New Spring Menus

Spring saw the launch of a revised breakfast & lunch menu and a completely new dinner menu at The Dunes Cafe & Bar. Launched with a VIP event for members and residents the seasonal menu has been tailored in response to direct feedback following recent research (focus groups) conducted by Pacific Dunes.

With a varied selection of vegetarian and tasty meat dishes, an abundance of gluten free options, revised kids choices accompanied by daily specials, the new menus are proving popular for each meal period and also for local businesses ordering take-away.

Head Chef, Sheldon Black, designed the menu with the patrons in mind and the recent research conducted on dining-out habits of members, residents and the wider community, but he also created each dish to draw on local, seasonal produce for the high level of quality and to support the local economy.

With all of the meat & seafood being sourced from within Australia, specifically the Hunter Valley for the scotch and rump steaks, it is also worth a mention that the calamari is line caught, the lamb is 100% free range & hormone free and similarly, the pork (for the pork belly) is hormone free.

Sheldon Black grew up in Montana where his family owned and ran St. Mary Lodge and Resort which is situated on land directly surrounding the east side entrance to Glacier National Park, which is listed among the “Top 50” most-visited tourist spots in the United States. Sheldon ventured to Australia through the wine industry, working at Arrowfield Estate before establishing himself in the Port Stephens & Newcastle Area as Head Chef at the following renowned restaurants: Shoal Bay Country Club, Grille32, Coronas Bar and Grille, Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club, Merewether Surf House.

Voted 2014 Port Stephens Business of the Year and 2014 Port Stephens Club of the Year, Pacific Dunes has once again been nominated as a Finalist in the 2015 Port Stephens Business Awards, for both the ‘Club’ category and ‘Restaurant-Australian Cuisine’ category, with the winners announced in October at the annual awards night.

Serving breakfast & lunch 7 days a week and dinner on Friday nights, The Dunes Cafe & Bar will be opening on Saturdays as well, in the near future.

Harrison operated fine dining restaurant Nor East on the wharf next to The Brewery for four years and, after stints in the kitchen at Bar Petite, The Albion and Bistro Lowlands, is returning to his passion for cooking seafood at Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club in Wickham.

Harrison, who trained as a chef under Robert Molines in the Hunter Valley, took over the space in August and has reunited with head chef Darryl Popp, who worked alongside him at Nor East on Queens Wharf.

"I'd had Lowlands for five years, so it was time for a change," Harrison told Food and Wine.

The focus of the menu is seafood, with a rotating specials board of six to eight dishes each week.

"I love cooking seafood. It's something I am truly passionate about," Harrison said.

"This is one of the most gorgeous spots in Newcastle, so I really needed the food to match it. We're trying to position it not as fine dining, but as an upmarket bistro. It's somewhere you can still count on getting fish and chips, but you can also have market fresh amazing seafood."

Read more: Nor East at the Newcastle Yacht Club: Dining Review

As well as the main menu, Nor East Bistro offers starters and share plates, such as king prawn bruschetta and Harrison's signature chicken live pate with quince jam, pickles and sourdough. The charcuterie board is popular on weekends with customers who sit on the lawn looking out across the marina with a bottle of wine to share.

Nor East Bistro is open seven days for lunch and dinner, and serves breakfast on weekends. The breakfast menu includes options such as scrambled eggs with shaved sugar-cured kingfish.

"That one is something a bit different and it's really nice. We are also using really good local bread from the bakery across the road [Baked Uprising]," Harrison said.

A street food menu runs every Sunday afternoon to coincide with the club's live entertainment.

"It's a more relaxed and informal menu to match with the live music," Harrison said.

"We offer things like tacos, or we might put a curry on. It's a cool place to hang out on a Sunday afternoon and have a share menu with a group. There are vegetarian options and our specials board has a big focus on gluten-free as well."

Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club

Ratings and reviews, food and ambience, location and contact.

