WHEN TO CHARTER IN ZADAR

The charter season in Zadar begins in April and lasts until November. The sailing conditions are exquisite, and the weather is excellent all year round. We recommend booking your yacht charter in Zadar at the end of June and first 2 weeks of July, so you can enjoy ideal weather conditions.

The most popular time for a yacht charter in Zadar region is during the summer months i.e. between June and September. Summer in this region means that you will be blessed with 13 hours of sunshine per day and temperatures between 25 and 30 C ° (77-86 Fahrenheit).

The Mediterranean climate promises a dry and warm summer with winds of no more than 10-20 knots. The peak season for sailors is July and August, with an insanely high number of sunny days and a great number of yachts on the water, while June, September, and October offer equally satisfying sailing conditions but fewer crowds.

For a truly tranquil yacht charter in Zadar, April, May, and November are ideal for exploring the 300+ islands, islets, and reefs. Thanks to the low boat traffic, the underwater world is at its peak during these months. You will have the opportunity to explore the region in all its glory, without the summer crowds. Imagine waking up on your yacht in a peaceful, pristine bay and seeing curious dolphins jumping around your boat.

The winds are particularly reliable during the yachting season when local yacht lovers claim they can set their watch by relying on their frequency. The mistral wind blows during the day, peaking between 9 am and 12 pm, then taking a break for a couple of hours before returning at 3 pm (“after lunch”) for a few more hours until dusk, when the winds die down to a light breeze.

Yacht Charter in Zadar air temperature graph

Zadar has mild winters and warm summers, but the temperatures are never too extreme. In the yacht charter season from May to September, conditions are practically perfect – the temperature is somewhere between 20 and 25 C °   (68-77 Fahrenheit) which means swimsuits, light clothes and bare feet are the order of the day.

The Adriatic is very well protected and enclosed, so temperatures never drop below 15 degrees, and the sea is swimmable all year round. By the end of May, swimming in the sea becomes pleasant and refreshing at around 20 degrees, and by the end of August, at 25 degrees, it feels like you are swimming in a pool.

This unique island got its nickname “the Moon Island” because its bare landscape reminds people of the surface of the moon, especially in the evening when the moon shines over the calm sea with a silvery haze.

The truth is, Pag is bare due to strong Bura winds from the north, although its moonlike appearance made Pag a perfect filming location for multiple TV shows like ‘The Terror’ , ‘Winnetou’, ‘Top Gear’ and many commercials for famous brands like Bugatti, Rimac and Audi.

Apart from UNESCO heritage treasures like Paška lace , Pag conceals another gem – the impressive Zrće beach , also known as the “Croatian Ibiza”, where you can moor your yacht at Club Noa and enjoy the beats from your yacht deck.

In the Zadar archipelago, there are numerous berths with a good mix of marina berths and free-swinging anchorages. Further south lays the marina Dalmacija in Sukošan – the largest marina in Croatia (located 7 km south of the historical town of Zadar) and the beautiful marina Biograd.

Marina Zadar (Tankerkomerc) – You can get to this marina quite easily from the airport, by taxi or a VIP transfer, arranged by the SuperYachts Croatia team. The journey from the airport to the marina takes less than 15 minutes, and there’s no real effort, except to sit back and enjoy a scenic ride through Zadar.

Tankerkomerc Marina Zadar has a total capacity of 300 wet berths and 200 dry berths, all of which are equipped with water, electricity and other amenities. It can accommodate yachts up to 45 m in length. Sea depth in the marina ranges from 8 to 12 m, and at the breakwater between 12 and 15 m.

Marina Zadar is located right in the city centre, which means that it is a very atmospheric place to stay, with many bars and restaurants nearby. The nearest supermarket is Konzum on the main road leading from the marina towards the bridge to the old town and should have everything you need.

This marina offers six floating pontoons with depths up to 6m and is equipped with a side finger pier mooring system. This marina is also equipped with freshwater outlets and a 220 V power bollard.

D-Marin Borik is located near the famous Sailing club Uskok, where you will find many sailors and professional skippers. Here you can also witness some regattas, such as the traditional regatta Zadarska Koka in October which is a delightful sight. Near the marina, you can enjoy the sandy beach Borik or the pebble beach Uskok.

D-Marin Dalmacija – the largest and most luxurious marina on the Croatian coast, located near the city of Zadar, with first-class facilities and top-notch gastro and hospitality services. This marina has a berthing capacity of 200 wet berths and 300 dry docks, and a capacity for superyachts up to 70m.

The marina is only 12 km from Zadar Airport, which has a direct connection to London, Manchester, Dublin, Glasgow, and many other European cities. This marina is open all year round, and it is located south of Zadar near Sukošan. There are enough berths to accommodate 1200 boats.

The marina has many facilities, including a reception, water and electricity connections, telephone connections, a small shop, a hotel, a casino, a yacht club, an indoor Olympic swimming pool, laundry, and dry-cleaning services, sports fields, medical services, and a charter fleet. The marina has a lift and is equipped for repairs as well as the many amenities and services you might need.

Telašćica Bay – anchor your superyacht in the extraordinary Telašćica bay, known as the largest, safest, and most beautiful Croatian harbour full of unspoiled nature. This paradise is located in the SE part of Dugi Otok and it offers protection from all winds. Due to its extreme beauty, it was declared a nature park in 1988.

Telašćica is popular amongst the yachts lovers for its calm emerald bays and pristine nature. This stunning bay is one of the most beautiful places in the Adriatic, filled with lush vegetation and majestic white cliffs.

Levrnaka Island – cruise with your yacht to the island Levrnaka, a place of truly remarkable beauty. This small island offers two anchorages – one on the north side and the other on the SW side. They offer good protection from north and south winds. The bay on the N side is deep and suitable for larger boats.

