in a pinch. Brakes free and in working order with one side’s pads recently de-laminating from their shoes, but have since been 2-part epoxied and clamped so is good to tow, although I’d recommend replacement pads if you plan to tow far or regularly.

I’ve some spare fabric, plus wire curtain line and hooks, which should be enough to fit curtains if desired.

There’s also a light-board / extension cable, and ratchet straps/ropes to secure to the trailer.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

seawych yacht

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

seawych yacht

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

seawych yacht

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

seawych yacht

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

seawych yacht

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

seawych yacht

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

seawych yacht

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Restaurant-Yacht Chaika

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Pleasantly surprised, service is good so is the food. Great selection of Fusion food, a mixture of Italian, Japanese, European, Asian etc. A pleasantly nice dining experience, highly recommended, a must try!

Thank you for your feedback and invite you to have lunch or dinner again aboard the ship in an atmosphere of high standards of yacht hospitality.

everything was perfect - the food, the service, the desserts were the best, nice atmosphere and the location - magical

Best food, best view in Moscow. absolutely faultless from arrival to finish. Best risotto i had for many years absolutely perfectly cooked. The view on Ukrainian hotel and the white house by night is amazing

Had to wait for the food for 1.5 hours and then another 20 minutes for the check. Finally called for the manager and he offered... a 10% discount as a compensation. Simply pathetic! The food is mediocre at best. Not bad per se, but one... would expect something better considering the prices. There are many places to eat in area that are much better. Avoid this one at all costs. Food is very expensive, very pretentious, doesn't worth that money. Portions are very small. We ordered ravioli and there were 4! Four raviolis! For almost 15 euros. Then we asked to bring us dessert menu but nothing, they didn't even bothered, so we payed and left... without dessert. Very poor service for that price. More

This is a very good restaurant. The food is really good, maybe the best in Moscow. The service is also good. The view from the restaurant is great. The prices are very high.

I often visit this restaurant and must say it’s one of the best in Moscow in terms of quality and service. Staff really try hard to make sure that you are happy and satisfied. Customer service is a huge problem in Moscow but Chaika sets... a great example for others in the industry! Food is delicious and the menu has lots of options for everyone! Atmosphere is great and view is beautiful on the embankment. Special thanks to German & Oleg! More

Thank you for your feedback! Again aboard the yacht restaurant "Chaika" in accordance with the high standards of yacht hospitality.

Highly recommended, great location in the city center of Moscow with a superb atmosphere. Too many menu choices, though all delicious!

Thx a lot for your review! We are looking forward to see you in our restaurants.

Visited this lovely restaurant with a friend of mine. It was relaxingly warm August evening - so the place on the river seemed like a good idea. We came quite early and the restaurant was not full. The hostesses kindly offered several places to sit... and we chose to sit on the sofas. We had some wine, which was good. We struggled a bit when deciding about the food as few options (scallops) were not available. Fish on ice on display did not look very fresh. To be honest it was an unusually hot August and it is probably understandable that some see food options were not available. However, we did manage to order something and sat waiting and looking onto the river. My long-legged friend struggled sitting at the low sofa and the manager noticed that, offering as a very good, proper table beside the open window. It was nice touch and I was very pleased by their polite observations and immediate reaction to solve the problem. Food was quite good and presentation was perfect. Perhaps I can something about the food, but 1 visit is not enough to criticize or make a definitive opinion. Overall, quality place, which of course, does not come cheap. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation. More

Good location. Nice views. Good choice of food and drinks. European and Asian menu. Nice service. Pricey enough.

Had a large group dinner here. Food was above average and service quite good. The real attraction is the view of Moscow from the river on a nice night. Great place for a larger group dinner. More