Go here December each year to celebrate a birthday and Christmas combined, have been for many years. This time I guess due to Covid 19 the atmosphere and changes were a great disappointment. One god thing was that the tables were suitable distances apart. The... table service to take our orders was slow and we waited a long time. Then the requested information on the menu wasn't explained clearly enough by the person taking our orders . Then it took a LONG time to come out. When mine did it wasn't what I expected , one small piece of grilled fish and 2 uncooked stalks of broccoli and very expensive when we got the bill! We are now looking for a new venue for our next get-together. More

We haven’t been here for a few years. Friends told us about the renovations so we decided to try it. We booked online given a couple of options for times that were just too early for a Saturday night dinner for two. We chose the... adult time of 7pm. Arrived 6.45pm were seated and told at great length hot to either go to bar to place orders or use the QR code device for table service. We work long hours and enjoy table service when we dine out on the weekend. It’s our wind down time together to unpack the week, relax and talk. Using the QR device is a new thing and understand it’s a cost saving measure and contactless for Covid. However, DIY is not appreciated at these prices for a meal. We enjoyed a cocktail and then ordered an $80 bottle of wine to enjoy with our meal. Entrees then ordered and enjoyed. At 8.04pm we once again logged into the QR device to order our mains…nothing available! Upon enquiring why, we were told the kitchen closes at 8pm. Ok but who told us? Nobody! Not one mention on arrival, upon being seated and explained at length about how to order. Very disappointing. A simple message on the menu wouldn’t go astray. Whilst we did enjoy our entree we then moved on elsewhere for our main meal as it was our Saturday night dinner for two NOT just entree for two. Prices of meals equivalent to fine dining and way too high for the lack of atmosphere and DIY table service. Please add a pop up into your online booking AND a note on the menu AND for good measure tell your team to advise a 7pm diner that the kitchen closes at 8pm. More

We took our friends from Sydney here as we have always enjoyed the large offering of seafood on offer. We arrived at 6 pm and sat outside to have a drink at a table. At 6.40pm we headed inside to order and were told the... restaurant was fully booked out and that we could not sit outside to eat. This seemed strange to me as we had eaten outside before. I then asked whether we could sit at one of the many high tables inside that had table numbers but no reservation sign. I was told we could only order off the bar menu. None of this made sense to me so I questioned this. Thankfully the woman could see how absurd the situation was and allowed us to order off the main menu and sit at one of the many high tables available. The next problem was the menu. Given the restaurant is a yacht club and situated on a marina and next door to a fish Co-op one would expect a large range of seafood on offer. This is no longer the case. The mp fish was salmon - very disappointing since it is the most common fish available and the only other fish on offer was battered fish. This restaurant use to offer specials offering whole snapper etc but we have not seen this in a very long time. Very disappointed in the lack of seafood now offered at this restaurant. The pan fried salmon comes with boiled potatoes and broccoli. While substantial, I could cook this at home myself. My husband ordered the fish burger which he said was good but only ordered it because of the limited options. More

Having read the review in the local paper we were keen to give this restaurant another go. Have been dining at the Yacht Club for years because we love the venue but yet again the food has let us down. Very few gluten-free options for... my coeliac husband and his inquiry was met with "he can have the steak." He opted for two entrees and despite explaining to staff one was to be a main, they came at the same time around half an hour after we had ordered. The prawn bruschetta was ok, and the salt and pepper squid tasty but way more batter than I had expected from the menu. Our friend had a steak which he said was chewy and not cooked to his medium/well done preference. Sadly won't be rushing back here and wouldn't recommend at all. More

We had visited the NCYC twice in the past and had thoroughly enjoyed the fresh selection of seafood, along with the normal classics and decided to go again for a family lunch to celebrate my daughters 21st. We weren't aware of the renovations and were... pleasantly surprised upon walking in. Upon arrival in the dining area, we were advised that we had to place our orders for food as a whole and to come up to the register all together, there was 16 of us in total. After being there some 10/15 minutes, Maria came over and advised us again that we need to place our orders as a group and to come and do it soon because we had already been there for a while. Prior to Maria coming over to our table, I had already placed an order for bread's/entree's for the whole table and I mentioned to the staff that we were waiting on the rest of our party to arrive and we would then place our orders. Upon returing to the table I also advised Maria that as we were still waiting on some of our party to arrive, once they did we would make out way up as a group to place our Order(s). When we were ready we went up to the register where we were advised by Maria that she could only take 6 orders at a time, because apparently that was the Chef's limit? A bit contradictory to our previous instructions, but we did what was instructed. When the food did come out, it did not come out in order as placed, one particular dish being the trout salad came out and was slammed onto the table by itself and this was some 15 minutes after all the other food had been delivered to our table and this order was one of the first one's placed? I personally ordered the prawn and chorizo linguine which was tasteless and it was actually spaghetti not linguine, with big pieces of half cooked garlic in it and 1/2 small quarter slices of chorizo. I could of and do make better at home! The only people that were happy with their meals are the ones that ordered from the 'Classic's menu' and had fish and chips or a burger. Unless I hear contrary to our experience, we will not be bothering with the NCYC again for a meal. More