Exploring Zadar's Nautical Treasures: Specific Places to Visit with a Yacht

The allure of Zadar's coastline is not confined to the city's ancient walls or its sun-kissed shores. Beyond the horizon lies a world of islands, bays, and hidden coves, each a unique jewel waiting to be discovered. Renting a yacht in Zadar is akin to unlocking a treasure chest, offering access to some of the most breathtaking destinations in the Adriatic. Here are specific places that call out to the sailor's heart, promising enchantment, adventure, and a glimpse into the timeless beauty of the Croatian seascape.

🚢 Kornati National Park

An archipelago of over 140 islands, Kornati National Park is a paradise for sailors and nature enthusiasts alike. The stark contrast of rocky cliffs and crystal-clear waters offers a landscape that is both rugged and ethereal. Exploring the Kornati islands by yacht allows one to find secluded beaches, dive into underwater caves, and witness the vibrant marine life that thrives in these protected waters.

🚢 Dugi Otok

Dugi Otok, or "Long Island," is a destination that captures the essence of the Adriatic's tranquil beauty. The island is home to the stunning Telascica Nature Park, where pristine bays meet dense pine forests. Sailing to Dugi Otok's Sakarun Beach, one can indulge in the soft, white sands and turquoise waters, often compared to those of the Caribbean.

🚢 Ugljan Island

Known as the "green island," Ugljan is covered in olive groves, fig trees, and Mediterranean vegetation. A yacht excursion to Ugljan offers opportunities to explore charming villages, hike along scenic trails, and enjoy local gastronomy infused with the flavors of the sea.

🚢 Pag Island

The island of Pag is a world of contrasts, where barren landscapes meet rich cultural traditions. Famous for its lace-making, cheese, and unique moon-like terrain, Pag invites exploration both on land and sea. With a yacht, one can discover hidden coves and private beaches, each a silent witness to the island's centuries-old history.

🚢 Sestrunj Island

For those seeking solitude and a deep connection with nature, Sestrunj Island offers an escape from the modern world. With only a handful of inhabitants, the island retains an untouched beauty. Sailing to Sestrunj allows one to immerse in the tranquil waters, hike through wild landscapes, and gaze at the stars, unspoiled by artificial light.

🚢 Pasman Island

Located near Ugljan Island, Pasman is known for its dynamic currents and ever-changing sea colors. Its numerous pebble beaches and charming fishing villages create an ideal destination for a relaxed yachting adventure. A must-visit is the Franciscan monastery on Ćokovac hill, a historical site offering panoramic views of the surrounding archipelago.

🚢 Molat Island

Molat, with its serene bays and lush landscapes, offers an escape into tranquility. It is a place where time seems to slow down, where the melodies of nature take precedence over the noise of civilization. Exploring Molat by yacht provides a peaceful respite, an opportunity to connect with the elemental beauty of the Adriatic.

🚢 Silba Island

Known as the "pedestrian island," Silba is a car-free oasis that invites exploration on foot. Yachting to Silba provides access to untouched beaches and crystal-clear waters, ideal for swimming and snorkeling. The island's relaxed pace and artistic atmosphere make it a perfect destination for those seeking inspiration and renewal.

🚢 Vrgada Island

Vrgada is a small island characterized by sandy beaches and dense pine forests. It is a secluded paradise, ideal for those seeking privacy and communion with nature. Anchoring a yacht in one of Vrgada's sheltered coves allows one to enjoy sunsets and sunrises in perfect solitude, a romantic escape in the heart of the Adriatic.

🚢 Olib Island

A sparsely populated island, Olib is rich in history and natural beauty. The island is home to ancient olive groves, historic churches, and sandy beaches like Slatinica. Yachting to Olib offers a glimpse into a world untouched by mass tourism, a place where the echoes of the past still resonate in the wind and waves.

Though not an island, the town of Skradin is a unique destination accessible by yacht. It serves as the gateway to Krka National Park, home to stunning waterfalls and diverse wildlife. A journey to Skradin reveals the richness of Croatia's inland wonders, a blend of natural and cultural heritage.

The shores of Zadar are like the pages of an unending book, each destination a story waiting to be explored, each island a world unto itself. To rent a yacht in Zadar is to embark on an odyssey that transcends the ordinary, a voyage that delves into the heart of a landscape that has captivated sailors, poets, and dreamers for generations. What Should I Consider Before Renting a Yacht in Zadar

Yacht Rental Zadar

Renting a yacht is no small undertaking, especially in a place where the sea is a complex tapestry of currents, tides, and weather patterns.

⛵ Knowledge of the Waters

The waters of Zadar are both gentle and wild, calm and tempestuous. It is a landscape that demands respect and understanding. A potential mariner must be aware of the local maritime regulations, as well as the unique challenges posed by the Adriatic's tides and currents.

⛵ Type and Size of the Vessel

The decision to embark on this journey is not one to be taken lightly. The vessel chosen must be a harmonious match with the sailor's skills, the nature of the voyage, and the capricious personality of the sea itself. One must consider the size, the amenities, the strength, and the very soul of the yacht.

⛵ Environmental Responsibility

Zadar's sea is a living entity, filled with creatures that call it home. Renting a yacht in Zadar is a privilege that comes with responsibilities. Care must be taken to preserve the pristine beauty of the environment, to tread lightly, and leave no trace behind.

Which is the Best Yacht for Zadar Waters

There is no simple answer to this query, for the best yacht is a reflection of the sailor's own desires, needs, and understanding of the sea.

⛵ For the Adventurous Spirit

For those seeking the thrill of the open sea, a vessel that is both robust and agile is the key. Perhaps a sporty sailing yacht that can dance with the wind and weather the storm, offering an intimate connection with the ocean's many moods.

⛵ For the Seekers of Luxury and Comfort

Should one desire a voyage of leisure and indulgence, a motor yacht equipped with the finest amenities and luxuries might be the vessel of choice. The gentle hum of the engine, the spacious decks, the gourmet cuisine—all of these create a symphony of pleasure on the serene Adriatic waves.

⛵ For the Environmental Steward

In an age where the preservation of Nature's treasures is of paramount importance, an eco-friendly yacht might be the vessel for the conscious traveler. Advanced technologies that minimize pollution and promote sustainable navigation practices allow one to explore Zadar's waters with a clear conscience.

In the end, the best yacht for Zadar waters is the one that resonates with the sailor's heart, the one that becomes a faithful companion in an extraordinary voyage across time, culture, and the ever-mesmerizing dance of the sea. Whether for adventure, luxury, or conscious travel, Zadar's shores await, promising a journey that is as profound and enriching as the ancient city itself.

What type of boat is best for Zadar?

The type of boat you should for your Zadar boat rental will depend on the sort of holiday you want. If you only plan to sail for a few days, we’d recommend a daily rental, such as a motorboat or a RIB.

However, if you’re after a longer holiday of a week or more, we’d recommend a more spacious and comfortable vessel such as a catamaran. This boat is ideal for family holidays or a trip with a group of friends, and it comes fully equipped with all the necessary accommodations onboard, such as a kitchen, bathroom and cabins.

For a more traditional sailing experience, we’d recommend a sailboat rental however, you should always choose one with a skipper since these boats can be tricky to navigate. The best boat type depends on your group size and preferences.

Here is an average of the capacity for each boat type:

  • Capacity: 2 to 12 passengers.
  • Cabins: 0 to 3 cabins.
  • Capacity: 6 to 14 passengers.
  • Cabins: Typically open-decked without cabins.
  • Cabins: 1 to 4 cabins.
  • Capacity: 4 to 12 passengers or more.
  • Cabins: 2 to 6 cabins.

Consider group size, comfort, and planned activities when choosing the right boat type for your Zadar adventure.

6-day Sailing Itinerary from Zadar

There’s so much to see and so many places to visit from Zadar, that one week just isn’t long enough to see and visit them all. Most places you go, you’ll find unspoilt beaches, bays, cliffs and islands, along with idyllic little fishing and farming villages, so you can’t go too far wrong, even if you just follow your nose and decide spontaneously where to go.

Zadar - 6 day sailing itinerary

This route takes in a lot of the nearby islands and clocks in at 116 nautical miles – which works out at just under 20 nM a day. As you’ll likely be going at a pace of 5 knots or above, that means the sailing should only take 4-5 hours a day, which leaves plenty of time to go at a leisurely pace, to explore your start or end destinations in depth, or to take your time and bob into bays, swim on some beaches, practice man-overboard drills, or just relax.

As we’ll be spending a night in the Kornati marine national park, it’s worth buying an entry pass in advance (since the ticket inspectors will sting you for an extra 50%, and they patrol the islands every night). The unwritten rule is that you need a pass for every day that you’re in the national park after 4pm, so if you’re following our itinerary, a one day pass should suffice.

Ist

From Zadar, we’re heading in a north-westerly direction. You’ll pass lots of other charter yachts heading other directions, but we’re heading off the beaten track to a small farming village on the island of Ist. The prevailing wind is landward from the sea, so it should be a simple reach or broad reach to sail there.

Ist is an island of vines and olive groves, as well as sandy beaches, and it’s a quiet and tranquil place to spend the night, even though there are ferry connections to other islands. There’s a couple of bars and a church, but essentially this is a place to get away from it all and to enjoy life on the ocean waves.

Veli Iz

There are beaches on the south side of Molat, or you could pop into the town itself – which, oddly enough, was visited by King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson in 1939. But then we’re heading in a south-westerly direction, reaching against the prevailing wind as we follow the channels between the islands and to the east side of Iz.

Veli Iz is a small fishing village which also happens to have its own Roman fort and 14th century church. Founded by fishermen way back when, the village also has a number of decent seafood restaurants, and is famous for its decorative pottery (for which there is even a museum). Sadly, though there were 70 pottery companies on the island in bygone years, there is now only one left.

Zut

You certainly need to stock up because Zut is out in the wilderness. Situated in a sheltered bay which has been used by sailors for centuries, the tourist board built a pontoon and walkway in the bay in recent years to make it easier for sailors to get to shore, and to increase the number of jobs on the island by 1200% - from 1 to 12 people.

When you moor up you’ll find a couple of small shops and bars or eateries (don’t rely on them to be open, just in case, but they’re good if they are), and not much else. It’s a very peaceful bay to spend the night in, and a very unspoilt island to explore.

Piskera

There are beaches and bays to explore, and you’re allowed to walk on the islands if you dare to brave the heat. The view from the top of the hills is certainly quite special, but it can take a bit of effort to get there.

From Zut, we’re heading west (likely beating or close-hauled) to pass over the top of Kornati island - the biggest island in the national park – and following down it’s western coast in a south-easterly direction, probably in a broad reach against the prevailing summer wind. Enjoy weaving your way around the islands, finding beaches, bays and even bars on the largely unspoilt islands. You need to head slightly west to ensure that you hit the west coast of Piskera, but it is fairly straight-forward to find the well-sheltered marina and to moor up for the night.