Spent a lovely pre Xmas lunch at the yacht club restaurant 3 days before Christmas with daughter & grandson. We sat outside on a cooler day after a heatwave, so enjoyed the view of the Harbour as well as the food. First visit for me... & was very impressed with the extensive menu & good service. Had to have seafood, so the prawn pasta dish hit the spot, as well as the desserts as you'll see from the photo. Good size servings too, so very good value overall. I would highly recommend it for groups & families or even special occasions. I will return. More

Sadly I thought that with the reopening there would be a change in the manner of staff. Unfortunately still rude to guests. I was walking to the counter to order oysters and was stopped by the woman in charge to be told because I didn’t... have a dining booking that I couldn’t order until after 2.30. It was 2.20 and kitchen was not busy and no one waiting to order. Simply rude even though I told her we were sitting in the bar area and only wanted oysters. Staff seem to be afraid of her also which I find sad. Who would want to work in fear of doing the wrong thing like actually being helpful to customers. More

Firstly, the renovations were really good. Such an improvement and much better use of the space. Unfortunately the food was a disappointment. The menu had not changed much in 12 months and there was still not suitable light lunch options apart from the starters. There... was a falafel salad but it would have been nice to see a warm chicken or roast veg salad option. Not everyone feels like eating a huge main meal for lunch or feels like paying over $30. We were told the chicken wrap was very spicey but my husband could not taste any heat. My battered fish was disappointing as the batter was very thick so I had to take it off. It is such a shame when you have the best outlook but word is out about the food. We thought we'd give it another go. Sorry we won't be back for a while until you decide to cater to more than a few 'boaties'. More

We visited for dinner on the 2nd night they were allowed to open due to COVID19 and had limited menu and dining times. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The food was very yummy. Firstly arriving with complimentary soup, then entree and mains which... you will see from my pictures. The food was delicious, exactly what I expected from a Club. The location is perfect, can’t wait to see the view at lunch time. Will be back. More

Never been there before so decided to go for dinner. Very limited dinner menu. As I could not eat spices of any sort, selected the slow cooked scotch fillet. When it was served, the outside was cooked but the middle was bleeding raw. Told the... waitress could not eat it could the chef cook it a bit longer, The chef was adamant he was not going to do it. Not a very pleasant chef. Ended telling the duty manager my grievance, unfortunately he met the same NO as me. It was either my money back or another meal, I chose the latter. Also, don’t be fooled about happy hour as it is only available to club members. Was told membership cost $100+ More

I cannot praise this establishment enough! We held a farewell lunch in The Bridge Room 22.10.23 Everyone of our guests said how impressed they were with both the venue and the food. Both of which was truly outstanding. Big shout out to both Rebbeca events... manager for her amazing organising skills and Linda who ran the bar served lunch ( assisted by Rebbeca) served coffee and always at hand, smiling and so helpful throughout the whole day. More

This was our 1st time visiting the restaurant and I'm pretty sure the last. Although the service was OK, the food leaves a lot to be desired. We asked what was the fish of the day, was told swordfish, two of us ordered it, but... what was served was some other fish not well cooked. Also was served with cold brocolini (which I do don't understand why cold) and some boiled potatoes also like warm... We also ordered a cheese plater which the cheeses were ok but was served with burnt bread... This is a restaurant with prices on the higher side, we expected better quality. More

I keep going back to this place because I want it to be good but I always come away disappointed. This week four of us had lunch and three of us ordered the seafood mornay pie. What a disaster - minimal seafood, really gluggy mornay... and the side salad was over-dressed and looked as if it had stewed in the dressing for several hours. The fourth person had the spaghetti marinara and it wasn’t great either. More