Piskera is similar to Zut in that it is a marina which was built primarily to make the Kornati islands easier for sailors to explore, so you won’t find a town here – though you will find a restaurant, an over-priced shop (but heck, it’s in the middle of nowhere, so it can’t be easy to stock it up!) and modern toilet facilities. It should be another tranquil night, although the bar here can get quite lively if there are enough sailors in the marina.

Murter

Starting in a south-easterly direction until we reach the southern tip of Kornati island, we then need to bear north-easterly to traverse across the channel to Murter. This should be a simple run with the prevailing wind, and you might be able to get away with a broad reach, but bonus marks are available if you manage to goose-wing your way back towards the mainland.

Murter is the largest town on the island of Murter (which isn’t really an island any more, since the arrival of a road connection to the mainland). Surrounded by brilliant beaches, it’s also popular with land-lubbing tourists, and there’s plenty of lively bars and restaurants along the waterfront, which will make a change of atmosphere from Piskera and Zut.

The best beaches are on the west coast, and you could anchor up here if you had time, or, if you fancy some exercise, you could walk to the top of the hill (where there is world war two military base) and enjoy watching the sun set over the Kornati islands.

Milna

Working our way up the coast, we’ll sail past Biograd, which is one of the most popular charter bases in Europe, and the home to the biggest boat show in Croatia (check out our destination guide for Biograd if you want to find out more about it, but it’s not worth stopping there today as it will be busy with people returning their charter yachts).

Further up the channel is lovers island. This is the most perfect heart-shaped island in the world. It was only really ‘discovered’ after the invention of Google Earth, but it’s now a romantic destination in it’s own right, and hundreds of people come and propose here each year. It’s a romantic place to go, and it’s traditional to loop around the island (or make a heart shape on your plotter if you’re skilled enough) if you’re going past it, and throwing a euro into the waters around here is supposed to sort out your love life.

Follow the coast further north and you’ll arrive back at Sukosan (the biggest marina in Croatia) or Zadar marina. You should refuel your yacht or catamaran before returning the boat to roughly the same space you took her from on day one. Someone will come and inspect the boat, but you’ll still be sleeping on her tonight.

If you’ve not had chance to visit the old town of Zadar, then now is a good time to go and see the 3,000 year old UNESCO world heritage site. Most bars near both marina’s will be lively with happy sailors recounting their adventures to anyone who will listen tonight, and it’s the last night of the holiday for so many people that it shouldn’t be difficult to find a lively atmosphere.

Hopefully you’ve been impressed by the sun, sea, sailing and general tranquillity of the Croatian islands, hopefully your crew all got on well together (and maybe there was a holiday romance?), and hopefully you’ve had a brilliant, enjoyable and relaxing holiday. Have a safe trip home, and, when you start to miss the sea and the sunshine, remember to visit PlainSailing.com to start planning your next epic adventure!

Sailing Conditions

Croatia Sailing - Wind Conditions

The winds are particularly reliable throughout the sailing season, when local sailors claim that they can set their watch by them: there are Mistral winds during the day which peak between 9am and mid-day, then take a break for a couple of hours, before returning (“after lunch”) for another few hours at 3pm until dusk, when the winds die down to a light breeze, if anything at all.

The daytime winds are usually Force 4 or Force 5, and their prevailing direction is landward, which is driven by the sun – as the land warms up and the air above it rises during the day, air is sucked from the sea. A little further out from the coast, and away from the Mistral winds, then the winds shoots down the Adriatic channel into the heart of the Mediterranean.

Zadar - Average Temperature

We use three marinas in Zadar, each offering excellent and modern facilities, and great levels of care for our guests.

If you're staying in the area before or after your charter, we can recommend these places that are close to Marina Zadar and D-Marin Borik - Prestige design rooms or El mirador rooms - or these places next to Sukosan - Hotel Joso or White Residence .

Marina Zadar

Marina Zadar is based right in the centre of town, which means it’s quite an atmospheric place to spend the night, and there’s plenty of bars and restaurants. The marina also boasts its own casino!

Marina Zadar

Blogs about Sailing in Zadar

Marina dalmacija, sukosan.

Zadar yacht charter

Sailing holidays in Zadar …with catamaran, sailboat, motorboat, luxury yacht or gulet Abundance of national parks!!!

As part of the Adriatic culture, Zadar is no exception to the specific local lifestyle in which the love for good food plays an important role in everyday life. The local people are passionate about everything in their lives, but especially about gastronomy. They will gladly inform you their cuisine is among the best you will ever try. It is therefore inevitable to dive into the inviting mixture of enchanting aromas, waken your senses and enjoy some truly amazing dishes.

Zadar is proud of its Dalmatian heritage, visible in every aspect of their culture, including the local cuisine. Based on simple principles of food preparation, Dalmatian cuisine is considered to be among the healthiest in the world. The locals can thank than their vitality to light, predominantly cooked or grilled fish meals accompanied by the fresh seasonal vegetables with small amounts of spices and with a touch of inevitable olive oil. Every such meal is concluded by the glass of quality wine from the rich local vineyards.

As a modern tourist destination, Zadar has an immensely rich gastronomic offer, managing to satisfy even the most demanding of guests. From fast food objects, patisseries and trattorias over to praised local taverns and exclusive fine dining venues; you can find them all in Zadar. The majority of restaurants are conveniently incorporated into the romantic city architecture and situated in the immediate city center.

If you prefer to try something different and exotic, there are two restaurants serving dishes of the Far East; Pearl of Siam is a Thai restaurant and in the newly opened Shanghai House you can try some of the most recognizable Chinese specialties. One of the best fish restaurants are Niko and Fosa; if you’re into fine dining be sure not to miss Gourmet Kalelarga, Pet Bunara and Lungo Mare; and if you prefer to enjoy the true Dalmatian atmosphere while tasting the local specialties, visit one of the city taverns (e.g. Konoba Trata).

But, the majority of Zadar visitors are interested to try the local cuisine. We warmly recommend you explore the endless choices of fish specialties ranging from grilled fish, seafood risottos, fish stews, various delicious shrimps and clamshells. And if you are more of a “meat person”, don’t miss to taste pasticada, the traditional Dalmatian beef stew marinated in lemony vinaigrette, slowly cooked in wine and served with the homemade gnocchi.

There are several gastronomic delicacies typical for Zadar, designed through the centuries of foreign influences and local specificities of climate and available groceries. Be sure to try the cheese from the Island of Pag, one of the best cheeses in Croatia and winner of many international awards and acknowledgements. This cheese is best if accompanied by the aromatic prosciutto dried in the streams of bura, the strong local wind blowing from the mountain ridges. Encircle the exquisite tastes of the local delicacies with a glass of quality wine from the fertile vineyards of Zadar. And as a desert, try Maraschino, original sweet liqueur of Zadar made from the indigenous variety of cherry.

Zadar is a town that has antique origins with the most researched Roman forum on the eastern side of the Adriatic and late Roman church – the cathedral of St. Stošija [St. Anastasia], Sv. Krševan [St. Krsevan] and the famous Sv. Donat [St. Donatus]. With its valuable collections, libraries and archives, Zadar is proud of the fact that the foundations of the oldest Croatian university were laid here in 1396.

Recently made even more famous for its Sea Organ, an architectural miracle on the Zadar riva (sea front). Alfred Hitchcock was so impressed with Zadar and its sunset that he said that from the Zadar riva ‘one can enjoy the most beautiful sunset in the world. If you go to the nearby old town of Nin, you will find the smallest cathedral in the world – Crkva svetog Kriza (Church of the Holly Cross), that is only 36 paces long.

Attractive sailing destinations:

Dugi Otok is an island located close to Zadar on the mainland, and is the largest among the islands located in this part of Dalmatia. Its name literally means ‘long island’ – for it is indeed of this description (it is 45km long) – and is known for its vineyards and orchards, Saharun beach in the north, and Telascica Nature Park that covers the south part of the island. With a population of just 1,500 people on Dugi Otok, the main villages are Bozava and Sali.

Dugi Otok is a wonderful place to stay if you’re looking to get ‘off the beaten track’! Despite Croatia’s obviously popularity, even in the summer months this island well and truly provides travellers with some peace and quiet, although there are still some wonderful things to see and do here.

It is very easy to take a swim on Dugi otok as wherever you turn you’ll have fascinating clear, blue sea attracting you with its beauty. The hidden coves where you can find charming, untouched beaches, represent a challenge for researchers, but also to all those who want privacy and peace.

The beauty of Dugi otok, the beach Sakarun, will fascinate many with its beauty and satisfy those who want crystal-clear waters and white sand at their fingertips.

Sakarun, like many other coves on Dugi otok is a safe harbour for sailors, and thus makes Dugi otok an ideal place to find shelter from the powerful forces of sea and wind. Beaches on Sali are, for the most part, pleasantly calm, lacking the crowds of Croatia’s top beaches. You’ll find several pristine, quiet spots, like Lojisce Beach, in Telascica Nature Park.

At the other end of the island, a small beach on Veli Rat offers great views of Dugi Otok’s lighthouse. Standing 42 meters high, the lighthouse at Veli Rat is the tallest in the Adriatic. It was built in 1849, when, according to legend, 100,000 egg yolks were used to give the facade its unique yellow color. Today, the lighthouse provides accommodation for visitors seeking a romantic getaway.

Sakarun is the island’s most well known – and most crowded – beach. A sandy bottom and shallow waters make this calm cove popular among families, while a couple of beach bars cater to the younger crowd.

Ist Island is a small island whose shape resembles a butterfly. It is ideal for holidays in unspoiled nature away from the stress and bustle of cities. Car traffic is not allowed on the island so you can freely enjoy the peace of the island and fresh air.

Explore the island and take a walk through the vineyards and olive groves to the highest point of the island where you will find a small the church, a gazebo and enjoy in the panoramic view of the islands in the area. Discover sandy beaches and clear waters in quiet coves and relax in the shade of pine trees. It is interesting that during the day you can move from one side of the island to another and experience a different, perhaps more peaceful wind. Ist is a favorite destination for navigators, divers and fishermen. In addition to its beauty, its kitchen also attracts tourists. There are restaurants that serve dishes of freshly caught fish, crabs, mussels, wine and cheese.

The Island of Ist, with a town bearing the same name, is a true destination for a peaceful and quiet vacation. The waters around the island abound in fish; this being the reason it attracts many recreational fishermen, though the underwater world is no less interesting for divers. The peaceful island of Ist and its main settlement of the same name placed in a bay with a small marina are ideal for those who prefer quiet, somewhat secluded outdoor holidays. The island has barely 250 inhabitants.

There are hills, olive groves and vineyeards in its interior. Ist and the neighboring islands of Molat and Skarada, with their sandy beaches, bays and sandbanks are ideal for sports fishing, diving and nautical tourism. Anchorage is available in the Mljaka bay where guests are offered accommodation in private holiday houses.

Pasman is an island located in the Zadar archipelago, separated from the mainland by the beautiful Pasman canal which contains ten smaller islands. Pasman covers the surface of 60 km2 and has a 70km long, indented shore which is why it is considered one of the largest Croatian islands. There are eleven settlements on the island, the population of which is engaged in fishing and tourism. The sea current in this area changes every six hours, which makes the sea the cleanest in the entire Adriatic.