We were overnighting at the CYC marina and arrived late in the afternoon to pick up a boat so it was convenient to eat at the CYC club. The club has a friendly, casual atmosphere and a typical club-like menu where schnitzels, beer-battered fish, and... burgers feature. One thing that was missing was a steak option. A few of us would have chosen this if it had been on offer. I had the chicken parmigiana which was a generous size and was tender and juicy. It came with chips and a bland purple coleslaw salad. Others had the yellow fish curry from the specials board and seemed very happy with it. Prices were reasonable and were mostly between $25 - $32 for the mains. The best feature of the club is the outlook over the marina and the luxury boats. Overall, the food was OK and it’s very convenient if you are already at the marina but if you're not, I wouldn’t go out of my way to go here. More

newcastle cruising yacht club lunch menu

Visited last week and the food was sensational. The menu is varied with another 6-7 specials. Everything was fresh and prepared with care. The scallops with crab and prawn mornay were a stand out. The food was amazing. The staff super friendly and helpful. A... great place to visit, not to mention that spectacular view. Well done. Well definitely be back! More

HARBOURSIDE DINING: Luke Carpenter delights at Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club

Nautica dining – 95 hannell st, wickham nsw 2293.

by Newcastle Live 15 December 2021, 3:00 pm

Executive chef, Luke Carpenter brought his pursuit of dining excellence to Nautica Dining at the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club this year, and now a seat at the harbourside venue is one of the hottest tickets in town.

Luke first moved to Australia when he was 21. He worked in Sydney before moving to the United Kingdom where he took positions in places like Scotland’s Skibo Castle and Midsummer House in Cambridge which went from one Michelin star to two during Luke’s time.

When he returned to Australia he took a position as the executive chef at Peppers Clearwater and turned it into an award-winning venue before moving to the Anchorage in Port Stephens where he was awarded a Chef’s Hat by the Australian Good Food Guide .

newcastle cruising yacht club lunch menu

Luke has designed a diverse menu for Nautica Dining which focuses on in-season Australian produce and includes some amazing fresh Australian seafood.

Highlights of the menu include a pan-roasted Daintree barramundi and the Bass Strait grass-fed beef ribeye served with black garlic butter.

And while Luke is focused on providing a bistro experience with some amazing food for the club, he also looks forward to offering bespoke degustation options for people who are looking for a themed dining experience with matching wines.

You can find Nautica Dining inside the clubhouse at Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club at 95 Hannell Street in Wickham. Visit ncyc.net.au for more information

Voted the 2019 Australian Sailing Club of the Year, the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club (NCYC) is universally recognised as a welcoming haven catering for a diverse community of cruising, sailing, racing and social activities.

It has previously hosted the prestigious Australian IRC Championships and NSW Country Yachting Championship. In addition, it provides organisational expertise and resources to the annual Sail Port Stephens, NSW’s fastest-growing regatta over the past 13 years.

Located at 95 Hannell St, Wickham NSW 2293, the Club was incorporated in April 1994 and underwent various phases of development, beginning with the completion of four marina arms, boatyard, and commercial centre. The second phase, in 2008, saw the addition of two more marina arms and a clubhouse.

NCYC’s marina comprises 180 berths, all with power and water, a 24hr self-service fuel wharf dispensing diesel and unleaded petrol, and an effluent pump-out facility. The privately operated Midcoast Marine boatyard is equipped with a 40-tonne travel lift, a concrete hard-stand area, and an indoor maintenance area and paint shop.

Following the opening of its Stage 3 harbourfront development, the club now has facilities to rival the best in Australia in terms of size and style,.

With the building doubled in overall size, bar, dining and lounge space has actually tripled as the new upper storey is available for members and guests rather than being dedicated to corporate offices.

It allows the club to host anything from intimate weddings and functions, right up to gala dinners and corporate events catering for 300 people. There is also a newly opened Nautica Dining restaurant, offering high-class a la carte meals and bar classics.

It’s one of the biggest and best all-weather club spaces you’ll find, especially right on the waterfront.

Included in the development was an all-new kitchen, which is centrally located in the lower, open-plan bar and dining area.

The area formerly occupied by the kitchen is now the Foredeck room, with high bar tables and glass doors that flood the area with light and air. To cater for functions, it can be enclosed. The bar has new café-style tables, flowing into a relaxed, sunlit drinking space, then the new Regatta Room dining area. Full-width glass doors lead to an outdoor zone, which has a mix of table settings, bar stools and lounges.

Frameless glass panels can enclose the Regatta Room for functions of up to 150 people. The nearby Trophy Room is also glass-enclosed and suitable for corporate meetings or private dining groups of up to 10 people.

Upstairs has a new space called The Bridge, with a long table flanked by leather chairs. It is ideal for training, board meetings and corporate entertaining during the day, or private dining functions at night with 10-20 people. Glass doors again lead to a balcony with tree-filtered views of the marina and trawler jetty.

The Retreat is a smart-casual, members-only space with a piano surrounded by dining and coffee tables. It can be reserved by members for private banquets and stand-up cocktail events, while visiting regatta sailors also can use it as a dedicated area to mingle.

Raised on a sheep farm in New Zealand, Luke has long harboured a paddock-to-plate mentality and a passion for cooking. He honed his skills while working in Scotland for five-star resorts and opulent private members clubs.

Upon returning to New Zealand, Luke joined the Mantra Group, rising to become Regional Executive Chef. He then moved to the Anchorage Port Stephens, which was honoured with a Australian Good Food Guide chef’s hat under Luke’s helming.

In recent years he has worked as a fruit-and-vegetable provedore.

“Every day I was around kitchens and missed working in them … I just love cooking,” Luke says. “When the club called me, it represented a great opportunity to start something from scratch.

“The clubhouse has a relaxed, resort-like feel, quite unique for Newcastle. I tell people, ‘we don’t have 180 poker machines, we have 180 marina berths’ – that’s the difference.”

The kitchen has nine staff, most of whom have worked internationally.

“You can still get a burger or schnitzel but they’re done really well,” Luke adds. “We offer something different too. Everything is traceable, which brings consistency – our lamb, for example, is from Pukara Estate, our pork is from Murray River, our beef is from Bass Strait.

“We’re making our own ice cream and sorbets, along with sauces and dressings, right down to smoking our own salmon.”

The bar and lounge menu, meanwhile includes a Charcuterie plate, with selected cured meats, house terrine, pickles, marinated vegetables, sourdough, Australian cheese selection, lavosh, toasted bread, spiced nuts, dried fruit and pastes.

Diners can order from their table using the COVID-safe Me&U smartphone system.

Reservations for Nautica Dining and membership applications are taken online at ncyc.net.au .

In January, we sailed on MSC Meraviglia for a 9-night cruise. Each night, we dined at the private Top Sail Restaurant – exclusive to Yacht Club guests. Because food is such an important part of our cruise experience, we captured every dinner menu to share with you.

To make it easier to digest (see what I did there!!), we’ve split the 9 dinners into 3 separate pages, complete with photos of the food. Scroll down to see just how well we ate during the course of our cruise!

MSC Yacht Club – Night One Dinner Menu

For our first dinner in the Yacht Club Top Sail Lounge, we each enjoyed multiple starters and entrées. We both ended our meal with the Tiramisu.

MSC Yacht Club Menus (2024) with Pictures

I got the Nordic Salad and the Fire-Roasted Tomato Cream Soup as my Starters. Because I couldn’t decide on my meal, I got two: the Tortellini Stuffed with Asparagus and Mascarpone Cheese along with the Punjabi Tadka.

MSC Yacht Club – Night Two Dinner Menu

The second night in the Top Sail Lounge was the Gala Dinner (aka, Formal Night). There were so many wonderful options on the menu, and we, once again, each ordered several appetizers!

newcastle cruising yacht club lunch menu

I ordered the Williams Salad and Burgundy Snails (fun fact: escargot is one of my favorite starters). For my entrée, I ordered the Champagne Risotto. While I won’t rehash our Yacht Club Food Review on YouTube here, let’s just say it was one of the best dishes I had in the Yacht Club. I ended my meal with the Crepes Suzette.