Pasman is famous for its beautiful beaches and pine tree forests. The north side of the island is the only one populated, while the settlements are small and typically Mediterranean, ideal for a quiet and relaxing vacation. The south side of the island abounds in beautiful intact nature, beautiful coves and old fishermen houses overlooking one of the most beautiful group of islands in the Adriatic – Kornati.

The population of the island of Pasman is traditionally engaged in agriculture, fishing and, more recently, tourism. Recreation enthusiasts can enjoy on the footpaths and biking trails; we also recommend the hiking-biking tour to the hill of Veli Bokolj which offers the view of neighboring islands, the Pasman canal and the Kornati.

The most important island center is Tkon, which is developing faster than any other settlement on the island because of its large harbor and quality connection to the mainland. The population calls this place “Kun”, but is also known as the “Door to Kornati”. Kraj is a beautiful place surrounded by vineyards and olive groves which stretches along two beautiful sandy beaches. It holds the gothic Franciscan monastery of St. Dujam from the 14th century with the image of the Madonna with baby Jesus from the 15th century, as well as the exponents’ museum which reveals the history of the island of Pasman.

Vrgada is a small Adriatic island, surrounded by much larger isles such as Pasman, Kornati and Murter. Being less than 2.5 km² in size, and having a scarce population of 250 inhabitants, it’s a great spot for visitors seeking peace and an easy-going vacation.

Vrgada is full of wild plantlife, which can be used for stews, spices or even medical treatments. The local beach of Janica is known for huge blocks of stone, found on the bottom of its sea, which are actually the remains of Dijana, an archaic harbor of the classical period.

Other points of interest include pusevbrus, a stone attached to one’s house which was used for sharpening the agricultural tools of villagers. The local church is a home to statue of St. Andrew, patron saint of fisherman. Interestingly, the statue was brought to Vrgada’s shores by sea waves, and nobody really knows who made it and how it ended up in Adriatic.

Another small place for an interesting holiday, Vrgada might be just the kind of island you seek to rest your nerves and experience true tranquility.

The island of Vir is located 26 km from Zadar and it is connected to mainland by a bridge which makes it easy accessible because it is not tied with ferry lines. The largest settlement on the island of Vir is located in the bay Sapavac. It was first mentioned in 1069 in the document of King Petar Kresimir called Ueru i.e. Vera, meaning pasture. Along the coast, in the bay Sapavac, you can see the remains of the fortress Kaštelina from 17th century which was built by the Venetians in order to protect themselves from Turkish attacks. Only one wall and two towers are preserved from the entire fort. The arms of the Venetian family and a winged lion that was the symbol of Venice are visible on the tower.

The island is ideal for families because it is surrounded by coves with sandy and pebble beaches and clear sea. Along the beaches you can see pine trees so you can relax in the shade. Besides swimming and diving, you can try water sports and sail, surf, ride a jet ski or simply explore the island on foot. The area is ideal for mountain biking. In summer the wind is blowing, which relieves summer heat and creates perfect conditions for surfing and windsurfing. On some beaches on Vir, especially in the bay n Sapavac ear the fort Kaštelina, you can find medicinal mud (peloid mud) which is good for the treatment of rheumatic diseases.

On the island you can taste the local cuisine in the restaurants and taverns, and nightlife can be found in bars, some of which are open until late at night. Every year Vir traditionally organizes ‘’Vir summer’’, cultural and musical event, which lasts from June to September. Among the other events Dalmatian ‘’klapa’’ singing and Days of the island of Vir are organized.

The island has great location because you can go on a trip to the countryside and visit the National Park Plitvice lakes, Krka waterfalls, or Kornati.

Murter is a small place situated on the north-western part of the eponymous island which is connected to the mainland by a mobile bridge. The town was formerly known as Veliko Selo and Srimac. It received its current name in 1715. History lovers can visit the remains of the roman buildings (remains of an ancient settlement Colentum) located at the foot of the Gradina hill, as well as the church of Our Lady in Gradina and the parish church of St. Mihovil.

This town is surrounded by numerous islands and part of them create the beautiful National park – Kornati. Be sure to visit this breathtaking national park. You can cruise around the Kornati labyrinth, dive or snorkle, observe the flora and fauna, explore the amazing islands or try to live among Kornat families. Murter is rich with sandy beaches, such as Slanica, Cigrada, Podvrske and many others. During the summer, you can attend classical and fun music concerts and enjoy local church singing. This is a place which has a rich tourist offer, in which everyone can find something to their liking. Gastronomy enthusiasts can savor the delicacies of the island in the restaurants “Skalinda” and “Runje”, as well as in the tavern “Balarina”.

Although relatively small, Island Murter boasts a rich variety of picturesque coves and beaches dotted along its coast. Island Murter may actually be considered as one long beach, which transforms as you circumnavigate the island from the peaceful, isolated, private, nudist beaches to the more lively, fun-filled beaches resonating to the frantic red-hot pace of summer. Whether you choose to unwind in the peaceful isolated bays or search for a party, one thing is for sure – you have chosen your place in the sun.

Yacht Charter in Zadar – In the footsteps of the conqueror

Board a yacht charter in Zadar and dive deep into history: The city of Zadar in the heart of Dalmatia looks back on equally rich and eventful history – the conquerors gave themselves the jack in hand, the city had been destroyed and rebuilt several times. After the Illyrian domination, the city became the first Roman stronghold on the Dalmatian coast in the 2nd century BC. This was followed by Frankish and Byzantine rulers before Zadar came under the protection of the Venetians – the same Venetians who Zadar then besieged about 200 years later! Even to this day, ruins are testament to the different eras: the Roman Forum, for example, or the church of St. Donat from the 9th century. Several palaces date back as buildings from the Venetian period.