MSC Yacht Club – Night Three Dinner Menu

Our third dinner in the Yacht Club’s Top Sail Lounge was no different than our previous nights; we couldn’t decide what to order! So, both Rocky and I each got several appetizers. I stuck with the risotto for my main as I enjoyed it so much the previous night and I finished off with the evening’s featured dessert.

newcastle cruising yacht club lunch menu

To start, I had the Cream of Argenteuil Asparagus Soup from the “Deliciously Healthy” section of the menu. Side note: I find it kind of funny that the Deliciously Healthy section is placed directly under the full Desserts menu. haha

I also enjoyed the fried Asiago Cheese Fritters (definitely not from the Deliciously Healthy section). For my main, I ordered the Truffle Risotto. Again, I don’t want to give too much away, but WOW. This was fantastic; I highly recommend. Finally, for dessert I ordered the Cherries Jubilee which was flambéed by the maître d’. Extra points for both presentation and flavor. Once again, another highly recommended dish.

Please remember if you are registering for a child , you must enter their details at this step so as to create their own AS Number.

If you have any trouble, please do not hesitate to give the Sailing Office a call on 4940 8188 or email us via [email protected]

What is an Australian Sailing (AS) Number?

An  Australian Sailing Number (AS Number) is the single identifier for all participants in Sailing nationally for membership, course participation and qualifications. Registering is quick, simple and doesn’t cost anything extra.  You will automatically receive an AS Number when registering for a sailing course.

The AS Number will remain as your unique identifier regardless of what level you come into the sport and what level you ultimately achieve.

Some of the benefits include:

  • Enrolling in educational courses nationally
  • Entering sailing and other events nationally
  • Tracking your progress through the sport and keeping a record of your membership, courses and qualifications
  • Access to Australian Sailing’s monthly e-newsletter  Nautical News
  • Personal Accident insurance cover whilst your AS Number is current.

Each person needs their own individual AS Number, so for example, a child enrolling in a Tackers course needs their own AS Number, registration cannot be done using a parents AS Number.

You receive an AS Number as part of the process of registering for an Academy course or by becoming a General or Crew member of the Club.

Your AS Number and Training Membership covers you for the duration of your course and for a period of 3 months after the course finish date. For more details about membership of NCYC please click through to our Membership Information .

I missed a session, can I catch up?

Our Courses/Events will be conducted on the date(s) as listed on the registration portal.  Please ensure you are able to attend the session(s) prior to registering.

Unable to Attend a Session

If you are aware that you will be unable to attend a session, we request that you contact the Sailing Academy via  [email protected] before the session is due to commence.  This will help to prevent our instructors holding up the group whilst waiting for you to arrive.

Terms & Conditions – Refunds and Course/Event Transfers

Due to ncyc postponement or reschedule.

On occasion, due to adverse weather conditions, we are required to postpone and reschedule sessions. We will organise to catch up the missed session in accordance with our Terms & Conditions .

Scheduled Catch Up Sessions for Keelboat Courses

NCYC will schedule a ‘Keelboat Catch Up Session’ approximately once a month during Spring & Summer and less frequently during Autumn & Winter.

Please refer to the Catch Up Session Schedule to see upcoming dates and to book a place.

Our standard Terms & Conditions apply to these sessions including, refunds/reschedules.

It's windy/raining, am I still sailing?

Generally, courses still run, we may need to hold an on-shore practical/theory session if we can’t get on the water.

If for some reason a session is cancelled or needs to be rescheduled,  we will endeavour to get in touch via e-mail at least 2 hours before. If you do not receive an email, please assume we are going ahead and we will assess the conditions at the time of the session.

Should we have to reschedule we will work with you to find a suitable catch-up date – the process differs depending upon the course in which you are registered.

What is your Refund Policy?

Please refer to our NCYC Sailing Academy Terms & Conditions – Refunds and Course/Event Transfers for full details

Is parking available onsite?

If you are coming by car you are welcome to park in the NCYC car park (this is however a Council restricted 2-hour parking area) or park across the bridge at Carrington and enjoy the short walk back over the bridge.

Course participants are offered a parking pass for the NCYC car park as part of your enrolment and you can collect one from your Instructor. Please ensure this is completed and displayed correctly as Council Rangers do regularly patrol the car park and surrounding areas.

Another option is to come by train/light rail as the Wickham Interchange is a pleasant short walk from the Club.

We are pleased to offer gift vouchers for ALL of our courses at the Sailing Academy.