A yacht charter in Zadar makes the story alive

Today, more than 3,000 year-old city with its approximately 75,000 inhabitants perfectly combines tradition with modernity: ancient ruins, medieval city walls, historic villas and churches on the one hand and lively squares full of restaurants, cafes and bars on the other make Zadar one of the most popular tourist destinations in Croatia. The marketplace is a real crowd-pleaser – here you will find fruit, vegetables and fresh fish, and the restaurants still offer traditional dishes. There’s also a beautiful anachronism: The shops close between 2 and 5 p.m! Particularly popular among tourists is the 2005 landmark called the Sea organ on the waterfront which generates music by the motion of the waves. With yacht charter, attractions galore!

Yacht Charter: Zadar as sailing region!

Whether you rent a motorboat in or catamaran: A yacht charter in Zadar is the key in a paradise for sailors and motorboat enthusiasts. The larger islands of Pašman, Dugi Otok or Ugljan are well worth a trip as is the Kornati National Park with its many small karstic islands and reefs. Also, the Krka National Park and the Telascica Nature Park are easily accessible by charter.

Young and old alike will love the sea organ that plays notes as the waves lap at the promenade steps, and the funky, 25 metre seafront solar powered seafront dance floor gives light shows every nightfall.

People have lived in Zadar for many thousands of years. The Romans were relative late comers, even as they left behind the Roman Forum that dates back to 1BC. Some of the blocks originally used in it were used to build the nearby 9th Century Church of St Donat.

Zadar isn't stuck in the past though. Wine lovers will appreciate its 3,000 year old wine making tradition and fine dining to be had in different parts of the city. Wine imbibers will also find plenty of places to enjoy an all nighter, with some of the best DJs in the world playing at its nightclubs.

What about the white sand beach at Saharun? This is one of Croatia's best beaches bar none with shallow, clean seas that will please all tastes.

The Old Town is where it's at - and in summer hardly ever sleeps from an early morning coffee jolt to long lunches, world renowned sunsets and partying on through to dawn. But if you do want to do a Croatia yacht charter, right, there are two well equipped marinas in Zadar and the biggest one in Croatia is just 8km down the road in Sukosan, capable of taking even the biggest of luxury yacht.

Explore Zadar By Renting A Yacht

For those on a Zadar yacht charter you're in the right place too. Zadar Airport is a short bus ride or taxi away and several yacht charter companies operate charter yachts out of its marinas.

The Zadar region's central location on the Adriatic Coast offers you the yacht charterer a wide range of options.

You could spend the week of your boat rental bingeing on national parks such as those at Kornati, Krka and even Mljet. Also to consider is the Dragon's Eye sea lake in Rogoznica or Lake Vrana national park too.

You can also visit Sibenik (Croatia's oldest city) and even at a stretch, the beautiful old town of Trogir further down the Dalmatian coast. To the north on the Istria Peninsula is Opatija - a true jewel on the AdriaticSea.

If island hopping is your thing then you're utterly spoiled out of the Zadar area. Just across the Pasman Straits are the Zadar Archipelago, while to the north you can head for the Kvarner Archipelago. To the south there's the Sibenik Archipelago and even at a stretch the Dalmatian Islands.

As ever you can get a mix on a sailing holiday out of Zadar. The odd long night out, a day in the hills and an afternoon visiting historic buildings. Long lunches in shade from the baking heat, whether on a gulet or a bareboat charter sailing vacation the choice is down to you.

How To Get To Zadar

Zadar Airport

Zadar has an international airport that is served by a number of European airlines throughout the summer. There is a shuttle bus from the airport or you can get a taxi to the marina.

Suggested Sailing Routes From Zadar

In North Dalmatia and pretty much at the centre of nautical tourism in Croatia, you have a wide array of itineraries to choose from on your sailing yacht charter. Here are two seven day routes and a 14 day route.

7 days southern circuit - Dalmatian coastn and islands: Your outward leg can take in the Dalmatian coastal towns of Biograd, Sibenik, the island of Murter and then Rogoznica before heading out and island hopping via the Kornatinational park and back across the Sibenik Archipelago to Pasman Island before returning back to home port.

7 days - Kvarner archipelago: Heading on a northerly outward leg you can cross the Pasman Strait and out to the famous Kornati Island national park before island hopping out of Zadar County as far as Krk and Cres in the Northern Croatia. Returning, do visit Starigrad before passing under the famous arch of the Pag Bridge back towards Zadar and the Virski Most bridge to home port.

14 days - Trogir and the Dalmatian Islands: Here you have an opportunity to coastal hop down Dalmatia, taking in the national parks of Krka and Mljet (pausing in Sibenik on the way) before arriving in historic towns of Trogir or Split. Head west to the party island of Hvar and then island hop north via the Sibenik archipelago and Kornati islands. Explore the Zadar islands before heading back to the home port.

Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Zadar

The sailing season runs from late April to October with July and August being the busiest months for yacht charter. The ACI Marina chain also adds 20% to their berthing fees at this time of year. The climate is mild most of the sailing season with occasional rain showers.

Sailing Weather In Zadar

April and May: There will be occasional rainy days but temperatures sit between 22-28C or higher. Winds are generally NW, 10-20 knots

June-August: You'll be unlucky if you see any rain, though it could be welcome in the summer heat! Temperatures are from 26C and up to the mid 30s. Wind is generally NW 5-10 knots

September-October: In this part of the world it rains more in October and the temperature falls away to 10 degrees C in the evenings, though it can get up to a comfortable 20C on an autumn day. Winds can get up to 20 knots.

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

The smallest in Zadar is D-Marin Borik that can take 175 boats. The main one in the city itself is the Port of Zadar that has up to 500 berths. With 1,200 berths, the nearby D-Marin Dalmacija in Sukosan is just 8km from Zadar itself.

July and August are the peak season with many marinas charging significantly more for berths. It could pay to go in quieter times - school termtime for example is when you will find Zadar quieter but nonetheless entrancing. The weather is good in September and May too!

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat hire before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

We are confident that our prices are the most competitive and transparent in the market.

We won't charge any booking fees when you make a booking with us.

We have the highest number of verified and vetted boats available on the market.

Yacht Charter Zadar

Zadar - a city of less than 80,000 inhabitants, is mainly influenced by Venetian and Roman influences. The construction of the city and walls of Zadar testify that.

The historic city center is fully restored and offers a beautiful setting for an evening stroll at the end of a sailing trip.

By the end of the 19th century Zadar served as a fortress to the Venetians. It is located on a narrow peninsula on the Adriatic sea and is separated from the mainland by a moat. As the capital city of northern Dalmatia, Zadar is an ideal base for your yacht charter. The arrival is quick and easy, it is connected by the European Route 65 and the Highway 1.

The Zadar archipelago, with Ugljan, Pasman, Dugi Otok, Iz and the Kornati National Park with its 147 islands, makes Zadar ideal for a nice cruise. The driving to Zadar (even at night) is absolutely not a problem.

Zadar was a settlement already in the Illyrian times. The Romans called it Iader (Iadera), and Konstantinos Porphyrogennetos mentioned it in the 10th century as Diadora.

In the 2nd Century BC, the Romans conquered the city, built a capitol, fortifications, baths and an aqueduct. After 59 BC Zadar became a Roman Municipium, from 48 BC it is a colony of Roman citizens. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire Zadar became the capital of the Byzantine province of Dalmatia. From then on, the ruler of the city changed: firstly the Franks, and then in the 9th century Byzantine. After the plundering by pirates Zadar went 1000 under the protection of Venice and was ceded by the Byzantine emperor Alexius I formally.

In the 10th and especially in the 11th century Croatian rulers have held the actual control of the city. Zadar was the first time in 1069 under King Petar Kresimir IV to Croatia. In 1102 came Croatia, which also means Zadar with an agreement (pacta conventa) into a personal union with Hungary. From the early 12th century Zadar was attacked several times by the Republic of Venice. In 1118 hosts of the Hungarian-Croatian king Stephen II won over the Venetians and Ordelafo Faliero, the Doge of Venice, was killed outside the town. In 1202 Zadar was firstly under siege and eventually conquered by the Venetians with the help of the French Crusader army.

History Zadar

The Venetian and Croatian-Hungarian rule changed now. After several insurrections, Zadar came under the possession of the Hungarian-Croatian king Louis I (Treaty of Zadar in 1358). After his death, ruled king Sigismund, then Ladislas of Naples. He sold in 1409 Zadar and his rights on Dalmatia to Venice for 100,000 ducats.

Tha securing of the city began, because the Venetians took over the political and economic protection of the city. When the Ottomans conquered the hinterland in the early 16th century, the town became a strong fortification, that secured the Venetian trade in the Adriatic, as well as the administrative center for the Venetian possessions in Dalmatia. Zadar was the capital of the Venetian province double Dalmazia e Albania until 1797.

After the fall of Venice in 1797 Zadar came to Austria. The city then ceded in 1805 to France. During the French domination in Zadar, the first newspaper in the Croatian language, the Kraljski Dalmatin (1806-1810) was published.

In December 1813 Zadar came after a six-day bombardment after capitulation again to Austria, in whose possession it remained until 1918. It was the capital of the Kingdom of Dalmatia, which was one of the Austrian crown lands. In the second half of the 19th century Zadar was a center of Croatian cultural and national revival in Dalmatia, which actually represented a first-time nation-building. From 1838 appeared the Srpsko-dalamatinski magazine and from 1844 the literary magazine Zora dalmatinska. From 1862, the newspaper Il Nazionale was published twice a week, and once a week with the supplement PRILOG k Narodnom listu in Croatian. These were the newspaper of the Narodnjaci (English: the National), who wanted the Kingdom of Dalmatia to add Croatia and Slavonia. In the same year Matica dalmatinska was formed in Zadar, a Slavic cultural organization, after the model of Matica srpska and Matica Hrvatska. In 1863 Slavjanska čitaonica was opened in the city, a reading room, which was also the venue for Narodnjaci in the Dalmatian parliament (sabor).

Zadar was a garrison town of k.u.k Army until the First World War. In 1914 the I. and III. Battalion of the Militia Infantry Regiment N.23 was stationed here. Zadar fell through the Border Treaty of Rapallo (1920) to Italy after World War I. During World War II, the coastal town was the target of heavy air raids, which caused severe damage to the historic sites. The city was part of the Republic of Croatia within Yugoslavia in 1945/47. The largely Italian-speaking population then left almost completely the city and went to Italy (see Foibe massacre). Since 1991, Zadar is part of the independent Republic of Croatia, and is becoming one of the main Adriatic seaports.

Zadar, located on a narrow peninsula on the Adriatic Sea and the Zadar Channel, is separated from the mainland by a moat. Zadar was a fortress until 1873. The city has a large port, four gates (including the Port Gate with a Roman triumphal arch and was built after the design of Sanmicheli’s Porta di Terraferma) and consists of four districts. The majority of the old town is in Venetian architectural style. Places worth to mention are the Lord's Square (Piazza dei Signori) and Gradska Straza (including the Public Library), and the fountain square with ancient Corinthian column. Such can also be found on the Simeon square.
